Niners add two compensatory picks to late-round collection

In 2008, the 49ers drafted Virginia Tech wide receiver Josh Morgan with their sixth-round pick, No. 174 overall.

In 2009, they grabbed LSU defensive end Ricky Jean Francois with a seventh-round pick, No. 244 overall.

In 2010, Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon, selected No. 173 overall, was one of their three sixth-round selections.

In 2011, it appears, they will have multiple chances to find a few more late-rounders capable of sticking to their roster.

The NFL announced its compensatory draft picks today and San Francisco was awarded two seventh-round selections, Nos. 238 and 249 overall (they lost free agents Arnaz Battle and Tony Pashos and only signed David Carr). With the additional selections, the 49ers have a league-high 12 draft picks, five being sixth- or seventh-round selections.

In fact, the Niners own six of the draft’s final 79 selections and nine of their picks come after the third round (sorry, the Texans will get Mr. Irrelevant, aka Mr. No. 253 overall).

San Francisco, obviously, is in prime position to package a few later-round selections if it wants to move up earlier in the draft. Their compensatory picks, however, can’t be traded.

Here are the Niners’ 12 draft picks:

1.  First round, No. 7 (7th overall)
2. Second round, No. 13 (45th overall)
3. Third round, No. 12 (76th overall)
4. Fourth round, No. 11 (108th overall)
5. Fourth round, No. 18 (115th overall, from San Diego in 2010 draft-day trade)
6. Fifth round, No. 10 (141st overall)
7. Sixth round, No. 9 (174th overall)
8. Sixth round, No. 25 (190th overall, from Seattle for DT Kentwan Balmer)
9. Seventh round, No. 8 (210th overall)
10. Seventh round, No. 30 (230th overall, from Detroit through Jets for QB Shaun Hill)

12. Seventh round, No. 49 (249th overall, compensatory)
