SANTA CLARA — Dashon Goldson told a group of reporters today at his locker that he expects to start on Sunday against the Bengals. So, expect Goldson to replace Madieu Williams as the starting free safety.
Here are more quote from Goldson.
Q: Have you been able to gauge from practice how much you’re going to play on Sunday?
GOLDSON: This week the focus was on getting me ready so I could get back on the football field this week, starting off with the practices and getting a lot of reps. If I was to say then I would probably be playing a lot.
Q: Starting?
GOLDSON: I’m expecting to.
Q: (Inaudible).
GOLDSON: We had a lot of mental errors last week that cost us big time. Our secondary, we watched the film, they played well except for those critical mistakes. Lack of focus. Can’t have those.
Q: Do you feel comfortable playing base, nickel, and dime?
GOLDSON: Oh yeah. I’m good. All packages.
Q: Do you expect to be in on first down and until they guy punt?
GOLDSON: Yeah, exactly.
Q: What do you think you can add to the lineup that this defense needs right now?
GOLDSON: They’ve been playing good. I can’t say what I can add, but I know what I can do as a football player. I’m another guys out there who can get guys lined up, get to the ball and make things happen. These have been playing good football since the preseason. I can’t say that I can come over here and make a tremendous difference, but I can be another force on their defense.
Q: Will a ball hawk like you have more opportunities to make something happen against a rookie quarterback?
GOLDSON: I’d like to think so. Going into a ballgame you always want to go out there and get turnovers. We see a couple plays he (Dalton) forced the ball. We’ve got to capitalize on a lot of those things and just tighten up from what we learned last week and take it in to this ballgame.
Q: Is this where dropping seven into coverage could pay dividends with a rookie quarterback.
GOLDSON: I wouldn’t say dropping coverage, just getting pressure on him. A lot of quarterbacks crack under pressure. If we can put the pressure on him and lock of the guys outside, we can come out with this ballgame.

I need Goldson to be golden back there and lay the wood on the opponent like we’ve seen him do. Causing turnovers. Show us your as golden as the monetary value you advertised.
Goldson has all the incentive on the world to play well. To earn that contract that he thought he deserved. 1 year contracts should motivate anyone to play his best. Been working forever in this league. I’d love to see Spencer starting as well. We need him as well. Tarell brown is not quite ready to start.
Jordan,
Of all the players on the Niners roster (except maybe Crabs), Goldson has to work the hardest to earn back my trust. Did he make a single play last year? How many times did he come in on a blitz, completely unblocked, fail to make the sack, then the QB bombs a pass down the middle of the field for a long gain or TD? He is no Ronnie Lott or Merton Hanks or Tim McDonald. How many times did he fail to get back in time to help the CB’s in deep throws down the middle?
The Niner CB got a lot of blame, but Goldson did not do anything of merit to start as safety.
If you can remember a great game he played (or even a great play) from all last year, please refresh my memory. What games did we win because we had him as our safety?
Well said razor
Tarrell Brown has had so many opportunities to prove he is a starter and every time he has been average at best. I would like to see Culliver and T.Brock more on nickel and dime packages.
I agree FDM
Even though Tramaine Brock is getting more reps, I think that Culliver is the diamond in the rough. I’d like to see both of them develop into long term answers at CB….and DON’T forget, Reggie Smith is a crossover CB/Safety. Shawntee is still a starter, but I’m afraid that Terrell is nickel/dime back. We need bigger DB’s.
Coach H and the O Side are pressing everyone’s patience (obviously including V Davis) but we’re all being cool because we know the history and can begin to see where he’s going or trying to get to. However, I cannot make myself cut Fangio any slack – sorry. He is either guessing wrong in the most crucial times or something. When teams need to bring heat on us to nip something in the bud (count the sacks on Alex) – they bring the whole kitchen including the sink. We do not. We get toasted. Tony Romo did what any winning team does – he beat our “D” like a drum. The only way any team wins is beating the defense.
I never thought I would be so happy to see Goldson return to not only the 49ers but to the Starting Lineup this Sunday.
He has to be better than what we saw last week with Williams.
Okay Goldson show us fans that you’re worth more than advertised now.
Agreed. I was disappointed with Goldson’s play last year, but Williams and Smith weren’t cutting it.
I never trust contract years, but last year he sucked. So lets see if we get Jekyll or Hyde this year
Williams will get there. Having said that I’m happy Goldson is back too.
what about Alex Smith?
What about Pumpkin Schnitzel?
dude, no need to call him names.
A family friend of his, was telling me that he wanted to return.
Lol is it that time of year again when high priest lauds his 49ers connections? Spare us dude.
Kick some knowledge High. Swat the haters.
dg was playd hurt last year thus a dwn yr. no doubt he makes secondary betr. maybe reggie slides over to ss replacing whit on 3rd and longs
You are right dReed. He was hurt. But how come he failed to make so many plays that were right there for the taking? If the defense sends a safety blitz, and there is a clear lane to the QB, the safety has to make the sack/tackle behind the line of scrimmage.
If he fails, and Goldson made a habit of it last year, then you have opened up a huge hole down the middle of your defense which few CB’s can keep coverage on. Neither NC nor Spencer were good enough to do so, and they got burned a lot because of it.
