SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Vernon Davis said at his locker this afternoon.
Q: You’re returning home to Washington D.C. this weekend. A lot of people expected in the stands?
VERNON DAVIS: A lot of people. I think I’ve got about 90 tickets. It’ll be nice. First time playing back at home since I’ve been in the NFL. So I look forward to the game, I look forward to seeing my family, and I also look forward to coming out with a victory. I know the Redskins have a pretty good squad over there. Definitely can’t go to sleep on those guys because this is the NFL. Each week is different.
Q: You’re an emotional guy. Is there any fear about keeping your emotions in check so you can concentrate on the game?
VERNON DAVIS: Oh yeah, most definitely. I’ll definitely keep my emotions in check. It’s just like any other week, any other game. I expect myself to do well and it all starts in practice. That’s what we’re here for – to get everything that we need so we can play fast on Sunday.
Q: But would it be nice for you to have a big game in front of your home crowd?
VERNON DAVIS: Oh yeah, it would, it would, it would be exciting. Each and every week I just wait until my number is called and I try to take advantage of every opportunity I get. Right now Frank is doing well. He’s doing a great job for us on the ground. Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to do it and there’s no complaints. So, I just wait for my opportunity.
Q: What type of texts and tweets have you been getting from your buddies back home?
VERNON DAVIS: ‘Vernon, I need you to light it up this week. Two touchdowns. 160 yards.’ Just all types of stuff: ‘I need tickets.’ But it’s cool, it’s cool.
Q: Is there any frustration that you’re not getting a handful of catches per game?
VERNON DAVIS: It is frustrating, but I’m a team guy, I’m a team guy. I’m willing to suck it up and do whatever I have to do to help my team win games. ‘Doing all the dirty work’ I call it, which Coach Roman calls it as well. It’s exciting where we’re headed. We’re definitely headed in the right direction, so I’m not going to complain about it. I’m just going to wait for my opportunities and when they come I will take advantage of them.
Q: What can you do to get those receiving yards and those catches?
VERNON DAVIS: It depends on the game plan. It depends on the coaches. I know most of the time I’m double covered or they’re trying to put a corner on me, someone that can run really well with me down the field. They changed the coverage up on us so it allows me not to get open. It could be a number of things, a number of things.
Q: DeAngelo Hall talked yesterday about how the Niners tight ends are faster than the wide receivers.
VERNON DAVIS: Ho ho! Did he?
Q: Yes. Do you expect or have you seen more coverage from corners and not safeties or linebackers.
VERNON DAVIS: I’m seeing more coverage from corners. Like when we played Philadelphia, they had Nnamdi Asomugha on me the whole time. They’re a little quicker than the average guy, whether it be a safety or someone else. I look forward to the challenge, I look forward to the challenge. Can’t wait. Whoever it is I’m going to do my best to get open, do my best to get open and win every battle by being physical and explosive.
Q: Today Greg Roman mentioned that on the game-winning touchdown to Delanie Walker in Detroit, that you were in fact triple covered. Can you get any satisfaction from the fact that you have the all the defenders on you so it creates these other openings?
VERNON DAVIS: I hate it. It sucks. It sucks because I definitely want to get my hands on the ball so I can this team win games. But if I don’t and we’re winning, I’ll take that. I’ll take it.
Q: So it’s a decent trade off?
VERNON DAVIS: Yes. It means a lot to me to be 6-1 because I’ve never been in this position before, and, like I said, if I can go and not get passes and then get into the Super Bowl and be Super Bowl MVP, it means a lot more to me.
Q: What if you weren’t Super Bowl MVP, would that be OK, too?
VERNON DAVIS: If we made it and hopefully won, then I could live with that, too.
