49ers fans are the most overrated in the NFL (N.Y. Daily News)

Here’s a delightful column from the New York Daily News’ Filip Bondy on “ten good reasons most football fans – and non-football fans – in San Francsico are softer than the unarmed Giant fans who figure to be in their midst on Sunday.”

Among other things, he says 49er fans are generally too fit, too wealthy and too smart. Worst of all, they ride around on cable cars and “they probably hum a lot to themselves.”

  1. lady49er says:

Um. If Bondy did his research better, he would have learned that while there were a lot of fights in that preseason game, a RAIDERS fan actually shot another RAIDERS fan at candlestick. I’m sorry, but this column is obviously just a way to bash on sf fans with everyday life facts. What was he going to say next, “sf has Castro, and that neighborhood isn’t watching football”? Nyc may have more people, but sf unites when our teams go far.

    • Ron says:

Um. Right, and your fans also tweet Williams threats after he makes a mistake.

    • non 9er fan says:

you part fake fans lol you only unite when your teams go far. goes to show how fake you are and are only around to hop on the band wagons.

  2. KT says:

    Filip Bondy,

eff you. We’re going to kick your NY Giants’ azzes. Bent Jones said your team sux and overrated.

  3. Neal says:

Being a New Yorker for the first 21 years of my life and living in Cali for more then 1/2 my life, what a dumbass column. That is all I can say

    • BigP says:

      Neal,
My best friends dad grew up in New York and he is still traumatized from having to shovel snow and salt the sidewalks in the winter. He has lived out here for almost 40 years now and says he doesn’t miss it one bit. The only thing he misses are Egg Cream sodas.

      • Neal says:

        @Big P,
I miss the Dr. Brown diet cream soda. I also lived in Buffalo for a few years and remember my Parents had a 2 story townhouse and on the second floor, I would open my Parent’s window and slide downthe snow to the front yard of the house. Don’t miss it either.

  4. 49erGirl says:

Obviously this man is not familiar with the ‘Stick. I’ve never heard NY that loud. Philly and NY – they’ll turn on their own team in the 1st quarter – that’s something to be proud of.

And besides, its easier to be loud and obnoxious in a city where it isn’t painful to draw a breath. Unlike NY – where both the cold and the smell of the person next to you are both hard to take in.

    • Doc says:

Excellent point on the home team turning, I have seen this in the past. This is garbage journalism at best, at least we have Grant who exercises moral ethics in his views and opinions.

      Thank Grant!

      Doc

    • Chad says:

I’ve seen 9ers fans turn on Smith at home in the first quarter a few times as well. I love my 9ers, but one thing I have learned over the last 9 years of misery is that 9ers fans are fickle and have been spoiled by the Montana/Young eras. Hopefully we as fans have learned from this.

      • niner61 says:

and you’re definitely one of the glass is half full people. Some of them still don’t like Young because he replaced Joe. LOL

  5. Razoreater says:

Just do not welch out on your bet Mr. Bloomberg. Notify the Street Dept. to change the name on the street sign. The 49ers are going to smash your Little Giants into smithereens!

  6. Adam707 says:

His so called “reasons” why we are overrated are ridiculous. I cant tell if this article is meant to be a joke or not. So since the average person makes more money in SF than NY that means we are less of fans? And since the weather in Northern Cali is better than in NY it makes us soft? How does this guy have a job writing trash like this.

    • Wilson says:

You can’t tell if the article was meant to be a joke? Really? And by other comments here, you’re not alone. I guess the author will need to rethink the idea that San Francisco fans are smarter than the average New Yorker.

  7. Ribico says:

Heh, I don’t mind a little coast vs coast smack. I think It was pretty tongue in cheek, more a grudging acknowledgement that bay area residents have recognizable idiosyncrasies. Unlike, say, the blandness of your average midwestern Packers fan.

  8. Medic One says:

This reminds me of when Mayor Bloomberg bought one way plane tickets to rid NY of its homeless population. Round two involves ridding themselves of Giants fans, obviously the City is only big enough for Santanio Holmes and the NY Jets
Please continue to accentuate the positives here in SF. Your NY money, while a little dirtier, spends just as easily here in our great economy. It just doesn’t go as far, so please put a post script to the column reminding Giants Fans to bring plenty of it.

  9. f49er says:

    Guys,

I think Filip was just trying to lighten things up.

In the Whole Scheme Of Things it means nothing to me. Actually it means Minus Nothing. GO 49ers!

  10. AES says:

Bondy’ piece rings true especially regarding the intellect difference. Does he realize he just wrote a veiled critique of New York, though I don’t believe he knows it. He described (likely unknowningly) a utopian way of life for us.
    Thanks Bondy,
    49ers 21 giants 10

    p.s.
If you’re coming to town, don’t stay to long.

    • Max says:

Yes, AES, I think that you’re closer to the mark. The piece was written tongue-in-cheek and pays a knowingly back-handed compliment to San Francisco and its denizens and gives a not-so-nice take on the writer’s native town.

  11. Doc says:

This is just a smear article at best garbage journalism. He is the type of guy a newspaper hires to sell their product. Jealousy and fear has more than likely set in as One, his team does not have home field advantage and he can’t be there to watch. Two, the Giants team is not as good as the Niners and he senses fear in a loss. Finally number Three, 49er fans are more educated in football than NY fans are, after all we learned from the best Bill Walsh the Professor and now we have Harbaugh.

So there you have it……. Garbage journalism, NY fear & jealousy and superiorly educated fans.

Now that would put anyone at a disadvantage and cause some to complain.

    Doc

  12. BigP says:

I thought it was pretty funny.

  13. Fill says:

Joke article, nothing to get worked up about. Still, we’re going to smash ‘em tomorrow. Go Niners!

  14. Hoferfan67 says:

The writer is trying to be “tongue in cheek” humorous and entertaining but it falls a bit flat especially when he mentions the city across the bay.
    No big deal…yawn.

  15. Sims says:

Here is really what you need to know. When a town or city and their media right an entire article slamming the fanbase of another town and teams fanbase…..

they are scared sh.tless…. plain and simple. Flippy is scared, and so is NY. Why else would talk so much trash? From the players to the media to the radio jocks, its been trash talking all week… they are sh.ting themselves right now.

  16. 49or69 all the time says:

I can’t believe how arrogant these New Yirk jokers are. First the team, then the fans and now there media is taking smack, I can’t wait till we shut these talkers up with a win. Oh, and he forgot that the Niners are Californias team not just the city limits of San Francisco. From Oakland to Sac Town, Bay Area and back down Cali is where we put the Mac down and the Giants smack down!!

    Go Niners!!!!

  17. Sean in Canada says:

As far as being tougher due to the “bad” weather NY has, here on the lovely prairies, it has warmed up to 10 degrees fahrenheit, -10 when the wind chill is factored in. Don’t want to hear any easterner, American or Canadian, complaining about their weather.

  18. Stan says:

And the southbay in winter averages 60f. My meyer lemons are ripe now.

  19. EliEliteinHawaii says:

Eli will be elite in Hawaii :)

  20. lady49er says:

I had a conversation with a guy from ny, huge mets and giants fan. He went to the regular season Niners vs giants game, and he told me that’s the loudest stadium he has ever been to. He was literally in shock on how deafening the noise level was. Take that Bondy.

And to Wilson- even if the article was a joke, Bondy is a writer for a ny paper, the article was only put on sfgate.

  21. dangle says:

That article is a joke, NBD.
    On a more serious note:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=nfp-20120121_undercover_cops_will_wear_giants_jerseys_at_nfc_title_game

There will be Undercover COPS in NY GIANTS gear at the stick tomorrow in basically a sting operation to catch unruly fans. I’m Sure that none of you fine citizens are the aforementioned thugs, but be careful nonetheless.
Personally, I hate (hate hate hate) seeing opponents jerseys at home games, and the whole things seems very 1984-esque. But if it serves the grander purpose of making everybody safer and arresting or at least ejecting some low life criminals, then I guess its alright.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Agree. If season ticket holders sell only to those that will wear read that would help. How novel is that? Too much greed.

    • Chicago49er says:

It would be truly unfair for undercover cops wearing Giants gear and coming to our stadium to create problems! Are they going to stand up in the section and cheer on the Giants too! I do not like Giant fans, big mouth and cocky still crying about 2002 game when they got beat. So if the cops want to dress as Giant fans they better just sit on their seat and do not instigate problems or its going to get ugly.

  22. niner norm says:

Aside from the inaccurate opening shot about our violent fans in the parking lot, I thought the article was pretty funny. I agree that it was more a criticism of New York fans than of our ours.
A little cross-city ribbing makes the game more fun (when respectful) so let’s all lighten up. I think the rekindling of this rivalry is a great thing. It’s become more difficult to get fired up about beating the once-hated Rams lately.
Besides, our tepid response to their trash talking will really stand out after we smack them down tomorrow afternoon.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

You got it, Norm. I’m a little troubled that our fans think this was a serious criticism of SF. He said we’re not as fat, we’re smarter, we’re richer, and we have a better attitude…if he’s looking for an argument from me, he’s going to have to change the subject!

      • Crab15 says:

Rusty – What’s your predicton for tomorrow?
22 hours 44 minutes til game time!

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Crab, I tried to predict a game earlier this year, and was so far off, it was embarrassing! So I’m out of the prognostication biz…but feeling damn good about the Niners. Of course I expect them to win; I just bought the iTunes version of last week’s game and watched it again…MAN our guys looked good! So I’ll take any win at all…GO NINERS! Just 20 hours from now!
        Woo-hoo!

  23. Chicago49er says:

Hey Filip Bondi are you reading this post! your article sucks, extremely boring and as Hofer mentioned made me yan several times! You are entitle to your opinion however at least get your facts before publishing a f grade article. This Fan base and the FORTY NINERS will ROCK your World on SUNDAY rain or shine against the giants. GO NINERS

  24. Mike says:

This guy is an absolute idiot.

  25. Da Coach says:

That was done totally tongue in cheek, and quite humorous at that.

I hope our 49ers smash them in the mouth and show them what might men they are.

  26. Hightop says:

“I play it first and tell you what it was later” Miles Davis…Who’s got it better than us!!!!????

  27. big niner says:

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ nap time……I think his newspaper got hacked by a New orleans fan….

  28. Josh Saintperle says:

Well since the article is obviously (I hope) TONGUE IN CHEEK, the only diss to be made on 49er faithful (and I’m one and I live in Oakland) is a lack of sense of humor — which would mean we’re right up there with Giants fans. (But not Jets fans — they really NEED a sense of humor.)

  29. eastcoast9er says:

ok.. time for a little east coast learning. 1) the ny biants do not play in new york.they and their stadiun are in new jersey, the only nfl team based in the state of new york is …buffalo bills.if you have ever been to new jersey ,then you wouldnt want to go back.the writer of this article has pen## envy.and if he could find giants stadium.i would be surprised.east rutherford, new jersey..my god..no way.ive been there on buisness and i know first hand.its not the greatest city in the world.just ask fellow blogger ribico.

    • eastcoast9er says:

al;so they share a stadium with the jets. come on man!!!!!!

    • ribico says:

Hey, don’t hate on New York. New York, San Francisco, New Orleans… all extraordinary places with their own extremely unique characteristics that lets them stand out from the extended strip malls that pass for other American cities.

Even have to give up some love for NJ. Once you get out of the Turnpike corridor, which includes the Meadowland’s new hideous darth stadium (god i hope Niners new stadium doesn’t turn out like that monstrosity), most of the rest of the state is quite lovely.

OK, enough civic appeasement. Tomorrow, the Niners will kill the tri-state’s representatives and violate their women!

  30. bbthekitty says:

New York fans are sub-human filth. Scum of the earth.

    • Max says:

Okay, bb, but other than that, you’ve to admit that they’re pretty nice people once you get to know them :-).

      • big niner says:

        pricks!!!!

      • Max says:

bb, I’ve had a chance now to reflect on your comment and would ask you to be more careful in your choice of words to criticize New Yorkers: “sub-human” in German is “untermensch”; it therefore carries connotations with which I don’t think anyone on this blog would want to associate themselves. I certainly don’t, and I hope that your word choice was inadvertent.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @max

“sub-human” in English carries plenty of negative notions.

And could be a term used in a syfy show.

    • Max says:

Thanks, DS. You’re right – which is one reason why the term didn’t immediately hit me the wrong way. What worried me most upon reflection, I guess, was the context – “New York fans” – in which it was used. And also what seems to me the immoderateness of the remark. But I hope that I’m off base here. Oh, well. It’s game day! Time for better things!

  31. ribico says:

You have to understand the NY Daily News is a tabloid, just 1/2 a step out of the gutter from that Murdoch rag, the NY Post. There are few, even in NYC, that take either publication seriously – used mostly for cleaning up while walking your dog.

  32. Fesnyc says:

I think the article was a not so thinly disguised love letter to san francisco…the more you live outside the bay area, the more you realize that most everyone loves SF, and they view it kinda like the little brother or niece they love and dont get to see enough.

That dont mean our boys aint gonna kick some ny behind.

  33. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Grant, thanks so much for this article, I haven’t laughed so much in ages. I grew up in NYC and I lived in San Francisco. New Yorkers, what can I say, they’re born being cynical. It gives you a certain edge because you always look at the other guy and try to figure out what’s his angle and how is he trying to rip me off. I’ve lived all over the world and to quote Tony B, I left my heart in San Francisco.

Sixty years ago in NY you had the following papers the Daily News, Mirror, Journal American, Herald Tribune, NY Times, NY Post, and most had morning and evening editions. My grandfather would make me go the candy store and buy all the papers every morning. Grant, your father can probably tell you about the great sportswriters back then. The stories were works of art, I loved Dave Anderson.

  34. NinersRoc says:

I love how the Giants and all of their arrogant fans talk so much trash yet they seem to never back it up in the big games. They had their last two games handed to them and now they think they’re “streaking”? Hot air! That’s it. Don’t worry, we’ll be sure to deflate those over-exaggerated egos on Sunday, then we’ll make sure we wipe the blue stains off our feet on the way to the super bowl!

    • Caveman says:

      Hold on a second.

I’m not sure how anyone who goes into Packer territory and comes out with a win wouldn’t be elated and riding a high off of that. Let’s be fair to NY for that win. You can say whatever you want, but NY did shine in that game. That being said, it’s time to open up a can of woop arsssss on NY. :)

      • NinersRoc says:

Seriously? That was the worst offensive performance by the packers all season (and probably since mid-season last year). Saying that the game was handed to them is not an over-statement. Sure their offense produced, but too many drops killed their drives, NOT Giants defense. Sure the Giants will be a tough game, but they’re not truly ready for the gladiator match they’re getting to walk into.

      • bayareafanatic says:

The Packers lost that game because they had heavy hearts period. They are a true family. An extremely tight knit unit. One of their own lost a son the week prior to their big game against NY and it ripped the wind out of its sails.
GB is a beast and everyone left in the tournament is glad they are gone.

  35. wax says:

I thought the article was kinda funny. Hey, lots of east coast transplants out here….. not so much back there. They all know how inferior their city is to our City. That’s why they almost plead that it’s “the greatest city in the world.” The louder the volume gets the less truth there is in the sentiment. As Steinbeck said of The City (in Travels With Charley), “she is so sure of her greatness, she can afford to be kind.”

  36. Mood Indigo says:

Funny article! Looking forward to the game tomorrow. I got a free ticket from a friend — my first Niners playoff game.

  37. Prescott Az. David says:

I thought it was all tongue in cheek and a complete put down of
    the East coast fans.

  38. Crab15 says:

Most ESPN experts pick Giants. Golic got it right though!
    http://espn.go.com/nfl/picks

  39. Ribico says:

Tanier, in the NY Times, picks Niners.

  40. Gee Whizz says:

49r fans are angry obnoxious assholes! You lost an are out! I’m glad.
Tweeting threats and obscenities to your own players. You guys SUCK!
