Alex Smith saves the day (Lowell column)

My dad wrote his column on Alex Smith. In it, he gives the quarterback his due – Smith did what almost everyone said he couldn’t. He won a shootout. He led not one but two game-winning touchdown drives. And he did all this in a playoff game.

post is probably out of place…

NO played with the heart of a champion….first thing

MC had such a nice seal block on AS TD run

NO is the land of hurricanes and for those players who don’t know what it is like to be in earthquake country go ask thomas…..the hit whitner delivered to him was what an earthquake feels like at its epi-center

two 4th quarter comebacks for this offense…..

who could have believed if NO scored 32 that niners could still eek it out

so many great plays around the team

carlos rogers tip away on a bomb

NO TE was pretty damn awesome

in the beginning of the game i thought the refs were going to be a big factor in this game …. like on that pass interference play on the graham down the sideline play…..but then it seemed the refs backed off

NO … did they even have a penalty in this game

    +4 in the take aways

the secondary did step it up this game…..

this game had everything …..just everything

for the AS apologists there were his big plays….even the non-apologists had their points…the things the non-apologists said AS had not displayed to date AS delivered in spades….and the non-apologist were correct…if AS had not delivered then it could be a talking point for debate but AS did and the talking point is clearly a moot point for this week…

so many blogging fans had their keys to the win and damn i thing everyone of them were correct…..

for me i felt a clenched fist tone needed to be set and whitner delivered….i was worried about NO and the long hand offs and in the beginning of the game it was evident….

and other bloggers said certain other things needed to happen for a niner win and i think all their talking points were identified and executed…..

wow such a physical game….all year and again today

    • Adam says:

i think it was kyle williams with the seal block on that AS td run

      • Ceadderman says:

It was. It was a hell of a block by a Fysical player on a DE no less. That should be a highlight in Training Camp for years to come. “If you de-cleat a player like so then anything can happen” :P

    • Doc says:

      JGWindsor,

      Spot on with your post.

      Doc

    • jgwindsor says:

i will follow by saying at the time …..and i mention it now because it slipped my mind…..AS did a horrible job managing this game

point in case was his TD run…..

just over 2 minutes left and 2 points down or whatever……

he should have stepped out of bounds after or go down to the turf and start working that clock down to a last play FG and wond the game like that…..

but nooooo…… it had to be double heroics by both teams …… just to make it a game for the ages

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jg

So, can you imagine the blog if the Niners had failed to score a TD? What would be said of AS then?

      • Doc says:

        Are you bi-polar?

      • jgwindsor says:

it is just a perspective of how that game could have really been “managed” properly and eliminate the last two drives and 16 less total points in the last 4 minutes…

just sayin…..the game could have ended with a lot less stress and more like a niner type game vs the way it did more like a NO type game

it has been said AS has a handle for those kind of situations i.e. keeping control of the situation…..this one kind of got away from him and he had to come through with some heroics because he didn’t go to the turf….

it will probably be brought up in the class room….for future fodder

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Doc

        “Are you bi-polar?”

Was that directed at me doc?
If so, no. I am not bipolar. Thanks for asking.

  2. 23jordan says:

Alex smith did everything I said he couldn’t do. As a Niner fan, I’m elated I was wrong. My bad Alex Smith. Keep proving me and everyone else wrong. Go Niners, Go Alex Smith. I stand corrected!!!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, I’m glad you were wrong…now we the 9ers are in the Championship Game!! Incredible!!

      • 23jordan says:

        Funny Hofer,

I’ve been saying that word, incredible for the last 7 hours. I can’t believe what I saw from Smith today. Incredible!

      • DS94everXev says:

        Haters hate.

        AS or not.

        BugP/49ergirl

Here is your chance to tell 23J to shut it forever.

Will you have the balls to do so?

A lot will depend on your answers.

      • 49erGirl says:

Why on earth would I tell Jordan to shut it forever? He said he’s eating crow and is finally starting to believe in Alex. I applaud him for that!

You’ve said before that you’re Christian. Would you kick someone out of church who didn’t believe in Jesus previously and wanted a second chance?

Get over it. The debate is over. Past is in the past. We are all fans regardless of how we previously felt about Smith. What pleasure are you getting over this continued fighting?

Anger is like hot coal that you hold tightly to your chest and are waiting to throw at someone who will never come within striking distance (I think that’s derived from a Buddist saying…)

      • DS94everXev says:

        Sorry BigP

I didn’t mean to call you Bug. Typo on my part.

      • BigP says:

        DS,
I don’t need to tell Jordan anything. I say what I feel, completely independent of Jordan. The problems you and I have had usually arise from you trying to lump me in with his opinions. I don’t hate on Smith. You have never heard me say, “We are a QB away from the Super Bowl.” I have always supported Smith, and the rest of the team. I have heard talk of the “haters” all season long and it’s ridiculous. The people that use that term are only using it in defense of one player, and they regularly hate on everybody else on the team to try and make their point. I call it like it is. Yesterday’s victory was a team victory. I said a couple of weeks back that the Niners would win and that they would break 30 points, a few of the “Smithers” said I was wrong. They didn’t think we could win that type of game.

        My post from January 5th:
“I think it will be a higher scoring game than most people do. I think the winner will break 30 points. I think the Saints will blitz the hell out of the offense. Both Payton and G. Williams (D.C.) are ultra-aggressive. They will get after it. Smith will have opportunities to make plays, and I think he will. I said earlier in the year that he could have a very good game against a team like NO or GB but it may not be enough. The secondary has been vulnerable when the opponents open it up. These teams are opened up all of the time. That being said, Harbaugh and the staff have two weeks to prepare and the players have two weeks to rest and get healthy. I believe that will be the deciding factor if they face the Saints.”

        Your responses to that post:

“How many teams win playoff games if they give up 30+ points? Regardless of how stellar their offense is?” -DS94everXe

Looks like I had plenty of faith, and I was willing to put my opinion out there before the game.

      • 23jordan says:

        DS,

You are a jackazz. What makes you think anyone here can tell me to do anything. I’m not a follower or a cult member. You are stupid if you expect someone else to control what I write on this blog. Idiot!!

    • exgolfer says:

      Jordan,

I want to give you a virtual hug right now.

People have been telling you you’re wrong for kissing off Smith as possibly being a viable NFL QB for a long time. Instead of listening to the REASONS AS hasn’t had a chance to show what he could or couldn’t do, you called them “Alexcuses” [what a joke that turned out to be, right? I know you see that now]. Don’t worry, people make the same mistake, over and over and over again all the time. You’re not alone.

You followed that up by calling him a “Jr. Game Manager” in almost every one of your posts. Man, I feel for you on that one. You must feel like a complete fool for using that over and over again. I feel your pain, but hang in there.

On top of that, you said repeatedly we’re a QB away from a playoff win, Alex Smith will wet himself, etc., etc. I’m sure some people are saying your just a know nothing, blow hard. Not me. Like I said, I want to give you a virtual hug.

I’m glad you’ve finally seen the error of your ways and have admitted you’re completely wrong about Alex Smith. Good on you, my 49er brother!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ex

It’s going to take a lot more than a few posts to make up for what 23J said.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nope

23J made it personal. Had he kept it to football, no problem. He didn’t.
There are consequnces for ones actions.

He needs to man up, take it and not complain.

      • BigP says:

Good job. At least you listened to the clip.

      • 49erGirl says:

Big P – there are still a few people left on here who are trying to instigate the arguments amongst fans and not able to let go and enjoy this victory as a whole.

Just be thankful you aren’t one of them. Holding a grudge and not being able to let things go is a truly painful way to live. Eventually, if they’re lucky, they’ll learn that the only people they’re really hurting with their misplaced anger is themselves.

There was a lot of disturbing and disgusting insults thrown my way yesterday. I’m over it – today is a new day. No way I’d let that kind of stuff ruin how freakin’ awesome that game was and how excited I am about next week!!!

Who’s got it better than us????

      • BigP says:

        49erGirl,
Noooooobody! I got your back. Great win, great game. AS and VD busted out big time on a national stage. As far as the nasty comments, they only came from one person. Sadly, that person was obviously a regular based on their observations. They get mad because they are not getting the attention that you receive on this blog. It’s all in good fun. It is what it is. Enjoy the win!

      • 23jordan says:

        Big p, 49ergirl,

You thinking give a damn what DS thinks? That dysfunctional idiot! I could care less what opinion this clown ever has. I font owe anyone here a damn thing. Just goes to show you how twisted this sick puppy is. Couldn’t be a woman, too controversial, couldn’t be a man, too feminine and sensitive. However, it is just plain ignorant fOr sure!!

      • 23jordan says:

        Ex,

You still owe me a week off of the blog though.

      • 49erGirl says:

Yes, DS what Jordan said about you wasn’t nice.

Where were you yesterday when those insults were being thrown my direction?

That’s right – you were the one saying I had it coming because I’m admittedly a woman and deserved that kind of treatment.

Sorry, I may not hold any grudges against you, but I’m not going to stand up and fight for you either.

      • exgolfer says:

        Jordan,

For starters, as far as I know, our bet was whether SF or Pitt would win the Monday night game. You know, the one you said AS would wet himself in and cost the 49ers the game. I thought I had the 9ers and you had the Steelers. If I wasn’t careful in correctly reading the bet you laid out, that’s on me. But I asked you, repeatedly to point out to me the posts were we made the bet [I tried, but couldn't find them myself]. You never responded. In spite of that, I was off the blog for nine or ten consecutive days in late December. So, even if we did make the bet you claim [which I'm not at all sure of], I’ve already beeen off the blog for plenty long to pay up.

OK? So, since we’re so into doing what we say, when Smith gets his extension, that will be the last we hear from you, right?

    • MosesZD says:

You’re another. Just go away. You really have no right to celebrate Smith’s win. He did it. And he did it with only one NFL quality player to help him — Vernon Davis.

Give Smith some real helpers on offense and he’ll be ‘elite’ as any ‘elite’ QB in the NFL — two receivers and a pass-catch, multi-threat back.

      • Neal says:

I really believe the conservative call playing and the lack of urgency on every drive has limited Alex Smith, we really no longer need to be so damn conservative in the red zone and on third down plays. Let’s establish the run but if AS needs to zing it, let him. Their seems to be two AS, one that throws the ball high and wide and the other who can throw like John Elway. He is still learning the game, if we can get a big fast ass receiver next year in the draft, our offense will be as good as our defense. If we keep Ted ginn next year, he needs to just return kicks, no more receiving. Alex was great in the first quarter and the last 8 or 9 minutes of the 4th quarter and the inbetween the call playing was horrific. He is deeply affected by the call playing, which makes him or breaks him. Way to go AS !!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Neal

“Their seems to be two AS, one that throws the ball high and wide and the other who can throw like John Elway.”

I dont’ know how much truth there is in that statement. I susupect less than many people here think.

AS and GR and JH have all said the same thing. Don’t throw the Int. Don’t turn the ball over. If it isn’t there, don’t make the situation worse.

If that is a conspiracy, then it is hard to get 3 people to all say the same thing.

And, guess what? That idea of theirs has worked to the tune of getting to the NFC Title game. Something that DB will be watching from his couch at home. So, next time people, let’s not be so hasty in judging QB play. There is a reason why AS does what he does, and that reason is not always immediately obvious to us at the moment it happens.

    • Chicago49er says:

Jord I always knew you are fan down deep inside, its nice to see you man up and give Alex Smith credit for his play and courage to stick around. Welcome my brother and GO NINERS

    • jgwindsor says:

because of my previous scenerio in this case i have to agree with 23J …. i wanted the game manager AS vs this heroic out of body experience AS….it was a safer path to victory IMHO….bring the clock down to just a few seconds kick the FG….

  3. jgwindsor says:

this game tempo was like a 4th of july fireworks show….show goes on and has it different tempos and explosiveness and then there is the final minute of eye numbing explosive bright lights with an accompanying pounding thunderous roar….a cacophonous climax

how does this team come down from this high and get back to even keel and put it behind them like a loss….i.e. to come out and really focus…….

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Good point, JG, but I think they’ve been doing that all season. Can you imagine the rush after the Eagles game? Still, Coach got them all on track for the next week, and we’ve seen it in other games, too. I ain’t scared!

  4. MidWestNiner says:

Have Jim Harbaugh as the coach. Problem solved.

  5. cbreeze marty says:

alex seems to thrive in this system…gets better each week…more confident …needs bigger and better receivers…an o line with the capability of giving smith another 2 seconds will keep us in the hunt for the next few years ….all other things being equel…

  6. Blove says:

S.O.B Freak’in Alex Smith. Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Game

    • Max says:

Blove, you came back! Good for you! Your Saints gave us one helluva game – thanks! Hey, another Niner fan is always welcome here, even if he’s only a temporary one. If you’re shoppin’ around for a team to cheer on for the rest of the play-offs, please join us.

    • Brotha tuna says:

      @ Blove
Hey, Bro’, way to man-up; shows some class.
The Saints are a Helluva Team. They play hard & well. The quality of your team establishes the value of this victory for us. You’ll be back in the mix for years to come even if your DC leaves for HC opportunity.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Classy move, B. It WAS a good game, both teams contributing to one of the all-time best playoff games, ever. Your boys have nothing to hang their heads about; nobody on either side gave up, even for a second, and as Brotha says, you’ll be around for a long time to come.

  7. Hoferfan67 says:

Really enjoyed the article. Excellent read LC! Really good to hear (read) the AS accolades from the 9er players – his biggest and most important supporters.

  8. MidWestNiner says:

Right or wrong doesn’t matter with this fan 23jordan. Just as long as you cheer for the whole team. And look forward to a sixth championship season.

  9. MidWestNiner says:

Great article by your father Grant.

  10. Max says:

Lowell, I love the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s feel of this piece. It comes at you like it’s coming out of a radio, one of those thickly-varnished maple-encased jobs with the plastic knobs and the big illuminated dial face – I can almost hear a low electrical hum beneath the words! I’m thinking that when Joe DiMaggio was in the middle of his great hitting streak, the words, spoken and written, to describe his performances had this feel to them. Thanks!

  11. Blove says:

@Max. That really hurt Max !!!! But yall won fair and square ! S.O.B !!!

    • Max says:

Yes, I can imagine it did. Good thing it’s “only” a football game, though. Anyway, like I said, you’re welcome to join us – maybe after the hurt has eased a bit. Take care.

    • ribico says:

Blove, I’d hate to be on the losing end of an incredible game like that. Ouch.

Here’s looking to a new NFC rivalry for years to come.

  12. Crapsville says:

“Smith did what everyone said he couldn’t”

Not everyone. Not even Lowell claims that. He said “almost everyone”.

And it isn’t the first time he has won a game with a hard throw to a tight window. He did exactly that in the Detroit game earlier this year.

  13. oneniner says:

…Alex Smith the Hero…….didn’t just win the game …..he did it twice…….

….next time on a run like that i hope he takes a knee at the 1…..

    • big niner says:

I totally called that play right before to all the fans sitting near me. When they called it, the fans went crazy, I was being high fived and hugged by complete strangers!!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @big niner

Well I am glad the NO D didn’t hear you then, lol

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Helluva call, Big. I heard someone say on TV today that the Niners haven’t run a play anything like that all year, so it was nowhere on tape for the Saints to see. Really creative, called at the perfect time!
A lot of fans suggested that Harbaugh was holding back during the regular season, keeping some special plays for the playoffs. I kind of doubted it at the time, but this might be a good example of just that.

  14. Blove says:

    @Max
I got one love and one love only ! I never cheer for another team unless it’s in my team interest ! But. Again good Game !! S.O.B. Freak’n Alex Smith. Peace !!!

  15. Max says:

Okay, I can respect that. I’m sure we’ll hear from you again next year! And peace be with you, too.

  16. ninermd says:

Where are the saints fans? Your team hasn’t faced an offense like ours, your team hasn’t played anybody, your team is in a weak a$$ division, book it saints win easily……. Packers or giants fans next. N.O. Thanks for playing I’ve got some duct tape for those broken hearts.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      MD, how ’bout them 9ers!

    • exgolfer says:

      MD,

How about Alex Smith? Not bad, huh? Man, what a game. Smith won that thing not once, but twice! I’m actually glad Crabtree had all those drops. If he didn’t, we wouldn’t have had all the thrills at the end of game.

    • niner61 says:

Hey md where you been, how about a little sugar for that coach killing bust of a QB you once hated. LOL

      • ninermd says:

And you are? Obviously you haven’t been here it read my comments this year. But that’s ok. Right now I could really care less. If I’m eating crow. It’s with my were going to a super bowl fork. And that my friend is all that matters……. And yes I know we got one more people.

      • niner61 says:

md….Me…I’m just still enjoying the aftergame euphoria. Just glad to see Alex getting the chance to perform with a very good coaching staff behind him for a change and showing the haters that they were totally wrong. Now surround him with a few more playmakers on offense then let’s see what happens. 5, that’s right 5 forth quarter comebacks this year from a guy you called a bust. Just wanted to see if you were gonna manup and eat crow in public???? LOL

    • MosesZD says:

Why don’t you just go away… You have no right to celebrate Smith’s win. He did it. And he did it with a TE who has, for a TE, maarginal hands.

If we’d get him a pair of good receivers and a good pass-catching, multi-threat back, he’d be just as elite as any ‘elite’ QB. But even without him, he did what you and the other haters said he couldn’t do…

      • niner61 says:

MZD …a very, very accurate observation! Although VD’s hands are becoming a lot better with use. It’s too bad their one real deep threat has to spend too much time helping out in pass protection.

      • ninermd says:

Why would I leave moses???? I’m a niner fan. This is a niner blog. If I was on an Alex smith blog you might have some leverage. I guess Alex smith is the team now. Way to put down the others on offense. Team player you are and a class act. Moses you one and ds are pathetic. Your not poisoning my celebration. Just a couple more years of you morons and your one player love. Now please exit my teams stage left.

  17. oneniner says:

…”Blake Costanzo, the super special teams player, later recalled the sideline scene.

“There’s not another quarterback we’d trade for him on that drive,” he said. “He’s a great player, great team player, great quarterback, great team leader, all that. On our sideline we wanted no one else but him leading us. People were actually saying that.”…”

    • oneniner says:

…”Smith dropped back and did something unusual. He had been throwing changeups all game but now he needed something faster, a laser through an opening for checkmate. And he threw that ball at warp speed, a missile whooshing through the damp San Francisco air and Davis caught it for a touchdown, God, he caught it”…..

      lowell is good…..

      • oneniner says:

….”They trailed by one with a little more than two minutes left. And they had a third-and-8 at the New Orleans 28 and they called timeout. Smith noticed Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman debating a play called QB9 — Smith would run around the left end, hopefully for a first down. The coaches were bogged down in their discussion and Smith asserted himself and said QB9 it should be. And it was”…..

    • oneniner says:

      ….So is he really elite?

“No doubt,” Costanzo said with a touch of irritation in his voice. “He’s taken his team to the NFC Championship game. He’s beat unbelievable teams. What more do you want from the guy?”……

    • DS94everXev says:

I loved that line as well oneniner.

  18. blazer says:

Nolan, & Singletary were such disasters….HC Harbaugh has made Alex Smith the QB that he is today. All Alex needed was the Confidence instilled in him through his HC…Which is more than obvious that Nolan, & Singletary failed to do.

This is basically the same team that Singletary had, with just a few new people added to the roster.

Congrats to Alex, he more than deserves every bit of this victory!

    • NinersRoc says:

The sad thing is, Singletary is so stubborn, he probably still doesn’t think it was his fault that the team was under-achieving. Who cares now! We’re going to the NFC Championship game

  19. oneniner says:

Afterward, a still emotional Davis said the play ought to be dubbed, “The Grab,” and indeed it had heavy shades of Owens’ “The Catch II” in 1999 and the original “The Catch” 30 years earlier.

This game, however, may have been better than both.

    • big niner says:

      the ressurection?

        I don’t hate it.

      • 55niner says:

        ‘The Reckoning”

      • jgwindsor says:

hmmm, ” the reckonging” dubbing might be what next weeks game vs NYG should be called, i like it……NYG have an agenda they want to rectify….niners will need to rise up big and keep throwing those clenched fists and now along with some down field strikes….there were weapons that didn’t get used in this game like KW….and MC can definitely come up larger…

  20. EdgeOfChaos17 says:

What a game! I won’t lie with a 1:30 left I kinda felt we were done and once he hit VD oh man I feel sorry for my neighbors haha! And I kinda knew we were going to go for the TD its playoffs JH let alex air it out and can I say he was spot on with those throws! Now just 1 more game to get to the superbowl! I can’t wait till next week! It will be amazing! Go niners

  21. Ceadderman says:

Hey Grant, could you ask Alex what he was saying as he walked away from the Line of Scrimmage and when he was facing the Saints? The camera showed him “talking to himself” like he was nuts, but then when he was more squared in the frame he was OBVIOUSLY yelling at Williams over on the sidelines.

At least that’s what it looked like because the camera immediately panned to where Williams was standing and he looked like someone ran over his dog. He couldn’t get away from the Camera fast enough.

So could you ask Alex this next time please?

I think it had a lot to do with the Preseason Blitzkrieging that Williams put on Smith like he was trying to take the man out. Nobody Blitzes that heavy the first game of the Preseason. It was absolute bad form and subjected their own players to needless punishment as well as their opponents. But as they say, what goes round comes round right? :P

  22. Hov says:

@Jordan23, big props for you giving credit where credit is do much love from one 49er fan to another let’s get to the bowl!!!!

I know we’re focused one game at a time…but when we win the Superbowl Alex (and the 49ers) will likely have beaten the leagues top 3 quarterbacks! As a matter of fact Alex will have beaten 6 of the top QBs in the league. The best part is that Alex STILL has yet to officially throw for 300 yards! I won’t get too far ahead, but when it’s all over we can put this whole “elite” thing to rest forever!

I loved how afterward the analysts on Fox still didn’t want to give our man Alex his credit. That’s okay, keep hatin’, keep disrespecting, keep doubting…we know that it’s us against no, us against can’t, and we’ll just keep laying the wood and pummeling the NFL into submission. Coach said that he wanted to “build a bully”…well it’s built! The best part is we’re that real nasty kind of bully that doesn’t just take everybody’s lunch money, we’re that kind of bully that punches people right in the mouth just before we punch them in the gut!

    Go 49ers!!

  25. niner61 says:

I’ve watched a lot of Niner football over the years but I’ve never seen so many players on a Niner team make so many visible contributions to each win. These guys are the epitome of the term TEAM. They just pick each other up and win…impressive!!! A very special, fun team to watch and amazingly on the 30th anniversary of that great ’81 season.

  26. MosesZD says:

Good thing you put the qualifier ‘almost’ in your post. Because some of us had reasons to believe Smith had what it took.

Get him a couple of good receivers and a pass-catching back and he’ll be jusst as ‘elite’ as any elite QB. Keep him hampered with one NFL quality helper… He’s going to continue to get bashed by people who don’t understand great QBs have great helpers.

  27. Sean in Canada says:

I’ve never witnessed a game like that and it brought me to tears. To have not one, but two late 4th quarter comebacks in the first playoff game in almost a decade with a quarterback you either like or loathe(until now) was simply amazing.

Then Niners and AS did everything most of the media and league said they couldn’t do and props to you, 23jordan. I’m sure you’re as diehard as any of us on here and I know you’re elated to be proven wrong.

What a great day. Took me a couple days this week but my 3 year old son knows the answer to the question, who’s got it better than us?!

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Good to know there’s still some good, responsible parenting going on out there, Sean!
I agree; I don’t know that ANY of us have seen a game like that, with a DOUBLE fourth quarter comeback. If you’re a real Niner fan, if you’re a real football fan, it SHOULD bring tears to your eyes!
Man, it’s for sure: Who’s got it better than us, little Sean?

  28. eastcoast9er says:

the joy from the game is just starting to wear out.i had about 15-18 49er friends over last night.we grilled.raised hell and had the police called on us.now this is where it gets funny.the officer that responded was an old high school friend and a niner fan.after we calmed down, he asked how long were we going to in the basement. i said for a while.well,lo and behold 90 minutes later guess who showed up with a case of beer and a glass of merlot for my oveworked wife:my police friend and his wife.we hit the tivo and the party was on again.pretty cool.people finally left and i shed some tears.

  29. KT says:

    23Jordan,

    Remember our deal? lol

    • 23jordan says:

Got scared huh? A scared man never makes money? I was looking for you. I guess you lost your computer

  30. Sean in Canada says:

The more I watch the game winning td, the more amazed I am by the throw. That is threading the needle. What a perfect pass.

  31. Neal says:

Don’t want to beat a dead horse, but I am wondering if the Rev was rooting for the Saints or the Niner’s. He must feel like a total loser and embarrasssed, or maybe not.

    • Stan says:

He must feel like the guy who was replaced by Einstein…and he thought he was pretty smart=”Einstein? that punk kid?”

      • Neal says:

Remember him being interviewed on the blow hole leader says he was going to be one of the best head coaches of all time, he will never get a chance again, maybe Pop warner that is about it.

  32. HoustonNiner says:

I think a lot of you are too young to really remember that the stat lines that AS put up are very similar to Joe Montana’s. He didn’t get complaints AS does because he had success early. I am not saying AS is Montana, but that you really have to have a good coaching staff and surrounding players to make it work. Steve Young lived through years of poor stat lines and bench time, but when he had his chance put up better stats than Montana. But until he had a Superbowl win he never got credit. We need to support our team and players. I believe fan support gives them confidence. With the mix we have now they can be successful.

    • HoustonNiner says:

I know I should probably check the stats, but I remember Montana averaged about 20 TDs and 10INTs a season for his first 5 or 6 seasons. And barely more than 3k yards. I think when you win and your team seasons with the playbook then the offense opens up more and more. Defensive discipline is really what gives the offense leverage. Looks like that is the philosophy we have found again.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Houstonniner

Well, no matter what, we have that stat thing in common. : )

I don’t much care about them though. My arguments never hinge on stats, but rather observation.

For instance, JS’s best play of the game yeserday was that bull rush of his in the 4th quarter where he pushed the NO OL back to DB and just beat him up. That will only go down as a hurry/pressure for JS, something that nobody really cares about who likes stats a lot (they often only care about sacks).

But, that play really was awesome. That is what I remember and that is how I judge players. From what I observe about them. Not what the numbers observe about them.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @houstonNiner

      Well said.

But, I also think the media has changed so much since JM’s time. Blogs like this never existed and people had to wait to get their information. Waiting often subdues some of the emotion one might feel at the spur of the moment, so when AS throws an int in a game, you may complain about it a lot. Even though he might win the game, you still have that thought out there, and you may choose to ignore the fact that AS later won the game and only focus in on that one play (int) and ignore the whole rest of the game, or view the game thru the lens of that int play only.

JM did not have to got thru that. Had he done so, Niner fans would have complained a lot about him then as well. JM’s numbers in his first year as a KC Chief QB were something like 13TD’s 7 Int’s (going off of memory, so don’t crucify me if I am wrong). The point being that everybody remembers how great JM was that year in helping the Cheifs, but AS put up a lot better ratio (nearly 4:1 TD:Int), but due to the media as it is, people dismissed it till yesterday.

  33. eastcoast9er says:

my sincere thankx goes out to every fan that was at the game yesterday.you guys rocked and not once did i see one saints fan.you guys were loud, loud and louder.i was a littl jealous that i couldnt be there
but i loved the atmoshpere from the t.v.you guys are why im glad to call myself a niner fan.

  34. HoustonNiner says:

Now we have our own Rap song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw5Eld-KRuQ&feature=related

Our own swagger and our first playoff win. More than I hoped for this year, but the pride feels good. I am excited every game!! I do think all of us help make it happen. Obviously, it is the coaches and the players, but we can help bring some magic, living room to living room. Watching with 100+ Saints fans was an experience. Even my 9 year old daughter looked up from her DS and said “Did we win!!!” She was born in SF!!

    • Brotha tuna says:

Thanks, Houston, I loved the video. It would’ve been cool if there’d been one little clip of the kickoff team swayin’ and groovin’ before each ko; I bet that goofy A.Dixon got that started.
Dang, this team is going to get better!

  35. fred says:

In the 49ers tradition, you almost knew it would come down to a fantastic finish. Just like the time they beat Dallas in that famous catch. This one was more difficult and had to be a perfect throw ,which it was, the guts to go for the win ,in that situation was unbelievable and so rewarding. Davis crying after the great catch told it all, what heart these players have, this is like old time FB , i hope it stays with them, and congratulations 49ers.

  36. NinerRider says:

Very well written article. Has a really great feel to it. Gonna go buy me a press demo now just to have it. Still floating after that game. Can’t wait for next weekend. Go Niners!!!

  37. Mavin one says:

For those that questioned Smith and his return, I wonder just how many millions it will be if he gets to the Super Bowl. Wouldn’t it be something to see a rematch of the Harbaugh bowl.

    • DS94everXev says:

I suspect AS will not try to get every last penny from the Niners.

After his time here, he wants to keep winning. I can easily see him taking less money to sign another Niner/FA whowill make us even better next year.

  38. Drty 49 says:

I actually had a few tears in my eyes, there have been plenty of time I had doubt if AS could actually get it done, but I never gave up hope.So happy for AS and the rest of our Niner empire.

  39. Adam says:

Getting some love from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/american_football/16568309.stm

“San Francisco are one game away from the Super Bowl after edging out New Orleans 36-32 in one of the finest playoff games in NFL history.”

Man, how awesome is that to see: “one of the finest playoff games in NFL history.” After all the crap we faithful had to endure for all these years from both the outside and from some of our own so-called fans.

    This is just awesome.

On a side note: I”m rooting for the Giants today. Yes, I know it would be better to beat the best just like we did yesterday, but our fans deserve another one at home and Candlestick, the proud old girl on the Point, she deserves a few more important wins before we abandon her. It seems like the right thing to do. She needs to go out in style. Another playoff game and another excellent season before she’s done.

  40. Doc says:

    Grant,

There seems to be a lot of speculation about naming the A. Smith to V. Davis catch that won the game. Some AP journalists, that really don’t cover the home team are starting to name it the “Catch Two”. As we die hard Niner fans know that this was the catch made by Owens from S. Young against the Packers at the Stick in January of 99.

I think it is about time to get out from underneath the catch phrase altogether. A prominent catch like this after 10 years of loosing seasons watching our boys struggle and work hard this season to be rightfully where they are at, maybe an appropriate name should be the “Blue Collar Catch or play”

Just my thoughts, anyone else have an opinion?

    Doc

    • Max says:

Hey, Doc. As a few of us have already noted, Vernon Davis is calling it “The Grab,” which sounds pretty good to me – kinda “catchy,” you know? (Sorry, couldn’t resist the bad pun . . . )

  41. Drty 49 says:

A special thanx to all the fans who made the Stick so loud, wish I could have been there.

  42. Drty 49 says:

My man cave was a mini stadium, had my wife and 3 daughters all in jerseys, my 8 year old sat through the whole game and kepler asking me if it was alright to scream, hell yes I toll her, and as loud as you want.think we scared the dogg a few times.raising a nine family in this age is going to be fun.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @drty

I lifted the no cussing rule in our household for the game. And good thing too. If I had to put a penny into a jar for every bad word I said, we would not have a national debt. lol

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Thanks for the visual, Drty. Sounds like a great time.

  43. big niner says:

So I’ve awaken from my deep sleep post candlestick and my body is hurting. Why? I don’t know but it reminds me of my football days, minus the shoulder pains.
I left everything at the stick as a fan, I snuck in a VOOVOO zella (blow horn from the world cup) And this morning, my upper lip looks like a piece of bacon. I blew that thing so hard everytime the saints were making their way to the line of scrimage. I’m exausted!! but it was so worth it…….NINERS!!!!!
As I was leaving, a female usher at the gates told me the horn was not allowed, I responded….I’ll bring it again next week, anything for my NINERS!!!

    • Brotha tuna says:

I saw the camera pan past somebody with a long (purple?) horn; maybe you? Thanks for the effort! : >)

  44. fesnyc says:

i just keep shaking my head…a new era of Niner heroes…

and the clinching pass is from The Bust to Mr Can’t Win With Him. such stories of perseverance and redemption.

espn ran an interesting chart – Alex’s QBR by quarter yesterday:

    1Q 41
    2Q 7
    3Q 3
    4Q 91

Alex seems to become another QB when the chips are down. its not that he’s clutch, at least like Joe was clutch, to me its more that he’s unleashed, from the “game manager” role he seems to have taken on, and from whatever other things are holding him back. I wouldn’t make a big deal about stats from one game, but we’ve seen this time and again. I just hope Harbaugh and Roman find a way to get him unleashed for good.

  45. 4th and 1 says:

Alex said he would score more points and that he didn’t care how many yards Brees had. Then he went out and did it! Did you all notice how cool he was under all those blitzes? Again, Montana-like.

    • 4th and 1 says:

…not to take anything away from Joe Montana who is a Hall of Famer, 8x pro bowler and has 4 Superbowl rings but just sayin’ he looked like it…

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Don’t worry, 4th…in my opinion, we’ve finally seen a performance that works the other way around, too: I think Joe Montana would be proud to be associated with Alex’s play, especially during the (Montana Time) 4th quarter yesterday. As one of his teammates said, “What more could you possibly want from the guy?”

    • DS94everXev says:

      @4th

JM/AS/SY it doesn’t matter who the QB is if the OL can’t stop the blitz.

In this game, they did stop it. Just like the Niners of old did time and again. And just like JM and SY did, AS lead them to victory.

There is not a single lie in the above statement. Only truth.

  46. After the last Saints score, I thought that there was no way that the Niners could score quickly, in less than 2 minutes. I felt the best they could do is get a field goal, and I was praying they’d get close enough for one to send it to overtime. I just can’t believe what happened, but it did! This team has been proving it’s for real all season, and they continue to do so.

  47. Hoferfan67 says:

Many of us here kept stating previous to this year that if AS had the coaching and the fire power, he could be very good. AS proved us correct last night! Wow!!

Imagine if the 9ers can add some receivers on offense that don’t drop the ball? “Go to” guys. When you look at the stats from yesterday’s game, AS had to throw quite a few away due to Saints pass rush. When you add in the drops, AS had an outstanding game. I can still feel the excitement!

Man I’m proud of that kid. The team is proud of that kid. LC is proud of that kid. What a game! Clutch!!

    • Adam says:

Yeah, I completely agree. A bunch of us were seeing some good things mixed in with the bad stuff. Just like every other position, the guy needs coaching. He had a 103 rating yesterday. Good players rise to the occasion when they’re called on in big games. Smith has been stalled by injuries and coaching changes and has probably always been a sort of diamond in the rough – just needed someone to round up his talent and point it in the right direction. What better coach can he have than a guy who played the game?? Perfect storm for Alex.

I’ll go back to what I told Houston a week or so back: Alex Smith is a Top 10 Guy. There’s no doubt in my mind. By next season he may be a Top 5 Guy. It’s not all about the throwing yards. It’s like Montana said the other day, “I’d throw for a few yards and the receivers would take off 50 yards down the field. I liked that!” Of course he liked it, he shared those YAC stats. Our guys (other than Vernon) don’t get a lot of YAC so the yardage numbers some folks are concerned about are misleading.

Speaking of receivers, I think Crabs had a pretty rough day. May have been post-season jitters. He also had guys draped all over him that would have been called PIs in the regular season, in my opinion. But he has to fight for separation and the ball, regardless. He’s not going to get a lot of calls in the postseason. Refs tend to let the guys play a little more.

I’d say we’re due for a big receiver threat in the draft. When Morgan comes back things will look a bit better in that regard, too. I’d like to see Crabs step up this next game and make a name for himself like Vernon did in this game. He needs a little redemption too after all the stuff he’s had to go through the last couple of seasons with the foot and all the other speculation. He’s a nice kid and I want to see him take his game to the next level and get some recognition for it. I’m rooting for all my guys to make big plays!

I’m hoping MD is right: “we beat the Saints, we’re going to the Superbowl!” :)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“There’s no doubt in my mind. By next season he may be a Top 5 Guy”

Adam, totally agree. The whole team will know the offense better after off season work, draft to plug the gaps, etc, etc. Hey SY do you think AS hit the 6th gear yesterday? Ha!

Until then, can you say Superbowl baby!!! Need some more 9er magic to get by the Championship game.

BTW, really good read on NFL.com by Steve Wyche.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

So you want to risk a 1st on a WR, or go after one in FA?

Seeing how often 1st round WR’s rend to not live up to their draft position, I am always leary about drafting one in the 1st round.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Sometimes drafting a player is better to ensure chemistry.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BTW, doesn’t have to be 1st round pick.

      • Sean in Canada says:

It’s too bad Braylon didn’t work out because that’s the WR mould they need.

      • Adam says:

I’m not sure, DS. I think there are some big body guys with good hands that will fall right to the end of the first round where we’ll be picking. From an overall value perspective, those guys might be the best players on the board. We may actually be able to go “best available” player in this draft instead of need necessarily (although I think WR is a need, myself.) I was initially thinking (earlier in the season) we might need some help in the secondary but after Donte Whitner’s big hit, and then Goldson’s INT and all the stuff Carlos and T. Brown were doing?? Hell, I’d re-sign the lot of them.

I think it may be time to start thinking about Gore’s eventual replacement (or at least that style of back) and I think it may be time to start grooming Justin Smith’s replacement. I see this as being near future – maybe next season or two, just depends. Frank is starting to slow down some, I love the guy with all my heart but he won’t last forever. Same with Justin. At some point they’ll both start to decline. Justin’s been around for 11 years, he may have another three or four seasons of productivity but it wouldn’t hurt to get his eventual replacement in and get him started.

Hate to even talk about stuff like that right now, just want to enjoy this and let these guys enjoy it too. Don’t like the idea of burying anyone before their time but I suppose we all learned the tough lesson back in the day when Montana was traded away. It happens… unfortunately. We just have to enjoy the moment, be thankful for it because it won’t last forever. Things change.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah I was pulling for BE too bad he got hurt and the chemistry wasn’t good with the coaches.

Regarding the draft, time to get more weapons on the offense. Need a RB, WR, add another O lineman. TB and JH have a knack for finding tier 2 guys that have been better players than some of the tier 1 guys coming out of the draft. If they can get some really talented reserves and maybe a potential starter or two, this team is set for years to come.

      • Adam says:

“Sometimes drafting a player is better to ensure chemistry.”

Yeah, that’s how I look at it, especially for offensive skills positions. We can bring a guy like Goody over for Center and plug him in but I want guys around the QBs that will be here for a term longer than 1-year deals so they can build some chemistry.

The last couple of seasons that’s been the problem with Smith and Crabs. But you’ll notice that they get better after halfway through the season? They’re able to anticipate each other a little better. Imagine if Crabs can get an offseason with OTAs and camp – that relationship should look as good as the Smith to Morgan connection. I say “should” because I expect it will.

But yeah, I think on offense especially, you have to build a core of guys that play together that aren’t worried about 1-year deals. Get the thing built up over an offseason or two. And let’s face it, we don’t have the JR’s or the JT’s on this team yet – another parallel to ’81 (it was a make-do with the talent on the team.) You notice Walsh also cleaned house in the secondary and drafted a whole new crew. Harbaugh did that with FA upgrades. Another interesting parallel.

      • BigP says:

Crabtree, Morgan and Williams are most likely to be the top three wideouts next year. I don’t think your going to get an immediate difference maker unless your drafting high, which they are not. Crabtree looked great a few weeks ago and everybody was talking about Williams being the slot threat after he had his big TD. Vernon is the teams deep threat. He put up almost 200 yards yesterday. He has been thrown under the bus all season. He stepped up big time and confirmed that he is one of the NFL’s elite TE’s. If he gets those opportunities consistently, it will have a huge impact on the offense.

      • 49erGirl says:

Hof, Adam – totally agree on drafting a WR this year. I don’t know much about college ball, but according to all the experts this one is deep for WR’s. Guys got your eyes on anyone?

I can’t imagine this team without Gore or J Smith, but….like you said, we have to prepare for the future.

I’d also like to see them find some help on the Oline – Rachal has got to go. He still sucks, even with this great coaching team he hasn’t shown much improvement. When he came in after Goodwin got hurt all I saw was a gaping hole on the right side with him trying to tackle his assignment from behind. I wouldn’t expect an early round pick, but am hoping for a late round find.

Actually, my first draft wish is for us to have the last pick in the first round :-). After that its all sunshine and roses anyway!!!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

9ergirl, yes the 9ers need a WR. TB and his team of scouts have been outstanding finding guys a few levels deep in the draft that have talent and can contribute. They may not use the 1st round pick for a WR but may use that pick for best available, then find someone in the 2nd or 3rd round to help the receiving corps.

      • Adam says:

“Guys got your eyes on anyone?”

Not sure just yet. I like Sanu, Jones, Wright, McNutt but I’m not sure those guys won’t hold until round two. We’d have to trade up in the second to get one though I would think. I think Wright may be a bit small, we’ve already got that small, speedy guy with Williams.

Michael Floyd may end up being a top 15 pick so I’m not sure he’ll be there but if he is, that would be a huge steal.

That Streeter kid from Florida may be good in the late second round.

You’re right though. It’s pretty deep for WR talent. Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if we pick a guy up. Kind of hoping for a big red zone target but who knows.

      • Max says:

Who were the wide receivers catching the ball from Andrew Luck at Stanford this year? If they’re good enough to play in the NFL, they’d have the advantage of already knowing our coaches and the coaches them.

      • exgolfer says:

Plenty of excitement left this year, but with another solid draft, a couple of smart FA acquisitions, and further development of AS, next year should provide many thrills as well.

This team is going to be very good for years.

        WGIBTU?

    • Sean in Canada says:

Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, Wes Welker, Marques Colston, DeSean Jackson are some of the potential free agents. Welker isn’t leaving New England and isn’t the style the Niners need. I don’t believe Colston is going anywhere either. I’m not impressed with Bowe and DeSean has proven he’s looking for $$$ and lets it distract him. Maybe VJ if that is the route they want to take?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Most of those guys may get franchised or re-signed by their current teams. Good receivers are hard to come by!

    • exgolfer says:

      Adam,

You’re exactly right about planning for the future. Better to let guys go a year early, than a year late. That method worked very well for Bill Walsh. It can be very tough, but it’s necessary.

Dwayne Bowe, maybe? And draft a WR, too.

  48. Sean in Canada says:

Just felt it. The force is always here whether the Jedi are or not. lol

Now there appears to be several Jedi.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @rebel

I figured that is where you got your name.

You more than any other here may understand why I started humming the “Empire” theme since the JH hire.

The force has always been with us. Now we have some Jedi. lol

Nate Davis would have led us to the promised land!..and he only needed to know half the playbook…sounds like some car repairmen.

  53. Brotha tuna says:

Anybody else see the two pairs of fans in Niners jerseys at today’s Baltimore game? Niner Pride!

  54. Prime Time says:

One thing is clear after yesterdays game, we need a big time WR. I don’t think you get one in free agency but you have your scouts scurry the college game in hopes of finding a gem. Maybe trade up to get Blackmon or hope you find a star in the ladder rounds. But if we can upgrade this position we could be deadly on offense.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @prime

He’ll cost too much. Top 3 pick I think.

But, you’re on track. The Niners biggest decision in the offseason will be what/who to do/get at WR.

Can we leave the “should we sign AS thing behind now?”

The Niners get sombody who demands double-teams outside, that prevents the 8/9 man front to stop the run, and double teams on VD leaving him 1 on 1. And we all saw, what VD can do if he can just catch the ball 1 on 1.

  55. Adam says:

Oh boy… I see Harbowl coming. 17-3 Ravens so far.

    • BigP says:

+1 That would be the shizz.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Can’t stand Balt. RL and his pre-game act has grown old. Need some new blood to continue on in the playoffs.

      • BigP says:

Yes, the Ray Lewis dance has been stale for many years. Even more entertaining is when he is drinking Gatorade on the sidelines and immediately jumps up and starts barking at his teammates when the camera turns to him.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, what really bothered me was when the 9ers played the Ravens on that Thursday night game and the camera kept showing RL who wasn’t even playing. Now that was ridiculous!!

      • oneniner says:

…..Hof…you sound like a grumpy old man……seems you always have an issue with player showing their emotions……yesterday you were whining about showboating ……dude get with the program – its not their fault you are too old……

      • Hoferfan67 says:

One, you really are a piece of work! lol

  56. Chicago49er says:

This game was so significant in so many ways that we will never forget this moment. In addition of being so happy for Alex Smith I am tremendously excited for Vernon Davis.

All we heard was the Saints offense and how amazing is their TE! No comments about VD or his abilities, No Respect for his desire to be the best and being able to dominate any defense and guess what VD racks up 180 yards and 2 TDs with a MONSTER GAME.

Yes the same VD that people suggested to trade and the same QB that everyone labeled too soft! I am elated for the NINERNATION and SAN FRANSICO FORTY NINERS. This Offense will continue to get better next year with Alex’s growth and hopefully new addition of a few more WR and Josh Morgan.

Lets bring the trophy back to the BAY. GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    • rebelscum74 says:

going to be expensive but listening to all the crud going on in NY over the Jets, How, Sanchez is reportedly lazy, and People speaking in shadow and sneaky rats(sound familiar?) Some players allejedly Do not care if they win or lose, Hope we can keep the team mentality going. It is very apparent, Alex Smith put lots of time in his craft. Especially watching T.J. Yates miss by a little bit., They just scored, you never know, Any way credit even needs to go to Nolan for bringing Cowboy Smith to the Dline, He took him on a helecopter ride of the bay before he signed, Also we were rudderless and did bring some direction, also Singletary got Davis to play better, even Harbaugh will make some mistakes, but it takes the whole package, great leader at the top, talent, lots of people going in the same direction and luck, karma , particles or what ever you want to call it, sure fun to be going through this again!

      • jgwindsor says:

yes it was a process and previous coaches had some good aspects to what they brought to the table….neither of them though were even close to being averagein- game managers

  57. Stan says:

Note to Jim-Baltimore can be run on. And if the niners get THAT going-Alex can pass at will. And I’m almost always right. Except for that part last year where I said Alex Smith isnt worth a damn. Forget I said that.

  58. Stan says:

@DS the AS debate is over, yesterday proved that for the haters but I think most o faithful believed this was the expectation we had for Alex all along, winning!

As for WR I really like Dwayn Bowe, he is a Character guy with good speed and large carcus. I would love Blackmon and trading next years 1st and a 3rd could be steep but sometimes those move

    • DS94everXev says:

      @prime

The AS debate is over. But the hater 23J still hates.

Proves my point that he just used AS to express the type of person he is outside of football.

As for WR draft, I have no idea, NOR do I claim to have one in regards to a good WR in the draft.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

It’s better to know that you were right rather than lowering yourself any further. Enjoy the win!

      • Neal says:

        @DS,

You know I respect your thoughtful responses however all I am saying is that AS is affected by the play calling, perhaps even more then other QB’s, he was great in the first 1/4 and the last part of the 4th quarter, but mediocre at best inbetween, and I blame the call playing. This was all new to AS, GR and JH, I just don’t understand the play calling. Just because we are playing next week for NFC Championship, it does not mean we can use some improvement in the QB situation. AS has the tools, he is the complete package but if GR calls 2 bad quarter’s like he did, Smith is not going far, the 4th quarter play calling was brilliant.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof
I will take that as a compliment.

And did you see 23J’s post about me from about 60 minutes ago? I will continue to do what I have and ignore 23J. Had I not taken the high road all this time, thisblog would have become a mess. So some recognition for what I did and not reply to all the posts putting me down as a person is appreciated.

        But, make no mistake.

“I wouldn’t live with you(23J) if the world were covered in piss and you lived in a tree.” – quote in the movie Parenthood.

      • 49erGirl says:

” Had I not taken the high road all this time, thisblog would have become a mess.”

Is that what you’re doing now? Taking the high road?
If so, then let it go already.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Neal

My thoughts, and I know others here would agree is that AS is no different from any other QB. Elite or not. HOF or not. Suck or not.

A lot of things go into what we see every game. The more knowledgable posters can name a lot. But there are so many reasons that nobody outside that locker room will ever know, that us fans would have to have a “God” complex (I think more than 1 here does) to think”We know.”

And I maintain my position that I told you about in our first exchange. You don’t cheer for AS to fail or attack me with personal insults, and I’ll enjoy interacting with you or anybody else.

I would see your point about the playcalling in general if not for our14-3 record. So someboody is doing something right.

I do get mad about the 3rd and short type plays where we attempt to run outside. Especially with FG. Defenses are just too fast, and when you have that many defenders near the LOS, chances are you won’t get it.

Hence my favorite football quote from Jim Mora:
“You think you know, but you don’t.”

      • oneniner says:

…i don’t get why Hof and 49ergrl think everyone should be like them……i smell a repub….

      • Adam says:

I think Hofer and I are brothers from different mothers. We agree on almost everything, and I agree with him here.

Take the high road, your faith in Smith was rewarded – in spades, major payoff extraordinaire. Jordy can put you down all he wants, won’t make him right. You guys can hate each other all you want but the drama spilling out on here kinda sucks. All the back and forth just eats blog space and makes things miserable for those of us that want to talk football (and now get to bask in the glory of this wonderful season.)

I personally would rather revel in the splendor of this fantastic game. Some sort of record was set with Smith’s two Q4 comebacks, Vernon had great plays, Akers was money, the O-line held pretty well most of the day. The defense was… wow, the defense was the best I’ve seen since the ’81 draft. Just a fantastic day.

All the haters that called Jed “Lucky Sperm” and the Baalke haters and then the Smith haters – guess what? They can bite it. Let them be miserable with the FACT that they were wrong at EVERY turn. Who cares? They have to live with that, I don’t. You don’t either.

Just let it go and enjoy the best victory in at least the last 20 years. Don’t let people get under your skin. You were right, they were wrong. :)

      • Neal says:

        @DS,

Their are a two people on here that I have noticed that they have the I told you so God complex, they are pompous, and insecure and they are upset that I am in there hood, especially if I don’t agree with their opinions. I am saying that AS has the tools but he is not the mesiah, and he still is a work in progress and I expect AS will be even better in the next couple of years, under JH leadership. By the way the two people have gone after me, I have never responded to their posts. Also I enjoy Jordy posts, I like to hear many opinions, not to have everyone agree, this place would be a bore.

      • oneniner says:

Adam well said….but why can’t I enjoy the victory by gloating…….i haven’t insulted anyone personally….all i am doing it being happy and gloating……is that a crime?

    • DS94everXev says:

      @neal

The reason why I have the relationship I do with 23J is beyond AS.

Had 23J not said the things about me he said and boo the Niners when they win with AS, then we could be cool…no problem.

      That is not the case.

Note: I once did have some nice conv. with 23J. So, it wasn’t always like this.

      • Neal says:

        @DS,

We all can’t get along, and I don’t do name calling unless someone comes after me, I don’t understand why people on here have to be right. AS played a hell of a game, and he really had a great season but putting him with Brady, Eli, and Breez is a joke, these guys have won Super Bowls and a crap load of playoff games, maybe Alex can be that guy but just because he won one game, he is not in their class just yet. but maybe in a few weeks we can say that.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Neal

“We all can’t get along, and I don’t do name calling unless someone comes after me,…”

I know. So I chose to not read his (23J’s posts) knowing I won’t get anything out of it. I asked him among several others not to read mine as well, and I’ll do (and have) the same. That way, we all ignore each other as much as possible and make the blog nice for everybody else.

They basically have given me the middle finger and make it their priority in life to put me down, and get rid of me. And, that has not worked. Never will.

And what was AR’s last year in your eyes. Because he had gone 0-1 in the playoffs until then and because some here would be happy to eat AR’s puke at a fine dining cafe they are so obsessed with him.

And, when AS wins the Super Bowl, he will have done so just one year after AR’s. So, I don’t know how much better AR’s is.

      • Neal says:

        @DS,

Don’t know the previous drama on here, been on here as a regular maybe 2 or 3 weeks or less. All well none of this really manner’s in the long run. I am not going to lose sleep on AS career, and people’s opinion about AS. Their will always be people in our life’s that we don’t like and we just need to rise above the occasion, I already ignore a couple of people on here, just read past their stuff.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @neal

It would take too much time, and accomplish nothing if I went back and told you all the stuff 23J has done. Plus, this is a joyous week! Let’s celebrate on the blog!

“I already ignore a couple of people on here, just read past their stuff.”

That is some great advice! Things would be better for all if just a few people did not read just a few others posts. Seriously, that is almost all that it would take. I have suggested that those people all do that, but sadly, not enough people have taken me up on that simple solution.

A dreamer, and an optimist I am. What else could I be being a fan of this team who stank so bad for so long though then? lol

      • Neal says:

        @DS,
I have noticed the couple of people that have gone after me, now have retreated, and have not responded to my 2 cents worth of opinions, one yesterday made a riduculous statement that the Patriots in the start of the third quarter should stop running up the score, OMG that was absolutley crazy, now I knew what I was dealing with. Ofcourse JH would never run up a score as early as the third period, see Pete Carol USC game. No NFL coach in history would do what he suggested. lol Really that quote was amazing.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Neal

Don’t look at it like a retreat man. Ok. That might just get them angry at you and the whole blog suffers.

Just say that that they are taking the same advice that you have figured out on your own,and are just ignoring your posts. You ignore theirs and a bunch of things that would happen…don’t. lol

  60. Prime Time says:

….pay off. I’m hoping Baalke can draft a diamond in the rough.

  61. 49er42 says:

Free Agents: Sign our own; Rogers Whitner, Goldson, Grant, Akers, and of course Alex, and others.
Draft: Big fast wide reciver,d-line,o-line, corner,
other free agents: Maybe Bowe has talent, don’t know if he is a head case.

  62. Adam says:

Guess I got my answer as to whether a 30-year old offense could beat a modern pass attack offense.

    This guy agrees: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/columnist/lopresti/story/2012-01-14/san-francisco-49ers-give-vintage-performance/52563572/1

  66. Tutomate says:

With all due respect, since I have been at this blog for a short while, I have a proposition to make to all those sound of mind. To those who are not sensationalists, to those who are not trolls at heart.

From now on whether we win the Super Bowl or lose the NFC Champinship game and anything in between, let’s be civil about Alex Smith. He has earned to be renewed for I would say 4 years. He has proven that he is good enough to win games against the best of opponents, to outshine even if for just one game the most elite of quarterbacks. He has shown he is tough as nails and the he is more than just a GM he is a good QB and with the right coaching he has the potential to be great maybe even elite.

There will be times he makes mistakes maybe even be the reason we lose a game maybe even a Super Bowl but let’s not forget what we witnessed yesterday. Let’s not forget what he did. Let’s agree that with an offseason he can maybe come out to be even better than this year. This does not mean we should consider him now to be better than sliced bread (I always hated that cliche of a simile ) or consider him untouchable from criticism. Above all let’s be civil.

    @ oneniner
I have never insulted you and I’m even sorry for those who have insulted you for your opinion. But lately your personal attacks on 49ergirl are beyond the pale and totally beyond the pale. And they truly make you sound unwise. I ask you with the utmost respect to stop that. Just because she is female does not mean her opinion is less valuable. She has been wrong in some things but so have you so have I. There are women out there who know their football she seems like one. There are even women out there who know more than most of us here so please stop being sexist.

Great game yesterday. Made me shed a tear.

We can take on GB or NY don’t care who. The Honey Badger don’t give a …….

    • oneniner says:

      …its on record that I don’t like her…..

…But i don’t recall writing anything insults to her….do you have a record from yesterday where insulted her? ….

….Sure I might have said one or two things to critic her….but this is a sports blog populated mostly by males…..she should expect it….

…but have i really insulted her or said mean things to her…..like insulted her family etc……i don’t think so….

as DS stated ….whatever i said to 49ergrl would be considered strip club language not cold war language….

      • Tutomate says:

” 49erGirl is what is wrong with America today”

        “…hey lady…..GO watch OPRAH”

        “your opinion is useless”

      • Tutomate says:

Obviously the disgusting comments of a sexual nature were coming from a truly disturbed person. My objection to your comments were of a sexist nature.

    • oneniner says:

why can’t I enjoy the victory by gloating…….i haven’t insulted anyone personally….all i am doing it being happy and gloating……is that a crime?

      • Adam says:

“all i am doing it being happy and gloating……is that a crime?”

What’s the purpose of gloating? The people you dislike don’t care, the vast majority of us that are here trying to talk football… we don’t care either. Gloating is what, revenge? It just makes you look immature.

I’m sorry that you perceive people were a-holes to you. Some of the stuff you come up with though is over-the-top nasty. Not cool.

You were right with your support for Smith. You were vindicated. Isn’t that enough? Why trash people over it?

    • ninermd says:

Dude dont let oneniner make you think he is this big victim….He was booted from other sites because insults. And being a computer toughguy is what he is. He bashed Shaun Hill coaches, said Crabs sucked and VD also. He cares nothing about this team. Its all Alex Smith. Go back and look at the Christmas day blog. He was trolling around looking to pick fights. That and the fact he has been banned should tell you all you need to know. The guy is a low life. Who comes on here after one of the greatest games in history and tries to poison it, with Alex Smith comments and insults? I guess the same guy that did it on Christmas. Go back and look at how many times he mentions VD or the team. AALLLLLL Alex Smith. This guy doesnt count here. He has one person backing him. He is a sad sad troll with no coin in his little toll bag!

      • Tutomate says:

I understand even though I don’t comment much Ive been around a while. So I know.

I was hoping to appeal to reason.

    • 49erGirl says:

Tutomate – thank you for trying. Unfortunately there are just some people you can’t reason with.

That guy has said plenty worse than that, but it doesn’t bother me. He tends to make himself look bad and his comments towards me usually just add to that. I’m perfectly OK letting him self destruct :-)

  67. oneniner says:

…Congrats to all niner fans out there – those of you that believed in our QB and the team……..not you haters!!!!!!

To the Haters – just a couple of posts saying Alex was clutch or good wont do it…….you need to earn your respect…….and plz dont tell us how to enjoy the win or be adults…….it was not our fault you were wrong….own up to your decision and shut up!!!!…..you reap what you sow!!!!!!

…….sad to read two 49er fans were shot by a NO fan yesterday in georgia……one in critical condition….I pray they survive….

    • ninermd says:

I was hoping one was you. But then again your not a 49er fan. And who told you , you were the last word on who a 49er fan is? Your the Pres of the Alex Smith club. Enjoy your day in the sun and US 49ER FANS will enjoy our team win too. Because I know VD had nothing to do with those throws and the win. Because he sucks and Crabs sucks too. Because you said Oneniner. And while your telling everyone to “Eat Crow” grab yourself a plate and fork and dig into the Crabtree and VD crow line. Bon Appetite sucker! NIIIIIIIIIIINERS!!!!!!!!!!! WHEEEEW!~

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oneniner

The person is new. Won’t do anybody any good to try and explain it to them.

Maybe they will figure it out on their own.

But I gave 49erGirl her chance to make the peace with me earlier today by telling 23J to stop with insulting me. She chose not too.

And for yet another reason for me to ignore her…she now claims to know my religion as well as my gender. For her fragile need to be right and loved, I will not bother to correct her.

But if she is your economic/weather person/fortune teller, I would encourage you along with anybody else to employ somebody new. She couldn’t guess the flip of the coin right 5 out of a 100 times.

A good reason why I skip her posts.

  70. ninermd says:

Finally home and Im cracking a beer firing up the Que and watching this great game like I wasnt there yesterday.

  71. OpenMinded says:

It’s taken me 24 hours to head back to this blog just to let my ticker slow down and to get my brain to wrap itself around the thought that our TEAM is back in the NFC Championship game!

One of the news articles I read today (one of about fifty so far), said the Niners threw the last haymaker, and won. I think that about sums up the game perfectly. The players came up big at every turn. Fantastic hearing Patrick say his teammates let him off the hook as his heart was low after Graham’s final TD catch. Rogers’ pass deflection was sensational. T Brown’s INT superlative. Whitner and Goldson were bringing cement, not wood.

Frank and his heart the size of Alaska, came through when we most needed him with a huge 40+ yarder and no drops on those two catches on the last drive.

And Alex… 85 yard drive that ended with a pass to #85. The 29 yard run by Alex was a thing of beauty with KW and Joe Staley’s blocks. This is a TEAM with a lot of heart and talent – a true championship team!

WGITBU??? My heart withstood the emotional haymakers and lives to love another day. Thank You Niners!!!!

    • ninermd says:

The last throw was no haymaker. Its was a calculated dagger. But what a game. For the first time I saw Willis get dominated by Graham. But I know Willis will take that and never let it happen again. I guess thats why they call it a team. Everyone played their arses off. And their will wasnt going to be denied. Fasten your seatbelt. We ARE going to the Superbowl.

      • Adam says:

I got the feeling that Willis wasn’t a 100%. He looked just a bit slow like maybe that hammy wasn’t without a little pain. But then again, you have to give it to Graham, damned good tight-end.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninermd/Adam

        Interesting take.

From what I saw, it took a perfect pass from DB and a great catch to beat PW on both those TD passes. He did what his height allowed him to do. Sometimes the other guy just wins that battle.

But PW and the team won the war and are now within 1 home win of the Super Bowl!

  72. Drty 49 says:

Ok I am trying to keep it football, my flesh is weak, Tut, u r what’s wrong with america, go back to your moms basement u sexist pig, if u don’t have something positive to say to our 49 girls shut the f up.

    • Tutomate says:

Tut? Was that directed to me?

    • Tutomate says:

Those were quotes from oneniner not my own words.

    • ninermd says:

Cmon guys. Are we really going to go back to fighting again? After the brotherhood I felt at the Stick yesterday. And a great win. How can us 49er fans still be fighting? Lets enjoy this. Its been waaaayyy to long.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I don’t know ninermd.

I asked you if we are done fighting, and you did not reply earlier today in the grade blog I believe.

I asked 49erGirl to tell 23J to shut it with the attacks at me and she said no. Then proceeded to tell me what my faith is because she knows me better than I do

So, md…are we done with the fighting?

And if not, it is not necessary to cuss me out. A simple “yes” or “no” reply will suffice.

      • ninermd says:

ds…….. I didnt get your message. I was replying and posting from my phone out of town. Yes. I am done with the bickering. Like I said a moment ago. If I can hug grown starangers after “the grab” I can certainly bury the hatchet on here with some of you…except oneniner thats waaaay beyond repair, but yeah. There is NO more doubt what Alex can do. He shut me up and proved me wrong moths ago. Lets all celebrate this season and get ready for the next Dynasty and multiple Superbowls in the future. Wheeeeew!

As of right now Im in the middle of the second Q on the TV replay. Thank God for Fast forward. The 2nd and 3rd were crap. ;-)

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

        : )

If things are that bad from your end with oneniner, just ignore his posts. He needs to vent it all, and I understand why.

I can assure you that in time, things will calm down. oneniner has told me the one person he can’t make ammends with was Tim.

He did not mention your name. So maybe one day.

I think we both owe a shout-out towards prime and yourself. lol

As I was watching the game I caught myself smiling a lot with the job you did with the crowd. You guys gave him (AS) energy down the stretch.

And don’t skip the middle quarters (ads ok to skip). The true greatness of the game/AS/D/VD/etc. can only be truly realized by seeing the not so good parts. That’s what I think anyway.

      • ninermd says:

Naaa I wont skip any quarter. I might see myself on TV. lol Im telling you Ive been to a lot of games over the years, and the loudest I heard was the 2002 comeback my drunk wife was sleeping through, but after yesterday. We rocked that sucker like it was 1981. Now I can say for a moment #11 kinda looked like #16. Surgical and methodical driving down the field. I just kept saying 1981 1981 1981.. I really had full confidence that it was his time. It was time for the past to be buried forever and for him to start a new. Can you imagine the confidence he will have in pressure situations for now on. Next year I fully expect him to get better with some of his flaws. But clutch situations isnt one he needs to work on anymore. What a game for him whitner, rogers, J Smith, and of course Vernon. I cant wait till next week.

    • ribico says:

      Sarcasm, Tuto.

      I think.

  73. Hoferfan67 says:

Ravens/Texans game was another snoozer along the lines of NE/Den game. Best teams are now in the NFC.

    • ninermd says:

By far. And the best one in the NFL was beatin yesterday. So IMO that makes us the best. I said it ;last week and still believe it….”Whoever wins the Saints v 49ers game is going to the Superbowl”. We are Hoff! Can you believe it?

      • NinersRoc says:

        @MD

I have to disagree about us beating the best team in NFL yesterday. I think we beat the 2nd best team in the NFL yesterday. I think the media hype in favor NO leads people to believe they were the best, but there too many red flags that they actually never had answer to fix them. All of our red flags, we answered to them. Red Zone (FIXED!), can Alex win in a shoot out and carry the team (YES!), so with that we were really just a severely disrespected “Best Team” in the NFL!

      • ninermd says:

Roc….Hard to argue that. Yes I think we were underrated. But just the fact that the Saints were red hot, and experienced and broke offensive records. I thought they were the best in the NFL. GB…..No defense, no O-line…..NYG Way to streaky. I still believe if we had gotten beatin by the Saints. They were going to the Superbowl. I think the best team was coming out of yesterdays game. Im glad its us. The New Kids on the Block.

      • NinersRoc says:

MD, I certainly agree with that! And clearly the Giants did NOT beat the Packers, the Packers beat themselves. It’s gonna be a tough game, but I think we’re going to the SuperBowl!

  74. Stan says:

If the Texans had a decent QB-they would have opened a can of woopass on the Ravens.
    49ers-Brady…THATS your Super duper Bowl.

  75. EdgeOfChaos17 says:

@DS its just a blog bro chill out haha! Damn I don’t understand why you care so much what ppl say not like you kno them! Stop saying you don’t read there stuff when clearly you do.. haha let’s just all enjoy this we won! We should all be happy

    • DS94everXev says:

      @edge

No. I don’t read their posts. Please don’t be yet another person who insists they know what I do or who I am.

I’m just smart enough to know that they post really on only 2 main things.

      1. AS sucks.

      2. DS/Prime/one etc sucks or some variation of that theme.

I do read the posts of others who discuss what they write. And guess what? It is almost always about the things I said.

That is not the same as reading their posts. And I never read the crap about me. I could care less about what they say.

    • ninermd says:

No. I don’t read their posts. Please don’t be yet another person who insists they know what I do or who I am……ds

Yet it typed in. “Wheres Jordan 23 posts?”. This and Oneniner are the victims on this blog. Just cant let go. But why would they? Their team “Alex Smith” had a clutch, top tier, magical, monster game yesterday. Alex Smith served plates of doubt my a$$ now months ago. It seems they are more shocked at how he played than the doubters ‘like me’ of the past. Smith shut me up 10 games ago. Not worth it to argue with DS….. Its always the victim. GO 9ERS!!!

  76. Prime Time says:

I want the Giants at home! As for all the bickering, what’s up folks, we’re going to NFC Championship and winning trumps anything.
Watching this game between GB and NY, I think we can exploit both defenses especially in the run game. Can’t wait til next Sunday!

    • ninermd says:

True that. Like I said. Smith shut me up months ago. And for the first time yesterday. I truly had 100 percent confidence in Smith that he would drive us down into scoring position. It was and IS his time. He is the poster boy for “What doesnt kill you only makes you stronger” The guy has shut up his critics Steve Young style. And Im perfectly fine with that. I hope I can see him and my team next week at the Stick, but it would be absolutly awesome to see them roll into GB and beat the Pack. Wheeew Superbowl bound Prime!

  77. Drty 49 says:

@tut, if those weren’t your words, than I apologize.that was some BS.

  78. EdgeOfChaos17 says:

if you careless why do you bitch about it? Js seems like you do care since all you do is cry bout it everyday its the same thing from everyone not just you. Everyone needs to just end the lameness and enjoy this! We are 1 game away from going to the superbowl! :D

    • ninermd says:

WORD!!!! If I can hug total strangers after one of the greatest pass and catch. I could certainly bury the hatchet with some fans on here. You said it all. WE ARE ONE WIN FROM GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL. What an accomplishment.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @edge

I only discussed it today because people want to stop the fighting.

And it would appear that ninermd and myself are cool now. So I think it was worth it today.

I’m sorry if that offends you.

And I am completely stoked over the Niners! And neither of these teams (NY/GB) will make it past us if they play like this against us.

  79. NinersRoc says:

The most significant play that isn’t getting talked about…Frank Gore’s 47 yard run to keep us in the game! He wasn’t having a great day in his first playoff game of his career, but he broke a big run when we needed it most! Frank is one of the unsung Herod of the game. His blitz pickup was on point all day!

As for WR, I think Crabtree turns things out next week! Plus, our secondary has not played two bad 4 quaters (or games) in a row. I think they come prepared next week and we knock off whoever is in front of us. Green Bay doesn’t have nearly as many weapons as N.O. and their defense isn’t as good. Also look Willis to get fully back into game shape. Our defense took out the best offense in the NFL and OUR offense put dueled them! If we stay focused we WILL take it all!

This thing is getting ready to explode!

    • Tutomate says:

True that. It was great run at the right time.

I think Crab will be better next week too. I going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was overwhelmed by the occasion and that it is all out of his system.

    • ninermd says:

Yes sir the Gore run was huge at the time. And I said to my neighbors and boys in the seats he would break off a 50 yarder. I was a couple of yards short, but hey close enough. I also said Smith would have 300 yards. I predicted that twice this year and it was the two 290 games he had. Again close enough. I was dead wrong about KW going for 150, but VD did… Close enough. lol OK maybe not. But we are doing some special things, and its only year 1. Wheeew. Your right this is getting ready to explode!

    • big niner says:

the old Gore would have ran that all the way, but he has lost 2 steps….all of those injuries, both ACL’s and his hip has taken a toll. Crabtree had a horrible game despite his TD catch. Two of his drops could have gone deep, maybe even scored. had he caught them, the game wouldn’t have been this close. We should have blown them out; Period!!

      • NinersRoc says:

Certainly Frank has lost a step, but 1) Frank has never been considered a burner, and 2) even a young Gore wouldn’t have taken it to the house, the DB took a great angle to prevent him from taking it to the house.

As for Crabtree, yes a dropped a couple but only one would’ve been for significant yardage. The others he would’ve been down immediately…plus at one was broken up by good defense. I’m not worrying about him. Crab’s a hard work, and he’s proving himself worthy every week!

      • ninermd says:

Theres one drop from Crabs I have to fault Smith for. That slant was thrown waaay to hard. But the slant he cauht the TD for was huge. It was in the redzone. ;-)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, really? Too hard? Ever see AR throw? Every pass is zipped…I’m noticing that quite a bit again as I’m watching the game. MC needs to step up.

      • ninermd says:

Hoff he does…. But where I was sitting that ball was thrown way to hard for how short it was. I havent gotten to that part on the old replay here. lol. Trust me. He was open at times yesterday. I think next year with more time for Alex he will be taking those shots downfield more often. With that confidence boost yesterday. I see him reaching the top 5-7 next year statis wise. And Crabbs will help him get there.

      • Adam says:

The thing I noticed was that Crabs had guys hanging all over him. Normally that’s a PI but I think the refs kinda played this a little loose and let the guys play.

The other thing is that Crabs may have had a little post-season jitter thing going on – just some nerves. I noticed on two of those drops he looked down at his hands like he was in shock that he missed those or maybe he didn’t like the gloves.

Hard to say. I think he settles down and has a better game, Sunday.

      • DS94everXev says:

I think so as well Adam.

(Don’t know if that scares you or not. lol)

But MC needs to play better. You know that the Giants are going to have VD like triple teamed and try to stop FG and KH from running the ball all day.

That is going to have to expose the secondary to 1 on 1 coverage for much of the game, and for MC to be a true #1, he needs to be great in 1 on 1 coverage. Doesn’t mean he has to run a 4.1 40s but he needs to make those catches.

  80. Tutomate says:

Giants getting mugged by the officials.

    • big niner says:

      that was garbage

      • Hoferfan67 says:

How could they watch that on instant replay and not call that a fumble?

      • ninermd says:

Hoff……because David Stern is sitting in the booth. lol The refs tried the same with us early yesterday, but at least they swallowed their whistles for us also.

      • Adam says:

That fumble replay was clearly a crock. I couldn’t believe that when I heard the call after the replay. Somebody’s blind or FOX screwed up again and didn’t get them the replay fast enough – like they did to us.

    • ninermd says:

In Green Bay? NO WAY! Ive never seen that before. LOL

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Bunch of BS…refs!!

      • big niner says:

remember the Don Beebe TD against Pope? when he caught the ball and tagged down….but the officials batched the call.

      • ninermd says:

Oh God Big……………. That game and call got me and a buddy in a bar fight with some Packer fans. And it was at the course I use to play at. Worst call ever.

    • ribico says:

Not to sound cocky (oh, why not???), but neither of these teams are scaring me.

  81. big niner says:

That was a horrible review !!! that was a fumble. I hope we don’t get this crew next week..

  82. eastcoast9er says:

alex smith, vernon davis.both are heroes in my book, but my MVP award goes to justin smith.that MAN has a motor that never stops.just imagining brees walking through his house still trying to avoid him.thats my hero.. i will never 4get “the grab”,but jsmith is a lunatic on a mission.

  83. Tutomate says:

Eli had time to eat a sandwich.

  84. Tutomate says:

Alex would have taken the sack. I think.

    • DS94everXev says:

      I said the same thing.

Does anybody here think that both of these teams seem to suck so far?

Lots of drops/bad passes/bad decisions from 2 of the elite QB’s.

      • Tutomate says:

Yeah there is still a whole 2nd half but so far from What I’ve seen I think our d is drooling at both of these teams.

      • ninermd says:

Thats what kinda scares me.Their both wasting turnovers we could use next week. Wheew!~

      • DS94everXev says:

        Hail Mary TD!

I called for a quick out pass to attempt a FG.

That is why I am blogging and I am not a HC in the NFL.

      • ninermd says:

lol ds… yesterday I was screaming td not fg. Loved the aggresive calls and plays by our team. I couldnt have survived an OT quarter.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninermd

Would it be your heart or your voice that would require medical assistance?

        For me it was both.

      • ninermd says:

ds…….def both. Im sucking down Halls and Bud Lights. Mentholated beers… mmm yummy. lol

  85. Tutomate says:

Both quarterbacks have had a lot of time in the pocket.

  86. Tutomate says:

Interisting article from Green Bay. I was thinking something similar myself.

    http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/49ers-could-pose-problems-for-packers-763p14k-137366093.html

  87. Neal says:

I can’t stand the Giants, but I want them to win, so we get them at the Stick, GB looks very beatable

    • Adam says:

I never forgave them for celebrating after Leonard Marshall’s hit on Montana. That damn near crippled him to hear Joe tell it.

      • msclemons67 says:

I’m with you Adam. I was rooting for the Giants today but it felt dirty. Like I was rooting for an insurance company trying to deny benefits to a kid with cancer.

Heck, it felt like I was rooting for the cancer. I HATE the Giants.

  88. Hoferfan67 says:

Eli, threw up a prayer and it was caught. Ha! Maybe another game at the Stick is so far fetched??!

  89. 49er42 says:

I hate the N.Y. Giants, as a Cal Alum I like Rogers, but I want the Giants to win and came back to the stick to play. This area will go nuts if that happens.

  90. EdgeOfChaos17 says:

    let’s go giants! Woot!

  91. big niner says:

let’s go Giants, win the game!!!! but lose players along the way, lol

    • Chicago49er says:

Big niner its funny but somehow i was hopeing for the same thing everytime a G player went down. I know its not good sprotmanship but i am feeling really on the edge. GO NINERS

  92. Prime Time says:

    Come on Giants!

  93. Big Suede says:

The referees are the Packers MVP- without them, this would be a blowout

  94. Prime Time says:

Giants need to run the ball and use clock thus drive

  95. DS94everXev says:

Just to let you all know, I think it has been like a decade since both #1 seeds from each conference made the Super Bowl. At either rate, the #1′s have not been very good recently.

This Pack team is looking a lot like last years Pats. Playing very uptight.

  96. Tutomate says:

So High powered offenses can’t hold on to balls? uh

  97. ninermd says:

    WERE GOING TO CANDLESTICK!!!!!!!!

  98. Crab15 says:

    Home sweet home!

    • Chicago49er says:

so crab what do you think is MR. CRAB is going to show up next sunday and have a big game since the attention is going to be all on VD!

  99. Stan says:

Its Journey time!..bring on the Giants to SF..OH,how ironic.
And -Rogers All State “dance” makes a living stereotype of white people can’t dance-wink.

  100. Rick says:

If the Giants do hold on and beat GB, do you guys realize it will be a re-match of the infamous NFC Championship game of 1990-91 season. The Niners were just one first down away from a third straight Super Bowl when Roger Craig fumbled the ball. Hostetler and the Giants drove for the game winning FG and we had to watch that smug self satisfied prick Parcells act as if he had personally invented football for the next dozen years.

I would love nothing better than to take care of the Giants in the NFC Championship at the Stick. Exorcise the Craig fumble demons once and for all.

    Go Niners

  101. Brotha tuna says:

Its starting to look like Home Cooking next Sunday…….

  102. Tutomate says:

    BS Call

  103. Stan says:

Stoooopid Packers-they could have drafted Alex Smith!

    • Adam says:

Hahaha, Stan. That was actually my first thought at the end of that. Wouldn’t it be funny if someone comes out and says that in the next few days. Good Lord.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Adam

You realize you just agreed with Stan?

This must be a euphoric moment (Niners in NFC title game) for all.

      • Adam says:

I agreed with him yesterday, too. If he stays on the Niners, we have some common ground. I don’t have KNBR up here in the valley except for real late at night so I’m not following the A’s and all the other stuff going on.

        All good. :)

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

You know you can get KNBR on the computer right?

Just go to KNBR.com. Click on the 680 live green button on the top right side of the page. And you can hear KNBR anywhere you have internet access in the world (I imagine).

        http://knbr.com/ListenNow/tabid/586/Default.aspx

      • jgwindsor says:

the computer KNBR mostly don’t cover the games because they don’t own the rites to air them …..but u can get the talk show commentary, except like jim rome and a couple of others

  104. jgwindsor says:

this post season was being set up as a GPS post season…..was this going to be the statement post season where it all about fantasy stats that wins SB’s or would it be defense making a stand….well basically the result is……defense wins championships….

    NO gone
    GB gone
    NE well they had denver

on the defensive side of the ledger
    9rs are in
    giants are in
    ravens are in

    • DS94everXev says:

      My thoughts as well jg.

All this talk about greatest passing teams and offense, and who is in the Championship game?

Niner/Balt/Giants are more defensive than offensive teams (maybe NY is less so).

But only NE is an all out passing attack.

Shows the more things change, the more they stay the same. lol

      Game over for GB!

    • jgwindsor says:

i am very afraid of the NYG….they are on a mission and have a score to settle….and they look to me to be the most balanced team with swagger and they are humble right now because they have fallen short of expectations recently….so their focus will be evident……

I still don’t think the niner offense even after yesterday could be considered explosive……NYG have momentum and their overall offense is better than the 9rs …. i will have to go back and see just how close NYG came to beating the niners ….this will be a tough tough game for the niners to win

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jg

The Giants do have the revenge factor. But that teams mindset is not like ours. JH keeps track of all this stuff, and uses it as ammo for the team later like no other coach in the NFL>

Also, keep in mind something I said a long time ago (and got some negative comments for saying it):

Explosive teams tend to explode. Can’t ignore that. And, 3 of the explosive offenses from the season (and god I am tired of hearing about it) were NO, GB, and Detroit. All were teams the experts worshiped all season, and the record for all 3 in the playoffs was 1-3. With all 3 not making it.

And only NE is a really explosive team. NY is not all that explosive relying on a reliable running game and good decision from Eli (sound familiar?) to win games.

  105. DS94everXev says:

What have I said all year?

AR has looked spectacular against un-spectacular teams.

And that AR was not as good as advertised. They played nobody of consequence.

If AR does not pull an AS (bet nobody but a few here that I could say that seriously)here.

That penalty helped them on that drive for sure.

    • Tutomate says:

I think AR has been about the only good player forn GB today. His receivers dropping a lot of passes or getting stripped.

    • BigP says:

The guy has played lights out all year long. He has played pretty well considering the amount of drops and turnovers they have had today. Don’t start your nonsense again, he already has a Super Bowl.

      • DS94everXev says:

        BigP

I said the AS debate would end this year while many here were calling him a girl. It seems to have now.

I told you that AR was very fortunate last year in the timing of when he played teams last year, and this year the Pack played nobody who was really good and dominated them. Losing to KC.

Those are the facts. You fought me tooth and nail on both and were wrong.

Admit it and move on, or choose not too. I know what I said, and what you said. No need to rehash it. Have fun enjoying the Niners win. lol

      • DS94everXev says:

        Oh. Yes.

I also said quite early and often that the Niners will beat the Pack in the Championship game. That is IF the Pack and AR are good enough to get there as well.

        @tutomate

AR’s eyes looked a lot like AS’s for much of his career. He looked lost and upset and unable to do anything about it.

Tell me you didn’t see it. Yes he had drops, but he also fumbled the ball a few times and threw a few picks. Not the fault of the WR’s. He also missed quite a few throws. I counted at least 1TD that he missed early in the game by overthrowing the guy a good 10 yards and again in the 4th quarter on the sideline. And that 3rd down pass that fell incomplete where they went for it on 4th and failed, that was a poor pass as well.

So, he had several drops and several very bad passes facing a pass rush and a D which did not stink.

        See a pattern here?

      • DS94everXev says:

Can you say “Sorry for treating you like a jerk whenever I brought up these things that both end up being true?” If you could, it would go a long way to heal the blog.

But, you can’t even admit that JH knows more than you do.

        So, I don’t expect miracles.

      • BigP says:

        DS,
You make no sense as always.

“I said the AS debate would end this year while many here were calling him a girl. It seems to have now.”

I didn’t call him a girl, so I don’t know what that has to do with me or the post. I also never said that he wouldn’t be here next year.

“I told you that AR was very fortunate last year in the timing of when he played teams last year, and this year the Pack played nobody who was really good and dominated them. Losing to KC.”

They won the SB last year, beating the top defense. You also were whining that they didn’t have to play the top teams like the Patiots and the Saints this season, and I reminded you that the first game of the football season was the Packers and Saints.

Those are the facts. Not your manipulated version of them. If you want to back up your lies with proof, go ahead. Otherwise, your like a little kid threatening not to talk to someone when that person doesn’t want the little kid talking to them in the first place.

      • DS94everXev says:

Still can’t admit that you don’t know as much as JH. Can you?

And, would it hurt so much to say “Sorry.” Even if you don’t know what for? That is what grown-ups do.

Can’t give a guy his props for anything can you BigP. I said things. You were the one who engaged me and started the fights. I just wrote posts from what I observed. Hint: I didn’t use stats. That is my secret.

Still waiting. Don’t worry. I won’t call you names like you have called me many times. I am above that.

      • BigP says:

And there it is, the victim card. The cycle of DS is complete. Lol.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Knew you couldn’t do it.

Either say Sorry to help the blog and think about somebody not named BigP and admit that JH knows more than you do about all things football/AS/Niners.

Can’t say I never tried folks.

        Have a nice life BigP.

Way to take the high road, DS. You sure are good at that!!!! I see the light now…thank you for showing me!

Thank you so much for keeping the blog clean – what would we ever do with out you telling us all what to do and who to like? Will you please, please, please be my friend? I’m desperate for your approval!!!

(In my best Jordan impersonation – Bwahahahahahaha!!!)

    • DS94everXev says:

      once again.

You need attention. Even from those that don’t want you to be around them.

      • BigP says:

Your just mad that you don’t get the attention. That is truly sad. You would be whistling Dixie if Grant titled a blog “DS, where are you?” You would have to leave the blog for a bit first though. I think you should try it, see if it works.

      • DS94everXev says:

        No.

I don’t really care if people reply to my posts. I told txtree that. I write for me. Not for you or anybody else.

And, I would not encourage Grant to do that to anybody ever again. That means me and certainly you as well.

      • 49erGirl says:

Thought you didn’t read my posts, DS….

No worries – I’m cool with that – I like the attention. :-)

    • Chicago49er says:

49ergirl, no worries. Enjoy the moment and dont let very, extremely sad people put you down. Some people just get a kick out of insulting others and feeling good about who they are. you are a classy niner fan. Many of us appreciate you being on this blog and a member of our Niner family. GO NINERS

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Chicago

I am neither lonely nor sad!

        : )

I feel redeemed actually. For all the crap I took for standing by my theories. How come you weren’t around to stop any of those attacks? Not mad. Just wondering.

How does one go past this in civil society? When you are proven wrong, you say “Sorry, I was wrong. I hope we can deal with one another again. I look forward to it.”

      • Chicago49er says:

Alex Smith ROCKS BABY! I am so happy i can not sit still. Maybe you can send me a chill pill since i really need it right now! NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

      • BigP says:

        Well said, Chicago49er.

      • AES says:

49erGirl, you don’t need to prove yourself around here. Misery certainly loves company. We know who you are; class! No need to entertain those who feel the need to attract all the attention.

I have been reading this blog for several months but just lately been typing in with my own thoughts, “you regulars, are a hoot to read, I hope what ever bad blood remains passes, and just have a good time needling eachother in good taste if is possible, if not I enjoy all of you and hope for the best, Giants at the stick, good team, going to be scary, but harbaugh just seems to always have the pulse of the team, one thing he appears to do better then walsh or other coaches, he does not let his ego get in the , he listens to his coaches, players and others that some people in his position would not. I wonder what his parents will do if both sons are coaching in the superbowl! Too Cheesy or Corny for real life, This has to be a Disney Movie!

      nobody!!

    • LA-LA Land says:

If someone from the future had visited me in the summer of 2011 and told me the Niners would be hosting the NFC Championship game, I would have laughed. Never, ever considered them to even make the playoffs. Still stunned. It’s been a long time since we had a parade for the 49ers, but we’re getting closer.

  122. jgwindsor says:

hosting the NFC championship game…..i never figured that

but NYG are coming with an attitude and a motto… they have some unfinished business….clearly FP soft won’t be in their locker room

i think i am going to nickname whiten…… ‘quaker because he changed the course of history, namely this game, by setting the tone of delivering the smack down…..he caused an earthquake changing the course of the game when NO looked for all intents and pursposes to be going in for a TD

  123. Chicago49er says:

Hofer baby where are YOU! We get to play at home against the Giants. What do you think is Alex going to go for 350yards, 4TDs and a couple of rushing TDs!!! GO NINERS

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Hey Chicago,

The Stick!!!! More 9er magic to come…we need MC and KW to get in the moment and play some ball! AS will be ready. FG will be ready. VD will be ready although double teamed. Defense will be ready. ST will be ready. Let’s go Superbowl! Woohoo!!!!!!!!!

      • Chicago49er says:

LOL, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I am hoping for walker to be able to play since the G defense is going to be all over VD. But i think Alex can run all over them like Rogers did today. I want Alex to go for 350 yards and four to 6 TDS in this game.

        GO NINERS

      • AES says:

Agreed Hofe, we need these guys to play at top level. Yes, Crabtree muffed a couple of passes, but if recall he also had a TD catch.

Crabtree will be ready to go next week as will Kyle and possibly D.Walk.
I called the upset today with my inner-circle, and i’ll call a ‘huge’ game from Crabs next week.
        49ers Super Bowl 2011-12!

      • Sean in Canada says:

It would be some sort of festivus miracle if I were able to pull it off ,what with the flight, hotel and all but a guy can dream. Congrats on getting the chance to go and I have the feeling that if it doesn’t happen that I go this year, I’ll get more opportunities in the next few years.

Then be completely uncivil during the game! That is awesome man!

  125. Medic One says:

I think the MVP voting just got turned on its head. Neither of the two candidates have their teams in a position to play for a championship. You can argue that they put up great numbers, but it was against mediocre teams. Both teams were unable to beat a playoff calibur team.
You can argue that Brees did more, being on the road, outside, and had good numbers against the number 1 defense.
My argument though is that Alex Smith should be the MVP this season. I think we all would have been hard pressed to say the 49ers would play at home in the NFC championships at any point in this season. He has his team in a position to win a championship. He’s put them there all season. He’s lead game winning drives against Philly, Detroit, at Seattle and two in the playoffs against New Orleans. It might not be the goddy numbers the commentators adn looking for, but NFC chapionships, here we come!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Medic

“You can argue that they put up great numbers, but it was against mediocre teams. ”

My point precisely all year. I tried to keep that fact in people’s minds while they oggled at AR like he was some DD Natural 36-24-36 in a bikini on a hot beach in Maui and you are alone with her (or him whatever you prefer. Not judging anything here. lol)

Sometimes it actually matters what is underneath (not the bikini now, get your mind out of the same gutter mine is often in) and see what is behind (again, no gutter thinking) this person.

You can’t be great playing against weak/poor/mediocre teams.
You can only be great by beating great teams (as defined by the time you play them, not later on).

  126. Chicago49er says:

Dear Grant. would you please let us know about Ginn, Goody, Walker’s injurys! What are the chances of Walker being able to play next week?

  127. Drty 49 says:

I don’t think the Giants secondary, is much better than NO, did anyone see that when there was coverage down field that rodgers had all day to throw or run, Give the Giants credit but AR looked awful rusty after 3 weeks off, not cocky, just not scared either, honey badger don’t give a $#!+.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Drty

I noticed AR’s looking bad as well.
But that results in getting hit around here. AR’s looked a lot like AS. Know why?

Bad leaky OL not helping him out. But when that was fine it didn’t matter much because he missed a lot of wide open WR’s, not that it mattered because when the ball did get there it was dropped. And when it was not dropped it did not matter because they fumbled the ball. With the game on the line, AR’s can’t come thru and gets picked off to seal the loss at home.

Looks a lot like the Niner team of the past 9 years. Until now.

  128. Woody says:

Bring on the Giants, Alex is ready. Because Alex doesn’t give a s&^%$….Alex takes what he wants.

    • DS94everXev says:

Being a jerk to you now Woody, so accept my apologies now. But:

What word did you intend with s 4 symbols? I know you can’t really answer me.

Ok. I’m done being a jerk

The Giants will find out what they missed last time we beat them here. That would be a full on whooping!

  129. Drty 49 says:

I am going to start talking my team up now and not quit, If the Giants had played against the Saints as poorly as they played GB they would have lost, I just don’t see how they can beat us, the Saints were clearly the best team in the Playoffs until yesterday,

  130. Larry David says:

I can’t wait to read what good ‘ol Greg Cossell will have to say about this one! What excuses will he make up this time for Smith’s stellar play?

    • fesnyc says:

had the exact same thought. he’s going to reach deep into the bag of excuses and delusions to diss Alex again.

  131. Prime Time says:

Giants are more balanced offensively than GB with Jacobs and Bradshaw running hard. Yes Rodgers would be tough to contain but Gmen have a lot going for them on both sides of the ball.
We once again have to get to Eli with a 4 man rush and play tight coverage like we did against the Saints. Should be another barn burner!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Prime

I didn’t see much from the Giants nor the Pack for at least half the game. It was nowhere near as clean (playing wise) as the Niner game. Both teams sorta wondered what to do.

AR had the same reaction that KW and TB had in their Super Bowl losses when their high powered offenses just kinda went flat. A “lost” look in their eyes like they don’t know what to do since they hadn’t put up 30 by halftime.

Eli was good in the first half, numbers wise. Nearly 300 yards passing! Wish AS could have gone up against that weak secondary. Finally put an end to the non-300 game discussion once and for all.

Do you think the Candlestick turf being in bad condition will be a big plus for this game for us, or not really play a factor? Weather is going to get worse in the bay area as the week wears on, and by the end of the week, we are expecting rain.

Our run D is great, and their WR Cruz won’t be able to run like the wind as he normally does, cancelling out their one real advantage in the passing game from my perspective.

It should be sloppily played game, which favors the team which makes the fewest mistakes. And that would be the Niners.

  132. Drty 49 says:

The Giants r a well rounded team, but they just don’t have the O line that the Saints had and their rec core isn’t as good, and they won’t be able to run, they don’t use the screen as good as NO, on what level r they better than NO?

  133. Drty 49 says:

It has been way to long but can u say muscle memory, flex those guns at the stick.

  134. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

There have been a handful of times in my life when I was sure a team was going to win, one of those times happened with the Giant-Packer game this past weekend. Do I have any feeling on the Giant-Niners matchup, sorry I don’t. I’m sure you ask, did you bet? I stopped many, many, years ago. It conflicted where I was trying to get to in life.

This NFC Championship game, wow, probably one of the best match-ups in a long time. Probably won’t get much sleep this week. But you know, it’s funny, as a fan I feel as though regardless of the final score, we’ve won already. If the Giants can beat this 49er team they will have to earn it, but part of me thinks, that ain’t goin’ to happen.

  135. Drty 49 says:

#94, is a (expletive) gladiator.and possibly the smartest D lineman in the league, didn’t want to take that jersey off last night.

    • rebelscum74 says:

I felt that way about 97 B.Y. , Remember it was Nolan that talked him into coming so he did somehting right! That sack Smith had, Pile driving the all pro linemen into brees, grabing Jersey and taking him down, Awesome!

  136. Neal says:

Now we play the GMen, this is not the same team that we beat in Nov ,they are better and more complete. We stuff the run but the Gmen throw the pass, they have much better receivers then the Saints and they have a better defense then the Saints. They are a very dangerous team and we will need to play much better defense in our secondary then ever before, they will see how the Saints took it home a few times against us . We have to continue to show a huge rush and our defense has to play lights out. GB was on the downside the last few weeks and the Gmen are on the rise.

    • jgwindsor says:

      agreed

    • Chicago49er says:

Neal I agree with you this is not the same team we played! They are playing physical and their QB is playing lights out so we must beat him down and knock him out of the game. This is going to be street fight and the OL has to play their best game by protecting Alex. GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I agree with you guys, this is going to be very tough. Their D is ferocious, and Eli’s still playing at an elite level. But two things stand out to me:
First, we now know, without a doubt, that TWO elite quarterbacks will be playing in this game, and
Second, the Niners have been undervalued by virtually everyone for the whole damn season. I, for one, have seen more than enough from them to be cured of doubt. After what they’ve accomplished this season, in spite of ALL the obstacles, how ya gonna doubt them now?

  137. Drty 49 says:

I don’t think that Giants rec core is better than the Saints, their pass attck isn’t any more lethal, their D is better but not where it will hurt us, if they rush more than 4, we have the ability to make them pay

  138. Crab15 says:

Vegas point spreads for you gamblers:
49ers are 2.5 point favorites over Giants and over/under is 43.5 points.
Patriots are 7.5 point favorites over Ravens and over/under is 50 points.

    • BigP says:

Figured the Niners would be favorites. Can you imagine the hype if it is an all Harbaugh Superbowl? It will be insane.

  139. Drty 49 says:

Anyone have any injury update, for us or G men

    • Tony says:

Delanie Walker on Twitter said he worked out Today and is getting ready to play in the NFC Championship game at Candlestick against the G-Men…

Ted Ginn, I fear is going to miss this game…

G-Men, Cantor and Cruz got banged up but, i’m guessing news on them won’t come out till wednesday practice.

  140. jgwindsor says:

and the rains begins this wednesday …. just don’t know how much yet

  141. jgwindsor says:

as my final post i still want to point out i think it was MC not KW that sealed off the end on AS’s TD……i keep looking at that play and see #15 not #10…and he didn’t crack down on a DE it was #22…..

i just want to give MC his dues to mitigate his dropped pass….MC is a worker

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I agree, JG. His shyness, coupled with his injuries (and his association with a couple of jackasses) have put him on the wrong side with a lot of fans, but the word from inside the building is he works very hard, generally has good hands, and overall, is a very good guy. Hope he can shake off the jangled nerves this next game. Could be Michael’s turn to be the hero!

  142. NickRow says:

Grant, it’s time for a new thread …

  143. msclemons67 says:

Two pieces of great news today.

    1) Giants beat the Packers so the NFC Championship Game is in San Francisco. Keep repeating that to yourself until it sinks in. The road to the Superbowl goes through San Francisco. I probably won’t survive next Sunday. Tell my wife I loved her.

    2) The Rams offered the Offensive Coordinator position to Brian Schottenheimer. Only one thing is as close to making me happy as the 49ers winning and that is the Rams sucking. Hiring Schottenheimer ensures a few more years of Rams suckage. The football gods are kind.

    • Crab15 says:

msclemons – All Schottenheimer’s are known for choking in the playoffs! Thanks for the great news. I think Jeff Fisher’s a pretty good coach though.
I will tell your wife you loved her bro. :-)

  144. rocket says:

Well I’m a little late to the party. Enjoyed this epic win while relaxing in Maui, where there are a lot of 9er fans by the way.

It’s all been said already about Alex having a statement game and such, but seriously people we’re all fans of this team. Who cares who said what and who was right? Is your self esteem that low that you have to bitch at each other over who supported this player or that player?

The 49ers just gave us another incredible experience to put in the memory banks, just like they did for many many years, but haven’t been able to for a decade. This game yesterday was special. It should be enjoyed and shared by all 9er fans because it was for all of us. Whether you believed or didn’t believe is irrellevant; the teams success is all any of us have wanted for a long long time and they pulled it off yesterday.

The San Francisco 49ers, a team with a new Coaching staff, no offseason, questions at QB, coming off a 6 win season…are one win away from the freaking SuperBowl…Stop bitching at each other and focus your energy on supporting this team. They deserve it. They’ve earned it and we should all be proud to be fans of this team.

    In Harbaugh I trust.

    • exgolfer says:

      Rocket,

For me it’s not about my self esteem [that comment was more than a little condescending on your part, IMO], it’s about the posters who bashed Smith, and those who dared to even be ambivalent about him, with absolutes to be fully accountable for what they said. Imagine someone punching you in the face day after day after day based on erroneous information. Then one day, they have an epiphany and realize they were wrong. So they say, “How about that? We were wrong, all good, right?”
