Carlos Rogers on free agency: “It’s about trying to keep this team together.”

SANTA CLARA – The Niners free agent cornerback Carlos Rogers spoke at his locker this afternoon and here’s what he said.

Last night in my grades I said I didn’t think the Niners would resign him. After listening to Rogers speak today, I’ve changed my mind. I think he’ll be back.

Q: Why was Victor Cruz so effective in the first half?

ROGERS: “That man runs around so much. He runs a lot of option routes. If you’ve got inside leverage he runs outside (and vice versa), and pick moves with the tight end. In the second half I was like, ‘If I play outside, I’m going to run inside when you chop your feet or break down.’ In the second half he just had one catch. I just said, ‘If we lose this game it’s not going to be because I gave up six or seven catches in the first half.’ I was just going to put it on me to shut him down since I was in there by myself most of the time, and I think we did a pretty good job of that in the second half of containing him and containing their whole offense. We gave our self a chance to win.

Q: You can’t just react – you’ve got to anticipate when you’re covering the slot?

ROGERS: “Yeah, that’s why a lot of people don’t want to play it”.

Q: How tough is it when it ends so abruptly?

ROGERS: “It’s tough. Everybody always looks at the play that Kyle made because that’s their last memory of the game. There was so much stuff throughout that game we could have done better. Me personally, even though they didn’t result in touchdowns, but the first and second down catches that I gave up – I always look at myself and what I could have done.

Q: Does it give you motivation moving ahead that you guys got this close?

ROGERS: “You never know when you’re going to get this close again, that’s why I tell the guys to cherish every moment and give your all when you can.

“Some of these guys are asking me what I’m going to do, if I’ll be back, things like that. That’s my biggest thing – it’s about trying to keep this team together. Because I think we’ve really got something special here. There are always bits and pieces you have to fill. The coaches and general manager will decide that, but keep this team as close as we can. I think we’ve really got something special from the top down.”

Q: Is it your preference to be back here?

ROGERS: “My preference is to be back. Like I said, for four or five (years) I want to be back. Like I said, I’m going to leave that to my agent’s hands. He just got through talking to some of the guys upstairs about that. Now it’s about putting the team first in my decision, and also you want to be compensated for where you think you’re at or where the market puts you at. But also think about this team and not about self. That’s what I’m going to go into the offseason thinking about.”

Q: Did you get an optimistic vibe from them that you guys might be able to work something out?

ROGERS: “That’s what they said. They want to get it done, want to go on and get started on it as soon as possible. Hopefully I don’t even reach free agency. They said they want me back. They definitely want me back, but at the same time will they be able to match the highest bid if I hit free agency and still keep this team together? Probably not, so they just said, ‘Keep your mind on the team first.’ They’re going to try their best to get the job done.”

Q: Would you take a hometown discount to stay?

ROGERS: “Hometown discount? I would take a team discount. Hometown discount – I think that’s real low (laughs). But just consider the team first. I definitely will. Like I told them, I like this from the owner to the general manager to everybody that’s in this organization. I like everything about this organization – all the players, the trainers. This ain’t about me coming out and saying, ‘Now I’m free, let’s get the check.’ I’m thinking about this team, and this is where I want to be.”

THANK U ALL TO THE 49ERS THANK U FOR THE YR NOW LETS KEEP EVERY1 TOGETHER GO NINERS

  2. Mike in SF #2 says:

You can never have enough good corners. We need to keep Rogers around.

  3. DS94everXev says:

“This ain’t about me coming out and saying, ‘Now I’m free, let’s get the check.’ I’m thinking about this team, and this is where I want to be.”

I hope to God that he keeps this attitude come the contract meeting. We need to keep CR here.

Hopefully TB is ok. I think he was the most improved player of the Niner team (including AS).

      @ DS94everXev,

You may want to have a more firm understanding about posts before commenting. Refer to blog post on “Poor Kyle Williams”

  4. El Seth says:

They’d be crazy not to resign this guy.

  5. Andy44 says:

Carlos is a class act, both he and Goldson need to resigned. Get a wideout or two this offseason and sky is the limit. Tuff loss, but great season. This team took charge of their own destiny early in the season and maintained it. Unlike seasons past we can go into the off season knowing there is a bright future for this team. That said, I do feel bad for the defense, they played great in the second half.

  6. tkamb says:

If he is willing to take a cheap deal then they should resign him but if hes asking for the top corner money at his age I would show him the door. I like what we’ve seen from Culliver this year and I think hes going to be a great corner and there are some other great corners in free agency like Grimes, Carr, and Finnegan who are younger and just as good.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

He’s not worth the big money. Culliver is emerging and that front seven makes any DB look good. I would explore every option to sign him short of outlandish numbers. I would concentrate on Goldson, he’s a lethal missile back there.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

DG is no TP of Pit.

CB is more important than S.

DG had a good year in a 1 year contract after a mediocre career.

DG took out TB and broke up 2 Ints in the title game.

I don’t break the bank on DG.

  7. philly9er says:

Of all the niners UFAs I’d sign Morgan,Rogers,Snyder,Ginn as a returner,Smith,Goldson, and Costanzo for STs.

  8. brad49 says:

    I agree Carlos!

  9. Adam707 says:

Rogers is a MUST sign. We better pay the man

  10. 55niner says:

First off, I want to say that, though I’m somewhat disappointed in the outcome of yesterday’s game, I’m not hanging my head. This team far exceeded any expectations that I had for them going into the season. With that I say THANK YOU to the entire 49er organization for a great season.
Now on to Carlos, Dashon etc. Sign ‘em, we can’t afford not to. However, going into free agency and the draft, there are some holes in the roster that need to be filled, with WR being the most obvious….sign a FA or two and draft a good young wideout in the first round. There are a minimum of 5 first round quality WR’s in this years draft, and free agency has another 4-6 quality receivers. Another year in the Harbaugh system, complete with OTA’s and a full training camp, and seasons like this past season are going to be the norm and not the exception.

  11. Prime Time says:

I like Carlos too but is he not 30+ years old. That could be a big factor in signing him. Tarrell Brown is the real deal, so is Goldson, Whitner and Culliver, but we do need a lock down type guy. Is Rodgers able to do that over the next 4-5 years at his age? That will be a difficult decison for Baalke.

    • Neal says:

      @PT,
Is Rodgers able to do that over the next 4-5 years at his age? I would think that 30% of the existing team will be gone in 4 or 5 years, let’s play for next year and the year after. I love the way Carlos plays, when he makes a great play, he understates it, hate over celebrating.

    • D.Clark says:

CB’s can last! look at Champ Bailey, Woodson in Green Bay, even go back a few years and remember how long Darrel Green lasted, age isn’t an issue.

  12. Stan says:

The secondary was a weak spot all year. I dont see it as “set”. I like that hard hitter Witner..he channeled Tatum near the end of the year.

  13. Fred P Soft says:

We need to sign Smith, Morgan.Goldson,Snyder and Rogers. Let the rest go. Ahmad Brooks is gonna hit the market and go where the money is. Kyle Williams should be our reg kick and punt returner. The guy is a playmaker. Very sad what happened to him but he will be a better player for it.

  14. Fred P Soft says:

And Whitners hits where legal. So he surely didn’t channel Tatum. More like Ronnie Lott.

  15. Craps. says:

    Class, class, class.

    Sign the man.

  16. Doc says:

What ever happens, I am sure that Trent Balke has a master plan and will do what is best for the team as he did during last seasons free agent signing period. I have great confidence in him to do his job as it is my opinion that winning starts with solid front office management acquiring the right players to match the coaching philosophy.

    Doc

  17. Matt49erFan831 says:

What wideouts are available in FA? I know about Bowe, Colston, but isn’t Vincent Jackson from the Chargers available, too?

  18. Rame says:

Sign Rodgers – he’s the best corner on the 49ers and he’s got a great attitude.

Show Goldson the door – he didn’t even want to be here this year and only signed because nobody else was interested. He gave up several big plays this season, and broke up two interceptions and injured a teammate in the NFC Title game.

Grant – what’s your opinion of Goldson? He seems to have a “me first” agenda from what I can see.

    • Doc says:

      Rame,

I agree with you to some point, but he (Goldson) brings in a winning attitude. Although I don’t think you have to worry as I think Goldson is influenced by money and will follow it to wherever it may lead him. My understanding is that the Niner organization is about 30 million under cap so resigning him is a possibility, but then again last year Balke was ready to let him go after offering him a contract somewhere in the area of 20 million over 4 or 5 years. Then he wound up getting him at a bargain rate because nobody was interested. Because of his Probowl stature Goldson will command top dollar on the open market so as much as I would like him to stay, as he knows the defense, he may go elsewhere.

Although, after observing Balke during last seasons free agency market, I think he has a very good handle on best available players and excellent prices and will know how much to spend and what is important to this team.

      Doc

      • OpenMinded says:

Goldson’s agent is Drew Rosenhaus. Dashon is coming off a Pro Bowl year. Another Rosenhaus client, Frank Gore, was coming off a hip injury and signed for less years and less money. Wave bye bye to Goldson.

I like his play and will be sorry to see him go but having Rosenhaus as the agent makes me think it’s time to draft another ball hawk with speed and tackling prowess. Tough to find, which makes TB’s decision a very tough one.

      • exgolfer says:

The problem with Goldson IMO, considering the 49ers have Whitner, is he’s better suited to be a strong safety than a free safety.

  19. jgwindsor says:

of course what do i know……

lot of things to keep in mind when looking at the whole picture…..niners have 10 first round picks on the roster….a number of those picks are FA…..how many free agents? …. 20 or so….would have to look at the core of this defense and decide whether niners are going for it in the short term

didn’t the team leave 15 million on the table in cap this year….can’t be rolled over…..actually was surprised the niners didn’t go get a receiver of note just to rent considering they lost Josh early, then let braylon go and then basically counted on a possession rcvr and 3 or 5th rounders to round out the squad….maybe decision was made that little would be gained bringing in someone that doesn’t have the system under their belt…can’t say

carlos wants 4 years…..that is a pretty long contract for a CB that may only be OK for 2 more years…i had issues with his pursuit and tackling even when he had his interception thing going on…..maybe front load the contract…

goldson …. niners had trouble signing him before and he may have screwed himself …but he did have a good year … and their isn’t this lockout looming this year so i believe he will get a different look in FA then what happened to him last year…. he may be hard to keep…. i would like to resign him

    want whitner resigned as well…..

AS although did well this year did not in my estimation make this offense his own…..maybe it was a weapons thing….i think it was….but i don’t want to see a 3-5 year deal….i would offer a semi-lucrative two year deal with option for third….8-9 mill/yr

JH and staff are a TE centric power running game centric coaching staff….
may want a WR but i don’t think baalke will go WR in first round…or that a top level WR will be picked up in FA…..just the way the team acted this year with respect to the WR position i don’t think they want to spend much money there…..

Ahmad brooks…like him to be resigned also….
not sure if harrilson is a FA

maybe should have an article that identifies the FA list on the niners and also a list of players that have 1 year remaining….

  20. rocket says:

They pretty much have to re-sign Rogers. Who else do they have to replace him? He was our best CB this year and is only 30 years old right now. A 4 year deal would be very reasonable.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

He says the right things when it comes to “team first”. It’ll be interesting to learn how it actually shakes out, dollar-wise. When it actually comes down to it and isn’t just words, does he stay for less money, or leave for more? Does he expect the Niners to pay whatever top dollar turns out to be for him? Or would he leave money on the table, to help pay for keeping some of our other FAs?

I’m from Missouri. Show me, Carlos.

    • exgolfer says:

      Rocket,

4 years would be OK, especially since 4 NFL contract years sometimes equals 2 calendar years.

      niner times,
I believe this orgainzation is truly set up for the long haul and they will be able to sign most of those men eligible for free agency before the new league year begins and after…the WR position intrigues me(crabs, williams, only ones signed)..alot of people feel the niners can address this one through the draft, but I’m not too confident with that. They need to listen to their draft board and pick the next best ball player…Teddy Ginn needs to be resigned for sure as evidenced on what can happen with an inexperienced punt return specialist in a big time game vs a big time opponenent..Prior to the league year ending, they need to make sure those men like costanzo and gooden get signed…maybe we can take care of Morgan prior to the new league year ends…Ginn will test the waters I believe…sign all restricted free agents(Brock, Spillman,Grant,Tukuafu)…The two big names in the bunch I am real worried about….Goldson and Rogers…both had big years and both could recieve big time pay outs…I don’t think these two are replaceable and they are both must sign guys but I bet we can only afford 1…and Goldson is going to want a blockbuster deal I believe…but we will see….last but not least is Alex Smith….gotta sign him big, I think he will have a much better year than he did this season…I really do…If we can pluck a Dwayne Bowe type of guy out of free agency the table will be set for this ball club offensively…Smith will count 8-10 mil a year against the cap to sign him to a long year deal and he is priority number 1….with all that being said this team should continue their roster building ways resign most of what ya got, make a minor splash in Free Agency, Draft the way your Draft board tells you to draft, continue to add good football players to the roster to enhance competition…and that will lead the niners to another division title in 2012, and once you hit the playoffs…anything can happen

If the Niners can get an all-world position of need, I’d trade NB to get that player, and keep Grant as the replacement.

I agree with most of you here. Let’s bring Carlos back. He’s a solid CB with outstanding attitude.

As for addressing the WR position, here are the top 10 prospects in the 2012 NFL draft (according to CBS Sports). There are also quality free agents available:

Justin Blackmon WR 1 Oklahoma State 6-1 215
    Kendall Wright WR 2 Baylor 5-10 190
Michael Floyd WR 3 Notre Dame 6-3 224
    Mohamed Sanu WR 4 Rutgers 6-2 215

    S Dashon Goldson focus
    LB Tavares Gooden
    LB Larry Grant (RFA) focus
WR Joshua Morgan maybe as a #3 but JH seemingly verbally commited
    TE Justin Peelle
RG Chilo Rachal this one will be interesting
    CB Carlos Rogers focus

    OL Adam Snyder maybe
    DB C.J. Spillman (RFA) focus

      Why resign Madieu Williams?

He was the one who just stood there with the ball on the ground in the 2nd to last play during regulation against the Cowboys in our only regular season loss.

What good play did he make?

Is there anything that FB Moran Norris can do that any number of other guys can’t?

Trade Gore, crabtree and kapernick for a top 5 pick. With two first round picks, grab a rb and wr in the first round. Sure up the DB’s in the second rd and the o line, later. Cut chilo, Spencer and Harlyson. Draft an olb to that can cover a TE. Sign Bowe and add some Stanford players that know the system.
Sorry about the re-post. But these are my ideas, I’d also like to keep costanzo, Brock, Rodgers,Brooks and grant.

    • bryantyoung97 says:

      Big Niner-

C’mon man….really? Not trying to be rude but be realistic(Im talkin about your Gore, Crabs, Kaepernick idea)…you know thats not going to happen and thats not how good organizations manage their football teams…Gore is still an outstanding back and was a big reason for our success as was Crabtree(best season of his career-thres more problems to our passing game then him, he will continue to improve)AND as evidenced by what Chicago went through this year…you need to have good qb’s on your roster and if Alex Smith goes down we need a guy to step in and run the offense, though I do agree he has not shown what he is capable of yet(has not been given the oppurtunity)…no rash move niners fans, keep the course we are on…this team will be fine

    • DS94everXev says:

      @big niner

I don’t think those 3 players get you a top 15 pick. Much less a top 5 pick.

That list includes a great aging back, a WR who could easily be a bust and a QB who has no film on him in any real NFL game situations. You are not going to get a first round pick at all. Maybe an outside chance at a first. Remember, any team taking those guys need to take their salaries as well.

    • NickRow says:

I think the Niners will keep Gore, Crabtree, and CK. They’ll add WR, RB, and DB help via both free agency and the draft. CK could turn into a solid NFL QB. With CK, Tolzien, Alex Smith, and perhaps a free agent QB in training camp that would setup a great competitive environment.

  27. Adam says:

Nice! I like his attitude. Team first.

You had a nice season, Carlos! I’m really glad they brought you here. Hope you stick around!

  28. Big niner says:

    @Bryantyoung
I believe in getting value from a player at the right time. In the past, we traded Montana, Haley and cut Lott. Gore is not bigger than them. He has lost a few steps. A top 5 pick plus your own pick will land you two blue chippers. Who knows? What if we get a Richardson in the draft? Or that db from LSU that’s even better than Peterson from last year? He fills the punt returner position too. I think Tolzien is a diamond in the rough. Let JH find his third stringer in the draft ALA Freeman and we will be fine.

    • bryantyoung97 says:

      Bigniner-

Good points…we will see I guess, It’s hard to replace a back like Gore though, and hes still capable of 1500 yard seasons…I like Hunter but he will not be able to withstand 25 carry games like Gore can but…If they can find that kind of a back like that I’d be happy…I have alot of confidence in Alex Smith but anything can happen in this league and I truly believe Kaepernick is going to end up damn good…too athletic and a big arm(today’s NFL QB)…but like you said I bet there will be some moves

  29. Big niner says:

    @ds,
For a team that needs players now…. Why not? A reciever that needs a change of scenery, a qb with a gun and mobility and a running back that can still get you 4 plus yards a carry. Their salaries aren’t that bad, plus Gore will be two years removed from injury.
Maybe that top five is next years pick. Take a gamble with a bad team and stock pile picks.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @big niner

Because a top 5 team in the draft (we are talking about the first 5 picks of the draft here I assume) really does suck.

They need a lot of talent. In a lot of places. That is why they are drafting so high (or low, however you see it).

And not a single one of those players are game changers right now. What did CK do to prove him to be a game changer? What has MC done all 3 years to prove that he is a dependable guy you can go to no matter what? FG is injured a lot and is nearing 30.

Unless you have the retard GM of the Vikings around who did the trade for H. Walker, those 3 guys are not going to get you anything.

FG all by himself won’t even get you a 2nd round pick. The other 2 guys suck or may suck.

I proposed a trade for LF. 2 1st round picks. 1 3rd and Navarro Bowman for Larry Fitzgerald. I would do that trade because Grant was pretty good for us this year (rate him a 7 or 8 out of 10 and NB is a 10/10 with PW being a 20/10).

We give up 1 st for a WR (we need to get one anyway) for 1 year, and to get the best WR in the game, that is worth another 1st some other year. NV is great, but a LB is not as valuable in todays NFL as the best WR since JR. The other draft picks would just be cherries on top of the sundae.

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

With all due respect, that is way too much for LF. Two first rounds picks, a third AND Bowman? No way. Larry Fitzgerald is just about ready to start declining. Bowman is ascending, and is already an All Pro [he may end up being better than Patrick Willis, which sounds crazy, but is still possible].

So far, it looks like draft picks are very valuable tools in Baalke’s hands. I can’t see making that trade.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @exgolfer

How are you of the opinion LF is declining in skills? He damn near alone beat our #1 D of the decade in AZ. The guy easily has 5-9 years left.

He demands 2-teams all the time. So does VD most of the time. How many more defenders do you have left? Teams want to stack the box. How are they going to do that with both VD and LF spread wide?

A KH could break into the secondary on a swing pass, and everybody is far from him. Easy 20 yards.

Tell me exgolfer that with LF as a WR for us this year that we don’t go to and easily win the Super Bowl. LF is a perfect target in the red zone, a place where we need to improve.

Considering how much the Falcons gave up to get Julius Jones, and he didn’t light the world on fire, how much more are you going to get from LF. Remember, LF nearly single handedly beat all the NFC teams in the playoffs and the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Greatest post season ever by a WR. Think that migh have helped?

NB is a great LB. But we already have the best LB in the world and a decent back-up in Grant. The gains for this team next year and the next 5 years with this move alone would be multi-Super Bowl victories.

LF is also one of the best teammates, something that was not always said of MC. And he would give AS stability and confidence immediately in the WR’s.

In my eyes, it is an easy trade if AZ bit.

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

LF is going to be 29 by the time the next season starts. Baring injury he will be at his peak for two more years, max. Bowman is just getting started and is likely to improve further. There’s no telling how good he’ll end up being.

Not to mention the 49ers could sign Bowe for just money, while keeping the picks. Keep in mind, first round picks have become more valuable with the new rookie salary structure.

So, as much as I would love to have LF on the 49ers, I still wouldn’t make that trade.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ex

JR was very good into his mid-thirties. And he played in a tougher era where DB’s could really hit him.

LF is bigger than JR, and lives in an era where PI is called for breathing on a guy wrong.

LF has been strong and I don’t believe has suffered any major injury. JR was the ageless one who only slowed down after his knee injury. Even then he helped the Raiders into the Super Bowl.

LF easily has another 4-6 years of top flight play. With our D (minus NB even), that can easily be a 3-peat. Plus NB was a 3rd round pick, and with great coaching it is not unthinkable to get a player nearly as good as him more coached up more quickly than it is to get somebody as good as LF is now up to that level. That could take several years.

Several years with LF, and we have at least 1 Super Bowl win. I just can’t see that certainty with NB. Of course I would love a tradee of MC instead of NB, but I don’t see that at all.

Keep in mnd that JS is getting older, so our D won’t be this great in another 3-5 years. Strike now while we are so close.

  30. Big niner says:

Fitzgerald? Really …, why would AZ trade him especially in the division? I would look at trading bowman but for a high pick since he’s an all pro. Eventually you can’t afford 3 expensive lb’s so maybe we can get something for the young stud he is.
I still think we need to get something for gore, now!

    • DS94everXev says:

I didn’t say AZ would go for it.

But if you want to talk about big trade dreams, then dream about the best.

LF is better than any draft pick will get you. So, that is why I went that route. LF is a proven WR in the NFL. Nobody coming into the league is. And LF makes every freaking catch and can do anything and everything. He is truly great. And I would love to see AS have him.

Would a 4th do you for FG?

    • bryantyoung97 says:

      DS, Big niner,

Baalke, Harbaugh, believe in the team thats been built here…these types of trades will not happen…Baalke will continue to resign who he can afford, continue to make tiny dents in free agency, build and complement through the draft…I believe in what they are doin, they got to the Title game this year and very well could have made the SuperBowl with this approach…they need to get better in certain areas but they should continue to do what they are doing, not totally make sudden moves like the Jets, Eagles, redskins do…continue to be methodical with the roster and add legitimate competition to eac position group

      • DS94everXev says:

        @bryant

The Niner FO and JH will not ever blame anybody. But, you must know that they are going to do something to change up the WR position. And why not go after the best WR.

I don’t think the Niners need to go all Eagle Crazy in FA or trade wise. An all world WR like LF though with VD and FG/KH (not counting anybody else they could draft) would be awesome.

Of course AZ won’t do it. Unless we get pictures of the GM having a late night visit from the hot waitress at the restaurant he ate at earlier one evening. I am not below going that route to get LF.

      • NickRow says:

        @bryantyoung97
Be careful or else Dana Stubblefield (a.k.a DS94everXev) might get mad at you.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @nick

Not a bad idea of where I got my name.

        But you’re wrong.

      • bryantyoung97 says:

lol you guys kill me…I love the drive for the team though!!I am from NY, love the niners, read you guys blog it up and I thought I might as well join and talk a bit…you all have good points…By the way imagine Justin Smith and bryant young on the same line??

      • exgolfer says:

I much prefer the option of signing Bowe as a FA, keeping the draft picks and Bowman. That way the 49ers get a premium WR [not as good a LF, but still a true No. 1 WR], keep perhaps the best pair of ILB to ever play in NFL together, and add talent with draft picks, instead of trading them away.

      • DS94everXev says:

Bowe has not proven himself at this level (playoffs) like LF has. And we need a big time big game WR. No sense getting a guy who doesn’t show upin the tough games.

I like NB a lot. But in todays NFL an all world WR is more productive than an all world MLB to winning SuperBowls. Can you name me any starting MLB for the Giants or Pats? How about WR’s? See my point?

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

Don’t underestimate the importance of those ILB’s in the 49ers’ defense. Larry Grant is not yet proven.

I remember Jack Lambert, Mike Singletary, Ken Norton Jr., right off the top of my head. I’m sure there are other ILB’s who played a key role on SB winning teams.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @exgolfer

Remember when the Niners collapsed in the late 90′s after SY was injured.

        Their best 3 defenders were:

        BY
        Norton Jr.
        Tim McDonald

All 3 great players. But the NFL had become an outside the lines game, and the Niners were only good in between the lines.

I am not counting the MLB as insignificant or discounting them. But the LB core of both Super Bowl reams is crap next to ours. Heck, they don’t have 1 LB between them who is better than our back-up!

But their WR core? Not 1 Niner WR would see more than a few snaps on either team. That means something. They are deep in a position we are not. And they are in the Super Bowl. This despite us having the best 1, 2 LB’s playing today. I conclude a great WR core is therefore more important than a great LB core in todays NFL. And getting the best of them all, and the only guy who has a chance at breaking JR’s TD record would be a killer start to upgrading our WR position.

  31. Big niner says:

This front office will do what’s best for the team. Last year they strengthened the secondary. This year they’ll strengthen our receiver corps. It wouldn’t surprise me if they go after another mauling lineman, maybe one from Stanford.
Crabtree might be a cancer to the team now, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him traded in the off season.

  32. MidWestNiner says:

    Resign him.

  33. Big niner says:

    Ds,
If we all we got was a 4th, then I would decline. Gore can compliment a team that is one running back away from winning, like new England, the colts depending on Peyton, greenbay, and any other team looking for the “it” to push them over. His best ability might be in pass protection, so think of passing teams. We need to get something for him and suggested it here first 6 months before he hurt his hip.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Big niner

I would like to see FG be like BY.

Play his whole career here. Never leave. Retire a Niner.

      • bryantyoung97 says:

DS, thats the ticket…Gore is a niner

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

Emotionally, I agree with you. Pragmatically, not so much. The NFL is a cold business. If Montana, Lott, Craig, Rice and others couldn’t retire 49ers, why shouldn’t the 49ers trade Gore? If the 49ers can get something of value for him, they should. It’s too bad, but true.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ex

The only one they traded was JM. All others were just let go.

I don’t see anybody giving up a 1, 2 for FG. I mean how many RB’s were even drafted in the 1st round last year? sowhy would anybody give a high draft pick for an aging RB with injuries?

You won’t get anything in return (5h round pick), plus youlose a true supporter of AS and Niner leader for a 5th round pick?

Nah. Rather not lose him ever.

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

If you notice, I wrote, “if the 49ers can get something of value for him, they should.” I never said they should give him away. Also, the first thing I wrote was that I too would like him to stay. It’s just that reality might end up being different.

  34. Danny S. says:

The most overlooked receiver in this years draft will be Jordan White from Western Michigan. Projected in about the 5th or 6th round. He is 6′ 0″” 215 and has great hands. Had 140 receptions for 1911 yards and 17 TD’s this season at W. Mich. Granted he played in the MAC, but I seen him on a few occasions and nobody could cover this guy. He is a beast with great hands. Something for the team to consider in later rounds for a steal.

  35. Chicago49er says:

What a true team player and a professional in this day and age!!! We should do our best to resign Carlos Rogers. He is willing to work with the Team so why not work something out to give him four years with incentives on the third and the forth year. We can never have enough corner backs. Also T BROWN must be locked sinc he has been playing the best football of his career. GO NINERS

  36. MontanaMan16 says:

Can you believe they actually asked JH this question today? Pretty much the last question of the interview as you can imagine!

How’d you spend your time after the game? What did you do last night?
“Is it just California that everybody just wants to know how you feel? Care about what you thought, what you did, how you felt, how your pinky feels. Is that just a California thing? Back where I come from, nobody really cares. In my opinion, it is a California thing.”
    Kinda funny! Love Harbaugh

  37. 49er42 says:

Some of the comments are a bit off. Rogers is starting in the Probowl is ok,but thats about it! Probowl corners are hard to find and one who shows this leadership is rare.
This isn’t Madden video, signing Carlos is a no brainer
By the way trading Haley worked out well, didn’t it. As Aikman says no Haley,no Super bowls.

  38. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

With an offseason of work the team will be better offensively. Let’s see what Baalke comes up with. If he is as good as everybody thinks and comes up with a draft anywhere near last years it could be a great upcoming year.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

That’s what I’m thinkin’, Andrew. All the talk on here will be interesting, but frankly, I’ve never felt more comfortable about an off season, with Harbaugh, Baalke & Co. making the decisions. Sure can’t complain about how they set us up this year…especially versus the last 7 or 8 years!

    • exgolfer says:

If the upcoming draft and FA period are as good as last year’s and Smith can continue to improve, the 49ers will have as good of a chance as any team to win the SB.

  39. fesnyc says:

i’d love to see Carlos Rogers come back.

I’ve watched the niners during eras when they didnt have corners who can cover and make plays, and its not pretty. when you have a weakness at corners – just one weakness at corner, not even two – you watch that weakness all…day…long.

  40. LA-LA Land says:

Not crazy about big trades for draft picks. Prefer we utilize our re-energized scouting system and trade downward for more picks. No guarantee on WR high picks working. There always some UFA diamonds ou there, we just have to find them (Austin, Cruz, Baldwin).

Will Morgan be the same after injury? And we need the old prototype Niner WR…big and fast. We don’t any more smallies.

Still like Cory Nelms as future CB. Mark my words, kid has talent.

    In Trent We Trust…

  41. Jeff K. says:

To the greatest degree possible, I think you try to keep this team intact. There will be some losses (Rachal comes to mind), but I hope they retain most of the others mentioned above. I hope the 9ers have as good of a draft class this year as last!

Although I was disappointed last night too, let’s not take it out on Kyle Williams. This is a team game and there were many mistakes made in that game – win as a team…lose as a team.

  42. Razoreater says:

I’m still hurting and am not able to discuss future plans at this time.

    • Neal says:

I was like that in the 80′s and 90′s when were really good not anymore, it stings for a few hours and then I am good.

    • exgolfer says:

I was hurting, too, but talking about next year is helping me through it. Super Bowl? What Super Bowl? They’re not playing it this year.
