After his knockout hit on Pierre Thomas last Saturday Donte Whitner is famous around the country for his viciousness, but around the 49ers practice facility he’s known for his politeness and mild manner. It’s as if he’s two different people – on-the-field Donte and off-the-field Donte. I sat down with Whitner at his locker this afternoon and asked him to describe his two different identities. Hey Mr. Whitner, try listening to “Balls To The Walls” by Accept if thats how you feel. Thanks for a great team effort. Protect you fortress. I love feel good stories like these. Great FA pickup Mr. Baalke.
Wow. That got me fired up. Nice article.
It’s commendable that a person so young can have such a balance in life. I remember Hall of Famer Ray Nitschke saying if he didn’t have football in his life he would have ended up in prison. So, being able to change gears is quite an accomplishment.
“I’m gonna knock you out. Momma said knock you out.”
Vicious is kind of a strong word. Looked to me that he was watching the ball when he put his head down den Whoops dere it is.
what i’m saying is it was a clean hit IMHO.
He almost cost us a game against Saint because of his soft missed tackle.
If your alluding to the missed tackle against Graham for their final touchdown, I beg to differ. If he makes that tackle chances are we do not get time to answer.
@Razor, you’re probably right but it was still a bad play by Whitner. In that spot, you can’t go for the ball. The Safety must make the tackle late in the game with the lead. He gave up a TD and he prevented a TD so we’ll call it even.
Great article Grant,
You know Whitner kind of reminds me of Ronnie Lott in Terms of his mannerism On & Off the Field. Ronnie was very soft spoken off the Field but a Complete Menace on the Field.
And may the Hits keep on coming on Sunday!
I would day our secondary is the best of the remaining four teams in the playoffs when you look at experience, physicality, and speed. If Dashon and Whitner play the ball more selectively rather than the knock out shot, this game is over early. Were gonna stop the run, then we need to knock around Manning, and then its on to Indy!
Guess Whitner is reinacting that car accident everytime he steps on the field….except he is the car, and nothing is accidental!
Cannot wait until Sunday!!!
