Look for a huge game from Frank Gore (Lowell column)

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat just posted my dad’s prediction column for the Niners-Giants NFC championship game. We agree that the Niners will win, but we disagree on the score. He says they’ll win by one touchdown (27-20). I say they’ll win by two (31-17). To read his reasoning, click here.

Nice article. I believe Mr. Hunter will wack, stack and pack his share as well. Proven to be an excellent receiver as well. I’m also interested in ICE vs. BAAS. I don’t think he played week 10 did he?

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking, Razor. If Frank can get a lot of yards from the Giants’ double teaming Vernon, then when Hunter’s in, he should also benefit. And the different styles of the two guys should keep the G-men on their toes…or on their butts!
      Go Niners!

  2. jkla says:

i believe mcdonald messed up his hammy the last game. THis will also be a factor of note. mcdonald not 100 percent. This and the soggy turf means slowed pass rush which means huge games from bowman and willis either in coverage or blitzing.

  3. MarkW says:

Good read, and yes, the Giants will make sure Davis does not beat them. So Frank Gore is probably a big factor in this game. But also, I think Smith has found some wheels. I would not be surprised to see him channeling Timmy T occasionally. especially with a wet field. No ball handling, no turnovers. . .

We will still need receivers, and I don’t see how Walker could really be back to playing condition. And Crabtree is indeed a high maintenance pain in the ass. Who is left? Williams? Swain, from out of nowhere? Or we just run 40 times? This part has me baffled. But maybe the Giants are baffled too.
    GO 9ers!

  4. Drty 49 says:

I believe, with the prospect of having sloppy ground, that Hunter will be more of a factor, better at catching, faster, and works more on the outside, where Gore is more up the middle, but either way if they shut down our passing game, look for a big running game, I believe our D will do what it DO, and crush someone.

  5. 4th and 1 says:

what a rotten, lousy, sloppy place to play a football game. Woo-Hoo!

  6. Prime Time says:

I like the prediction Lowell but the chances of the exact same score as week 10? Cmon man!

  7. Drty 49 says:

For those of u, who dont know already, Boldon who plays for Raves, broke his jaw while playing for AZ, and came back the next week, D love should be back and be a factor.keep the faith,9ers4life

  8. MarkW says:

    Sorry, just one more thought:

Y’all remember what we were worried about last year at this time??

Wow. What a difference a year makes!

  9. Drty 49 says:

Who knew that the last time we beat NYG our D was rated 9th, , who is the different team now?

    • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

Also played most of our NFCW games (vs. mostly inept offenses) after that game. The Niners last 3 Reg Season games at home they allowed only 10 points. Saints were relatively inept, with the exception of those two big plays, which jacked Brees & Saints from 350yds/18 pts to 460/32. Lots of punters talking BS, but Niners D is a weapon. Giants will be humiliated. Niners cruise.

  10. Big niner says:

I’m looking forward to yac, short patterns to get the ball out quick. A lot of flat plays to the rb, fb and wr screens. Also look for off tackle runs and counters. An occasional draw play might also slow that pass rush down. Line Vd up in the backfield and have him go in motion. Confuse the heck out if their weak LB crew. I can see a screen play ran out if that formation to VD.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

On a nasty field, a quick slant could be hell for the Giants’ D to deal with; one quick juke, and bye-bye! Like your idea for the screen to VD too, Big.

  11. Drty 49 says:

Giants receivers will hear footsteps tomorrow, look for some drops, and fumbles

  12. Neal says:

Crabtree has really improved this year and although he dropped some passes, after VD performance he will want to to have a big game, because after that it really get scary on where Smith throws it too, these guys from the practice squad are not very good. i am not so sure about the Gore theory but hope you are right.

  13. Stan says:

Not possible for Frank to have a huge game-good maybe. For the umpteenth time, the news showed Franks big run vs the Saints…and for the umpteenth time I’ve noticed he was run down from behind…something you NEVER saw before when Frank broke free. Watch it. Not the same breakaway ability.

  14. Drty 49 says:

I am looking for KW to benefit as well.

  15. f49er says:

Interesting Concept about the Giants using an extra defender to Double Vernon thus leaving 1 less in the Box for Gore to gash them.

But to say that Crabtree will NOT be 1 of the 49ers Offensive Factors would be wrong. Tree knows he had a Bad Game last week, you don’t think he’ll be ready to redeem himself?

Trust me….. he will have a Big Game tomorrow regardless of supposedly the Giants best CB Corey Webster on Tree.

  16. Montana Joe says:

We’re the most under-rated fans base in NFL! Let us this as motivation to make some noise tomorrow faithful!

  17. M2 says:

The prediction is appropriate to need because if the Giants lock down Davis Gore, and perhaps Walker, are the only options. I don’t trust any of the WR’s. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that Gore has enough left to provide the needed contribution. He averaged only 3.6 yards per carry for the last half of the season – and, if you discount his one break-out 44 yard carry last week … he once again averaged 3.6 yards per carry. Actually, when you stop and analyze the tools Alex Smith has had to work with ( a decling run game and unproductive WR’s) I have to conclude that he must be pretty good! I hope we get him some help next season.

  18. niner61 says:

Would love to see FG be ‘the man’ in a win tomorrow since Alex and Vernon got their glory last week even though he had a very solid overall game. It’d be so fitting for him to do it in the NFC championship game after busting his tail on a series of bad offenses the previous 6 years. Let’s extend this season for another 2 weeks. Go Frank!!! Go Niners!!!!!!

  19. Freddie P. Soft says:

all the hype they’re giving the niners makes me nervous. Settle down writers. We like when all that is wriiten is written against us.

  20. Hoferfan67 says:

FG doesn’t seem like he’s hitting the hole with quickness like he use to or like he did for 5 games in the middle of the season. I’m hoping he still has something left in the tank because the 9ers need a good game from him tomorrow. Let’s hope some of his production issues are fatigue and not hip issues. FG is a mudder and he’ll do what it takes to get the job done even if it is all heart to get him over 100 yards tomorrow.

I’m anxious, nervous, and edgy. Go 9ers!!!!!!!!!!

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Me too Hofer, getting very antsy watching the clock. I am amazed how low Frank can get hitting the line of scrimmage. It seems he’s less than 3 feet from the ground. He’s all heart.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Andrew, what time is the game tomorrow for you? 5:30 am? We are so close I just want this to happen.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

      5am, This is it!

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

The Raven-Patriot game is on at 1:30am so I’ll scout that game and root for the Patriots. I like the Ravens, but a 49er-Raven match-up is a similar vibe as the LSU-Alabama game. There’s nothing I would prefer more than the Niners beating Belichek and Brady. Where will you see the game?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Local SF Bay Area. Not going to the game as I get too irritable. I like to watch it at home with my Plasma TV and all the food and drink I would ever want. lol

  21. Razoreater says:

Sleeping like a baby tonight. Waking up every hour crying…

  22. Bill Batten says:

I’m still bitter about ’90, when Marshall blind-sided Montana and broke his throwing hand on purpose while taking him down. What a dirty, rotten player. I want revenge for that game tomorrow. I want the Niners to just rock them. I want the Niners to embarrass them. I want the Niners D to knock the hell out of Manning, beat him up and give him happy feet before they’re done. I want to see the Giants sitting on the bench in the fourth quarter looking like they can’t wait for the final gun so they can slink back to the airport and get the hell out of town.

    • KezarMike says:

Bill, you is speaking the truth!

I’ll also differ with Lowell slightly in that I’m not so sure Crabtree can be counted out. Never can tell which player will step up big time. Crabtree has the talent and he HAS done it at times in the past. Who knows? Last week Alex (as I suspected he would) had a “Montana game.” Could Crabs THIS week have a “Jerry game”? Because pretty soon, we may very well just be labelling great games “Alex games” and “Crabs game.”

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

You paint a very sweet picture, Bill.

  23. Woody says:

Maybe MC having a bad game without losing last week was a good thing. You know he’ll be focused and looking for redemption this week!

  24. fesnyc says:

not only is the senior mr cohn spot on when he writes that the niners have more top level players, our guys are also younger. the key to winning in the nfl is big/fast/strong and young. young means fewer injuries (note the number of niner opponents knocked out of games this year) and fresher legs.

    this is our time.

    • rebelscum74 says:

I sure hope so, The Giants had to spend two extra hours on the plane, hope they all spread the flu around, but don’t want anyone to have a Michael Jordan Game! Enough people are picking the Giants, hope the Ninners can just perform and Alex can have a great game!

  25. JTree says:

I read your blog all the time and of course enjoy it and all the comments just as much but thought that I had to share that last nite I woke up with an unsettled stomach, why? bc I jus had a nightmare the 9ers lost! I now know that we WILL WIN today, dreams are always “bass ackwards” right? GO 9ERS! IT IS OUR DESTINY….
