Putting the excellence of Jim Harbaugh in perspective (Lowell column)

For my dad’s Friday column he asked this hypothetical question: What would have happened to the Oakland Raiders this season if Jim Harbaugh, not Hue Jackson, had been the head coach?

I’m linking this because it’s good and because it puts what Harbaugh has done with the Niners into perspective. Most NFL franchises would be lucky to land a coach of Harbaugh’s caliber, and the Niners are blessed in a sense to have such strong leadership.

        “.ya have any teenager sister ya want to hook me up”

        This would make you a pedophile and just plain creepy. You’re making Saints fan look pretty bad right about now.

      • Adam says:

        You mean the “Hihihihihihii” thing isn’t creepy enough?

        This weird dude is wrong every time he’s posted here in the last several months.

        If he’s against us, it’s a good omen and we’re gonna win! :)

      • darrel says:

        and you gave up all those picks for over the hill Palmer.

  3. msclemons67 says:

    Wow. Lowell was a bit harsh on Hue Jackson. I’m not saying Hue didn’t deserve it but wow.

    Interesting to juxtapose Lowell’s article with Mike Silver’s article today about the same coach. Silver is an unabashed Jackson fan while Lowell doesn’t seem to have a lot of love for Hue.

    As always – Lowell does an excellent job of writing with a bit of a bite in it. He’s always been at his best when he’s on the attack ;)

  4. 4th and 1 says:

    Jim Harbaugh in Silver and Black? It just doesn’t seem right. But I like Hugh Jackson. He’ll get picked up by another team.

  5. 4th and 1 says:

    Jim Harbaugh with an eye patch? Naaaah.

  6. oneniner says:

    …Hue Jackson kinda similar to Mike Singletary

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oneniner

      “…Hue Jackson kinda similar to Mike Singletary”

      Knowledge wise = No

      How they lost the locker room and blew up = Yes

      • !all says:

        All bay area sport teams are mediocre.

      • Who dat from Mandeville says:

        Hey DS,
        Was that you visiting the NOLA blogs? Game Day almost here! Saints getting acclimated to the track today. You should go get a preview of the #1 Offense in the league!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @who

        No. I don’t even know what NOLA is. Besides it is not my style for me to change names.

        I will see the #1 offense come onto the field. I have seen them this year. Like last week when you played and we didn’t. lol

        But the #1 defense will be there to greet them. And a very efficient/smart offense will outscore the #1 offense.

        Can’t wait!

    • Who dat from Mandeville says:

      DS 94,
      Let’s Keep the facts straight! You are not the #1 Total Defense (Maybe #2). And you are so abusive! And, you’re making a big mistake comparing them to last year. We have many more weapons this year than that game last year! Keep overlooking us and whining about your lack of respect.
      Can’t wait till tomorrow myself. And you will hear from me win or not. You won’t see me dissappear!
      I hear the track at the “stick” is not that bad this weekend.

      • Adam says:

        Lombardi just picked the Niners to win. :)

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Who

        Look at a whole bunch of different categories, and the Niners are #1. Including Takeaways, which you yourself said was going to be a big deal in the game. If you go by yards, we are not #1. But no game has ever been won based on yardage gained by the offense.
        Yes. You got some weapons. But we had the biggest upgrade by far. Our HC.

        There was 1 game last year when the Niners took their opening drive to score a TD. Then the offense went to sleep. Our HC Mike Singletary (yes that Chicago Bear one) replied to the post game question “What happened after the opening drive to your offense. You guys kinda disappeared.” with something along the lines of “Well, we had the lead, so we just wanted to sit on it.” Mind you, there was still some 50+ minutes left in the game. And his plan was to win the game based upon that opening TD drive. And yes. That is the same HC who almost beat you last year as well.

        And yet, that team with that HC somehow managed to win 6 games! They shouldn’t have won any. But the talent here is quite good. And last years Niner team was not as good as this years. The Niners had the best draft/FA period in the NFL this past year. And we picked up some players who will be All Pro for a very long time.

        “And you are so abusive!”

        What did I say that was so abusive? Dude. You are on a Niner blog. What do you think is going to happen?

        And for reference sake…one blogger on here told another (fellow Niner fan) some hideous thing which involved (1) his mother (2) being born (2) dying or never have lived. Put all that stuff together in the cruelest way possible and that is what was written. This was in response to “Hey, lets be happy we are 13-3.”

        So, if you think I wrote something abusive to you. in my reply above…you are in trouble here my friend. It might be best if you go away from here outcome of the game be damned.

      • Who dat from Mandeville says:

        Fair enough, I’m gone.
        However, whatever the outcome, I’ll be back on Monday to either compliment your success, or expect some compliments from you guys if the Saints move on.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @who dat

        I’ll be here.

        And, if the Giants lose, I will cheer for any team against GB. Here in Niner land, it has has been 7 years of “What if AR were here instead of AS?” Guess how tiresome that argument gets after 7 years?

  7. Fan says:

    I wish Aubrayo Franklin the best ! He was the 49ers franchise player. The Saints should be happy to get him. He can eat up space and demand a double team. He can anchor the line and stop the run. He has a quick pass rush with dominant strength This will allow Vilma to roam and cause havoc. The front seven is playing at a high level. Roman Harper is playing for sure, he wouldn’t miss this, neither would Lance Moore. Jimmy Graham and D. Sproles are versatile players so Willis and Bowman will have their hands full. The Saints fullback can put up points too but the three headed monster run game is going to present another challenge for the 49ers run defense. Hopefully there are no skittles.. Maybe starburst, lol. The interior o-line is powerful and can protect Brees which allows him to deliver the ball accurately in a timely fashion. The WR’s are dynamic off the line of scrimmage and are making the offense explode on the secondary. The TE are deep and can block and catch. They play key roles in the running and passing game. Hopefully there are some turnovers. The Saints didn’t turn the ball over last year on MNF where 49ers turned it over 4 times. However, the 49ers are securing the rock more this year. The Saints-Lions film showed some interesting things. Special teams will play a huge role in this game. I can see the Saints punter placing the 49ers in bad field position. John Kasay is playing at a Pro Bowl level and can easily win the game at the end of the game or in OT. There is no stopping the Saints offense. Can the 49ers even slow them down? I can’t wait to watch.

    Geax 49ERS!!!

    • NinersRoc says:

      I don’t wish Franklin the best…I hope he has the WORST game of his career! I hope Jonathan Goodwin has him vertical all day. I know you’re just trying display good sportsmanship, but to hell with that right now! We can show them good sportsmanship right after coach gives Peyton his trademarked MAN-SHAKE!

      GO NINERS!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninersroc

        I was pissed at AF last year. He held out for a long term contract, then played poorly. The previous year he was great. And PW was all over the field and the run D was really good.

        Then last year, he didn’t do it again. That showed me he just wanted lots of money. AF last year got pushed around a lot, unlike the previous season he was the rock of Gibraltar in there.

        Issac has more than replaced him. And, he seems to have really bought into JH and staff philosophy. AF, even in his one good season…I just never felt he really bought into the system.

      • NinersRoc says:

        @DS

        I agree 100%! AF just wanted the money. The funny thing is, he’s in NO and he STILL didn’t get the money that he wanted AND he’s not playing up to the level that he did that one year. Well he can watch us from NOLA lay the wood in the NFC Championship game! LOL!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninersroc

        I hope AF goes up against Iupati a lot.

        Can’t wait. : )

      • BigP says:

        You can play for the money one year, but it’s hard to do in consecutive years if that is what your playing for. You have to really love the game. It will be interesting to see how the team values our free agents this offseason and which ones they want to keep around long term.

      • Dad Gum says:

        Big P, that may be the only time we get any idea what coach really thinks about his mighty men.

  8. Razoreater says:

    Thats it then…we have no chance in hell! That is indeed the potrait being painted here. And maybe thats the angle the Head Coach is imploying to his men. David versus Goliath. Tebow versus successful quarterback.

  9. Razoreater says:

    What the media and analysts do not want to give, we will have to take. Go Forty Niners, TAKE EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Adam says:

    Just listening to ESPN radio on the way to work.

    Lombardi picks the Niners to win. Niners give up an average of 11 points at home, he feels the front 7 will not allow the Saints’ offense to do much. They’ll put too much pressure on Brees and the linebackers and secondary will close off any windows of opportunities. Brees is short and won’t be able to see down field.

    He sees Harbaugh giving Smith a ton of options on 3rd downs and it should look better. He figures the Niners offense will win the time of possession and keep the ball away from Brees and the Saints.

    I like it.

    I’m jacked! Let’s go!

    • 49erGirl says:

      Well, if you want to change your screen name to “jacked” that’s cool, but it will take the rest of us a while to get used to calling you something other than “Adam”. :-)

      One of the Mikes (of Mike and Mike) picked them too. Just not sure which one was speaking at the time…I don’t listen to them very often so I’m not sure which one is which.

    • Who dat from Mandeville says:

      Yea, Lombardi is someone I put alot of faith in.

      • Adam says:

        Probably should. Couple of decades in the league in the front office, several years as an analyst.

        He’ll forget more about football than you or I will ever know.

      • Who dat from Mandeville says:

        Yea, and Coach Lombardi’s grandson is our QB coach. Quess who he thinks will win? And I would say he’s forgotten more about football than you or I will ever know!

      • 49erGirl says:

        So Michael Lombardi is coming out on national TV and picking against his own family?

        THAT should tell you something!!

      • 49erGirl says:

        Dang it – hate it when I post without fact checking first!!

        What I meant to say was “He went on national TV and picked against his friend’s kid?” LOL!

      • Adam says:

        “Yea, and Coach Lombardi’s grandson is our QB coach. Quess who he thinks will win?”

        Seems like a silly argument.

        Our two former HOF QBs say we’re going win. Nah nah nah nah. :P

        Whatever. It should be a good game. :)

      • Adam says:

        “Dang it – hate it when I post without fact checking first!!”

        There’s no known family relationship but, as I found out doing a ton of family history stuff on ancestry.com, if you go back far enough (I can get mine back to about the 1630s in America), just about everyone that shares your surname is related somewhere along the tree.

        Wouldn’t surprise me if he actually is related to the coach. Some sort of distant cousin. Which actually would be weird when you consider that two Lombardi’s (who are supposedly not related) were both associated with the NFL.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

        Supposedly a cousin of mine coached Peyton Manning in High School.

    • ME says:

      Didn’t Lombardi also say that He didn’t think Harbaugh would choose SF to coach this year?

  11. 49erGirl says:

    28 hours and 50 minutes….

    C’mon clock – move faster!!!!!

  12. Stan says:

    I wonder what your dad thinks of a phone call to a sports station that maybe explains Harbaughs “few friends”. Harbaugh isnt liked by many of his fellow players of the time because Harbaugh crossed the picket line during one hard fought strike. It sort of flys in the face of Jim’s blue collar shirt giveaway..my union family sacrificed hard NEVER crossing ANY picket line.
    But,he sure can coach!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Stan

      Football players, while they are playing (after they stop it s a very different story) have lots of money.

      This is not the teachers union or some factory union.

      The difference is significant enough to make the two situations unrelateable.

      • Stan says:

        I got you-Montana crossed also. BUT thats not the point-its what made a non superstar like Jim unliked by teammates. Its a possible explanation that sounds plausible to me.

      • 49erGirl says:

        I thought Sean Payton was the scrub QB’ing for the Bears during the strike.

        Maybe you could direct your picket line crossing anger towards the coach on the other side of the field :-)

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan

        People say you’re a Raider fan. And you bring up JH not being liked by his teammates. And, I don’t remember JM playing in any strike games.

        Rich Gannon anyone?

        What made JH really unliked by teammates was the fact that he was playing poorly. For a HC who really was not that good (Ditka). Then he went to another team with a decent HC, and was nicknamed “Captain Comeback” lovingly because he won.

      • Stan says:

        Not angry-just posting something interesting about the man..and it conflicts with the image he wants to put out.
        Oh,I know-they are ALL wealthy and for themselves.
        Hey-Ronny Lott’s speach to the Saints last year..THAT was being for the other side!

      • 49erGirl says:

        I don’t think you’ll find Ronnie Lott anywhere near the Saints locker room this weekend! Did you hear him on M&M this morning? He’s totally hyped up for this game!

        I love how the ex-Niners like Lott, Young, Clark, etc. keep saying “we” when talking about this team. “All we need to do to win is…”.

        I think the past players’ relationships with the organization have been much improved since Jed took over the team and we won’t hear any more reports of our ex-greats being in the opposing teams’ locker room before a game with the Niners.

      • Stan says:

        I’m a bay area fan. You cant tell me even Grant doesnt want the Raiders to win..when he grew up in Oakland.
        If your a pick one only type-sorry.

      • NinersRoc says:

        @49ergirl

        You’re correct! It was Sean Payton who played during the strike.

        @Stan, I’m not sure JH’s teammates didn’t like him. I think his lack of having many friends is just the way JH rolls. He likes to keep everything close to his vest and his only passions in life seem to be family and football (and maybe competition in general). I don’t see how any football player (or athlete for that matter) can’t have a serious “man-crush” on coach.

      • Adam says:

        “I thought Sean Payton was the scrub QB’ing for the Bears during the strike.”

        He was. In ’87 they called them the “Spare Bears.”

        A bunch of those guys crossed the line toward the end of the strike. If I remember right, the same thing happened in ’82.

        I’ve always heard good things about Harbaugh. Waddle, Faulk, anyone that played with him that has said anything on the record seem to like him just fine.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan

        “I’m a bay area fan.”

        I’m not.

  13. Stan says:

    Also-NO DOUBT Radnich and Kreuger had words over yesterdays show where Kreuger advocated HURTING Brees. “Just not after the whistle”. Today,not a mention of that juvenile (I’m being nice) thinking.
    And Radnich seems irked if your watching todays show. For once-I agree with Raddy.
    Krueger already had a talking too a few weeks ago about doing his bet making as the show was on the air-you could see him yellowline the teams,Now advocating dirty play to win-and he himself said HE MEANT IT..wasnt joking. Ok-I believe you Larry. You are demented. AND-what was wrong with Lowell again you said?

  14. 55niner says:

    Grant,
    I read your Dad’s column in the PD this morning, and must say that the premise of JH making the Faiders a formidable football team makes for a good read, I think Lowell missed an important point. The point being Jim Harbaugh won’t be a stooge for anybody, and, except for Jon Gruden, Al Davis made a point of hiring ‘yes man’ stooges to be head coaches. We all saw HJ at the pressers…rather than referring to AD as Mr. Davis or Al, he affectionately called him ‘coach’…. what a kiss ass! Jim Harbaugh teaches and expects discipline, something Al Davis didn’t find necessary as can be seen by the number of times his team led the NFL in penalties. News Flash Faider fans, comminting tons of penalties, especially PF penalties, doesn’t translate to intimidation, it means that your team is undisciplined and doesn’t play smart football. Personally, I’d love to see the Faiders move back to L.A., but in the mean time, I hope for the sake of their fans that Reggie McKenzie will hire a real head coach, and let that coach run the X’s and O’s the way he should.

    • Brotha tuna says:

      Good points. That Oakland HC job actually probably looks more attractive to more people now that the Puppet Master won’t be second-guessing and micro-managing. A coach might be able to coach.
      I always thought that the Dallas job wouldn’t attract as many candidates because of Jerry J. keeping his fingers in things.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @brotha

        Gotta disagree on both accounts.

        The Raiders have no secondary at all, and not drat picks to solve that problem.

        The Raiders have nobody on the DL to stop the run. The entire Raider D needs to be beheaded. Coaches and all. They all stink.

        And you have a penalty problem that transcends HC’s. Their whole attitude encourages such things, so how do you get rid of something which you encourage?

        And who is the QB? Palmer was anointed for doing nothing but sit on his bum. The guy he replaced actually had a a winning record, and he is gone. No way he wants to hang around sitting as the #2. The Raiders have a nice WR core and RB’s but that is it.

        Sure they can get somebody. Only 32 people in the world are NFL HC’s.

        Dallas will always be attractive. America’s team thing. And they are more well rounded than the Raiders are. Plus Jones is not threatening to move the team to LA at the first big press conference since his dad died.

      • Brotha tuna says:

        @DS
        Well, as to Dallas, do you think Cowher or Fisher would take the Dallas job with JJ? Imo, not.
        Right now, so I hear from ESPN & PFW gossip sources, is that the point Fisher is negotiating (w/ St.L/Mia) is power structure within an organization, not salary. I think its important to most coaches, but not all candidates have enough leverage to get their way.
        Did Raiders trade away their future? Yes. Is their roster a shambles? Yes. I still maintain that the HC job is more attractive now than when Al was pulling the strings.
        Penalties correctable? Absolutely, of course it is. But one thing has to happen; the new guy will have to fire at least one or two guys, BAM!, noisily to make a point and get their attention. No one’s had that authority there as HC in so long that the locker room is out of control.
        So yours and my views not exactly in sync there, but not all that far apart on some things; but hey, no insults flying either way cuz we’re on the same page about finding a way to win on Saturday! Go Niners!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @brotha

        I am sure both guys you brought up will be hired if they really wanted to come back again.

        But, how many Defensive minded coaches are the top coaches? Bill in NE. Then who?

        Which defensive minded HC has Jerry Jones hired in the past? That previous guy (former Buf HC) had the most talent in Dallas since the Championship years, and stank. I am sure JJ has that on his mind.

        And which great HC has ever retired (referencing Bill Cowher here) for a long time now, and come back to the NFL and continued being a great HC with a great team? The only one I can think of who was great and came back to be ok was Seifert.

        “Penalties correctable? Absolutely, of course it is. ”

        I don’t think so. They have had how many HC’s and how many have said “The first thing we will solve is the penalty issue.” They have all failed to do so. So, this is one of those things that I will need to see to believe.

        And I hear you about Al not being there. But his son just threatened to move the team to LA. Sounds like his father to me.

        You don’t call me names, etc. and we will always be cool with one another no matter our opinion on specifics. We are all Niner fans. lol

        It sure does feel good to be a Niner fan

    • Stan says:

      I wish people who wish the Raiders would move-would move instead-lol. Hue will make-again- a very good OC..HC isnt his calling.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan

        I don’t want the Raiders to move. I want them dis-mantled and sold for scrap. Al Davis let lots of bad things happen (gangs after moving to LA) and said nothing about it because he made money off of it.

        Raiders will ever get the love they had before the move. The Niners got ahold of it and are not letting go. The move to Santa Clara is going to prove that they are not leaving the area.

      • 49erGirl says:

        “Al Davis let lots of bad things happen (gangs after moving to LA) and said nothing about it because he made money off of it.”

        Al Davis did a lot of strange things with his team and some of his decisions were pretty bad. But blaming him for gangs in LA? You can’t be serious. They had gangs long before Al moved to town.

        The LA Kings gear was just as popular with thugs at the time – suppose Wayne Gretzky had a hand in the gangs too.

        That is some seriously twisted thinking.

      • Adam says:

        I’ll watch the Raiders when they’re on. I don’t have the same kinda love for them though.

        I’m a Giants fan over the A’s. I’ll watch the Warriors (they were my team when I was younger – who couldn’t like Rick Barry’s granny free throws!) but I’ve been a bigger Sac Kings fan over the years – the Vlade and Chris Webber days were fun to watch. Doug Christie nailing Rick Fox with a left hook! Yeah! Hate those Lakers!

        Ahem… pulled a Stan there and got sidetracked. Where was I?

        Oh yeah, not much in to hockey so the Sharks I can take it or leave it.

        But… it’s all good for the Bay Area.

      • 55niner says:

        @ Adam,
        I watch them when they’re on too…..but I root for the opposition all the time.

      • Adam says:

        I won’t root against them but I don’t really cheer for them either. Kinda ambivalent I guess.

        Sort of just interesting – like watching a train wreck in slow motion. :P

        But I’ll watch ‘em if I don’t have anything else to do.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @55niner

        I will watch the Raiders as well. They are a local team, and you need to what they are doing to make fun of them.

        But no way will I ever cheer for them. If the Niners need the Raiders to win to get something, then I blame the Niners for not going undefeated or win one of the games they lost.

        Thanks for the great memory Adam – I’m a huge Kings fan (from Sac…kinda have to be) and that knock out punch from Doug Christie was awesome! We may not have a championship, but that front page photo of Rick Fox’s face getting smacked is almost as good, lol!

        I pull for the Raiders – but that’s partially because I have a house full or Raider fans and a good Raider team makes for a happier family (i.e. a less grumpy hubby).

        I used to love hockey and followed it like I follow the NFL now, but it’s hard to stick with it since nobody else in my family is interested. Now I’m just the typical bandwagonner and watch the Sharks once they make the playoffs.

        Been a die hard Giants fan for as long as I remember. My first time going to any professional sporting event was a Giants game at the ‘Stick and featured Chili Davis, Jeffrey Leonard, and Jack Clark. I think it was against the Braves…back when they royally sucked.

        Oakland A’s I can’t stand. Still po’d about the WS in 89. F the Bash Brothers!!

        Warriors I can take or leave -never paid much attention to them.

        At the end of the day I am a No. Cal fan and if any team from our region is in a big/playoff/bowl game, I’m going to root for them. Even the stinkin’ A’s ;-)

      • Adam says:

        “…and that knock out punch from Doug Christie was awesome!”

        Yes indeed! I have that printed out and it’s blown up here on my office wall (that’s how I knew it was a left hook – my memory isn’t that good! :P)

        That’s funny you mention the Giants in the Stick. That was the last time I saw a Giants game. I think I told that story here before – about the sewer line breaking below the upper deck and all the fans below getting a full spray of raw sewage! Nasty! Will Clark, Robby Thompson and Matt Williams looked up after all the screaming started and just shook their heads in disgust. Funny in a schadenfreude (thank god it didn’t happen to me) kinda way! :P

        I still haven’t had a chance to get down to Pac Bell park yet for a game – walked around it out of season. Really nice.

      • 55niner says:

        @ DS94
        I grew up in the North Bay during the time when the Raiders were training in Santa Rosa….constant bombardment of Raider info…..made me sick. If they wanted to leave the Bay Area, I wouldn’t lose a bit of sleep, and might just apply for a job with the moving company to help them out of here.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @55niner

        I lived close enough to that area at one time as well. And, I have a very good feeling on how Raider fans behave.

        I tried to talk football with them, and they say “Let’s fight!” I asked them whey they like the Raiders, they reply “Because they fight! And break rules!” Then they say “JM is a faggot (never got that since his wife Jennifer was an 11 out of 10), and so is your team!”

        That actually happened and it happened a lot with a lot of different Raider fans.

    • Max says:

      Couldn’t agree with you more, 55niner: Lowell’s conceiving that hypothetical was damned clever, and when I saw it, I immediately thought, “Wish I’d thought of this!” Notice how much of the writer’s structural work is done once it is put into play. After that, it’s “only” a matter of going down the list of coaching traits and their implications for a talented team and “filling in the blanks” (this assumes, of course, that one has already mastered the knowledge necessary to fill in those blanks – which, obviously, Lowell has. Brilliant!

      • Stan says:

        Lowell brought something I had posted months ago too,that Hue would go conservative to the best teams..and that always backfired.
        Really,just more of how he caved under pressure.
        Btw-All you “Only 49er” fans-what about college? I watch Cal and Stanford-root for em both. And I never was affiliated with either University. Just knowing I’m smarter then 100.1 % of the students gives me security..hee.

      • 55niner says:

        @ Stan…
        With regard to college football, I’ve been a Stanford fan for as long as I’ve been a 9er fan…..Giants fan too.

      • Max says:

        @55niner: Just to clarify my previous comment – I meant that I agree with you about Lowell’s premise making for a good read. Don’t know enough to comment on your additional remarks, but do have a friend who’s a diehard Raider fan and he feels the same way. :-)

    “This is a game where the better defense will definitely win the game,” New Orleans linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar said.

  17. kmac535 says:

    dunno why you guys try to argue with irrational fans of other teams. The saints and their fans have every reason to be confident, so let them talk, because we also have reason to be confident, but much like our team and it’s coaches, we’ll let the play on the field do the talking. I’m a pretty superstitious guy, I believe in karma on some level, so I’m not the type to be flamboyantly boasting prior or even during a game, after the game, perhaps a subtle ribbing, but I’m not doing any talking until it’s in the bag for fear that the early talk will karmically doom your team, so go ahead, let the aints fans talk it up, they’ve been successful currently for longer than the 9ers, they’re the proven team so they should be confident, congrats to them, but we’ll exude our confidence in the way it should always be exuded, quietly…

    and finally, anyone who puts ihsihsihsihihs or whatever the he!! that was in his posts loses all credibility in my book. Also, any loser who picks the game to be 56-2 with the saints giving up those 2 on purpose has no clue and is an irrational homer that will never see things as they are, only how they want to.

    Go 9ers, expecting a red out at the stick, let’s get loud ppl…but on defense, not offense please…cheer after the successful offensive play, not pre-snap.

    News from the NFL….Jeff Fisher to the St. Louis Rams as new Head Coach….interesting future in the NFC West.

    • 49erGirl says:

      At least the NFC West isn’t the laughing stock of the NFL anymore – or shouldn’t be. The AFC West and NFC East were both worse – I believe the NFC West had a winning record against NFC East teams this year. Funny how the East Coast biased media never pointed that out…

      Fisher’s addition is just one more step into this division slowly becoming one of the best in football.

      Personally, I’d rather have the top team in the best division than the top team in a sucky division!

    Not to totally get off-topic, but thought some of you might find some humor in this:

    My husband comes up to me yesterday after surfing the net a while and with a teasing grin on his face and says, “‘Ode to Niner Girl’ huh…”

    I smiled and said “yeah….you saw that?”

    He replied “yep – you’re enjoying all this attention aren’t you?”

    Me – “who…me??? :-)”

    Him: “That’s what you get when you start hanging out on a site where it’s mostly men. Guess I need to go join something like a scrapbooking site where I’m the only guy and see if I can get some ladies to start flirting with me”

    Me: “Try the screen name ‘Scrapin’Man – should do the trick!”

    For the record – we were both joking around and he took everything in good spirits :-)

    • Adam says:

      I’ve never heard this before:

      “When Singletary sat down with Smith, the conversation was about motivation or religion, and the quarterback felt he went into games underprepared.”

      • BigP says:

        No surprise there, Singletary’s skill set was never X’s and O’s. He was more like the Tony Robbins of the coaching community. I think Singletary thought he was a Jedi or something. I wonder if the players still use “Mount Pain” these days?

      • Stan says:

        You almost feel sorry for him to read that even the Vikings ‘backers have lost respect for him. Thats a big fall for a man who wanted to be the best coach ever. Its a slap of reality about your abilitys that would shake anybodys self esteem.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan
        …”Vikings ‘backers have lost respect for him.”

        Has that actually been confirmed?

    How times change..Monte Poole says Baalke: GM of the year..or at least close.
    Remeber when we scorched Jed for his big lie of world searching for the perfect GM?-LOL…then,he hired the guy down the hall?
    Baalke must have a shrine of Jim in his house..light those candles Trent!-Lord Jim!

    • Stan says:

      Remember-editor!

    • 49erGirl says:

      I wouldn’t say “we” – I thought Baalke was a good hire at the time – got a bunch of cr@p for it though.

      • Stan says:

        Winning is the best spice!

      • TIM says:

        Me too Girl ! Got ripped for supporting Baalke and Jed and VD and Crabs etc. Believe it or not I even took heat for supporting Alex for years,until I finally gave in to the fact that alex was never going to live up to what I had hoped. But with this defense and ST’s and running game,all alex needs to do is what he has been doing, protect the ball and make a few good plays a game. (maybe more than a few against a great team like the Saints ?)

      • 49erGirl says:

        I remember that, Tim! We both got crucified for saying Jed was doing a good job and shouldn’t be compared to his parents :-)

        Alex has made tremendous strides this year and I love how well he’s taken care of the football and not made any killer mistakes. I’ve never been on his bandwagon, but I refuse to say anything negative about him as we roll into the playoffs. He’s got my full support right now as our Niner QB!

      • Stan says:

        BUT..lol..lets not forget that Baalke wanted to let Alex Smith go!..he made that clear in the off season.

        That’s why I dont credit Smith or Baalke or the D..because I know its HARBAUGH. Without him,they revert to mediocre..what they alway had been pre Harbaugh.
        And people misunderstand when I say things about Harbaugh. His personality is one thing..but I have always said he’s THE MAN. Since his Stanford days too.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan

        You’re right about what Baalke said about AS.

        Which means what? That JH had to fight to keep AS around. That does not sound like somebody who was forced to accept AS as the QB, but somebody who would have taken AS had the lockout thing never happened.

      • Stan says:

        No,sounds like a GM stuck with Smith by circumstance..he didnt want him and thats no real debate.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Stan

        Wrong.

        JH was a new HC, who drafted a QB. They could have gone forward with CK. They definitely could have gotten after one of the other vet FA QB’s.

        If what you are saying is true it would require the following 3 things (2 out of 3 will not work):

        1. AS as reported was not coming back here when he cleared out his locker last year. He was done here. JH had to convince AS to stay. If AS ever wanted to leave, this was it. A lot of teams (Indy) were desperate for a QB and AS would have easily been in the top 2 (I think easily the best option) FA QB available. The results of all other FA QB’s speak for themselves.

        2. JH would have not pursued AS. He is a QB guru. He could have tutored Carr, or let CK take control from day1. Given the lokout situation and the lack of a good QB on the roster and AS not wanting to come back, JH would have gotten as much a free pass as posible for this season to have a bad record. But the first thing JH did was sit down and talk with AS. He liked him and trusted him so much he gave the guy his playbook! AS was not even on the team, yet he held in his hands the playbook of JH. He could have taken that playbook to Seattle (McC and Carrol). Imagine that. Face the Niners 2 times a year with the HC who hates JH the most along with the GM who felt screwed when the Niners sacked him.

        3. TB did say what he said. So he had to be convinced that AS was not going to suck. JH had to convince him (who else in the building could), and he did. To the tune of 1 year for 5 million. To keep that in perspective Indy paid K. Collins 4 million. He lost every game and was canned. Niners won 13, and 2nd seed. Yet, many here were mad as hell they gave AS 5 million.

  23. fesnyc says:

    i think i’d rather see The Exorcist again for the first time rather than contemplate 2011/2012 and beyond for the Niners without Harbaugh.

    the comment about his discipline is interesting…Harbaugh seems to be a guy who lives/coaches according to his worldview, of which he is probably quite confident…the hardheaded refusal to speak freely at press conferences probably goes along with the hardheaded requirement that his qbs take their 3 step drops exactly the right way.
