The Santa Rosa Press Democrat just posted my article for Friday. It’s about how these 49ers set the tone in their football games. It’s also about Tony Montana vs. Joe Montana, in a sense. I spoke to Anthony Dixon and Blake Costanzo for the piece. To read it, click here.
To set the tone for yourself, listen to ‘Tony Montana’ here. (Warning: Curse words)

Say hello to my little friend.
…nice read….”All the Niners sing along as they bob and weave like they’re at a night club.”…….
..I loved it when i first noticed it…reminds me of the – The Haka which is a traditional Maori war dance from New Zealand……
…..this is what few on the blog are calling showboating!!!…..
>>reminds me of the – The Haka which is a traditional Maori war dance from New Zealand……
Exactly my thought, oneniner
I call it SWAGGER!The boys’ are back in town!
…it is swagger!!!!
NFL Network is showing the reg. Season game against the Giants right now if you want to catch it again.
Thanks 9ergirl! Tuning in now…
It’s 1pm in India, thanks 49ergal just turned the game on.
I watched it last night. Good stuff. Pretty good game, all-in-all. Loved Eli’s picks! :P
JH and the staff have to make adjustments for this game to slow down the pass rush and insert plays to take advantage of the Giants front four speed. GO NINERS
Grant that song is well it just sux. lets just play football and not worry about rap.
I listen to a lot of rap, but man, that song is TERRIBLE.
Ive read em all, hardly anyone is giving us a chance, the g-men are running their pipes about man handling us. How they were banged up, and now they are healthier and somehow become the best team in the league in just a few short weeks. Well, we have had some banged up guys as well. Im glad they are making us underdogs again. . I hope rolle gets ran over by VD, or FG. All season long they have under estimated us, well, keep doin it, all the way to the SB! and then some! lets go Niners here we go!
Rick,
Some things to ponder:
1. Gmen Offense will face a Defense that hits hard and more importantly, tackles. They will have to earn their yardage.
2. Manning will face a dominate pass rush as did Brees forcing him to throw early resulting in incompletions or holding onto the ball for sacks.
3. A 49er defensive line that is stingy against the run.
4. There will be no easy fumble recoveries for the Gmen defense to capitalize on.
5. Our Guys want it more.
6. The 12 man will be there in support of the home team.
7. 49ers are more superiorly coached.
8. 49er Offensive line will open holes for running game and pass protect opening up passing game.
9. Special teams will play error free.
Variables
1. Delanie Walkers health
Don’t listen to the analysts half of them have pre-existing prejudices against the 49ers like Chris Collinsworth and ESPN’s Jaworski and Allen because they have been beat badly by them as players in the past. They also don’t get down to the root of the strategies or know our team like we do. They mostly depend on statistics to make their calculated decisions.
I agree with you, our guys have momentum, pride, confidence and a strong will to succeed. That makes them dangerous.
Doc
Ignore the talking idiots on tv and the internet (except me right now…) Look where the money’s going for a better idea of what people think. I think the spread has the 49ers by 2.5 or 3? We’re not underdogs in this game. We’re expected to win, and we will.
Not sure if you know this, Grant, but Tony Montana was named after Oliver Stone’s favorite football player. Guess who that could be?
It’s SNOWING at Candlestick??!!!!!
Nice work, again, Grant. Really wish I could’ve found a way to get to the game this weekend. Damn you, adult responsibilities!(and bank account)
Grant,
Excellent read, as I can’t be there, thanks for helping me live it in my mind. It’s Friday and Sunday can’t come soon enough.
Doc
The kickoff team gets me fired up when they go into a dancing frenzy right before kickoff.
It reminds me of an indian war dance just before going to war. I gotta say though, I hate the song. Just can’t get into it….
Grant: thanks for the warning about “Curse words” in the song. Perhaps each post could carry such a warning when they contain them.
The article made for a nice read — a fresh perspective. I love how you and your dad are working together and I admire him for letting your style mellow him out a bit.
Wow, the Rams will play a regular-season NFL game in London in each of the next three seasons, first facing New England in 2012.
Preparing them for the big move?
I think the Rams end up back in LA well this time they will really be in LA and not Orange County.
Grant
I need to apologize for criticizing your articles and for you using other articles on your blog. I realized that you are just trying to give us fans what we crave and what we crave is more articles and information about our Niners. Thanks for your hard work.
Sincerely
shawn
I found out about this song about 3 hours after the game ended. I found a clean version or somewhat clean. My kids have been playing this song no stop for the entire week getting excited for our Niners to play in NFC Championship Game.
Shawn – I play this “Gametime” song all week and then Jimi Hendrix the morning of the game for luck. It’s been working.
Ignore the University of Texas pics, this is “hands-down” the best football pump-up song ever IMO! I wish the Niners used this song.

Sorry it’s two words “Game Time” by Trox and K2. I think it’s the best football pump-up song ever!
I emailed this Trox dude asking how/where I could purchase the song and he sent me the download file for free! email is trox903@gmail.com for a copy of this song (if you like it).

Crabs,
that’s what I’m talking about. Great gametime beat. Can’t help but get fired up listening to that.
Nice song Crab … thanks for sharing
Good article, but the Niners don’t choose to kick when they win the toss, they defer the choice to the second half kickoff. If they chose to kick they’d probably be kicking off to start both halves.
That makes no sense.
it makes plenty of sense cause it’s true. If you win the coin toss you have the choice of receiving, kicking, picking a direction or deferring to the second half. the 9ers usually defer to the second half because they like to have their defense set the tone for the game and then start the second half with the ball. Great strategy. If you choose to kick off then you end up kicking to start both halves (saw that happen this year, not sure what game it was-not a 9ers game)
No hate here, just moving forward.
Doc
You guys kill me. Another double poster? Grant I liked it when you outed Prime for being a double poster. Maybe you should do it more often.
Alex’s play this last week shut people up including me. An entire stadium full of people were waiting for a performance like this. He’s probably had two or three of them in his entire career. In 7 years. Glad this one came during a time that it mattered. I am hoping that something in him clicked and that he will somehow grow from this performance.
He did things in this game he’s never done before. The type of things that a system, or coaching have no effect on. He threw passes to Vernon that were accurate. His sideline pass to Vernon was accurate. Lets be honest, Alex has sucked at that pass all season. His entire career actually.
He hit Vernon on an 8 pattern perfectly. Beautifully thrown ball, hit him in stride which allowed Vernon the ability to not slow down, to use his speed and to maximize his RAC. Alex does not throw that ball with regularity at all.
The TD pass to Vernon for a first for Alex. He threw to a spot and trusted his receiver to be there. He hasn’t done that all season. Right when Vernon planted his cut foot, Alex let it go. Had he had this type of trust in his receivers during the season, we would have been a better, more experience team right now in the playoffs. Our coaches would have had more confidence in certain play calls, our wide receivers would have had more confidence in making the plays because they would have done it all season.
The game Alex had was legendary for sure, but I am still looking for the same things from him now that I was looking for all season. Consistency. Never shown it his entire career. Two games in a row? He showed it once this year when he played Philly then Tampa. Then he disappears for several games. Well two games in a row he almost never puts together but for us to move on, he’ll have to.
This stat is going to loom large this weekend. Yes Alex has a good completion percentage, and yes he is not turning the ball over. I believe his biggest area of growth is in raising his 3rd down conversions. If he did this, then his lack of scoring wouldn’t matter so much.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/downs/seasontype/2
BTW, check out where Eli is on the 3rd down conversion list. For all you guys that think I’m hating on Alex again, look back. I am responding because I was called out. Get jerk off’s like this off the blog and we would all be rejoicing instead of still poking sticks at people.
Here’s a stat for ya from Sam Lam.
The Catch I, II, III were all thrown on third down. He says 3rd and 3.
Weird.
Weird for sure. Erie too the similarities between 81 and this year. A ton of similarities.
I wouldn’t call that comment fair and balanced. Don’t want to go negative but it takes two to tango and we’ll go there after the 9er Superbowl win.
My gametime song has and always will be Iron Maidens’ Aces High. Lets roll 49ers!
Ofcourse with Winston Churchill intro…are you kidding me? Gets me pumped right fock up!!
Definitely Churchillian intro. Harbaugh loves the military analogies. How about something like:
“We have before us an battle of the most momentous kind. We have before us one hour of struggle and of inflicting suffering. You ask, what is our strategy? I will say: It is to wage war at the Candlestick, on the soft soil, and in the air, with all our might and with all the strength that we can muster; to wage war buoyed by our defense an our 70,000 fans against a mediocre team sustained by monstrous hype never surpassed even by the dark, lamentable catalogue of East Coast media fluff. That is our strategy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory — to ensure a trip to the Superbowl, at all costs, victory in spite of the much-vauned Giants’ pass rush, despite their fleet-footed receivers, victory, however long and hard the road may be.”
Go baby Go!!!!!!!!
And NY’s is “Run for the hills”..
Brent Jones on Mac and Murph on KNBR was all fired up this morning. He’s had enough of “the cocky New York suckers”. He’s ready for a payback time — hasn’t gotten over the 1991 defeat. He regrets that they didn’t give the ball to Rathman who had never fumbled after “Youngster” threw the ball to him over the middle on the “Pipe” play for a first down on the Giant’s 43. He’s calling a Niners win by 2 TDs.
I’m excited. Got a free ticket to the game — my first Niners playoff game. Lot of history, even more at stake.
Grant, I loved this piece, and greatly appreciating your writings in the PD. Also your dad’s today was very good and I have been liking his stuff more and more. Keep up the good work. I was at the game on Saturday and kept wondering what the dancing was about (I took some good photos of them doing it). It was so loud I never could hear anything from the PA that day.
yes i always wondered too..thanks Grant
Soapoaga vs Baas your thoughts faithfull?
Razor, I’m not too surprised that Baas isn’t feeling all that well these days…
Freddie P. Soft just told me it should be an easy win for the niners because they did this before and thet VD should relax because the giants secondary are slow.
If we lose this game it was a great season. Thats what matters.
that is clearly a FP Soft type comment…resting on laurels
Fail!
Joe Montana SF Anthem feat.SWINLA,YOUNG DUNN,CUTTY CUT,NAPALM
http://youtu.be/Hfb7V9wq2SU
Heard this earlier on ESPN Scott Van Pelt show.
Alex Smith, over the last three years as a starting QB @Candlestick is 17-1 vs the point spread! I like those numbers, take it to the bank people!
One big difference in this game that I see compared to the November game vs Giants, the crowd will be a much bigger factor.
The Giants have had 4 straight must-win games and eventually that wears on you. An NFL team that lost 7 regular season games will not win 5 straight meaningful games, especially with no bye week!
@Crab15
No argument from me. lol
DS – Scott Van Pelt picks S.F. vs Ravins Super Bowl and co-host Ryen Russillo picked S.F. vs N.E.
DS – I listened to online WFAN sports radio in NY last night and these New Yorkers make me wanna puke. The callers and the show hosts are talking more about playing N.E. or Ravins in Super Bowl rather than worry about us. No respect for Niners!!
They are even more cocky and arrogant than Pat Riley! :-)
I was listening to Sirius NFL radio the friday night before the saints/lions game and saints fans were calling in and asking how they were gonna beat the Packers in the NFC championship game. I heard giant fans this morning talking about the matchup between the giants and the patriots in the SB. Crazy! And the funny thing about it was they were all answering them. They didn’t advise them to wait and see if those teams make it, they just answered them like it was the inevitable.
MontanaMan – I hear ya man! No Niner respect!
You should post more often in here bro.
Ya, I’ve been on a messed up work schedule these last few months but hopefully things go back to normal next week.
If the Giants beat our team they will most likely win the superbowl
Tony Montana has a great beat but weak lyrics. When they introduce Whitner they have to play Enter Sandman or Mama Said Knock You Out. When the Defense takes the field for the first time they need to play the intro to We Ready by Archie Eversole. The lyrics to that song are desipicable but the intro is freaking awesome….
We Ready, We Ready, We Ready for Y’all.
I went with a coach buddy to go watch some highly touted High School players play in the state playoffs. Before the game, one of the schools intentionally stayed in the locker room after the other team had taken the field. From the locker room all you could hear coming out in a deep bass because of the echo was…. We Ready, We Ready, We Ready for Ya’ll. Then their entire student section joined in with the team while they were still in the locker room… We Ready, We Ready, We Ready for Ya’ll.
The effect was actually incredible. I didn’t even have a rooting interest in the game and it gave me goose bumps. It would be awesome if the entire stadium were chanting We Ready…. when the 9ers went out on defense.
Ok Mr. Matt M is taking the Giants this weekend! I hope to prove him wrong! Go Niners
Best case scenario for Sunday:
Knock Eli Manning out in first quarter and then feast on Giants backup QB. You know….that imposter of a QB David Carr!! Did some of you forget about him?
23J, we really are one QB away from the Super Bowl! :-)
Crab!!!!
What a ride huh? This year has been astounding and TOO FAST!
I’ve got my game face on and I’m ready for another SB. Are you playing some Jimi this Sunday morning/afternoon? lol
OORAH!
Go 9ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hofe – Am I playing some Jimi Sunday morning? You know the answer to that question bro!
‘Cause I’m a voodoo child!!!
“YOW!”
Since this is the first NFC championship game between the Niners and the Giants since the infamous Craig fumble game, I have a question.
I have heard Joe interviewed several times and he has always maintained that Marshall deliberately twisted and broke Joe’s pinkie on purpose on the hit that ended Joe’s day. Marshall denies this and Joe always says “just look at the film”.
Has any of you looked at the film? thoughts?
giants are niner QB killers that is fact….
JM got hit square in the back and his arm flew backwards and in the process in kind of wrapping flies into marshalls hand and who really knows……JM wasn’t holding his pinky when he got up to leave the field and unsnappped his helment with his right hand so i tend to believe marshall from what i can see….
@jg
You should know by now that I am not so easily swayed by others what to think. Like it, agree with it, or not. I bring my own taste to the blog. lol
And I have heard that before (Bubba) not doing the job several times over the years. Maybe Rathman did the job because Bubba couldn’t.
nope bubba did a good job pushed marshall to theoutside and rathman finished him up…..
http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2012/01/19/san-francisco-49ers-vs-new-york-giants-playoff-history-leonard-marshalls-hit-roger-craigs-fumble-and-trey-junkins-snap/
@jg
New, or rather old angle on this:
What is the #1 job of an OL, OT at that?
To protect the QB. Does not matter how long he has to keep the block. Fair? Maybe not. But it is the OL duty in their football life to prevent injury to the QB. All OL will tell you that. Bubba included.
Now, did Bubba prevent the hit that injured JM or not? No. So he failed on this play.
Yeah, who missed the block or let up on the block so Marshall could crush Joe? A couple of guesses…he works for channel 2 after the games. Hmmm.
that hit was well outside the pocket and 7 or 8 seconds after the snap
giants were just an awesome defense then
guess u will have to blame rathman
JM clearly had a chance to throw the rcvr open on that play
sorry that was my bay coming out in me, or was that 23J
@jg
That was Bubba’s guy.
Why do you think he is always harping on OL to hold, beat down, punch, trip, anything to prevent the sack.
Because Seifert and the coaching staff laid into him big time after that play.
u are just going on what Hof insinuates…..it was rathman that put marshall on the ground on the blitz and let him get back up…
ok it wasn’t a blitz….bubba pushed him to the outside causing marshall to start going to the ground and rathman finished up on him….montana was in the pocket for 5 seconds before beginning to be flushed out
so i put the blame on rathman
it is not real blame….it was just a football play marashall made …..
lots of rain, good for us bad for the giants! Hope the fans can get loud!
Working off of an idea I think I read from Ribico a few days back, here’s what I hope:
The first time Manning screws up, by throwing an interception, or a badly thrown incomplete pass, or fumbles, or even goes three and out…I wanna hear that crowd SCREAMING
“WE WANT CARR! WE WANT CARR! WE WANT CARR!”
It might get in Manning’s head just a little, but I think Alex would really appreciate the irony.
Lots of rain, Hope the fans can still get loud, Adam wins. com just predicted ninners 20 giants 16 , Hope he is right, Hope nobody bets their mortgage on This! Stay Dry!
Crab it would be nice if we can knock Eli out of the game with a sprained shoulder or ankle in first drive. I am getting really anxious already
Chicago – What’s your score prediction for Sunday?
SF 31 NY 26
I think this is going to be a very tough game since we dont have all our WRs (Ginn and J Morgan) so its going to be close and the OL has to run block and Manage the clock. My Prediction is 49ers 27, Giants 24! GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
anyone know where i can find these at? kinda hard to get my 9ers gear this far east. i figure someone has this stuff in abundance in SF. maybe a store that sells online but based in SF. tried the regulars like 49ers.com and nfl.com. no luck in my size (2x)

The Giants are so happy that they are playing the Niner’s, the Giants would of been toast if they had to go back to the dome in New Orleans, where they got destroyed earlier, now it’s time for them to eat crow. I hope we beat those cocky bastards by 3 touchdowns and our defense gets a couple of interception’s. My brother who is a Giant fan has been given me smack all week, for god sake Niner’s please beat these dirt bags so I can shut by brother up. please !!
The injury report looks rough for Sunday. I have to say and I know I’ll catch some flack for this, but I like that Willis is out. I think Grant played better post injury than Willis has and I’d like Willis to get the rest for the Super Bowl and next season.
The depth on this team is phenominal. You hear the cliche next man up all around the league, but this team has built an organization around that mentality. I think we have 2 starting defenses and you can’t really classify any of those guys as second string.
I
Willis out?
He is listed as questionable.
I travel for business and since i live in Chicago now due to work its nauseating to hear all the Eastcoast media predictions and comments about the Giants! We are labeled as inferior team and some of the experts expecting us to get blown out of the water just like the Falcons! I hope to GOD we can beat the H out of the Giants and my man Alex Smith has the best game of his life. GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Spike TV is showing Scarface right now. Worst Spanish accent I ever heard from not only Pacino..but also the rest of the anglos as Cubans. Amos and Andy like.
