Vernon Davis says a bad word (Lowell column)

My dad drove down with me to Santa Clara today to interview the 49ers in their locker room. He happened to participate in a group interview with Vernon Davis, and he wrote a fun column on the colorful tight end’s use of a very picturesque word inĀ Americana. To read my dad’s column, click here.

Hell yeah, maternal fornicater!!!! Loved pops’ article!!! I could feel the excitement!!!

  2. Razoreater says:

I read your Pops’ column and I liked it. VD is spreading in the locker room. The only known cure for this special strain. A Sixth World Championship! Glad to hear the man is maturing and leading and cussing, because in this political football world we live in it I can assume it is on Commisioner Gordans to do list. If you catch VD tell him Razoreater said the time to Live On Your Feet…Or Die On Your Knees is nigh.

  3. Adam says:

    Ha! Nice.

And I agree with Lowell 100%. Love that Vernon Davis! Love his passion.

  4. Brian says:

So the Cohn’s are so cool. I mean they not only get to hear, but they have the class to report useless jock talk in NFL locker rooms… so cool. Thanks for a useless article spelling out obscenities. Truly professional. That column headline is not amusing, but confusing, to my ten year old niner’s fan.
Totally un-cool and very much cohn. Leave the locker room where you found it next-time.

    • Adam says:

OK, it’s not for 10-year-olds. I agree. Maybe it’s not the classiest thing in the world. But, in the real world your son (or daughter) will hear those words a million times on the playground. It’s not like we can pretend those words don’t exist. Should Vernon be a bit more classy or a bit more restrained? Maybe. But they weren’t aimed at anyone in anger, he was pumped up. Happy!

I think there are two important points to Lowell’s column that have nothing to do with the expletive (in my opinion.)

The first is that Vernon Davis is three dimensional; he’s the real deal. He’s got some depth. A lot of times you hear the company line from these guys or all we see is the bland, business-like franchise persona. How refreshing it is to be reminded that these guys are human, that they can sometimes speak their mind – let it leak out a bit. Some players and former players are all over Greg McElroy for giving the world some honesty, for example. Hello? A real person with a point of view on the rotting corpse of the Jets. Yes! Some honesty and humanity, at last. I say GOOD FOR YOU McELROY! Shake it up.

The second is that it’s about damned time that the Niners feel they can celebrate a little bit, take some pride in their accomplishments. Guys like Vernon and Alex and Frank, these guys have been through misery together for the better part of a decade. They deserve their success and they deserve their happiness.

A little joyful outburst once in a while? I’ll take it every time.

Adam – That was perfect man!

      • Brotha tuna says:

        Well said, Adam.
        two points:
1/ when I was about 8 or 9 me and a friend and his Dad were walking into a Bait/Tackle/Coffee/Beer shack at a marina when a loud voice boomed out a word nobody would consider ready-for-primetime. His dad looked at us and said “Close your ears boys”, and that was the end of it. We somehow managed to live through the experience.
2/ Because there is an ethic of keeping the locker room stuff with the team-members-only we fans don’t get much insight. Grant (this time through Lowell) gets us some peeks back-stage without violating any trusts; I like it.
As good as this team has been at keeping their mouths shut, this one little outburst of exuberance shouldn’t count against Vernon.

Maybe it’s a chance to advise your son that sometimes people will use words that are…not good. And as Adam says kids are going to use them and he’s going to hear them from his peers.

As a parent I understand your irritation but perhaps you can screen out LC’s columns? My 11 year old was using the F word picked up at school over here from his peers. Not from Lowell

      Best

    • AngusinCanada says:

Lighten up Brian. My 9 year old dressed up as a toy soldier (nutcracker style) for his school christmas pageant. 6 other boys in his class dressed in army fatigues – for christmas…. Kids are being exposed to far worse influences than ‘bad language’. You’d be better off railing against the militarism of society that is relentlessly boosted by the NFL. Boo-ya.

I look forward to a 49er win. Immediately after the game I look forward to Harbaugh using Vernons favorite cuss word in a sentence during the mid field handshake with Payton. It would sound a little like this.
Hey M*&%$R F*&^%er, that was for blitzing us the entire game during the preseason. Oh and next season we’ll be giving you more of the same in your stadium….

  6. ME says:

The article was ok. Nothing to get too excited about.

  7. NinersRoc says:

    YES!! Live or Die FotherMucker!

  8. drsgrosse says:

Great example of the stupidity of L Cohn’s articles.

  9. fesnyc says:

great article…Vernon’s enthusiasm comes through loud and clear. damn its good to be a Niner fan. I hope Vernon, J. Smith, and all the other Niners have a game on Jan 14 that they can remember fondly the rest of their lives (just behind victories in the NFC championship and the Super Bowl)

  10. Frank in Minnesota says:

It is so nice to see real honest enthusiasm from anyone on the 49ers…while so many of them are tight-lipped and play hard to get, Davis just acts like himself and is so refreshing! He is fun to read about and your dad seems well taken by Davis….Grant, you must admit that it was a fun read!

  11. ribico says:

Reminded me of that Stephen Colbert episode when he and his interviewee were debating some Biblical passage. Bested, the guest said, “I see you’ve remembered your Sunday School lessons”. To which Colbert replied (in his great mock aggression) “I *teach* Sunday School, motherf*er!”

Hey, to be human is to swear. No biggie.

  12. rocket says:

You all know why Lowell wrote that. It’s a direct contrast from Harbaugh and that’s what people appreciate once in awhile. It gets old getting the same canned responses. When somebody speaks out candidly without giving rehearsed answers it’s a nice change.

  13. Stan says:

Vernon is so full of HGH and PED’s I’m not sure he’s responsible for his outburst.

  14. Stan says:

I hate to give KNBR and pub..but they claim they have an interview with a sportwriter who calls Harbaugh a coward and a dick. First thought- Lowell’s eastern relative who doesnt have a filter…

  15. Stan says:

Grant –I propose that your Dad go to KQED-FM,and pitch an idea for a sports show of higher level..fun,but..well,like his blog used to be. An hour a day?
Do in depth-but still allow boobs like me to ask questions, call in.
    How does that sound?

  16. Stan says:

Hmm-Harbaugh showed the team a nature film on the African Honeybadger from a utube vid. But,its a parody nature vid narrated by a guy in a very effeminate voice.
I wonder if thats going to go over as un PC?..especially in SF.
