Alex Smith finishes third for Comeback Player of the Year

Alex Smith finished third in the voting for the A.P. Comeback Player of the Year Award. He received 7 out of 50 votes. The Lions’ QB, Matthew Stafford, finished first and received 21 of the votes.

This gives you a sense of how the country views these two quarterbacks. On the west coast it seems like this season was predominantly about Alex Smith and to some extent Tim Tebow. The rest of the country only somewhat acknowledges Smith and focuses on more the prolific passers like Stafford.

Having said that, I think Smith is more deserving of this award. He turned his team around more drastically, plus he beat Stafford in Detroit. Smith had a more unique story plus a plain better year than Stafford, but that’s not how the rest of the country sees it.

my initial reaction is that Alex was robbed. Stafford missed some time due to injury, but if i recall correctly Alex was benched at times last year (and doesnt that seem like a long time ago!). no question Alex had the bigger comeback. oh well, i hope that keeps him motivated to come back and win a SB.

by the way, was feeling somewhat blah tonight, waiting for the SB tomorrow, so i replayed the last 2 minutes of the Saints game. no better pick-me-up than that! heck, the 4th quarter of that game alone should have sealed this award for Alex

    • niner61 says:

Let’s keep that lack of respect coming as with our guys for defensive POY. Can’t see anybody more deserving than J. Smith either. Gives everybody a little attitude to start the season.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @niner61

My guy JS was passed over for a long time as a Pro Bowler.

Whether he wins that award or not, does not change how I feel about the guy. A true warrior in the best sense of the word.

The Niners need to get this guy a Super Bowl win. Anything less will be a sad ending of a great career. I hope we can give him several rings. He deserves them and much much more.

      • OREGONINER says:

        Hey 61

Thanks for the reminder! ‘Lining up for some ‘kicks in the shins’. Personally, I like the bit of ‘swagger’ we saw in the last two games, and the confidence the team showed…Here’s my shins!

  2. MTL_9ers_FAN says:

Doesn’t make any sense to me how Stafford got the award. Not to take anything away from Stafford but he recovered from an injury and performed to expectation if not better. Smith came back from a losing fanchise and a city, fans and media that had labelled him a bust. Smith get’s my vote!

  3. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Great job! There may be some bumps along the road, but the best is yet to come for Harbaugh and the 49ers.

  4. NickRow says:

    @Grant
Thanks for the new blog posts. It was getting nauseating listening to the Alex fan club. Anyway, staying on topic, Alex made great strides, but is still flawed. Lets see if a 2nd year under JH can address some of the voids in Alex’ game.

    • Neal says:

I could not agree more, AS improved but that is not saying much, he went from a D to a C plus but has several flaws.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Nick, how can you doubt AS? Don’t you realize that he is the reason for all of the wins this year, and is the second coming of JM and SY (oops I think I just threw up a little)

    • AlbertS says:

      Troll wagon just pulled up?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Thanks for notifying all of us to your arrival.

      • Jack Hammer says:

When you have nothing intelligent to say, call them a troll is that how it works?

      • AlbertS says:

Just a warning. Troll wagon w/ “Alex sux” sticker gets fill up pretty quickly.

      • Jack Hammer says:

You bring such a wealth of knowledge to this blog, thank you for the comedic relief. Always fun to read posts from fans whose knowledge of football can fit into a thimble.

Go back to making out with DS to Alex Smith highlights.

      • AlbertS says:

        Intelligent gem like this?

“Yea he will get a contract but it’s like the last ugly girl at the dance, all of the pretty ones are gone, and only Alice is left.”

      • Jack Hammer says:

I don’t know where you pulled that from but it’s true. Truly great QB’s make all those around them better. Case in point, JM’s first TD pass in Super Bowl 19. Nobody would have expected him going there but he did and it paid off.

      • Ceadderman says:

I made the mistake of reading Jack Hammer’s replies.

I feel so much dumber now. Funny how the guy has a witty thimble retort. Must have taken him about 3 seconds to think that one up. Couldn’t have been much longer since that’s about the time when he reached down ala Mike Ditka to adjust his jockstrap.

Jack, I didn’t see ANYBODY comparing Smith to Montana or Young. The only people that typically do this are the people who like to proclaim “I know what a QB looks like and it’s not Alex Smith… blah blah blah whine whine whine”. Catch my drift, or do you need a big white wall and a box of crayons to have it mapped out for you? I grew up watching Joe from the time he was a Rookie to the day that he retired. Joe is the greatest ever. Only one man like him and he’s been retired for years. Give it a rest and lets see what the kid can do w/o you blather-scythes yammering on an on about how Smith isn’t.

Don’t even mention Steve Young again if you cannot acknowledge his ENTIRE career. He turned his career around with Bill Walsh. Before Walsh picked him up for a STEAL, he was on his way out the way you imagine Smith was on his way out.

And yes sir when people look in Webster’s there is a black and white picture of you next to the term “Troll”. Considering there was no call for you to crawl out from under your rock to begin with I will take my leave of you.

      • DS94everXev says:

How did my name get brought up in this thread?

        @ceadderman

Yes. It is a mistake to read hammer heads posts. As his name implies, you can get more reason and train of thought from a hammer than from him.

And, I believe AS and SY were about the same age when they finally got a real coach. AS now has JH. SY had BW. How/why AS can’t equal the greatness of SY is only in the minds of those who have invested so much time and energy and yes, hate for a guy who has wronged them not…I don’t get it. Nor do I want to understand how one hates another so easily.

  5. Prime Time says:

Hey Nickrow, nice little chicken di$k jab at Alex after trying to be all righteous, typical hater trying to stir it up on unrelated topic and spinning it to the hate perspective, classic loser.
Then everyone wonders why this blog turns to crap, cause the haters start hating for no reason, no provocation. This idiot just decided to be a clown and start another unnecessary AS war. Now all you haters tell me who started it and why?

    • htwaits says:

      Try not taking the bait.

    • NickRow says:

Wow Prime Minister of The Smither Club, you’ve got some issues. A mere criticism of Alex brings out that kind of rage. You need therapy, Oneniner.

      • cbj says:

        Nickrow,
“A mere criticism?” that was completely out of context and did not fit the discussion in any way at all. You are obsessed with your hatred that is fueled caused by wallowing in self-love. You have seriously hurt feelings because some people don’t agree with you, so you use any EXCUSE to advance your hatful attitude.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @cbj

        Well put.

Of course we need to allow some wiggle room here with nickrow.

He thinks prime and oneniner are the same. Look at how they write, their style, and you will find them to be quite different. So, he is quite slow on the uptake. Seriously now, he might have a disorder if he does not see the difference..

      • NickRow says:

        @cbj
Being critical is not the same as being hateful. But thats not how you Alex lovers see it when the criticism is direct at Alex. To the Alex Fan Club, thats blasphemy.

        @bs94
Here’s some advice, when the conversation doesnt involve you, stay out of it.

I’ve noticed a pattern with you. Everytime I address Prime Minister, you reply and vise versa. Perhaps you, PT, and Oneniner are ALL the same person. What pathetic sole you are.

      • DS94everXev says:

        nick

Where are your comments pointing out PW, JS,MC (especially), Aldon Smith and everybody elses mistakes? If you want to play that game, go ahead. But the haters never point out any other mistakes of the popular guys on the team. That is why you get no respect.

I have not responded to you for a bit despite you talkng about me anawful lot. You calling prime out to be civil is a joke. You can’t even respect me to use my proper name. You need to include yourself in that list then.

Now I’ll let you go ahead and hate. I suppose that is what you’re good at. Isn’t it?

  6. htwaits says:

It’s been that way since day one in 1946. The media is East Coast and nothing is going to change that. Having John Madden around on national TV for a while helped, but in the long run perceptions are always going to swing East.

    • DS94everXev says:

Detroit was in the dumps forever. They have never won anything since it mattered.

They were 0-16 with a better team than the Niners had in AS first season. With the car industry finally coming back, and the fact that Detroit is not quite East coast, but close.

Stafford was the favorite by the stats guys. Because he threw for 5,000 yards and rushed for almost as many chasing down guys who picked him off.

In all, that would be 10,000 yards by the guy.

  7. DS94everXev says:

    Hey haters

Rich Gannon, and our own Grant here think AS deserved the award.

Can you at least admit that there must have been some merit when I among others suggested it as well? That maybe you could have been cooler with the notion. And perhaps even support it, you being Niner fans (supposedly) and all. And root for our guy, instead of the other guys?

    • DS94everXev says:

I’ve read where several of you say you think AS can lead us to the Super Bowl.

If you think that, then why are you trying to get rid of him? There are not that many QB’s in the league who can do that. And if you think AS can, you don’t mess things up and dump him for the flavor of the month.

Do the NO fans want to get rid of DB? He can lead the team to the Super Bowl, but didn’t for the second year in a row. Do you hate him if you were a Saints fan for failing? I think not.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, we don’t think he can lead us to the Super Bowl, that is why we are trying to get rid of him.

We don’t support him for comeback player award either because the award isn’t meant to go to players who finally play decent after 6 futile years.

    • Neal says:

Grant is a Niner fan, so that opinion is bias and again Trent Dilfer who is a friend of AS rates AS # 20th in the NFL, so that is hardly anything to celebrate to comeback player of the year, except for the Lovers and man crush of AS, who have very low expectaitions of what a QB can be.

      • Ceadderman says:

Dilfer doesn’t rate Smith @ 20th. But hey just put words in the man’s mouth. O_o

      • Neal says:

        Ceadderman,
Read the article again it clearly says that, you can elect not to read it.

      • Ceadderman says:

Link it then fool. I don’t need you to tell me what Dilfer says.

I can name probably 6 players better than Smith. I’d be interested to see who Dilfer considers the other 13 to be.

        For my 6?
        Peyton
        Brees
        Brady
        Rodgers
        Vick
        Manning.

Played pretty well against a Manning led Colts team a year or so ago. Defense collapsed just like they always did during the Nolan, Singletary era.

Beat Brees at his own game in the Playoffs.

Beat the Giants in week 10 and were it not for 3 fumbles from Williams who should have gotten paid for his contributions, was BETTER than “EliTE” in the Championship game.

and engineered a 4th Quarter Comeback against the Igglets with Vick not having a 2nd Half score.

The only 2 guys Smith didn’t face were Brady and Rodgers.

If Dilfer said he would rank Smith in the 20th spot, either this season hadn’t happened yet or he can blow that junk out his tailpipe and I hope you’re standing right behind him when he follows through with that.

20th?!? What a crock. All the other QBs’ actually have Receivers that can get separation, make timely catches and get them YAC. Please name ONE of our guys that does all of that consistently. You can’t cause they don’t exist.

  8. Hoferfan67 says:

The CPOY should be and was based on an injured player coming back and playing at a high level – though he had the luxury of throwing to one of the top two WR’s in the game – the voters got it right.

    • msclemons67 says:

I have to agree. Alex had a good season but he didn’t really “come back” from anything. His growth as a QB evolved this year – he didn’t come back from a previous high, he reached a new high.

Stafford had a great season, then was injured, then came back from injury to have another great season. That’s the definition of CPOY.

    • jgwindsor says:

AS came back from two shoulder surgeries in those 6 years….

    • BigP says:

Yeah, I don’t see the big deal. Stafford deserved it. After he missed most of last season with another shoulder injury he came back and performed well. Garrison Hearst is still the most inspirational Comeback Player of the Year winner to me. He was one of my favorities and it really seemed like his career was over before he came back.

  9. Neal says:

    Grant,
The defense and the special teams turn the Niner’s around, more then Smith, and for what ever reason the Niners were horrific on third down;s and in the red zone, plus we made NFL history on field goals, which I don’t think that is such a great thing, David Acres deserve as much or more credit then Smith who went from horrible to a average QB , and Trent Dilfer who I respect this week wrote a column for ESPN and rated Smith 20th best QB this year, so yea he improved from 3oth to 20th, big improvement but not worthy of a award as comeback player of the year.

Also Smith is the safest QB in the NFL, he throws the best worm burners to Michael Crabtree and he is afraid to zing it and becomes frozen in the pocket after his primary receiver is covered. Smith needs everything to be perfect for him to suceed, great call plaing and this year the call playing was good but other times not so great, Smith is a order taker, if the order is great he will succeed if not he is a flop. Can you imagine if we had AR this year and with our great defense , we would have a freaking dynasty.

    • niner61 says:

and if “we” had Larry Fitzgerald’s services this year “we’d” be playing in Indy tomorrow against Brady if you want to continue the fantasy foolishness. LOL

      • Jack Hammer says:

Uh, not really. AS wouldn’t have been able to get him the ball anyway.

      • NickRow says:

Exactly, Fitzgerald can’t throw the ball to himself. This is same tired argument/Alexcuse we’ve heard many times. I wonder why Garçon and Reggie Wayne had pedestrian years when Peyton Manning went down.

      • niner61 says:

and the hate continues to blind. 4 ” perfect” TD passes to VD in the two playoff games, wonder why that happened…. and we’re supposed to put any credence in your “expert opinions”. LOL, LOL
If it wasn’t for LF, Kolb would have been a total bust for AZ. Bet you two were on the get Kolb bandwagon before he went there. Yeah, Crabtree would’ve made him an all-pro here. LOL

      • Jack Hammer says:

Niner, you are forgetting that AS won’t deliver the ball unless the receiver is WIDE OPEN. Of those balls you are talking about only the Vernon Post was one where it needed to be fit in a tight window, and he only threw there because JH told him to. JH said as much in his post game presser.

Fitzgerald needs someone who is willing to throw a jump ball from time to time, which AS has proven he won’t do for fear of a mistake.

      • jgwindsor says:

        VD wasn’t wide open

      • niner61 says:

“and he only threw there because JH told him to.”

Some how you managed to not listen well as Smith’s instructions were to only look for VD or get rid of it if he wasn’t OPEN. Pretty tight open, I’d say. I’d also bet Smith wouldn’t be afraid to throw it in LF’s direction. LF has a reputation for actually “catching” balls thrown in his vicinity, not having them bounce of his hands. He’s called a playmaker for a reason and that’s not from just having a good college career. It gives a QB a lot more confidence knowing the ball doesn’t have to be on the guys numbers to get a reception.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @niner61

Niners get LF, and are able to keep most of their team together, and the Niners will win more than one Super Bowl.

I mean., have him on one side. VD split wide on the other. And, how does a defense defend that? Just send FG up the middle. No crummy LB”s around since they have to worry about LF and VD, and FG runs free in the secondary. Or have another speedster in the slot, and have them all run go routes and have DW catch the ball underneath after all the WR’s have taken the defenders away upfield.

Put LF and VD on the same side, get the whole defense setting up leaning that way, and send KH to run outside the other direction. How many yards will KH get on average from that?

Want to blitz the Niners now? Think you can get there before AS can get the ball to either VD or LF? I wouldn’t. That lets the OL to actually deal with a 4 man rush a lot more since the defense needs to be very careful about when they go 1 on 1 with LF and VD. Consequently, AS has more time to find a WR, and the WR has more time to get open.

      • niner61 says:

DS … doesn’t even have to be a LF. Neal was fantasy fooling around with his AR wish so I played too. The Niners just need a couple of quality WOs that are playmakers who don’t have passes semi regularly bouncing of their hands, chest or facemask. Want to see Morgan back and get a good young receiver or two in the draft. If they can get an established FA WO playmaker without overpaying, GREAT. This o-line should be a lot better in pass protection this coming season with this last year and a full offseason under their belts. Everybody on the offense, coaches included, was learning on the fly in the ’11 season. 14-4 … a fantastic achievement under the circumstances.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I know niner61.

But, you gotta admit, that one guy could change the entire complexion of our offense and how other teams defend us. With what we already have, that would be the Deion Sanders addition in ’95 to our offense. You may have been joking, but jokes can also be 100% true.

Plus it is the off-season and WR is by far our largest area of need. So, why not dream of going after the best guy in the world right now at WR?

    • OREGONINER says:

I would appreciate it if you got off your ‘worm-burner’ statements. A GOOD QB throws ‘worm-burners’ at his receivers feet, or ten yards out of bounds when he has no open receiver and he doesn’t want to take an Intentional grounding penalty, at the same time not throwing to a receiver who’s not going anywhere after the catch, and may get beheaded by a safety or LB as soon as the ball arrives. Don’t take my word for it, ASK THE RECEIVERS.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @oregon

Every WR thinks he is open all the time.

The one question that should be outlawed under penalty of losing ones job is the “Were you guys getting open?” question to the WR after a game.

They always answer “Yes.” Even though the announcers (which often include a QB) say all game long that the WR’s were not open.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Thanks for making the point, Oregon. Throwing into the dirt when a receiver’s closely or double-covered also prevents INTs, kind of an important key to the Niners’ success this season.

  10. big niner says:

keep dissing this team on all phases….It will only continue to fuel US!!!!!!

    • Jack Hammer says:

Yes big niner, I am sure that the team reads these posts for motivation. You are a genius!

      • big niner says:

you’re the genius….I’m talking about the players getting no respect!!! Stafford, comeback player of the year??? coming back from what an injury? don’t you have to have a bad season first? Suggs dpoy? really what about J smith?

  11. lady49er says:

Such is the verification that the nfl is pretty east coast biased…

  12. mike says:

Alex had a great year but Stafford threw for 5000 yards and a gaggle of touchdowns. I’m way more stoked to be a Niner fan than vice versa, however the lions got a much bigger return from their former number one overall pick with a history of injuries than we did.

  13. Johnc113 says:

Have to disagree. Smith improved for sure in that he cut down on interceptions thrown, and he had a few big time games, but he was mostly bland. The defense carried this team as demonstrated in the NFC championship game. The offense blew it as niners went 1 for 16 on third down. Smith was an ordinary quarterback in a mediocre offense ,the last 4 minutes of the New Orleans game excepted.

    • NickRow says:

Beware, you might get the ‘hater’ label from the ultrasensitive Smithers. Being objective about Alex’ game is blasphemy in their book.

    • 23jordan says:

      John

Excellent comment, get ready for your label from the cult of as Ithers. They are doing the best they can to fight off anyone who tries to open their eyes. Remain steadfast because you will be vilified. Average Alex has a devoted follOwing!! Especially DS. That is the unstable one. DS is big on alex but small on football knowledge.

  14. PhD says:

Who came in second (without having to go search for it)?

  15. robwco says:

This is a argue that never ends till Alex moves or retires from our franchise.
Any of those guys deserves the award IMO.
But still i want Alex out.

  16. Jones says:

Guys i think it’s fair to say that coach harbaugh is one of the better and smarter coaches in the NFL. So if he wanted smith back and talked him into staying then harbaugh knows smiths a good qb. Let’s get real when 49ers drafted smith they threw him right in the game with a coach who didn’t know what he was doing. Don’t expect big numbers from smith, he was drafted 1st pick because of his smart desicion making not because he can throw for 5000 yards and 45 touchdowns. So I say keep smith and expect him to do good next season with a familiar offense.

  17. Houston 9er says:

Smith had a better year than Stafford???

Grant, crack kills. Lay off the pipe bro.

  18. Sean in Canada says:

“The NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award is presented by the Professional Football Writers of America to the player in the National Football League (NFL) who shows perseverance in overcoming adversity, in the form of not being in the NFL the previous year, overcoming a severe injury, or simply a poor performance.” – Football Almanac

I agree with Stafford winning the award but for those who don’t think AS should have been in the category look at the criteria. I’d think the anti-Smith crowd would recognize the last one.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Sean, thanks for posting the description of the CPOY. I understand the message, but many/most of the players that win comeback from injury – which I agree with. AS may have been in the running if his throwing yds were in the 4k+ range but again, no CJ on the 9er team. It is a luxury to have one of the best two WR’s in the game that gets separation or will fight for the ball if it is poorly thrown. Good for MStafford.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof

The Niners did not throw enough to get 4,000 yards. Those QB’s who did throw for 4000+ did so on teams who attempted a lot more passes.

If one were to use yards as a measuring stick, it should be the average/attempt.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Hofer, I’m cool with guys winning that award over guys who had down years or what not too. I just wanted to post that for the group of people saying he shouldn’t have been nominated for the award. He obviously fit the category.

    • AngusinCanada says:

Sean, thankyou. And I would have voted for Alex.

  19. WhosGotItBetter says:

I have high hopes for AS. I’ve been wearing my #11 jersey all year and will be wearing it today while watching what should have been Number 6. With that being said anyone who can’t see that Smith has some flaws and room to grow is just being ignorant. This isn’t politics, you don’t have to be all or nothing. We saw what he can be against NO. Lets not jump each others !@#$ for saying the guy can improve. Go Niners and viva Harbaugh!!!!

  20. Mountain Jack says:

Alex doesn’t deserve the Comeback Player of the Year award. He came back from terrible to mediocre and was like a puppet on Harbaugh’s string. 1 out of 13 on 3rd down in a clutch game indicates to me that he has a long long way to go. Hopefully, it won’t be on the 49ers. After spending 65 years watching quality QB play from Albert to Garcia, watching Alex is worse than watching paint dry.

    • Sean in Canada says:

The offense was 1 of 13, not AS. There were some runs in there that couldn’t convert a third down too. The concept of team is lost on some on this blog.

      • niner61 says:

Just the haters and the fantasy fools. Their football IQ might get to room temp on a cold day. LOL

      • Sean in Canada says:

Niner61, fantasy football has helped grow the popularity of the NFL but it doesn’t promote team success, which is why I’m not a fan of it. The only stat that matters is wins.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Sean

“There were some runs in there that couldn’t convert a third down too.”

The most important 3rd down was the 3rd and 1 on the Giants side of the field in the 4th quarter, and the Niners ran the ball with Dixon, and could not open a hole for him on 3rd and 1. So, if there is someting the Niners need to work on more, it is their short yardage running game.

Also, I believe that was the same drive where they punted the ball to the Giants. Then the Giants had to punt it back, and that was when KW let the ball hit his leg, resulting in the only 2nd half points in that game for the Giants.

So, maybe one puts the onus more on JH for not going for it on 4th down there. The Niners were dominating in that drive, and I really felt that they were going to score something. At least a FG. While most are angry at JH for leaving KW in the game, I am more upset with JH for not sensing that we were going to put that game away with that drive, and not going for it on 4th down.

    • 23jordan says:

      Mountain,

That is exactly what it is, watching paint dry. I taped every game we played this year and you have to fast forward all over everywhere to find good plays from Smith. He is as inconsistent as hell. On the other hand, those field goals from Akers, bombs from Andy Lee and brilliant defense are all over the tape. Watching Smith play just kills me at times. The man is gutless with the football. I don’t care if I don’t see another checkdown for my entire life!
Vernon had a great postseason but he cried like a baby at the halfwT point of the season because he wasn’t getting the ball either. Smith may have improved, but he still, for a player that’s been in the league for 7 years, has a long way to go.

      • Calistoga Red says:

Gutless? 4th down TD in Detroit? Two comeback TD’s against the Saints, including a laser shot to VD to win it?

Gutless is not the right word. Sure, safe and smart with the ball, but that’s the game Harbaugh preaches. That’s why AS is his guy…

      • niner61 says:

J23…”I don’t care if I don’t see another checkdown for my entire life!”
Guess you didn’t watch much of of Walsh’s teams. Tell me, how do explain Craig becoming the first RB to have a 1000/1000 yd season, guaranteed not from running post patterns all the time if any.
“Watching Smith play just kills me at times.”
If only we could put you out of your misery, atleast on this blog. LOL

      • DS94everXev says:

        @niner61

”I don’t care if I don’t see another checkdown for my entire life!”

Don’t need any more evidence than that to know that 23J is nor ever has been a Niner fan.

The WCO is all about checkdowns. BW viewed them as runs. Safe, highly effective ways of getting a good 3-5 yards every time. If the RB (RC) was good, he can break a tackle and get another few yards. Making it a 2nd and 2, where he could call anything he wants.

      • NickRow says:

        @Jordan
A common Alexcuse is when Alex sucks, it was a ‘team’ effort. But when Alex does well, it’s all his doing.

  21. Stan says:

Pre-season,I didnt think Alex would last past the third game of the season. He was CPOTY all the way..just more eastcoast bias.

    • DS94everXev says:

Nice to see somebody step up and admit that they were wrong about AS Stan.

      Bravo!

    • niner61 says:

Stan…Those awards mean nothing just like Justin’s slight. The important thing is Alex was considered for the award because he had a pretty good season for a coach killing bust of a QB. LOL! Now let’s see where year 2 under JH takes his progression. Quoting M Shanahan : I don’t care who your QB is you have to surround him with talent and give him a player friendly system. Well the Niners finally have that friendly system, now a little more surrounding talent is needed this off season. Can’t wait for HY2 (Harbaugh/Year 2).

  22. Neal says:

I just want to say what a honor it is to be quoted in this magnificent forum. Yes I have said the following. “Alex Smith throws the best worm burners in the NFl and also said “Yea he will get a contract but it’s like the last ugly girl at the dance, all of the pretty ones are gone, and only Alice is left.

Also, It has come to my attention after some investigating that the AS fan club cult LOVERS who the other day I saw in a little yellow school bus with special needs, I had followed them and the 5 or 6 of them, are staying in a assistant living facility, their caretakers told me they are all suffering and have mental challenges, and they continue to think and get confused that Joe Montana and one hit wonder Alex Smith is the same person, please let’s refrain from insulting them as they are in a fragile state of mind and are heavily medicated.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

It’s unfortunate that this once outstanding 9ers blog that was a good forum for debate, agree or disagree, has gone down hill thanks to you and others that think it is your 15 minutes of fame. Grant needs to take this blog back to focus on 9er football. BTW, there should be a limit to the 9er of times a person posts or an ignore button. Talk football…I don’t care about anyone’s mother, where they live, or anything else personal.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *number*

      • DS94everXev says:

I vote for an ignore button.

I know whose posts I don’t care for. I’ll use it.

      • 23jordan says:

        Hofer,

I sense that all of a sudden, you are starting to notice that more people like Neal, Jackhammer, and a few others aren’t exactly as sold on your boy Alex as you are. If you want to see insults, read one omers posts, primetime aka Michael crabtree, even ceadderman at times lobs insults. DS does it in a veiled way but now everyone is onto that garbage as well.

Last time I heard about someone’s mother, it came from oneniner. I will continue to return fire when I’m called names. If you’re becoming really uncomfortable, you can always join another blog. Alex will miss your support here.

      • Neal says:

Hofer, thanks you for the Andy Warhol recognition, again if we don’t agree with you and the AS CULT Lovers, we are bottom dwellers from this site, get a freakin life,if this sort of nonsense is really bothering you, their is help for you, really as DS said hit the ignore button, I do that in Facebook, see some one name and go right pass it, if you don’t like me who cares, I don’t need to agree with you and you can pass by me. I have noticed that some people that were bashing me , now are ignoring me and that is perfectly fine with me, ignore me unless you are just socially weak and can’t do it.

      • ribico says:

        >>you are starting to notice that more people like Neal, Jackhammer, and a few others aren’t exactly as sold on your boy Alex as you are.

No, there’s just a outsized number of them onboard right now, as the rest of the thoughtful posters have taken a break from all the slime slung at players and posters alike.

Enjoy the forum to trash Alex, it’s all yours.

      • niner61 says:

ribico… they’re in heaven now because there are no more 9er wins to stiffle their unhappiness with life and Smith. It’s so sad, sad sad….LOL

      • Neal says:

        ribico,

That is funny it appears to me and many others about the total love fest of AS Lovers on here and several other blogs, enough to make some of us hurl.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, you are out of touch. Most back JH and his plan which includes AS. JH’s system worked with AS at QB last year. You can continue to *only* focus on weaknesses while JH and staff will improve the offense which includes AS. There is no love or hate involved…just a great plan by the Coach of the Year!

      • Neal says:

Hoffer, I am out of touch, the AS lovers claim that AS is just as good as TB, DB, and AR, they are the ones out of touch, here is the problem with AS, he is like a soldier, the stars have to be alligned and GR has to call the best game of his life, I wished GR got the Penn state job, he was better then Jimmy Raye but he was incionsistent, if the call playing is great then we have a chance, if AS has to improvise we are doomed.

      • niner61 says:

My god Neal, you really should seek help for your hate! LOL
“the AS lovers claim that AS is just as good as TB, DB, and AR”.
Where did that come from???? Oneniner is the only possible source. Most of us Smithers are just watching the kid improve now that the obstacles are being removed that were thrown at him from day one. By the way, finally removing those obstacles actually improves the whole team too for whoever the QB is, apparently a novel concept to most of you haters. LOL!!!

      • ribico says:

        >>make some of us hurl

        You ain’t kidding.

Could you start directing your projectile vomit towards the porcelain throne and not the pages of this blog, mkay?

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Thanks for the thoughtful, insightful contribution.

  23. Neal says:

Looks like PM will be cut with the Colts on March 8 and that the Dolphins are going to go after him hard. Even if we want PM he is going to have a few teams that want him more.

  24. Jack Hammer says:

Hofer, not agreeing with your love of Alex Smith doesn’t mean we aren’t talking football or debating a topic. Actually the disagreement is what brings about debate.

It is funny how if you speak the truth about Smith that all of a sudden you are labeled a troll. Can’t have it both ways.

  25. Hoferfan67 says:

I’m not disagreeing with some of the AS criticisms, but I prefer to focus on the weakest position on this team which is WR. AS has earned his right to start and get better with his play and improvement in 2011. If JH thinks he can continue to improve the offense with AS at QB, then I’m on board. If he kicks AS to the curb for someone better, then I’m fine with that as long as the 9ers continue to win and make the playoffs, which is exactly what JH and staff accomplished with a great plan, system, and program in 2011. Add preseason work in 2012 (which was missing last year and affected the offense most) with new WR’s, this offense can only get better. If AS fails to continue to improve, then JH won’t hesitate to make a change (based on his MO).

FA is in March and the draft is in April – WR, DB, RB, and OL should be addressed. Stay tuned…

    • msclemons67 says:

Nice post Hofer. This offseason is going to be fun now that Baalke and Harbaugh have proven they know what they’re doing. I’m curious as to what surprises Baalke will pull out of his sleeve this year.

    • niner61 says:

Hof … can’t wait. Even if the Niner’s season had gone all the way thru today’s game, it still would have seemed way too short. More, more, more..it’s been way too long in between fun seasons…..LOL

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I don’t understand why the blog nastiness?!! If the NFL Coach of the Year calls AS his QB and wants him back, then why argue. Focus on other areas like WR, the draft, FA, ST, etc. After what JH and staff accomplished, there is no reason for multiple threads saying the same thing about AS – good or bad. The bad, yes he needs to improve, the good, he’s not that great but he is improving. Get over it and move on…

    • AES says:

Nice synopsis Hofe, the issues begin when one of us make a similar opinion.

But I believe that there is a small percentage who actually ‘hate’ on Alex.
A closer look at the posts regarding Alex will reveal that most of the ‘mudslinging’ has more to do with those who want everyone else to worship Alex as they do.

Sure, we could use a WR with breakaway speed and playmaking abilities. But the Alex supporters are to quick to blame our receivers for all of Alex’ shortcomings. That is where the issues begin.

The Alex supporters want Alex to become the ‘face’ of the team. Even after a 14-3 record, I truly can’t say that he is. Can you?

This years success was a conglomerate of many aspects of the team. But the Alex supporters want Alex to get all the credit.
No Hofe, you know me long enough to know I don’t hate Alex. You know I diligently supported Alex from the start. But the same people who say we should give our utmost support to our QB, are the same ones who throw other 49er players under the bus.

I have no Alex issues; it’s the Alex deifiers that bring this blog down, because they don’t want their Alex shrine exposed to any faults. I don’t like it either Hofe, and I try to take the high road, but I have every right to give my opinion just like you and others. When attacked I reserve the right to respond in kind. Sorry, if that’s what this blog has become. It is, what it is.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, there shouldn’t be any deifiers if backed by fact. In addition, if JH (who knows QB’s) want to continue to mentor AS, they who are we to argue with the Coach of the Year? lol

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof

I remember when JH was hired.

Everybody here said “In JH I trust.” Hater and AS believer alike.

Then once JH said he wanted to sign AS and give him another chance, the haters stopped saying “In JH I trust”. The AS believers contined to say “In JH I trust”.

        That is what happened.

      • Neal says:

I really believe the Lovers are AS are actually the haters as well, they hate to hear about the flaws of AS.

  26. MidWestNiner says:

The more disrespect that gets thrown at this team, the more hungry the players will get for the Lombardi Trophy. A full offseason is all it takes. And a #1 WR.

  27. FDM says:

Barrows writes that Alex accepted the COY honor for Harbaugh who was not present at the ceremony. I think this pretty much tells us what kind of relationship Alex has with the 49ers and what direction they are headed in together. Arrow still points up.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Yeah FDM.

JH still feels bad for AS.

Seriously though. Has that ever happened before? Where the FA QB of the HC of the year accepts the trophy? How many HC’s of the year even had FA QB’s?

At least part of the reason why JH had AS do that was so that AS would get some recognition from the national press. JH knows that without AS, he does not win HC of the year. Just as AS knows he is not in as good of a situation as he finds himself in without JH.

JH and AS are tied together. They both know it. They both need it. They both like it. They both want it.

No amount of stupid “Alice” comments on a blog is going to stop that. It’s like thinking that building a structure out of toothpicks will stop a 50 foot tsunami.

The haters are going to be caught in one which there is no escape.

  28. Stan says:

The black guy with glasses on ESPN who argues with Bayless? He said “Remember when they were calling him SHEli Manning?”..I never heard that. How about you?
Jeez, and you thought Alexis sounded harsh..

    • msclemons67 says:

NYC is a completely different world than California. Check out a Giants or Jets blog some time. Those people are brutal.

      • Neal says:

Exactly, I have been saying that for a long time, you check out Phili, New york or Chicago, my stuff is bubble gum, but the AS lovers are a very sensitive and its just ignorant that we are not fans because we are buying into AS and his flaws.

  29. Stan says:

I thought pizza-but I think I’m going Ballpark ‘dogs and guacamole with Lay’s chips. Heavy on the French’s mustard too!..

  30. Neal says:

I like my wieners boiled, they are very tasty and succuculent.

  31. AES says:

Making me hungry guys! I also love me some Hebrews National as well as Nathans hot-dogs (grilled only). Chicago style: onions, sliced tomato and slice of pickle.
Wow, time to fire-up the grill!

  32. AES says:

Agreed Hofe, but what ‘exactly’ are the facts. And are they indisputable?
What 14-3? Yes a fact, but can Alex take credit for all 14 wins? Disputable numbers.
Only 5 interception? Yes a fact, but how often does this offensive system ask him to gamble and make the ‘risk’ throw? Disputable numbers.

The deifiers don’t want to hear this. And they will bash on anyone who offers a differing opinion. Hence the ‘fireworks’ (lol).

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, is JH a deifier? He believes in AS and will continue to work with his as he molds this team as his. Thoughts?

    • DS94everXev says:

      AES

JH had to convince AS to come back.

JH was not remotely tied to AS. He wanted him on his team. And AS responded with 13-3, and an OT loss in the title game. As close as anybody has ever been to the Super Bowl.

  33. AES says:

C’mon Hofe, not a good attempt at sarcasm. Harbaugh himself made it clear that Alex would need to compete in camp this summer. Ok, we both know that Harbaugh is only giving a company line because Alex is our Starter next season.

But to answer your question; No, Harbaugh is not an Alex deifier. I’m willing to venture that he is about the TEAM (sorry, my attempt of sarcasm). Which is why he protected Crabtree when many media and fans were calling him a ‘diva’ at the beginning of the season. Harbaugh doesn’t deify any of players (ala B.Edwards), but he will insulate THEM across the board, which speaking of Harbaugh, we all should learn to do.

  34. AES says:

Wow DS, you are actually addressing me without the ‘hate’ moniker. Kind of refreshing for a change (lol).

Yes, Harbaugh did reach out to Alex, and I for one am glad he did. I said at the very outset of the season that of Alex was to become successful, it would make for a great story. And it has. But when fans (yes DS, you are a fan), make Alex out to be the only reason for this season’ success I have to disagree. No problem with Alex, just the deifiers who attribute all the credit to him.

    • Txtree49er says:

Give it a rest…At least until after the Super Bowl is over..then you two can go after each other as much as you want…though,it would be great if both would stop the stupitiy…

      • DS94everXev says:

        @txtree

What I said to AES was not intended as an attack from my end, I assure you.

        @AES

I have always said it was a team effort. Maybe you didn’t see the many times I wrote that the Niners go into every game having 2 out of 3 phases (defense and ST) advantage over any opponent.

I also don’t care for stats at all. Why? Because football is the ultimate team sport and numbes will never properly convey that. Wins determine winners. Not stats. To quote MS, “I want winners!” AS was a winner this year. This after having everything go against but 1 thing. A HC who can both help him and believes in him.

P.S. If you were wondering why I started replying to you, it is because the call for a truce which prime and ninermd called for a few weeks ago. Believe me or not. Up to you.

      • Txtree49er says:

And yet you have to continue.. Give it a rest at least until the end of the game. Then you can continue with this inane game of petty bickering.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

DS, you need a break. Why don’t you give it a week or two. There is no need for you to respond to 85%+ of every comment. Ok?

  35. AES says:

No attacks from either side Txtree. All’ calm dude.

  36. bbthekitty says:

    Alex did not deserve it.

They HAVE to get a quarterback who’s not afraid. Alex teases us with hints of what we want him to be and then he’s back to Alex 2010. The ONLY reason his pick total was so low was because of the play calling.

Alex is a bust. He should be allowed to leave. Bring in Josh Johnson and let’s get the offense going!

  37. AES says:

    Txtree,
DS and my response were both civil. Time for YOU to give it a rest, your starting to sound annoying bud.

    • Txtree49er says:

No more then the stupid bickering over the last 3 weeks.. It seems to me that giving it a rest for a couple of hours is not much to ask…

  38. AES says:

    Well, agreed Txtree. I’m down…

  39. ninermd says:

Grant… Better story for Smith.. Yes! Outplaying Stafford this year? No way. I do believe Smith should have won comeback player, but there is no way in hell he had a better season than MS.

    • bayareafanatic says:

      MD,
for a player to achieve a comeback award, they had to have come back from a big injury, or come back and played at a high level after previously achieving a high level.
I believe Smith didn’t win because he is not a candidate on either count.

      • jgwindsor says:

he got 7 votes so he was a candidate…as far as the letter of the award reads……… having those awful offensive schemes and his two shoulder surgeries was not enough to provide a spike in two opposing directions a requirement for the 30 minute society….not that i cared one way or another if he won the award……it is about the team and AS is about the team….whether he will continue his success run still needs to be seen…..i was hoping by the team winning the SB that AS would become a .500 QB….
