The Santa Rosa Press Democrat just posted my dad’s Monday column ranking the Bay Area sports franchises in order of current importance. He ranks the Niners No. 1, and I agree with him. Even though the Giants won the World Series just a year and a half ago, the Niners dominate the market right now. At the Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament, Jim Harbaugh was the star – not Matt Cain.
And by the way, what’s up with Alex Smith caddying for Harbaugh? Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo played, but Smith caddied? He wore a green apron/bib and carried Harbaugh’s clubs. Is that a good look? I don’t think Joe Montana or Steve Young would have done that for anyone.
Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. To read my dad’s column, click here.

@Grant
Is your dad calling the Niners the best team in the bay area, or just the one who is most important?
I see a difference between the two.
Sorry. I can’t read the article right now.
You’re correct Grant, it sets a bad precedent for any coach & player to have him caddie as though he’s your boy. The very idea of a caddie is a young pimple nose boy who runs around to carry your bags and fetch your balls (and I say that with emphasis) for you. You’d never see any other veteran q.b. put on that green jacket. But most important, you can’t tell anyone on that team that there’s no special treatment and that competition matters at every position. If your Kaepernick, Tolzien or any quality free agent you try and get out of Dodge.
@parkay,
Well said. I wonder what kind of signal that sends to rest of the team, especially CK and Tolzien.
By the way, Football is king in the Bay Area. Even though the Giants get 24/7 infomercial on KNBR for 7 months out of the year, football still rules and Niners are the most important franchise in California.
Northern California
JH must feel that Smith is head and shoulders ahead of those 2 guys. If that is the case, that is a sad state of affairs. It also means that I hope the Niners do offer Josh Johnson a deal.
>>JH must feel that Smith is head and shoulders ahead of those 2 guys. If that is the case, that is a sad state of affairs.
Let the trashing of Harbaugh commence.
@ribico
They really are caught in a Catch-22.
They cheered when JH was hired. And now with AS at the helm, the team nearly went to the Super Bowl.
So, how can they cheer for the savior HC who believes in AS whom they hate?
Yeah. Can’t get your way out of this one. Not without admitting you were wrong about AS. And there is near 0 liklihood that these same people have ever admitted to have been wrong at any time in their lives.
DS, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I suggested Grant do a column. It could even be titled “When Fans Hate Success…”
Relax, geez.
Harbaugh knows Smith is a big golf guy, and invited him along, just like he invited 2 of his assistants who are into golf to caddy for him on friday, then saturday. Too many people just have to grasp at any possible straw when it comes to Smith. Just let it go man, he’s our QB, and he’s pretty good. And he likes golf.
@Jordan
Going after Josh Johnson may be closer to reality than some think. Tampa has hired Jimmy Raye as their senior offensive assistant. If Johnson is smart, he’d buy a one way ticket out of town as soon as possible.
Nick,
Trust me bro. Jimmy Raye wasn’t in the NFL all these years because he didn’t have a clue. His offense here was limited because the QB was limited. Our offense averaged more per play last year than we did this year. Coaches design the offense around it’s pieces. Notice we still use a short yardage passing game. It’s because of the QB. Yes I know, the west coast offense is designed that way. Ours is even moreso limited with Smith.
In my opinion, not only does this look bad for JH and the organization, but it also looks bad for Alex. It makes him look like a “yes sir” choir boy.
Jordan,
part of Jimmy Raye’s lack of success was because of Alex’s limitations. It was also because he was running the offense that Singletary told him to run. When Ray was fired, he noted that he was only running what he was told to run.
His offensive sets were very predictable. He showed zero creativity. Any QB would have failed in that system. Put an average QB like Smith in that offense and it was doomed from the start.
Jimmy Raye – in addition to his own limitations – set himself up for failure by (1) accepting the offer from Singletary and (2) knowing Alex was going to be his QB. Bay is correct in his assessment of Raye. There were multiple reasons for his failure.
Don’t forget that old man Raye’s offense didn’t have audibles in it…..Alex couldn’t change the play at the line, ever. That’s kind of a big deal ya know?
Also, his lack of ability to make adjustments and get the play in time didn’t help…
Yeah.
The whole team would come to the line collectively and know the play was going to fail.
That is not going to help anybody’s confidence. AS, MC, FG, VD, any of the OL. Nobody.
Ah, Raye failed in SF due to Alex’s limitations. I see now, the old coach-killer Smith stuck again.
Great! Now let’s just get rid of AS, hire Raye back and watch this team SOAR!
@ribico:
Great! Now let’s just get rid of AS, hire Raye back and watch this team SOAR!
Too late, Tampa Bay already has snatched him up to be their senior offensive assistant. I guess we’ll just have to watch the Bucs’ offense soar.
To be fair, it wasn’t so much Jimmy Raye as it was Singletary. Singletary hired Raye as OC because Raye was the only candidate who agreed to implement Singletary’s offensive “vision.”
It’s called being humble. Something you or your dad would not understand. I have read many of you and your dad’s columns and it is obvious your dad doesn’t care much for anyone.
“It’s called being humble. Something you or your dad would not understand.”
Neither would you, or you wouldn’t have bothered to throw that insult out there.
No, just an observation about a very negative person. JH preaches being humble all the time to his players and it’s my opinion Lowell could learn a thing or two from JH as could Grant.
I love coach, but he is not exactly known for being humble…
@bigP
I’ve observed Harbaugh for 4 years as a head coach, and I do not recall anything he said or did that was arrogant.
He’s hyper-competitive (“What’s your deal?”), over-exuberant (the “Handshake”), and rather combative. He does not tolerate fools gladly (especially among reporters), which I love.
But I’d say that arrogance is different — it’s when one asserts their position as the best and says or does something to belittle some one else while reminding everyone that they are better than the one their are putting down. I’d be interested to learn what actions of Harbaugh makes him look arrogant to you.
Mood Indigo,
Please point out where I said he was arrogant. Lol.
…”but he is not exactly known for being humble…”
Strongly implies it.
Negative..or truthfull?..I vote truth.
When giving a choice you can be positive or negative, I choose positive unless you don’t like the guy, hence my first comment. Perhaps Lowell is just looking for attention because he is getting older and fading away. He picked the right person in JH but it may backfire on him.
Grant,
I wished your Dad ask your opinion on the Sharks, not including them in the column is flawed and incomplete and needs a big * Not even going to read it if it does not include the Sharks who sell out every freaking game.
Neal, I have to agree with you. Sharks should be mentioned and they should be ranked above both the GS Warriors and the Oakland A’s. If it wasn’t for Money Ball the A’s would hardly be worth mentioning these days.
Sharks are perennial contenders – no other Bay Area team has done that in recent history. The Niners and Giants are headed in the right direction, but the Sharks have been there for several times in the last few years. And who knows, perhaps this is the year they hoist the Stanley Cup.
@49erGirl,
I hope this is the year for the cup, although they didnot look good tonight against the Blues. Thanks for your comment, Grant would you put the Sharks as number three ahead of the Warriors and A’s?
If the Sharks were included they would have been below the Warriors and A’s in regard to significance anyway.
The Warriors’ “We Believe” team only one round in the playoffs, yet created more buzz in the bay than the Sharks have with any of their recent playoff runs. If they want to join the party the need to win a championship first.
I say all of this een though I am a Sharks fan. If and when the time comes that they finally get to the Cup Finals they will get their recognition.
I was fine with the Sharks not be mentioned. Hockey is a minor sport that might have 50,000 fans in the Bay Area.
@exgolfer
At some point every franchise but the Sharks have won a championship.
I am sure this was considered while writing the column.
Also the Sharks every year get closer and closer to getting a Cup and alway’s deep in the playoffs.
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a noise?
A corrolary: If a hockey team wins a Stanley Cup and nobody cares, did they really win a Stanley Cup?
Sorry, shouldn’t have written “nobody”. Should’ve written, “only around 20,000 season ticket holders care”.
No disrespect to hockey fans, but I’m sick and tired of hockey highlights clogging up Sports Center.
Imagine living in the heart of Toronto Maple Leaf country. We have a sports network called TSN (owned by ESPN, I believe). TSN has approximately 12-20 hours a day dedicated to hockey coverage. It’s ridiculous.
At least there is some time devoted to sports.
MTV in America has long since actually had shows devoted to music. It is all reality TV. Not that I much cared. But if you are going to gave a TV channel whose name indicates that it is going to show one thing, and it does not, then that is just disappointing.
I feel your pain, Augusin.
Probably somethin akin to what an expatriated Canadian would feel during football season.
The Sharks won’t win a cup with Joe Thornton leading the team. The guy is soft and in the playoffs when the games get difficult he disappears.
Classic, Sean! No sarcasm there ,right? LOL
Grant, I think Rodgers and Romo were invited to play some time ago, but not Smith, so the question of why he wasn’t invited to play would be for those running the tournament – especially since Smith is a better golfer than either of those two. Under the circumstances, I think carrying the coach’s bag shows Smith’s workmanlike and humble manner. The guy is easy to like. In his first year, right after receiving a multi-million dollar contract, Smith got a call from his agent telling him to get down to a studio to do a commercial for Adidas. Smith told him he couldn’t do it because he’d already committed to taking his group of foster kids bowling. I’ve been rooting for him to succeed ever since.
Bill: You point out an aspect of Alex Smith that seems to be omitted in some of the evaluations of him on this blog. He may be far from perfect, but he is a good guy to root for.
Smith was invited but could not participate due to previous commitments (this was posted in another article). Its due to those commitments that he just caddied on the only available day he had for the event.
Romo’s a scratch handicap. I think Smith’s an 8?
Okay, those of you who are butt-hurt over the Sharks need to understand that they’re playing fricking Hockey! It’s hockey for cryin’ out loud. Get a clue. This is California and they’re playing hockey!
@Bill,
Looks like you have never gone to a Shark’s game, but even though you don’t care for hockey it needs to be mentioned on the list, last time I checked hockey was sport and I believe it is the hardest sport to win a championship, you are playing from Sept – part of June and this is no wussy sport.
Neal, I’ve been to hockey games before, in the Northern Midwest and Canada. I realize it’s not for wussies. In fact during the last couple of games I saw, they actually stopped beating the crap out of each other and played a little hockey. No, I think Lowell Cohen understands that in the U.S., the popularity of hockey is simply nowhere near that off football, baseball and basketball. It just doesn’t have near the following or popular appeal of the three major American sports. Sharks fans are passionate, but very small in number compared to Niners, Giants, Raiders, Warriors and A’s fans. That’s where I think Cohen is coming from. Look at the television revenue, for example. It’s minuscule next to any of those teams.
JH said AS had prior commitments…I believe it was something to with his mom’s birthday or something. Now would you rather go play golf with all the stars or be home with your mother to celebrate something speical. Grant you need to get your facts and don’t diss AS…
By the way…I think AS did get invited to play…again Grant get your facts straight.
C’mon Grant, get your act together!!!!
What I heard was that AS would have played in the tournament but it was his mothers 60th surprise b’day party this weekend. Nothing wrong with AS caddying for JH. Not a big deal. I like that fact that AS is unassuming and not caught up in his ego like some other athletes. Not a bad thing…
Alex is a good man. Solid person and a solid teammate. However, a star Elite QB doesn’t caddie for anyone. He’s a pleaser that hasn’t arrived yet. A Jedi in training that hasn’t found the force yet.
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
Yoda, commenting on Alex’s inability to let it rip.
…and Bay being dumb leads to him to writing dumb comments….
Does it really matter if Alex was caddying for Harbaugh? LMAO. Seriously, who cares? How is that a negative? Ugghh, the offseason. Pretty funny though.
IMO, it makes him look like a ‘yes sir’ choir boy
Alex didn’t play because it was his mothers birthday, so he played wednesday, caddied thursday, and fulfilled the said obligation, which had been planned BEFORE he was invited to play the tournament
I see your point. I commend him for being a very good son and a very good caddie.
Man, you have it in for Alex, don’t you?
You’d be a good son to your Dad by proof-reading his articles.
Grant next year you will be burn. Don’t you get it…JH develops QBs. Not only will he make AS better next season, JH will shut the media up…mainly you and you will just have to stop writing in 49er country and go somewhere else and write your no-nonsense articles….
Okay guys Grant has his moments so leave the kid be.
Now if he’d stop stumpin for his pops and do some actual writing on the 49ers, I know there would be a lot of happy campers in 49erland.
Cohn Sr. made it on his own, I don’t think he needs any help from Cohn Jr. Unless Grant has something useful or contrary to add. ;)
Quite a gaffe, forgetting about the Sharks. Time for Lowell to retire and maybe we can begin to forget about him and his bad attitude toward everything in general.
Yeah,we all know life is nothing but positives, ask Adolph,Osama,Pol..Nixon..
Or Lowell…
Again, I’m guessing a pro like Lowell Cohen hasn’t “forgotten” about the Sharks. The Sharks are a hockey team and hockey has an insignificant following compared to football, baseball and basketball in the U.S. Now, if this were Canada, it would be a different story.
Adolph, Pol and Nixon? Not very current, Stan.
If JH gets 18 holes of painfully slow, pro-am golf, to discuss the finer points of his offense and being a quarterback in the nfl with his quarterback, then I’m more than ok with that.
Its called being humble and building a better relationship with the coach outside of football. Plus gives them more time to go over some football x and o’s. Pick his brain Alex.
Smith Caddied for Harbs for ONE day Grant. He had a prior engagement that interfered with him being present after Thursday. That’s why he wasn’t playing. ;)
Grant,
I can see why the press democrat doesnt allow you to write columns. You sound – and write – like youre 19. Now, could you tell me why they continue to post your fathers “work”?
Ok, that was a low-blow. But after reading another one of your awful blog posts, I couldnt help myself.
So please, Grant, dont compromise your work with your silly opinions like your fathers. Leave that to us – your readers. Didnt UCLA teach you anything?
Paul, I don’t want to be rude, but young Grant Cohen covers the Niners and blogs on sports for a bay area newspaper. Do you cover a major professional bay area team? Do you blog for a bay area newspaper? No? Okay then. Now, it may be true that Grant is where he is at least partly because of his Father, but showbiz and the media is full of nepotism. That’s just the way it is. At least Grant gave us some great inside stories on the Niners this year and I appreciate him for that.
@Paul
If you’re going to go for nut shots, you better make sure your premise is correct.
Grant has written articles for the Press Democrat.
Now, you may continue making an ass of yourself. Enjoy.
P.S. The last blog post about TB was quite well written
Wait a minute… Grant went to UCLA? As a Cal fan it is now my duty to hate Grant.
Sorry Grant, nothing personal. But you’re the enemy.
Hey Grant, why do you feel the need to always pimp your Dad’s articles? BTW, Vic Fangio caddied for JH at Pebble Beach. Does that make him “less of a man” because of it?
Ha. Maybe it should have been Kyle Willams as caddy for Harbaugh.
“Now, don’t drop those clubs, son.”
Alex as Harbaugh’s caddie? Awkward
Would CK or Tolzien or Justin Smith not have been as awkward?
Had MS still have been our HC, would it seem awkward to you if PW was the caddie?
Fact is, if a HC is choosing a player (is it the fact that the HC chose a player that is awkward?) to be their caddie, they are going to pick the one who they are most comfortable/spend the most time with.
For JH, that player is AS. For MS it was PW.
Besides, I think it is yet another clear indication that JH likes AS a lot. Both on a personal and professional level (meaning he believes AS can win him at least 1 Super Bowl).
…..nothing awkward about it….unless of course you have a messed up mind with messed up thoughts…….
Awkward to everyone other than the combo Alex9er fan.
It is all based on opinion, my opinion Grant, is that your
Dad many times writes these articles to get a reaction from
readers. The off centered picture gets the attention.
Facts, DS, facts. I can’t make a hypothetical assumption on what other players might have done. Unlike oneniners take, my thinking is that Alex lowered himself on this. This was not the stage in which to show his humility. Hence my awkward stance.
I don’t see how anybody lowered anybody here.
I don’t play golf, so I have no idea what the typical caddie-golfer relationship is supposed to be like. But, I remember a great deal being made of Tiger Woods when he fired his caddie. Supposedly the two were quite close for a long time. So, I figure that the normal relationship between golfer and caddie is a friendly one.
And, fact is, JH and AS are friends. You can see it in how they talk of one another. That AS’s relationship with this HC is a lot better and different than it was with his previous HC’s, and that has lead to the dramatic improvements AS has had under the tutelage of JH.
Is he also friends with Tolzien or any others he may cut. Sets a bad precedent no matter how you explain it… consensus that’s his boy. He has his picks. Favoritism.
Did you complain when MS kept talking about how great a player/man PW is?
We all have our favorites. HC’s are human too.
Grant, an idea for a column.
Harbaugh is obviously an advocate, even a fan of Alex’s, seeing potential in him that a lot of the “experts” obviously do not.
Given the controversial character AS has been and still is, igniting passionate denunciations – how much more of a leash will those same fans give Harbaugh before they turn on him as well?
How much time will it take before the cries of “were it not for Harbaugh, we could have had Peyton, Flynn, Johnson ! Or “what is that moron doing? Letting Tolzien and CK languish, while that caddie is our starter?”
Weeks? months? Training camp? Regular season? I assure you, it is coming.
What for ribico?
I mean look at this blog. It already is becoming that. No need for Grant to waste time on a subject which is unfolding.
I mean some on this blog can’t even try to meet others halfway.
I mention the obvious point that JH knows more about football, Niners and AS than anybody here, and they can’t admit it!
They really do think they know more than our HC! It’s sad that one thinks that. It really does belittle the things JH has done if a fan thinks that way.
So, it won’t be to hard for them to go after JH if the Niners los then, will it? The seeds are already there.
For those of you that thought DeSean Jackson would come cheap, WRONG. They just franchised him. Any more theories?
I have one. Neither Vincent Jackson or Dwayne Bowe will even consider coming to the Niners unless we grossly overpay. Gonna have to do it through the draft for a WR.
Bay, never thought there was any other way. Unfortunate but fact of life in the NFL. Home grown through the draft isn’t all bad just takes a while to get acclimated to the speed of the NFL and the nuances of an NFL offense. Maybe TB can do his magic.
..Bay you sound happy we won’t easily solve thois WR issue…….the HATE is really in you bro!!!!!
…..In other news the Bengals drafted a WR last yr A.J. Green
and he was very good…..he even made the pro bowl…
A.J. Green is a special player, those guys don’t come around that often. There might be some trade scenarios out there. They will add another piece this offseason for sure.
BigP that is what I was thinking. Trade for another teams number 3 or 4 that could start (or push JMorg) for the 9ers. Not a bad scenario. They could offer a 2nd or 3rd round pick depending on who it is…? Hmm.
Hofer,
I agree. I don’t see them overpaying for a FA, which is what almost always happens with FA’s. We’ve got a good thing going, no need to disrupt the chemistry, especially with Nate Clements type contracts! I still think that Crabs and Morgan would make a good due with VD as the deep threat. It will be interesting to see what they do, but I have confidence in them getting it done. It’s better to be talking about adding a piece to get to the SB then it is to be wondering what the team will look like when the lockout ends.
BigP and Hofer, thank you for bringing the WR discussion back to reality. I think we need to get a receiver through the draft and also look for a good bargain in FA. I think Early Doucet from AZ would fit in well as a slot guy. What do you guys think?
I’ve been saying all along that drafting a WR would be a better option than going after a big name free agent. The draft appears to be loaded at WR. Even in the mid rounds, there are intriguing prospects.
Oneniner,
Green is good because he has a good QB. You could tell by mid season that Dalton was the real deal. As a rookie he outplayed our QB who was in his 8th year. And he did it with a rookie WR.
As for hate oneniner, the most distasteful classless digs over the past year have come from none other than you. That’s as far as I’ll go with that since I usually try to ignore your posts.
Jack Hammer,
It’s funny that you mentioned ED because I was combing through the FA WR’s and his name stood out to me. My only concern is how much of his production was due to Larry Fitzgerald on the other side? There is no perfect solution. These guys wouldn’t be FA’s if there were no question marks. I still think Josh Morgan coming back will be pretty significant, he is an underrated player. I also looked into the 2013 FA WR’s to see if there were any contract year trade possibilities, I didn’t see much. Drafting is the way to go.
http://nfltraderumors.co/nfltr-features/2013-nfl-free-agents/
Big P, I agree with you that getting J Morgan back is going to be a big help. That being said, if we are able to re-sign him we would still only have 3 receivers under contract. One could be ED, and the other a rookie draft pick.
Absolutely.
“You could tell by mid season that Dalton was the real deal. As a rookie he outplayed our QB who was in his 8th year.” Bayareafanatic
Dalton’s Passer Rating = 80.4, just below average.
Smith’s Passer Rating = 90.7.
Dalton’s Adjusted yards Per Pass (gains minus 50 yards per pick) = 5.3 — average
Smith’s AYPP = 6.5
Dalton’s Playoff Passer Rating = 51.4
Smith’s Playoff Passer Rating = 101.0.
Dalton’s Playoff AYPP = 2.5
Smith’s Playoff AYPP = 7.3
You could tell by mid season that Dalton was the real deal. As a rookie he outplayed our QB who was in his 8th year.
It’s good to see that nothing has changed. Bay still makes up facts to support his untenable positions.
@drsgrosse: Nice take down, Doc. May I add that Smith was in his 7th year last season, not his 8th. Geez, Bay, you can’t get even the simplest facts right.
Man, this offseason is going to be unbearable.
Oops. I screwed up the html coding.
I’m a little rusty. Sorry.
One last important note there Dr.
Dalton looked bad in his playoff game losing it. What were his TD/Int compared to AS’s?
And if you want to be as fair about it as possible, we should compare the first game of each. It was AS’s first playoff game as well.
Dalton vs Hou: 27-42 257 0TD 3 INT
Smith vs NO: 24-42 299 3TD 0 INT
“Maybe TB can do his magic.”
Trade for LF. He’s a million times better than those other guys anyway without the baggage.
“Stupid is as stupid does.”
Forrest is smarter than you.
And my statement is true. He is way better.
“Momma always said you can’t water rocks.”
@Grant
Who is this double poster?
Forrest,
Hilarious!!
Maybe TB could also sign or trade for Drew Bree’s while he is at it.
Jack,
No, let’s trade Alex for Rodgers? After all, DS did say he stunk it up in the playoffs! Lol
How dumb is DS. Larry fitzgerarld contract. Just $15 million this year. Yeah we should trade for him. Someone pull the plug on this clowns computer!! Let’s trade him for Alex Smirh, straight up!
http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/9/17/2426206/nfl-salary-cap-contract-breakdown-larry-fitzgerald
“His base salaries are set at:
2011: $2M
2012: $5M
2013: $5M
2014: $12.75M
2015: $8M
2016: $15M
2017: $14.75M
2018: $14.75M”
Get a life 23J. Stop wasting other peoples. You are a drain on this blog.
Players negotiate their salaries all the time.
I don’t bother reading your BS. I can tell what you are going to say all the time.
Whatever subject I bring up and you reply, you sound like a fool discounting it. And, of course, you need to insult me.
DS, stands for Dumb schmuck, her knowledge of football, is a joke, yea right Larry Fitzgerald, why would a team in the same division, give us their best player, she is a sandwich short of a picnic. DS you are a drain on this blog, get a life, we all should be able to deduct you as a write off for our taxes, because you a charitable case.
He made over $20 million last year with his signing bonus, which is prorated over the length of the contract. Base salaries don’t mean anything. Combine that bonus with the other guarantees and his base salaries and it breaks down to almost $15 million a year over the course of the contract. Don’t let the facts get in the way of your stories DS!
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6880867/arizona-cardinals-re-sign-larry-fitzgerald-eight-years-120-million
@Neal,
I could use a few more tax deductions :)
Neal,
I think she is affected by all the preservatives and questionable additives in her allotment of government cheese.
http://www.motifake.com/image/demotivational-poster/1111/government-cheese-123-demotivational-posters-1320596699.jpg
@Nickrow,
Going to check with CPA, if we can add this clown as a deduction, if we actually met this girl in person, we would all die of natural causes instantly.
ahahahaha BIG P, that was pretty funny, what is up with her nonsense.
It’s a cry for attention, nothing more. If she was a child, I would feel sorry for her. She’s not, so I don’t. She is the perfect example of why it’s important to “measure twice, cut once.”
5 million base for 2013
Way to keep the facts straight guys. And cheers for acting like your age.
It’s called dreaming fellas
Of course that would take imagination instead of hate. And, you’re all so full of hate, there is no room in there for anything else.
Again, base salaries mean nothing. It’s about the cap figure. Know what your talking about!
His base salaries are set at:
2011: $2M
2012: $5M
2013: $5M
2014: $12.75M
2015: $8M
2016: $15M
2017: $14.75M
2018: $14.75M
His actual salary cap figure over those same years?
2011: $12M
2012: $13.25M
2013: $15.25M
2014: $15M
2015: $18.25M
2016: $15.25M
2017: $15M
2018: $15M
I’m sure we got the info from the same source, so it’s typical of you to leave the info out that would tell the truth.
http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/9/17/2426206/nfl-salary-cap-contract-breakdown-larry-fitzgerald
BigP, Let her stay in her dream world. I am sure that as part of that world her occupation is being Alex’s fluffer.
Incentives are easy to re-negotiate.
Plus, you’re leaving out a very key point.
To get those incentives, he has to play well. If he plays well, the Niners win the Super Bowl. He is much better than any of our current WR’s who were almost good enough to appear in the Super Bowl.
The base salary is harder to negotiate. But, rumor has it that the salary cap in 2 years will leap up by quite a bit, so the Niners could afford to pay LF his salary without cutting half the roster to do so. If this is not true, then AZ is not going to win anything.
I just put the facts out there and let the others form their own opinion. We copied and pasted the info from the exact same page, but she left out the cap number on purpose because in her twisted world that would make her correct. I know a manipulator when I deal with one. Fluffer…lol.
“Incentives are easy to re-negotiate.”
Again, we are not talking about incentives, we are talking about guarantees. An incentive is a monetary bonus triggered by reaching a preset performance mark. Example: $500,000 bonus for winning the SB. The only bonus money in Fitgerald’s contract is for participating in the offseason workout program, for which he receives $250,000 annually. Even if he doesn’t see the last three years of the deal, it will basically be a five year, $75 million contract. That breaks down to $15 million a year, regardless of his base salary.
Fluffer?
That is your job Big P
And, here is the actual wording between the two sets of numbers you conveniently left out. Seems to me that the idea of re-negotiating is not only possible but expected and probable. Also, he has to to be on the team all 8 years to get the kind of numbers you describe. And please read the paragraph all the way thru this time, reading the last couple of sentences. It explains the last 3 years are dummy years with no intent to actually pay that kind of money, just like the Niners did with Nate Clements and the Colts are doing with PM. :
“So if he does see the first 5 years of his deal, without restructuring, which isn’t guaranteed to happen, he would have seen $75.75M of the $128.5M. I assume the final 3 years could be dummy years, to make it look like his deal was even bigger than any deal given, similar to what the 49ers did with Nate Clements in 2007.
If he is on the team the entire 8 seasons, his salaries will be:
2011: $12M
2012: $13.25M
2013: $15.25M
2014: $15M
2015: $18.25M
2016: $15.25M
2017: $15M
2018: $15M
My own words.
“Even if he doesn’t see the last three years of the deal, it will basically be a five year, $75 million contract. That breaks down to $15 million a year, regardless of his base salary.”
I guess I didn’t forget to mention it, did I? You are on a roll today.
Here is an article that can explain it.
http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_15718872
Basically, the signing bonus is the only true guaanteed money.
But, most importantly, pay attention to the last paragraph of article.
“But if guaranteed money has been agreed to, it gets paid no matter where the player is. When a player is traded, his contract goes with him so his new team honors the deal the player signed with his former team unless it negotiates something different after the player arrives.”
So, everyone. The contract of LF, while a stumbling block is not impassable if the Niners chose to go this route. And, his current contract is not necessarily the one the Niners would have to be true too. They can negotiate a new one.
Of course AZ would not trade the guy away for nothing. But hof mentioned something about TB using his magic. So, this is possible. Just a matter on if/how much/who/what would have to be dealt.
I say trade away any single player and couple years of high draft picks (1′s and 2′s). With him, the Niners will be unstoppable.
Hey BigP
That contract started in 2011
So, it won’t be $75 million anymore. And, you just don’t read, or understand the part where it says re-negotiate is likely.
Besides, read the article link I gave you. Makes this whole discussion mean nothing. Any traded players can have their contract renegotiated and altered.
I’ve already schooled you on this matter, thank you!
DS,
For the 1000th time on this blog, younger in overbyour head. Fitzgerald gets an $8 million payment in mid March. Along with the $5.25 million alleged salary and the $250,000 workout bonus, that’s $13.5 million. But we know how sharp you are. You’ve somehow come to the conclusion that he’d only make $5 million this year. I just figured out your plan. We’ll wait for the Cardinald to pay him the $8 million ballon payment in march, then we trade for him. DS, my apologies, you are a genius!!! NOT.
I say we trade Patrick Willis for Larry straight up!! They won’t go for the Alex Smith move. That would be us giving up too much!!! You kill me son, I mean daughter, or whatever you are.
DS,
Guess who LF’s agent is?? The same agent who represents your favorite player on the Niners. Michael Crabtree. The same crabtree that missed half a season because of a contract holdout.
Yeah we can definitely trade for LF and get him to renegotiate his contract and play for $5 million a season. You are simply amazingly stupid!!! Not take a 30 day break from the blog. You’re killing us!!
Read the article.
If you are unable to read, find somebody who can, and have them read it to you.
The last paragraph in particular is all you or anybody else looking to trade a player from one team to another needs to know.
@DS,
It is time for you to try to get a real job, and stop living off the system, of using free computer’s at the library and using the homeless shelter and soup kitchen’s. Their are real people in need that need these resources and you are just a free loader to the system. Lastly do you go to bed each night and say to yourself. I am a nincompoop. I am a nincompoop, I am a nincompoop. We can get Larry Fitzgerald I know we can, in Jim Harbaugh we trust.
Where can I get one of these? This is awesome! Lol.
http://twittweb.com/i+give+knbr+s+paulie+ma-16216587
Awesome.
Lol, isn’t it though?
You would need a time machine to take you back to about 1988. That is around the time he got that shirt.
Go have one made.
Or, as an alternative, just grow up.
I guess as one grows old, they lose all sense of humor.
Seriously, what a wet rag! I thought it was hilarious.
That explains a lot BigP.
Check out that link to the article yet? The one where a players current contract can be reworked if the player is traded, so the new team is not held to having to fulfill the contract he received?
DS,
Notice how your cronies, or Followers have not latched on to your LF trade fantasy?? They know it’s stupid. Ribico, prime , oneniner, they aren’t even dumb enough to support a bone headed Kobe like this one. Only you DS, only DS!
23J
Notice how nobody cares about you? Just like in your non-blog life.
LMAO!!!!! Im an Oakland A’s fan. And I say this in a painful manner, but after reading your Dads column and the A’s being like the Homeless guy with a tux on next to an offramp, i spit my water out. That couldnt be more true. Its a shame what this once great franchise has come to. For them to trade the good young pitching talent they had this year was a slap in the face to me as an A’s fan. So for that. I will not WATCH or Attend one single game this year. And Im really on the cusp of giving this crapbag franchise up. I never thought I would bail out on any of my teams, but this move was on purpose so they can get out of Oakland. They should have went about it in another way. This Ownership is a Joke. Id take John and Denise over these cash greedy morons. As a matter of fact. Your Dad shouldnt even list them on this list. The A’s arent a Pro Team. They are a Minor league team with a MLB logo on their caps. Paaaaaathetic!
Lowell added the Sharks, I could live with it as number 4, as for me I would have it as number three, at least they were are ahead of the A’s and Warrior’s who have sucked for years, especially the Warriors who can’t even make the playoffs in the 21 century, big deal they won a championship back in the 1970′s. the A’s don’t really care how they are viewed, they had money ball success about 8 years ago and are irrelevant, hope they get out of Oakland soon and come down to San Jose.
The Sharks should still be behind the Warriors. The column was based on the organizations that get the most juice flowing in the area, and if the Warriors could at least put a winning product on the floor they would blow the Sharks to the back page.
Thats why they traded all of their talent. The old “poor us” crap with the league. They needed to be out of Oakland years ago, but not like this. Pathetic
They just signed some guy for a 4 year 36 mill contract, never heard of.
They have to spend a certeain amout of money, League rules. Its really pathetic. Maybe I should start being a Cubs fan. They always suck, but atleast they try, lol
Grant,
You’ve found the magic formula. Just mention Alex Smith in your blog and you’ll get people riled up. After reading the title, I thought this blog would be about your dad’s column, but you wisely snuck in Alex Smith and bam you get 100+ hits
Maybe that is true however another year that the Warriors won’t make the playoffs, and they have a difficulty in getting free agents, they are just a bad team, and nobody any good wants to go there, and they are just good enough, to never get a lottery pick. Sad state of affairs, just like the Who Song, The new Boss is the same as the old boss.
“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”-The Who
Not trying to be Mr Correct, But I love my Music
Seen the The Who about 20 times, sorry about that.
Man!
I missed the oscars, golden globes, and now the grammys….can anyone tell me who won the DON RICKLES award…? Was it 23Jordan…Bay…BigP, or Neal? I know that they were all up for it….
What is the Don Rickles Award?
The one who is wrong the most?
That would make you the winner DS!
Nope.
I said AR would not win the Super Bowl and the Pack would lose in the first round when all the people in the “know” around here gave them the trophy after 6 weeks.
The others….they fought about it. They said I was a loser, moron, social moron, etc.
I said that AS would have his contract renewed. Especially if the Niners go to the playoffs. The others..nope. They actually fought long and hard wishing the Niners lose to see AS go.
Need any more evidence? I got plenty more.
And, they don’t really have anything substantial on me. The things they said would happen, did not happen. More specifically, the things they disagreed with me on, and said would happen, never did.
Then, to top it off, they never stepped up and admitted it.
All they have are some quotes. Which they spend all day long finding, copying/pasting, bookmarking because that is all they have in their lives.
I stand corrected, how could I ever dream of putting the words winner and DS together in the same sentence.
Can you even talk football?
How many posts do you write to me that have nothing to do with football?
I bet over 90% of your posts are insulting others because you have all the football knowledge of the world at your fingertips. It’s just the screwed up “system” has kept you from becoming a NFL GM and HC.
What would you like to talk about? Obviously you haven’t been paying attention much lately.
I brought up receivers and how Crabtree compares to the top FA receivers yesterday, and you chose to go off on a tangent about Alex Smith for the umpteenth time.
I generally try to ignore your posts, so yeah, I don’t pay much attention.
See this thread and many others as to why. If you don’t get it, you never will.
Might want to work on your own “football knowledge”. WR and QB are not so far apart to be considered another tangent. If the WR does not get open, the QB is screwed. Don’t have to be an expert to figure that out.
And Drew Brees here would be furious. He would have no WR to throw the ball to. LF here can still get open. He does it for Kolb, Skelton, and that loser who they had last year. QB’s need playmakers to play well. WR’s can play well individually better than QB’s.
How come whenever I bring up the WR’s and their issues, one of you guys brings up the QB? It works two ways.
And, PS. The very first post I ever saw to you, you cussed me out. For a post about FG. Didn’t insult you or any other Niner player or blogger. So, you started out on very thin ice with me jack hammer
DS, I asked you for a topic that you would like to discuss, not a diatribe on all of the past posts.
Now, is there a topic that you would like to discuss. You name it, and I am game.
No cussing.
No insults
And, I’ll talk about anything as well.
AS(QB – options, expected outcomes, etc.)
MC (really WR – anything.
Free Agents who have your eye. Though I may not know a lof of the one you may bring up.
Niners DL, secondary (singing CR and DG, good or bad)
As long as you don’t insult or cuss me out, I am game with anybody.
I didn’t see any topic or question in there.
DS, why do you continue to rip Crabtree although he led the team in receiving yards last year and his numbers are very favorable when you compare him to the top FA WR’s and what their QB’s production was in 2011?
I gave you a ton of subjects to discuss.
And, you chose to ignore them, and come at me all attacking my stance on MC.
So, is this what we are going to discuss? I’m fine with it.
I missed it the first time, and MC was one of the topics you mentioned. I was not attacking you, just asking why you dislike MC so much.
Sorry about my post above. I didn’t read your reply very well. My bad. : – )
MC lead the team in yards.
Good. I’m not mad about that. Wish he would have had more at the right time. Wish he didn’t drop so many passes and wish AS had fewer balls batted at the line. Somehow, I figure that a lot of those passes were going to MC. I have no proof. Just a hunch.
When I watch LF, I see a WR who does not drop passes and who works hard every play. He never rips his teammates in the locker room, on the field or anyplace else. MC has said some things or had the body language at various times in his career where he did do those things.
And, I was willing to give him this one year to prove me wrong.
It started out bad. Another missed TC, and him wondering who the QB was going to be when it was clear to all, who it would be.
Then, MC starts, and it is nothing spectacular for awhile. Not too unlike last year. But the big difference this year was that AS did not force the throws into MC as he did last year (really thinking of MC in Seattle opening day last year) and they were picked off. That one Int in Seattle, MC didn’t bother trying to get the CB who intercepted the ball intended for him. He just kinda stood there. That play pissed me off more than any other in recent memory.
And, as the year went on, both AS and MC started looking better. Both individually and together. Although I would watch almost any other game and see spectacular catches being made by other teams WR’s (GB, NO, NY, etc) that really helped bail out a bad pass by the QB and help the team near the redzone.
Then towards the end of the season, in Seattle, the same place where the horrible play by MC occurred, the Niners needed to score to win the game. And, AS sees MC down the sideline and throws a perfect pass between 2 or 3 defenders. And MC went up and grabbed it. It was called the best pass of AS’s career. And I can’t see how it was not the best catch of MC’s career as well.
I went. “YES!” That is what we have been waiting for all this time! I was waiting and complaining about how we had no WR’s who can help AS out and make spectacular catches, and here was one. And with the playoffs just around the corner, this is the time for MC to get hot. Superbowl, here we come!
Then the playoffs begin, and MC looks great. Catches a few passes in the 1st quarter, getting separation, pushing guys off of him to gain the extra yard, everything a WCO WR needs to do. Even scoring a TD on a perfect strike by AS.
Then the 2nd quarter begins, and MC vanishes the rest of the game. As do pretty much all of our WR’s. And then the Niners need to come back to win it. So, AS leads the team down the field, and on a 3rd and long play, runs the ball in for a TD from like the 27 yard line or so.
And, I’m cheering, “Alex, Alex, Alex!”
Then our vaulted D gives up a TD, and we are down again. Needing another come from behind win and a TD at that.
So, I am sitting at home. Telling myself that this is the time for MC to emerge again. AS needs his playmakers to show up, and boy did they ever. Well VD did. And VD caught the TD to win the game on a perfect strike/catch.
But, MC had done nothing when the Niners needed him most. I would give him this one though. Maybe the game was so pressure driven, he just couldn’t handle it. Being his first playoff game of his life. Just as it was AS, VD and more. And they had all played near perfect. AS had 3 passing TD’s. 1 rushing TD, 0 Int’s (only a handful of QB’s had ever done that in a playoff game.) And AS out DB, DB.
And all the next week, I am writing post after post that this is the week for MC. He is going to show up big-time here. The Giants have a weak secondary, and they are going to have to double VD after the day he had. That means 1 on 1 all day for MC against a secondary and a CB who is not going to the Pro-bowl anytime soon. MC will eat him up and spit out the remains. Hell ya.
And the NFC title game starts, and AS finds VD for a TD, and I’m all cheering. And, saying “MC is going to get 1 on 1 from now on. I’m sure of it.”
And, MC did get 1 on 1. He just never did anything with it. AS threw it to VD 5 times that game. AS threw it to MC 5 times. But MC did not do anything at all. Mostly because MC did not leave a window for AS to throw into. MC had to get open, like all WR’s need to. MC didn’t
I stated before, that had MC been a good WR, he would have found a way to get a 1st down on his 1 reception he had near the endzone for a 1st down. Somehow, someway. He would have done it. That is what good players do. That is what we saw the Giants WR do in the Super Bowl. And if MC were all-world WR, he would have found a way into the endzone. I’ve seen LF do it a lot. Sometimes against us. Where he catches a ball, and somehow finds his way into the endzone, even though he had no business getting there.
Now, the pass from AS on MC’s one reception was not a great one. But neither was every pass from JM to JR. But, JR found a way to make the impossible possible a lot.
If MC had scored on that one play, all the rest of that game and the NO’s last 3 quarters would have been erased. I’d knocked VD a lot during the regular season, while praising and defending MC. But, VD made up for all that by playing well in the playoffs. MC made the most noise coming out of the tunnel. MC needed to show up those last few drives in regulation and OT. He needed to get open somehow, someway. And don’t tell me this BS that AS just didn’t throw it when he was open. The announcer for that game was a HOF QB in Aikman. And he had the birds eye view the whole game, and repeatedly said that the Niners WR’s just are not getting open. And that AS has nowhere to go with the ball.
At best, I see MC as a Dan Marino or Dan Fouts type WR. Can get some yards and look good in the regular season. But when facing the stiff competition one sees in the playoffs, just can’t hack it.
Every other playoff team had better WR’s than us. Not even remotely close. We need an upgrade here.
That answer your question about how I view MC?
And I don’t much care about stats at all. You’ll rarely see my posts refer to them. And most of the time when I do, it is about how they are not telling me anything I don’t already know anyway.
DS, You are joking about the 1 catch in the Championship game right? That was basically a throw away that he just happened to catch.
As for not catching the 4 other balls that he had thrown to him, it would have been difficult to catch most of those since they were on their second bounce when they got to him.
I will agree that he had a poor game vs NO after the TD catch. He killed the one drive at the end of the 1st half with those 2 drops.
I just find it interesting that you so often defend Smith by pointing to “the team” but are so quick to throw MC under the bus. Don’t you think that some of the trouble he had getting open during the NY game had to do with the fact that besides VD there was no one else that the Giants needed to focus on.
Getting J Morgan back, and bringing in a good FA WR should help that out and make it easier for him to get separation.
I don’t get the comparison thing you keep doing with LF. LF is the best receiver in the game right now, period. He will not be leaving Arizona any time soon so stop with the nonsense. It would be fun to debate the realistic possibilities with you on who they could bring in, however you yourself stated that you are not very familiar with the options.
I make that catch at least 5 out of 10 times.
The announcing crew, nor Grant or sfgate blog, or this one made any comment about that being a great catch Live as it happened. To my knowledge, only you think that was a great catch. No dive, jump, turning of the body in ways it was not meant to be, were necessary for that catch.
Your point that besides VD, the Giants had nobody to focus or worry about is my point about MC. Ray Ratto said after the press conference on CSN that the Giants bet that the Niners WR’s could not beat them. And, that they were right. The Niners WR’s did not beat them. The Niners WR core is lead by MC. And the leader did nothing. Note that Ray did not say AS could not beat them. And in fact AS almost did. Those big runs of his were key. As were both TD strikes to VD to the Niners position of almost winning the game. Without those plays, the Niners lose, and it ain’t close.
For much of the year, the OL was bad at pass protection. So, I excused the WR lack of getting open in part due to the OL not giving them (and AS)ntime to get open. For the most part I thought they did well. So, the excuse of the OL not giving AS a lot of time to find his WR’s can’t be made in this game. The fact that the WR’s did not get open lies expressly with them. Not the QB, or OL. The WR has to get open. If it is the job of throwing the WR open, then the QB should be given the WR’s pay as well.
Mind you AS had no accuracy issues with VD. And both TD’s were close to the sideline, so AS can throw that pass.
The point of the other 4 passes is that MC was not open in either. And he was unable to make the great catch anyway.
I do know enough about the WR FA (just not every other position) that not 1 of them gets my panties in a bunch just thinking of them.
As somebody mentioned, they all carry baggage. I agreed. Don’t go into a bidding war with any WR who the other team does not to resign or who has issues with others.
That is why I would rather have LF. None of the bad that those other guys bring, and all of the good plus a lot more. If we still had MC if we got LF, MC would see how a true #1 WR plays, conducts hmself on the sideline, after games, and more.
And I realize that the Niners likely will not have LF. But it is the offseason with nothing better to think about.
Why bother dreaming of having either of those FA WR’s, who, as you have pointed out, are not substantially better than what we have? Dream about the best and look for a way to get him here. I don’t want some other teams 3rd or 4th best. If he is better than MC, that would just be sad. To know that these “elite QB’s” have at least 2-3 guys better than what AS has had.
DS94everXev says: February 13, 2012 at 4:27 pm
“I make that catch at least 5 out of 10 times.”
I guess that maybe we should sign you instead of worrying about any FA’s.
We did have a problem with the WR problem all year long. J Morgan was hurt in week 5, and B Edwards was a complete waste, so the problem with how defenses were able to focus on only VD and MC was there all season. Fortunately they were able to make plays and help us beat the weaker teams, but against a good/hot team like the Giants we could not over come it.
Remember, in the regular season game against NY it was DW that was the leading receiver and took the pressure off. In the championship game, DW was coming back from the broken jaw and we didn’t have him in the game plan so heavily. And even when they did try to go to him the QB held onto the ball and was sacked. It has been much debated about whether he was open or not, I don’t know because I was watching it on TV and can tell you that there is son much of the game that is missed when watching on TV.
Again, what I find interesting DS, is how you want to rip MC and get rid of him when I thought that you were all about the team. Remember, don’t blame it on Alex, they win and lose as a “team”. You can’t have it both ways.
And by the way. For someone to try to call out what I know about football, and then turn around and say that they can’t discuss the FA WR’s because they don’t know enough about them shows that A) you don’t really know much about football, or B) you are too lazy to take the time to find out.
@ Oregoniner,
Don Rickles is so yesterday, how about Lisa Lampanelli instead, that is one dirty women.
Neal
I use Don Rickles because I am so yesterday. It’s not that Rickles was so dirty, my reference was because everything out of his mouth was an insult.
I remember Don Rickles, in those roasts with Dean Martin, well not live but I saw it on TV taped
DS,
That Smith pass to crabtree was a horrible pass. Especially since it was a 4 yard out. Thrown too damn high. When crabtree comes down, the db is hitting him at his knees. A solid tackle. Nobody was going to break that tackle. Leas crabs and give him a pass he can catch in stride and maybe he gets the 1st down. You Smithers are amazing. I’ll wIt to see if someone else agrees that Crabtree should have gotten 5 instead of 3 yards in that play. Alex tree a crappy pass and killed the play.
I wouldn’t mind the pay.
The idea being that any NFL WR should make that catch a minimum 9 out of 10. And a #1 10/10.
And I am about the team.
But when it was apparent to me, the Giants players, the announcers and many others that the Niners WR core is not up to snuff, then it is not being anti-team to say to get rid of somebody. And the leading WR gets most of the glory when things go well for the WR’s. And in balance, he gets the most blame when the WR’s vanish for 2 games.
You realize that the team the Niners will field a different team next year, compared to this year, right? That means some players who started this year won’t be here next year. Just like every other team.
And I am not mad at MC for 1 play. I am very forgiving of players who make mistakes. When everybody wanted to kick KW off the team, I said In JH/TB I trusted all year, and I will in regards to KW as well. I can easily see KW coming back here, or not. When everybody hated RC for the fumble, I defended him. When JR had that stupid fumble in the playoffs against the Giants (1986?) I stood up for him.
You realize that had AS and VD not found a way to win that NO game, that the goat would have been PW for not covering or tackling the TE? Does that mean I’d want PW kicked off? No. PW had been playing a great game and career. He just messed up on that 1 play.
That is different from MC’s case. There were a lot of plays where MC could have gotten open over the last 7 quarters +OT. He just didn’t. And I hope I don’t have to explain to you that MC career has been much more of a disappointment than PW.
DS, even the great JR dropped a pass every now and then. Guess that would make him a #2 in your book.
If they didn’t beat NO the goat would have been AS for failing to capitalize on all of the TO’s with points, not Patrick Willis.
Exorcising a dugout before a playoff series is trying? Plus have you seen who the A’s just signed to a four-year deal?
Brings back memories……
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d807430a9/Top-Ten-
Yes it does. I wish we had that problem now.
We’re going to try to get Cory Fleener. If we succeed, our coaching staff will develop him into another Vernon Davis – and that in pretty short order given Fleener’s and Harbaugh’s gifts. Then, Alex, who has done a good job of targeting Vernon, will have two near-unstoppable barrels to pull the trigger on. (And while defenses are trying to cover both Vernon and Cory, Crabtree will be sprinting down the sidelines deep, speeding across the middle for twenty and thirty yard receptions, and wreaking havoc among the linebackers for five, ten, and fifteen yard gains – oooh, I can just see it!)
Sounds interesting Max, however I would rather have Coby Fleener. His brother Cory is only a junior in high school and plays the trumpet in the band.
No, no, Jack. Start ‘em young, work ‘em into our system as soon as possible. And just think how much cap money we’d save drafting Fleener the Younger! LOL! Did I really get the name wrong? Haven’t bothered to look it up (though I did look up his stats at Stanford beforehand.). Anyway, thanks for the tactful and witty correction.
The Sharks would have to be last. I would rather read about a dog days A’s 90th loss then read about another Shark playoff. Every mention of the Sharks on Comcast is a channel changer. And as far as Lowell admitting he knows nothing about Hockey? So has Poole,so has Radnich, and I ‘m sure plenty of local media can have fine careers with no Hockey knowledge..that can’t be said about any other major sport. Telling huh?
Ray Ratto knows hockey, Tim K tries to know hockey but he is pretty bad. If you are old white guy’s, no chance, Grant knows hockey as well. I don’t know if he is still doing Comcast anymore. As far as me Hockey and the Sharks are number one, but like the Giants and Niner’s right behind.
When you march to the beat of a different drummer…you walk alone!..well,you and 18,000 hockey fans.
So Stan.
You’re post wasn’t quite clear enough. Do you hate hockey, or just can’t stand it’s presence on any local media?
I for one tune out whenever hockey is discussed. Not as good of skaters as figure skaters. Not as good of fighters as boxers. Not as entertaining to watch (the fights) as Pro Wrestlers.
I don’t like Hockey. It’s a ridiculous premise with fights for no reason and half the time you dont even see the puck hit the net…even replays show an invisible score.
And I wont even get into the part where its an “exlusive sport”..or names sound like a French restaurant’s menu.
Finally Stan and I agree on something. The best part of a hockey is when the Zamboni Machine comes out and smooths the ice. I have always been fascinated by how it does it.
Anyway, the Warriors are way more important than the Sharks. If the Sharks left the Bay Area who would notice or care? Now, if the Warriors left….. even as bad as they are people would take notice big time.
I’ve got some Tarot cards if you guys are really that desperate to try and make nothing out of something.
If I was better then my buddy at golf but he loved it or he wanted to be part of a huge tournament like Pebble Beach then I’d think it was pretty cool to invite them to be my caddy so they can participate in something that not just anyone can be a part of.
Alex as caddy? It was meant to be funny. And kinda was. So,I don’t think its more then that. He had a year too good for goofing off to be looked at as demeaning or worse.
Your dad does know the Sharks play in the Bay Area right? You can make the geographical argument all you want but there isn’t a person living in the Bay Area that doesn’t consider San Jose to be South Bay Area.
Not surprising that a guy who needs his son to help him get readership would alienate so many Bay Area sports readers.
If you actually looked at Lowell’s blog..he did a part deux, with Sharks included.
Should we include the Knicks now?
Thats why I could never write a blog..as soon as somebody ripped my father, mother or furry little dog, I would be all over them with obscene and well deserved retorts!
I would love to see Lowell do a column on the best play by play announcer and commentator’s in the Bay Area. Of course it would not include the Sharks, but it would take some real you know what to do a column, like that, although we know that Fitz is the worst play by play infomercial here. I liked Pappa so much better for the Warriors but not in love with the Raider’s play by play.
Neal,
I agree with you about Pappa over Fitz. Pappa was great, but he must have got to expensive or P.O. Cohan. But Jim Barnett is one of the best ‘color’ guys in the business.
And I’m tired of hearing how Fitz is a terrible host but great PBP. No he’s not. You notice how many times Barnett has to correct him? How many times Barnett has told him “That sounds like making excuses”. No quality PBP is ever told that.
Fitz is so good at making excuses for the Warriors that it seems to just come naturally for him. I guess he just forgets when he is doing PBP that he is doing PBP and not the radio host job.
Couldn’t agree more with you all. I don’t know a single Warriors fan that likes Fitz. Why does he still have that job?
Sad day in 9er land. Freddie Solomon passes away. We’ll never forget him…
Sad for sure. Have many great Freddie memories.
Very sad news. He was such a big part of the formation of what became a dynasty. RIP Freddie, you will be missed.
I would put the Sharks with Arena Football,Roller Derby and below Pee Wee Golf.
