Catching up with the 49ers

I got back from Mexico last night, and I was going to put this blog up as soon as I stepped inside the Cohn Zohn, but I was tired from all the travel, so my dad and my mom and my girlfriend and I drank a couple of bottles of wine instead – a 2007 Matanzas Creek Cabernet from Knights Valley in Sonoma, and a 2008 blend of Petite Sirah, Zinandel and Malbec by Tudal, which they call their Napa Valley Cuvée. They were hecka good.

Now, I want to get back in the 49er loop. Could you fill me in? Usually I fill you in, but I didn’t keep up with the news while I was down Mexico-way. My dad bought a USA Today one day but it was two days old and it didn’t report anything Niner-related.

I know the combine starts tomorrow, and I will cover that closely for you from the Cohn Zohn. But could you catch me up on the last week? Tell me what happened, major or minor, and your interpretation of what it means.

Thanks, I owe you one.

grant i hope you will look closely at the posts while you were gone. they were neither entertaining or informative. the hate speech has gotten out of controll. i think its your responsibilty to clean it up…..thanks

    • fesnyc says:

here here. Grant, you need to change the format of this blog to dis-incent the hate speech. The internet appears to be the most hateful place on earth; there’s no reason why the 49ers should be part of that.

    • f49er says:

      No Kidding Coach!

My God I was wondering why there was no New Subject Matter by Grant.

I kept coming back morning after morning with no new Titles but yet MORE posts on the last Article. Is that a record for the most posts (1,4610)?

      Complete Insanity!

  2. bbthekitty says:

Sadly, they’re still talking about Alex as the starting quarterback.

    • ribico says:

And double sadly, there is a vocal minority that doesn’t get that when they think they are insulting someone as a “smither” they are talking about Jim Harbaugh himself.

      • claude balls says:

        @ribico,

Yeah, but who takes those guys seriously?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Claude

        Sadly, they take themselves seriously.

You know, they “know” more about AS than his teammates and coaching staff know about the guy.

They are all waiting anxiously by their phones for Jed York to bring them into the organization so that they can share their immense knowledge to the team.

      • ribico says:

Claude, seriously or not, it sure takes up a lot of blogage one has to wade through. Of the 1000+ responses on the previous posting, easily 90% revolved around this settled issue.

I guess that’s a good thing for Grant if his PD masters go by sheer volume of blog hits.

      • NickRow says:

“it sure takes up a lot of blogage one has to wade through”

Exactly, you Smithers just posted 5 useless blog entries while whining about those critical of Alex Smith doing the same.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Nick,
they are gate keepers working pro bono.

    • ninerz says:

      I feel your pain kitty…

  3. Stan says:

Well,I was first in the country to catch ESPN using that “phrase” I’m sure I will be mentioning that on CohnZohn once or thirty times in the future…

    • ninermd says:

Totally overblown. What’s wrong with this country? If your talking about the chink in the armor phrase…. The writer has used that same analogy 100+ times in his articles. And now he’s fired. What a joke!

      • Stan says:

And-like he should be praised?..whats your point? You can speak for the Asian community as to whats offensive or NOT?
And dont comeback with common phrase malarky-it was a racist entendre. And finally..ESPN used it THREE times,on air,on the web,and on the radio. ALL innocent-sure. I never heard anybody say Beidrens has a chink in his armor…EVER..

      • ribico says:

When people are tired of having to hear slurs to describe their ethnicity, there is nothing wrong with the country.

      • Streetglide says:

NinerMD use Chink around Chinese and see what happens. Use Japs around a Japanese man and get ready to get a serious ass kicking. Use Gook around southern Asians and you will disappear in fish trap.

I HATE that language and I despise tools that use it. Living in Tokyo 20 made me that way i guess…

    • jgwindsor says:

      sensitivity is a slippery slope

      • Sethosaurus says:

Careful sir, when you say the word slope you are either a mathematician or a racist, there is no in between. I’ll be expecting a post of a college degree at some point to restore your honor.

      • jgwindsor says:

        i knew that
it goes to prove my point
        stop being so damn sensitive

    • ninermd says:

Look up the definition of that phrase…. It goes way back 1000′s of years. And since when has espn become known racist’s? And who in the hell are you to speak for the entire Asian race? I guess black folks can’t say ” he or she is the black sheep of the family” anymore either. Sensors hip that’s the ticket. Since you want sensors hip why don’t you quit posting some of the things you do. I’m offended! Get FN real. Pansy’s like you want something to *itch about.

Better not ever say “chink in the armor or that’s just “vanilla” or pot calling the kettle black” get real. And quit whining. Like I said…. The writer has used that phrase 100+ times in his articles. BEFORE Lin was playing.

      • claude balls says:

        @ninermd:

Are you really that thick? The headline read “Chink in the Armor” in an article about a Chinese-American player whose ethnicity has been the subject of much discussion. Moreover, the headline appeared immediately beneath a photo of the player.

Yes, the phrase has been around for 1000s of year and has a non-racist meaning. But there is no way you use that phrase to describe a Chinese-American player, or any aspect of his game, without immediately drawing a connection to the use of “chink” as a racial slur.

Maybe ESPN could do a story on two Puerto Rican brothers who do an especially good job cleaning the locker rooms at Madison Square Garden and use the headline: “Spic and Span: Carlos and Esteban Diaz make sure the Knicks’ locker room is always immaculate.”

This isn’t political correctness run amok. It’s just common sense.

      • claude balls says:

And by the way, the word you are looking for is “censorship.”

      • ribico says:

        >>I guess black folks can’t say ” he or she is the black sheep of the family”

Black folks can say whatever the hell they feel comfortable in talking about themselves. The trouble starts when non-blacks feel they are entitled to do the same. Or md, are you one those guys POed because you can’t go around using the n-word?

      • ninermd says:

Ribico I’m puerto rican I grew up around black folks my whole life and still have brothers of the African race to this day. Don’t talk to me about the N***A word. I know exactly who can and who can’t say it. Beat it! And claude….

And Claude for a guy who loves to bring up old posts and throw it in people’s faces look up how many times this writer has used that quote in his past. Race had nothing to do with it you clown. And I know how to spell. I’m on my phone and auto spell sometimes likes to do its own thing. Your so quick to jump on this man for a phrase he’s used for years, not knowing him or his intent at all. If it was someone like one niner or a skinhead or a known racist making these comments chances are they are racist remarks. Stay looking up old quotes claude. Without them your worthless. And of course your one of the do gooders on here that can’t let anyone have a negative opinion on smith. What a shock!

      • ninermd says:

And the spic and span joke. I’m puerto rican and never heard that one. I think it’s funny. But tell me claude. Where did you hear that joke? Mmhhmm. What’s Lin saying about this? I’m sure he would want to change an old saying that was referred to as damaged armor to change. He didn’t say any off the wall comment and inserted chink. I really feel sorry for the future. These kids will never know what’s its like to lose, be rejected, come up short, insults or anything in LIFE that makes you stronger. Pathetic! Now let’s all hug and hold hands and sing……. Because we all can change this world into one big love fest. WOW

      • bayareafanatic says:

Retired? I can’t retire. B!tchslapping fools on the internet is a full time job that will never be finished.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @claude

I find it very interesting that some here complain about how many posts others put up, while themselves ignoring how many posts they put up.

      • 49erGirl says:

I think MD has a point. Nobody knows this guy and the phrase in question is very common and has never, ever, been racist in nature. I’m sure that the writer is not stupid enough to post an intentional racist remark and think he could just get away with it.

For those of you condemning the guy, can you at least consider the possibility that he ran with that phrase because he was referring to the fact that the Knicks could be beaten? To a writer, some phrases are so common place that they usually don’t have to stop and think about how it might be taken completely out of context and twisted around to be a racial slur.

Also, writers don’t get to choose the pictures that run with their stories – their only job is to write the material. Someone else generally comes up with the photos and, in some cases, the story’s headline.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

Well, I can’t throw any stones on that subject. I post far too many comments on this site.

      • 49erGirl says:

“I find it very interesting that some here complain about how many posts others put up, while themselves ignoring how many posts they put up.”

DS, I would bet that if the PD had a way to run a query by IP address and tell us how many posts each user had in the last 4 or 5 months you would have the highest number of contributions….by a wide margin. If that same query could give us a character count by IP address and/or character count per post you’d win both of those as well – by an even wider margin.

      • claude balls says:

        @49erGirl:

can you at least consider the possibility that he ran with that phrase because he was referring to the fact that the Knicks could be beaten?

Of course he was referring to that. Do you think it was mere coincidence that he chose to express that idea using a phrase containing a term that is also a derogatory slur reserved for the Chinese? There are other ways to express that idea that don’t involve slurs.

To think that this was innocent, you have to ignore three things: (1) the Knicks recent run of success has been attributed to one player, Jeremy Lin, (2) Jeremy Lin is Chinese and much of the Lin-related discussion for the past 10 days has centered around his race, and (3) “chink” is a well-known slur against the Chinese.

To a writer, some phrases are so common place that they usually don’t have to stop and think about how it might be taken completely out of context and twisted around to be a racial slur

To a writer, words have meaning. When those words have multiple meanings, a good writer makes sure that his readers will understand the meaning he intends. The only way that a writer pens something about a Chinese player using a phrase containing the term “Chink” without understanding that his readers will make the connection to the racial slur is if that writer is too stupid or careless to stay employed.

Also, writers don’t get to choose the pictures that run with their stories – their only job is to write the material. Someone else generally comes up with the photos and, in some cases, the story’s headline.

The guy who got fired was the headline writer, not the author.

Look, I’m not particularly upset about what transpired. If you want that, talk to Stan. I just find it amazing that some people are actually trying to make the case that the headline is perfectly innocuous and that this wasn’t, at the very least, a stupid, racially insensitive thing to do.

Maybe the Press Democrat will pay for some therapy for you. You think of me way too much.

      • 49erGirl says:

Claude – I agree that it was insensitive and not a very bright choice of words. No argument there. I’m just not convinced that the intent was malicious. I’m open to the possibility that it was an innocent mistake.

I could be wrong about the whole thing…..but so could you.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        You guys,
Claude was civil for all about five minutes right around Christmas time. That Claude is gone. The dude is a chump. Some retired Lawyer that has nothing to do, so he is doing his pro bono defense of DS….
Claude knows nothing about football. My proof? All he does is retype what other folks say ( in italics, who knows what that’s all about ) and tries proving that he’s the cerebral voice in the room. I’m done with the guy……

      • claude balls says:

        @Bay:

Claude knows nothing about football. My proof? All he does is retype what other folks say ( in italics, who knows what that’s all about )

Wow, that’s really confusing you guys, isn’t it? Please allow me to explain.

Often, when I see a comment to which I want to respond (one of yours for example), others have already replied to it. As a result, my response will not immediately follow the comment to which I am responding. I therefore directly quote your words to make it clear which comment I am addressing. The use of italics is a simple way to distinguish your comment from my reply to it. It also allows me to break my often lengthy comments down into more manageable chunks.

I find it interesting that you are so focused on the form in which I post my comments and that you believe my use of that form somehow proves a lack of football knowledge.

You know how we can tell that you know nothing about football? By reading the substance of your comments.

Again, if you do not like my calling BS on your comments, stop writing BS comments. Stop with the factual misstatements, ridiculous assertions, and opinion passed off as established fact. And when you get called on those things, try to learn from it instead of huffing and puffing that those who disagree with you obviously don’t know as much as you about football,

      • claude balls says:

Oh, and spare me the moaning about civility. You can be and have been as uncivil as anyone on this board.

      • bayareafanatic says:

I love you Claudia. But you don’t know Jack about football. Now run away and go get a mannie peddie or whatever you do when you aren’t defending DS.

      • msclemons67 says:

Hrmm. I disagree rather strongly with Claude about Alex Smith but I wouldn’t say he lacks football knowledge. He’s pretty darned smart in my opinion.

And “Claudia”? Really? C’mon man. That’s 4th grade stuff.

      • Jack Hammer says:

@Bay, if you don’t like how Claude continually one ups you then take his advice and be more accurate. It is very simple to say I think or my opinion is so that he can’t prove your “facts” wrong.

      • NickRow says:

        @Bay
Don’t let Mr. Balls get under your skin. It’s easier just ignoring him. It’s obvious he needs attention. He’s just trolling all over this blog attempting to refute people who don’t agree with him.

      • ribico says:

        >>has never, ever, been racist in nature.

        Surely you are joking, NinerGirl.

      • ribico says:

        >>I know exactly who can and who can’t say it.

Then why is you don’t know who and who can’t say “chink”?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @claude

The haters are really stretching things with their attacks on your italics quotes of peoples comments.

If they were honest and impartial……………………………(sorry, had to laugh) then they would take note of how often they themselves quote others.

Especially my comments on this thread alone. 49erGirl quotes me a lot (she really likes me!). 23J and bigP always throw my quotes around. They must want to be like me as well.

But, as expected, they never call one another on it. So, just like the number of post issue, they just ignore when one of their own does something they accuse others of.

Desperate times for them call for desperate measures.

And I would like to know how you get italics anyway. I tried Ctrl+I and it does not work. It is a good method of yours.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

It’s html coding. Type (without the spaces) immediately in front of the text you want to italicize and (without the spaces) immediately after.

      • claude balls says:

Well that didn’t work. Let’s try again.

Type (without the underscores) in front of the text you want to italicize and (without the underscores) afterward to stop the italics.

      • claude balls says:

        Grumble, grumble, grumble. Last attempt.

less than sign-letter i-greater than sign to begin italics

less than sign-slash-letter i-greater than sign to end italics

      • claude balls says:

        @ninermd:

people feel a sense of entitlement and power and want to jump on anything with the slightest bit of controversy.

You are confusing me with Stan. He’s the one who was outraged by ESPN’s actions. I just responded to your kneejerk “what’s the big deal/your have to be looking for a problem to see one here/oversensitive pansies” dismissal of the story.

And I have no idea who you think has acted from a “sense of entitlement and power.”

Claude is the perfect example. All he does is research what was said in the past and dissect’s it. I’ve have yet to hear him talk football.

        Then you’re not paying attention.

      • 49erGirl says:

Question for those of you upset about the “chink in the armor” title. Had you heard that phrase used prior to this blow up?

      • claude balls says:

        @49erGirl:

        Yes. Why?

      • NickRow says:

        @DS
I’d explain to you how to use italic text, but I have a feeling you won’t understand it anyway.

      • 49erGirl says:

Because I can understand the uproar from people unfamiliar with the phrase – it’ be easy to disect it and come to the conclusion that it was a derrogatory remark. If you’ve heard it used in context on numerous occasions I was wondering why it was all of a sudden being construed and overanalyzed as a slam against Lin and anyone of Asian decent.

How many times have you heard “they found a chink in the armor of the defense” or something similar used in sports? I’m sure Lin isn’t the first Asian player involved with a team where that phrase has been used to describe the fact that another team found a weakness in their game plan. No federal cases were ever made about those instances.

Again, the caption with the picture wasn’t a brilliant move by any means, but an awful lot of assumptions are being made by complete strangers about the guy’s intentions when he put the two together. I mean, the if the guy really is a true racist then why did he marry an Asian woman…..??

      • claude balls says:

        @49erGirl:

I cannot believe that I have to explain this. It’s not the mere use of the phrase “chink in the armor” that is troubling. 99.99% of the time, the phrase is perfectly innocuous. I doubt many thinking people do not get upset at the mere use of the phrase. (Then again, rebelscum74′s recent comment suggests otherwise.) In the vast majority of the uses of the phrase, there is no reason to think of the slur because it is not relevant. Talking about a defensive or other weakness usually has nothing to do with Chinese people.

. . . except when you happen to be talking about Chinese people. Which is what happened here. ESPN used the phrase as the headline of an article discussing a Chinese-American player whose ethnicity has been the recent subject of significant media and fan attention. In that context, the other meaning of “chink, ” the slur, becomes obviously relevant. I simply do not see how the editor could write that headline, for a story about that player, place it under that photo and not make the connection. For me, it strains credulity to the breaking point to believe that he was oblivious to what he was doing.

I mean, the if the guy really is a true racist then why did he marry an Asian woman…..??

I think you are confusing two related, but separate stories. As I understand it, the ESPN reporter who used the phrase while interviewing Walt Frazier about Lin is the ESPN employee married to an Asian woman. He was not fired. He was suspended.

The ESPN employee who was fired was the guy who wrote and put up the “Chink in the Armor” headline on the website article. Underneath a photo Jeremy Lin. You can see it here:

        http://www.complex.com/sports/2012/02/espn-fires-the-employee-who-created-a-controversial-chink-in-the-armor-headline-about-jeremy-lin

As far as I know, he is not married to or even dating an Asian woman.

And stay out of it. I didn’t mention you at all. All you want to do is stir things up. You and Neal need to get together sometime.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        49erGirl,
feel my pain now? Italicized gibberish about nothing. Lets move on to sports. We live in a world of hypocrisy when it comes to tongue in cheek racism.
Every hear of a movie called White men can’t jump? Or he’s fast for a white guy? Or blacks can’t play QB because they can’t think fast enough? Or if you’re number is #11 you think too much therefore you can’t pull the trigger on throws?
We are beating this subject to death. I for one think they made too big of a deal about it. We need to learn to laugh at ourselves and not sweat the small stuff.
Trust me it’s not as bad as the Jimmy the Greek comment or the Howard Cosell comment….
        Jimmy’s comment,
“The black is a better athlete to begin with because he’s been bred to be that way — because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs. This goes back all the way to the Civil War when during the slave trading, the owner — the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid.”
Howard Cosell said this, and by the way did not get fired,
In 1983 Howard Cosell said, “Joe Gibbs wanted that kid, and that little monkey gets loose doesn’t he” when referring to Washington Redskins wide receiver Alvin Garrett after his sixth pass reception with 3:18 remaining in the first quarter during an ABC Monday Night Football (MNF) game on September 5th, 1983 between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins.
So when looking at these two comments, ” a chink in the armor” to me is not that big of a deal really.

      • 49erGirl says:

        Claude,

You don’t have to keep explaining it…I get where you’re coming from. I just don’t happen to agree with your logic.

You were correct on one aspect – I did have the two people confused in this story. However, regardless of which guy is married to an Asian woman, it doesn’t change how I feel about the subject.

It’d be like someone calling Randy Moss the black sheep of the NFL and then having everyone else insinuating the person saying it must have an agenda against black people. Whereas, in reality, the more likely scenario was the person who said it just meant Randy was an outcast and race actually had nothing to do with the initial comment, and the person saying it didn’t even think twice about the fact that it could be twisted that direction.

Like I said, I could be wrong about the whole thing and either guy could actually be a creep. But keep in mind you could also be wrong and are persecuting a couple people who may have made an innocent mistake.

      • 49erGirl says:

Wow, Bay – never knew that about Cosell or Jimmy. Those were horrible comments!!

It’s sad – people weren’t sensitive enough back then and now we seem to be overcompensating for it by making mountains out of molehills.

Can’t we just find a happy medium? (this is a rhetorical question…)

        Yes, I agree…back to sports :-)

      • claude balls says:

        @Bay

49erGirl, feel my pain now? Italicized gibberish about nothing.

FYI, the italicized parts of the comment are 49erGirl’s words. But 49erGirl seems to be pretty forgiving towards you, so I am sure she will not hold it against you.

49erGirl asked a thoughtful question, and I gave her what I think was a thoughtful response. What part of that is painful to you? The “thoughtful” part?

Lets move on to sports. … [several paragraphs about racist comments from the 1980s]

I’ll bet you don’t see the irony in that sequence.

Regarding Howard Cosell: Would it change your view of his comment if he was on the record, prior to that MNF game, referring to a smaller white player as a little monkey? Because he was.

Cosell probably avoided being fired for his comment because he had an established track record supporting black athletes during the 60s and 70s. In any case, he left the MNF booth after the 1983 season. I doubt it was completely unrelated to the comment.

        @49erGirl:

Fair enough. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

As for your Randy Moss analogy, “black” isn’t a racial slur, at least as far as I know. “Chink” is.

And I’m not persecuting anyone. ESPN fired the guy. I didn’t. I didn’t even ask for his dismissal. I have merely responded to the people who have characterized the story as a gross overreaction to a comment that no one could reasonably take offense to.

Finally, this does not have to be a choice between “the headline writer is a hateful racist creep” or “he is a wrongly-persecuted innocent.” The world is rarely so black and white like that. It’s almost always grey.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to stop writing about this now. I have exhausted even my patience.

        >>md’s historical comparisons.

Remember who we are dealing with here. Disney. They will go completely out of their way to avoid even slightest smidgeon of controversy. They learned their lesson the hard way when the Limbaugh – Donovon McNabb flap open a racial can of worms. (though why they expected otherwise when they hired Rush in the first place is completely beyond me). Thats why the ESPN guys are gone and the MSG guy is still broadcasting.

      • ribico says:

sorry. bay’s historical comparisons. You two are uncannily alike in areas beyond AS as well.

      • ninermd says:

Lol ribico is so frazzled he can’t tell who from whom. A little eager this morning aren’t we? I’m not going to sit here and argue with a racist. Have a blast in your hateful world coward!

    • drsgrosse says:

Than you. I asked 4 Asian co workers today if they heard about this. 3 said they have and didnt think twice about it. I know it’s only 4, but you have to be a whiny pathetic person to get upset about this. Some have control issues.

      • fesnyc says:

        Ninermd,

i’m old enough to have grown up and have been called “chink” (altho i’m not chinese, i’m part asian) in a way in which the hate came spewing off of it like the heat off Tim Lincecum’s fastball. If you grew up in my town, back in my era, then it had the same effect as “nigger”. and i got in plenty of fights because racist scum just wanted to make trouble. no problem, someone wants to fight, they’re going to get a fight. so dont tell me that sensitivity to the word “chink” is oversensitivity.

besides, what in the hell are you or anyone else doing talking about Lin and “chink” on a Niners website? just looking for a fight? no problem, step right up.

      • niner md says:

hey fes…….talk to your boy stan. he’s been talking about Lin on here like this is the NY Democrat. And he brought it up. I cant help but think you guys carry some white guilt. IDK and dont care. The man who wrote the article didnt mean it in that way. I believe it takes a racist mind to think about his quote in that way.I have close friends that I hang out with weekly that are mexican, black, white, asian, and indian. We crack jokes with each other at times. Because we know each other, and we know there is no hate. Thats me and my group of friends. Is calling him Linsanity to sensitive for the mentally insane? Why wouldnt it be? You dont even know this man personally. And yet you all judge him. Round of applause for the Gods of the world. Pathetic

      • fesnyc says:

wow NinerMd, you’re a veritable United Nations all by yourself. thankfully we have guys like you to keep all the races happy, however you do that. i would never judge anyone who is so obviously…giving…as yourself.

      • claude balls says:

        @ninermd:

The man who wrote the article didnt mean it in that way.

Really? You think it never occurred to him that using “chink” in a headline about Lin was a bad idea? Really? Even though there are other ways to express the idea that a weakness in Lin’s game had been found, ones that in no way involve a racial slur? If it did not occur to him, then that guy is too stupid to work for ESPN, which is saying something.

I believe it takes a racist mind to think about his quote in that way.

No, it just takes a mind that, you know, actually thinks.

I have close friends that I hang out with weekly that are mexican, black, white, asian, and indian. We crack jokes with each other at times. Because we know each other, and we know there is no hate. Thats me and my group of friends.

That’s what friends do. That’s not what “news” organizations are supposed to do. Do you really not see the difference?

        Pathetic

You don’t have to label your comments like that. We can reach our own conclusions.

      • msclemons67 says:

After listening to that editor I don’t believe he meant the headline to be malicious. He seems to be genuinely remorseful and I think his wife would kick his ass if he meant it the way it sounded.

But like I said people feel a sense of entitlement and power and want to jump on anything with the slightest bit of controversy. Claude is the perfect example. All he does is research what was said in the past and dissect’s it. I’ve have yet to hear him talk football.

And fes…… Knock me for knowing different cultures. Not my fault I’m socially able. Nice retort by the way. Like others on here you leave the point alone and run somewhere else. $hit I’m still waiting for an answer on why Grant was wrong on smiths weaknesses and strengths.

        Hi FesNyc-

I am 42 and spent most of my life thinking the phrase “chinc in the armour” was a weaknes in something like armour in the medevil days never thinking it was a racist or insulting remark. One of my best friends is mong and we work together. He is very open and we joke about lots of things and is very good natured,We discussed this issue a few months ago, He finds these comments asracist and hurtuful, Mind you some one that does not get insulted or hurt easily, But with his feelings in mind, I have promised my self not to use that phrase. It appears every one interprets things differently. Good to be educated at times because their are diffently remarks that I do not like to be called.

      • fesnyc says:

thanks Rebelscum, i really appreciate you chiming in…which is kind of funny, and a reminder to us all, that a fellow with the handle “rebelscum” can be one of the most openminded among us!

sadly, we find time and again that racist bullying has to be confronted immediately – which admittedly can lead to overreactions – because when not confronted, bullies have a tendency to go further. in the extreme, its called genocide. Never again.

and with that, i’ll leave one of my emails in case Ninermd ever wants to connect in person, whether its via handshake or something not quite as friendly. grant.jones67@yahoo.com will suffice.

Respect my outlook or beat it. Understand?

And onelame…. That was pathetic! Hard for a loser like yourself to imagine others having a lot of good friends with different cultures. Hmmmm since I’m puerto rican. A little welch and native.. I wonder who I’m racist against. Pathetic!

Great, welcome back Grant. We now get a new blog thread and clean slate.

  5. Faithful says:

Haven’t heard any news directly relating other then the Pres trying to catch a little VD while he was in town. On the indirect side Carlos Rogers just became a little bit more expensive to re-sign and the talk of us making a move to go after Mike Wallace is beginning to heat up as it becomes more and more clear that the Steelers simply cant afford to keep him.

    • jgwindsor says:

wallace thing is doubtful….too much money too much of a draft pick loss…..

      • claude balls says:

        @jgwindsor:

I do not know what kind of salary Wallace will command, but giving up the 30th pick in round 1 doesn’t seem to be out of line. Assuming that the 49ers would consider using the 30th pick on a WR, Wallace is more of a sure thing than any receiver they could select with that pick. Hell, he’s more of a sure thing than any WR in the draft.

      • msclemons67 says:

I’m with Claude – Wallace would be more a sure thing than any player drafted at #30 *cough*Rashaun Woods*cough*.

The money could be an issue though if a bidding war heats up.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I don’t see them going after Wallace because of the cap hit they would need to take. Reports are that he will command 10m+, and that would severely cut into the space available to re-sign our own guys and the draft picks.

I think we would be better served getting 2 guys for that price, such as Colston or Meachum along with a middle round pick like Marvin Jones from Cal.

      • Faithful says:

Colston isn’t signing for cheap regardless of his age or even sketchy health history so you can forget getting him PLUS another player but Colston by himself if he could stay healthy would be awesome!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Faithful, the average salary for a 3rd round pick in 2011 was about 700k, so if they sign Colston for say 8 or 9m, they could still draft jones in the 3rd and get the 2 players I mentioned.

      • jgwindsor says:

agree with the point if going for a WR with first pick …. get a proven commodity…..yep the wallace price tag on a TE-RB centric offense would seem out of balance with the JH scheme

would be nice to have that mirror that lists all the FA WR and the monies they would command…..want an efficient offense (i.e. move the chains…score in redzone) and wallace’s top side defense stretcher may not be the answer to efficiency….

i am still looking at the steve johnson type to match up well in JH offense scheme

well we have had beach like weather here at times……

really no news per sey except freddie solomon passing and funeral…..

think we are all awaiting march 8 ….. do we can get this peyton drama thing out of the way…….

and for the most part it has been opining about various FA WR…..mine like is steve johnson out of buffalo…others have made cases for meachem, wallace and others

also some kept abreast of FA CB, and RB……

i would say combine work is well not a fruitless endeavor since the participants train to excel at them…..so maybe a collage of their combine feats and their actual football plays would be a fair and balance report….

  11. Paul says:

Do you get paid to write this crap?

  12. Dad Gum says:

Free Agency CB is getting more complicated. Rogers versus a run at Brandon Carr? Carr is younger and rated really high. Depends on how much Rogers will stand for in pay and how Coach sees the back-ups we have. Rogers was great last year, but a long-term deal? I would back load any more than a two year deal.

    • DS94everXev says:

JH and TB have made it very clear that they are going to sign their own guys first. I have to believe they included CR who also made it clear at midseason that he wants to stay here.

I don’t see them going after another FA CB unless TB is unable to meet the demands of CR. And, I don’t see CR being unreasonable to the point of not wanting to stay here and getting caught up in his salary. The guy has had plenty of years of losing, and wants to stay with a winner.

    • claude balls says:

      @Dad Gum:

I hear what you are saying, but, Rogers played very, very well last year, and has shown no signs of aging/slowing down. How much more would you be willing to pay Carr over Rogers?

      • jgwindsor says:

except rogers didn’t cover cruz very well….so is he exposed ……yes i have always had issues with carlos that i pointed out early in the season……he does not have make up speed to go make a tackle….

      • claude balls says:

        @jgwindsor:

Wow, you and I are watching two different guys, then.

      • Dad Gum says:

Not so much more, but longer. Depends on what CR thinks is reasonable and what coaches think of Carr.

      • NickRow says:

        JGWindsor
“except rogers didn’t cover cruz very well
Didn’t Rodgers shut down Cruz in the 2nd half?

      • Jack Hammer says:

My worry about bringing Rogers back is that he is older, and the last thing the 49ers need to do is give him his payday and then watch him turn into Aubrey Huff.

Carr is younger and would be a more long term solution possibly.

      • jgwindsor says:

i get it….i kind of stand alone on this assessment…. most of it was predicated on what i saw early in the season with the amount of distance between him and the man he was covering at the point where his assignment was touching the ball and then from my view perceived followup effort to try recover to make a play, like he didn’t want to stick his nose in there….so initially, even though he was getting a couple of interceptions at critical times i didn’t like his overall game…..as the season progressed i didn’t see as blatant of miscues so i chalked it up to learning and working within the defensive scheme….so i quieted down….but even after his nice pro-bowl season i still wasn’t enamored with him….

there are a lot of issues in the secondary and OLB crew to address so to overpay a carlos may be detrimental if he doesn’t provide at least the same impact he did this year interception wise….since it could be possible this past season to be an anomaly….

of course it is not my call …..

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jg

Give the guy some leeway here. He was a FA coming onto a team with a whole new coaching staff, and the only holdover from the previous years starters was a guy (DG) who made it very clear during the off-season that he was done here in SF.

You need to allow some learning curve. If Carr were brought in to replace him, he would have to learn a new defense as well. Why can’t we just get some continuity going out there?

And, he didn’t “lose” any games for the Niners at the start of the year either. Nor did the opponents take advantage of CR either.

Its the haters that have made this blog go south with throwing out Alex critisism every chance they get on an unrelated thread! Wake up girl!

  14. old coach says:

the only opinion of AS that counts is JH’s opinion.

    • DS94everXev says:

I wouldn’t say that old coach

AS’s teammates also need to (and always have) believe in him as well. If the team revolted against it’s starting QB, the HC would have to do something about it.

And although it seems like TB has the final say on personnel, I think the exception may be QB. TB will go with whomever JH wants. If not, then I don’t think he would have signed AS last year. TB strongly implied that AS was not going to be the starting QB, or on the team.

  15. NickRow says:

If we lose Ahmad Brooks (which in my opinion would be bad), at least there are viable options in the draft for these so-called ‘hybrid linebackers’ – players who can not only rush the passer but also drop into coverage.

Here’s an interesting article by Bucky Brooks of NFL.com on this topci:

  16. old coach says:

i dont think the niners are going to sign any big name fa’s. they are going with the patriot model , its better and cheaper to sign 2 b level fa’s than 1 a level fa and its always better to sign your own

    • DS94everXev says:

      You could be right.

But, if there was ever a time to take the shot at a big FA/trade it would be right now.

Niners are $40 million under the cap after expected players are dropped, and they were an OT loss away from the Super Bowl.

If the NFL raises the salary cap a lot for next year, then the Niners could offer big money for any FA this coming season and in 2013.

    • ninermd says:

I dont agree coach….. The 49ers have thrown their name in a hat for big free agents the last couple of years… Nnamdi, HAsselbeck, Warner, and who knows what other ones. Receiver will be the free agent splash.

      • Jack Hammer says:

ninermd, Did they sign any of them though? There is a difference between kicking the tires and actually buying.

      • ninermd says:

Jack…. That’s not the point. If I understood coaches opinion he thinks they will go cheap. Since the franchise has relevance again. I can’t see a big name not wanting to play here unlike the past 10 years.

;p Sorry, couldn’t resist! All kidding aside, I think you might be on to something, Coach.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        49ergirl,
now you are just being a hater. Chilo has had a different offensive coordinator every year since he’s been here. He’s played hurt too and Singletary didn’t know how to talk to him. Give him two years under Harbaugh and a talented running back and a better supporting cast on the O-line and you’ll see how he improves. We went 13-3 with him. He’s elite and should have been a pro bowler…

    • ninermd says:

“Rachelers” doesn’t have quite the zing as “Smithers”. But whatever, you funnay guys.

      • ninermd says:

Call us chilos then. Buajahahaahaha <—— the j is for the Spanish in me. :-)

      • 49erGirl says:

Would that make Crabtree supporters “Crabbies”? That one has a great ring to it, LOL!

      • msclemons67 says:

Hrmm.. I think a “Rachaler” would be referred to as a Matador. Olé!

      • ribico says:

md, don’t you have some floors to sweep along with the rest of the pr spics?

        What. What did I say????

      • ninermd says:

See rib….. It’s obvious you can’t separate an old saying to a flat out racist remark. The spic and span joke that claude posted was funny. Yours has no bite or pun. It’s just flat out racist. Must make you feel big. Oh well this is the cowardly world we live in now. Computer tough guys. It’s feel good to sit back and watch people make asses of themselves. Good job Rib

      • ribico says:

        >>It’s just flat out racist.

        Yes, it was. Good job!

That’s the point, MD. It seems you are very selective in your recognition of racist terms. As long as it refers to the “other guy”, right md?

  21. waterman says:

What about Morris? FB I think most agree on him.

  22. Dad Gum says:

Grant, how about a separate blog for Alex discussions?

  23. Neal says:

The Niners will probably do the same as they did last year which worked out well, a second tier of free agentsm maybe their is a diamond in the ruff and getting a good receiver from the draft. If Wallace changes teams and it is not the Niners, I hope he stays in the AFC for obvious reasons.

  24. INJHWeTrust says:

Funny, I thought you got paid to inform us on Niners news, seeing as how many of us have jobs that have nothing to do with them. It’s ironic that you title this article “catching up with the 49ers” shouldn’t it be, “I was on vacation with my Mommy and Daddy, and didn’t keep up with my own job, so as a placeholder I posted this useless article about myself that no one gives a damn about”.

  25. LSX says:

Grant, you didn’t miss anything. Salary cap talk, free agent and draft speculation, Shawntae Spencer requested a trade (LOL) and Freddie died (RIP). Yada yada yada. Your last topic ended up a thousand comments of BS. For a minute I had some nice conversation with claude, hofer, ninermd, ribico, etc. But that didn’t last long. I stopped reading well before it hit 1,000 comments. Some people just love to hear themselves talk (or in this case I suppose it would be ‘see themselves write’).

  26. Neal says:

I hope this is not the case but the Niners have had no salary talk with Rachel and Snyder and this report believes with their first pick they will pick up a guard.http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1071854-2012-nfl-mock-draft-pick-by-pick-analysis-for-all-32-teams/page/31

    • old coach says:

it would’nt scock me if the niners picked up a guard. snyder was a huge step up over rachal but was still pretty medicre. i thought maybe they liked kilgore

    • NickRow says:

      Neal,
Thanks for sharing the link. It will be disappointing if the Niners pick an O-linemen in the 1st round. We have other pressing needs. I’m not too concerned about the current situation at guard. It won’t surprise me if Snyder is back and they draft somebody in the mid rounds. Rishaw Johnson (Senior, Cal, 6-4 309) may be a good pick in the mid rounds.

      • NickRow says:

Amini Silatolu (Senior, Midwestern State, 6-3, 318) is another intriguing OG. If he shows well at the combine, his stock will rise.

    • msclemons67 says:

I hope they hang on to Snyder. He may not be a world beater but he can play respectably at every position on the line. That sort of versatility is valuable.

Since the 49ers close their practices now no one except the coaches knows how well Kilgore is doing.

  27. ninerz says:

It’s great to go on a holiday with your folks, how romantic…

  28. Stan says:

As far as the dusts up on the blog? It reminds me of the cable commercial about what happens when you have anger issue’s. And stop collectiong stray animals.

  29. old coach says:

the AS arguement reminds of those who loved Tittle and hated brodie then those who loved Mira and still hated Brodie. then those who loved Spurrier and still hated brodie. then those who loved montana and hated young. then those who hated garcia and loved Rattay. it goes on and on and on. personally i loved tittle, brodie, montana. young. garcia and i dont love alex but he is starting to grow on me a little

    • Neal says:

Can’t say I ever heard of Mira but your argument is comparing two QB’s and we are just arguing about one QB. I would love to have another QB to argue with and do hope that JH delivers with with some good open competition, also can’t believe anyone would argue that Rattay was better then Garcia.

      • old coach says:

terrell owens himself said he liked rattay better. said he threw the deep ball better

      • Neal says:

oh well, Rice never complained about Garcia and he worked hard with Young, when Joe was sent packing. Owens is a complainer, if he kept his mouth shut he would still be gainfully employed.

    • 49erGirl says:

I like the way you put that.

I really like Alex and want to see him do well, but I’m not sure my feelings for him as our starting QB will ever completely be out of “the friend zone”.

There are flashes of “wow, this could really work!!” but most of the time I’m thinking “he’s good and seems to have potential, but is he the best we can do?”

Guess we’ll have at least one more season to figure it all out.

    • msclemons67 says:

I was too young to understand the Tittle-Brodie debate but I remember the Montana vs. Young arguments very well. It’s a good thing we didn’t have much of an internet during those years. The Web would have burned down.

  30. MukulB says:

Very sad state of journalism indeed -

    • htwaits says:

What makes you think sports blogs have anything to do with journalism? They are a way to get your toe in the door as several others have proven. Grant has talent, so I expect him to be doing more and more journalism as time goes on.

As for the PD, I doubt that they get very excited when a single post generates over 1.550 replies, most of them abusive, from the same seven or eight people.

Don’t see no bottom line there.

  31. Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, welcome back! The wine you had sounds great – I’ll check them out.
Regarding the blog, of the 1450++ comments, about 300-400 might be football interesting. The rest…can you say *bulk delete*??

Most of the 9er news is around FA, WR, draft, cap space, and combine. I’m looking for to some good reads from you (soon please!!).

    • Hoferfan67 says:

BTW, a few days ago I opened a Turnbull 2008 Cab (yes young but very drinkable) that was awesome and would probably give your 2007 Matanzas Creek Cab a run for the money. I know it is sacrilege in these parts to recommend a wine from another region (WA state) but a really good buy is the Columbia Crest H3 Merlot – just plain awesome! Very inexpensive as well!

      Now back to football…

      • msclemons67 says:

A Washington Cabernet? Heresy! I will quote the Pace Picante commercials:

        “Get a rope”

Is Turnbull a Columbia Valley winery? That area is exploding with grapes. I went to Walla Walla for business last year and it was just a sea of vineyards.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Talk about proliferating stereotypes! 49ers fans sipping wine. All we need now is someone to bring the cheese : (.

      • ribico says:

Know your stereotypes, Jack – it’s white wine. They are talking reds here. :P

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @Clemons
      “is Turnbull Columbia Valley?”
Dude! Turnbull is the heart of the Napa Valley, right next to Cakebread; c’mon, man! But, don’t ever underestimate Knights Valley for Cab!
Now anybody want to get serious and talk Pinot Noir…….well, we can talk.

      • msclemons67 says:

Argh! I knew that! I misread Hofer’s post – he was talking about a Ste. Michelle wine.

And you aren’t kidding about Knight’s Valley – great for Cabs. Even a low end Knight’s Valley cab like Beringer can be quite tasty.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        Ahhhhhh, an Oenophile after all!
You’re right about Columbia Valley though, and if this Global Warming thing keeps playing out, Oregon Pinots and Washington Cabs may end up on top!
OK, I better get off this wine thing or everyone will think I’m Stan!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Columbia Crest (H3 Merlot) is in the state of WA. Turnbull is Napa Valley.

MSC, Beringer’s Knights Valley Cab is very good for the price.

      • msclemons67 says:

I work for a company that makes labels for Columbia Crest. I have had the luxury a few free samples. Definitely good at that price point. And the people at Ste. Michelle’s are top-notch. A really great company that tries very hard to be green while producing a superior product.

Yes, I’m a giant CSM fan-boy. Sue me.

      • Brotha tuna says:

        @Clemons
Ya’know. I really agree that CSM is a fine company. I worked with them on the logistics end of the biz, and their supply response/shipping people were amongst the best in the biz. Their Green policies stood out too.
The wines are solid and priced right…… I’m just kinda spoiled here in NorCal.
Tuesday Red: Marrietta Old Vines Red. In many super market chains in Cal. Reasonably priced throwback Field Blend from Sonoma County. This is best representation of Paisano Red you’ll find; roots of Cal Vitriculture. Last wine post tonight; I promise!

      • msclemons67 says:

@Brotha no doubt that California still beats Washington for great reds.

Did you get to work with Lynne Miller and Les Wallace? They are fantastic.

      • msclemons67 says:

And my last wine post – Marietta may make good wines, I don’t know, haven’t tried them. But they were a total pain in the arse to deal with as a supplier. I dreaded those visits to the little shack down the hill from Geyser Peak.

        :-D

      • Brotha tuna says:

@Clemons. I did. But not since ’08. They, and several outfits here in Cal, operated with ‘poise’; a compliment I reserve for the worthy.
Two credos I worked by in Logistics:
1/ I’d rather work with a competent A****** every day than the nicest, well-meaning nincompoop.
2/ Your lack of planning does not necessarily constitute an emergency on my part.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Brotha, got a good deal on A to Z Winery Pinot (Oregon) at Costco. One of my favorite Pinots is Ken Wright.

      • Brotha tuna says:

        @Hofe
So I’m WAYYYYYY off topic, but been drinking and can’t hep it.
AtoZ oh yeah. Sokol Blosser up there too.
Williams-Selyem/Flowers/J (!)/Daniel Gehrs (Santa Barbara, also Sanford down there)/ tiny but cool: Radio Coteau/Cuvaison/Sinskey/Golden Eye/Siduri/Gary Farrel/Hartford/Iron Horse/Testarossa (for you SouthBay fans)
        OK, G’night.

      • msclemons67 says:

“2/ Your lack of planning does not necessarily constitute an emergency on my part.”

I agree with the sentiment Brotha but I never dealt with a winery that followed that logic. Most California wineries, if they forgot to order glass, labels or foils – it was the suppliers’ fault. Kathryn from Buttonwood was a classic example. She would place orders 3 weeks before bottling and spaz out if suppliers couldn’t meet the dates.

Hey lady – EVERY effing winery in the state is ordering product right now. Your little operation doesn’t move to the the head of the line just because you whine and bitch.

I should stop before I get fired.

      • Brotha tuna says:

        G’day Clemons-
I enjoyed chatting last night. Last thought on my work credo is: that’s why we have that saying, cuz customers drive us nuts! Of course, if they weren’t a hassle, nobody would pay us to deal with them.

  32. Neal says:

Some of you need to relax your butt cheeks and take a deep breath, and stop bashing Grant,he is just checking in with us back from vacation. How would you like to come back from vacation and deal with tards like you are, you are negative miserable creatures. Not every blog is going to have earth shattering information, the good stuff will be coming soon. Take a deep breath, work out, go for a run, take a yoga class, have a intimate time with the one you love if your so lucky or better yet take a suppository or maybe two.

  33. old coach says:

Grant i asked this question while you were gone, maybe you could ask someone in the 49er organization. Is there going to be any mass transit from san francisco to the new stadium? IE. caltrain or a bart extension

  34. AES says:

Welcome back Grant. Hope you had some awesome Mexican food and Sun-rays.

Your topic about Alex’ strenghts and weaknesses were a work of art. Some of us were wondering if you would receive 600 hits before the steam ran out on the subject. Well, with over 1,400 hits you at least know what subject matter to posts next time you go on vacation (lol).

  35. Jack Hammer says:

Grant, While you were gone we learned that you are a freaking genius for posting about Alex Smith right before you left as the blog kept humming right along.

We found out that there are many who want to get rid of Michael Crabtree.

We lost one of the true greats, both in football and life with the passing of Freddie Solomon.

It was announced that Shawntae Spencer could shop his services elsewhere, adios Spence.

And there were a few moves/announcements on the FA front regarding the Franchise tag that will effect the 49ers choices for FA pickups.

There was a brief discussion regarding who would be the characters if they decided to use this board as a means of recasting Cheers.

The Great Claude came back and did his best to set everyone straight.

  36. MidWestNiner says:

Welcome back Grant. Just in time for the combine.

  37. Stan says:

When you were gone Grant, journalism was replaced by cannibalism..

  38. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Welcome back Grant. Everyone needs a break. Looking forward to see if the 49ers franchise anyone and if they make a play for a wide receiver.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @Andrew
The other day you mentioned McNutt, huh? I checked him out and he looks like a late 2nd or a 3rd with potential to develop into a #2WR. Others in that group might include the kids from GaTech & N.Carolina. To me they look like pretty good value picks with upside, but a ceiling near to Josh Morgan. I like Josh, but we’ve got him already. I’m hoping for something a cut above that. If Jeffrey has any speed, hmmm, and I’m warming slightly to the guy from Notre Dame.
I’M guessing we don’t get anywhere near Wright. If we can’t get the WR we want, there’s OL or DB.
CB I like Gilmore & T.Johnson & Dennard. That’s assuming the Alabama and LSU cb s are gone.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Dennard’s name comes up in many mock drafts. Two writers on CBS Sportsline pick him at 30. It seems that Bowe will be off the market, that will raise the price on all free agent receivers. If Kendall Wright falls high teens or low twenties I would imagine there would be some interest. Another way of going is to look for someone like Demaryius Thomas of the Broncos. A college receiver that played in a run offense but had a huge yardage per catch ratio even though he didn’t get many looks.

      • Brotha tuna says:

        @Andrew
Nick Toon from Wisc almost fits that. I’m seeing him placed at 2nd/3rd Rd. UW was run-oriented (they have two good OL prospects 1st/2nd Rd this year). Toon’s got decent size but not a burner. One rating called him good at everything, but maybe not great.
Now at risk of being obsessed with speed like Al Davis, there’s a guy from Fresno State (Wylie ?) we might be able to get Rd4/5. He’s small but supposedly runs sub 4.4.

  39. Neal says:

If we could talk to a Smither, just imagine it
Chatting to a Smither in Smitherpanzee
Imagine talking to a Smither chatting to a Smither
What a neat achievement that would be.

If we could talk to the Smither, learn their languages
    Maybe take an Smither degree.
    We’d study Smither

    We would converse in Smither
And we could curse in fluent Smither
If people asked us, can you speak in Smither

If we could talk to the Smither learn their languages
Think of all the things we could discuss
If we could walk with the Smither, talk with the Smither,
Grunt and squeak and squawk with the Smither
And they could squeak and squawk and speak and talk to us.

    • claude balls says:

      @Neal:

That looks like easy fun. May I try?

He could wile away the hours
      Conferrin’ with the flowers
      Consultin’ with the rain
And his head he’d be scratchin’
While his thoughts were busy hatchin’
If Neal only had a brain

      He’d unravel any riddle
      For any individ’le
      In trouble or in pain

With the thoughts he’d be thinkin’
      He could be another Lincoln
If Neal only had a brain

Oh, he would tell you why
      The ocean’s near the shore
He could think of things he never thunk before
And then he’d sit and think some more

He would not be just a nuffin’
His head all full of stuffin’
His heart all full of pain
He would dance and be merry
      Life would be a ding-a-derry
If Neal only had a brain

      • Neal says:

        Claude, this sounds like fun.

Somewhere over Claude balls way up high

And Claude balls that you dreamed of
        Once in a lullaby
        Somewhere over rainbow
        Claude balls fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true ooh ooooh
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like claude balls drop
High above the chimney tops thats where you’ll find me oh
Somewhere over the rainbow claude balls fly
And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can’t I?

      • claude balls says:

        Anyone else feel a draft?

      • Neal says:

What did you have for lunch today balls?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Too much fun. My turn.

        I love you,
        You love me,
        We’re a great big family,
With a great big hug, and a kiss between you two,
Won’t you say you love Bay too

      • msclemons67 says:

Damn you Jack. My kids grew out of that dinosaur about 10 years ago and I FINALLY got that stupid song out of my head maybe last year. You just put it back.

      • NickRow says:

        That was hilarious Neal

      • NickRow says:

This is fun. Let me try now.

        Oh! You better watch out,
        You better not cry,
        You better not pout,
        I’m telling you why:
Santa Balls is coming to town!

      • Neal says:

        lol NickRow,

Just what I want for Christmas a pair of Claude Balls.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Claude never said he was a guy. He never claimed a gender. In fact, he added the “balls” to throw everyone off. I think Claude is an alien like DS. Same planet even.

  40. Prime Time says:

Bay you got knocked the fox out! Claude you own Bay!

    • DS94everXev says:

That is a negative value then prime.

Claude couldn’t pay somebody to take bay off his hands.

      • claude balls says:

        I’d try.

“Like it? Well I don’t see why I oughtn’t to like it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”

  41. Razoreater says:

Welcome back little buddy…just in time for the combine.

  42. claude balls says:

There’s not enough talk about Alex Smith in this thread.

    Quick, everyone read this: http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2012/02/whitner-backs-alex-smith-says-it-was-tough-to-forgive-kyle-williams.html

jordan should be writing a comment critiquing Whitner’s skill set in 3…2…1…

  43. Prime Time says:

Lemons how would a probowl guard like Nicks look? Snyder could also be replaced by Kilgore but I like the idea of keeping the continuity of the line in tact with Snyder. They let Baas walk who I think is better than Snyder so it’s very possible no offer is tendered to Snyder.

    • msclemons67 says:

Nicks is looking for a mega-deal in excess of what Jahvri Evans got – close to $8 million per year. The 49ers already have a lot of money tied up on the O-Line and paying a guard more than any other member of the offense just doesn’t seem like a Baalke-Harbaugh thing to do.

In my dreams I would love to see Nicks on the 49ers though – he’s a beast.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Not to mention that the Saints will most likely slap the franchise tag on him.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I thought guards would have a different franchise tag than tackles and centers but they are all one price. I can’t see the Niners overpaying for a guard.

      • Brotha tuna says:

I agree that the SF front office has a limit to what they’ll pay for interior linemen. We lost Baas and Smiley that way. Snyder’s versatility might help his value to the 49ers.
One small consideration on Nicks is that he played with Goodwin at NO and the Niners probably look good to a Guard; good D and commitment to the run, and a shot at the Big Dance.
In the end, money talks, but small things can be tie-breakers in a guy’s decisions.

  44. Razoreater says:

I’d rather trade up and get DeCastro. Cheaper and boy would that offensive line be a wrecking crew. The NFL Draft can never get here soon enough for me. Can’t Wait!

    • Brotha Tuna says:

He’s an awesome prospect, but “cheaper”? Yeah, cheaper in $ & cap space, but expensive in picks. I see him going between #12-#16. That would cost what? Our 1′ & 3 & 5? Seems pricey……….

  45. bayareafanatic says:

Just heard a passed along rumor that V Jax told his agent to contact the Niners. I stand corrected if it’s true. I didn’t think a decent receiver would want to come play with Alex as the QB.

    • BigP says:

I don’t think it has anything to do with Smith. I could see a receiver finding a pass-happy team being more attractive just from a production standpoint, but Jackson is looking for his big pay day. I think that’s the overriding factor at this point in his career. He wants a Brandon Marshall type contract, 24-25 million guaranteed. I don’t know that the Niners will put that type of money up for a 29 year old.

    • big niner says:

he’s just looking for a big payday. I don’t think the niners would give a 29 year old money like that, especially being a one demensional player. Most likely they would look in the draft for a WR.

  46. Brotha Tuna says:

    Yeah, bye the way, y’all:
    C’est Bon temps roule!
Just got back from a Cake Walk Parade in downtown Petaluma and an a**kicking N’awlins dinner @ Central Market.
Enjoy: Lent starts mañana. : >)

    • msclemons67 says:

Petaluma has done an amazing job revitalizing the riverfront area in the past decade. I’m a big fan of Macguire’s Pub even though the menu is a bit too busy.

I didn’t notice a huge Cajun influence last time I was there though. That must be new :-D

  47. oneniner says:

    …..why i prefer Colston…..

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1067461-san-francisco-49ers-why-marques-colston-is-the-answer-at-wr

“Look at how remarkably efficient Colston is with passes thrown his way. Obviously he has a one-of-a-kind quarterback to fling him the pigskin, but I don’t see Jackson or Bowe reaching that level even with Brees throwing them the ball.”…..

    • ninermd says:

Ha ha haaaaa let me help you out and post on your lame opinion.
Subject: Nobody cares what you think! Buahahahahaaa. Your credibility has never existed. You did say “Nobody fears Rodgers” and many many other stupid statements. So there onelame. Enjoy your only comment.wheew. I feel sorry for your life!

      • ribico says:

Grant. Can you do something about non-football related postings that consist of nothing but insults?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Come on md.

oneniner didn’t go after you on this thread, nor anybody else.

        oneniner & md

I know you two are not best of buds, but try to keep the insults between you two away on threads that did not mention/involve any of you to zero.

If one of you goes after the other, I get it. But md, there was nothing here man. What would you do if oneniner came at you (and I know he has) on a post where you tried to talk all football and he just insults you the whole post not even mentioning anything you brought up? You would probably go after him. Then he goes at you, and so forth.

  48. soflo9er says:

Sorry, Grant. Your blog has imploded into a bubbling mass of mindless twits trying to outclever each other. Absolutely no mention of anything 9er related (other than the ever-present Alex bashing). I guaranty that if all these posters were sitting in a room actually facing each other, the conversation would be more respectful or else there’d be some serious blood-letting. Internet cowboys?! ooooooooohhhh, I’m scared.

    @Grant

Wanna know what happened in the past week?

Look at this blog, and you’ll get a pretty good idea. I was personally hoping that we were going to leave all of that behind and get back to the blog subject of football.

    • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Getting back to talking football? It took up 3 posts between you and blog just so you could figure out how to type (italics) sheesh. Just use quotation marks, it will accomplish the same thing.

      • claude balls says:

        @Jack

Blog? Wow. We used to be so close.

      • DS94everXev says:

If you don’t know what I was talking about, that 3rd grade comment I made about you earlier may have been over-reaching.

        Don’t play dumb.

And, sorry. I do like like the italics. It makes it really obvious which parts Claude writes and which parts he is quoting.

Is it so bad to admire something somebody does on this blog? Or does this also have to become a fight?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        My apologies Claude.

  50. Razoreater says:

We signed the Browns ex long snapper. Scratching my head on that one.

    • old coach says:

does he do anything other than long snap?

      • Razoreater says:

Nope, Jennings is signed through ’14. Competition at all positions is the standard set by Coach Harbaugh I surmise.

      • Neal says:

Wondering if they want to save money, Jenning make $875,000 seems like a hell of alot for a long snapper. I know he is a Pro Bowl player and been on the team for a long time.

  51. Adam707 says:

Another main topic that came up while you were gone is Moss announced he wants to come put of retirement. What is your take on this Grant? Do we give him a chance if we can’t grab someone else

  52. old coach says:

i doubt jennings is retireing long snappers can go into their 40′s

  53. old coach says:

the long snapper pontbriand also plays center. so who knows

  54. old coach says:

grant why did’nt the press democrat send you to the combine? it seems like the last couple of guys who wrote this blog went.

  55. claude balls says:

Absolutely nothing new or enlightening from Jason La Canfora, but it is about the 49ers and they show clips from this past season:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-free-agency/09000d5d8271b2f9/Striking-gold-in-free-agency

    Summary:

    1. Goldson more likely to get franchise tag than Rogers.

    2. Alex Smith is definitely coming back – includes the completely speculative assertion that the Kevin Kolb contract will serve as a template for Smith: 6 years/$60 million, structured so that the team can get out early if necessary).

    3. 49ers will definitely look at free agent WRs – Vincent Jackson is exactly what 49ers are looking for; Dwayne Bowe would be a chepaer alternative if Chiefs don’t franchise him; would be a perfect fit; 49ers are exactly the kind of team that will consider going after Mike Wallace if Steelers do not franchise him.

The next video in line is the NFL Network interview with Donte Whitner. Haven’t watched it yet.

  56. BigP says:

The keyboard gangsters are out in full effect, lol.

  57. Brotha tuna says:

Harsh Dude! He can’t even MENTION New Orleans cooking? Jeez.
My N’awlins dinner was delivered by a California Chef in a California restaurant to local Petaluma residents with local ingredients (the Chef has a farm here in Petaluma) Yeah, the server and the Hostess and the busboy and the prep cook and the brick oven cook all live here in Petaluma. So, wtf? Clemons is a Brees Guy for talking about Petaluma, Patterson, Washington, and cajun cuisine?
The Qualifications for Politically Correct 49ers fan have stiffened up lately? My bad!

  58. BigP says:

Lol, posting with another alias from your Metro PCS phone so Grant doesn’t call you out via URL.

    S49,

Even “commies” know there is no such thing as “free speech” on a privately hosted forum.

What’s your excuse for ignorance? Stupidity?

  60. Brotha tuna says:

So, Grant, can we get a little help on this guy? There’s a few that you may care to scrutinize.

  61. Brotha tuna says:

This one too, but perhaps the same….
