Inside the 49ers goes year-round

When the season ended, maybe some of you thought you wouldn’t hear from me for a while. But the Santa Rosa Press Democrat informed me they consider this a 12-month a year position because football never stops.

So, our conversation will continue without interruption except for a few days next week when I’ll be in Mexico. Some of the big things coming up are the scouting combine, free agency, the NFL draft, mini camps, OTAs, etc. The calendar is full.

I want to thank everybody for helping to create such a wonderful community, and to the PD for believing in me and you.

  5. Mood Indigo says:

    Grant,
Have a fun trip! Remember to start a thread on Alex (or Harbalex) before you leave for Mexico. The thread will be going strong even after you are back.

    Enjoy Mexico…

  7. MWNiner says:

  8. J.R. Krikorian says:

    Grant,

Thank you for a great season of reasonable dialoge. May 2012 bring more of the professional insight you shared this past year.

  9. El Seth says:

Mexico? We’re going to need hourly cervesa and tequila updates.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Reminds me some good times at the Giggling Marlin and Cabo Wabo…uggh, can you say tequila poisoning? Now it’s strictly beer and wine. lol

  10. Msclemons67 says:

    Great news for us.

Possibly bad news for Grant’s sanity.

  11. Stan says:

And the occasional other sports talk? Why not?
oh yeah, beach football. If you thought the pro bowl was soft..try the senorita’s..

  12. old coach says:

  13. ninerz says:

Thank your father for connecting you for the job, don’t think you’re doing is so nice or objectively. thank god for kawakami…

    • Streetglide says:

Don’t post when you are drunk. It really messes with your grammar…

    • 49erGirl says:

Yes, Kawakami is best known for his objectivity – he’s right up there with Ray Ratto.

      • Neal says:

I love Ratto hockey and Sharks knowledge, Kawakami tries to be but not close to Ratto.

      • 49erGirl says:

I used to be a hockey fanatic, but haven’t followed it much in the last 10 years (the sport went downhill for me when Gretzky retired), so I’ll have to take your word on Ratto.

I don’t care for either one of them when it comes to covering the Niners….

      • NickRow says:

Ratto is the king of negativity and at times he just doesn’t make sense. For example, last week on KNBR, Ralph Barbeiri was talking about athletes choking under pressure. In response, Ratto said something like “what if the athlete just fails? I wouldn’t call that choking”. To quote the great Scooby Doo, “huh”. Didn’t make sense to me …

      • darrel says:

Along with Ratto. You are kidding right. He could leave the bayarea and i would be happy. Just my opinion.

      • Neal says:

Kawakami is actually my least favorite, also he is very sensitive, if you disagree with him on the slightest issue, he will ban you from the blog, I love the Sharks, go to about to about 10 games a year and watch every one on TV, actually the Sharks are my favorite all time team and favorite sport, followed by the Niners. Nickrowe, Ralph and Tom are unlistenable, especially Ralph, who does not follow sports, Tolbert does folow sports but can’t ask a guest a question under a 1000 words.

    • Stan says:

And thanks him for conceiving you,and the grandparents and -heck lets keep going until we get to primeval DNA bacteria 5 billion years ago. Cohncillus?

      • DS94everXev says:

        RNA came first Stan.

A NOVA Science NOW episode discussed how the origins of life began. And using the conditions that we believe were present on Earth x years ago, they managed to get the formation of Uracil. Uracil is on the of the building blocks of RNA.

So, they found how to form one the building blocks of RNA. Which is really all one needs to have life. RNA can be copied just like DNA, and is the thing that makes protein, which is the thing that does everything life needs to exist.

  14. ARIZONA NINER FAN says:

You earned a some R and R and the beaches of Mexico are hard to beat. The cervesa is cold, the sun is warm and the seafood is very fresh. Adios….

  15. DS94everXev says:

If you were not here Grant, nobody else would be either.

Enjoy your time off. And for heavens sake, stay away from the internet on your vacation. lol

  16. AES says:

Great, athletes don’t have anymore off seasons and neither should we. Plus what would I do without having ‘oneniner’ calling me names (lol).

Enjoy your well deserved time off Grant. Just leave us with an Alex Smith topic and i’m sure we’ll keep it alive until your return!

  17. Streetglide says:

  29. Chicago49er says:

Grant thank you so much for all your hardwork and contributing to this blog family. I wish you a great vacation.

  30. Razoreater says:

Yea recharge the ol cranium and come back refreshed and inspired. Just watch out for the cartels maan. I see Mr. Baalke got an extension. Coach Harbaugh next?

  31. NickRow says:

This is great news Grant. Enjoy Mexico amigo.

  32. Razoreater says:

Wow, 69 of his 115 receptions last year went for first downs. Mr. Sanu may be just what the doctor ordered.

  33. BC Niner says:

    Great work!

  34. Woody says:

When I grow up I want to be Grant (note the AARP commercials of the same vein) .

  35. blazer says:

Grant, congrats to you, & your Dad…I know your Dad is glad his old blog is back. Also you did a great job this past year with this MB, much success in the future.

  36. Freddie P. Soft says:

i first discovered this site when i was reading that terrell owens was participating in a movie called any given sunday. Although i must admit when the 49ers were bad i didnt check the site as often to hardly never. But when singletary was hired and the team went 8-8 i was back on the site again.

  37. NinerRider says:

Keeo it comming!! Can’t get enough!!

  38. 49erGirl says:

Grant – just saw a footnote scrolling across the screen on NFL Network that the Niners named Gideon Yu as President and co-owner…can you give us the scoop on that?

They also extended Baalke through 2016.

    • rebelscum74 says:

The Yorks are keeping it tight lip but some of the rumors I heard was when Mr. Yu was “hired” a few months ago, and we are talking about a very rich man, it was a deal that caused for a partial ownership and he proivded capital and security if the Stadium project started to slip and may have been part of the NFL oking the loan, lots of conditions are done behind the scenes with no one knowing. All speculation on my part. Hopefully this means we can keep lots of are own players and add a couple of pieces. Changing world but it would love to keep most of our team together. I feel if we lose Carlos Rodgers that will hurt us but this will be a once in the life time to cash in so who can blame him. It is a business which none of us on hear I believe , except Grant since it his is Job but one does will I would add, get any money from this, Just pain and suffering and moments of joy and jubiliation maybe why we all wear the red and gold and are fans, As I blab away as my oldest child was in a single car accident where the car was totaleded both air bags deployed, Glad somebody argued for seatbelts and airbags in this Counthry even though we all hate to be told what to do. Anyway he and his friend walked away, he only need six stitches on his hand. Mom and I are not sleeping very well tonight very greatful, only share this that life is short, I am very greatful and humbled and football is a small part, My family has a had a very hard year but I am glad he is alive and well and so is our other kids. I have shared enough personal stuff now and before but life is short enjoy it, I hope all the banter on this blog is in good fun no one gets too offended and or to cut throat.

      • drsgrosse says:

Rebel: Very glad your son is ok…hopefuly something positive comes from this accident in the end…interesting point on the new team Pres.

Have to disagree on Rogers. He has already cashed in with his current contract. Even at a discount, he will make more money than he will ever need. Hopefully, he keeps that in perspective and stays. If he jumps simply for the money, I wouldn’t want to root for him anyway.

That brings up a point about who we get to root for. I want to win and win and win, but I also want “our guys” to be “good” guys. Belichick wins a lot, but I’m glad I don’t have to root for him. Jim Schwartz may make the Lions perennial contenders, but I’m glad he’s not in SF. Jay Cutler may someday be an MVP, but I’d rather go with Alex.

Anyway, hope you and Mom sleep better tonight.

      • 49erGirl says:

Rebel – so happy to hear you son is OK. That’s was a potential parents worst nightmare so no wonder you’re not sleeping well.

Good news is that he walked away and probably learned a few valuable lessons in the process. Hope you and your family are able to rest easy tonight.

Thank you for the inside scoop – at least your insomnia helped us here a bit ;-)

      • rebelscum74 says:

Thank you all for the Good thoughts, Re-reading my post my spelling is Terrible, never a strength. 49er girl he has diffently learned something. I am also growing very old very fast!

      • AngusinCanada says:

Rebelscum, glad to hear your son’s okay. Stuff like that really puts things into perspective. Talking about seatbelts, you can thank Ralph Nader, who almost singlehandedly took on the big auto companies, and forced mandatory seatbelts on them. They would never have done it otherwise.

      • rebelscum74 says:

Thank you Angus, appreciate the info on Ralph Nader, I have a sister who lives in Idaho that fights wearing her seatbelt along with her kids, even this experience is not changing her mind. Sad and Scary!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @rebelscum

“Glad somebody argued for seatbelts and airbags in this Counthry even though we all hate to be told what to do. ”

Sometimes people just need to understand that others know more than they do about certain things and just go with what they say.

I too am happy about your son.
      : – )

      • 49erGirl says:

I hope its an eye opener for others seeing that you would use a quote from a parent talking about being thankful that his son was OK after a car accident and try and spin it to throw a jab at others on this blog.

Do you really think any of us don’t know that was directed at Big P?.

Thank you for showing what a considerate being you really are.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Can’t help it can you?

      • 49erGirl says:

You should ask yourself that question Ms “I never read 9erGirl’s posts”

I have clearly stated that I read yours and will be calling you on your BS.

      • DS94everXev says:

If you want to throw insults off of a thread where a fellow fan tells us how grateful he is that people who know more about safety insisted upon seat belts and air bags that saved his child’s life, have at it.

        I won’t.

      • 49erGirl says:

Nice try at redirection, but most people in here can see right through that.

Surely you can come up with something better than that to try and save face.

  39. Dhthegr8t says:

    Nice…enjoy your trip

  40. Prescott AZ. David says:

    Grant two words, BOTTLED WATER.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Yeah, down there water is where the fish live, beer is what you drink! Light beer is better than dark beer for brushing your teeth in the morning, by the way.

  41. Stan says:

    I’ve gone LINSANE!..get the straightjacket!

    • Max says:

@Stan, I’ve gotta thank you, too. I can’t tell you how many times you’ve made my day. I’m sitting here looking out my window at several inches of snow on the ground and still laughing at your latest comment. (But I also thank you for so often being the conscience of this blog.)

  42. Timothy says:

Grant — thanks for keeping the news coming. The club is on the rise; great things are on the way.

  43. Sean in Canada says:

Enjoy the well deserved vacation, Grant. Good work and look forward to more Niner talk.

  44. NickRow says:

I saw a travel alert to certain parts of Mexico. Stay safe Grant.

By the way, Niners denied the Bucs from interviewing Ed Donatell for their D coordinator job – keeping to the word of JH to keep the coaching staff intack.

  45. Adam says:

    Yay! Football all year.

    Thanks, Grant!

So, in the off-season, here’s what I predict:

I agree with your previous post on the franchise tag for Goldson, agree with re-signing everyone possible. I like Carlos Rogers over Ahmad Brooks, but I hope we keep them both. If not, I can see Smith playing more downs and DeMarcus Dobbs stepping up (I really liked what I saw from him last pre-season in the exhibition games.)

On offense, I like Steve Johnson coming back home to San Francisco from the Bills in free agency. This would be an excellent piece to add to the puzzle. In addition, I can see Sanu or Jeffrey in a Niners uniform, although there are a few guys lower down that might be steals, McNutt, for example, maybe Jones. Johnson and a good draft pick will add some serious horsepower where it’s needed – at the receiver position. Johnson is well-known as a precise route runner, pretty speedy inside, etc. Sanu’s got some speed, Jeffrey has leaping-catch skills. Jones, McNutt and one or two other guys I’m blanking out on at the moment also have some very decent skill stretching the field. This would give Alex Smith some much-weapons. I can’t wait! 14-2, here we come.

If we can’t re-sign Rogers then Brock, Culliver and the rest will have to have big games. Whitner was a nice add this past offseason, too. Could be that there is some activity in the draft for the secondary or it could be that the young kid we drafted and went out in camp with the achilles injury comes back healthy.

Anyway… glad you’ve got the helm for the whole offseason, it’s gonna be fun!

    • Adam says:

I think I’m also agreeing with someone else who mentioned it earlier. Pick up an OT for the right side of the line and move Davis to Guard. The right side needs some help.

    • Brotha tuna says:

There’s a pretty good tall CB from Montana Trumaine Johnson, I think) who looks good to me. Also a tall CB from S.Carolina that could be available.
A number of big WRs in Rds 2-3, and some smaller very speedy guys like the kid from Fresno State in mid rounds, but not that many #1 Rcvrs in draft or FA. Sure Johnson and Vince Jackson are #1s, but DeShaun might not fit with JH. I think we need a #1 Receiver, not just some mid-rounders; hope we can get there. Is Jeffries fast enough?
And yeah, right side OL needs improvement. I hate taking VD out of patterns to help out pass blocking.

  46. Stan says:

Ok,I’m watching Death Race 2000-and the big semi with flame throwers and machine gun turrets? How can it miss Jason Stathams Mustang right along side????!…How bad can evil convicts aim be?
I find it hard to beleive!
    But fun.

    • AngusinCanada says:

About as bad as the nasty Russians in Rambo 3 or 4 (the one in Afghanistan – when the russkies were the bad guy occupiers). Sly singlehandedly takes out an army division, whilst avoiding, by my count, 32 million rounds and several dozen rockets.

  47. Stan says:

btw,I was thinking of an old post I made on SF Hate a couple of years ago. I said I wished I could tie Zito,Rowand,Russell and Alex Smith together with rocks..and drop them from a helicopter into McCovey cove.
Alex Smith is now untied and released. Billy Beane takes his place…

    • msclemons67 says:

Hrmm… Beane sort of has his hands tied by Wolff doesn’t he?

      • rebelscum74 says:

He sure is making lots of money! Stan if you ever get a chance to do that, Get the pass words to their bank accounts! I am sure we could all come up with some good uses for the money.

    • DS94everXev says:

Russell was an embarrassment to the QB position.

  48. Grndmstrjns says:

thanks grant for all your hard work

  49. AK49erfan says:

That’s great… the more Niner news the better. Congratulations Grant, extra time awarded for some extraordinary coverage this year! Enjoy your trip! Still remember my trip to Mexico… only had to be able to see over the bar for them to serve you, my first beer was in Cabo San Lucas & the only Spanish phrase I knew was “Uno Cerveza Porfavor!”
