49ers sign Cox to 2-year deal. Rogers and Ginn on way out?

The 49ers signed 25-year old cornerback and return specialist Perrish Cox this morning to a two-year contract.

This could signal the end for Carlos Rogers and Ted Ginn Jr. in red and gold.

Cox will most likely compete with Tramaine Brock for the third CB job, while Chris Culliver and Tarell Brown will start.

On special teams, Cox could take Ginn’s job as the primary returner. He returned punts and kicks in college, averaging 11.6 yards per punt return and 24 yards per kick return.

Cox (6-0, 198 lbs.) was initially considered a first-round talent when he declared for the draft in 2010, but he ran a slow 40 yard dash and he got arrested for driving on a suspended license, so he dropped to the fifth round before getting drafted by the Broncos, where he played under current Niners’ defensive backs coach, Ed Donatell.

On December 9, 2010, Cox was charged with felonious sexual assault, but he was acquitted on March 2nd, 2012.

Cox will need to show he’s faster than he was a couple years ago at the NFL Combine if he wants to beat Brock for the No. 3 CB, but he should have the inside track to win the return specialist job.

This move leaves the Niners significant cap space to sign a wide receiver like Joshua Morgan, Laurent Robinson or Pierre Garçon. Trent Baalke is being shrewd. He doesn’t need to overspend on Rogers or any CB while the team has one of the best pass rushes in the NFL. The team needs better receivers, period. Spend on the pressing need. And that’s what he appears to be doing.

Final note: The Niners first two free agent signings are players who did not play last year and who have troubled histories, so Harbaugh is banking big-time on the strength of the locker room and his leadership ability.

  1. Matt49erFan831 says:

I guess we can all say goodbye to Carlos Rogers…I hope TB’s frugality doesn’t turn the Niners into the NFL’s version of the Oakland A’s…that would truly suck…

  2. elGuapo says:

Hooooly schnike’?!?! I’d rather have Ginn returning, but looks like the powers that be have a plan. Hmmmm. Perrish Cox. hmmm.

  3. Lemonpie89 says:

If its an issue of cap space, I would’ve rather payed slightly over the odds for Rogers than payed Goldson reasonably well. Rogers doesn’t bust coverages as much and still makes plays.

  4. RednGold says:

It sucks to see Rogers goes to the division rival Rams.

    • NickRow says:

I think Rogers will struggle in St Louis. It sounds like Rogers is asking for too much. I still think last year’s one year deal with Rogers was a mistake. We had the cap space and could have locked up CR to multiple years.

Anyway, look for the Niners to draft a CB

  5. Benny Blanco says:

I’m diggin all these moves. I loved Rodgers year of play but he is going to get PAID. I really want Morgan back… he fits this team in every way

  6. Htesrepus says:

I like it, bring in the talent

  7. Brian says:

Hi Grant. One of the best pass rushes? Yes. One of the best pass defenses? No. The niners were exactly middle of the pack in pass coverage. Yes, great rush defense forced other teams to throw more. But, I got tired game after game of watching other teams throw it all over the field on us. Luckily our red zone D kept them to field goals. I would hate to see us water down the already average secondary.

  8. Medic One says:

Ginn is a liability on the field. He doesn’t run precise routes. He had his chance to take the job last season and couldn’t stay healthy or be a productive starter. He reminds me a lot of the Brandon Lloyd era without the marvelous hands.
What concerns me is the secondary. Rogers shored up the seconday last season adn I believe helped hide some inefficiencies at CB. I hope the team doesn’t overlook that.

  9. TIM_ says:

Are we going back to slow kick/punt returners like in the past when we didnt get the great field position . Our offense depended on being set up with consistently great field position and in fact kick/punt returning won about two games for us last season. Maybe they go after Royal ?
Baalke is sure getting a head start on free agency this year ,I just hope he has a few more signings up his sleeve when real fa starts .

    • Grant Cohn says:

Cox has very similar college return stats as Ginn.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, that is why ERoyal is the better choice for KR in FA. He can play 4th WR as well. Plus he has very good speed. They should sign PGarcon or RMeachem and ERoyal to add to RM, MC and JMorg.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Eddie Royal could work. I think they should sign Laurent Robinson.

      • Ceadderman says:

HoF’er signing Garcon would be a mistake. Not that he’s not a solid Receiver. He’s 5’10 though. We have enough short Receivers on the Roster if Morgan gets re-signed. Garcon would be good if Morgan is out but he comes with a bigger cap hit than re-signing Morgan would generate. ;)

  10. LasVegasWally says:

Both Moss & Cox are low risk high reward players -there is a pattern here. and a good pattern. Last year there was the whinning annd complaining of how terrible Baalke/JH were in FA and their draft sucked.

One year later and the clones stilll haven’t learned. We got excellent people in the decision process who aren’t going to morgage the franchise. I can’t wait to see what other fine choices they come up with.

  11. MT9er says:

I know nothing about Cox, other than what is mentioned here and on a few other websites, but I trust Harbaugh/Baalke. What I like even more, however, is the feeling that is starting to emanate from the 9ers brass that they would rather lose a player a year early than pay him big bucks and be stuck with him 2-3 years too long. This seems to be the mentality of many of the more perennially successful front offices around the league (e.g. Eagles, Patriots, Ravens). And if/when they take fliers, the potential cost/benefit ratio is in their favor. Say what you will about Edwards or Moss, but neither cost the 9ers much, and both at least had the possibility of working out well.

  12. old coach says:

a slow CB oh boy!!!! i dont care how good your pass rush is if a CB get blown by at the line of scrimmage your D is in trouble

  13. old coach says:

i think baalke is making his first big mistake since taking over at GM by not resigning rogers

  14. TIM_ says:

    But Grant,
You yourself said above that Cox is slower than Ginn.Blinding speed is key in a dangerous return man.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Ginn’s light and can’t stay healthy.

      • AHHHH says:

light. exactly. fast. when ur only on returns thats 1 play a possesion much lwoer chance of inury. the value in ginn is extremely high to this team yet theyl still let him go its gonna show this year

      • Ceadderman says:

What? Grant, I think you’ve lost your mind. Ginn played two positions last year when he really should stick to Returning Punts/Kicks. He was injured twice last year. You might go back through your notes and check how many times he was injured before you make a definitive statement like this one. Balderdash!

      • Grant Cohn says:

He doesn’t want to stick to returning, he wants to be a top-3 receiver on a team, which is why I think he’s gone. He’s not going to get that from the Niners in 2012.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

TG has top end speed but he is not quick especially in small spaces and changing direction which is more key in KR duties.

    • old coach says:

kevin lynch has a different description of cox than grant does. he describes him as big, fast and smart

    • Medic One says:

Grant already said Ginn wants a receiver role. Returning kicks is a high impact short career position. It isn’t worth a rosted spot to keep speed without hands. That was the mistake that left the team short-handed at the receiver position last season.

      • AHHHH says:

ya well looked what happend first game ginn didnt play returns this year. we lost our SB chance pretty muvh purely because of that, if ginn wuda played there wud be no fumble, the field position wuda been there the kick would have went in an wed be holding the lombardi. just kissed that return average goodbye

      • Ceadderman says:

I don’t believe that Ginn wants what Grant says he wants. He might but I doubt it. I think that Ginn is fine as an emergency/option Receiver but he’s best used as a Returner.

To my knowledge only Grant and his Pops believe that Ginn’s primary focus is on being a Receiver. Til I hear it come out of the man’s mouth or someone directly related to the team, it’s pure speculation rumor and innuendo. ;)

      • Grant Cohn says:

That’s what Maiocco has reported about Ginn.

      • Ceadderman says:

I like MM, but c’mon Grant he speculates as much as anyone. I wouldn’t report what any beat writer says as fact. You should know better if you’re half the writer I think you could be. ;)

  15. NinersRoc says:

This is a pro move! The way NA got over paid by the Eagles last year will have everyone thinking twice before making a big payday for a 30+ year old CB. That means Rogers will be back on an affordable contract. And we still have cap space to either keep Morgan or grab another receiver before the draft.

    This is looking good!

  16. AHHHH says:

unrfotunately i think this signed carlos’s ticket outta town. which is dumb everyone forgets how soft our secondary was before carlos came, you really think brown an culliver are ready to be the only CBs back there? no way. it makes me feel better at least dashon will be back but he cant do everythin…an if their lettin carlos go they need to bring ginn back. cool this guy is a good returner but who was the one returning kicks over 20 yards every single time. TGJ. we need our special teams to remain on top

    • Ceadderman says:

I don’t think our Secondary was soft. Our Pass Rush wasn’t that good last year and that allowed a lot of late completions where the Opposing QBs’ avoid the Sack run around a bit and then make deep throws. No Corner in the league can stay locked on a Receiver that long. Also if the Opposing Run Game is effective the Corner has to worry about the Screen which leaves them vulnerable to the Double Go. Especially if they tend to freelance a bit to undercut routes.

I would much rather have kept Clements and brought in Rogers instead of going after a guy they would never in a million years have gotten to begin with. I like Nnamdi, but he played across the Bay. He knew how bad this Organization was prior to last year. I doubt that he was ever interested in being a 49er. He would be now though. What a difference a year makes ay? :D

  17. Ceadderman says:

I don’t know if Rogers is on the way out but I doubt Ginn would be. He’s an emergency Receiver and still has value as a Returner.

Also , Spencer is the expected casualty of this Offseason. I don’t see that changing. So signing Cox makes sense if you think about it in terms of who’s lost and who’s gained. ;)

I think Rogers is still going to come back to the 9ers. He’s gonna use the Rams and whoever else pursues him to figure out what his market value is and then come back to the 9ers and offer his services at a discount. He’s already said he wants to remain a 9er and that he’s willing to give the Home Town discount. I don’t see anything that alters that thought process.

    • NinersRoc says:

I agree! I think we’d be better off with Rogers and Culliver starting with Brown as #3 CB. I think Rogers comes back and competes for a starting spot and he and Cully win the top two spots. Losing spencer means nothing. We’ll have to see exactly how coach wants to use Brock in the secondary!

      • Ceadderman says:

An lookie thar, Baalke re-signs Rogers for 4 years $30 million. That’s pretty reasonable. :)

  18. MT9er says:

Slow down folks … As far as I can tell, no one as anointed Cox the starting CB and/or starting return man just yet. Who’s to say he was not signed to be a 3rd corner that can ALSO be a backup return man, whether it be behind Ginn or someone else they bring in via FA (Royal?) or the draft? Look what happened last year when Ginn went down … no one to back him up. And the fact that Cox can help in more than 1 aspect of the game is something that Ginn was never quite able to pull off. And as far as Rogers, would you rather pay him big bucks now and STILL be paying him when he’s 34, 35, 36, or trust the brass to find someone that they can work into the fold and not be overpaying for the next 4-5 years?

    • 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

True, look what happened when Ginn went down, no depth at punt returner. It also gives depth at CB. Makes alot of sense, plus he was a top CB coming out of college but had some off the field issues, reminds me of Ray McDonald when he came out dropped in the draft and now is a staple on the D-line!!

  19. old coach says:

the niners wont miss ginn on kick returns kendall hunter is an excellent KR but punt returns might be a different story

  20. 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

I like it, big upside for the players signed so far and not a huge risk, I also remeber people on here last year complaining about the free agents that werent brought in, and with the draft with Culliver, Aldon S. and even a DE turned FB in Miller and all those worked out. Edwards had some good plays prior to his injury and never got back in the fold.
So I trust what the front office has to offer for the present and the future of the 49ers.

  21. NinersRoc says:

Also, I think this puts us in position to fight for our own guys as they test the FA market.

Pre-season (i.e. Free Agency, draft, etc.) is ALMOST as exciting as the playoffs! You never know what’s going to happen on any given day.

  22. WildBill says:

We really have to wait and see about Carlos Rodgers. This is a pick not so much to cover Carlos Rogers, but Shawnte Spencer and Ginn. It remains to be seen if Cox will replace Ginn on punt returns.

  23. DS94everXev says:

    @Grant

    What happened to Wallace?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Mike Wallace? Nothing, he’s a restricted free agent and free agency doesn’t start until 1 pm.

      • DS94everXev says:

        ok.

Just wondering why his name seems to be absent. Not just from you, but ESPN as well.

      • 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

DS, watch nfl network all about free agency all day, i have been watching it sinse 9 this morning.

  24. oldschool9erfan says:

THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING…..people are already starting to freak out when FA really hasn’t started yet. The sparks start flying in 53 minutes, but that doesn’t mean the 49ers are going to make the first splash. The game is poker and we will wait and see who blinks first. Baalke did just fine last year when the deck was stacked against him, new coach, new schemes, no offseason and we did just fine. The offense will be better than last year and the defense could even improve. And Carlos Rogers isn’t gone yet, even though, it seems that he might. And as far as penny pinching goes, they paid Ahmad Brooks, Willis, VD big contracts but all of those players are in their prime. It would have been a no brainer to keep Rogers long term, but he’s 31 and Rogers wants to test the market. They can find another corner, there are a few of them on the market and they already picked one up cheap. If they don’t get another, we will get one in the draft. I have complete faith in Baalke and Harbaugh, their eyes are always on the prize…..THE SUPERBOWL PRIZE but they aren’t willing to mortgage the future like some other teams. They want to establish a nice long run.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oldschool

Why can’t the Niners sign CR for a 3 or 4 year deal? If 35 is the magical age where CB’s get slow, then offer a contract that gets us to that point or close. Then we can evaluate the situation then.

      • oldschool9erfan says:

Because he doesn’t want a 3 year deal. He wants a 5 year deal and wants to be paid like a Top tier corner. Look, he wants to get paid and that’s his choice because it will probably be the last big payday for him. You don’t think the 49ers are trying to resign him of course they are, but when he wants to be paid 10/11 million dollars a year that’s tough on everyone. Also I was Carlos Rogers biggest fan, I think he had a huge impact on the defense and was like another coach back there, but he also played behind the best front seven of his career, I’m not saying Rogers isn’t good and we don’t want him back but HE WANTS TO TEST THE MARKET. So you are saying overpay the guy even though he’s 31?

      • DS94everXev says:

See my 12:31 post oldschool for my answer.

  25. MidWestNiner says:

With these moves, it makes me wonder if they will go after Mike Wallace even though he will cost quite a bit of money.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @mdiwest

      Thanks for the Wallace post.

I was wondering if I was in the Twilight Zone for a while there. I remember him being a big possible name for us, and it seemed like people had forgotten about him.

I already have the Empire music in my head since JH came. I don’t need the Twilight Zones music starting up.

    • Grant Cohn says:

They’re certainly leaving a chunk of cap space for something. Could be Wallace.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“chunk of cap space for something”

        AS long term contract. LOL

      • DS94everXev says:

If the Niners could not resign CR because they need the money for Wallace, I would understand that. I won’t be all happy about it though.

Drop MC. Use that million for this year, and give that money that was going towards MC to CR. Add MC”s contract for next year to CR, and that will allow both Wallace and CR to stay. Two pro bowl players in exchange for dropping a non-factor WR. Any GM would take it if possible.

      • rebelscum74 says:

Yesss!!!!!!!! But probably not going to happen, Might bethe saints guard Hicks. Even this denver cb intrigues me. TB and JH are very methodical, when the draft roles around they will just pick the guy they have rated the highest, They seem to be kicking tires all over the place, I want wallace but the big new shiny toy might just be a new right gurad, Will that make our offensive line the highest paid:?

      • claude balls says:

They’re certainly leaving a chunk of cap space for something. Could be Wallace.

        Could be Manning.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @claude

Or the health insurance costs to insure PM with his neck and working behind our OL.

      • Ceadderman says:

Nah, don’t cut 15 and take the hit. The team has plenty of room to work with in FA this season.

15 is gonna be fighting for his job this year if Baalke brings in another couple Receivers through FA and the draft.

I’d be using the guy’s name but when you’re targeted 15 times in the Playoffs and you drop more than you catch(he caught 5, 4 in Division and 1 in Championship) then you’re fighting for your job. Especially when Webster locks you down in the Championship game.

      • jgwindsor says:

so what is the cap space it seems to have been restated and was not the original 33 million as proposed with the spencer purging….

i hear it is less than 19 mill now

      • Grant Cohn says:

We need to find out Cox’s cap number.

      • jgwindsor says:

plus the 1.6 mill dallas and washington donated to everyone

      • jgwindsor says:

i am for going after nicks for the OL

      • rocket says:

If Cox was signed for anymore than the vet minimum I’d be shocked.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        You’re probably right.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @cead

MC is costing you over 5 million this year and over 6 million next year (cap hit).

      • Ceadderman says:

@DS… I wasn’t saying cut 15. I was saying DON’T cut 15 and cause that would be a rather large Cap hit. ;)

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ceadd

If MC were to be cut as opposed to staying, he would save the Niners $1million or so. The next year roster bonus will be paid out this year.

But, that leaves 2013 with an open $6 million that would have gone for MC for something else.

So, if MC were cut, the Niners would save a million this year and next year have another 6 million to play with.

  26. old coach says:

lots of cap room. we have signed a WR. we have signed a CB. we can draft a guard. along with already having kilgore. could baalke possibly be setting up the biggest FA signing in 49er history…….Mario Williams

    • DS94everXev says:

      @old coach
I don’t know about Williams. He will cost $15 million a year. And he is coming off of two injury filled seasons. I’ll take Wallace over Williams.

Moss is old and won’t be an every down player more than likely. And Williams does not fill our largest need well (WR).

So, we will still have a hole at starting WR and pay a lot of money for a defender who is not our weak leak on the team.

    • BigP says:

Is he going to replace Aldon Smith or Ahmad Brooks? His position is OLB in the 3-4, which is what Houston ran last year for the first time. He is a better 4-3 DE.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ceadderman

A 1st round pick will cost you a couple million. Keep that in mind when you are talking about money we would spend.

And no college player has proven anything in the NFL. Wallace is a top 5 WR easily. Quite an upgrade over top 70 MC.

    • Ceadderman says:

I think Baalke is setting up to take Colston.

Colston is a complete Free Agent. Wallace costs more than money. He costs Pick(s) as well. Picks that would be better served in this draft which is thick with Receivers. Good Receivers.

If we took Wallace that costs at least the first. With a pick in each round of the draft and no added picks, there is no room for throwing picks around like you’re Daddy Gotrocks with a vault full of them.

If you want Fleener(many fans do) he’s not going to cost a late 2nd. He may not even drop to 30. So I doubt that Wallace is even on Baalke’s Radar. Certainly not for anything past the “oh what things might be like” wishlist.

Nope, Baalke is setting up for a Receiver who is going to be in real demand. Whether that’s Jackson or Colston or someone else who hasn’t been taken off the list of candidates remains to be seen but don’t expect it to be Wallace. If it is, hey great. But then Pittsburgh gains a pick at our expense. And one that we really shouldn’t be prepared to lose if we’re thinking long term building through the draft.

  27. jgwindsor says:

    just my opinion….

depending how much cap is left…..and before AS i hear it was reduced from earlier estimates….i hear it is around 19 million now…..

how much does the team need to leave clear for the draft….with picks at the back of each round….maybe only 4 or 5 mill…..

niners are probably targeting a tallish press coverage CB in the draft like a gilmore or jenkins…..they could trade up or down to address those needs depending how the draft unfolds….

or they could go with fleener anyways at 30…just to make sure the offense going forward next year (2013) without moss or DW can still have a tried and trued fall back position as a power based offense…and then move around in the second round (like up a bit to grab a dennard out of nebraska as a CB)…

so this could mean they may still need to go after an OG in free agency….or a bigger named CB in free agency like carr or finnegan ( yes i know they picked up cox but he is a minor pick) and address the OL in the draft as well….

heck rogers may still come back if the price is right but the rams do seem interesting going forward…..

  28. jgwindsor says:

grant maybe u can start a new blog at 1pm pst just to kick off FA

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Sounds good to me.

      • rebelscum74 says:

I know people like to argue and disagree but I am shocked how mad everyone gets at you and your dad, I like how you keep people from using too many profanities and other bad taste. I just appreciate this blog and the fun it brings!

      • TheLeftSchuh says:

        Grant-
Pure conjecture but without bringing back Ginn, do you worry about the ripple effect in the locker room? I really enjoyed your piece about how many of the players look up to him as the cool guy with a heavy presence. Not something I would have known or even considered before that blog. Your thoughts?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Yes, that’s a legitimate worry, because someone would have to replace Ginn’s locker room role, and from Anthony Dixon’s reactions the last couple days on twitter, that person would be Randy Moss. He’s the oldest guy on the offense and he’s a super star, and the younger players are thrilled to be on his team. It will be most interesting to see how Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and Frank Gore take to Moss.

  29. oldman49 says:

Appreciate how the comments were not all about the rape charge. So many jocks are falsely so charged – if they have money esp – that it’s wrong to brand guys as predators – especially considering the culture many were raised in.

  30. claude balls says:

A woman claims she was raped by Perrish Cox while she was passed out.

When questioned by police, Cox did not claim he had consensual sex with the woman. Instead, he claimed that they never had sex.

The woman became pregnant. DNA tests proved that the fetus was Cox’s child.

The jury found Cox not guilty.

    Anyone else troubled by this?

    • rebelscum74 says:

It is concerning, I wonder how much the position coach of the niners who was the db coach at denver in2010 had in this move, He has talent but Rape is a horrible, life changing claim and if it is true it would be difficult being a teammate of this guy.

Justice is what you can afford. The more money, the more the scales tip in your favor. No money? then right and wrong might not even matter.
The same DNA. That scale of justice was flipped upside down by fame and money.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @claude

It seems to me this guy is not going to be a starter. He is competing for a back-up job with another back-up.

He may not even make the team. If he does not, then I hope he meets Bubba in the slammer. And this loser will be making the same claim that this woman did. Ironic isn’t it?

I have the same feelings if he makes the team as well.

    • claude balls says:

      @rebelscum, DS:

Of secondary concern is the possibility that Goodell may suspend Cox.

    • BigP says:

Yes, this guy is a dirt ball. Even scarier, he could still face a civil suit from the alleged victim. This is the kind of person you don’t want on your football team, I was surprised by this signing.

This is a real head scratcher. This guy is the antithesis of a Harbaugh guy when looking at it on the surface. I’m not sure what to make of this signing. Does this affect Harbaugh’s credibility a bit after the big deal he made about the type of players he likes?

      • Grant Cohn says:

I believe it does. We’ll have to get to know Cox better.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I think Harbaugh is willing to give anybody another chance but no more. If you screw up that chance, then you’re gone.

    • 49erGirl says:

Yes, I’m not thrilled about this one.

Last year the Niners seemed very choosy about the personalities they brought into the locker room.

This year they seem more willing to take chances on guys with questionable character.

Not sure I like the trend, but we’ll see how everything plays out.

      • Ceadderman says:

I’m not worried. I’m pretty sure the thinking is that the Core group of players this team has would weather any storm the addition of Moss and Cox could create.

I doubt Moss is going to rock the boat. He wants a ring and as we saw with New England he can be a good player to have on the team.

Cox’s off the field issues weren’t related to the locker room. If you remember we have a couple guys who have had off the field issues. All Day even got a DUI in Florida after the season was over for us. So that stuff happens. ;)

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Yeah, Claude, I am concerned. I trust the Front Office more than I have for the past 10 years, but I’ve been a Niners fan not just because they’ve been successful, but because I could be proud of the guys on the team. If I wanted to cheer for thugs, I’d be a Raiders fan. (On second though, no I wouldn’t.)

That said, I’m hopeful that Coach Harbaugh is as respectful of our “heritage” of great teams and great men as he seems, and that he wouldn’t trade it or sell it out for a couple of wins or a good season. And I also hope that Moss and Cox realize what a sweet spot they’ve landed in, and can turn themselves around, ala Vernon Davis.

And yeah, I do realize that my concerns are woefully out of date, and many of the readers on this blog won’t even know why “character” gets brought up in a conversation about sports. Ah well…

      • claude balls says:

        @Rusty:

As a result of last year, I have developed a lot of trust in both Baalke and Harbaugh. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. They’ve earned that.

That said, I hope that there is more to the Cox story than has been reported. I have to imagine Harbaugh, Baalke and Cox (if he is presented to the media) are going to face some tough questions about the signing. Hopefully, their answers will tell us something that eases our concerns.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

        100%, Claude.

  31. Prime Time says:

Anybody else concerned that Baalke is trying to exert his power by signing wild cards and playing hardball? Just saying he still is an unproven GM.

    • ninermd says:

I am sorta. That’s a good point prime. And I’m starting to think he might be a billy beane type. I hope not.

  32. OpenMinded says:

Wow. Again, wow. Combustible Lemons. Who’s next? Janoris Jenkins? Reminds me of BW signing Lawrence Phillips. The last twelve hours have introduced a foul stench in the locker room. I recall reading a current Niner player stating that JH is okay with anything but hitting women. Ginn and Spencer were assets to the locker room in 2011. Who will keep Randy’s mouth shut and Cox’s Cox on a short leash? I’m ok with taking flyers but this ain’t your daddy’s Buick nor Renaldo Nehemiah nor Michael Carter. They were Olympians who hadn’t played much, or any, in college. But they were humble men of character – mighty men.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Niners who could check Moss if he gets out of line: Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Justin Smith.

      • Ceadderman says:

Don’t let Smith’s(11) quiet demeanor fool you guys. I think if Moss got out of hand Alex would handle it. He’s transformed himself in the Post Season. Before the Division game anyone ever thought Smith would be caught dead, yelling at the Opposing sideline?

Staley would be another guy that would handle Moss as well. ;)

      • bayareafanatic says:

Vernon, maybe Gore. Smith? Are you kidding….. Smith is meek…

  33. AES says:

C.Rodgers will find it hard to enjoy the type of success he had here. His loss, will be T.Brown’ and C.Culliver’ gain.
Our front 7 (Magnificent Seven) will wreak havoc on opposing QB’ this coming season. Also, I’m starting to believe that the 49ers may now look for a top notch DE/LB with there #2, or 3rd pick.

  34. Stan says:

wow-Ann Killion just totally backed down on Cox. Many times last year she called Rothlesberger a rapist. Cox?..oh, uh..aquitted…uh,we dont know the facts..
YES we do know facts Ann. Once again, the power of “insiders” to embarass themselves. As I have said-Comcast insiders hide more info then report them.

  35. ironsides says:

cox will kick 3000 field goals, who are you people ?

  36. JJJ says:

Could we start a trade for Joshua Cribbs campaign?

  37. Streetglide says:

This is some pretty crusty bloggage…

  38. Adam says:

Wonder how many gold helmets this Cox guy got?

This sounds an awful lot like the Kobe Rothlisberger case to me. Yeah… you did it scumbag but the prosecution just can’t get over the burden of proof.

Harbaugh’s big thing: “Don’t lay a hand on a woman.”

    Maybe… umm… hands weren’t involved?

This seems fishy to me after looking at the PFT brief on the legal case.

    • AES says:

Perhaps the team now has a new target in Cox to help take some attention (criticism) from Alex or Crabtree.
Why not vent your anger at the Org who signed him instead? That would make better sense.

      • Adam says:

I would have to hope that they have some inside info that we don’t have, some sort of mitigating circumstances like: “It was consensual but I lied because I was scared.”

If that’s not the case then I question the “truthiness” of the idea about getting character guys in here.

      • DS94everXev says:

Best not to speculate too much on this one Adam.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @AES

“…help take some attention (criticism) from Alex or Crabtree.”

Don’t forget VD. Besides AS, I think VD got attacked the most by fans. Followed by MC.

And nobody really came to VD’s defense either. Funny, because between the three of them, VD was the only proven player going into last season among the three.

  39. AES says:

DS, just for the record, I came to his defense. Why? Because he showed enough flashes although small to give me enough hope and patience that his day would come. Sort of the same way I feel about Crabtree and Alex. Alex made a strong case for himself last season and believe will do the same this season. I’m not throwing I’m the towel on Crabtree yet like many here have done.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @AES

Ok. I’m fine with you doing that. You have your opinion, I have mine.

      • AES says:

DS, I will say that this is a ‘do or die’ season for Crabtree. He must aquite himself or pay the consequences. But until then, he has my support.

      • DS94everXev says:

Specifically, what are you looking for AES?

I am looking for him to make impact plays in big games at critical times. I don’t so much care what stats he puts up, since those can hide somebody’s true skill and performance.

For instance, I can’t really expect MC to put up numbers like WR’s from those teams that throw the ball a good 40-50% or more than the Niners. That would be unfair.

But, I can expect him to not drop balls, and make critical plays at critical times just like those other WR’s do on passing teams. Those things have nothing to do with pass:run ratio. They have to do with a players ability. Both physical and mental to come up big in times of need. That is what I needed to see last year, and I really didn’t minus that one great play by AS and MC in Seattle. I need more of that.

    • oneniner says:

      ..”like many here have done.”……LIAR…..

  40. AES says:

    *I believe Crabtree*

  41. AES says:

DS, you say impact plays at a critical time. If he was a baseball player at the plate or a basketball player attempting the winning shot, I could follow your theory. But if he has to wait for someone to get him the ball your theory makes little sense. Put the ball in his direction and let him make play on it. Aikman did it with Irvin I’m waiting for Alex to do it with Crabtree.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @AES

When the game was on the line against the Saints, who got himself open?

      VD.

That is the kind of thing I need to see from MC. VD had to wait for the ball, just like MC and any other receiver. It is up to the receiver to do his job and get open. The QB can’t do that. MC needs to get open for AS to throw him the ball. And his speech after the game sure seemed to me like he thought he did his job. He didn’t. He needs to get open.

JR always found a way to get open when JM needed him. I need to see MC do the same. I remember watching a few games when both JM and JR were not playing very well. But in crunch time, JR found a way to get open and JM found a way to get it to him and let JR do his thing.

“The Drive” in Super Bowl XXIII was a thing of beauty. Every Niner playmaker did something to move the ball down the field for those 92 yards.

Compare that to the NO Saint final drive. VD was the only one. To be a winning team in the playoffs, we need more than one guy who does that. I don’t recall seeing a drive like that before. Where one guy kept getting open, but nobody else managed to do so at the end of the game. It was like the guy was on fire.

Come the NY Giants game, with 1:42 left or so, guess who the Giants were going to be all over? They were not going to let VD beat them. MC had to know that this was his time. The entire Giant defense was covering and thinking solely on VD. That was the time for MC to step up and make the Giants pay for thinking and doing that. He didn’t get open. AS had nowhere to go with the ball, and the MC destiny moment never happened.

      • DS94everXev says:

        P.S.

You still didn’t tell me what you are really looking for from MC.

What does he have to do to “not die”?

  42. AES says:

Make you happy for starters (lol).
    Sorry couldnt resist.

    1. Come to training camp on time.
    2. Come to training camp in great condition.
    3. Emerge as a force during training camp.
    4. Become a great route receiver.
    5. Eliminate dropped passes.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @AES

You missed another item on your list.

Come to training camp, and earn your position.

Just thought I would throw that out once more for good measure.

  43. AES says:

No, didn’t miss anything. He earned that last season as our #1 WR.
