49ers sign Mario Manningham, or Ham On Rye

The Niners just signed wide receiver Mario Manningham to a two-year deal, according to Mike Florio.

Just a few hours ago it looked like Manningham would sign with the Rams, but the Niners seem to have made a competitive offer for him, and Manningham seems to not be stupid.

Manningham is a good replacement for Joshua Morgan at flanker. He was the No. 3 receiver for the Giants last season, but he has the talent to be a No. 2 if Randy Moss is too old to start. Either way, the Niners have definitely upgraded their receiving corps.

With this signing, Trent Baalke probably will look to draft a guard with his first round pick. Right guard is the only hole left on the roster.

Manningham is a good signing, but the Niners want more. They want the hamless one. They want Manning, hold the ham, as in just plain Manning.

  1. Domingo says:

    Baalke, impressive again.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

    Manning to Manningham… Touchdown 49ers!!!!

  3. AES says:

Wow, the hits just keep coming!
    Go 49er!

  4. The Seth says:

Manningham is a relatively young recievers why did they only sign him for two years? Any idea how much money the contract is worth? Do you think this will factor into the Manning sweepstakes? What is your favorite color?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Yes, I think it’s all about the Manning sweepstakes. Manningham signed here because he wants to play with Peyton Manning. He signed for two years because that’s how many years he expects Manning to play. That’s my guess.

      • ninerz says:

        Good guess.

      • Jeremy says:

I don’t know if I agree that players are signing because they want to play with Manning. Manning hasn’t signed, and it’s still a long shot… Players know this.

      • Grant Cohn says:

John McClain just tweeted this: “Some of those who have pursued Manning the hardest believe he’s head to San Francisco. If so, congrats to the 49ers.”

      • Benitez says:

EXACTLY… pieces are falling in place…

*Should I do a Tebow Kneel Now or Later??.. Oh well, Tebowin’

    • Scott says:

Cap Brother, they need to keep funds if they can swing a Peyton deal.

      • Htesrepus says:

Yeah thats true, if they land Manning they’ll probably have to put most of that money on the back end of the contract.

  5. EB Niner says:

He’s a middle of the road WR, but that’s better than we had, so…until we get something better he’s our guy! I just hope we didn’t spend too much.

This also clearly means: There’s no Wallace in our future.

    • jon says:

Chill: we can’t have it all. No way can we afford Wallace and Peyton at the same time. Signing Manning may be a step closer.

  6. msclemons67 says:

How does Baalke keep doing this? Every time someone reports the 49ers “aren’t interested” or are “out of the race” Baalke pops up and stabs them.

    The dude is a ninja.

    • NickRow says:

      Baalke-Ninja is good analogy

    • Adam says:

The guy is good. Remember all the knuckleheads last year with their disparaging “Jed hired his buddy,” comments?

So far, he’s left McC in the dust, in my opinion. Also adds credence to the story about Baalke and Sing fighting over Taylor Mays at the draft and Baalke being right. The dude knows his stuff.

      • msclemons67 says:

Heh Adam – I was one of those knuckleheads. I thought York had hired one of the inmates to run the asylum.

        I’m glad to be wrong.

    • 23jordan says:

      MSC,

This is what happens when your deck is stacked. When you have all the cards, (defense, special teams, Elite QB) players will compromise for that limelight, that ring, that championship. Manningham would love to go back to back with the Manning Brothers. We are not done. We are going to get a rookie that is going to make you forget about Wallace. Manning will make you forget about Wallace. I’m telling you right now, watch out for all these receivers, especially MOSS!

  7. Keith "Loon" Moon says:

Trading up for DeCastro would be wise. Helps Gore and the QB (whomever that may be). Draft value chart suggests next year’s 1st round pick should get us to around 12 this year. He’s a beast.

    • Grant Cohn says:

True, they’re in a great position to trade up, because they have so few holes to fill. DeCastro would be worth the trade.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Could they insert Boone into the starting lineup and shift Davis to the RG position Grant? Or would or be better to draft a guard?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Interesting idea, but I get the feeling they want to leave the young Davis at RT. Probably better to draft the guard.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

They were talking on NFL network about the 9ers draft strategy if we signed Manning and 2 of them said Decastro and 1 said Alshon Jeffries. I was thinking at the time that Decastro would go somewhere in the middle of round 1. Trading up would be the only option. A reciever is out of the equation for our top pick but damn, I still want Fleener in a bad way!

      • Jack Hammer says:

What about Konz from Wisconsin? Does he have the ability to move from center to guard? He is a huge dude.

      • Faithful says:

I just checked 5 different player rankings and the highest DeCastro is listed is 13th. If he’s gonna go that high then I’d say let’s check option #2 cause I’m not willing to give up the farm for a right guard.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Option No. 2 is Peter Konz or Cordy Glenn.

      • Faithful says:

should say the lowest he’s ranked is 13th.

      • msclemons67 says:

I can see Cordy Glenn but the 49ers may have to leapfrog the Ravens to grab Konz. The Ravens really like him and Birk is near retirement.

      • oaktown49er says:

Cordy Glen gets knocked off the line way too easily. I’m not a beleiver.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Maybe they’ll wait on guard and just draft Coby Fleener.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Oaktown, remember, I before E, except after C.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

      That is my wish.

    • INJHWeTrust says:

What about Kilgore? I remember the team reporting that he was very impressive last year?

      • rebelscum74 says:

I heard that too! They seem to have a plan for everything. Glad Carlos Rodgers is coming back.

    • hightop says:

DeCastro would be fantastic. Konz plays center (PON) as well as guard that would a solid aquistion. Don’t forget Zeitler !

    • 23jordan says:

      Jack,

I’m on the record already. I love Koonz, and we don’t have to move to get him. He will be there for us.

  8. Jack Hammer says:

Grant, I know you were only 6 at the time, but this feels a lot like the great free agency haul of ’94. Fill up all the gaps with talent and go get a Super Bowl. Jed is channeling his inner Eddie D!

    • 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Hahahaha Grant is so young!! But it does seem like the front office has stepped up to the plate.

  9. James says:

I want to keep Smith with all my will and being, but I had to “LOL” at “the hamless one”

    • IliketheninersaLott says:

With Manningham on board Manning is just the maestro to conduct this symphony. Great Offense (with Manning- would still be ok with Alex but not great), Great Defense, and Great Special Teams?

If youre Manning, with Mario on board, how do you not jump at that team?

      • philly9er says:

I like Morgan better then Manningham but that could be cus I’m a Penn State fan too.

  10. IliketheninersaLott says:

Wow. cHAMpionship if we can get peyton.

Oh Man!ning, hold the eggs we got a new Sunday Special!

    • Jallen says:

You cant say championship—look at the Miami Heat. You have to earn it. We are setup for the SB with or without PM and AS. Now just have to earn it and stay healthy all season.

  11. Squashleg says:

Finally a player whom actually played in the NFL last year! We better get Manning!

  12. shawnrhod says:

Nice to see what winning does….and a great coach

  13. Avetron says:

Grant, if 49ers don’t get Peyton Manning, Do you think they’ll be ready to spend big in Mike Wallace and construct one of the best WR corps in the league? Or will they simply keep the money in the bank?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Yes, if they miss on Manning I think they’ll go after Wallace. It seems like they want to make a big splash.

      • Dominic says:

I don’t agree on the Wallace thought. Aside from Manning, they aren’t really making a big splash at all.

      • drsgrosse says:

They are conducting their off season to make a “big splash”????

I suspect they are trying to win.

        What an inane comment!!!

    • Jallen says:

Wallace is out of the picture, come on, get with reality. If they dont get PM or AS, they still need to a QB. If they go with JJ or CK or DJ then maybe they have more for Wallace…but how do you get wallace when you just got MM and RM? What are we going to play 4-5WR sets…theyre set at WR now.

  14. ninerz says:

That’s a preclude to Manning coming. Two year contract, absolutely. He signed it to raise his value with Manning. He wouldn’t sign it with Smith. I think it’s a done deal with Manning.

  15. Latino Heat says:

This guarantees Manning. Crabtree, Moss, Vernon, Gore, and now Mario, whooooo dogggyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Fred P Soft says:

If we sign Alex smith we will have plenty of cap space to sign a very good RG in free agency and use the draft to build depth. With the signing of Manningham it pretty much takes us out of the Manning sweepstakes. We had 18 million. Now(IMO of coarse) im thinkin we have around 13-14 million. Smith needs to sign. We are set and ready for our SB run.

  17. Tree Limb says:

Man thats some interesting spin going on here…lets see Moss Crabtree Manningham…looks like receiving is set…..We need a pull the trigger type of QB and Alex you ain’t the kinda pull trigger QB the Wides are gonna want and need…except for Crabtree..Major let down ass a player he is looking more like a 4th rounder than a top 10…especially when it money time Crabtree is now Number 3

    • Avetron says:

Well, Smith connected some incredible passes with Vernon, so Alex isn’t the problem. Give him more quality receivers and he’ll look elite.

  18. Fred P Soft says:

We are not going after Wallace.

  19. Matt says:

Wow, if Manning goes to SF, I feel especially bad for Alex. 49ers look like they will be better at wide receiver this year. That having been said, it appears that SF gave Alex a reasonable offer and you can hardly blame the 49ers for pursuing Manning when Smith was dragging his feet. The idea that Harbaugh is damaging Alex’s delicate psyche or that he was untruthful with him is rediculous. Harbaugh said he wanted Alex. They made him a pretty good offer of 8 million per year. Smith did not sign and SF began looking at alternatives.

  20. Prime Time says:

    Latino, don’t forget D-Love and a top 3 defense!

  21. Tree Limb says:

People here is SoCal call the 49ers mean but in the best way you can say it… They say it like I wish our team was the San Francisco 49ers I grin from Ear to Ear I have taken a lot of crap from this team less crowd Next year should be just a great way to spend 3 hours!

  22. Squashleg says:

I don’t feel bad for Alex Smith at all. He should’ve signed the contract when he had the chance. He is nothing more then a quality back up. In Manning we trust!!! (Hopefully)

  23. Faithful says:

I wonder what changed Manningham’s mind, why didn’t he sign a deal while he was here?

  24. Crab15 says:

The Dynamic Duo (Harbaugh/Baalke) strikes again!
Now we eagerly wait for the Motherlode!

  25. Crab15 says:

Does anyone miss the Nolan/Singletary/McCloughan days?

    • msclemons67 says:

I miss them like I’d miss a boil on my arse.

      • Crab15 says:

msclmon – lol, hey I’m sippin on some “Sierra Nevada seasonal Ruthless Rye IPA” have you tried it? Delicious (6.6%)! On sale at rite-aid lol! I get all my suds there bro, ya gotta save a buck or two these days man! I’m not as wealthy as Hofer. :-)

      • msclemons67 says:

I haven’t tried the Ruthless Rye yet. I’m always game for a new IPA – I’ll keep a lookout for it. Thanks!

      • Adam says:

I was going to go with a rash. Good call. :P

    • big biner says:

      lol, um nooooooooooo

    • BigP says:

I do miss the comedy of Singletary speaking to the press. He’s the only person I know that can say “I’ll say this, about that” and “When it comes to that, I’ll say this” in the same response to a single question. Dude was funny, with an “F.”

      • rebelscum74 says:

I know Singeltary is a proud man, so I wonder what he thinks of all this, he should of listened to Balke though, You are right, His quotes were great, harbaugh is too cold and Calculating for anything great, Gotta love the results and just being relevant!

  26. big biner says:

Manning , manning, manning, manning, manning mmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg, I’m starting the chant!!

  27. Hov says:

    9ers!!!!! We are back!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Laxer818 says:

At this point, Manning truly would be crazy to sign anywhere else. He might have two or three good years left before retirement, meaning that the time for him to win is now, and only now. The Niners have the best D in the league and are poised for a Super Bowl run — with or without Manning. How could any reasonable person in Manning’s position consider Tennessee or Denver to be viable alternatives?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Can anyone make a devil’s-advocate argument on behalf of the Titans? Football reasons only.

      • BigP says:

Absolutely not. The texans are the best team in that division. The Niners are truly Super Bowl caliber.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Great point. He can’t choose the Titans because there’s no guarantee he can take them to playoffs in that division.

      • msclemons67 says:

Manning might get offered the seat of Governor of Tennessee if he signs with the Titans. He is revered in that state after he took the Vols to a national championship.

Tennessee is also his wife’s home state.

There are definitely some emotional ties to Tennessee for Manning.

Of course, the downside is that it is… Tennessee. *dueling banjos*

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I’ll try! If there is anyone that faced 8 and 9 man fronts as much as Gore last year it was CJ2K. With Britt back and Manning under center that goes away and gives the Titans a great run game to take some pressure off Manning. They also have Nate Washington, Damien Williams(who stepped up pretty well in Britts absence) and the speedster Donnie Avery who ran a 4.27! Manning will make these recievers better and the defense will be middle of the pack. A high scoring offense makes up for a mediocre defense. Manning had that for years. He returns to his state where he played college cuz he doesn’t want to let those fans down! 9ers are still a better choice but thats the best I can do!

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Thanks for humoring me.
Aren’t the Texans still better than the Titans with Manning? Would he sign on to a Wild Card team at best?

      • Laxer818 says:

Msclemons: That last line gave me a good chuckle.

Grant: If we’re talking football reasons only, there’s no way anyone could justify picking Tennessee over SF. And all this nonsense about Bud Adams offering Peyton a “lifetime” job boggles my mind. We’re talking about Peyton Manning — a multimillionairre and one of the greatest football players of all time. He will be able to do anything he wants, whenever he wants, wherever he wants after he retires. He doesn’t need to worry about any of that now. If he is truly a competitor — and I believe that he is — he will surely go to the team that has the best chance of winning it all. And there is no dispute that the Niners are that team.

I don’t believe in jinxes, so I’m just going to come out and say it: Manning will sign with the Niners by Tuesday. He would be insane not to.

      • OpenMinded says:

It’s tough to replace a legend so he might want to go replace Hasselback instead.

      • OpenMinded says:

He doesn’t want the pressure of CK chants at Candlestick. Jake Locker is no threat to him.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

Although the Texans lost to the Raiders at home and to the Manningless Colts in Indy, They seem to be a bit inconsistant still but yes, I think they’d still be better than the Titans. Manning would be a fool to not sign with the 9ers!

      • BigP says:

        MS,
Manning didn’t win a National Championship, Tee Martin did. Manning’s team got their tales kicked by Nebraska the year before.

      • 23jordan says:

        Grant,

The Titans just lost their beat cornerback, Finnegan. Their defense was never good with him. Chris is a shadow of himself in the backfield. The special teams in nothing special and Schwaub(sp) is coming back and now they have a healthy team. Their(Houston) defense is top notch. How are the Titans going to compete with them. Titans don’t need Manning, they need weapons on defense. Corners mainly and a pass rusher.

      • AES says:

Thanks for humoring us with this question Grant (lol), but posing it as a devils advocate deserves a response.

I have two reasons that have validity:
#1. Having played in the AFC for 14 seasons Manning knows every defense.

#2. With the Titans Manning will be given total offensive autonomy.

Having made that case, these two pluses pale in comparision with the positives of playing on the 49ers.

I have to believe that Harbaugh/Baalke not only watched PM’ workout last Tuesday, but assured him that the 49ers give him the best chance at a Superbowl and are showing their desire for him by being pro-active with Moss and now Manningham signings.

Aside from the SB ramifications, the 49ers are setting the table for Manning while the other teams still in the picture are not.

    • BSofSF says:

Manning would be crazy to not pick the 49ers, but I can’t say the reverse. There is big risk in the Niners breaking the bank for Manning. Use the money to grab Mike Wallace instead. Start Kaepernick or pick up Flynn if Smith is so bad (which he’s not). But please don’t spend the next five years’ money on a 36 year old with fused neck vertebrae. Manning is a class act and will be a Hall of Famer, but this idea he’s going to be the old Manning is troubling. I don’t see it.

      • Laxer818 says:

Therein lies the risk. You hit it on the nose, BS. It is high risk, high reward. It’s that simple.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I dont see it as a big risk. Several Drs. have said he’s at no more risk than any other QB in the league. The salary cap is gonna dramatically increase over the next couple years and teams next year have to spend like 93% of the cap anyway. There will be no more of teams starting the season at 30 million under the cap anymore. If the cap goes up to 150 mil., you’re gonna have to spend 140 mil. Simple as that so lets just sign him and go get a few Superbowls already!

      • philly9er says:

People keep saying Manning is a class act but did’nt he sign his contract last year knowing he wasn’t gonna be able to play?

    • INJHWeTrust says:

Lol, I love how the guy who is suppose to know most about football, the guy who writes articles for a living is asking other people to make a devils advocate argument for Peyton to go somewhere else. I bet the info he gathers from others insights will be posted as his original thoughts. Keep up the crappy, half assed work Cohn.

    • rebelscum74 says:

And they have a great young line!

      • Jallen says:

Chris Johnson could not run through that horrible OL all year…they sucked rhino balls. Manning dies behind that Tenn OL and Locker is starting by week 6…Locker should be starting by Week 1. Locker was very impressive last year when you was in the game…you roll with that. You dont draft a QB #8 that looked great out there and throw him on the bench for 3-4 years behind PM.

  29. Benitez says:

ESPN: “49ers are on the board”
49ers: “There’s Nobody Else that We Need.. hey baalke.. let’s go get some Taco Bell”..

  30. Joseph says:

Coby fleener is there at 30 we take him, I dont see guard there, remember we drafted daniel kilgore 5th round out of appalachian state and the staff seems to like him. WE DO NOT MAKE BIG SPLASHES IN FA! Mannings the wrong move, wallace is a no grant, cmon. We want manufacture 49ers, not import them.

    • INJHWeTrust says:

I know right, Justin Smith, Carlos Rogers and Donte Whitner were such garbage moves, because we want to manufacture niners not import them, Harbalke will make the right moves have faith. What is your definition of Splash in FA? Signing Randy Moss? Signing Mario Manningham? Resigning Carlos Rogers? Going after Peyton Manning? what’s a big splash to you?

  31. Charlie Hustle says:

Harbaugh: “Taco Bell???…. Who has it beeettter than Us!!!!

  32. Woodsidegil says:

    Crab 15,

The other day I was speculating (not making a prediction) that the JH and TB might just blow up the wide receivers and even trade Crabs in the upcoming draft. This was even before signing Moss. You sarcastically responded to me by referring to JH continually praising Smith and the hard working Crabs during the season and implying he wouldn’t say one thing and do another. Still fell the same way now that he’s pursuing Manning and has signed Moss and Manningham? If my speculating comes to pass what side dish would you like with your roasted crow?

    • Crab15 says:

Woodside – I’m all in for trading Crabtree if it improves the team bro. He’s our #3 receiver now in my book.
I was just repeating what Harbaugh said all year.
Your argument is valid, great point.

    • 23jordan says:

      Wood,

Crabtree is not going anywhere buddy. Our wide receiving core is about to blow up instead of getting blew up. Watch what type of year Crabtree has this year. You will come to the realization that he just needed a QB.

  33. EdgeOFChaos17 says:

Grant any idea if its true. “Upon further review, @profootballtalk was first to report the news of Mario Manningham’s deal in San Francisco. Ruling is reversed.” I can’t seem to find anything on it. But someone making that comment on another website.

    • INJHWeTrust says:

Lol was it Sneak on Facebook? they were stating that another site reported it first not that the signing was wrong.

  34. TIM_ says:

    Wood:
we lost edwards and picked up Moss.We lost Morgan and picked up Manningham. status quo so far with Crabs still bring a main cog in the offense. Unless they do trade him and get Wallace? But I doubt that.

    • rebelscum74 says:

I was very ticked off with losing morgan because he is a great blocker, Manningham not so much, but their appears to be a shift in philophsy as if we get Manning we will throw more, Crabtree is the best blocker when it comes to manningham, moss and himself.

  35. NickRow says:

During the Super Bowl, Cris Collinsworth was very critical of Manningham’s route running. Let’s hope he works on that part of his game during the off season. Also, for what it’s worth (probably not much), here are his combine and pro-day 40 times:

Pro day: 40 Yrd Dash: 4.42
    Combine: 40 Yrd Dash: 4.59

    http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=57291&draftyear=2008&genpos=WR

    • Grant Cohn says:

His 10-yard split was identical on both runs. He’s very quick.

      • msclemons67 says:

At the nerdapalooza in Boston this year Paraag said the final 20 yards time was the most important. His reasoning was that the WR would have to make his move well after the initial acceleration.

      • Grant Cohn says:

He ran a 4.42 at his Pro Day – I’m sure he blazed those last 20 yards. I bet his Combine time was a fluke. He looks 4.4 fast in games to me.

  36. TIM_ says:

    MS :
Grant said FOOTBALL reasons for PM to choose Tenn, not personal reasons.

    • msclemons67 says:

The personal reasons are important though TIM. Manning has a lot of ties to Tennessee.

Purely football the 49ers are the only choice.

      • Adam says:

I’m re-thinking my position on that. I think he’d be foolish to turn down the Niners, if we’re truly in the hunt because we probably have the most to offer but… Look at Denver and the AFC West. Who’s challenging there? KC fans have posted that they’d take Smith over Cassell, Oakland sputters and San Diego is living with the threat of ultimate doom if they don’t pull it together this year.

Denver got pretty far with Tebowmania. Pretty solid defense, Elway is a buddy, tons of cap space.

Tennessee is also not unattractive in its own way. Most of that would be personal, wife and family connections and all that. Stake in the franchise after it was all over, etc., would keep Manning in the game. I’ve heard several commentators say that Manning will never leave the game, he’ll be in it in some fashion like – not unlike Harbaugh.

There’s no guarantee Manning wins anywhere. People need to manage their expectations. The age and declining production (nearing league average numbers,) the injury and tons of surgeries…

One of these teams is going to severely overpay, the more I look at this – in my opinion. At best he gives someone a shot to get over the hump, at worst this an act of desperation. And, compared to the other two teams, we’re not really desperate, we were two muffed kicks from the big game – and we would have torn New England up from what I saw.

      • rocket says:

Adam as usual well said. I’m at the point where I don’t think we can lose either way. We get Manning and we are instant favorites to win a SB. If we don’t, Smith comes back and they continue on the road they started last year. I don’t buy for a second that Smith will say F you to the Niners or will sign somewhere before Manning makes his decision. His best contract offer and playing situation is with the Niners if Manning goes elsewhere.

I’m just going to sit back and watch it unfold. If anything it has made this offseason pretty interesting.

  37. Niner_Noe says:

Seems to me that Balke and Harbaugh are making all the right moves. I was sorry to see Costanzo and Morgan leave, however their replacements appear to be upgrades. With respect to Alex Smith, I like him, and we can win with him. But lets face it. He is no Peyton Manning. If we land Manning, we will go deep in the playoffs and probably win it all with our STUD defense and a DEADLY offense. Is it August yet? GOOO NINERS!!

  38. Prime Time says:

Hey Tim maybe the FO is loading up to blow Lazy Crabtree a nice stiff pink slip. Draft a WR at 30 and develop him, probably same production as Crabtree under Moss and Mario and Vernon so why not go cheap with a draft pick and let Crabtree walk.
As for Manning, he’s begging Jed for 90 million and Jed’d saying, just sign Alex and I’ll give you a little more $ for some tier 2 free agents. How does that sound?

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Prime

No assurances the drafted WR is better. Likely he will be worth it production per dollar amount.

I’d rather dump Crab in favor of getting Wallace.

Wallace, Moss, VD. Three of the fastest guys in the NFL. Don’t know where Manningham fits in. If KW is still here, he is another quick player, with KH out of the backfield.

Not many defenses outside of SF can beat that.

Don’t need to have PM for this to work.

      • 23jordan says:

        BS,

How did you get off of suicide watch?? Crabtree is not going to get ALEXED. He is going to be here until his contract expires, maybe longer. Get used to it. Bet on it, book it. Guess who is the HATER now. Bit you in the AZZ!

      • Adam says:

        Hey Jordache,

Why don’t you leave DS alone. You’re not a big bad keyboard bully so let it lay. It’s not like your credibility is worth a damn so just knock it off. The guy can have an opinion.

      • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

        Adam
Everyone’s entitled to his opinion. You are opinionated, but unlike DSL, you manage to make your points known without sounding like a pompous arse. Thank you for that, Adam.

    • Latino Heat says:

90 million doesnt sound good especially for a 36 yearold neck injury, slow QB. If healthy though with those new WR’s look out. Alex might be a cheaper alternative. I also don’t think his confidence will be affected because he either knew all about this happening, (rememeber Manning reportedely reached out to the organization first) or he really believes he is worth 10 million per.
If not maybe Smith f uped and should have signed the contract but can’t imagine his agent letting him not do that and take the money and run. If it was 7, bad move, otherwide maybe its a number nobody really knows. Point is, the media is not helping. Who breaks the story first:
Maiacco, NFL Network, ESPN, or Grant Cohn?

    • Jack Hammer says:

Only if they plan on bringing in Wallace. Otherwise you are completely hedging your bets on Moss as an every down starter.

They now have Crabtree, Moss, Manningham and K Williams as wide receivers. You only trade Crabtree if you plan on bringing in 2 rookies, which I don’t see happening or bring in Wallace & a rookie.

      • Latino Heat says:

Thats very possible, cut or trade Crabs, pick up another journey men WR, possibly draft one at 30, and again in the 3-4th round, you start fresh on offense.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jack

        So,

For weeks you have nagged me about getting Wallace at the expense of MC, now you suggest the same thing I have. I asked you if you would dump MC if necessary to afford MC. You replied along the lines of “Why do you dump your best WR, and you won’t save much money?”

What is the difference between your post and mine, and what happened to your previous argument for keeping MC?

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Crabtree isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Sorry little buddy. There are still plenty of questions around the WR position because they are still short by 1 maybe 2 guys depending on how KW works into their plans.

With the additions of Moss and Manningham he will easily be able to slide to the slot in 3 receiver sets, which he will excel at. Add in the dimension of a QB that can hit him in stride and MC could be set up for a break out year.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jack

AS was able to hit JM, VD in stride. Maybe MC needs to work on his stride.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Again you show either, a) your lack of knowledge, or b) how your agenda is blinding you to reality.

Of the 4 passes that AS completed last year, 2 were to Davis, the other 2 were to Crabtree, and on top of that how many yac yards did we lose by the receivers needing to jump out of their shoes to catch a high pass?

    • Bayareafanatic says:

No need. Now with. Real QB Crabs will flourish.

    • Jallen says:

Very interesting thought…a trade of crabtree could be a very real draft day scenario. Crabtree plus a pick or two to a WR needy team to draft DeCastro. Or just Crabtree for a pick or 2 in this draft or next. I still would love Fleener and his versatility and overall talent plus a RG or safety all in rd 1-2. We are setup so well to have unlimited options in the draft. So maybe possibilities, would be hard to go wrong with any combo of picks in rds 1-2. We are in NE’s category now for the draft imo

  39. 7x7er says:

I am super-impressed with Balke and Harbaugh. Those guys are ninjas. They seem to just be so patient in free-agency; letting some guys walk, not jumping on the hottest guy and over-paying, finding value. I love how they are spreading the money around, building a really strong team. Nobody is getting a crazy contract that makes you shake your head. You have to be a cool customer to not flinch when so many GMs are writing huge checks. I think whoever the QB is next year will be playing on a very strong team. If Peyton Manning’s #1 priority is winning, talk about a great opportunity. It is just so rare that a team of this caliber doesn’t have the starting QB locked down already. I would say of the 2011 playoff teams, only the 49ers and Broncos don’t have a guy they consider to be the franchise guy going forward, and the Broncos sort of backed into the playoffs.

  40. Woodsidegil says:

Well said Crab15, we’re on the exact same page. Anything that the FO does to win is OK in my book.

  41. AHHHH says:

i love how we have the conservative FA approach but still have the common sens eto make the neccesary moves, which was get WRs with experience to replace what we didnt have at all last year.YES FINALLY. iv been waiting for this headline all week, manningham was our best option an they did it hell yes. ya he hasnt put up huge number cuz hes been behind guys that have. SUPER BOWL

  42. Prime Time says:

@Latino, you must be new if you think G. Cohn is gonna break this story letting alone any breaking Niner news, that was funny nice try!

    • Latino Heat says:

Not sure what you mean Deion?

      • 23jordan says:

        Latino,

Prime time’s other screen name is Michael Crabtree. He doesn’t like deon. He called himself Prime Time origionally because he likes to watch T.V at 8:00 at night.

  43. Frank says:

I was excited when he visited Niner HQ the other day…but disappointed when he left so soon. He’s one I’ve been targeting for awhile now…he just makes plays. It also doesn’t hurt to upgrade the receiving corps right now…to give Peyton more to think about. Moss, Manningham, Crabtree…add Fleener and a top OG and our offense should have a vastly improved passing attack. Would also love Doug Martin or Robert Turbin to beef up the RB corps. Gore’s showing more wear ‘n tear and it’s time to draft another stud to eventually replace him. Harbaalke is really something…pretty awesome.

  44. Neal says:

All of this drama with Smith and Manning, proves even more how much I respect Balke and Harbaugh. These guys want to win and win now, yea Harbaugh pulled Alex little fragile chainsaying he is a elite QB, but so what, tough crap, Alex is set for life with his one good season, if I performed like him in my sales position I would of been fired 3 years ago.

I give big props in getting Moss and Manningham, Smith career is over in SF, and if Harbaugh can fix Smith to a serviceable C plus QB, he can do that to Kaep, if we don’t get Peyton. I won’t loose a wink of sleep if we don’t get Peyton, because the Niners are in good hands, and I have to respect Jed, to stay out of the way and do what he does best and that is getting the Niners a new spanking stadium, and thank god we don’t have big egomaniac owners like Daniel Snyder or Jerry Jones.

  45. Brodie2Washington says:

I think its fantastic we got Mario Manningham. I will know exactly how I feel once the contract terms are disclosed. Morgan got 6M a year (I think 7.5 guaranteed). If Mario’s contract is not much bigger, I think we did great.

  46. TIM_ says:

Heat: Dont worry , Alex is plan b or c. PM is vastly superior to Alex, so as a fan we should all be pulling for Manning to come here. With Pm we are a dangerous offense, with alex we are not, period.

  47. TIM_ says:

We will be better this year with any qb,alex included.but why settle for a 2nd tier qg like alex when a star is available. this is not a lockout situation any more and jh is not wanting to settle any more.

  48. Mike says:

Can anyone say Super Bowl 2013 and onward!

  49. Crab15 says:

One thing is certain. Momentum is on our side!

  50. TIM_ says:

Heat: Of course, dont be silly.

  51. TIM_ says:

If you want mediocre then pay the 24 and forget PM. As for me since its not my money I say spend the monry and get a qb who can really play ball !

  52. TIM_ says:

Why get rid of their best receiver last year ? Crabs is a very good receiver and with PM he will be a first down machine.Last year they had the same number of receivers to start the season, they dont have any to spare right now.

    • Shawn says:

I think some of the receivers were only as good as their QB was. When Alex throws the ball to the recivers feet how can they catch the ball? The reason Smiths INT’s were down this year was because he took more sacks so de did not risk turning it over. Look I like rooting for my niners no matter who is Qb but to have a QB who can read a D very well and and throw to recievers before they break is something else that would be enjoyable to watch.

  53. Joseph81_84_88_89_94 says:

Cmon now fellas, lets stop using “hedging” as an arbitrary distinction, if you do not know what hedging a position is, then shut your mouth.

  54. Crab15 says:

Tim – If we land PM, how do you think Montana would feel about it?
We all know Steve Young’s all for it.

  55. Faithful says:

I don’t think this puts us out of the WR business with our #1 pick. Moss is a one to two season player max. Crabtree and Manningham can both vie for the slot and Z positions. Kyle Williams is also a slot or Z man. Currently Moss is the only player that qualifies as a X receiver and we still don’t even know if he can play anymore or not.

We still very much need a young tall receiver that can develop for a year or two while Moss is still playing and then become our X when he’s gone. Is Streeter to far of a reach at #30?

    • rebelscum74 says:

But we can now just go best athlete available, we have a strong verteran team with some young great pieces. Have Fun.

    • hightop says:

Streeter is a reach at 30th(projected 3/4th rounder along several other decent looking WR’s-Jones;Toon;Quick and later McNutt.)Ninja Balke will attend- don’t fret .

  56. TIM_ says:

    Crab15:
I dont know Joe but I can tell you that if he is still a Niners fan that of course he wants PM to come here.Every real fan does,Ifthey want the best for the TEAM,instesd of just one player( alex).

  57. TIM_ says:

Most writers are speculating that Kilgore will compete with a fa vrt at rg. Maybe they draft the Stanford tavkle and start him out at rg?

  58. Crab15 says:

I wonder if Manningham was influenced by the University of Michigan connection with Harbaugh? Must have helped.

  59. TIM_ says:

If you feel that way about Grant, then why are you here? ha, busted !

  60. TIM_ says:

Are you talking back and forth to yourself ?lol

  61. EdgeOFChaos17 says:

“AdamSchefter tweeted: Upon further review, @profootballtalk was first to report the news of Mario Manningham’s deal in San Francisco. Ruling is reversed.” What the hell does he mean by that?

    • Adam707 says:

In an earlier tweet he gave someone els credit for reporting it. Then corrected it. It has nothing to do with the signing itself

    • 49erGirl says:

It means he got scooped and didn’t notice until after he claimed to be the one breaking the news.

  62. robwco says:

Great signing :) , maybe he gets the slot?

  63. brian says:

if peyton manning can make Austin collie look good imagine what he can do w/ Manningham & crabtree!

  64. Sukhi711 says:

    Grant,
Only way Manning goes to Tennessee cuz he gets piece of the team after his playing days are over. But at the same time I wonder if such a promise would be violation of salary cap rule.

  65. D.Clark says:

It’s really very simple, (saw this as a comment on espn and liked it as it’s right on the money)

If It’s about the money – Peyton signs with Denver
If it’s about sentiment – Peyton signs with Tennessee
If it’s about Super Bowls – Peyton signs with San Francisco.

Where’s his mind at? We find out in under 48 hours.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Clark, actually the Titans were 9-7 last year and just missed the playoffs. If PM, they make the playoffs he is KING. He joins the 9ers and misses the playoffs or is one and done, he is mud.

  66. eastcoast9er says:

espn just reported that alex smith is flying to meet with dolphins on monday wth is goinng on ?is he foing this because peyton is coming or he feels pissed on /

    • bayareafanatic says:

      He’ll be flynn’s backup…

      • Sean in Canada says:

Bay, I’d think Matt Moore would be Flynn’s backup. Perhaps Flynn is leaning more towards Seattle and the Dolphins are onto plan C?

    • 23jordan says:

I absolutely do not care. He’s not our anchor anymore. Great guy, not so greay QB. Good luck and good bye Alex.

  67. oneniner says:

…Alex in miami…….wht if Manning signs with another team…….we lose big time…..

    • oneniner says:

….From the beginning, it’s been clear that the Manning chase is going to be done Manning’s way……..which means he his going some where he can own the offense………

this is not good news for the niners……as much as I won’t mind manning but very skeptical of our chances to make the playoffs……it is a risk that could set the franchise back……

if Alex bolts to miami….manning signs with denver(remember denver was his only visit – everyone else came to him)……..we are farked!!!!!!

      …kiss the playoffs goodbye……

    • Chicago49er says:

      Flynn will be Miamis QB

  68. kansas49er says:

Boy I sure hope this works out trying to be a super bowl contender this way. Didn’t work so good for the Philadelphia eagles did it?

    • oneniner says:

…i don’t think it ever worked for any one……the best i could think of is KW got AZ to the SB but didn’t win…….

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Worked for the 49ers in 1994-95:

        Deion Sanders
        Ken Norton Jr.
        Bart Oates
        Ricky Jackson
        Roy Barker
        Richard Dent
        …. the list goes on.

They shuffled up the team and a lot of their new free agents became starters or saw significant playing time. Several of them were at the tail end of their all-pro careers. Didn’t hurt team chemistry at all, in fact they played awesomely together. It all matters who you pick up, and how it all fits together.

  69. robwco says:

LOL oneniner your in panicmode i guess but hey its Manning or CK we will improve a lot from from Smith so be glad cuz our HC and FO know what they are doing

    • Latino Heat says:

Why does everyone have so much faith in Kap, he did not look anything remotely ready last year and I doubt an offseason will help. Add the fact he has some very strong personalties on offense to appease, he wont be ready til 2 years, gotta let him develop.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Latino, the faith in Kap is the same reason why some wanted Nate Davis or Troy Smith or anyone else. They don’t like Alex Smith. Those people are obviously good at evalutating talent what with the former both lighting it up, i assume, somewhere that isn’t the NFL.

      • Adam says:

Ah the good ol’ Nate Davis and Troy Smith love.

Those were the good old days.

      • 23jordan says:

Apparently, JH and TB didn’t like Alex as much as Alex thought either. Nobody likes a bad QB except his family. Sorry to say, but true.

    • Andrew says:

      WE WANT CARR!!!

  70. Stan says:

Jim,using the rare theorum superior to Moneyball sabermetrics…The Pied Piper method.

  71. BennyBlanco says:

WOW!!! Alex Smith is headed to Miami 2day. All is changing in 49er-land

    • Adam says:

Probably a knee-jerk reaction from his agent. Greasy-looking dude is taking some heat.

“Ooooh bad publicity, I may get fired, maybe I should set something up for one of my other clients.”

  72. NickRow says:

I trying to make sense of PM and AS developments. The timeline goes something like this. JH pumping up AS. Colts release Manning. JH still pumping up AS. AS states in an interview that he expects to sign with the Niners. Free agency starts. Alex still unsigned. A few days go by, AS still unsigned. Then news leaks that JH and GR worked out PM and gave him a physical. This may explain the stall in AS signing. Now there’s news that AS is considering firing his agent (see link below) and has a visit scheduled with Miami.

Here’s my take. It sounds like the Niners offer was on the table up to the start of free agency. PM was still on the market and AS was getting no action from other teams, therefore the Niners stalled on the AS front and pushed hard for PM.AS feeling betrayed lashed out at Condon and is now seeking employment elsewhere.

    http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/niners-talk/post/Report-Smith-considers-firing-agent?blockID=671908&feedID=2800

    • Tutomate says:

I think it was like this.

Nines make Ian offer before free agency. Alex wants to take it but agents says no wait it out I can get you a better deal with the niners. So free agency starts and PM reaches out to the 49ers. The FO is like hell yes we’d like Payton so they work him out and withdraw the AS offer. AS gets pissed at Tom Condon and thinks of firing him. He gets wind that 49ers and PM are getting pretty serious and says I better start looking for a job elsewhere. So he goes to Miami.

      • NickRow says:

        Sounds reasonable to me

      • Sean in Canada says:

Tutomate, that actually seems plausible. This whole situation seems a little sketchy.

      • waterman says:

I agree but I think Smith felt low balled too.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AS took advice from his agent. How could they go from “I’m happy with 3 years and it will be get done soon” to “the balls in AS court”!??

It smells of 4-day old fish.

      • NickRow says:

Condon should be investigated for conflict of interest. But regardless, this is a joyous occasion in Niner land.

      • Adam says:

A joyous occasion? One of the players being shafted by either his agent or the team is a joyous occasion?

I agree with Hofer, the whole thing smells. Watch the TV interview, Smith was happy with the three-year deal and was ready to sign. Who held that up? The agent? The team?

Sounds to me like Condom deserves to be dragged in the mud.

      • Adam says:

        *Condon*

      • NickRow says:

Why not a joyous occasion? This is the end of the AS experiment and that calls for celebration in my book.

How situation was handled is another story. That’s why I think Condon should be investigated for conflict of interest.

        Joyous occasion nonetheless.

      • Adam says:

So you suffered all last season?

Even the insufferable fools in here admitted to loving all the crow they were eating.

I have a hard time believing that somehow we’re automagically going to be better with an aging QB who’s numbers have been creeping down to league average since 2004.

I like Manning, I’m impressed by his early work, I think he’s a class guy but I’m going to have to see this to believe it. I still think this is a slight upgrade at the position if all the criteria are met but… there’s nothing you can do about age and declining performance so I’m gonna have to see it to believe it.

    • 23jordan says:

SMith wanted more $$$$. The same $$$$ that the Smithers said he would be willing to give up to sign more free agents. You Smithers are geniuses. You were right, Smith gave up his whole salary and his job for us to sign new free agents.

Smith got Greedy! He started smelling himself. Smith was playing checkers, the Niners were playing chess! Checkmate Alex.

      • Jack Hammer says:

But Jordan, he is a TEAM guy, and just waiting it out so they can fit everyone else they need under the cap first…..hahahaha. Guess what Smithers, AS wants to get paid just like everyone else. So much for that Opie Taylor aw schucks bologna you all loved so much.

Good guy, ok talent, but just as greedy as the rest of them.

      • Adam says:

You have no idea (how unusual) what Smith wanted or didn’t want.

All you have is a hallway interview by a TV reporter where he stated he was happy about the three-year deal.

That’s it, end of story. The rest is made up BS.

      • rocket says:

This is starting to get crazy. We know nothing about what actually happened. We can speculate on any number of scenarios, but that is all it is. When the other shoe drops, maybe we find out, but right now, nobody knows what’s really going on.

  73. Stan says:

Don’t worry-after a horrid year in Miami….Alex will be available next year. IF we want him.

    • Stan says:

Miami got it backwards. It lost on the Harbaugh sweeps..but got Smith?

    • Sean in Canada says:

The Dolphins actually have less offensive weapons than the Niners had at the end of last year. The team is in trouble.

      • hightop says:

You got that right Sean,if Alex goes to Miami just more turbulence for his already troubled career …maybe he needs to stop in Nawleans’ , see a voodoo doctor for some gris gris or some potion …things are askew for him.(hopefully he doesn’t p/u a box of pins and some 49er dolls!).

    • Neal says:

      lol good one Stan

  74. NickRow says:

It looks like AS took a red eye flight to Miami last night and is scheduled to work out at team facilities today.

Flynn also worked out for Miami this weekend.

    http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d827adbd8/freeagent-qb-smith-meeting-with-dolphins-on-sunday/

  75. waterman says:

Pete’s seachichens is getting Smith, Flynn to the fish, PM titans and 49ers are rolling with CK. See its all just rumor. Make it up anyway you like.

  76. waterman says:

Breaking news: Bruce Miller just converted to QB and is going to run the tebow offense in SF.

  77. Hoferfan67 says:

    Oh how the tide turns…

    Where’s AS:
As the scenarios play out AS is in Miami. Not a bad situation for him or JPhilbin. AS gets reunited with RBush and he is still in a WCO offense. JPhilbin gets a hard working QB that can grow with the team or start until they find their franchise guy.

    Who will PM choose:
My gut tells me PM won’t be leaving Tenn and he will announce tomorrow.
    The reasons he picks Tenn:
    1. His father’s connection with the FO
    2. Two top receivers in NWash and KBritt
    3. Top RB in CJohnson
    4. Would love to play his former team twice a year
    5. He’s a guy from the south and his wife is from Tenn
    6. Will probably be associated with team after retirement
    7. Tenn was 9-7 in 2011 and PM looks like a king making the playoffs yr one

    And the 9ers:
The 9ers will get their QB they wanted last year, MHasselbeck. They will have cap money available for a MW move if they wish to do so. CK should be the starter in 2013.

Looks to me that is where this is headed and we should all know by 2pm PT tomorrow.

    • waterman says:

Matt was good in his prime but he is broke down now and misses to many games.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Hof, you figure then that Flynn will be in Seattle?

    • MontanaMan16 says:

I will be sick to my stomach if we end up with Hasselback after this exciting week of FA. That would be like finally getting your Filet Mignon and just as the waitress is ready to place it in front of you, you’re licking your chops and suddenly she pukes on it.

      Sorry for the visual!

    • Crab15 says:

Hofe – The reasons PM will be a Niner
      1. Best chance to win a Super Bowl.
      2. Younger brother has 2 rings to PM’s 1 ring.
      3. Smorgasbord of receiving weapons now (V.D., Moss, Manningham, Crabtree, Delanie Walker).
      4. Jim Harbaugh & Co.
      5. It appears Manning seeked out Niners.
      6. PM prefers a solid power-running game (Gore, Hunter)
      7. Our defense
      8. Our special teams
      9. Our offensive line (no Chilo)
      10. Momentum is on our side.
      11. Steve Young knows more than us.
      12. NFL’s best blog (Inside the 49ers w/Grant Cohn) :-)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, you’re one of the best here, but I have to respectfully disagree. PM has everything he needs and wants in Tenn. After last year, the 9ers can only go down. With Tenn, they can go up making the playoffs yr one after a decent 9-7 last year, and he walks on water. Add to all of this his fathers connection playing key members of the FO/coaching staff, sounds too good to be true. TBD.

      • 49erGirl says:

Crab – excellent points. I agree with every last one of them. Don’t forget the weather…none of the final three have domes…SF definitely has the best climate of the bunch ;-).

      • Crab15 says:

Hofe – Thanks for the compliment.
The main reason I think Manning will choose Niners, he’s at the end of his career not the beginning. Yes, the Titans have talent but lets keep it real, they would be atleast 2 years away from surpassing AFC teams like Baltimore, Pats, Steelers and Texans IMO.
Think about this, Peyton would have a realistic chance to do something special with Niners. Back to back Super Bowl titles and he would then have bragging rights in his own family. PM comes from one of the most highly competitive families on the planet so he must want to overtake Eli. PM is losing 2-1 to Eli and he is no spring chicken.
Harbaugh has “MAJOR MOJO” right now Hofe. I think that might be the deciding factor.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer says, ” After last year, the 9ers can only go down.”

So Hof, what you’re saying is you don’t think the 49ers can make the Super Bowl this year or win it?

C’mon Hof, you usually are a good read, but this last week you have really been off.

    • 49erGirl says:

Hof – PM called the Niners….this is where he wants to play. He’s just doing his normal due dilligence before making it official.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        49ergirl,
Saw what you said about weather. You are absolutely right about that. Nice list Crab. As for Hof, don’t change you stance please. You’ve had a full year of being wrong and I’d love for you to be wrong about this one. It means we get our dream QB.

      • Crab15 says:

9erGirl – Exactly! PM is a classy guy and for him to contact Niners during negotiations with Alex Smith tells me something. PM probably feels sick for interfering with Alex but he knows this his last chance to prove he’s one of the best QB’s of all time. His sense of urgency for rings is off the charts right now. PM is too damn good to only have 1 ring.

      • hightop says:

49ergirl-like much of what is going on now(sub rosa)-PM calling the 49ers is still speculation isn’t it?

      • 49erGirl says:

Yes, its speculation…but its the general consensus of a majority of the speculators, so it must be true given the amount of “theys” and “sources” are confirming the afore mentioned speculations.

        (tongue in cheek).

    • NickRow says:

      @Hofer

After last year, the 9ers can only go down

Come on Hofe. Did you forget the short offseason and no OTAs last year? Weren’t you one of those that kept preaching that with a full off season and another year under the JH system, the team will improve? Now that Alex appears to be leaving, all of a sudden you think the team will ‘go down’?

      • philly9er says:

I took what Hof said as meaning if the niners did’nt win the SB with Manning then the season would be viewed as a failure based on the expectations.

      • hightop says:

Nick taken out of context the statement is literally untrue, the Niners can go up.. one game- to the Superbowl! In context the point, as I’m sure you know, is that by bringing Tenn. to the SB Manning could be seen as achieving a greater feat to add to his “shield”.

      • Adam says:

As I recall his contention was that Smith would look better two years in a row in the same system and under a QB guru. I think anyone who has actually looked at the situation agrees with that theory. Sure, Smith could’ve regressed but probably not likely.

The expectation with a guy like Manning (who has been in decline since about ’04/’05) is that he’s taking you to the promised land.

Sapp’s law would seem to apply: when you think you’re just one player away from the Superbowl, that’s when you need to worry.

If the expectations are this high, it could end up being a very expensive failure. If they position it as a stop-gap for CK it might be easier to swallow but it can’t be that because people are going to expect the old Peyton Manning.

What they’re literally going to get is THE OLD Peyton Manning.

But if it puts butts in the seats and sells jerseys, the Yorks are happy. I guess?

    • Adam says:

      If Hasselbeck comes here…

      Man I can’t even… I would be at a loss for words.

Sad thought. If that happens Baalke’s cred goes right to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

That would be a really bad scenario. The ignorant haters would love it and even suffer through a mediocre season and call it good, but God… how awful would that be? Seriously.

Ugh, I wish you hadn’t brought that up. Haha.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Adam, you are an intelligent guy, think about it…look at all of the possibilities, permutations, algorithms, etc, etc. Looks as though AS is gone and PM is set for life in Tennessee the homeland of his wife.

      • Adam says:

I know… there’s no one left. This is the same garbage we went through last year. All the crazies were screaming for McNabb and all the other half-assed ideas. Oh man.

Fortunately last year, the front office was smart.

God this would be terrible. Hasselbeck is just collecting a check. Just phoning it in. The guy should have retired, there’s nothing left.

That would be… tragic. That is about the best word I can come up with.

The best we can hope for is somehow Harbaugh lays the charm on Manning and Manning looks as close to possible to pre-2004. Otherwise… maybe McCown is still out there somewhere :P

Gives me a headache just thinking about it.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Adam, Big difference between this year and last is that they have their QB of the future on the team now. No need to settle for mediocre and hope for the best any longer.

You Smithers are grasping at straws because your golden child may not be back. The organization knows it can win again finally, and will do whatever it takes.

Man it feels good to be back in this position.

      • NickRow says:

If we lose out on both PM and AS, we can bring David Garrard and lose a heart beat at QB

    • 23jordan says:

      Hofer, I mean Alexfan11,

Sorry, your cridibility is lost. You have now officially been labeled as a HATER, a Peyton Manning Hater. All those personal reasons you listed, have nothing to do with Manning’s desire to win a super bowl. You just don’t get it. You should stay away for a few days. You’re gonna need some time to get your foot out of your mouth.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, good one! Take you all morning to come up with that you little silly boy!???

On to your next AS comment…

    • rocket says:

      Hofer,

It’s as likely as any of the other scenarios I’ve read. I don’t think Manning is going to make a decision that soon, but I hope he does. I think all parties just want this thing resolved so they can move on with the plan.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Rocket, I know, I know…just getting into all of the excitement and hype of the great PM’s arrival.

  78. Woodsidegil says:

We can speculate all we want because its just a big chess game with teams, players, and agents. I have to admit that it sure makes the off season exciting and keeps the juices flowing.

Here’s my take on the situation without rehashing everything that’s been said a million times already: If PM chooses us, great! (if he stays healthy and still has gas left in the tank). PM goes elsewhere, we’re disappointed but we still have options. 1) AS decides to sign with 9ers for 9ers price, not great but we know what we’re getting and it’s not a long term committment. 2) AS signs elsewhere and we have CK, Hasselbeck, possibly if PM signs with the Titans, JJ, Flynn or others.

No matter what goes down I have complete faith in Harbaalke and trust that they will make the right decision. I also feel that with our defense and the moves we’ve already made, we could likely substitute AS with another serviceable qb and still be very successful.

  79. Neal says:

    Breaking News.
Alex Smith is going to be visiting the Dolphins. He is going to take his talents to South Beach. lol that is freaking funny.

  80. waterman says:

Making all that money must be cool but if you have a family it must suck moving your kids around. I bet Miss Smith wishes he signed that contract right about now.

  81. 49erGirl says:

I’m still trying to digest all that’s happened this week. Moss and Manningham are Niners, Alex is trying out for Miami and Manning is considering the Niners a top three candidate for his services.

Looking back to where we were a year ago, this is all pretty amaz-ng…and pretty cool.

I feel bad for Alex – he’s like the guy in the movie who starts off as the boyfriend/husband who winds up getting dumped in the end in favor of true love…. Not that its definitely going to happen like that, but the script sure seems headed in that direction.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AS will land on his feet making equal dollars to what the 9ers are offering and if the Mia deal moves slowly and MF goes to Clev, AS could find more dollars in Sea. Looks like everyone wins…

      • 23jordan says:

        Alexfan11/hof,

You wanna bet he gets nowhere near that amount of money anywhere??? He won’t, you’re truly butthurt Alexfan11.

    • big biner says:

high school sweat heart don’t always last. It’s who you meet in college….lol dream week if you ask me.

    • 49erGirl says:

Funny that Seattle keeps coming up – Alex reminds me of Bill Pullman’s character in Sleepless in Seattle (wasn’t going to mention that considering chick flicks probably aren’t very popular with this crowd, lol!)

    • Neal says:

This evening at the Motel 6 conference room in East San Jose at 8pm, their will be a Alex Smith farewell party, maybe a retirement party if he can’t find another team hosted by the Smithers. The menu will consist of pigs in the blanket, Kool Aid, rubber ducky as the main course and BYOB , if you would like a adult beverage.
Also his number 11 will be retired as no future Niner player would want to wear that number, also their will be a a Hi-light film on his career as a Niner which will be about 2 minutes long. Please call ahead as space is limited.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I wouldn’t mind switching places with AS. $4-8M a year and the other dollars he already has…yeah, I’ll laugh all the way to the bank with ya!

      • Neal says:

Some people feel sorry for him, I really don’t. He is way luckier them most who have played in the NFL, with a mediocre career.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, that is why your sad approach at humor is classless. While your at it, any jokes for the two former clown HC’s that run this team into the ground before JH showed up?!!

      • Neal says:

        @Hoffer,

Do you think I give a pimple on a pig’s ass if you think my humor is classless? i could care less if you don’t like my humor, what a clown you are.

      • Adam says:

“Niner which will be about 2 minutes long. ”

About as long as Neal Fitzbob’s nightly bed exercises. In the words of another obnoxious little fella on this blog: Bwahahahaha. Hope I got enough letters in there to get the effect right.

You haters are such nasty little pieces of work. I bet you’re super fun to be around. Your bitterness IS somewhat amusing though. I suppose you’re just jealous of the guy as some have suggested. I suppose this will never end because Smith will probably always be better off than you are and this irks you people to no end.

I suppose you might find a new target and lucky us, we’ll get to read all about it this season. Yay.

      • Neal says:

        @ Adam

You Smithers are such a sensitive group, I would actually call you sore loser’s, you Smithers are just deeply hurt that Harbaugh and Baalke don’t love your man crush like you do Adam. Keep on drinking your kool Aid, little boy. Say hi to your wife Eve for me.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Hey Neal, question for you…was AS on the 9er team last year??! Why wouldn’t I root for the QB of the 2011 9ers? Neal, why don’t you spend some time posting something of substance instead of trying to get attention by being a bad rendition of FCaliendo?!!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

‘I suppose you might find a new target and lucky us, we’ll get to read all about it this season. Yay.”

How is that ignore button coming along Grant?

      • NickRow says:

        @Neal

That was classic. Hilarious dude. You forgot to mention that complimentary therapy sessions will be provided for Smithers trying to cope with their shock.

While next door at the Marriott, there will be joyous celebration sponsored by JH, TB, and the Niner fans.

      • Neal says:

thanks NickRow. I didnot know you have a outstanding sense of humor, seeya at the Marriot.

      • rocket says:

        Neal,

You’re getting a little ahead of yourself. Smith could still be the Niners QB in 2012, which would make some of the comments on here look more clueless than usual.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Let me see if you are PM do you want to throw to MC/RM or KB/NW? Hmm. lol

      • 49erGirl says:

I’d take RM/MC/VD/MM/FG/KH/DW/KW in a heartbeat. There are a lot of weapons on this team now with the addition of RM and MM – those two combined with PM’s ability to see the entire field and use those weapons are just too much to pass up!!

      • 23jordan says:

        49erGirl,

Can you believe Hofer, I mean Alexfan11? He is killing me. Can you believe the roll I am on. I’m knocking it out of the ballpark right now. Let me tell you this. Peyton Manning will be a Niner tomorrow. NFL offices are closed on tuesdays. Get your popcorn ready! I told these clowns that Alex Smith was not getting a Niner contract!!!! Guess what, no contract!

      • Neal says:

To all of the Smithers, I am very sorry for your loss, ( not really) I just spoke with Dr. Oz, he had suggested to work out, get some fresh air, hang out with friends, if you have any, take some depression meds if necessary, and a a enema is always a good thing to detox you from the Kool Aid you have been taking for the last 6 years. God luck Smithers. Here is a farewell song for you
Giving all your love to just one man
        You’ll have bad times
        And he’ll have good times
Doing things that you don’t understand
But if you love him you’ll forgive him
Even though he’s hard to understand
        And if you love him
        Oh be proud of him
‘Cause after all he’s just a man
        Stand by your man
Give him two arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely
        Stand by your man
And tell the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
        Stand by your man
        Stand by your man
And show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can
        Stand by your man

  82. waterman says:

Alex Smith Come On Down! lol The fish are trying to put a screw back on the Niners. If we don’t get PM and then they sign smith paybacks for us getting Jim H. They would have paid more money and we still got the coach of the year. Oh how we can twist this.

    • waterman says:

If one team shows interest then other teams will too. Its a copycat league. Think someone will offer smith 3 years 26m?

      • 23jordan says:

Hell NO Waterman. Would you? If you did, it would be a sympathy payment. That’s not how the NFL works. You get paid what you are worth. Any team that signs Smith will give him 1-2 years at $5 Milper if he starts, $2.5 3 Mil if he is a backup.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AS is gone however this plays out. It is business and both sides need to move on. The 9ers will either start CK this year or get MH when he asks for his release after the PM signing tomorrow. AS will have options…

  83. TIM_ says:

Yeah Hof, I agree! All that money a beautiful wife and child and now probably a home on the ocean in beautiful Miami ! I wish him well if he rrturns here or not. I still think he is our starter in 2012.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, old friend. Looks like you get your wish. PM signs with Tenn (all signs looking that way) and AS signs with Mia, Sea, or another team (Clev, Jags, ??) I wouldn’t be too sad if they sign MH and start CK in 2013. All good…

      • 23jordan says:

        HOFER,

Where is the Alex SMith/Niner extension??? Maybe he has it on the plane with him? Maybe he used it to wrap a dirty diaper? Whatever he’s done with it, it’s trash now. Just like your opinions are trash now. We can’t trust anything you say here, you’re a jilted lover and you’re hurting. Get over it! He’s GONE!

      • jgwindsor says:

how do u figure all signs point towards tenn…….from my perspective the sign post is spinning …..or maybe i am caught up in the media tornado and the sign post is stuck in the eye….

i can’t read the signs….it is like i am stuck in an alternate endings loop and it comes up different every time….well maybe only 3 or 4 scenarios but anything remains possible in my mind….including a lawsuit

  84. Adam707 says:

Assuming we sign Manning who will be his favorite target? I’m thinking Vernon, but maybe Crab will emerge as the WR everyone thought he would be. Only time will tell. Regardless who our QB is this year we have the offensive tools to win it all

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I think the 9ers let the team down with these WRs signings. Not impressed unless they use the cap money to chase MW. If CK starts next year, which is what I expect, get him MW now. Who will implode first, RM or MC because the ball isn’t coming their way??!

      • Adam707 says:

I dont think there is anyway they pursue Wallace now. That would be three big WR FA signings in the same offseason. Plus we would have two receivers who do the exact same thing in RM and MW, If we hadn’t already signed Moss then i believe MW would have been a real option. In your scenario I believe Moss would easily be the first to implode, he has a history of doing it, Crabtree doesn’t.

      • Neal says:

duh, really your football knowledge must be quite limited, we have made huge steps compared to where we were last year. It is only March, if you know anything about RFA which MW is, you don’t offer money until April, so you don’t get tied down, secondly you have the draft coming up where we can do many things. What a dope of a statement.

      • 23jordan says:

        Hofer,

Have you packed for Cleveland yet? Please kill the negativity. You are draining the board. I noticed that you’re calling the Niners the 49ers and no longer are saying we.

This is a super bowl ready team. When Manning signs, will you leave this bog? Now that we know Smith isn’t signing here, you know I’m not going anywhere. I’d like your resignation please.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Adam 707, actually MC and MMann are basically the same receivers. Decent hands and 4.55/4.6 speed. RM is the speed separation guy. If they get one of the top WRs in the draft then it’s back on track but a known commodity in MW makes more sense but the dollar payout is most likely the showstopper.

      • 23jordan says:

        Neal,

Don’t you love the way things are shaping up? I don’t drink like Hofer but I’ve got a 20 ounce 7-up waiting to celebrate the Manning /Niner signing tomorrow. It’s going to be a great day in Niner history. How will you celebrate. No more QB futility! I could’nt be more happier.

Don’t worry about Hofer. He’s an Alex Smith fan. Can’t you tell? His feelings are so hurt. He is in shambles and can’t even think straight. He is not even thinking straight now. He’s as lost as Smith now. Give him a couple of weeks. He will be gone by then. SHould be changing his screen name to Smithfan11.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, sorry you are too sensitive to take the realistic approach to this FA circus. It is business and if you read and digest the reasons I state why PM will stay in Tenn, you’ll start to comprehend this decision. Not trying to add salt to your coffee this morning, but it is what it is!

      • 23jordan says:

You never answer my questions. Will you leave this board if PEYTON MANNING signs? Answer the question please!!

      • Neal says:

        @jordan,

Exactly we knew this all along that the Smithers are Smith fans first and not real 49er fans, they are all in shock, I will celebrate with a huge glass of ice tea, Hoffer sounds like he is very constipated. He should drink Fiber one.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, you never answered my question from two days ago. Bay answered the question…will you support ANY QB that JH chooses this year? I’ve already answered – check out the archives!

    • 23jordan says:

      707,

The best part about having Manning at QB. He will spread the ball around to everyone. He has some real weapons and he is the master at reading defenses and getting everyone involved. He will keep everyone happy and the defense is going to give this offense so many opportunities. The only player I can possibility be concerned about is Gore. He will get less touches because we are about to start throwing this thing my man. Gore will get to close out games with the O line mauling people while we are up 3 touchdowns. Have you ever read about a WR being discontent under Manning? Thought so.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, why would I leave this board if PM signs? I’m a 9er fan first. You should know that! I don’t come to this board and ONLY post about AS as you do. I talk about FA, the draft, etc, etc. You have an AGENDA. It’s unfortunate that you can’t discuss or debate rationally. Looking forward to the final word from the PM camp.

      • Adam707 says:

That is what i like most about Manning, he is one of the very few QB’s in the league that can and will get everyone involved. Him, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Rivers are only QB’s with that ability. He is wicked at reading defense and making his reads. He is a rare breed when it comes to that. Plus his leadership quality is impeccable, the guy will keep everyone in check. All in all i hope this goes through, but i still believe we can win with any QB

      • 23jordan says:

        Hofer, I mean ALexfan11,

There is no debate. You are in denial, and it’s killing you! The truth hurts. I told you 2 years ago that Smith was a mistake and we had to cut ties with him. Of course I’m going to support any Qb that is capable of leading this team to a title. If Manning shows he can’t do it. I’m gonna hammer him just like I did Smith. However, I think we both know better than that. Sorry Alexfan11. it’s over.

  85. 99999ers1 says:

I can’t wait to see the 9ers put up a 300 yd passing game its been way to long.

  86. steelematic says:

Kansas there is no way us n eagles are connected. all our moves this year and last doest amount to tge dollars eagles spent on nhamdi let alone there whole offseason. our moves are calclated risks (randy moss pArrish cox manningham) to great team moves (spillman brooks rodgers takufu). This team is on the rise n if the calculated rissks dont work. well peace out. no money or skin off our back. Im sorry but for all the smith faithful not the niner faithful, this team will thrive with him, but if we had “PM” we will soar without him. All im saying is why the hell are u guys down because we could land a great qb. That right there lets me know u guys are closet smithaholics. Not niner fans. Makes me think what if it was brady brees or rodgers that could be coming in. What kind of excues u guys could come up with. Bottom line this team is constructed to win and no matter what qb is at the helm, they have no exuses. we got weapons on offense defense and special teams. “WHO WILL HAVE IT BETTRR THAN US”?……. “NOBOOOOOODDDDDYYYY”

  87. 99999ers1 says:

Manning would bring a whole new excitement and make teams toss all old game tape of our O. I think FO is doing whats best for our team even if Manning doesn’t head our way Kaep will excell with Haurbaugh..

  88. TIM_ says:

    Hof,DS,etc:
Dont despair quite yet. Although I personally would rather have PM or even Hasselbeck or Kaep starting over Alex,I still have the feeling Alex is our starter in 2012. Kaep is probably not fully ready but I wouldnt mind him learning and making his mistakes on the field too much.He should grow quickly into the job,I hope.I also think PM will choose Tenn over SB’s with the Niners but I hope I am wrong. But I will be excited with Kaep too, even if he gets a slow start.Either way we still have Jed and jh and staff and Baalke and Paarag and the future is very bright. Go Niners ! We are all fans of the TEAM !!!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, from my perspective, you are reading too much into this. I’m a 9er fan first. Yes I root for AS as I do for all 9ers on the roster. If AS plays better, the TEAM does better. My logic tells me this PM move would not be good for the TEAM. I’d rather the 9ers start CK and let’s have a QB in place for 10+ years of stability a la TBrady, DBrees, ARodgers, etc. I don’t want musical chairs at the QB position. JH is a QB guru lets get going on tutoring the franchise guy NOW. Plus CK is a local guy Bay Area guy.

BTW, when SYoung was taking over the reins from JM, I supported him. Everyone wanted him strung up because he *couldn’t* win the big game to get the 9ers to the SB. With all of those MVPs and good 9er teams, SY only won ONE SB.

It’s time to get THE guy and stick with him. That is the best plan.

      • 99999ers1 says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what their plan is. I think if Peyton doesn’t come to SF the CK era will start 2012.

    • 23jordan says:

      Tim,

You’re wrong son and that is not what you want. They are right, you should be a politician. Smith is gone, would you like to make a wajer? How about lunch?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yes AS is gone and PM is most likely not here either. Hmm.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, your AGENDA has taken you to new levels. You are even trying to put words in Tim’s mouth regarding AS. Jordo, have you ever read what Tim thinks of AS as a QB? With every comment that has been written this morning and you LASER FOCUS on what Tim thinks may happen because it INCLUDES AS??!

That just VALIDATES your *personal* AGENDA!! Sad.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Tim

The “despair” you are referring too is about the Niners not addressing their WR need as much as I would have liked.

Moss is old. Even if he is good, he does not have another decade left in him. Manningham is better than MC, but not anywhere near as good as the guy I would hedge my bets on as being the best WR who we can realistically pick up, MW.

Put aside the whole QB thing for an instant (hard to do here, I know), but whomever are QB is in 2012, 2014, 2018, we need a real #1 WR. One who everybody sees on our roster and says, “We need to double this guy, or we are stupid.” EVERY QB needs WR’s who are like Wallace, or Rice, or LF. Guys who command the respect of the defense, and still manage to make big plays while opening up the rest of the offensive options on any given play for the mere reason of their presence.

The Niners don’t have that guy right now. Wallace would make any QB better. And make our offense better than any of the WR’s we have signed, and the team a better team in the long haul than if we did manage to sign PM, or another aging QB.

Now to get back into the QB thing for a bit:

The safe bet in 4 years is that Wallace is going to be a lot more productive than PM and whomever our QB is (AS, CK, other) will help our QB be successful. He can be our #1 for a decade. And one can say that with more confidence than anybody can say that PM or AS or CK or Tolzein will be the #1 in a decades time.

      • 49erGirl says:

If PM signs with the Niners, we’ll have the opportunity to see where the real issues were. The WR’s currently on the team will be just fine.

      • jgwindsor says:

except the current roster of WR were not all on the team before…..have to acknowledge there were WR issues this year as far as continuity goes….

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Maybe by pursuing Manning the front office believes they are addressing their current biggest need. Have you considered that?

  89. Adam707 says:

One curious question. Assuming we sign PM how fast would our offense be able to adapt to a PM ran offense? We have some young (not ultra intelligent, Davis and Iupati) lineman, could be a lot harder to run a PM type offense.

    • 49erGirl says:

My guess is that PM, JH and GR will combine their systems to come up with a hybrid version that fits the existing Niner system, but brings in a ton of PM flair. Opposing teams won’t know what to expect or what just hit them.

      • Adam707 says:

I assume we will run about 80% of our plays out of shotgun. But i still think Harbaugh will rely on the run a lot, and i’m sure PM is fine with that.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Adam707

Ask PM. He will be coaching the offense at that time.

      • 49erGirl says:

You sound so bitter. Could it have something to do with you being completely wrong about everything from “AS is definitely the starting QB next season” to “stop talking about this PM nonsense because the Niners aren’t interested” to “there’s no way JH would do that to Alex” to all your ramblings about trading MC?

PM to MC/RM is a real possibility for 2012 and you are on record hating all of them. Guess you’re gonna be the “hater” next season….buaahahahahaha!!!!

This must be a complete nightmare for you – the team is doing all the things you said they wouldn’t and there isn’t a d–m thing you can do about it!!!

      • BigP says:

        49erGirl,
Be careful, she might call you a stalker for holding her accountable for her own words like that. Lol. This is a very stressful time for her. She is now facing the reality that coach Harbaugh does indeed know more about football then she does.

      • 23jordan says:

        Ninergirl,

All the Smithers are hurt. Havn’t you noticed how quiet they are. Every moment of every day that passes, this is killing them. Poor BS, it is over ther in shambles. More surprising, Hoferfan67, I mean Alexfan11 has completely lost his mind. Think about it. No Ribico, No Claude, No Prime Crabtree, Very little OneDolphin. I’m gonna have nicknames for the Smithers tomorrow after Peyton signs. We should have a going away party for them. Bus leaves to Miami on Tuesday morning at 6:00 A.M.

Domn’t fret for them. They were Smith fans, not Niner fans. That’s real. Now you can tell.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Jordo, If they stick around for next year they will be the haters, hoping Manning fails so they can say, “I told you so.”

      • 49erGirl says:

        Jordan,

Although I disagree with a lot of the people you mentioned, I only have a problem with two of them…and please don’t insult dolphins like that ;-)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

9ergirl, we may disagree, but you’ve always been a class act. I’m against the “quick fix” PM signing, but for you, I’m all in! TBD.

      • 49erGirl says:

Same here, Hof – nothin’ but love for ya ;-)

    • jgwindsor says:

play action comes a lot more often i suspect

  90. TIM_ says:

MM said an nfl exec that is involved intimatly in the PM negotiations told him that PM says he doesnt need to bring his old offense to his new team but would be excited at the prospect at change .

  91. TIM_ says:

As I said Hof, you are a fan of the TEAM !

  92. Ruby Tims says:

I’m a. Cowboys fan America’s team we have talent but we need Petting Manning then we would be SuperBowl bound.Petting has great leadership. Qualities.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Petting? Wow, you are a Cowboy fan, now go sit in the corner a play with your letter blocks!

  93. TIM_ says:

Well Hof and DS, we are all Niner diehards and we all want the best for the team imho, no matter what some othrrs might say about you fans who seem stuck on Alex. I wont gloat if it turns out my preferred way because if we win we will all be happy , except maybe onenineronly. …maybe even him who knows :)
Time for Church so catch you all later !
    Go Niners !!!

  94. ninermd says:

Hmmmm I did say manning to manningham??? The other day. It was sort of a joke, but hey looks like it could be a reality. Lol

I still think Denver is where he’s going. That gut feeling from last week can’t be shaken. So by MM signing it either means he really believes PM is signing here. Or the 49 ers know he’s not and getting more weapons now.

Grant do you think this signing indicate PM is coming or we are getting more weapons for Smith? CK or another QB? We were behind tenn and den already in cap space. Idk my feeling is PM isn’t coming here.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I don’t think Mannigham or Moss would have signed with the Niners if they didn’t expect to catch passes from Peyton Manning. Just a guess.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Grant

Then if they don’t land PM, will those players just now show up?

Then we will be without a WR. And never having made a run to get Wallace.

        I hope you are wrong.

      • 23jordan says:

        BS,

You kill me. How do you spend so much time her, yet know so little about the game of football. The players we signed are under contract. What the HELL makes you think they are not going to report when the time comes. The only HOLDOUT we had was Alex SMith. Well he’s no longer our problem, he’s yours.

Our wide receivers will show up and so will PEYTON MANNING. I know you hate seeing his name.

      • 23jordan says:

        Grant,

Do you think I’m enjoying this? Yes Sir! I tried to tell them for 2 years. Now they have to face it.

  95. Razoreater says:

Peyton Manning plays the game for one reason and one reason only. Super Bowls. No amount of home town heroism or $$$ is gonna sway him. He knows the odds say San Francisco is his best bet. I also believe we have one of the top front offices’ and head coaches. Manning will be a 49er.

    • 23jordan says:

      RAZOR,

Why is it so confusing to them. To real Niner fans, I think it’s too good to be true. They just can’t believe it. I never thought Smith would ever leave. I did know we couldn’t win a super bowl with him. Manning is already a Niner. Press conference tomorrow. Gonna be a great day.

  96. Ruby Tims says:

I meant. We need peyton. He a great. Quarterback. I don’t. know why Jerry Jones doesn’t. Want him.

  97. ninermd says:

Smith visiting the dolphins. If I were him and wanted to still thrive in this league I’d pick up the phone down to SD and back up rivers. Who eventually is going to get injured. I still can’t buy that smith is leaving the 49 ers. He’s been through rougher times here and if manning doesn’t sign smith would be a fool or is really upset … Not to resign a second time.

    • Grant Cohn says:

The Dolphins will probably pay him the most money and that seems to be what Smith cares about, like most professional athletes.

      • ninermd says:

Hmmm. Never thought I’d think that way of smith. But like you said he is an athlete. So do you think there is NOOOOO way possible he returns? Even after all of the stuff he’s went through and survived here? Until I see it I won’t believe it.

      • Grant Cohn says:

No, if Manning chooses Denver by surprise, I’m sure the Niners would reach out to Smith and he would return. It’s a business.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Alex Smith said this to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: “This is the NFL. I guess nothing surprises me anymore. I never thought a year ago (Peyton) Manning would be a free agent either. I’m never surprised by anything.”

      • Neal says:

        Grant,

Don’t you think that Flyn has the inside track for the Dolphin job, along with being a better QB then Smith, he has the connection with the head coach.? I can see Seahawks going after Smith because they are desperate although I know Flyn might go there too.

      • 23jordan says:

The Smithers will never believe it was about money. It obviously was because Smith said himself that the 3 years weren’t a problem.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Good morning MD, AS will get a decent contract somewhere although not with a team that has the talent the 9ers have. He’ll either end up with Mia, Sea, or Clev. All good situations especially the Sea possibility. After all, it is a business and loyalty is thin on both sides.

      • ninermd says:

I would be shocked if he didn’t return.. Oh and good morning to you also. I wonder if his agent had something to do with him not signing. It would be one of the biggest bonehead moves in NFL history. I’m confused. I want to hear the story behind this one.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, I see it as a good break for both the 9ers and AS. If they get MH (which is what I believe will happen) it’s not a bad thing. I’d like them to get CK going but with the schedule this year, it may be thrown to the wolves and culture shock.

      • ninermd says:

        Hof… Who is MH?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Matt Hasslebeck

      • ninermd says:

Thx Jack… Hof Matt H? Really? I would think Josh Johnson if not manning or smith.

  98. oldtimefan says:

Is Manning’s desire to make the most money possible or to win a Super Bowl? If it’s the latter, the 49ers should be a lock.

Baalke/Harbaugh haven’t made many mistakes so far. Recognition for the Yorks for allowing the football people make football decisions.

  99. kansas49er says:

    @Steele

Oh I’m for PM believe me. Its just something my 15 yr. Old daughter said that had thinking. I’ll go with your reasoning since she is a saints fan. Ill be happy who ever is our QB.

  100. 56niner says:

Coach H took some heat last year when he started the season with one QB AS, and 2 rookies. So, yes, there are some QB possibilities, including one of the Qb’s allready on our team, starting the season. Possibly PM.

I like it. It’s win win…… Go niners.

  101. Dad Gum says:

I see an agent here squeezing the last drop for his clients. Funny they are all visiting the same places; com’n man, up the anty!

  102. Tutomate says:

One question. What makes some of you believe that Flynn is a better quarter back than AS? Seriously what concrete foundation is there for that belief. One game? Please enlighten me.

  103. OpenMinded says:

Well, I’m throwing down my red challenge flag. The most compelling argument I am reading from the “Sign Peyton” camp is that he can take us where, they say, Alex can’t – the Super Bowl. The expectations with Peyton will be just that, Super Bowl or Bust. With Alex, there is no way the Niners get to the SB, they say. No Peyton excuses. Either he does it or he was no better than Alex. Anything less than a knee cap OT loss in the NFC Championship will be a failure that cost too much. As a fan, I hope the “Sign Peyton” folks are right. Five Super Bowls in a row?! Wow! I’m all in.

Upon further review… the call in the front office …. stands (or is reversed).

  104. Crab15 says:

If Harbaugh does not land Manning his plan B will not be Matt Hasselbeck or Alex Smith.
Remember the 1983 NFL Draft? The Colts selected John Elway with the #1 pick. Elway refused to play for the pitiful Colts so the Colts caved in and traded Elway to Denver.
The pitiful Colts have the #1 pick again. If Manning picks Denver or Tennessee over Niners, Harbaugh has a plan B of Andrew luck pulling an Elway.
Luck has a secret deal with Harbaugh to force the pitiful Colts to trade him to the Niners if they don’t get Peyton Manning!
Thought that might give you guys/9erGirl a good laugh. :-)

  105. MontanaMan16 says:

John Elway has already demonstrated, through his pursuit of Peyton Manning, that he wasn’t being completely candid when he declared that Tim Tebow had earned the right to enter training camp as the Broncos’ starter. But even if the Broncos fail to secure Manning’s services, that doesn’t mean Tebow’s position as the Broncos’ starter is safe.

In fact, as Mike Klis of the Denver Post points out, if Manning picks the Titans or 49ers, and Matt Hasselbeck or Alex Smith becomes the odd man out, it’s entirely possible that Hasselbeck or Smith would then become the Broncos’ next targets.
