Alex Smith currently in negotiations with Dolphins, could be a goner

Alex Smith is not waiting for the 49ers any longer. He’s negotiating with Dolphins right now for a contract worth roughly $8 million per year according to the Denver Post’s Mike Klis, who cites an NFL source.

Stay tuned – he could sign any minute.

The Niners must feel confident they’re going to sign Peyton Manning or that they can win a Super Bowl with Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson or Matt Hasselbeck, or any bargain quarterback.

Either way, it seems like Alex Smith is a goner.

  1. 49erGirl says:

Uh oh…heads are going to explode!!!! No more Alex Smith?!!!

What the heck are we going to argue about next year? How many TD’s we’ll score in the SB??

    • Neal says:

lol at Niner girl that was pretty funny.

    • AES says:

      (lol) 49erGirl.
I would love to peak in to a Dolphin blog at mid-season just to see the comments. They will no doubt have a very familiar ring to them!
Prime and oneniner will likely take their talents (hate) to South Beach to defend Alex.

      • M2 says:

When you look in on those blogs to laugh at others, perhaps they’ll be laughing at you, the guy who could not spell “peek”.

    • big biner says:

this blog will shut down with no alex talk and Grant’d going to have to work now, lol

    • JasonWebster says:

That was a good one, and very true!

    • Crab15 says:

      9erGirl – That’s why you are a Rockstar!

    • Donjulio says:

The Dolphins have offered Smith a multiyear deal worth $8 million a season, according to the Denver Post, which is citing an NFL source. Earlier in the day, ESPN reported that Smith met with Dolphins officials for 5 1/2 hours at the team’s Miami-area facility.
“So basically he’s going to sign the same type of contract the 9ers offered him, that he turnt down”. Talk about screwing yourself, the Dolphins are still expected to look towards the draft for a quarterback (see Ryan Tannehill). Alex Smith may still be looked upon as a short term solution.

  2. Sammythedice says:

Thats fine. We dont need him.

  3. Sukhi711 says:

If Peyton knows where he is going then i am surprise he is waiting until Tuesday to announce, that way team that he will sign with can go on and concentrate on signing other FAs to make his future team stronger.

    • DS94everXev says:

If PM really only wanted the best team around him, he would have never gone anywhere besides here. The Niners have the best team by far. No need to wait till Tuesday to figure that out.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Why DS? Manningham, and Moss both looked elsewhere before signing here. It is called doing your due diligence.

      • DS94everXev says:

        No Jack

Once both players came here, they signed here. Didn’t look anyplace else. In fact, Manningham was about to sign with the Rams. A team that sucks by and large. When he found out the Niners want him (even if only for 2 years) he took it immediately.

Once PM got word that the Niners are interested in him, he should have signed with them. After all, he has more money than either Moss or Manningham. If winning is all he wants, we have the better team.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, I know this week has been especially difficult on you, losing your first love and all. So tough in fact that you forgot that Manningham had been in Santa Clara for a visit on Thursday, before heading out to St Louis to visit the Rams.

It’s ok little buddy, you will find love again. After all you are the Great Master Debater.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Hey Jack

        NEWSFLASH!

The Rams were about to sign Manningham. Every source said it. Then he switched teams to the Niners at the last second. Probably because he wanted to win.

Maybe your heart was broken this week. Mine is fine. Maybe your memory is in trouble. Better go see a neurologist about that.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, I am only letting you know that you are wrong stating that they both signed here on their first trips in without talking to anyone else after.

Manningham was here Thursday, then went to St Louis on Friday, got close to signing then the Manning thing blew up and he realized that SF was his best option.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I thought that was clear.

        Sorry.

If Manningham had not come here, he would have signed with the Rams.

I didn’t intend to imply that all TB did was call him up and say “Come here” while in the meeting with the Rams, and did so.

Sorry again if there was any confusion.

  4. Andrew says:

Hallelujah! I’m not as confident as you are, but would love to see someone else come in. I’m okay with either Manning or Hasselbeck holding the reins until CK is ready. If not, hell I’ll take Johnson as a plan B.

  5. Fourth & Alex says:

Wow I never thought we would finally part ways with Alex. Great guy, average QB at best.

I will still have my doubts until someone reports that he has signed with another team. Until then I can only cross my fingers for a new era of 49ers football.

    • rjberryx says:

Yep, great guy, one of the last ethical NFL contract holders and someone who came ONE PLAY away from bringing our team to the SB.

  6. Neal says:

Sign that contract Alex, please sign it. My brother is a Dolphin fan, and all last year he was bashing Alex Smith, yea so was I , please sign it and I want him to suffer like we all did the last 7 years. The Dolphins will give him a bigger contract then the Niners will. The new head coach will be fired in the next two years with Alex at the helm.

  7. ChessGM says:

Who is doing the negotiating for him? His agent, Mr. Condon, is busy with his other client. Matt Moore is a better QB than Smith.

  8. Lott says:

    No to Matt Hasselback!!!!!!

  9. TIM says:

One thing I have to say is that even if we don’t get Manning ,he has done both Alex and the Niners and especially the Niners fans a real service by allowing both the team and Alex to move on ! Alex should have left years ago to start whatever career he can muster up for himself in the NFL,I am glad for him if he has found a team that wants him.
Now if PM comes it’s dancing in the streets and if not then it’s dancing in the streets anyway because the REAL Harbaugh era can begin ! I would not have minded and in fact would have been rather glad if Alex stayed as a backup to Kaep but it is better this way for Alex and probably for the team, since Tolzien seems to be at least a great prospect as a backup and maybe more (trade bait in a few years or who knows how it develops between him and Kaep …and PM ,if he comes.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

I think a lot of the fan base feels exactly the same way.

    • Ceedub says:

The ideal scenario in my opinion, would have been for Alex to play 1 more year and then turn the QB spot over to CK7. It doesn’t appear to look like that will happen now, as I think Alex will sign with Miami or Denver if the Broncos don’t land PM. If CK7 isn’t ready, look for the Niners to bring in a vet like Hasselbeck or Johnson to compete until CK7 is ready. Same goes for Tolzein if he steps up and shows the coaches he may be ready. This isn’t what Harbaugh wanted. I think he wanted Alex for at least one more year. The front office decided to go after PM.

  10. Hoferfan67 says:

Not a shocker by any means. I commented this morning that AS is gone, PM will sign with the Titans, and the 9ers will pick up an asked to be released MH to take over the reins until CK is ready in 2013.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

Will you cry in your beer if Alex signs elsewhere? Seems like you were an adamant supporter throughout the season, and then news broke he is “exploring his options.” Now it feels like you’re distancing yourself from your original desires to re-sign him..

      • Hoferfan67 says:

No I thought AS should have left last year. JH resurrected his career and he might get a dollar more from Mia than the hawks paid for MF. Bad move by the hawks. lol

    • DS94everXev says:

      @hof

Who cares about MH? He isn’t going to get us anywhere. He had a good OL in the Titans and didn’t do much with them.

Start CK or Tolzein. Now we MUST draft a QB at some point if AS leaves and PM does not sign.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Same could be said about Alex.

      • 49erGirl says:

        We drafted one last year…duh…

      • DS94everXev says:

        49erGirl

        Stalker

      • Jack Hammer says:

Please excuse DS. The Great Master Debater is trying to deal with the loss of his first true love, and the lashing out is just the beginning of the grieving process.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jack

No. Just trying to get 49erGirl to take her own advice and leave people alone who you don’t like.

She suggested it to me (long before you came along). Can’t seem to take her own advice. She takes it, this stalker thing stops. She does not, it goes on.

Her choice. Her actions are causing it. Take your own advice, or drag the blog down. Her choice along with BigP’s.

      • 49erGirl says:

        DS

Poor baby….can only resort to name calling because you have no leg to stand on when it comes to football talk.

It’s OK – you can admit it…Harbaugh/Baalke know more about football than you do…..which is why they’re letting Alex go. You should too.

      • DS94everXev says:

        See Jack
        Stalker about.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I been saying it all day! The niners seem to like Kirk Cousins. There’s a video of it on 49ers.com

      • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

        @ MontanaMan
The video on the web site is just one of a great many of videos that comprise a series they’re doing on draft eligible collegiate players. They have also featured WR Nick Toon & others. Wouldn’t put much stock in the Niners’ very public web site given the team’s recent penchant for secrecy and pulling off the unexpected.

    • TIM says:

Sounds like a likely senario Hof ! If PM goes to Tenn as we think.

  11. Razoreater says:

    This house is clean.

    • TIM says:

      LOL, Poltergeist,right ?

    • Houston 9er says:

Now that was funny. I don’t care who you are.

      • 49erGirl says:

Hey Houston!! Nice to see you back :-)

      • Houston 9er says:

Thanks. I took a hiatus from this site because of all the Alex debate. When I left some guy was posting stats in an effort to say Alex is more accurate than Tom Brady. Now I come back and some guy is saying Alex is better than Peyton Manning. Some things never change.

      • 49erGirl says:

Well, looks like the debate may finally be over.

Looks like Alex got the 7 year itch :-)

  12. Stan says:

No loyalty from Alex to the team that kept him in the NFL for seven years and made him incredibly wealthy? INGRATE!

    • 49erGirl says:

I’m so glad the evil Facebook brought you to us, Stan! Lmao!

      • Stan says:

And soon-KNBR reveals Alex doesnt wash his hands after using the men’s room…its ALL coming out now 49er girl!

    • Ceedub says:

Stan what is your dislike for KNBR? You sure seem to listen to them a lot for a guy who disrespects what they say, especially about Alex, according to you.

  13. TIM says:

    Hof:
I wanted Hasselbeck last year and so did JH and TB,but the lockout messed that up. I don’t think Hasselbeck is anything great but he should be able to at least do as well as Alex . I think Kaep can learn from him much better than from Alex,MUCH better ! The only thing a young QB could learn from Alex is how to be a great team mate and hard worker and a class indivigual and I think Kaep already has those things and only needs to pick up the finer points of playing NFL football on the field, and Alex needed to learn those things too,so he couldn’t help Kaep like Hasselbeck can.
And if PM does come here Kaep will learn just by watching a master, even if PM doesn’t take him under his wing.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

If the 9ers don’t get to the SB this year it will be a very unsuccessful year.

      • TIM says:

Really Hof,is that the best you could come up with. We have a tough schedule this year and every team is waiting for us because we are now on everyones radar. Whatever,if Alex is gone we can easily replace him,but that is no guarantee we win 14 games again. After all Alex had very little to do with our winning record last season, although he did contribute some, unlike other years when he was totally a hindrance

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

The Niners of old had that same rule.

Super Bowl or failure. You want the dynasty back, that rule comes with it. Need to take the good (Super bowl) with the bad (failure if not) for the dynasty to truly return.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

The bar has been set Timmy. Anything less than the SB this year and the columnist are going to have a field day. Oh I can see RR. TK, MP. even LC licking their chops!! Are you along for an interesting ride!!

      • Neal says:

12-15 teams a year say that. big deal

      • TIM says:

I agree we all set the bar high but the way you are TRYING to frame the discussion is that you are attempting to say that if we don’t win the SB (as 31 teams wont do),that it is because we didn’t keep Alex…and that is simply laughable in every way .

      • DS94everXev says:

        No Tim

I did not say that. I don’t think hof did either.

If you get an old vet QB to get you to the super Bowl and you fail, what assurances do you have that the same old vet QB will be able to get us there next year?

If AS is still here and he fails, you still have a lot of years left in AS if the organization deems so, or go in another direction.

If AS is not here, then you are screwed. Just like the Vikings got screwed when they did the same thing a mere several years ago.

  14. Raiq says:

I still hope he stays, because I believe he’ll have a better season with us than Peyton would (and for those laughing, compare what Smith has done since Raye was fired with what Peyton has done since mid-2009 despite having vastly superior talent on offense), but for Alex and his family, I fear he needs to get away from this environment, even if it means taking less money and having less job security. He’s been trashed by this fanbase in a disgraceful, despicable manner for 7 years, and the organization has insulted him with a lowball manner. At some point you have to have some self-respect and stand up for yourself.

    • TIM says:

      Raiq:
Anybody to believe what you just said would have to be delusional or a member of Alex’s Family or simply a member of the Alex only fan club, who is not a fan of the TEAM. It would be humorous if it wasn’t so sad !
Be happy for Alex,he may have found the one team in the NFL who wanted him.

      • Leo says:

Here you go again with the childish “not a fan of the team” argument.

      • Raiq says:

I’ll be happy for Alex if he finally takes a stand against his mistreatment here. Sickening the way he is treated after what he did for us last season and especially against New Orleans.

      • Latino Heat says:

Tim I think there are a lot of fans who think the same thing as Riaq. There not delusional or family members. They actually might be well educated, informed and loyal. Ever consider a different perspective outside of your own or has old age made you one diminsional in your thinking, or is it the geratol?

      • TIM says:

        Leo:
If anyone says Alex would be a better QB than Peyton then he is just a Smith fan,it not an arguement I am making,it’s just an observation and quite obvious to all, except those who are JUST Alex fans .

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

And what happens if PM is not here then?

      • TIM says:

Really, there are really fans who believe Alex would be a better QB than Peyton this season ? I guess there are people who believe all sorts of things but I am shocked there are 2 or 3 who are willing to put it in writing and be laughed at. Oh well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But you do understand that not one person in the NFL or who covers a team in the NFL would agre with you ,right ?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, say that when PM is in the 9er building at the press conf. Who cares how good PM is playing for the titans or denv!!

      • TIM says:

        DS:
I already stated that Alex is easily replaced by any dime a dozen QB..The only advantage Alex has here is he has a year in the system ,but so does Kaep and Tolzien and either one of them can replace Alex and after a little experience and learning from their mistakes do as well as Alex, imho. And in JH’s humble opinin too I guess.

      • Leo says:

He didn’t say he would be a better QB, he said he would have a better season. There is a difference. Besides, as I told you before, I am a fan of both players yet I guess I’m not a fan because I’d rather see Alex play. Grow up man.

      • TIM says:

Hof: Say what when PM is here ??? You make no sense.
I am not saying PM is coming here,I think he will go to Tenn.
I am just saying that PM did us all a favor by showing Alex that the Niners didn’t want him for the long term. It woke Alex up and it freed us all from more wasted years with Alex. And it freed Alex to get on with his career !

      • TIM says:

OK,I take it back,I guess there are real fans who think Alex will have a better season than PM. You have the right to be wrong and I have no right to jump on you for being so wrong. My apologies !

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

“I already stated that Alex is easily replaced by any dime a dozen QB.”

Please name me a dozen QB’s who we can get in here next year then and do an equal if not better job than AS? One little catch. They have to be available (FA)or possibly there to be drafted when the Niners pick. And, they have to be as good as AS was last year. No time to get used to the personnel, coach, etc.

      • Raiq says:

I don’t care what the experts say. All the experts were dead wrong about Alex last year and I was right.

As I said, people will laugh at the comparison and to those people I say compare their performance over their last 1.5 seasons of play. QB ratings are virtually identical. In Peyton’s last playoff game, he lost to Mark Sanchez at home, only scored 16 points, threw 1 fewer TD than Alex did against the Giants, who had a better defense and he was playing in a rainstorm with possibly the worst WR corps seen in the playoffs in decades. Peyton got to play in a dome with Wayne and Garcon.

Plus the fact that Peyton has missed a year and has serious health issues. We don’t even know that he can get back to his 2010 form.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Raiq

        No argument from me.

      • Leo says:

By all means Tim, jump on us for our opinions. I understand it and expect it. But to call those people who disagree with your opinion non fans is not cool.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Leo

        Tim apologized.

Let it go. There are some here who have not apologized for misquoting me, and it has been a long time. Tim apologized pretty much immediately.

If you are going to hold a grudge, hold it against those who have never apologized to you for saying things a lot worse than what Tim said. And believe me. What Tim said was nothing next to some “fans” here. I have had better communication with other teams fans than I have with some here. That is what is really sad. That a fan from another team does not hate a player as much as our own “fans”. When I grew up, that simply didn’t exist.

      • Latino Heat says:

Tim a 2007 healthy version is better than any QB in the league right now. But a 36 yearold QB removed after a full year from football and 4 neck surgeries in the last 19 months is a different story. So I ask you, a healthy and potentila rising star in Alex or a unknown hall of famer with health problems?

      • Leo says:

Unless I misread his comment, his apology was sarcastic. Either way I’m not offended or expecting an apology. Simply just telling a fellow fan that his argument of people no being fans because of their opinion is flawed.

      • TIM says:

I didn;t say there were a dozen better QB’s than Alex,I said that any DIME A DOZEN QB could replace the things that Alex contributed last year to the team. In fact I believe there are quite a few MORE than a dozen better QB’s in the NFL right now, some were backups.

      • DS94everXev says:

Dime (money) a dozen (meaning you get 12 individual things). In this case those 12 individual things would be 12 different QB’s.

And, which 12 are available for the Niners to just get?

    • Lenniwinks says:

Raiq, I got yo back. Ill be disappointed if Alex doesn’t come back, too. Count me as one of the optimistic ones ready to see Alex take his game to the next level next year. Too bad. In any case, manning will always only be a Colt to me.

      • Raiq says:

Thanks, Lenniwinks. I’m still selfishly hoping Alex comes back but maybe he’s just not meant to be here.

Another thing people should look at is the decline of Peyton’s deep ball after 2007. No one in the media will talk about this, probably because they’re clueless, but the evidence can be seen at his espn.com profile. People would also be shocked to know that in the last 3 seasons, Alex has a much higher completion pct. throwing 20+ yards.

    • JasonWebster says:

Hey Raiq alex sucked last year stupid 17 tds barely 3k yards those are pedestrian numbers at best. He sucked in the saints game, 2-15 on third downs. He’s the reason we had to come back. Our d and special teams got us 5 turn overs we should have won by 3-4 tds. Alex is garbage go back to football school you retard.

  15. Stan says:

    If no Manning..Vince Young…

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Stan, we know you are a Raider fan…

    • Stan says:

Jim went from no drama Harbaugh…to the Royal drama King…Moss,Cox,Manning ,shoveing Alex out the door… Just think of the next talented malcontent and Jim wants him.
      He learned at Al’s knees…

    • Montana Joe says:

I’ve been in favor of this move for some time. Some ESPN analyst thought Young was a better QB then Vic was last year and that the Eagles would have made the playoffs with Vince under center.

  16. AHHHH says:

good idea to get media coverge grant. hey im thinking about jumping off a bridge so that means i already did it right?? retarded, just cuz the media says someones talking doesnt mean hes signed a contract. were all going off what the news says how wud we know whats really happening. its all about publicity for these media companies

  17. J.R. Krikorian says:

Honestly, I could care less who the QB is next year. Be it MH, JJ, CK, ST or a draft choice. I trust in JH and TB and belive they know exactly what they are doing. They obviousley feel we will never get over the hump w/o a change, whether it looks good on paper or not. When this is all ironed out, the 49ers will still be the team to beat in the NFC. If you think otherwise you are either delusional or plain haten. Smith had a chance to sign. HE CHOSE not to. Let the games begin. Helllllll, I might start throwin myself just in case!

  18. David says:

Wow , I’m assuming JH and TB know what they are doing , they couldnt keep manning a secret for ever they knew that , Tony dungy former Colts coach mentioned San Fran would be best fit for PM in the beginning of all this , then NFL so called experts said a new team will make a play for PM last minute and get him , and it might be san fran , I think everyone knew before us including Alex that is why he didn’t sign , I like him , but think we need to finally cut the 7 year leash we have had.

    • Ceadderman says:

Either Manning is not going to be a 9er or won’t be one for long when they call for the body bag.

      • TIM says:

Sour grape Ceaddar ! Any player can get knocked out for the season on any play. Are you hoping PM gets hurt, just to validate your minority opinion ?

      • Ceadderman says:

Oh come on now. When have I ever cheered for a player to get injured.

I’m just saying that letting Smith get away and going after Manning is a huge mistake because our Line cannot protect him. An I hope for Manning’s sake that he doesn’t sign with the 9ers.

      • JasonWebster says:

Ceadderman, you couldn’t even graduate from high school, don’t try to play doctor moron, Peytons health will be fine, he’s a smart guy he wouldnt be risking it if he wasnt stupid.

  19. Ceadderman says:

At least one thing could happen with this signing. The Smith bashing will cease. 9er fans will turn their sights on the next guy.

Funny how stupid some fans are regarding a game they no absolutely nothing about. Just as bad as the fans on their cell phones and tablets and notebooks during Giants games imho.

    • TIM says:

Hopefully the unfair hating and bashing of anyone who told the truth about how poor a QB Alex was will stop ! But the haters will find something else to lash out about.

  20. Hoferfan67 says:

Interesting that JP knew what he had in MF and DIDN’T sign him. The hawks are not getting any brighter. lol

    • msclemons67 says:

Over 8 million per year for a guy who’s started two games. Just nuts.

      • TIM says:

But Seattle thought Flynn was better than alex in every way,and so do I,even without the experience, that he will get soon enough. I am mad that Alex didn’t go to Seattle and we have to play against Flynn, who has a CHANCE to be MUCH better than alex.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

        No.

If Flynn leaves and tries out for another team and signs there, and AS does not sign with Seattle, then they are screwed.

        See. A different rational perspective.

  21. J.R. Krikorian says:

Ceaddderman…..you offend me, I played both H.S. and JUCO football and have coached for years. Some of us actually do know what we are talking about. I’ll try not to take it personal though.

    • DS94everXev says:

Did you bash him, or criticize him? Or those who did not agree with you by bashing them? Ceadderman I am sure was talking about those people.

  22. 49er42 says:

What happens if PM goes to Denver and Alex goes to Miami? Then I think we have a bigger problem at QB. It does not appear that JH thinks Kapernick is ready to start, so who do we get?
I hope we are not taking a step backwards.
Now if we get Manning that would be great, but he is very connected to Tenn. and Denver can throw a boat load of money at him; they are $40M below the cap and have an excellent defense.
The next few days are going to have a huge impact on the 2012 season, hopefully it well be a positive one.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @49er42

“What happens if PM goes to Denver and Alex goes to Miami? Then I think we have a bigger problem at QB”

The people known as haters or ones who didn’t believe in AS’s abilities are not even considering that very real possibility.

They just think any QB can not throw Int’s game after game while having the game on the line many times and coming out with a win somehow.

This could easily result in more than 1 step backwards. Especially if CK does not live up to the standards some here have of him.

      • TIM says:

Without PM and without Alex the Niners are still better off. They can get rolling on the new JH era sooner rather than later ! Sure Kaep would throw more picks etc while he is learning, but he would learn from his mistakes and get better, instead of go in a shell like Alex and just try not to ever make a mistake. I don’t think Kaep is quite ready but believe we would be better off in the long run with him starting than alex. Alex was a place holder and we all knew it. Alex just found out yesterday .Some few fans are still not understanding that FACT.

      • Sukhi711 says:

Then 9ers will go after Johnson and let Kaep n Johnson compete.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

With CK at the helm now, the Niners are no sure bet to make the playoffs in our division. Our divisional foes are really strong defensively. A few TO’s near the goal line (that never happened once all last year by the way) and we will be in a lot tougher situations defensively than we were last year, and give up more points. CK would have to score more just to keep even with AS.

    • 49erGirl says:

Where do you get the impression that JH doesn’t feel Kaep is ready to start?

The actions of the FO suggest otherwise. This isn’t exactly a team know for taking huge risks.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Sad thing is it will put major pressure on him to succeed following the surprise 13-3 record and a game away from the SB. There will be pressure like he has never know or has felt to be successful. I don’t envy him.

      • rileyg1 says:

Tolzein played better last preseason. Thats why we claimed him.

      • IslandguyJ49ers says:

If we get Peyton, all good. If we don’t and we lose Alex Smith to the dolphins and for some reason we don’t make the playoffs again, then it will have been a mistake. Finally if by some act of righteous karma/voodoo Dolphins draft a good WR and they somehow make it to the playoffs under with Alex Smith as their QB, I’m pretty sure the haters won’t step up and congratulate him for becoming a better QB. I rarely post when I read these blogs but it’s clear that their is a distinct difference between niner fans amd the haters. There are some people that wanted the niners not to do well last yr just because they kept Alex Smith. Now I hear even if we don’t get Peyton I will be glad we don’t have Alex Smith. I am a niner fan meaning I choose a healthy Peyton because it is an upgrade. But I would never want my team to lose for any reason with any QB and not just because of who was starting. If Alex goes to miami and does well kudos to him. He is an upstanding guy and if there is anything i have learned in life it’s that no can set your ceiling for you except yourself. Has he been Elite, NO but can he get there maybe or maybe he can just get to a good consistent level. But to say he will never be…. that’s just fuel and people surprise me everyday by doing things i would never expect.

      • IslandguyJ49ers says:

        (i need a spellcheck …apologies)

    • Ceedub says:

If PM goes to Denver and AS goes to Miami, the Niners sign Josh Johnson to compete with CK7 and Tolzein.

  23. Blaine Spence says:

He could of just signed the deal the team gave him a week ago…now this is the team’s fault?

  24. Prime Time says:

Grant aka piggy backer, where can I send you the crow to stuff your pie hole?

  25. Houston 9er says:

Interesting that Alex would chose to be a backup with the Dolphins. I guess the backup is always the most popular guy in town.

    • Ceedub says:

Alex would go to Miami to compete and win the QB job, not to be a backup.

      • TIM says:

Alex would be a place holder in Miami just like he was here, until something better comes along. Look for Miami to draft a QB.

      • Grant Cohn says:

That would be ridiculous if they signed Smith and then drafted Tannehill instead of Floyd.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

If the $8M is correct, they wouldn’t be drafting a QB in the 1st round. More interesting is that JPhilbin didn’t sign his guy MFlynn. What does that say??

      • Grant Cohn says:

It says Flynn chose the Seahawks over his own guy, Philbin, probobaly. I could be wrong.

      • Houston 9er says:

Ceedub, Matt Moore is a better QB than Alex so if Alex signs there he will be the backup.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Not if the Dolphins are paying Smith $8 million a year.

  26. rileyg1 says:

If the 49ers are concerned about losing PM and AS all they need to do is call PM and ask him if they should sign AS or wait for him to make an announcement. Anything Pm says would tell them what they need to do.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Huhhh?

Why not ask him to announce his decisions then to be a Niner right now? No benefit for any team or player right now if PM waits till Tuesday. They all look like fools at this moment.

    • Ceedub says:

You think PM knows where he wants to go now? It’s possible. If so, a call to him might reveal his intentions if the right questions were asked. It’s possible the Niners already know, but I doubt it.

      • TIM says:

You just don’t get it do you? Alex probably doesn’t want to come back now because he just found out yesterday that the team doesn’t want him for the long term and he would be gone soon anyway. If PM doesn’t come here then Alex’s poor production from last year can be replaced easily and should be able to be improved upon by several other QB’s.

      • Ceedub says:

It’s all conjecture now Tim, hypotheticals. That’s why this blog is here to throw out ideas. Sorry your boy Alex is being shown the door. You need to chill and let the process flow. No telling yet where it ends. That’s what makes this fun to talk about, at least for me.

      • TIM says:

Ceedub: MY GUY ALEX ??? You are the 2nd guy in 2 days to make that crazy error ,calling Alex “my guy”, LOL !!!
I have been looking to replace Alex as the starter for a few years now,you are a newbie I guess?

      • Ceedub says:

I am a newbie to this blog but not to the 49ers (35+ yrs). My humble appologies! :-)

    • Jack Hammer says:

Riley, The 49ers organization probably already knows the answer, which is part of why they are letting Smith explore other options without trying to sign him now.

  27. 49er42 says:

    49er girl:
The three year offer to Alex and the pursuit of PM. Plus I read somewhere the staff did not feel CK is ready to start yet.
The 9ers made an offer to Alex so they wanted him back and where willing to pay him starter money for three years. I don’t think they would have done that if they thought CK was ready to start. I hope CK is watching this and sees he may have a chance to lead a team to the super Bowl in his second year and is working his tail off.

    • DS94everXev says:

Also hope CK sees how quickly he can be set loose in the NFL.

    • TIM says:

Starters money for 3 years but how much was guaranteed ? MM said the contract had an easy out for the Niners when they thought Kaep was ready to step in. No wonder Alex balked at signing a contract that almost had him out the door already when the ink would have still been wet.

  28. bigMike says:

I have been a big Alex Smith supporter. However when you have a chance to grab a top 5 QB in NFL history you do it. With or without PM Alex wasn’t going to be the starting QB for the 9ers in 2013. Alex had a good year last year but if PM was the starting QB n NFC championship Game, we win. Plain and simple. Also no more 8 men n the box with PM. Look for Gore to have a monster year with PM. 9er Offense will probably averages 30 pts a game. With PM the 9ers will be a very tough team to beat. All 3 phases of the team will be top 5 n the league

  29. Grant Cohn says:

Cam Inman tweets: “Source close to Alex Smith says QB is stunned and jaded over his plight w/49ers”

    • Stan says:

Then why did he delay signing? He should have signed as quickly as he could, making it hard for Manning-anybody-to take his job.
Alex should know-when you snoose, you loose.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Gramt

What does that mean in terms of him signing with Miami then? Your opinion, I know.

    • Ceedub says:

He won’t be back. That bridge has been blown to hell. PM better sign or the natives in SF are going to get really, really restless.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Doesn’t matter if PM signs or not based on last year, the only successful year is a SB period.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Seems to be bait and switch by JH which is where MPoole stated in his column. Hey all business so when the dust settles…

      • Grant Cohn says:

It feels like Harbaugh and Baalke are turning the Niners into a competent, successful, updated version of Al Davis’ Raiders.

      • Ceedub says:

So when the dust settles and PM isn’t in SF, Harbaugh’s actions will speak louder than his words. “Who’s got it better than us”?? That won’t resonate anymore.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Good astute observation GC.
I’d rather see a blueprint of BW’s program. What happened to all of that talk. Last I looked this was the 9ers not the Radders. Not a good plan.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Harbaugh’s only NFL coaching experience before the Niners was two years with the Raiders. He was there with Gannon, Rice and Brown. Harbaugh has a much tighter connection to Al Davis than Bill Walsh.

      • TIM says:

        Hof:
If JH put his house on the market for 300,000 and nobody came to take the offer and then a week later someone gave him a million dollars for the house, would you take anyone seriously who came up to him after the sale and complained that he now wants to buy the house for 300,000 ?
Alex had the offer out there and he didn’t like it and now maybe PM is taking his job (or whoever) and now his fans are crying that JH should give back the million and sell the house to Alex
for 300,000 because Alex’s feelings are hurt ??? lol.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Grant

Then MC is completely useless as well then. No vertical speed at all.

      • Grant Cohn says:

He could be a good slot receiver/ split end. He could be a poor-man’s Reggie Wayne for Manning. He has value.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Grant

Who on the Raiders is as slow as MC?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Rice and Brown weren’t so fast in ’02.
Plus, the other receivers on the Niners right now are very fast – Moss, Manningham and Davis.
The Niners need a possession receiver who can go over the middle and Crabtree fills that role.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I know Grant

But Rice and Brown were WCO WR’s by that point. Not Raider deep ball WR’s.

And at this point in time, VD will still be kept into block. The Niners don’t have that “We need to 2 this guy every time on the outside”. So, the defense can still have 2 guys to cover VD if he goes out to catch a pass, and can blitz one of them if he stays into block.

And the Niners OL at this point is not holding up without VD being held in to block.

      • TIM says:

        Grant:
Remember that BW would sit with JH and talk football when JH was at Stanford. He learned some with the Raiders but idolized Bill Walsh .

      • Grant Cohn says:

My understanding is Harbaugh spent much more time with Davis than he did with Walsh.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim and Grant

I think both statements can be true.

        JH idolizing BW.

JH spending lots of time around Al Davis.

      • TIM says:

I think our O line will be one of the best in the League, when we get a RG and if PM comes here he doesn’t need the time we have been used to Alex needing,he gets the ball out on time and on target. And Williams is a very fast receiver and can go over the middle or deep !

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Your Crabtree agenda is a failure.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Jack

If they want a possession WR and not pay over 5 million for him, they can find one just as good as MC for a lot less money.

P.S. Crab15 a huge MC fan said that he is now the 3rd best WR on the team. How many teams MUST have their 3rd WR, or the whole world falls apart?

        None.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, if Crab 15 said that MC is now the 3rd best receiver on the team he is wrong.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Excuse you Jack.

You MEANT to say that your opinion differs from mine, and Crab15′s. And that neither of us are wrong until we see what they (WR’s) can do on the field, right? That we withhold any judgement until we see them practice/play.

Of course, that is what an objective person may write.

    • 49erGirl says:

And Barrows just tweeted they’re offering Alex $8m/year.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        I’ll update the blog.

      • TIM says:

More than a fair offer to Alex from Miami !!! Good for him, more power to him, except when we play them (if he is the starter?).
Funny how sad the Miami Franchise has become. They lost out on JH and then on PM and now they get Alex, lol. I thought we had it bad as Niners fans over the last 8 years or so .

      • mbabco says:

Hmm, isn’t that the offer he left on the table with us? Of course, we don’t have all the details and guaranteed money, etc.

  30. Dennis says:

Has anybody read anywhere that the 49ers actually put an offer on the table for Peyton?

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Dennis

If so, they never gave a dollar amount or terms.

      • TIM says:

All rumors. But “sources ” all say that the Niners are willing to match the 5 year 90 million dollar offered by Denver that Tenn has also agreed to match.

      • Dennis says:

Thanks DS. That is what I am thinking also.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Tim

There is no way they can match money or terms with either team. Not if you plan on having PW on this team.

      • TIM says:

Don’t argue with me DS,you are contradicting MM.

      • DS94everXev says:

        So Tim.

Where does it say that the Niners can afford PM for $90 million and not totally destroy the future of the team in the process?

As it stands now, some think we will lose Bowman.

P.S. Unless you are claiming you are MM, how am I aruging with MM? I posted to you.

  31. Woody says:

Manning goes to the highest bidder (non Niners), says they will ‘give me the best chance to win, which is all I care about’. Alex goes to Miami. Niners end up starting Kapernick. Fans spend 4 weeks on how awesome he is. 4 weeks on how he needs to improve his throwing motion. 4 weeks on how he needs to get better faster. 4 weeks talking about drafting a new QB next year.

  32. Razoreater says:

It’s down to the 49ers or Titans. I will be shocked if Manning does not sign with the 49ers.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Razor, I wouldn’t say that with Denv sitting on $40++ in cap space. They could get PM and MW. TBD.

      • Grant Cohn says:

If you click on the link to Klis’ article, there’s a poll on the right side of the page where Broncos fans can vote on if they think Manning will become a Bronco. They mostly think he won’t be signing with Denver.

      • TIM says:

MM said the Niners could get PM and Wallace if they wanted to do it ,with their cap space. Maybe they don’t think they need Wallace if they get PM,since Manning will allow our Receivers to show what they have instead of looking bad with a poor QB throwing somewhere near then,if he threw at all.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

There enamored with TT what do you expect? lol

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *They’re*

      • TIM says:

I heard on ESPN radio this morning that they thought Tenn was fading out of the picture and it was between us and Denver.. I still think he picks Tenn, for a bunch of reasons, none of which are football related.

      • Grant Cohn says:

You really think Manning will let his wife make this decision for him?

      • TIM says:

But they are Tebowing up in Colorado and Tenn right now ! :)(praying for PM that is ).

      • Dennis says:

Grant, when you get married you will find out the answer to that question is absolutely!!!

      • Dennis says:

Truth be told, Alex probably held out because his wife told he was worth much more than they were offering.

On a side note 8mil in Miami is worth close to a milllion more than it is in California.

      • TIM says:

        Grant:
The combination of his wife’s family being in Tenn and him having gone to college there and being idolized there still to this day and that the owner of the Titans is offering a lifetime contract and a part ownership and front office job when he retires from playing …it’s hard to beat all that when you just have a possible SB ring or two to offer like us.Besides,if he takes them to the playoffs and beyond it will just add to his legend and if they lose everyone will blame the orgaiization as just a losing Franchise. He can’t lose,UNLESS all he really covets is a couple of SB rings !

      • MontanaMan16 says:

Yes, but PM’s wife’s cousin’s uncle’s friend’s grandson has a freind who played little league in SF so PM has ties to SF too!

  33. msclemons67 says:

And now the Dolphins will suck for two years while Smith struggles to learn a new system.

Dammit, it could have been the Seahawks sucking. Damn you Matt Flynn.

  34. Hoferfan67 says:

Or it could be the 9ers sucking. Is it a successful year in 2012 if they don’t make the SB?!!

    • DS94everXev says:

      no

    • Stan says:

Would you say the Mayans are successful if the world ended in 2012? Its all relative.

    • TIM says:

You are not hoping so are you Hof ? Sounds that way. I hope not,you always struck me as a true fan of the TEAM.I guess it is just the stress of the realization that Alex may be gone that is getting to yopu,I understand .

    • msclemons67 says:

It might be the 49ers sucking, but Harbaugh turned a bust into a decent game manager so I’m not too worried.

If nothing else, at least after 7 years the team is seriously looking for a franchise quarterback instead of clinging to failed draft pick. That albatross is almost gone.

      • rocket says:

I just hope Manning picks SF, because I’m not sure I like the alternative if Smith is out of the picture. Kap has a ton of talent but hard to believe he’ll be ready to start this year and lead a team well into the playoffs.

To answer Hofers question, it doesn’t have to end with a SB to be a successful year, but they can’t take a huge step back either. That would be a disaster.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @rocket

What is a huge step back?

Losing in the first playoff game? Or not making the playoffs? (and please pick one or something else. I realize the problem with the fist failure if you can’t make the playoffs).

  35. 49er42 says:

If Alex is “stunned” by his treatment then he really does not understand the NFL.
He has not had the leverage to get a long term deal. His numbers over his career don’t justify it. This was a chance for him to play in the same system, improve his game and if he could win a Super Bowl, make it to the Probowl then he could go for the big contract, not now. His failure to grasp this has put him in a situation where if he goes to Miami his career will in all likelyhood be as a journeymen QB.
He should have signed the deal the 49ers offered him.

  36. Hov says:

Yesssss!!!! No more Alex 3 and out smith thank you guwd!!!!!!!!

  37. mike says:

Manning and his agent are dirty — I have never liked the Mannings with how they do business. This is about as low down as one can go. Mannings agent is playing the 49ers as leverage.

Since when has a QB ever done anything by going to a completely new organization after a successful career with another one ? Joe Montana at KC comes to mind.

This is turning into a disaster for the 49ers. My money is on Tenneseee to get Manning and the 49ers will be left high and dry.

I will never root for any Manning – Ever – They are rednecks from the south without any class.

    • DS94everXev says:

A long lost relative of mine supposedly coached PM in high school. Get tired of hearing about it.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @mike

This will be a huge disaster.

Had the Niners not landed JH to be our coach last year, it would not have been that bad. I mean we were coming off a horrible year and a horrible HC. Just about anybody would have been better.

But this year? We were thiiiiissssss close to the Super Bowl. To lose the guy who lead us there as well as the guy who we wanted in his place would be absolute disaster.

    • rocket says:

      Mike,

Where’s a link to a story detailing all the things you just posted? I just read today that Manning’s agent isn’t even a part of the process in the negotiations right now. Manning is taking his time and interviewing his choices. Nothing dirty about it at all.

  38. Stan says:

Imagine being Teirney and Davis or Lund on THEGAME..HUGE moves by the 49ers..and your station has you sitting out the NCAA’s.
Another programing decision I dont quite get.

  39. Razoreater says:

I hate Manning, always have. But I’ll be Goddamned if I can begin a second dynasty under Manning I am all in. We need at least 2 more Super Bowls.

  40. ninermd says:

    http://youtu.be/uzfCgycpoqs

Mr smith obviously never heard this classic. I never in a million years would have thought he’d be gone because HE didn’t sign a contract offer. WOW

  41. Paul Izawa says:

Just a foregone conclusion that AS signs a long-term contract with Miami. The Dolphins will entice him with a lucrative deal–much better than the 3-year, $24 million offered by the Niners. Smith will sign with mixed emotions because he loves the Bay area and is connected with the 49ers and especially JH. AS was a class act, not too common among present-day players. As for Manning, forget it. He most likely will wind up in Tennessee because of his close ties there. If he somehow decides to join the Niners, the sole reason is because SF offers him the best chance to play in the S

  42. bbthekitty says:

If they don’t get Manning, they’ll get Josh Johnson, and they might get JJ anyway. JJ will be light years better than Alex in Harbaugh’s offense.

    • mike says:

What are you smoking ? How has JJ proven that he is even one minute ahead of anyone ? Answer – He hasn’t.

      Josh Johnson ? Forget it.

    • Dennis says:

Based on what? I saw Josh Johnson play. He is not that good.

  43. rileyg1 says:

The 49ers will try to get Manning on the cheap because they have a better chance to get to the super bowl. This is there modus operandi. The titans and the broncos can price the 9ers out of this thing unless Manning is willing to eat 10 or 20 million to be a 49er. NOT

    • TIM says:

Word is that the Niners will match the 5 year 90 million dollar contract the Broncos and Tenn have put on the table. It’s in his court now(where have I heard that before ,lol ?)

      • Ceedub says:

5 yrs – 90 mil and still bring in Wallace? Sounds like cap hell to me unless the cap is raised substantially in the next few years.

  44. VA49er says:

Hello, my name is Trent Dilfer… I mean, Alex Smith.

  45. MidWestNiner says:

This is a very dangerous game that the Niners are playing. If Smith signs with the Dolphins and the Niners whiff on Manning, then there will be questions at RG AND QB. And for anybody who thinks CK is ready to take the reins, then I pose this simple question: Why are the Niners going after Manning if CK is ready to take the next step? Going bargain hunting at the QB position hardly ever works in the NFL. Don’t assume that the team can win with any QB. That’s the same logic Billy Beane uses with the A’s in baseball.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @midwest

“Why are the Niners going after Manning if CK is ready to take the next step?”

Good question. Nobody has an answer for it. And PM does not want to “mentor” anybody. If he did, he would have mentored the Colt QB kid last year and stayed to “mentor” AL this year.

      • Neal says:

The Niners want to win a Super bowl and it is a upgrade from Smith or Kaep. They have a two yr window.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Because Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning.

      • DS94everXev says:

That is a tag line on a bumper sticker.

Not a reasoned answer. If CK is thought to be better than AS at this point, and AS had us at the title game, how much better can ANY QB who is 36+ years of age and better likelihood of the old guy taking us to the promised land if the guy you say is not as good as CK got us to the title game?

You have CK as your starter. He is younger and could grow with the team. Much like JM was able to do.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Who do you think Frank Gore or Donte Whitner or Patrick Willis would rather have as his starting QB in ’12? Peyton Manning or Colin Kaepernick? Don’t over think this one.

      • DS94everXev says:

If they don’t have PM, then what?

If PM does not get the Niners into and wins the Super Bowl, what improvements would have been made?

        That took under 40 seconds.

      • Grant Cohn says:

You didn’t answer my question, you just asked me two more questions.

      • DS94everXev says:

        They want AS.

Those questions are legit if things turn out the wrong way.

The whole locker room was behind AS last year. If the Niners don’t land PM, and get AS back, AS will know that his teammates wanted somebody else.

That magical “team” feeling will not be present this coming year.

And CK is a long ways out as well. A long ways out.

      • Neal says:

        @DS,

Your like a child who asks a million questions per day.

      • DS94everXev says:

Thanks for showing up and ruining an adult discussion Neal.

        You are good for something.

    • msclemons67 says:

The same reason they went after Manning when Alex was still around.

      Upgrade.

      • MidWestNiner says:

But at what cost? Manning won’t be around much longer in the NFL and there is no way CK could replace him afterwards since his skill set is completely different than Manning’s. Manning is also said to take almost all of the teams’ practice reps. How does that help CK at all? And don’t say he’ll be a good mentor to CK. Manning’s history shows otherwise.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yes JH will be the teacher but the offense is still different when PM is running it. Don’t expect any QB draws or roll outs.

      • rocket says:

Yep. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This has more to do with Manning than it does Smith. They were happy with Smith, but when you get a shot to upgrade to a HOF QB you have to explore it. You have to take the emotions out of it and make a decision that is best for your team.

  46. ck says:

ck is the answer honestly…i dnt think manning will land in sf no other quarterback makes sense wit the niners except for ck..relationship wit smith is ruined he’s def going to miami…manning signs somewhere else hasselback is old and mentor ck a little bit but i say start ck..he will throw more picks than alex but will hav more td’s and yards!!! AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT??

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

      You’re guessing.
I’m afraid you may be right about the relationship with Alex at this point, though.

  47. Razoreater says:

Baalke/Harbaugh feel that there will not be a big drop off in offensive production with CK in command while there would be tons of potential with each regular season game under his belt. Hasslebeck could also be an option.

  48. MidWestNiner says:

If for some reason Manning picks the Niners, then or would be best to trade CK. CK is a different kind of QB mold than Manning. An immobile QB teaching a mobile QB is a recipe for disaster. It would be best to try to draft a QB in the mold of Manning so that the offense won’t have to learn another offense when Manning retires.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah, it doesn’t fit but again TBD.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Harbaugh, not Manning, would be teaching Kaepernick.

      • Brandon Conway says:

Exactly. The QB mentor thing always gets overblown.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Which offense will he teach him Grant? Manning’s or Harbaugh’s? It isn’t as easy as people think.

      • rocket says:

Manning isn’t a stupid person. He will learn Harbaugh’s offense, and I’m sure they will install some things that Manning likes to do as well. It’s been reported that Manning isn’t looking to come in and have a team switch their offense to what he ran in Indy.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @midwest

If PM wanted to mold anybody, he would not have left Indy to begin with.

Why would he mold a guy who was not drafted on the team he was on, and when he had the chance to mold the guy who will replace him on his original love “the Colts”?

      • TIM says:

No need for PM to mold Kaep or Tolzien. They can watch and learn, something they couldn’t do with alex, because Alex didn’t do anything well enough to watch and be able to learn from. As a matter of fact Alex needs to learn many things himself, many !

    • TIM says:

The coaching staff will simply adjust the playbook to take advantage of Kaeps skills,.as any good staff would do for any player that is in the lineup. If Manning were to come here he would not necessarily bring his old offense with him. He has said that he is open to change and actually looks forward to something different . But if he is here of course they will adjust the playbook to suit him, like they do for all the QB’s. But it will probably still be JH’s wco .

    • msclemons67 says:

Montana didn’t mentor Young – Walsh did.

Favre didn’t mentor Rodgers – McCarthy did.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Those examples are moot since they remained in the same style of offense. Manning’s offense will be different from Harbaugh’s. I’ve never heard Manning described as a West Coast offense QB.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I agree msc.

Careful though. Some think sitting behind a guy who does not want to help you, talk to you or interact in any way with you after the team photo is actually “mentoring”.

I can tell you that all my mentors in my life more closely relate to the style Walsh mentored SY and McCarthy mentoring AR.

  49. ck says:

WTF PEYTON CAN HELP CK A WHOLE LOT…HE MIGHT NOT B ABLE TO MENTOR HIM ON RUNNING BUT HE CAN SHOW HIM HOW AN ELITE QB THROWS AND STUDIES THE FIELD, READ BLITZES..ETC DNT SAY ITS GUNA B A DISASTER BCUZ THATS A COMPLETELY WRONG STATEMENT!!

  50. GIANT FAN says:

Too bad AS didn’t sign with with Seattle. Woulda been awesome watching him getting him get owned twice a year by his former team.

  51. steelematic says:

DS… Because the guy wants to ppay and win. Luck also wants to play and he knows hes ready. There would not have been any metoring goin on just when will luck play.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @steel

PM was the offensive coach. That is why the Colts fell so far. With him not in the huddle, the Colts didn’t know what to do. An inherit problem if you have the QB do the offense.

There would have been nobody better to coach up AL than him. PM was the coach. When PM went down, the Colt HC even said that he wished he could help the new kid out more, but he can’t. Because PM did everything.

PM wants to play. He does not want to mentor anybody. That would include CK as well. A QB who is quite different in what he brings to the table as well than PM himself does.

  52. msclemons67 says:

“In Harbaugh we trust. As long as he picks Alex.”

    • 49erGirl says:

Guess I never stopped to read the fine print, although always suspected there was something in there to be suspicious of….

      Lol!

    • MidWestNiner says:

Sounds like a whine to me. I just don’t see a chance for CK if Manning signs with the team. I will throw my support behind Manning if he does join the Niners, but I will also be worried about the team’s future.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

PM isn’t going to a team for a 1 year plan. PM will go where he can play for 3-4 years which will stifle CK’s growth. That’s why I wouldn’t be thrilled with a signing of PM, but I’m all in as a 9er fan.

      • Grant Cohn says:

A 39-year old Manning probably won’t be better than a 27-year old Jake Locker or Colin Kaepernick. He couldn’t guarantee himself a starting spot on either the 49ers or the Titans for 3-4 seasons. Realistically, he’ll have two more high-level seasons. Maybe three.

    • BigP says:

Yeah, he was a genius until a couple of days ago. Lol. The posts by the Smithers have reached a point of sheer lunacy.

  53. Chicago49er says:

Alex should wait for the niners, most likely PM is going to sign with TN.

  54. Razoreater says:

    50/50 chance

    Super Bowl/Great Football Staff 49ers
    Ownership/Fan worship Titans

If you were Manning which would you choose.

    • MidWestNiner says:

You need to look at the Titans again. It isn’t as cut-and-dry as you think.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Razor

The only team remotely any good in the AFC South (Titans division) were the Texans. And the Texans lost their best defensive player, and historically just suck when the pressure is on. Last year they finally showed up. Both the Cotls and the Jags suck and won’t get better next year to vie for the division crown.

Knowing that, the likelihood of PM making the playoffs playing for the Titans is not much different than making the playoffs a a Niner. Plus the AFC is now weaker than the NFC. The wildcard teams in the NFC will be tougher, better teams than the ones in the AFC.

The Niners are better than the Titans. No doubt. But the Niners have a lot tougher schedule and playoff venture than the Titans would. But the Cards and Seahawks ended the year on a high note. The only bad team in our division will be the Rams.

So, is it easier to make the playoffs and a Super Bowl if you are in a division with very possibly 3 playoff quality bound teams or only 2?

    • Ceedub says:

The Titans offer Tennessee. That is where he and his family feel comfortable and are worshiped among the likes of Davy Crockett and Elvis Presley. His wife is from Tennessee. If he thinks he can take the Titans to the next level, he’ll go there. Just my opinion, hope I’m wrong.

  55. Chicago49er says:

he will do much better in this system than in miami

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Chicago, JPhilbin did quite a good job with ARodgers. AS may continue to elevate his career with this move. PM signs here and everyone is happy. Regardless, just waiting for the dust to settle. lol

  56. The Seth says:

2 separated shoulders, 2 coaches that’s publicly castrated him, 7 years of media ridiculing him and 7 years of fan bashing him I don’t blame him if he does go and hope his next 7 years are better than his first.

  57. Vegas9er says:

Houston 9er your post was hilarious!!

  58. Bar None says:

Grant, Once things calm down in the next few weeks you should pen a piece on Davis’ influence with JH. I’ve read Kawakami opine on it a few times (him knowing JH from when he was quality control with the Raiders). It’s an interesting subject.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I’d love to. You got it.

    • TIM says:

Don’t forget to give equal time to how much Bill Walsh influenced him too ! Sounds to me that he idolized Walsh and only worked for Al.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I’ll get to the bottom of it!

      • Ceedub says:

Harbaugh has a picture of Walsh hanging on his office wall showing him shaking hands with Walsh when he became the Stanford coach. Harbaugh feels Walsh’s legacy at 4949 Centennial Blvd everyday.

      • Grant Cohn says:

It’s the picture that has you sold?

      • Bar None says:

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7-9kQJ1_sI&feature=related

If you want to know JH’s early football mind, watch the above video. At the start he talks about how much he learned in the “think tank” (his words) with Davis.

I’m not talking down the influence of Walsh – that’s what Tim is infering. What I’m talking about is the little known, and reported on, fact that Davis had an impact on his thinking of the NFL game and talent evaluation.

      • msclemons67 says:

I think Al Davis and Bill Walsh both had a big influence on Harbaugh.

I also think Bo Schembechler had a bigger influence than either Bill or Al. The 49ers offense last year was classic Bo.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Good call.

  59. jeff condie says:

After all this is over, I expect Smith’s agent Tom Condon will be sued.
First why couldn’t he close the 3 year 24 million deal that was supposedly offered to Smith?
-Alex would of done anything short of extrodinary to get this deal done.
According to all his comments “obviously, Alex wanted to be a forty-niner.
-On the other end, according to all coments…Harbaugh obviously wanted Smith to be his Quarterback.
The big question here is in the meantime, what went wrong?
In my opinion Tom Condon in order to get more bidders and to intentionally drive up the price for both Quarterbacks. Told the 49ers organization that Manning would be very interested in playing Quarterback for them. Which is true, but all the time in the back of his mind knowing that the San Francisco organization would never be willing to match the 90 million that Denver eventually has offered.
Without hearing anymore…I am pointing the finger directly at Peyton and Alex’s agent – Tom Condon

    • TIM says:

      Jeff:
We don’t know but the odds are that the contract that the Niners offered Alex had a clause in it that let the team out of it as soon as they felt Kaep was ready to take over(standard 3 year deal with the 2nd and 3rd year being voided by either party if requested).. It was probably a contract that Smith thaought had him on the way out the door while the ink was still wet. So,why would alex sign that? He knows now that the team doesn’t want him and that they believe he can never be their long term QB,so with that realization he balked at signing, wouldn’t you ?
Alex is better off and the team is better off if Alex goes his own way and they either get PM or another vet in here or the real JH era starts now…either way it’s better than stringing alex along for another wasted year, for both him and the team (and the fans). Alex was always just a placeholder for Kaep and now he knows that for sure.

  60. mike says:

What a disaster this has turned into – Payton Manning is statute one hit away from ending up in the hospital. He is playing the 9ers for everything he can get out of Tennesee. I thought Harbaugh would be smarter than this. What a nightmare.

    • TIM says:

      Or…what a dream come true !!!

    • pope says:

Not only that: the Niners gave contracts to Randy Moss, Carlos Rogers & (last year) Frank Gore. That’s not a sign of a rebuilding (Kaepnernick) or remade (Josh Johnson) team. They can’t afford to take a step backwards with those ageing investments; it’s Matt Hasselbeck or bust if Peyton goes elsewhere. Except Denver is also looking at Hass & Alex Smith (QB coach Adam Gase is a ex-Niner assistant.)

  61. 7x7er says:

    Grant,
Wow. When you forecasted at 40% likelihood of Smith being with the 49ers, I had my doubts. Now, it looks like you were right.

I know if PM doesn’t pick SF, the tag line is the 49ers got screwed, but I’m actually ok with it. They put a value on Smith and stuck to it. People say they weren’t consistent with him, but that is consistent with how they have handled every other player. I’m looking forward to the new 49ers, where everyone gets judged by their performance, not some theoretical ability they may or may not have based upon being a high draft pick.

Question for you: if PM isn’t coming to SF, will the niners now make a run at Wallace with their available cap space? Whoever the QB is will need all the weapons they can get.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners went after Mike Wallace in that scenario. Moss may not be on board if Manning signs elsewhere – who knows?

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Yup. A nice notion. They would have the cap room to sign Wallace. If Pittsburgh matched the offer, that helps the other Harbaugh and if they let Wallace go, that also helps the other Harbaugh.

      • undercenter says:

@ Grant I dont know about the Wallace thing but I was thinking the samething about Moss.

      • DS94everXev says:

Who the QB is should have no impact at all on trying to get Wallace, the best WR we can get.

The starting QB (anybody) would benefit greatly with Wallace. If they (QB) don’t get that, then they should not be signed.

If the Niners can’t compete after giving AS $8 million lets say, or PM $12 million, at least they tried. If they don’t pursue the best player at their weakest position, then something is wrong. Egos are too huge and need to be knocked down a peg.

  62. Stan says:

ch 7′s Mike Schulman “Jim Harbaugh might have outsmarted himself” Shu said with a serious look.
    HOW FAST THEY TURN!

    • Stan says:

Whoa!..He said “Harbaugh has completely undermind confidence in him in the locker room”..Boom!..finally ” How can his players trust anything he says?” KAPOW!.
      Genius…to SATAN!..lol..

  63. Tree Limb says:

Didn’t he have a contract on the table that he didn’t sign? Just a Yes or a No will work for me. If A.Smith have 25mill in front of him and didn’t sign the contract than…adios..
I asked this yesterday…How much has the 49ers given to A.Smith over the years? I don’t know a fast way to find my post on this page…I used to be able to see what I posted but no longer…unless I didn’t get the memo on the secret hand shake…
    I don’t think Denver
I Think Matt Hasselbeck will be a Titan or 49er
I think if Manning does sign with Denver….were screwed….
But then again thats me posting and I am normally totally wrong…
But back in the day when Nolan was having Roger and Smith do dumb stuff to see where the head was and Rogers balk at the stupid stuff I knew right then and there that Rogers was the guy…..He was like “What do you want a brain surgeon or an NFL QB……”

Is gonna be a fun 48hrs…..

  64. Tree Limb says:

BTW if he does sign with Miami…How big of a relief will we all have and how many us will ever say “Damn it Alex Smith would have made that throw…”

  65. Crab15 says:

We are now the NFL version of the New York Yankees. Everyone wants to play here!!

  66. Brodie2Washington says:

Its possible that the biggest risk the Niners are taking in the Manning race is that if all falls apart, Kaepernick starts a year before they expected him to.

In fact, if they quietly liked Kaeperick for 2012, it would makse sense to jack up the cap prices of quarterbacks (like Flynn) and pressure rivals to sign early (like Kolb) by expressing interest in Manning.

Or another fun paranoid notion… Alex Smith and Harbaugh secretly know Alex will be a Niner next year, but their just messing with the league for the fun of it. “Hey Alex, thanks for carring my golf bags. If you fly to Miami I will pay for your ticket and spot yu a case of micro-brew…”

  67. NinersRoc says:

Well….change is gonna come! I like Alex Smith, but as long as we keep winning I’m happy. If we don’t, Baalke & JH are out in 2 years probably which would suck even more.

    • DS94everXev says:

If they kept AS, I doubt you say that TB and JH are gone in 2 years no matter what happens.

If AS sucked, then they could dump him. If he wins a Super Bowl, you definitely keep AS and JH around.

The only way this works out is if the Niners land PM and win a Super Bowl, or AS resigns. Or CK wins a Super Bowl in the next 2-3 years.

      • Neal says:

        yea DS,
Any of those 3 things can happen in your last sentence. I am not 100% convinced that the Niners will sign Peyton.

  68. undercenter says:

PM without a doubt is one of the best QBs to ever play the game. No doubt the year before PM got hurt he was hands down better then most currently playing the game. My expectations of PM is reserved and I think and hope he will perform quite well. I do note not one very good QB who spent most of their career with one team who changed teams has ever won the championship. This team is a super bowl team no matter who QBs them. Considering that most in here blamed Smith for not making the SB, when most in here thought we would be 6 and 10 at best, is the same thinking going to be apllied to the next QB if we dont make it in 2012. If we dont make it is it going to be PMs fault or CKs fault or Tolzien fault or whoevers fault. If we dont make it, that is when the logic that it was Smith fault for not making it will fall by the wayside. It seems to be the parting of the ways for Smith which I hope he wins every game except the games he plays against us. I am on board for the next QB and as I did with Smith I will support him till the next QB. I will support him know matter who trashes him or calls him names or all the other crap that happens. I am ready for the draft and the 2012 season cant come soon enough for me. Also noted to my knowledge PM hasnt signed with us and Smith hasnt signed with anyone else as of yet. Anything can happen.

    • TIM says:

But surely all you that are waiting to put blame on Kaep or Tolzien will give them at least 7 years of bad play to learn how to play in the NFL,right ? lol

      • undercenter says:

I am not prepared to blame thats not my game. But there is a huge difference about the quality of the team and management back then and now.

      • undercenter says:

Tim I also understand this is a team game. And for the ones that like to blame and there are many here that do they would only have to wait four or five years as thats when the bashing began not seven years.

      • DS94everXev says:

        No Tim

I don’t hate (blame) either of those guys. I was excited we got such an athlete in CK, and such a composed young man in Tolzein.

I was also happy AS came back. All 3 are possible. If not, then I live in the world of the impossible made possible.

  69. Grant Cohn says:

Jason Cole just tweeted this: “Only way Dolphins get Alex Smith is if Manning goes to SF. Even if Fins pay more, Smith wants to be on Calif.”

I guess Smith isn’t so jaded after all.

    • TIM says:

Just as I feared,I said Alex will be starting for us next year and it looks like it might happen after all,lol He may still be starting for us in 20 years ,lol !!!

      • TIM says:

Poor Alex, will still come crawling back with his tail between his legs, even though he knows he is just a placeholder ??? I may lose the respect I have always felt for the guy if he doesn’t step out on his own and face the real World.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

I wonder what are the chances of Manning already knowing who he will sign with, and the chosen team has quietly been informed.

The whole crazy thing about the Niner interest in Manning was it was supposed to be a secret even to this point.

    • Ceedub says:

So if PM decides against the Niners in a few days Alex could be back? I think my head is going to explode.

      • TIM says:

Alex will be the QB as long as we all live ,lol . It’s like the slasher in all those horror movies,he gets killed off over and over but just keeps coming back to kill (the team) again.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, which means we’ll have to put up with your long winded backhanded comments. lol

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Interesting. Sounds like AS got a call…

    • msclemons67 says:

      “Ah! Well a-day!
What evil looks Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the albatross
      About my neck was hung”

  70. Acopp says:

Anybody that thinks Matt Hasselback is the answer, or is a better option than Smith who already knows the offense is completely ignorant like most of you niner fans are. If they want to win they will either sign Alex or Peyton. It’s that simple. Hasselback? Really? Hahahaha I remember you guys saying you wanted mcnabb pure ignorance

  71. c.rod says:

I thought this day would never come!!!! Who cares who our QB is, its not alex anymore!! Super Bowl here we come! Even with Kap or Hasselback,

  72. MontanaMan16 says:

NFL.com is reporting Smith left without a contract and the Dolphins have a Monday meeting with Garrard. It says Smith is still considering the 9ers offer.

  73. Prime Time says:

Smartest guy in the room right now, Tom Condon, the dumbest, who else, Tim!

    • TIM says:

I Am the one and only that started saying yesterday and never waivered, that Alex would probably be our QB next year again. I know that the slasher in those horror movies always comes back to kill again and again and thery can never be rid of him ,lol.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I’m still not so sure. If Tenn or 9ers get PM, AS could go to Denv and TT could go to Mia and become, the second coming…

      • TIM says:

…But I actually had hope when the reports were that he might sign with Miami. But I never believed it in my heart and still don’t. and I have been saying that PM will go to Tenn . I hope I am wrong on both counts.
But the slasher is coming after the Niners again and Alex will be our QB for decades to come . lol Run and hide kids,

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, I’ve never deviated that PM was going to Tenn and stating the reasons why this morning. It will be interesting…

      • TIM says:

Hof,you and I have been saying that PM was going to Tenn…But I was the only one predicting that alex was coming back. I hope I am wrong on both counts but this IS getting funny !

  74. blingbling says:

But of course! I’m surprised Tim hasn’t clamored for Nate Davis yet.

  75. Neal says:

I hope Peyton does not do a 1 hour ESPN show, like King James did. He appears he has more class.

  76. Big Sky Niner says:

Most who write into the papers and the so-called experts who write for those rags think the 49ers have the inside track for Peyton Manning because the locals have the best all around squad. The conventional wisdom is that Alex Smith is nothing more than dog dirt and the Niners are only a QB away from a certain Super Bowl victory.

I think the 49ers are playing with fire. And, they might well get burned.

Signing Peyton Manning does not guarantee a Super Bowl win next season. I am sure the rest of the league will still suit up and play the games. The Colts’ dismal performance in 2011 gives the casual fan the impression that Manning was the whole team. The reality is that the Colts laid down like dogs last season. Don’t get me wrong. Manning is one of the game’s all time greats but, every player on the 2011 Colts roster should be ashamed of himself. And, their coaching staff richly deserved pink slips. Football is a team game and no one player is ever the difference between making the playoffs and being last in the league.

The 49er defense is very good. But, it isn’t on a par with the ’85 Bears or the 2000 Ravens. Football is a game of field position. The 49er defense was greatly benefitted by an offense that tied a league record for fewest turnovers and superior special teams. The Niner defense was not asked to play on a short field as often as most other teams.

Harbaugh is regarded in the Bay Area as a “quarterback whisperer.” But, is that really true? To hear most tell it, Harbaugh “managed” Alex Smith, protected him and squeezed out every ounce of acceptable performance possible. Smith’s stats in the second half of 2010 were comparable to his 2011 performance. So what was Harbaugh’s impact? And, now we are to believe that with Harbaugh’s deft handling Kaepernick is a can’t miss elite, franchise quarterback in the waiting. Kaepernick had a successful college career playing in a gimmick offense, in a minor college program, in a second rate conference, against second and third rate opposition. His future performance is anything but a given. The reality is that no one including Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke knows whether or not Colin Kaepernick will pan out.

Is Jim Harbaugh a better judge and developer of quarterbacks than was Bill Walsh? Glenn Dickey used to regularly feed us the baloney that Walsh was the only person in the NFL that recognized Montana’s future greatness and he could, therefore, wait until the third round to pick the future Hall of Famer. Poppycock. Walsh had no idea how good Montana would turn out to be or he would have traded up to get him not wanting to risk the possibility that some other team would pick him. The proof of Walsh’s fallibility in picking quarterbacks came in the 2000 draft. Walsh was doing the picking for the 49ers and the locals desperately needed a quarterback. Walsh passed over Tom Brady and picked Giovanni Carmazzi. How could a quarterback guru, who was considered widely to be a genius, miss that badly?

What is Harbaugh’s track record identifying QB diamonds in the rough? Andrew Luck? I don’t think so. He was a top national recruit. Josh Johnson? He has been less than ordinary at Tampa Bay.

Who knows? Maybe Kaepernick will turn out to be an all time great. But, at this point I wouldn’t bet the ranch on it. The history of the league is chock full of good athletes coming out of college that never made it at the QB position.

If Manning is not signed the 49ers and their fans had better hope and pray they can mend fences with, and soothe the feelings of, Alex Smith. Despite his limitations, and in the absence of Peyton Manning, Alex Smith gives the team the best chance of winning this year

I am sure you have, but look at the most recent blog.

P.S. Nicely constructed post. Whether somebody agrees or disagrees, you did a nice job explaining things and being reasonable.

      Very good post!

Thanks for taking the time to read my note. I know I am in the minority on the QB issue. I am not trying to belittle anyone else’s perspective and I don’t want to provoke anyone.

“Alex will be the QB as long as we all live ,lol . It’s like the slasher in all those horror movies,he gets killed off over and over but just keeps coming back to kill (the team) again.”

LOL, even though he’s only walking briskly, and his prey is in a full sprint, he always finds a way to catch up!

Comments are from same people that wanted Mooch & Garcia gone.

“Smith struggled early in his career but threw for 3,150 yards and 17 touchdowns with only five interceptions last season as San Francisco went 13-3 and made the NFC title game after an eight-year playoff drought. He orchestrated six comeback wins, four on the road.”

After years of being with bad coaches and bad offensive coordinators Smith stepped up last year after some good coaching and stability was brought in. Only 5 interceptions ? Not too bad.

      Sure he did ,lol
