Alex Smith to visit the Seahawks this week, upset at the 49ers

According to Matt Barrows who cites “a source familiar with Alex Smith’s itinerary,” Smith will visit the Seahawks this week.

As you know, he’s visiting the Dolphins today. With either team, Smith would probably have to compete for a starting job and would probably have to settle for a smaller contract, either in years or money or both, than the one he could have accepted from the Niners as early as December, according to the team – three years, $24 million.

He clearly didn’t expect it to come to this.

Barrows also delivered this nugget in his blog: “Smith, according to sources, is upset at the 49ers, perhaps not because the monetary offer they made him – reportedly $24 million over three years – but because of the job security it provides. Smith felt the 49ers made a commitment to him as their future starter that was not reflected in the contract offer.”

If that’s true, it sounds like Smith really did want a four or a five-year contract, and he was being disingenuous when he told Kim Coyle he was happy with the three-year offer.

What do you make of these developments?

  1. Hoferfan67 says:

GC, give those that comment here some credit. Didn’t we say it first! Ok so the great MB confirms it!!! lol

    • Grant Cohn says:

Did you have a source with knowledge of Smith’s itinerary???

      • Hoferfan67 says:

After he stops by the cleaners, it’s off to the store for a quart of non fat milk, then off to the Mazda dealer in Seattle he found by hitting the link on this blog, then…

      • Grant Cohn says:

….then off to cars.com to boost his confidence before he goes to the Mazda dealer…

      • Burnt says:

All he would have to say is that he has a “source” intimate with Smiths itinerary and he would be as credible as MB.

I mean c’mon. the legitimacy of the claim hangs on the word “source”. Ridiculous.

But thanks for regurgitating MB’s work Grant. Pops must be proud.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

But Mazda offers him a good 3 yr deal (or was it) before he contemplates the Acura dealer he sees across the street, meanwhile…

  2. PA says:

    message to AS.
Stop listening to L. Sprewell. No one would offer you 8 mil per year.

  3. 23jordan says:

This just in from T.O., part owner of the Allen Wranglers,

Alex Smith will be my Quarterback here this year(In Tears, wearing sunglasses) he is a busy man.

    • AES says:

(lol) 23J. But don’t count your chickens just yet. We will all know by tomorrow or Tuesday.
BTW, Alex has earned some respect from me (but funny just the same).

  4. 23jordan says:

    Grant,

Alex Smith is not flying all over the U.S. because he intends on coming back to the Niners when he gets his frequent flyer miles up. His Niner career is absolutely over. He knows the “Manning Decision.” He has to find himself a job.

    • Rich says:

My thougths exactly. He and Tom Condon know the answer to the Manning decision and that is why Smith is now getting active in finding a new job.

  5. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

AS is pissed about the Niners going after PM.

If Bob Padeky (a old good writer whose best days are behind him) was brought back in to “compete” or replace you (a young guy with a bright future) how would you feel?

  6. oneniner says:

…Really not worried about Alex. I dnt doubt his skills. He will make his money wherever he goes and culd win a championship with da right team. But niners are farked if we don’t get manning. Why would condon even encourage manning to sign wit us after dey dissed his other client.

We better get manning if Alex is gone!!!

  7. bayareafanatic says:

NFL.com says Alex’s actions show that Manning is going to choose SF and that is why he is no longer waiting it out. Interesting.
And now he is mad at the 49ers? Really? He should be mad at himself for playing so meek and finishing last in the league in 3rd down conversions year after year after year.
    Be well Alex…..

  8. PA says:

AS will be an “elite” backup qb for someone next season :)

  9. Jack Hammer says:

He knows he isn’t coming back and needs to find a job. Maybe his agent told him “THE DECISION.”

  10. Ceedub says:

Looks like Alex should have taken the $8 mil a year for 3 years the Niners originally offered. The tea leaves say the Alex Smith era in SF is over. Either way, Manning coming to SF or not I can’t see Alex signing with SF now. Too many burned bridges. My gut says PM signs with the Titans. He’d be home, and his wife is from Tennessee also, $$ talks. Hope I’m wrong. Not sure CK7 is ready for the big time.

  11. Brent says:

This could be really bad for SF. I doubt Manning signs with us and now we may lose out on Smith who I greatly prefer over Tebow, Hasslebeck, or Kaepernick. Even if Smith does come back is the relationship between he and Harbaugh damaged forever? Smith wouldn’t have caddied for him last month if he thought this was even a possibility. I’d love to get Manning but I’m a little disappointed in how the 49ers are behaving. Reports say they only offer the contract verbally, never in writing. Condon wants Manning in SF and screwed his other client.

    • AES says:

Brent, the only way Manning does not sign with us is if he chooses money over a possible Superbowl. He already has money, I’m sure at this stage in his career a crack at a Superbowl has to be very attractive. With the Titans and Denver, Manning has a small window at a SB, with the 49ers, he could conceivably win 1-2.
      Easy math…

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, the Pats made it to the SB with the 31st ranked defense last year. The titans just missed the playoffs. The NFL is now the conference with the most competition and superior teams. Plus, PM is familiar with the AFC. He loves playing against TBrady and would love to go head to head against ALuck. I’d say the titans are the favs but hey maybe the 9er FO ups the ante??

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *NFC conference*

      • oneniner says:

…if it wasn’t about money he would have stayed with the colts…….

    • Jallen says:

No room for wussies here…this is a business and you have to know the FO knows what they are doing. Everything will work out how it is suppose to in the end, just sit back and wait for the season. This team is doing everything right.

  12. AES says:

It’s beginning to look like Alex may very well join the P.Carroll “I hate Harbaugh” bumper sticker club for a chance to get back at the 49ers.

Wow, so many layers and scenarios are being played before our eyes. As I mentioned earlier, PC will roll out the red carpet for Alex in Seattle.
I would think that Alex is to smart to be PC’ ‘pawn’ but if Alex is hurt and upset with the 49ers he may sign a pack with the devil (PC).

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, it’s intriguing and fascinating this cat an mouse game. ehh?

    • Ceedub says:

If Flynn goes to Miami, the Seahawks will undoubtedly make a run for Alex. They will offer him more than $8 mil for 3 years. Looks like Alex joins the anti-Harbaugh crowd up in the Pacific Northwest. This is going to get interesting.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @AES

The best reason for PM to join the Titans is for him to beat the crap out of the Colts.

Both the Niners and Broncos went to the playoffs. Yet the Titans seem the most likely to land him.

Revenge is a big factor. Ask Marcus Allen and the Raiders.

      • AES says:

DS, there is no honor in beating the Colts these days. It is tantamount to a Ferrari beating a Toyota Tercel, no glory at all.

Do the math DS, does Manning want to beat the Colts vs. win a Superbowl?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @AES

Whose to say the Titans can’t make the playoffs?

As you said, the Colts suck. Houston histrically blows things, and now PM no longer has to worfy about that DL (forgot his name right now).

        The Jags suck.

Compare that to the Cards, Seattle who were pretty good the last half of the season. Both with QB’s nowhere near as good as AS.

Add to that the NFC is tougher and PM has said he prefers AFC anyway, and where does that leave the Niners?

  13. AHHHH says:

hes doin nothin but coverin his ass. u think if peyton doesnt come here he wont take the offer? come on alex wants a ring too an hel take it betrayed or not

  14. Bar None says:

When I read some of the blogs and comments on FA contracts this week, it has me query if this is the first time some here have followed NFL FA in detail. The stated amount and years in a contract means virtually nothing; it’s all about the guaranteed number.

  15. NickRow says:

The 7 year chapter in the Niner History book is finally coming to a close. Time to move on. Whether its PM, CK, JJ, Hasselbeck, Garrard, etc. bring it on. At least we won’t be pissing away a golden opportunity at a Super Bowl. We have a 2 year window with our D, Special Teams, etc. and better take advantage of it.

    • Adam says:

You better hope it’s Manning, the rest of the guys on your list and $6 will get you Starbucks and not much else.

  16. Hoferfan67 says:

Now it looks as though AS has *many* options when some on here thought he would be the doormat. Hmm…

    • BigP says:

He has the option of being everyone’s third and fourth option.

    • Adam says:

Yeah, don’t overlook Cleveland. Something weird is going on there.

The interesting thing is, the “experts” are saying that some serious damage control will have to be done at all three teams in this Manningpalooza if they miss out on the get.

Probably worse at Tennessee and Denver because those QBs would actually be pushed out. If they don’t get Manning they have to go crawling back and make nice. Slimy bastards.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AS could turn out to be the big winner in this FA circus. Not a bad thing for him to move on…

      • Adam says:

I would move on if I was him. How much humiliation can one guy take. This organization is obviously not a class act, or isn’t what it pretends to be (although, what employer is, really?)

Why would he stay? He had a very good 2011 but the problem is going to be like LaCanfora just stated there aren’t many spots left at the table. Too bad he didn’t know about this earlier. Looks like a reporter in Denver broke this awhile back that the Niners were the hidden/secret team in the mix.

Sounds slimy to me, I’d move on if I was him (and with a different agent. That dude just ooozes scumball just looking at him.)

      • BigP says:

The Niner’s aren’t a class act because they offered him a contract commiserate with his level of play? Give me a break. He was free to sign it, just like he is free to sign whatever lucrative FA offer teams present to him. Talk about having an agenda.

      • Adam says:

“The Niner’s aren’t a class act because they offered him a contract commiserate with his level of play?”

I was talking about the totality of his career here and if you’re reading the news, the way they went about this is kinda slimy – whether it’s the agent or the org or whatever it’s not really looking very upright to me.

      • BigP says:

They offered him a contract. He thought he was worth more than that. Smith said he was happy about the three year deal, but he really wasn’t. He wasn’t being honest with the press, I don’t think that makes him slimy.

    • AES says:

      Glad to hear that Hofe.
I do want him to land on his feet after all the dust settles. And I hope he finds success with whomever he signs with.

  17. Hov says:

Lmao grant, you call this news sum guy name Alex smith visting the seachickens who is this Alex smith guy?

  18. Sean in Canada says:

There is NO way the Niners have a better shot at a super bowl appearance with David Garrard than with Alex Smith. If you don’t like Smith fine, but that statement is just ridiculous.

Grant, any comments coming from the guys on the team? Gore, Davis and Staley were huge supporters of Alex.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Yes, three quotes from Gore, via associated press (Janie McCauley):
Gore on Manning pursuit, Alex Smith visit to Dolphins: “It’s crazy. I’m going to sit back and let them do their job.”
Gore on Peyton Manning: “He’s a Hall of Famer, first ballot, that’s all I got to say. He’s one of the best ever to play the game.”
More Frank Gore: “I know coach Harbaugh and Trent Baalke feel good about what they’re doing. They know what they’re doing.”

    • Ceedub says:

Garrard is washed up, not sure he is even backup material at age 34 and damaged goods as well. CK7 and Tolzein are better options. Tolzein intrigues me. He threw very well in the pre-season last year, better than CK7.

  19. Josh O'Brien says:

Manning has told the 49ers that they are out of the mix for his services as quarterback. The 49ers are now in a panic mode and Jed York is furious with Baalke and Harbargh that they allowed this to happen….really a team that almost got to the super bowl and now they are going to be without a quarterback going in the draft. Give a big F to the incompetent 49er management!

  20. Foo says:

    @grant

I think you may have gotten this one wrong.

Smith was OK with the 3 years and OK with the pay, but I think the issue is that there was a clause that made it easy for the 9ers to move him aside and Smith wasn’t comfortable with that. He could tell that something wasn’t right.

I’m behind Smith 100% on this one.

  21. Stan says:

I can hardly wait until KNBR starts ripping Smith as an “ingrate”, “No talent” “Loser”..ya know-the Matt Cain,Anthony Randolph P.R. run through mud they do so well. On orders from headquarters.

  22. Matt49erFan831 says:

And where did this bit of news that Manning said no to the Niners come from?

  23. Rowdy says:

Alex’s family told him to leave the 49ers after the 2010 season. The Manning courtship represents the proverbial straw. Goodbye Alex. Welcome…………..Josh Johnson.

    • Ceedub says:

Johnson or Hasselbeck. Camp will determine who starts between the veteran, CK7 and Tolzein (assuming PM goes to Denver or Tenn).

  24. Mbniner says:

grant, do they pay you for this? If so, good for you.

Seems to me he SRPD Could hire a monkey to regurgitate Lowell Cohn, matt barrows, and matt maiocco.

You have any thoughts or insights of your own?

Do you really need a degree for this?

  25. manifest says:

I pray that AS moves on, and we can finally unite as 49er fans again. No blog is fun nowadays with the constant war between the pro’s and againsts….. so tired of the bickering, and it won’t stop till he’s gone.

harbaugh made a silk purse out of a sow’s ear with smith, imo, and if he can make smith be on the edges of a pro-bowl, he can do it with a lot of other quarterbacks. I’m not worried if we lose both AS and PM at all. We have Harbaugh, and that is why we were successful last year, and will be going forward.

smith will get miserable offers anywhere else he goes, for obvious reasons, so I expect him back here, and the torture will continue. Please God let him go.

    • Sean in Canada says:

manifest, as long as there are 2 QBs on a roster there will be bickering. The most popular player on most teams for some is the backup quarterback.

  26. David says:

A lot of these niners fans sound like idiots! The 49ers offered smith a 3 year contract for 24 million in December , is it their fault he chose to sit on it 4 months? Should they up it for him on 1 ok season , yes ok season , our D got us most of the way , well I’m sure Harbaugh has a plan if they don’t get manning , and how loyal was Smith letting himself be taken off the roster when hitting free agency?

    • Ceedub says:

The plan is to roll with CK7 or Tolzein and to bring in a vet to compete for the starting job. This must be their worst case scenario if PM opts for pastures other than SF.

    • 49erGirl says:

Just like all the excuses they had for him on the field…it’s his agent’s fault, it’s Harbaugh’s fault, it’s Baalke’s fault, it’s Manning’s fault….it’s never Alex’s fault.

  27. Sukhi711 says:

Boy, this turnning into a mess, if Manning goes somewhere else and Alex tells 9ers, thanks but no thanks. 9ers will become an average team without proven QB.

    • msclemons67 says:

The 49ers didn’t have a proven QB at the beginning of last season either.

Harbaugh managed to make Smith look competent. I’m sure he’ll do fine with Kaep or Tolzien or whoever.

  28. niner says:

He’s upset because he was ONLY offered 8 million dollars after getting first pick salary and playing like an undrafted nobody for 7 years. He has one good season on a team that has more pro bowlers than Monatna or Young, and he thinks he’s in Brady or PM league? He could nto get one 3rd down in the 4th quarter to keep the Giants off the field in the nfc championship. Good grief go play with Kentwan balmer, Mrob on scottys miserable team and see if you win 13 games! ? What a joke!!!!!

  29. msclemons67 says:

I wonder what Matt Moore is thinking right now? He had a fairly decent season last year and by the end of the season was looking pretty good.

So the Dolphins talk to Manning: “Ok, I get it, Manning is a HOF player, I can understand”

Then Flynn: “Well this is sort of irritating but I guess I get it. Flynn’s the hot name for some reason”

Now Alex Smith: “WTF?!? Seriously? ALEX SMITH?!? Screw you guys”

  30. Crab15 says:

Alex Smith will be playing at “the stick” after all next year!
We have home games with both Seattle and Miami!

  31. WilzPT says:

I normally don’t comment, but this time I feel I must. Grant I really enjoy reading your column (even if occasionally I disagree). Good for Alex Smith. I’ve been a supporter since he was drafted. Even when I was disappointed in his performance(s) he always displayed a toughness and tenacity I admire. I also think his loyalty is admirable. First and foremost I’m a 49er fan. If we get Manning Great! I just want to see us win super bowls. Having said that I think the 49ers (Harbaugh) have treated A Smith poorly. I know it’s a business, but we shouldn’t have said publicly that he is elite and the he’s our QB “for the foreseeable” future of we weren’t going to offer him a contract reflective of those comments. Again I know it’s a business, but does that mean integrity goes out the window. What kind of message does that send the players and the numerous impressionable young 49ers fans. “it’s a business” shouldn’t be an excuse to do business without integrity.

    • barleyfreak says:

… shouldn’t have said publicly that he is elite and the he’s our QB “for the foreseeable” future

      What’s he supposed to say?

“Yeah, well Alex Smith is, you know, hmm, uh, pretty mediocre really. Yeah and uh, it’s hard seeing him continue as our quarterback here, I gotta say.”

  32. 7x7er says:

Would be sad to see Alex go if Peyton doesn’t doesn’t come, but maybe best for all. Alex may do better, playing angry, with something to prove. Maybe for the 49ers and the fans it would be better to get past the Alex era. He is a polarizing figure, with some feeling he never got the right support and others judging him on solely his performance to date. If the team loses both, i am sure the pundits will call it a disaster, but at least CK gets to start with low expectations and who know maybe he surprises. Last year’s pure rookies did pretty well.

  33. Brodie2Washington says:

Does taking the risk of courting Manning show Harbaugh has confidence in Kaepernick’s development? Besides Manning and Smith, the other options:

Kaepernick: A Drukenmiller with much better athleticism, or will he learn the footwork, coverage reads and touch passes?

Tolzien: A rubber armed backup, or will his accuracy, footwork and natural WCO savy (not that the Niners actually play WCO) overcome that?

Was Harbaugh waiting on Josh Johnson all along?

    • Ceedub says:

I think Harbaugh had to pull out all the stops in order to get Alex to perform at a higher level last year. CK7 is a developmental project of Harbaugh’s. I think when PM contacted the Niners, with Alex holding out, the front office decided it was worth the risk to pursue PM. I think they have been prepared to lose Alex if it doesn’t work out. CK7 may or may not be ready, but the Alex Smith era appears to be over.

    • 49erGirl says:

Drunkenmiller was an idiot (misspelled on purpose…). Kaepernick is extremely intelligent…no comparison between the two.

Kaepernick will do just fine when given the opportunity.

      • Latino Heat says:

Even though he is coming out of college with a gimicky offense? I mean he did not look comfortable at all last year and if he is thrust in the starting lineup, he could struggle with the personaliies they have added and currently have. Remeber Gore, Davis, and Delanie were huge Smith supporters, you could have a lockeroom divided.

  34. TIM_ says:

Most any qb could throw 1 td a game and 150-175 yards and a bad 3rd fown conversion. Replacing Alex is easy, improving on him is a little harder but not really.

    • waterman says:

Tim are you in the “i think Matt H will do” camp if we don’t get PM? Who are we going to get this year if we loose both?

    • Adam says:

Sure you can if actually have receivers on the team.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Tim, you know third down conversion is a offensive TEAM stat, right? Not on AS when the line can’t get a push for one yard. He gets some of the blame but he’s not the sole reason.

  35. Brodie2Washington says:

Whether an “Alex Smith Hater” or “Alex Smith Apologist”, Alex has been a straightforward, class act his whole career. He deserves transparent communication (especially from his agent).

  36. TIM_ says:

…But I stll think Alex might be our statter, so I am not counting my chickens.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, this was the proverbial straw. It is time for him to move on. I just hope CK is starting in 2013.

    • 49erGirl says:

Haven’t we had enough back and forth about Alex’s “statter”s? lol!

  37. PhD says:

To the tune of ‘Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow”

Oh the Free Agency Period is Frightful
But to me it’s so delightful
and if Smith decides it’s so,
Let him go, let him go, let him go…

And even if we don’t get Peyton
The front office will bring home the bacon
and if Smith decides to go,
No worries here, I say so, I say so

  38. Matt49erFan831 says:

This whole situation is turning into a clusterf***….and I have to agree that maybe its best if Alex Smith takes a walk…this whole “Smithers” vs the anti-Smithers is getting old…it needs to be about the TEAM again…

    • Adam says:

Good luck with that, there have always been fairweather and bandwagon fans. Granted, it is worse now. Some people can’t help themselves.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

The blamers seldom had anything of substance to add other than regurgitate AS’s weakness which we all knew and ignored because he was one of 53. Don’t count on anything novel from them once AS is gone!

      • Adam says:

The only thing novel will be the steadfast defense of whoever replaces him.

Had they had their way, McNabb, Orton, or God knows who else would have been here last year and they’d have backed that disaster until the end.

So I see that coming. There will have to be a defense of ego. It’s gonna get super stupid. Whoever the new guy is will walk on water with that crowd.

On the flipside the other nuts will be on Manning or whoever it is 24/7. It will just be a role reversal. Jordy and his sycophants the lovers and the others will be the haters and the rest of us get to throw up a little in our mouths all season long. Yay.

      • Crab15 says:

Hofe – This is a rare opportunity to get a super star QB. If Tom Brady was interested in being a Niner, the same frenzy would be happening in here.
I didn’t blame Alex for losing to the Giants.
The main reason we lost the game was because of that moron ref that blew that Bradshaw fumble! That ref should’ve been handcuffed and flown by helicopter directly to Roger Goodell’s office! There should’ve been a major uproar from the Niner organization and there wasn’t! Harbaugh made a few comments but that’s about it. Where was Jed York???
Other reasons we lost, Kyle Williams two choke jobs caused by Ted Ginn’s refusal to play with pain and Carlos Rogers surprisingly getting burned all over the field! Our receivers played poorly (especially Crabtree) and Alex was terrible at the end of the game but he had a good overall season.
Peyton Manning needs the 49ers and the 49ers need him. Like I said before, Harbaugh has the Mojo going! We should support him.

      • jgwindsor says:

AS did start the game well with 2 TD passes to the his one and only target just to round out the argument

  39. TIM_ says:

Yep waterman, mh would be better than alex imho and he might be worse than Kaep but better than alex.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

BTW, Tim what will you comment on once AS is with the hawks? Will we see less of you? Will you still visit?

  40. waterman says:

People go look at Matt H stats. Last good year was in 2007. Last season 18TD to 14int? No thanks. Last year I would have said hell ya but not now.

  41. waterman says:

@Tim smart phone? So sign Matt and start CK? Interesting to me.

  42. Hedges says:

Time for the 49ers to make a call to Flynn’s agent.

  43. Chargerfan says:

This is getting fun. Who knows what Manning really wants? If Tennessee is offering partial ownership along with a solid O-line, he may be using the 49ers to leverage a better deal with them. Despite the euphoria of 49er partisans, the receiver corp here is well beneath what Manning had with Indy. Manningham was clearly only the Giants third best receiver, Moss was out of football last year (and was a mixed blessing in the last years he did play) and Crabtree is still a huge disappointment measured against original expectations. Only Davis is first rate among the targets.

Meanwhile if Manning does not choose the 49ers, Carroll and the Seahawks have a chance to strengthen themselves and weaken the 49ers with one move. And Smith gets out of the hell in San Francisco that any rational player would have fled years ago. Let someone else assume the burden of a hopelessly jaded fan base. He gets the freedom to start over without inflated expectations or the now shed “bust” label.

The 49er offense was deceptively effective last year. They protected the ball and used great kicking for points and field position. Smith played every game and turned the ball over seven times despite taking some crushing hits. The over under for his non-Manning replacement to hit that number is somewhere between three and four games. How will that affect a team playing a first place schedule? Are you ready to be a wildcard?

Kaep is not a god and based on his play last season is not ready to reliably start yet. Tolzien was valued less than the more expensive Volek by the QB expert Norv Turner last year so I don’t see him as a savior either. Hasselbeck is done. The QB position may be about to be the 49er weakness again and soon.

    • Ceedub says:

      Johnson
      Kaepernick
      Tolzein

Your SF 49ers QB roster for 2012.

Harbaugh will again earn that $5 mil a year pay check.

  44. waterman says:

I think Grant has stated his feeling that CK still needs to learn to put some touch on his passes. He drills them hard big arm. I’m not trying to speak for Grant.

  45. Prime Time says:

You moronic haters better hope Manning is signed sealed and delievered cause if they lose both Manning and Smith and go with someone with no starting NFL experience like JJ, Kap, Tolzien, you guys will witness a hate unleashed like never seen before ala Bayarea and 23clown!

    • 23jordan says:

      CRAB Prime,

Will you leave this blog if we get Manning? Oh you cant, youre on the team. Are you hurt? Alex is Gone!!!!

    • 49erGirl says:

I trust Harbaugh and Baalke – they will be prepared no matter what the outcome. No need to panic.

    • Ceedub says:

If the front office gambles and loses, so be it. I like the fact that they tried to bring in one of the greatest QB’s of our era. If we lose Smith, we lose Smith. They made him a reasonable offer IMHO. No hate will be coming from me.

      • 23jordan says:

        Ceedub,

No worries, we’re a lock. Manning chooses those other 2 losing teams, he doesn’t want more super bowls. Manning is a Niner tomorrow! Book it.

    • 23jordan says:

      Prime,

      You got that Smith contract?

    • Adam says:

      “witness a hate unleashed”

That was my favorite Jordasm of all time!!! That was awesome.

How’d that go again? “You’ll witness… something something blah blah blah like you’ve never seen before.” Total Charlton Heston / Moses drama. Haha.

God I hadn’t laughed that hard in a while and I think I was drinking something when I was reading that – went up my nose.

Damn!! Good times. Kinda glad Jordy is sticking around.

      Miles of smiles. :)

      • 23jordan says:

        Adam,

That was my favorite as well. I’m good at what I do. In the famous words of T.O. “I love me some me!” What a 2 moth offseason it’s been. Almost better than the real season. Adam, I knew we’d have to find a new QB.

Do you think the offer to Smith was fair? I do, I really do. If he can’t get it anywhere else, he doesn’t deserve it here right?

      • Adam says:

We don’t know any details yet about that do we? Do we know how the “agent” presented this, do we know what the “agent” advised Smith to do?

All we know is that in an interview with a TV reporter some days ago, Smith was asked about it. He said the reports about not being happy with it were completely false and that he was happy with it and ready to sign it. Or work toward signing it or whatever.

You tell me what’s going on.

I have nothing against Manning, it’s a good move if he has anything left.

What I object to is that this looks like it was not handled in the right way. Smith did everything Harbaugh asked him to do, short pass games and long yard games (Saints playoff was what you all wanted with a 300-yard game.)

He got them to the doorstep. So whatever you think of Smith is irrelevant, he did what he was supposed to do and deserves to be treated with respect. They can move on, not a problem, just have the decency to be talking to him about it, don’t play these little stealth spy dramas.

If the FO and his agent are playing games, that’s unfortunate and makes the organization look slimy. All there is to it.

  46. Brodie2Washington says:

This reminds me of the “Great Nnamdi Wait”of last season. We never did get Nnamdi but it seemed to turn out well. The team that got Nnamdi did not have the best season.

If Manning signs somewhere else, I think there is still a reasobnable shot Alex Smith returns.

  47. TIM_ says:

Why so harsh Hof,after i have been so kind to uou today in your hour of grief :). To answer your question I will not change a thing,I will be a team girst guy and not a one player lover like some few.

  48. J49ers90 says:

Cant wait to see the right side of the Oline Fall apart nd see Manning go down nd break his neck…. Bring Alex Back.. Manning is Damaged Goods

  49. Prime Time says:

@23clown, you seem pretty confident it’s a done deal, you wanna wager Manning signs in TEN? I will never leave this blog becuse whatever QB we get I will be unleashing a hate on every incompletion, INT, an every decision this QB makes just like you and Gayarea did the past year, just letting you know what a hater would do to a fan that supports the 49ers!

    • Ceedub says:

Jeez dude, you sound like a 12 year old adolescent. Let it go.

    • 23jordan says:

You’re hurt your idol is gone. Elite Alex has broken many a heary on this blog. You’ll have to get in line behind Onedolphin, Alexfan11, BS, and many others. How does it feel, I mean the pain. I’ll give you a bit of advice. It only hurts whan you touch it! Just breathe slowly!Bwahahahahaha!

    • Neal says:

      @Prime gay basher time,

Grant , take this bozo off the blog, it is one thing to discuss football and another to be a gay hater. yea Mr. Smith goes to Washington.

      • Adam says:

You and Jordy make comments just as nasty. He gonna take you off too?

        Hypocrite much?

      • 23jordan says:

        Neal,

No banning, No SNITCHING!! Leave that garbage to DS. Prime is harmless. He’s hurt. He’s a big Smither. He’s on suicide watch. Please don’t tempt him. He’s hurting really bad. Let him rest.

      • Neal says:

        @Jordan,

That is just my liberal social views kicking in, and not necessary to go there, hey Adam, do you have a man crush on me, are you stalking me, you don’t have anything to say, do you want to follow me on twitter big guy.

  50. east coast niner fan says:

has anyone taken to account that are offense will be totally different with manning. a staple of are offense was a mobile QB( a smith run N.O game) bootlegs things like that.Manning not so much and 4 neck surgeries and are O-line some how if this happens.i dont see it ending well for manning anyone remember that ravens game last year that was terrible. manning proly be crippled. I just have bad feeling bout this

  51. 49or69 all the time says:

All I can say is this could either be the best or worst move that Harbs and Baalke make in their young NFL FO careers. Harbs took a huge risk with AS last year and it paid off. Looks like their comfortable taking another huge risk on Manning, who even though he’s throwing the ball in shorts, no one will really know of he’s healthy until week 6 of the regular season after he’s faced the likes of some of the formidable pass rushers in the league, such as M Williams, N Suh, AZ, Seattle and Gregg Williams D twice each. We’re all in on this one and have an even bigger target on our backs than we did in the 80′s and early 90′s. I stand behind my team, but I for one would’ve felt better just bringing back the same team we had last year with an upgrade on the O-line and WR position. But hey, what do I know, I’m just a fan. Oh, and also, we still don’t know what the outcome of The Decision 2.0 will be!! Hope it works. Go Niners!!

    • 23jordan says:

I think Manning does better than Smith with those pass rushers you mentioned coming at him.

    • Latino Heat says:

Its a huge risk not only with all circumstances Manning related, but more importantly, the lockeroom that Harbaugh said so many things to and now has gone back on his word. He said a lot of things that led us to believe that Alex Smith was elite, the well documented starter, and his guy. Well the front office obviously does not share this sentiment with a low ball offer and an agenda to move quickly away from Smith and into the Manning sweepstakes.
Harbaugh needs to address the media and put this out to the fanbase as to what their doing.

      • Medic One says:

I echoed your thoughts below because in my anxiousness to contribute, I didn’t take the time to read the posts ahead of mine.
I agree with you that Harbaugh would completely undermine his credibility it they let Smith go. I believe Smith has been in on the whole situation from day one, there have been no surprises, and that the whole Manning “interest” is a charade to make the other three teams in the NFC west show their hands.
Great thoughts! Thank you for sharing and I wanted to make sure I gave you credit.

  52. TIM_ says:

As long as we have Jed and Baalke and paarag and jh and staff we will be a competitive team. For goodness sakes they even did well last season with a poor qb.

  53. big biner says:

Alex would be dumb to go to Seattle. He would have to go against this monster defense twice a year and play in that slop…..I don’t think so. Miami will and should be his next stop. You don’t think our D would know how to abuse the ish out of him?

    • 23jordan says:

We saw last year in the NFC championship game how much Alex Looooves throwing in the rain. That wet ball suits him just fine.

  54. Gene18 says:

I’m the old Gene18 poster from 49ersParadise years ago. Many of the old time web Niner Fans might remember me. I love all the possible plays with this so I had to jump into Matt’s follower talk. Imagine that McHar purposely jumped into just to assure Kolb got his bonus. That keeps him out of AZ. Imagine that once it leaked they used it. It gives Alex a chance to spy on Seattle in the guise of a “Free Agent”. Imagine McHar low ball Peyton with the lure of jewelry think they won’t get him but just assured the Kolb bonus and Seattle spy trip. Imagine Peyton takes the lowball/jewelry route. Anyway I see this McHar wins. Brilliant!!!

  55. MontanaMan16 says:

Grant, Any news on the details of the Manningham contract yet?

  56. Prime Time says:

@meal why so sensitive, did I hit a nerve? And 23 clown, I’ll be here forever and it won hurt til we see Manning go down an never get back up and we bring in Kap to lead us to a 4-12 season and see the sea chickens win the NFC West. That’s when I will be saying buwhahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!

    • 23jordan says:

      Prime,

Myself, Bay, Md and 49ergirl always told the Smithers that they were Alex Smith fans, not Niner fans. You are proving that with your comments. Alex will need a new number in Seattle. #11 is taken. However, you can still get a #11 seahawk jersey. Good luck finding it. It’s hard to get those 2nd stringers jerseys made by the team. You can always ask Alex to send you one.

I feel bad for you son. Don’t you go hurting yourself. That’s why I put you on suicide watch. I’m worried about you. Don’t break your computer! Meanwhile, the dolphins offered Alex the backup job for a year at $3 million. Should he take it?? How do you like the dolphins colors!

      Bwahahahahahahahahahah!!!

      • Neal says:

@PRIME GAY BASHER YOUR OPINION IS NOT WORTH A DIME. You and your Smither fan club just confirmed that you are AS lovers over Niner fans. That is pretty sad.

  57. Medic One says:

I think that the 49ers are in the prime position of being able to lure Smith back if it really came to that or convincing Manning this is the place to play for a ring and here is how I came to that decision.
The 49ers aren’t going to offer Manning any more time than they did Smith. They might even only offer him a 2 year deal where he has the option to play for the third. This is beneficial because they can tell Alex that they didn’t make a longer offer to an “outsider” with a proven track record.
Secondly, they’ve signed Moss and Manningham. I don’t believe there is a QB in the league who wouldn’t be excited to throw to Davis, Crabtree, Moss, and Manningham. This is going to be a stat player’s dream. They can say they signed in hopes of making Smith/Manning happy.
Finally, the common agent excuse. Simply put, Smith and Condon did SF a favor last season by coming back for less money on a 1 year deal. They used Condon to help Manning get more money elsewhere as payback for last year. They also used the situation to make Az sign Cobb, Seattle, STL make a trade out of the number 2 spot, and all three teams had to show their hands to SF.
So I believe that Smith would come back if Manning doesn’t sign. It might cost SF an extra year, or maybe they are all in on the charade.

    • Gene18 says:

Agree – Smith will be back if Peyton’s not a 49er.

    • Medic One says:

I have been up the last 24 hours working. I’d like to paraphrase in more simple terms.
I don’t see Harbaugh trashing his credibility and name for Manning. He supported Smith all off season. He runs an offense that you could plug Bob in from behind the checkstand of Safeway and it is going to function.
I can’t imagine how the locker room would react to Smith being undercut like this by their leader.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

I agree too, he’d be a bigger idiot than Manning for not signing. But if we lose them both, We draft Kirk Cousins and a new era begins. We may draft him anyway! Next year we trade CK for a 1st rounder and life is good. Way better scenario than MH or DG

    • 23jordan says:

I would be willing to bet you that Smith wont come back but it wont matter. We will never know. Manning will be a Niner.

    • Wilson says:

I agree that if Peyton goes elsewhere, Alex will be back here. Surely he doesn’t want to start over with yet another new offensive coordinator. He won’t have quite the same level of trust as he would have, but his SF experience has given him the thickest skin in the business. And if Harbaugh has been straight with him, that relationship may still be okay. Alex knows that had Peyton not become a free agent, he – Alex – would have been the 49ers’ quarterback, and any team that didn’t look at the possibility of signing maybe the best QB of all time would have been derelict in its duty to the fans. Still, I can imagine how painful this must be for him, and I feel bad that this situation has happened.

I’m almost 50/50 on how I want this to go. Peyton is high risk, high reward. Alex is low risk, medium reward.

  58. TIM_ says:

    Gene18 !!!
Great to see one of the old Paradise Family !

  59. TIM_ says:

As much as I like Alex personally,as a person, not as a qb on MY team, if all manning has done is to have alex finally move on and let the team move on from him, then PM has done us all a great service, even if he signs elsewhere.

  60. TIM_ says:

Kaep would be worlds better than Alex his first year and most likely better than Alex last year in many ways…with a huge upside as he learns.

  61. bayareafanatic says:

QB insight. Watch the videos of Manning how he scans the field and how quickly he gets rid of the ball. Two seconds and out. I doubt he’ll be sacked even 20 times behind the same line as Alex.
I pray to the NFL gods that we land this cat…

  62. est_29Jan94 says:

if manning doesnt sign i hope we do whatever it takes to get alex smith back. also why are alot of you so high on josh johnson what has he done to warrant a starting job in the league let alone one on a potential super bowl contending team? commenters talk about him as if he is a hidden gem and only the 49ers now of him. if he was so talented some team would have come knocking at the bucs door by now. it has happened with favre, matt schuab, matt hasselback and our own steve young.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Why are you so high on such low production? Last in yardage, last in scoring for a starter that played all 16 games IN THE ENTIRE NFL. Oh and 29th in 3rd down conversions. Never finished higher than that his entire career.
So ask yourself why are you so high on that? See real football fans see that type of production and it leads them to yell for CARR, JJ, CK, Troy Smith or anyone else. And before you argue with me, realize that management agrees with what I just said. This is why he was offered such low money for so few years and it is why they are chasing another QB even though he is old and at the end of his career. FACT…

      • est_29Jan94 says:

i couldnt care less about those regular seasons stats. we made the playoffs with what we had. we are already better as a team through free agency we will get even better thru the draft and from the continuity of having the same system. if we cant get manning bring alex back. everyone on the team will be better INCLUDING alex if he is our starting qb. bring whom ever else to compete with alex and let the creme rise to the top. it sounds like you want anyone besided AS, so i know this is falling on deaf hears and blind eyes. if you want jj, tolzien, kaep or whoever else to start go be the GM in a franchise of madden’12!!!

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Ownership doesn’t agree with you. They have parted way. Damage is done.
The only way Alex comes back is if you buy Madden 2012 and put him back on the team yourself.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Well put about Josh Johnson. Perhaps the same folks who lobbied for Nate Davis, the next one, who couldn’t get off the practice squad and now can’t get on one.

      • 23jordan says:

        Sean’

Johnson refused an extension with Tampa because he wants a chance to compete for a starting job somewhere. He has plenty of time. Teams have QB’s and some of them have bad QB’S. He will find work just like Smith will. Even if it is as a abackup.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Jordan, you just seem really high on a guy who has 5 career starts and has 5 tds and 10 interceptions. Not trying to pick a fight, I just don’t see what you see in him, that’s all.

    • 23jordan says:

      Est,

Since you don’t know why, I’ll tell you. The Niners wanted to trade for Josh johnson last year and inquired with Tampa last year. Tampa wasn’t interested in trding Johnson to ANYONE. Tampa thought they were a playoff team and felt they needed a backup in case Josh freeman went down. Johnson played in JH system in San Diego. It’s only college football but Johnson’s numbers in his senior year were like 43 touchdowns and 1 interception. Josh Johnson knows this offense. JJ wont make it here, Manning will be a Niner tomorrow.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Josh Johnson is a free agent and if he was anything special, someone with a qb issue would give him a shot.

      • est_29Jan94 says:

franchise qbs dont grow on trees so if josh johnson was all that you proclaim him to be a team would have pulled a redskins and gave up everything to have him.

  63. TIM_ says:

Like I have always said, alex would make a fine backup for us.But I would hate to lose Tolzien. For alex’s sake he should leave since he is not in the long term plans of the niners, that much is clear even to the so called smithers.

  64. Brodie2Washington says:

I would be tickled to see Manning on the 49ers, but I just can’t seem to visualize how it would work.

Harbaugh-Roman employed a run/pass balanced, multiple TE power offense designed to chew clock, limit turnovers and augment the defense. This was the system in both Stanford and the 49ers.

Manning ran his own personalized version of the shotgun “chuck and duck” multi receiver offense. Manning was so masterful, the OC was an afterthought. Most runs were draw plays.

So if Manning signs, which offensive system do they play? Some say a combination of both, but how would that work?

The unfamiliar offense and lower contract amount (compared to the Broncos and Titans) are reason’s why Manning might not sign here.

    • Sean in Canada says:

I also believe Gore isn’t fond of running from the shotgun, if I remember correctly.

Harbaugh’s first press conferance after the dust has settled should be interesting. The first 10 questions will pertain to Alex Smith.

  65. TIM_ says:

    Brodie:
PM said he doesnt need to bring his old offense with him and he welcomes change.

  66. Bar None says:

“@AdamSchefter: Filed to ESPN: Matt Flynn has agreed to terms witj Seattle on a 3-yr contract worth up to $26M w/$10M guaranteed.”

  67. 23jordan says:

No need for Smith to fly to Seattle. Flynn just signed with the Seahawks for 3 years 26 million. Only $10 MIL guarenteed. Smith better hammer one out in Miami.

    • Bayareafanatic says:

Bad for us. Seahawks just got better. Smith is running out of options. Just like his playing style he is too late to pull the trigger.

      • 23jordan says:

        Bay,

Wouldn’t pull the trigger on the Niner deal either. I’m startig to come to the fact that Smith just does not have a trigger. He in constantly in need of someone else pulling it for him.

Trigger= Confidence in yourself and your decisions.

  68. EdgeOFChaos17 says:

    Seahawks sign matt flynn

  69. Bar None says:

Last season, Arizona gave Kolb 5 years $63 mill with 21 guaranteed. Flynn was signed for half that amount; could be Whisenhunt’s undoing in AZ.

  70. DS94everXev says:

    Flynn signs with Seattle.

Looks at least for now that we won’t have to worry about AS pulling a Marcus Allen on us.

    • 49erGirl says:

Many of us weren’t worried. The Niners wouldn’t be scared to play Smith twice a year…they’d look forward to it!!!

  71. Rick Carroll says:

Alex Smith, blah blah blah. . Ive been a real true Niner fan since I was 7yrs old. Ive played fb for 1o plus. Anybody with any brains knows that a masterful coach can make any decent player shine. I was rooting for Smith, but 8million a year, he shouldve signed bein that we over paid the smuck for 6years. Any qb will do what Alex did if thats JHs plan. . His 3rd down percentage was horrible. He couldnt throw the damn deep ball and he couldnt toss wrs open. So what if he walks? I could b da next niner qb and do all thee above. If Manning signs, u all will b turning into Peyton lovers. If he dont, then i guess we went 14-4 because of Alex Smith. Im mad at him for not signin. I make 16,ooo a year. F@ck- Colin could do what we need. May take a bit, but his upside is better. Any qb will b better than AS. He was a number 1 draft pick. Look at Dalton, Newton, and all the others who had a better year than all of Alexs. U guys are whiners. With Moss, Manningham, Davis, Gore, shoot, ill throw em the ball for 3 million
