Free agency live blog

This is the official live blog for free agency. Please leave all your free agency comments here. I’ll keep you updated on the day’s events and I’ll answer any questions you may have.

I’m blogging from the Cohn Zohn. I’m sitting at the dining room table with my dad eating cheese and salami and listening to the Beach Boys. “I Get Around” is playing right now, and it’s much different than the 2pac version. but I like it nonetheless.

We do not play the Beatles in the Cohn Zohn, unless my mom is around. She’s out right now, so we don’t have to hear no “Eight Days a Week,” or anything corny like that. The Rolling Stones are up next – Beggars Banquet.

BULLETIN: 2 pm Pacific Time. Adam Schefter reports that Joshua Morgan is on the verge of signing with the Washington Redskins. If this goes through, the Niners have essentially traded Moss for Morgan. How do you feel about that?

Moss theoretically is what the Niners didn’t have and needed – a deep threat/red zone target. But he’s old and he’s got a problem personality. Morgan is young and likable. He’s a good No. 2 receiver, a great blocker and a great teammate.

They swapped an every down player for a selective down player. Do they really expect Moss to start? Or do they have to find a replacement for Morgan at flanker?

5:02 According to Matt Barrows, former Oakland Raider Chaz Schilens is scheduled to work out for 49ers.

Schilens (6-4, 225) is big and fast – he ran a 4.38 at his Combine in 2008. But he’s only played a full 16-game season once, back in ’08, and he’s never caught more than 29 catches in a season.

I’ve watched him play many times for the Raiders and I’ve always felt he has bad hands and poor ball skills. He’s similar to Darrius Heyward Bey when he tries to catch a jump ball down field, meaning he doesn’t even come close.

If the Niners sign Schilens, he’ll be Moss insurance, nothing more. He will not be a starter or a replacement for Josh Morgan.

It’s looking more and more like the Niners plan on starting Moss, which would be a very risky move, or they plan on picking a starter – Joshua Morgan’s replacement –  in the draft.

If they choose the draft route, Cal’s Marvin Jones would be a good pick – perhaps an eventual upgrade over Morgan. Jones is taller, quicker and faster than Morgan, plus he returns punts.

5:18 According to a league source, the Bills expect to sign Mario Williams AND Robert Meachem by tomorrow. That’s good and bad news for the Niners.

It’s good news because Mario Williams isn’t going to the Bears or the Seahawks or any NFC team, or any serious Super Bowl contender.

It’s also bad news because another wide receiver appears to be off the market. The Niners probably won’t be able to adequately replace Morgan in free agency, which puts a lot of pressure on their draft.

5:23 Now Vincent Jackson is off the market. He’s signing a five-year deal with the Buccaneers, according to Adam Schefter. No word yet on Mike Wallace.

5:59 Harry Douglas is re-signing with the Falcons, per his twitter. Another receiver off the market.

6:52 Reggie Wayne re-signs with the Colts on a three-year deal, according to Schefter.

9:19 The Bills may have expected to sign Robert Meachem earlier today, but they will do no such thing. The Chargers just announced they agreed to a four-year deal with Meachem.

BULLETIN: Brandon Lloyd will workout for the Niners Wednesday morning. He would be an upgrade at flanker over Joshua Morgan in 2012. He could also demand to be the Niners’ highest paid receiver. Lloyd (6-5, 192 lbs.) will be 31 next season. He caught 77 passes for a league-leaging 1,448 receiving yards and 11 TDs from Kyle Orton in 2010.

The Beatles are more than the “corn”, guys. Helter Skelter, Revolution, Glass Onion, etc.

    • Montana Joe says:

It’s too bad if the Niners lose Morgan but I’m hoping they take advantage of this free agency class to get a proven #1 receiver as we unfortunately already have a proven #2 receiver in Michael Crabtree. Let the Redskins over pay as they surely will for an unproven #2 coming off a knee surgery. Moss is proven, but also old so who know’s if he will even make the team? Has anyone heard any details about his contract and the amount of guaranteed salary? That’s the real issue here. If Moss is “on” and that’s the only way he’ll be on the field, then he will be way better then Morgan.
      Receiver Order:
      #1… (maybe Wallace, Jackson, ????)
      #2 Michael Crabtree.
      #3 Randy Moss.

Already looking a lot better the last year, right? Remember our receivers only had one catch in last years NFC Championship game :(

    • hightop says:

The Beatles, by far the best and most influential band of their time!

  2. Hoferfan67 says:

GC, to keep that theme of music, how about the Everly Brothers, “All I have to do is Dream”??!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Of course, I’m tying back into FA market musically. lol

    • Grant Cohn says:

The Cohn Zohn loves the Everly Brothers. I’m sitting here with my dad, he tells me Bill Walsh loved the Everly Brothers. Bill Walsh and he used to talk about the Everly Brothers when they weren’t talking about boxing.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, thanks for sharing that knowledge. They were before my time, but I’m into rock history and they top my list. Can’t be bad if liked by BW!

The Beatles studied the Everly Brothers harmony when they first stated out. Paid homage to them with “Cathy’s Clown”.

      • elGuapo says:

        No “Help” by the Beatles?!

      • Grant Cohn says:

Not my cup of tea, but I’m not hating. The Beatles sound saccharin to me most of the time.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Guap, yes we all need “Help”! lol

      • ribico says:

No love for the Beatles! Har-rumph!

Run this by your dad, Grant – The early Beatles were essentially the Everly Brothers with Chet Atkins guitar riffs.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Rib, yes with a bit of Buddy Holly as well!

      • Stan says:

When I was a kid-near tyke,a local kids show played “Wake up little Suzy, wake up” every morning. I cant remember what show it was.

      • Stan says:

NO wait-maybe it wasnt just a local kids show..so long ago …It had a Cowboy type host.
And all that singing about lying to ma and pa sounded so naughty to little me going to first grade Catholic school!

      • mavin 1 says:

The 9ers should adopt Stan Kenton’s How High The Moon before the games. All you youngsters missed some the worlds great music. Elington, Basie, Shorty Rogers and Stan Getz, and Spike Jones was entertaining also. There seems to be a generation gap here.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

The Everly brothers joined the Marines and I remember seeing them on tv performing in uniform. They would get into fist fights backstage before concerts.

    • bbthekitty says:

ribico says: Run this by your dad, Grant – The early Beatles were essentially the Everly Brothers with Chet Atkins guitar riffs.

Not Chet Atkins, oh youthful one, Carl Perkins. George Harrison was a Carl Perkins FREAK! Why do you think they covered so many Carl Perkins tunes early on?

You children don’t know anything – about music OR football.

      • hightop says:

“Took some honey from a bee dressed it up an called it me” …did you see George on the Carl tribute before he died( with Clapton and Dave Edmunds -George combed his hair back… nice -God rest em’ both).Grant if you think the Beatles sound overly sweet -check out the Everly’s “Songs our Daddy Taught Us”open your heart to the Schmaltz son!

  3. Jesse says:

Round and round, round we go…

  4. DAN WEBB says:

ANY NEWS ON ALEX SMITH YET?

  5. Greg says:

    Stones > Beatles, 8 days a week.

  6. Lemonpie89 says:

Yeah gotta say Eleanor Rigby is one of the greatest tracks of all time. Gotta give The Kinks some airtime as well.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      True, and Penny Lane, too.

    • ninermd says:

Can I get GH best song……. Here comes the sun? It’s ugly out here.

    • bbthekitty says:

Yeah but the 49ers approach in free agency seems to be more Helter Skelter.

      Charles Manson’s favorite Beatles song!

    • Adam says:

Some of the best-produced music ever made (The Beatles, that is.) Not really a close second, although in recent times, Radiohead and Wilco come close. Kings of Leon and Auerbach/The Black Keys (on some of the recordings) are done very well also.

In the era of MP3 downloads and people listening to stuff on their cell phones with ear buds… I guess none of that really matters anymore. :(

  7. dleo says:

    Jeez, thanks for sharing.

  8. claude balls says:

The Rolling Stones are up next – Beggars Banquet.

Excellent choice. It appears the Cox signing was announced prematurely. “Sympathy for the Devil” would have been appropriate musical accompaniment.

  9. RednGold1 says:

Like Dan Webb says, what’s the latest on alex Smith?

  10. BamBam49 says:

On one hand I think these first two signings are great examples of bargain-hunting by Baalke. He has signed two players with lots of talent to low-risk contracts. The best possibility is getting a legitimate #2-3 corner and a #2 WR for almost no money.

However I am nervous about the off-field issues for both players. It shows how confident Harbaugh is that he can preach the team attitude, but both of these guys are risky. I don’t think Cox will be an issue because the defense has an established personality and veterans to keep him in line. Moss on the other hand, could prove detrimental to the team-first attitude of the offense. At no point in his career has he been a willing blocker or run routes at full speed if he wasn’t getting the ball. In the 49ers offense those are the top two priorities.

    Thoughts?

    • old coach says:

moss has no off field issues compared to cox its night and day

      • BamBam49 says:

Agreed, but Moss has proven to be a much bigger on the field concern in terms of bringing a me-first attitude to the locker room. If Cox makes one wrong step off the field, the Niners will cut him. I don’t know if that will happen if Moss is just being a diva with the team…

      • jgwindsor says:

he doesn’t like meter maids, right?

SF has a meter maid issue don’t they…..or is it all electronically driven now

  11. old coach says:

    wheres the ramones?

  12. Jesse says:

If I can comment on one FA signing, Moss obviously, I’d just like to say I think everyone who is losing their minds over him disrupting the locker room and so forth are kind of forgetting the humble-pie Moss had to eat the last couple of years. Both he and T.O. are in desperation mode right now, the clock is winding down on their respective careers and they have zero championships between them. They both know demand is low for their services, they’ll have to play for cheap, and they better work their tails off to shake the doubts about their abilities. Harbaugh wouldn’t bring Moss on if he didn’t think the guy’s hunger for a title wasn’t legit. Furthermore, if he goes awry, cutting him wont be anymore difficult than it was for Braylon Edwards.

    • BamBam49 says:

I think that’s valid Jesse. I just worry that his attitude will affect the work ethic of other WRs, namely Crabtree and/or any rookie that we draft.

      • Jesse says:

I get that, but I believe that Harbaugh has everyone drinking the Kool-Aid so absolutely, that the players would turn on any dissenters before a real impact could be maid.

  13. mayo63 says:

What do you think of the Cox signing? Our new PR/KR?

  14. Keith "Loon" Moon says:

Don’t forget to play “Who’s Next” with “The Bargain” (for Moss) and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” (for Nate Clements).

  15. Lott says:

Brandon Marshall to bears for two 3rd rounders!

  16. DanBunz says:

Is there a possibility that the niners don’t re-sign alex smith, please give me some hope of a superbowl and say yes! We can’t rely on the greatest turn over margain in 30 years every year. Our defense is gonna wear down with alex’s constant three and outs if we just had a little big play ability at the qb position I would be so happy, I’ve watch 8 years of alex the human blooper reel smith.

  17. 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Brandon Marshall traded to Bears for A3rd rounds picks, we couldve got him for the same picks.

  18. 49erwin says:

I know 49ers are taking a big gamble taking Moss. Historically, he is a trouble maker and at times has a poor work ethic…let’s pray he changed. I could only believe the Miner’s would have rather signed Jackson or Manningham but was not willing to spend money. I want to see wins!

  19. 9ner4life says:

Alex Smith is officially a free agent. At least make a call to Manning for crying out loud.

  20. Grant says:

Randy Moss, Perrish Cox… Makes me wonder, with $20 mil and some change under salary cap why spend so little on key needs! Are they saving up for a surprise Manning push? Or Mario Williams? Carl Nicks?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I don’t see them getting into a bidding war for PM. BTW, the current lead contender, the Denv Broncs have around $50M under the cap.

    • jsand3030 says:

looks like theyre saving big for… Tavares Gooden!!!!

    • bbthekitty says:

Mario Williams would be an incredible feat. I hope they are trying to pull that off.

  21. calbear says:

I still dont understand why we cant just CALL Manning for a workout.

With all this money to spend, I don’t know who we are looking at. Hopefully Nicks, 2 WRs, and a CB.

  22. oldschool9erfan says:

Sounds like a guard might be in their future. If they don’t get Carl Nicks. How about hutchinson for cheap?

    • rebelscum74 says:

One of those two would make me happy. I know football guys are not choir boys or maybe some are, Tebow? but I know your are inoncent until proven guilty but a player that possibly commited rape:? Moss I believe is very Narcistic and may not be great for a young wr class, so like all of you I am scratching my head, but at the same time did any of us think 1, Ninners in championship game,2, Alex on the niners much less a championship team, 3 Aldon Smith who is that:? looking back this weekend on SI’s prediction piece, it had the niners 4th in the NFC West, shows anything is possible:?

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Hutchinson is 34, go for a newer model or upgrade to a Mercedes in Nicks.

  23. James says:

I knew you didn’t have a soul, but jeeeeeez. Get Back? I Want You (She’s So Heavy)? Happiness Is a Warm Gun? Dammit man, I love the Beach Boys as much as the next guy, but come on!

  24. Hoferfan67 says:

Bears just traded for WR BMarshall from Mia – two third round picks.

    • ninermd says:

Can you believe that? Why weren’t we on the phone for that one? Lol

      • Jallen says:

Bears have better picks this year and probably next as well. Plus Marshall is the last thing the niners need right now. Moss and a rookie or 2 is the right way to go. You will see!

    • Grant Cohn says:

Reuniting Marshall with Cutler – two players with poor reputations around the league. Maybe they’ll bring the best out of each other like they did in Denver. If the Bears get Mario Williams, too, they could be Super Bowl favorites.

  25. Grant Cohn says:

Tavares Gooden re-signed, per the team.

    • elGuapo says:

Ooooooo!! Well done!! Gooden was an AWESOME ST’er!! I hear he was a great locker room presences, as well!! I like this!! 9ers showing some continuity!!

      • OpenMinded says:

And he’s from “The U”. Frank Gore, T. Gooden and Cory Nelms (who is better than Perrish Cox). Now let’s get Tommy Streeter and Lamar Miller in the draft.

      • Lemonpie89 says:

        Would rather have costanzo

  26. ninermd says:

I wonder if TB has the skills to get a trade like Chicago just got? That was a great trade for the bears. Who will be here next season. Wheew

    • DS94everXev says:

      @md

      Wallace…please

    • Htesrepus says:

I think his philosophy not his skills are limiting him from making that sort of trade. He wants to build the team through the draft that means stockpiling draftpicks and trading up and down in the draft to get the players they want. The only trades I see them making are to get other teams draft picks.

      • DS94everXev says:

        I disagree.

In 2 drafts, TB moved up a few spots to get Davis and CK.

So the idea that TB won’t trade away picks is false.

      • Htesrepus says:

        Re-read my statement, I said

“trading up and down in the draft to get the players they want.”

Meaning if there is a player they want they will trade away picks to move up to draft players they want.

      • DS94everXev says:

        What is the difference?

If you lose a 1st round pick now, or you lose a 1st round pick come draft day. You still lose that pick. You still end up drafting the same number of players either way.

      • Htesrepus says:

Well you don’t get the same number of picks if you trade a draft pick away for a current player.

What I’m unsuccefully driving at is that when you build through the draft you dont trade away draft picks for current players. You build up a large pool of draftpicks through various trades and trade the excess picks to move up in the draft. Remember a few years ago when we traded away our 2nd round pick for Carolina’s 1st round pick for the next year. That next year we had two 1st round picks and drafted Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati.

My only point is that TB is less likely to trade away draft picks for current players.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Htesrepus

No. I understand what you are saying.

And the supposed king of doing this are Patriots.

But, wanna know something kinda interesting? The Patriots have not had the best drafts in recent years. They have gotten a lot of picks, but many of them did not turn out.

The Patriots got Moss from either FA or trade with the Raiders. I forget which. The point is that they didn’t get their great WR threat in the draft. They got a guy with NFL success.

The Pats have had a ton of picks. Yet, they are still basically Tom Brady and a defense that tries to hang on. After several years of so many picks, shouldn’t their defense be better than this? If this strategy is such a sure fire way to build, how come the Pats (on defense especially) gotten worse? During their 3 titles in 4 year run they had a great defense. Then those guys retired. And, they have never been anywhere near as good. You know the Pats know their defense sucks. They keep trying to improve it, but they can’t.

How come? The Pats have had the most picks by far since that time, and yet their defense for the last 5-6 years(?) or so has been mediocre on their best day. It has been quite awhile since their last Super Bowl, and they still have their franchise QB. So, why can’t they build a complete team around him?

There is some thought that their are two ways to build a winner.

        1. The Redskins way where you sign a bunch of FA’s. Though they have never really won.

        2. Draft a lot. Do minimal work in FA.

Well, in the case of Wallace, I think he is worth a 1st round pick. He is no 29 or 30 year old player. He is just entering his prime. With a rookie, you likely need to wait a few years to get him up to speed. With Wallace, you have a guy who can make an instant upgrade in our greatest area of need. And who will be there for a decade or more. So, you get an experienced NFL winner with Wallace. And another 10 years of good production all for one 1st round pick and some money. Likely double that what we are paying for Mr. 1 catch. That seems reasonable.

      • Htesrepus says:

I think you need a happy medium to be great team. You have to be smart (and a little lucky) in the draft and smart in picking up free agents. Basically balance out the risk and reward and, because of the salary cap, do your best not to overinvest in a player. Most important of all though, the coaches need to know how to use the players they have.

Well the patriots aren’t exactly awful, they’ve been to the superbowl what 5 times in the last 10 years and I can’t remember the last time they’ve had a losing record. They’ve lost alot of coordinators to head coaching jobs, that’s one thing that hurt them. But, I digest I kind of hate the patriots so I don’t have that much in depth knowledge of their roster troubles.

      • DS94everXev says:

        The Patriots are Tom Brady.

Tom Brady goes down, and they are in a lot of trouble. It won’t be like last time. Randy Moss was in his prime and Cassel just had to throw it up and Moss made plays.

I see them in a lot of ways like I saw the Niners at the end of SY’s career. The Niners were 1 really great QB, and WR and a bunch of other guys. When SY went down, the Niners had to rebuild. They looked to have done so until York fired Mooch and the decade of failure began.

Now, QB’s are protected so much now, TB can still play for awhile now. By and large the NFL is a passing league, and if you have TB doing what he does well, then you will have a winning team. But only as long as TB is playing. TB goes out/down, that slack has to be picked up (primarily by the defense) and it won’t be. The Pats will lose a lot of games.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        @DS94ever

I think Belichick is not as sharp as people think or maybe he’s lost some of his edge. The past years he would have multiple picks in the first and second rounds and come away with nothing. When he couldn’t close the deal at 18-0 a little voice told me he’ll never win another.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, if Brady goes dwn they might be ok. They drafted my cousin, Ryan Mallett last year.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

I don’t know if I would go that far. But I do think BB has done everything he knows how to do, and it isn’t getting the job done anymore.

        @jack

Really? Supposedly a long lost cousin of mine coached PM in high school.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Like a 747 DS. What are your thoughts on the 49ers free agency moves so far?

    • redhanddan says:

DX If i recall correctly (i’m too lazy for wikipedia) i believe it was for a 4th round pick trade with the Raiders…low risk, HIGH REWARD.

      • DS94everXev says:

        That could be it.

And, you are right. Low risk. What are the chances of drafting a player of RM’s caliber in the 4th round? How long would it take to develop that player, or does he just walk in and win games for you?

I think Wallace can do the same for us. Though for a 1st round pick. Still can’t be assure of getting a better player than him though, and he will be around for a long time. In its own way, I see it as a low risk high reward deal. If we are able to win 1 Super Bowl it is worth it.

      • redhanddan says:

There’s something about Mike Wallace that doesn’t let me believe he is a legit WR, honestly i would take Dwayne Bowe over Mike Wallace. Don’t ask why, i have my reasons…but if some OTHER team gets Mike Wallace i don’t think he will go over 1,000 yards (called it first)…i may eat my words but i just don’t think if he goes somewhere he’ll have as much success

      • DS94everXev says:

        @redhanddan

        Ok. You have your right.

But Wallace is not a trouble guy. He has been in big games playing in Pitt. And he has produced big.

So, he won’t freeze up like MC did. And, we don’t know if Bowe would freeze either.

  27. CT says:

If Cox is “slow”, could he be converted to Safety?

  28. highpriest333 says:

Jimi Hendrix and a Band of Gypsys, Power of Love.

  29. jsand3030 says:

Robert Meachem is visiting Buffalo along with Mario Williams.. damn Also Garçon is talking a contract with Washington

    • Grant Cohn says:

Laurent Robinson is better than those two.

      • jsand3030 says:

Shoot at this point anyone can help

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Dal got hit with a $10M cap fine so most likely won’t be resigning LR especially since they are in need of CBs desperately.

      • jsand3030 says:

Looks like Laurent Robinson is on his way to visit the Jags

      • Grant Cohn says:

If Robinson signs there, the Niners would have a better chance at re-signing Morgan.

      • jsand3030 says:

Yeah, Im still hoping we get Morgan and a bigger name out there. If were not spending big on WRs and CBs then how great would it be for the 9ers to be saving the cash for Mario Williams?

      • Grant Cohn says:

They already signed Ahmad Brooks. It’s more realistic they’re saving that money for Manning or Wallace.

      • jsand3030 says:

If healthy, Manning can help but is so not their style. Wallace, I can definitely see them jumping on.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        I agree.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, PM and MW doesn’t fit their frugality plan. Don’t see it. If TB was speaking straight, he wants to sign their FAs and that $20M gives them the money to do so…

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof

I believe the new agreement requires teams to spend virtually all the salary cap money.

        You can’t be cheap.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

believe the new agreement requires teams to spend virtually all the salary cap money.

        Not this year.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @claude

Does it roll over to next year(the unspent money)? If not, then the Niners will be looked upon as being cheap and rightfully so.

      • rocket says:

I like the idea of Robinson. Size is good, was a playmaker for the Cowboys. Fits the system and won’t have to give up a kidney to get him here.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

I do not know whether rolling over unspent cap money into the next year is a one time thing this year or an every year thing.

In addition to spending on free agents, the 49ers could get closer to the cap by extending the contracts of current players they want to keep long term. Navorro Bowman may be a logical candidate for such treatment.

As for free agents, I would expect Baalke to do what he did last year – let the frantic first wave of signings die down, survey the remaining players, and sign quality guys to reasonable contracts.

I know we re-signed Brooks, but Kamerion Wimbley is available (with a guaranteed $5 million from the Raiders coming his way). If teams somehow overlook him in the Mario Williams frenzy, he would be a nice pick up. A team can never have too many pass rushers.

As for cornerbacks, Rogers may come back, and other quality guys will still be available next week. Tracy Porter comes to mind.

  30. MidWestNiner says:

Rogers, Nicks, Wallace, Morgan, and Grubbs. From this list, who do you think has the best chance of being a 49er Grant?

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Morgan.

    • jsand3030 says:

      Morgan.. whoops you said “Grant”

    • jgwindsor says:

wouldn’t assume morgan would be much of a cap hit…..correct…..

still leaves the door open for nicks and this may be the best ROI which allows AS to calm down and wait for WR and others to come open as well as being a road grader…..

getting a wallace and not being able to have a few extra moments to survey the field ala brady-like would reduce the ROI…..

and aren’t the niner trying to be like the patriots…or the 90 cowboys in the trenches

      • jgwindsor says:

probably would help with the tipped passes at the LOS if the oline can really keep a clean pocket and allow AS the opportunity to throw in open windows along the line

I still have concerns about anthony davis …. since in my estimation he was the reason the supposed wheel route to DW that AS missed in the championship game and was sacked was because A davis let his man come thru and flush AS to his left into other giants….

      • jgwindsor says:

getting a nicks may really help A davis with outside rushes …. A davis seems to do a lot of helping out on inside stunts and loses vision on the outside pressure

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Nicks would solidify the left side for years. Any mistakes Davis makes inside would be wiped out by Nicks. Please sign him.

  31. Cazzie says:

seems very quiet on both thier right g’s and several special team players. Will they replace the guard internally. seems like management doesn’t value the special teams players as much as the fans.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I’d bet they’ wait on signing a RG to make sure they don’t overpay for one.

      • Lemonpie89 says:

Given how much Blake wants to be back I’m surprised they haven’t signed him yet.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Perhaps he feels low-balled.

      • 23jordan says:

Personally, I don’t think JH likes Costanzo’s over aggressiveness. It got the team penalized on a couple of occasions. I saw JH tell Seely to address CostanZo after a personal foul he committed.

  32. mayo63 says:

Grant, if they re-sign Morgan are they done with WR in free agency?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Probably, unless they can resign Ginn, too.
But I still expect them to draft a receiver, perhaps even in the first round. The Bears won’t be drafting a receiver, so it’s more likely Kendall Wright and Stephen Hill will drop. The Niners will want to hedge their Moss bet in the draft.

      • jgwindsor says:

yep that does appear to take the floyd and hill speculation out of the equation at #19

could prove to be an interesting development if the niners are targeting fleener and hill or floyd are still there for a trade down possibility

      • Grant Cohn says:

I doubt the Niners are targeting Fleener, but depending on how the draft breaks he could end up the best player available at 30.
I’d be surprised if the Niners drafted Fleener over Kendall Wright, Stephen Hill, Janoris Jenkins or Stephon Gilmore.

      • OpenMinded says:

Up until Orson’s DUI, Fleener at 30 was looking good. He may go higher now, unfortunately.

    • MidWestNiner says:

      What about Eddie Royal Grant?

      • Grant Cohn says:

He seems like strictly a slot receiver, and the Niners need a flanker if they lose Morgan. I don’t think Crabtree is quick enough to be a good flanker. He’s better at split end or in the slot.

      • MidWestNiner says:

        True. How about Meachem?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Meachem would be a better option for the Niners than Royal.

  33. jsand3030 says:

Pierre Garçon is signing with Washington Redskins

  34. Big niner says:

Please keep it football only. Knbr used to kill me when pauli would go off for days on a music tangent.
    Any rb’s out there yet?

  35. Adam707 says:

Garcon signing with the Redskins and VJax in negotiations with Tampa. Looks like all the WR’s are signing quick. And the Niners aren’t on any reports. Hoping its like last year

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Think 2nd tier.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Adam707

Good. I don’t want any of those guys anyway. Go for Wallace. Or look towards the draft or some great talent we don’t know about who becomes available. One who we say “Why him?” in August. And come February, we are like “That is why”!”

      • Adam707 says:

If we made no push for VJAX we will not make any towards Wallace either i think. Especially with CHI getting Marshall they will not be drafting a WR first. Maybe Hill or Wright drop to us.

      • DS94everXev says:

        There are complaints about VJax.

There are no complaints about Wallace.

And Wallace is the fastest WR in the NFL. Imagine him with Moss on the other side. The middle of that defense would be open for runs.

  36. jsand3030 says:

    wow! just read this:

Redskins on verge of signing 49ers WR Josh Morgan

    • jsand3030 says:

Im really hoping that we can resign him..

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Whoa. Now, that’s big news.

    • DS94everXev says:

If that happens, so much for my prediction and Grant’s.

    • rocket says:

That actually would make a lot of sense as much as I would hate to lose him. That is home for Morgan and the Skins have a need and not as much Cap space as they thought.

    • Adam707 says:

Adam Schefter reports. Damnit 49ers. WTF are we doing

      • jsand3030 says:

        JasonColeYahoo:
Redskins may get Morgan done for a 2-year deal

      • jsand3030 says:

Its only been an hour into FA. I trust that The niners have a plan. As it is, our only real WRs are Moss and Crabtree, they have to be working on another FA

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I’d hate to see JMorg leave. Very bad news. I know they have a plan and it better be more than RMoss!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        MManningham or RMeachem?

      • claude balls says:

After last year, are we really going to sit here on the first day of free agency and moan about the 49ers’ lack of activity?

        Did no one learn anything?

That said, I share Grant’s concern about the possible shift in the locker room.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I liked Morgan a ton but look at his stats, he never had that breakout year. If he had stayed healthy he would’ve had it last year IMO.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Yup, just heard it from Adam Schefter on ESPN. Dang!

    • jgwindsor says:

      garcon did sign with redskins

  37. mayo63 says:

There saying Morgan close to deal with Washington.

  38. Brotha Tuna says:

Although it doesn’t seem like their usual style, I’d be OK with paying up for Nicks to play RG.
There are only a few WRs in the draft who’d be better than J.Morgan, so I’d like to see him re-signed.

  39. Prime Time says:

Gotta keep Morgan, that would be a big loss

  40. Grant Cohn says:

I just posted something up above in the text about Joshua Morgan. If you’re interested, please refer to it.

  41. Matt49erFan831 says:

Now the Bucs are in talks with Carl Nicks….here comes Torture 3.0 wondering what Cousin Baalke is going to do…plus Garcon is gone, and Josh Morgan is on his way to the Skins, too…ugh

  42. Adam707 says:

Losing Morgan would be a huge loss for us. He was a Pro’s pro. Hard working and dedicated. Have to feel the Niners low balled him in their offers, driving him away

  43. tkamb says:

They have to find a replacement for Morgan. When they signed Moss I imagined them using him for certain situations and not really an every down player since they like to have a rotation at WR. I’ll be highly disappointed if Baalke doesn’t make a move.

  44. Kevin says:

Any word on Snyder or Costanzo?

  45. old coach says:

remember the 9ers MO from this summer they didnt sign anyone early and people were screaming for baalkes head but when we did start signing we ended up with the best FA class we’ve ever signed. i expect much of the same this yr

  46. jsand3030 says:

    Any word on Rachal? (jk)

  47. Adam707 says:

If you look at it as a trade of Moss for Morgan it is a bad trade. Morgan will make the crutial catches and play tough ball every play. He was Smith’s security blanket. Moss will strictly be a deep threat like your dad says, he will probably get limited plays per game. Niners have to go after robinson, meachem or any one of those second tier FA’s. May rely on the draft and get wright or hill. We need a Morgan type of receiver to fill in

    • Adam707 says:

Moss will be limited, Niners know that. We will make a run at another WR. We have too much money to sit and do nothing

    • jsand3030 says:

We didnt have Morgan for most of the season and look at our final record. Im sure theyre looking for a WR as we speak—type

      • Adam707 says:

That was because of our defense. Our pass game was one of the worst and that was partly because of our WR’s. If Moss was our only FA signing our WR core will be the same it was last year

  48. Hoferfan67 says:

If JMorg is gone and they signed RM for one year, they will move up in the draft and get their WR. Probably KWright or SHill. Hmm.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Or Floyd. If there’s one thing the Niners have demonstrated over the last 24 hours it’s that they aren’t worried about adding players with character concerns.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, that is so true. Interesting. If they need to release guys mid year, hope they have backups. It hurt them big time in the playoffs with the practice squad guys.

    • ninermd says:

They could get a damn good reciever with their #1 pick. His name is MIKE WALLACE!!!!! :-)

      • DS94everXev says:

Good to see you come around md.

      • ninermd says:

Ds I’m still in like with MC though. You watch he will be a good one

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

If MC does the things I said I wanted him to do (make big time plays in big games in big moments and learns to catch the football and not drop it and I’m talking playoffs here) then I will eat a straw hat.

You can buy it for me. Send it to Grant. I’ll give Grant my address and he can mail to me.

If MC does not satisfy my requirements for him, you will have to eat a straw hat.

        Whatcha say?

      • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

Staw Hat Pizza is top-notch, but I’m not sure it would survive 5 minutes at the famed CohnZone dining table!!!

  49. Matt49erFan831 says:

But who can say with any certainty that lightning will strike twice for the Niners and Baalke…I have faith, but its wavering a little…however, its still early in the ballgame, so to speak…

  50. Matt says:

Washington signed Garcon. Are they still signing Morgan?

  51. old coach says:

if your looking for early signings for the 9ers you will be waiting along time. do you notice who else is absent from the early signings……the patriots

    • claude balls says:

      @ old coach

… and the Packers, the Giants (except for Martellus Bennett), the Ravens, and other teams that have good track records over the past 5 years.

Right now, the big players appear to be the Redskins (perennially the NFL’s best team in March), the Bills, and the Bucs. Which group do you want the 49ers to be part of?

      • Grant Cohn says:

I think a lot of people here are curious to see if something happens with Mike Wallace today.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Too much to pay…maybe for a QB but a WR? I think not!

      • claude balls says:

        @Grant:

Yeah, but I don’t have a good grasp on the typical mechanics of RFA signings. Do they typically happen early in free agency?

  52. oneniner says:

    …damn….we shldn’t lose morgan…

  53. Michael says:

With Morgan likely to sign with Washington, I say 49ers go strong after Meachem, and consider Royal as a slot option. If not, we should get Kendall Wright, Stephen Hill and/or Marvin Jones in the draft.

Going after Wallace is looking better now because of the lack of WR options, although the teams that would want Wallace still have the cap space to pay him more.

  54. jsand3030 says:

    Reggie Wayne anyone?

  55. Hoferfan67 says:

RMeachem may sign with Bills. Hmm.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Cal’s Marvin Jones would be a good replacement for Morgan. A flanker/punt returner. Second or third round pick.

  56. Stan says:

Lay off the BEATLE put downs. I’ve heard it all before..even Dylan said their songs (then) had nothing to say and others called them nursery rymes. But that band grew like EINSTEIN on steroids crossed with Keats and Beatle-hoven all rolled over into one.
That Brian Wilson -the real one- to this day- say’s the Beatles WERE a greater band and songwriters then the BB’S is to his credit, brilliant honesty.
The battle as I see it-BB’s or Creedence?…

  57. Grant Cohn says:

Great tidbit from Branch: “In their final 9 games together, Alex Smith had a 125.7 rating when targeting Joshua Morgan. (28 of 36, 482 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT).”

    • Stan says:

But,could Jim have settlled for a 45 point win? NOoooo…

    • Adam707 says:

And the Niners didn;t find it necessary to bring him back. This is BS.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Ouch. That makes Morgan’s exit hurt even more.

    • rocket says:

      Adam707,

Relax. Whatever happens we’ve seen HarBaalke prepared and ready to handle what comes their way. It would suck to lose Morgan but there are a lot of other moves left to be made.

    • DS94everXev says:

MC’s production now has to go up just that much more if we lose Morgan.

    • OpenMinded says:

So much for letting the market establish the offer and then match it. More like this is our number: take it or go home. I guess we can always sign TO. (If nothing else just to keep new #84 Randy Moss entertained).

      Good Luck, Joshua Morgan

  58. mayo63 says:

Grant, what’s going on with Alex? Is he signing anytime soon?

  59. jgwindsor says:

i had assume morgan was a keeper as well….

kind of throws a wrench into my thoughts…..

i still can’t get my mind around trading the 3oth pick for wallace and a big dent int he cap space for what i don’t think would be a big ROI at the WR positions just like i thought when the niners took VD at #6 that it was a good investment since TE don’t really touch the ball that often for that kind of money ….. just seems like too much money in one postion for the amount of targeting if the idea of the WCO is to distribute the ball to 6 or 7 playmakers…..and the JH offense tends to do this….

    • jgwindsor says:

VD at #6 was not a good ROI in my opinion to correct a mistype above

    • jgwindsor says:

suppose one could say my infatuation on getting nicks is too much money into one position as well…..and probably not conducive to the future harmony of the oline two and three years down the road

    • highpriest333 says:

Sorry to see him leave such a team player, and true professional.

  60. jsand3030 says:

    Rule #1 of NFL FA:

Never, ever get into a bidding was with the Redskins.

Let them do what they are good at and bid against themselves. There’s no way that Id get into to a bidding was for Morgan

    • jsand3030 says:

      whoops * bidding war

      • jsand3030 says:

WR Pierre Garcon signed a five-year, $42.5 million deal with Redskins that includes $21 million in guarantees, according to league source -

–and this is why they are forever bad.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Daniel Snyder makes a splash in FA and he’s still spinning his wheels since he bought the team.

  61. 49erGirl says:

Alex Smith signs 1 year deal with Cleveland per Matt Barrows…

TE Alex Smith, that is :-)

    • Htesrepus says:

      Ha! Nice

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Hahaha! Got me for that one millisecond! : >)

    • Adam707 says:

HAHA i saw that. Thats very clever. It was like the Jed York tweet yesterday about “A former Colts pro bowl QB throwing to Moss, Harbaugh that is”

      • 49erGirl says:

Barrows did the same thing on Twitter…I just stole the idea ‘cuz it sounded like fun :-)

    • jsand3030 says:

They can have both AS’ Lets save our $$ and get Josh Johnson and go after Wallace!!! (Probably not gonna happen)

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Would y’all PEASE give it up with this lame Josh Johnson stuff? I apologize if that’s disrespectful, but damn Sam!

      • mayo63 says:

If we didn’t sign Moss I’d say go for Wallace, but getting Wallace now would mean him and Moss will be battling for playing time at the same position. I’d rather draft a reciever in the draft that won’t have to come in and start. He can sit behind Moss for a year and be the starter come ’13.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @mayo63

“..but getting Wallace now would mean him and Moss will be battling for playing time at the same position.”

No it doesn’t. Why can’t both be out there at the same time? Imagine Moss on one side. Wallace on the other. VD in the game along with FG and Hunter.

Why can’t the Niners do that?

      • tutomate says:

People need to stop the Josh Johnson crap. If Alex leaves we need an UPGRADE.

I’d much rather let CK start to getting JJ.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @tutomate

“People need to stop the Josh Johnson crap”

Won’t happen. I share your opinion. But they wanted JJ when the Niners were 9-1 and JJ was sitting on the bench in Tampa.

    • mayo63 says:

      LOL.

  62. redhanddan says:

San Francisco, Washington and Tampa Bay both pursuing free-agent CB Eric Wright. Per @AdamSchefter

And since we’re all posting about what we’re listening to at the moment
‘Time For Heroes’ by The Libertines
I guess it’s fitting….c’mon Baalke make some magic happen (just like last year)

  63. Adam707 says:

Niners pursuing CB Eric Wright. Looks like they really have no intent to resign CR

  64. Stan says:

If the Browns want both Smiths…Vince Young is there. Or of course, Payton.

    • Stan says:

Young-he could turn his career around too like Smith with a coach who pounds on his pads to build confidence. Payton doesnt need that,he would be worried Jim misses near the neckage area..

  65. Matt49erFan831 says:

Looks like the Niners are pursuing both Eric Wright and Brandon Carr. Looks like Carlos Rogers is definitely not coming back…

  66. tkamb says:

Yes to Carr, No to Wright.

  67. DanBunz says:

Even though I know that no other team is interested in alex smith I pray a team executive for the Seahawks gets drunk and they swoop in and sign alex smith, it’s a win win, the niners will be way better and the Seahawks will be a non factor. Alex Smith going to Seattle is the football equivalent of giving the Seahawks AIDS.

  68. mayo63 says:

Wright is a smurf corner. I think the Niners like them big.

  69. jsand3030 says:

Well its gonna come down to if the player wants a chance for the playoffs and SB(49ers) or the cash money (Washington and Tampa Bay)

  70. Michael says:

I like hearing this, but could be just a feeler like Nmandi was last year
@AdamSchefter And now the 49ers also jumping in on Chiefs free-agent CB Brandon Carr.

Any thoughts? He will be more expensive, but he is younger and could be better than Rogers.

    • claude balls says:

If a team is going to go after a free agent, Carr is the kind of free agent you want to see it pursue: young and emerging. He’s only 25, and he’s already quite good. Plus, he’s 6′ and weighs > 200 lbs.

He’s just about the only FA CB I would prefer to Rogers.

That said, if his main goal is to maximize his income, the 49ers are not likely to land him.

    • rocket says:

If they are going to go hard after a CB and pay him, I’d rather it be the younger guy with upside like Carr. The Cowboys are after him as well so he isn’t going to come cheap.

    • OpenMinded says:

Maybe the Niners are showing interest in Carr to make Rogers nervous and back down on his demands and re-sign???

  71. mayo63 says:

Get Carr, he’d automatically start over Culliver.

  72. bayareafanatic says:

If Smith hasn’t signed that deal yet, Baalke would be stupid not to at least begin conversations with Josh Johnson. If for any other reason than to show Smith’s agent that they are willing to walk….
    I like Carr…..
Wonder how much Morgan signed for….

    • jgwindsor says:

      2 years 6 mill

    • Shawn says:

Why do so many Niners fans have a hard on for Josh Johnson? Reminds of when Nate Davis was playing for the Niners. Geesh

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Because he is their current QB “flavor of the month”.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Shawn

        Not named AS.

They had the same anatomical excitement over McNabb, Hasselbeck, Kolb, guy down the street.

Best advice I can give you is to skip their posts. It won’t take you long to figure out who is always saying it.

    • Michael says:

I heard 2 yrs for 6 mil per. for Morgan. Washington is overpaying for players again, seems like they didn’t learn from before, now they will give weapons to RGIII, but kill the rest of their team because they can’t pay any good players money, like their defense.

      • DS94everXev says:

How can the Redskins afford $6million/year?

They have been forced to drop their salary for this year 20-30(?) million, and they gave Garcon a huge contract. And they want to draft the #2 overall pick from the NFL draft.

        Something isn’t right here.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @Michael
It seems like Washington has been doing that continuously since when George Allen was HC/GM in the 70s.

      • Adam707 says:

No way they paid 6 per for Morgan.

      • jgwindsor says:

        3 mill per year

washington can split their debt over a couple of years so they are probably finagling…..

      • claude balls says:

Surely, the 49ers would be willing to pay Morgan $3 million/year.

      • rocket says:

I was thinking the same thing Claude. If they think that highly of him, 3 mill is not outrageous imo.

      • rocket says:

Although if Morgan really wants to play near home it’s a moot point.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Claude

If JM gets $3 million from us, no way you keep MC around then.

      • claude balls says:

        @rocket:

        Good point.

        @jgwindsor:

        Sorry for calling you Shirley.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

I’m not sure why you say that. The team does not appear to have excessive funds committed to the WR position.

      • DS94everXev says:

Because the Niners would be spending 8.5-9.5 million the next 2 years on two WR’s who have never really proved themselves better than average.

That is a lot of money going to two guys. Niether of which is exceptional. And whose total sum of salary cap hit could be used to sign 1 player who really is great.

Better to have 1 dangerous great player than 2 average players. Teams never have to scheme around average players. Teams do have to scheme around great players and that opens up things someplace else to exploit the opposition.

      • claude balls says:

        @DS:

I think it’s more like 8.3-8.4, which I do not have a problem with, but that doesn’t really address your point.

I am not as down on Crabtree as you are and have no problem with his salary for 2012. If he’s a problem next year, they may want to think about moving him, but this year seems too soon.

      • DS94everXev says:

If he is a problem this year, then that would be two straight playoffs when he was. And the Niners won’t win the Super Bowl.

That is one to many for my tastes. I am not forgiving 1 catch in the title game and not pointing the finger at himself so easily, and having almost as many drops as catches the the entire playoffs.

I don’t think Moss can be an everydown WR. So, MC will still be facing the other teams #1. And he can’t beat an average #1 CB.

  73. jsand3030 says:

Do the Niners feel that Rogers great season was due to their defensive scheme as opposed to his talent? If they are willing to go after Wright or Carr, it appears that they feel its more scheme

    • captveg says:

That, and age. Rogers is 5 years older than either Carr or Wright. Carr would be an upgrade for sure. Wright would be a slight downgrade, IMO, but not terrible. Culliver would challenge Wright for the job, but Carr would easily win out over Culliver.

      • OpenMinded says:

Yes, but the Niners just went with a 35 year old in Moss over a younger Joshua Morgan. I guess Baalke can be inconsistent about age if he wants to be…

      • claude balls says:

        @OpenMinded:

I am not sure that I would look at the events of the last two days as a trade of Morgan for Moss. They fill two different roles.

Still not happy about losing Morgan, but I will not lose slepp over it.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Open, may be right if this RM signing backfires…

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof

        No. I agree with open.

If the RM thing backfires, then it didn’t cost the Niners much financially. And, M is basically a less mature more expensive version of JM. Both players fill the same role on offense. No big loss to lose one. Just would have preferred it to be MC. JM did things the way I like.

      • Neal says:

Would you pay Morgan a two year 12 million contract and 7.5 mill is guaranteed and missed most of the season which he got from the Redskins or take Randy Moss at 2.5 million not guarantee and it is a low risk and a possible high gain and has scored a touchdown or two in his career. I would go with Moss, if he acts up, throw to him to the curb.

    • Adam707 says:

It is more due to age. They are both significantly younger than Rogers. I would prefer us to get Carr over Rogers becuase we can sign Carr for 5 years as opposed to 2-3 for Rogers

    • Brotha Tuna says:

I think scheme is a big deal. Look at how T.Brown looked so improved when playing in a system he was better suited for. Even Nate would’ve looked better under Fangio. I like Carlos, but I’ll trust Baalke.

    • grimey9er says:

I think the 9ers pass rush is the key to making corners look good. They don’t have to cover as long and can jump routes cause they know the qb is under pressure. I’m looking forward to some young aggressive corners this year. Goodbye Rogers thanx for the best year of your career.

      • Ed Luva says:

Rogers re-signed with SF. 4 years, $29M. Now you’re the guy who’s stuck rooting for someone you made that comment about.

  74. Matt49erFan831 says:

Finnegan would cost more than Carr would…and isn’t he a bit of a headcase?

  75. Hoferfan67 says:

I’ve not seen that JMorg signing by skins is confirmed.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Come on Niner hacker fans.

Give the Redskins a virus to stop any such official transaction allowing the Niners a chance to get Josh back here.

    • jsand3030 says:

      Hasn’t signed officially yet

    • OpenMinded says:

Time to match that deal, Trent! Fake 5yrs and $12M with $7.5M gtee can be easily matched or trumped! GO Trent!

  76. Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers interest in CB EWright fits their 2nd/3rd tier plan for FA.

    • oneniner says:

…he also fits in the system…….he will be great playing under coverage, something carlos did well last yr…….

  77. old coach says:

bad teams panic and pay way to much on the first day of free agency. the 49ers are no longer a bad team and i do’nt see any panic. i wonder how many people on this blog were highly critical of baalke early in the process last yr

  78. Hoferfan67 says:

NFL Net should change their name to the PM Network. Jeez.

  79. 49ersfan4life says:

Is Eric Wright of the Lions, relateted to the former 49er of the same name?

  80. Adam707 says:

Blake Costanzo two offers on the table. None from Niners. He’s our best special teamer. Would be foolish to let him go

    • DS94everXev says:

      Disagree.

      Spillman is better.

But, it would be a bad move to let him go none the less.

      • Adam707 says:

I’d say spillman is more valuable because he got in defense on som redzone packages. But not better when it comes to special teams.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Look for CJones to be the guy on ST this year!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @hof

If so, then why did the Niners resign Spillman? Only place left for him would be to play safety and be the replacement for DG after this season.

      • exgolfer says:

        DS,

There’s room for both Jones and Spillman on STs next year.

  81. mayo63 says:

If Carr is signed does he start over Brown?

  82. rocket says:

They could also be floating their interest in Wright and Carr out there to put pressure on Rogers. Lot of mind games this time of year.

  83. Chicago49er says:

J Morgan was a true football player with huge upside. I am starting to dislike the Redskins!!!

  84. tkamb says:

For good stats on Brandon Carr:http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/12/cornerbacks-a-glance-at-the-2011-numbers/

Qb rating allowed: 61.7 (8th best in the league), Rogers was 9th best with 61.9
Catch percentage: 49.4%(10th best in the league).

    Sign him!

  85. jgwindsor says:

gee, maybe i will have to tip my hat to grant on the wallace call….that would take some of the youngster luster off his resume

  86. Shawn says:

With the players leaving the Niners makes me wonder if it’s because players were unhappy and did a good job of hiding it or Money talks.

    • rocket says:

It’s business. Nothing more. Biggest offer wins the day.

    • elGuapo says:

Yup! money talks, man. Plus I think he saw the “writting on the wall” when Moss was signed. Didn’t want to be a 3rd Under Moss and Crabs. Damn!! This sucks! I was a HUUUGE fan of Joshua Morgan!!

    • claude balls says:

      What players leaving?

      So far, it’s only Morgan.

    • Ed Luva says:

And yet Moss signed for no guaranteed money. $0. Base salary of $1.75M. That barely scratches our cap. Grant makes a point. Moss wasn’t brought in to be the 49ers #1 WR – not at that salary. He’s filling the role expected from Edwards: 500-700 yards and pulling coverage, allowing Crabtree to finally play the slot. With the cap space we still have, we were able to shore up the last starter on defense, Rogers. There’s still room to grab another wing receiver and even re-sign Ginn. Baalke is getting it done.

  87. rocket says:

Skins now have officially signed Garcon, Morgan and added Royal to the mix as well. These poor guys are really suffering from the cap penalities aren’t they?

  88. jsand3030 says:

Peter King just posted that Morgan got $6m

  89. MidWestNiner says:

Anybody know the latest on Nicks or Grubbs?

  90. jsand3030 says:

looks like the skins are about to get Royal too.. Too bad they currently have no one to throw them the ball

  91. Shawn says:

WR Josh Morgan agrees to five-year deal with Redskins that will void to two years. Worth up to $12 million. $7.5 million “guaranteed.”

  92. mayo63 says:

Garcon got like $40M over 5 years or something from the Redskins. Anyone know what the hell their doing?

  93. Big Niner says:

The redskins are getting targets for RGIII, the cowboys should be worried

    • Michael says:

They shouldn’t, Redskins D will be hurt in the future. If they are paying all these players now, they will be hurt in future years.

    • Adam707 says:

They’re doing exactly what they should be doing. RG3 will now be in an offense that he can immediately succeed in. Luck will struggle/

      • mayo63 says:

It’s $40M over 5-yrs with $21M guaranteed, for Garcon? Their crazy.

      • Adam707 says:

It was reported Gracon would get 7-8 Mil per. So thats a little under that. I’m sure his contract is back loaded and they dont intend to keep him the full length of the contract

    • Dennis says:

At a minimum it looks like the Skins are going to be fun to watch.

  94. oneniner says:

…two-year deal worth up to $12 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed…….gotz to be da home advantage

  95. mayo49 says:

    Has Alex signed yet?

  96. oneniner says:

….this is not Free agency blog…..where are the updates on FA???………

…..Grant i think its time you get your self a source in the org…….or write something!!!

  97. Montana Joe says:

  98. Black47 says:

Let me know when you play Sympathy for the Devil for the Redskins.

  99. AES says:

May I re-state once more…. M.Crabtree will be our Starter in 2012. And as an addendum; 2012 and beyond!
    2012 Starting Receivers:
    R.Moss
    M.Crabtree
    Vernon Davis
    And a WR T.B.A. (F/A or rookie)
K.Williams may be on the bubble (he must dominate in TC).

Not crazy about J.Morgan leaving but he has to do what is best for his career. He would have warming the bench here, period!

    • DS94everXev says:

You can state it as much as you like AES.

I’m not going to be excited having Mr. 1 catch and blame others as my starting WR.

      • AES says:

DS, if you are refering to Crabtree (as I assume you are), can you confirm all the times he has blamed others?

      • DS94everXev says:

The post game interview after the game.

I saw it. I watched it twice. I don’t need to see it again. I saw every other player saying I/we lost it. VD said “We just didn’t finish.” KW took all those questions and didn’t give any excuses.

MC though…. he knew he played bad. Really bad for two straight games. And, he says that he needs to be given more opportunities? How about looking at yourself and making those opportunities happen instead of wanting somebody else to do it for you? How about you get open, so AS does not need to wonder if I should throw it or not. If I got open, then AS can give me the ball without wondering about it. How about I practice catching the ball so that AS will know that if he gets it to me, I won’t drop it.

        But, nope. Not from MC.

Like I said. If MC had acted like KW, I would have been able to accept MC’s bad days. Having a bad day is not a choice. Acting/saying what he said is a choice. I forgive bad days readily. I am not so forgiving about bad choices.

Then the comments made last offseason about who is my QB when it was clear that AS would be. He may not have blamed per say, but his attitude was negative. And that is what matters (bothers) me.

    • waterman says:

Crabs will get better just like smith. Second year in the system etc.

      • DS94everXev says:

How does 2nd year in the system make you faster, not drop the ball, get separation and lose weight (JR suggestion)? Or get open 1 on 1, or get a better attitude?

The second year in the system will have minimal incremental improvements for most players. The one who will benefit the most is AS since he will know where everybody else is just that much better. But the thing that will matter most is getting a real WR core. AS would have looked better this year with one. The Niners win the Super Bowl with a better WR.

Even ESPN blowhards said it. The Niners WR’s accounted for 1 catch in that game. That won’t get it done year in and year out. We need to clean house and start all over again with our WR’s. Starting with the guy who never wanted to be here. He needs to earn his job this year. And, I don’t think he really wants too here. He wants to go to Dallas. Let him.

      • waterman says:

I don’t know everything but here’s a few. Knowing the playbook. Just knowing where to go without thinking about it lets you focus on beating the corner and catching the ball. Hopefully a full off season with reps, lots of reps with AS. Last year I saw flashes of goodness and I hope to see more if he is a 49er.

    • ninermd says:

Plus he couldnt stay healthy. Im waay tired of injury prone players. Last year was our first healthy year in a long time. Ginn didnt help though.

  100. mayo49 says:

I’d like to go after Williams, but I think we’re better off drafting a WR and let him sit a year behind Randy.

  101. jsand3030 says:

    JasonLaCanfora:
Randy Moss deal – 1yr, $1.75M in salary, $46,875 per game roster bonuses (max $750K), $1.5M in PT/rec/pro bowl incentives. No guar $ [via Twitter]

  102. AES says:

All that’s left is pulling the trigger on M.Wallace. Alex would do good to receive what the Org is offering, because with these weapons he only stands to prosper and have great negotiating leverage in two years.

  103. Adam says:

    Losing Josh Morgan stinks.

Good for him though, he gets to go home. And… with the addition (it’s presumed) of RG3 in the draft? Might be interesting.

I wish him well. Seems like a nice kid. Hope his leg has healed up and all that.

  104. Shawn says:

This is not a live blog on free agency. The host is MIA lol

  105. mayo49 says:

    Grant, mix in some info.

  106. Stan says:

    What have the Raiders done?

  107. mayo49 says:

Grant, just go to Maiocco’s page and copy and paste.

  108. Brodie2Washington says:

Much rather have Morgan then Moss.

The last time the 49ers played 4 qtrs of solid offense was when Morgan was healthy… against Tampa. Since the Tampa game, the 49ers offense was never the same.

Only 26, Morgan was much better then his stats, and was due for a breakout year.

The 49ers are weaker at wide receiver now compared to 24 hours ago, but I won’t fret (too much). Lass year’s FA period seemed to have a bad start as we were losing key players left and right. But turned out very well in the end. Looks like the Balkie way… act slowly early in FA. Grab bargains later.

    • I Like Eat Crayons says:

Moss’ deal has ZERO guaranteed money, so I can live with that. We are definitely going to get two or three more receivers via FA or the draft though.

    • Michael says:

Not when you consider washington paid him 6 mil per year for 2 yrs. Sorry, he’s not worth that much money. If they paid like 3-4 mil, then I could see the argument we should have tried for Morgan, but not that offer.

      • 23jordan says:

I’ve been waiting for someone to say that. Josh was overpaid. Especially for how our QB uses receivers. Look at Morgans best season. He’s gonna blow up next year. Because he’s not here. The league knows Morgan didn’t get the numbers he could have because of the QB. He catches the ball when it’s thrown to h. He blocks like no other.good luck Josh!

      • claude balls says:

        Haters gonna hate.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, you are so easy. Thanks for stopping by…

      • Michael says:

@Jordan I don’t think Morgan underperformed with the 49ers, nor was Smith a reason either. Smith and him had good chemistry and he was a safety valve for Smith, as he converted more 3rd downs for Smith, even more than Davis did I bet. Morgan did well because Smith was able to trust him.

  109. steelematic says:

Ok i know football. But who the heck is parish cox? Was he a good cb before he was let go? Did he have return tds? Ppl are talking like tgis is a carlos rodgers type signing. Could someone plz enlighten me on this guy. And if we really wanted a good replacement, Brandon Carr would have been a steal at cb. just my opinion

    • mayo49 says:

He was accused of raping a girl in a hotel, but both were drunk and he got off. Is only 25, but was a projected 1st rd pick that fell to the 5th rd. Could be a solid backup and PR/KR specialist.

      • Stan says:

Harbaugh sure didnt learn that from Al who never would have signed somebody who came so close to being locked up for woman abuse.
Well, thats the reputation. Cable seemed to get by now that I think of it.

      • rebelscum74 says:

Harbaugh has said he has no use for some one that puts his hands on a woman.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Agree. Maybe they “see something” in Cox? I hope the Niners nail down either Carr or Eric Wright.

  110. OpenMinded says:

Anyone else here expecting the next announced signing to be Terrell Owens to the Niners? Aaaaaaaaaaaghhh!

  111. AES says:

DS, you tip-toed around my question. Show me where Crabtree has blamed others?

    • DS94everXev says:

      I didn’t tip toe anything.

It was on TV. MC blamed others for not giving him opportunities instead of making some for himself.

During the press conference on Monday, JH was asked about what MC said.

  112. waterman says:

Hows RM attitude going to affect Crabs? Not the best role model for our young WR. We have a big challenge this year. Playing the big boys .

  113. waterman says:

I thought the reason we didn’t add someone like Moss last year was because of the kind of players the 49ers were looking for. If were OK with this why not do it last year and win the darn super bowl. Its confusing to me.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @waterman

It was in the middle of the year.

By doing it now, all the players can meet RM in person and come to their own conclusions about the guy. If you do it mid-season, then that will distract the players having a new element who does not have the best reputation.

Also, if RM turns into a dud, then the Niners can dump him before the season and have paid him zilch. So, this offseason is a very long evaluation of RM’s attitude.

Of course, I am just a fan and have no idea.

  114. Grant Cohn says:

The Niners are scheduled to work out big WR Chaz Schilens, according to Barrows. I wrote about that in the blog text above. If you’re interested please refer to it.

    • Stan says:

Must be something in the Raider locker room that causes highly paid players to catch foot problems. I would pass unless..he’s very cheap and last in line to be picked.

    • mayo49 says:

Glad to have you back, Grant. But, Schilens? Do you think Baalke will give Wallace a ring or is the draft the way they’ll go for that WR and let him sit behind Moss for a year?

    • OpenMinded says:

      Dominique Ziegler, come on down!

    • ninermd says:

He’d come cheap. Thats right up our Gm’s Alley. what a joke

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

Are you kidding? What a joke? Come on, man. Didn’t you learn anything from last year’s FA period? You never admitted to slamming Baalke last year during free agency. Well, I guess we don’t need you to admit anything now, since you’re doing it again. After a 13-3 season and a trip to the NFC Championship Game! You are one funny dude.

      • ninermd says:

Golfer when did I bash Baalke? And Im sure you the almighty saw a 13-3 record coming. Get real or get lost.

    • philly9er says:

      WHO?

  115. Stan says:

Hey-did pork buns and gravy get banned..or did he take a vacation?

  116. elGuapo says:

Ima take a wild, wild, WILD stab in the dark here and say Peyton Manning visits the 9ers in the near future. I’m over analyzing the situation and just have a hunch “PM” (as he’s affectionately known ’round these parts) will see what the 9ers have to offer. Man, am I crazy or what?!?!

    • 49erGirl says:

Yeah, but crazy in a good way. I’m hoping to hear the same thing…

It’s eerily quiet on the Alex Smith front as well…

      • waterman says:

You didn’t hear he signed with the Browns. Well that’s what the bloggers on NN said.

      • 49erGirl says:

haha…not talking about AS the TE here :-)

      • elGuapo says:

It is, isn’t it?! I just have a gut feeling’bout this one. I’ll eat my words if not. But I don’t think anyone takes me serious, anyway :’(

  117. steelematic says:

Morgan just made it official… He is a hog head. Oh and for the ppl who will be broke up because of this, dont be. He has been here his whole career. What has he done? He was paid way more than what we offered. I cant say ill miss him because the only thing that stood out was his blocking. So was Arnaz Battles. Great blcker who showed signs evry now and then. Ill miss his blocking… hmmmmmm Hope all works well

    • DanBunz says:

Yeah Morgan didn’t do alot here, like no wr does cause he has pathetic alex smith throwing him the ball. Every other team knows sf wr’s numbers are tainted cause they have alex inaccurate smith throwing him the ball.

  118. waterman says:

I think Moss is stopgap until we draft the next great 49er WR. We will try to do that this year. We will sign second tier guys to fill holes and draft our future stars.

  119. steelematic says:

Hmmmm. Thanks Mayo. OH n enjoyed the laugh. He got off huh. lol

  120. Tony says:

I really hope he 49ers sign Eric Wright CB from the Lions he basically had the same stats as Carlos Rogers did and he’s only 26, so the 49ers could offer him a 5 year contract to play through his prime with the 49ers… IMO, he makes almost too much sense.

If they sign him, then the draft basically becomes a look for offensive players only just about…

    • Grant Cohn says:

When Baalke actually spends big money on a CB, I’ll believe it. Until then, I’m skeptical. It seems like he’s comfortable with bargains at that position.

    • tkamb says:

Eric Wright allowed the 6th most yards for a corner in the NFL last season. Thats one reason the Browns and Lions have been so quick to part with him. Theres better corners out there.

  121. ninermd says:

    Good bye Vincent Jackson. FU***************************

  122. tkamb says:

Vincent Jackson deal in Tampa: 5 yrs $55.55 million. Does that make the price too high for Wallace?

    • ninermd says:

Who knows? The Steelers have to match. I dont think its going to be that much, plus we would lose a #1. Dont count on it. Looks like we got a cheap skate as a GM

  123. ninermd says:

Looks like our GM likes playing Beane ball.

    • grimey9er says:

Look where it got the A’s.

    • ninermd says:

      I know. Im an A’s fan =-(

    • Brotha tuna says:

Dude, it hasn’t even been 5 hours of FA yet. Loosen your seatbelt, this flight takes a few days.

      • ninermd says:

Tuna……This was a WR thick free agency this year. A spot we need bad to carry our QB. And whats left? Wallace. This is a poor and cheap way the 49ers front office is going about it. period!!

      • Brotha tuna says:

        @Ninermd
I’ll admit they hold their purse strings close. Also Wallace is the only FA difference maker left who we probably won’t spend for, and we don’t know who we can get draft day, but let’s see what they’ve got in mind before we think they’re blowing it.
I made that mistake last summer.

      • ninermd says:

I just got a gut feeling there wont be a big splash. I hope Im wrong. Pitt doesnt have the money to match I wonder if they are at least interested. This dude from Oakland is a Joke. Moss isnt Smiths and the passing games savior. Yeah Im a little riled up. lol

  124. 23jordan says:

Warriors to trade Ellis, udon and kwame brown for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson? Oh my God. The warriors are sick. That’s just plain stupid!

    • ninermd says:

      Thats Warrior basketball. wheeew

      • 49erGirl says:

Makes me proud to be Kings fan, lol!

Speaking of which, I’m off to the game! Goooo Kings!!!

      • ninermd says:

49er girl. Boooooo GO LAKERS! You might see me with those Laker flags flying in Sac. I live in Natomas. WHEEEEW

Don’t get me started on the Lakers…I still have painful nightmares from 2001/2002.

Although seeing Rick Fox get punched by Doug Christie will always be a fond memory – one of my favorite Kings moments :-)

      • ninermd says:

I put holes in my ceiling from the Horry shot, and Fox was jumped by Christies wife. NO FAIR. LOL

    • exgolfer says:

      Jordan,

Where are you seeing that? You’re right, that would be a horrible trade. I would do that trade if Udoh was not involved.

  125. 23jordan says:

    Udoh I meant

  126. Stan says:

Not really a bad trade..Warrior fans were fixated on the blockbuster propaganda. The NBA laughed at Monta for Howard or Paul.
Its a start. Its just more proof of how bad in quality the team really has been.

    • Stan says:

Look,Lacob kept RILEY..this trade has “As deep as I can think” of RILEYS all over it.
If the had a great GM..then-possibly a better trade. But Lacob kept the Nelson small ball enabler as GM.

      • Grant Cohn says:

They’re tanking the season in hopes of getting a high draft pick. They’re trading small for big. Now they have a very good front court – Lee and Bogut. The Warriors have never had a front court like that.

      • Jsand3030 says:

They shouldnt have had to give up Udoh too..

      • grimey9er says:

They are totally tanking. They lost their best defensive big(Udoh) and brought back an injury prone center who isn’t even playing now. Jackson for Monta is kind of a wash. We’ll see how they look shorthanded against the Kings. Hopefully their record is bad enough at the end of the season to get a top seven pick.

    • Stan says:

Dammit GRANT-that was my next post. They can lose…get a great pick..Its next year with a real team re built.

      • Grant Cohn says:

They could luck into Harrison Barnes from UNC in the draft, run out Curry/Thompson/Barnes/Lee/Bogut next season. Better than this year.

      • Stan says:

Jesus-the Warrior hope meter blipped. Cant remember the last time it did.

    • NickRow says:

      @Stan
You got your wish and got a little Warrior action on a Niner blog.

  127. AES says:

23J, where did you hear this?
If this is true the warriors just lost a fan of over 30 years, period!

    • exgolfer says:

The trade went down. Too bad they had to include Udoh, and I hope Curry and Bogut are healthy.

      Curry
      Thompson
      Wright
      Lee
      Bogut

That’s not a bad starting lineup, but the bench is depleted

  128. Jsand3030 says:

Costanzo will not return to 49ers.. our ST has taken a big hit without him and TG

    • Grant Cohn says:

My guess is they viewed Spillman and Gooden as the essential players on the coverage unit.

  129. elGuapo says:

HOLY CRAP!!! Just heard that McDonalds is bringin’ back the McRib!!!! For good!!!!!! I’m trying to confirm!! I’ll post the link when I do!!! WOW!!

LMAO!!!!!! Can he run routes and catch for the 9ers?

      • AES says:

I don’t know about McDonalds, but I know the ‘King’ from Burger King can make some plays as a DB!
That is when he’s not creeping me out with his frozen smile stare. (lol).

    • AES says:

      (lol) El Guapo, classic!

    • exgolfer says:

The McRib is the Randy Moss of foods. You want it so badly, even though you know it’s no good for you. You break down and order it, it smells good and the first bite is delicious, but by the time you’re finished, you’re grossed out and completely disgusted with yourself for giving in to your worst impulses.

      • ninermd says:

Yeah Golfer……..Great way to trust our GM and his decisions. Are you for real? What a joke!

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

That was a joke. I trust Baalke, unlike some who are calling it a joke that he hasn’t signed Wallace [who, by many reports, may end up going to end up back with the Steelers] yet.

      • ninermd says:

Sure it was Golfer. 30 mill in cap space and they sign a reciever off the streets, and 2nd tier CB and are looking at a walking crutch from oakland? With your chants of get a deep threat reciever for Alex. Im suprised your not in shock. I hope they have something big up their sleeve, but after last year and so far this year, it doesnt look like thats Baalke’ MO.
And another thing. quit putting words in my mouth. The last time I was upset at the GM not getting a big name was when Peppers was on the market. And guess what. Baalke wasnt here. Dude you will never be a bigger fan than me. You are really out of your league against this die hard. Stick to your other guys to argue. Im just trying to get through this FA period. With no arguements. Ya Dig?

      • AngusinCanada says:

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

You’re going to play the “I’m a bigger fan than you” card? What makes you think I care which one of us is the biggest fan?

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

When have I “chanted” for a deep threat? I’m not saying the 49ers couldn’t use one, but I don’t think I’ve chanted for one.

The only thing I chant for is world peace and to ward off posts by you, Bay and Jordan. Before you go getting all bent out of shape, that was a joke, too.

  130. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

MM- Costanzo won’t be back, team looking for special team players that play positions—-Bummer.

Grant- Schilens to visit 49ers. What is his height and is he a deep threat.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      • grimey9er says:

        you forgot injury prone.

      • 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Thanx Grant, just talked to my friend he’s a Raider fan, and he said the same thing but that he was playing pretty good before he got injured and didnt look the same after it.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        He’s usually injured.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Dropped balls are drive killers. Big possession receivers have to have great hands.

Stephen Hill is big and faster. I hope he drops to #30. I also like Fleener if Hill is gone.

Youtubes of Hill show speed, toughness and circus catches in traffic, but he also had clean drops of sure TDs with no one near him. Is that correctable?

  133. AES says:

    Grant Cohn says:

“They’re tanking the season in hopes of getting a high draft pick. They’re trading small for big. Now they have a very good front court – Lee and Bogut. The Warriors have never had a front court like that.”

Bogut’ injury history scares me more than the Randy Moss experiment (didn’t want to deviate to far from football). Curry’ persistent ankle injuries also gives me pause. Monta has been at the center of trade talks for a while, but trading him for the oft injured Bogut makes no sense. And if they’re throwing in Udoh as well (especially for Stephen Jackson), I would have to agree with, they are ‘tanking’ the season.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Bogut isn’t injury prone – no bad knees or bad feet like Greg Oden – he’s just had freak injuries happen to his elbow and ankle. When he’s healthy he’s a world class defender who can board and score in the post.

      • AES says:

        Andrew Bogut:
“It’s a frustrating injury because you don’t know the extent of it,” said Bogut, who will have another ankle scan in two or three weeks. “If we made the playoffs, I would like to be back.
“But at the same time, with these injuries you have to be 100%. You come back at 80%, then you have an Achilles’ problem or a calf problem. As opposed to the elbow, where I knew I wasn’t coming back 100%.

Not a ringing endorsement, but if he can be what you described perhaps he could be a good fit. Another run with Stephen Jackson makes my stomach turn.

      • Grant Cohn says:

They should shut down Curry and Bogut and pray they heal for next season. Still, that’s a tough spot to be in.

      • rebelscum74 says:

Like your take, You are actually being soothing!

    • Highpriest333 says:

As a Laker fan I would love to trade for Monta, and one of your bigs in exchange for Pau.

      • ninermd says:

But Monta doesnt play defense Priest. Lakers are probably going to wait till next year to get that point. This year doesnt count anyways. IMO * LOL

      • Highpriest333 says:

2 first round picks and a strong draft.

  134. AES says:

    *agree with you*

  135. Tony says:

Makes sense that Josh Morgan left because, he wasn’t going to go up against Randy Moss for a Jersey Number Dispute…

  136. Highpriest333 says:

I would love for us to draft Marvin Jones.

    • grimey9er says:

He’s solid. good middle round choice. I’d like to see them draft Doug Martin from Boise. Huge upgrade over Dixon+future bell-cow.

    • Highpriest333 says:

Marvin Jones will be gone in the second round, third at the latest.

  137. Neal says:

Do you think Balke and Harbaugh are on pins and needle’s regarding Alex Smith. My guess is that they are already on Plan B, Alex is probably going to have to wait till Peyton Manning chooses a team, and see if anyone is desperate. If he does leave it will take him a few more years before he learns another playbook, by that time another head coach will be fired along with 3 offensive coordinators.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

It seems to be taking longer than expected. Maybe something is going on.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AS is probably shaking his head like the rest of us trying to figure out what kind of receiving corps he will have after JMorg leaves and the long in the tooth RM was signed. They must have their eye on one WR in the 1st round and will move up to grab him.

    • Neal says:

I wonder how the Alex Smith sweepstakes is going ? Alex please don’t call home.

  138. waterman says:

Do you really think the 49ers were going to pay a WR who just broke his leg anything close to 6M a year?

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Hated to see Morgan go, but 6M (7.5 guaranteed) per year is alot.

With all that cap room who will the 49ers go after in FA?

  139. tkamb says:

Finnegan to the Rams 5 years/50 mill. Doubt we sign Carr now.

  140. ninermd says:

You are one funny dude- by Ex Golfer………………………………This what this clown had to come in and say to me.Then———————————————————->

The McRib is the Randy Moss of foods. You want it so badly, even though you know it’s no good for you. You break down and order it, it smells good and the first bite is delicious, but by the time you’re finished, you’re grossed out and completely disgusted with yourself for giving in to your worst impulses-Exgolfer

Then he comes out with this nugget. Yep Sounds like full trust in our GM.
Had to smack you in front of the classroom Golfer. Your pathetic. Wrong one to start some $hit with.. WOW!

    • exgolfer says:

      MD,

The McRib post was just a joke, take it easy.

You’re the one who is complaining that Baalke is cheap and not signing anyone. You were ripping Baalke last year for not signing any of the top FA’s. You won’t find any posts from me saying anything like that, ever.

      • elGuapo says:

Oh snap!! My intentions were not to start a feud. Sorry fella’s. However, Exgolfer, your joke was pretty funny, I hafta admit, lol!!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, it was more a parody of this process having all of the *fans* on the edge of their seats trying to figure out what the 9er plan is since we are on the outside. I didn’t see it as a put down and I found it humorous since we all take this so seriously.

  141. ninermd says:

Grant…… Do you think the 49ers arent going big in FA because of the Smith “holdout?” Could this be a problem for them getting a reciever right now? Just wondering if not having a qb this moment is slowing things down.

    • Grant Cohn says:

The Niners are checking at the poker table. They want to see more cards before they push their chips. They’re being patient for patience sake.

      • Highpriest333 says:

It also helps that this is limit poker, and we have quite a few chips left.

      • ninermd says:

Nice. My friend said the same thing. Yeah Im a little more crazy and the, “get it done now type.” Patience has never been a strong quality of mine. =-)

      • Brodie2Washington says:

Grant, sounds like a rerun of last year. I remember several days of hand wringing over losing Franklyn, missing out on Namdi and not re-signing Goldson right away. It all turned out pretty well.

Seems to be the Trent Baalke way…
        1) Make moderate contract offers early but avoid bidding wars. (Also helps increase slightly the prices rivals have to pay signed players)
        2) Get value later

My question is… does Baalke’s gift for spotting underpaid defensive talent translate to receivers? With a sport so talent diverse as football, one would think scouting abilities would be more position specific.

      • msclemons67 says:

        You’re exactly right B2W.

I’m actually sort of surprised Baalke has made this many moves so fast.

  142. grimey9er says:

According to Schefter Wayne re-signed with colts. 3 year deal

  143. jgwindsor says:

heard only one team has contacted nicks…..

    who is that team

    • Shawn says:

      Tampa

      • NickRow says:

Tampa just signed V. Jackson, I doubt they’ll go after Nicks as well.

      • Michael says:

Why not Nick? They have plenty of cap space to get anyone they want. If they want Nicks, they can easily out pay anyone for him. That is why the Cowboys decided to bring in Grubbs instead of Nicks. They heard Bucs were really interested and once they got hit with that $10 mil cap from the league, Cowboys went with a cheaper option.

  144. Shawn says:

I thought TB and JH wanted to keep this team together. So far we have lost Morgan,Castanzo, maybe gonna loose Rogers and possibly more.

Well at least we signed Moss and some backups.

Any word on other free agents such as Ginn, Snyder?

    • Brodie2Washington says:

I would like to see Ginn and Snyder signed, even if they are not starters.

Ginn has value on special teams. Snyder because he is versatile. He can play center and guard. He pass blocks better then Chilo. (OK, parking meters are more nimble then Chilo, but you know what I mean)

    • msclemons67 says:

They kept the most important part of the team together. All 11 starters on defense returning. The D will carry whatever Baalke patches together on offense.

  145. NickRow says:

    @Grant
What’s going on with Alex Smith?

    • TIM says:

We have been asking that for 7 years Nick . :)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Just for you Tim we’ll “free TSmith”! LOL

      • TIM says:

Hof,I think it was MM that had a tweet today that another team had signed Alex Smith…the TE ! He couldn’t resist !
OUR Alex will sign soon !

      • TIM says:

…Who is TSmith ? (we have had soooo many Smiths on the team I thought they were going to change the name to “The Santa Clara Smiths”.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Meant “Free NDavis” lol

      • TIM says:

Nate was already set free…from the NFL . :) Nice kid though !

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, admit you’re still following his career he was your favorite here. lol At least you are loyal. lol

      • TIM says:

You seem to know more about Nate than I do Hof,lol. Is he even trying out for the Arena League ? But in college he was a great player ! Too bad he couldn’t absorb an NFL playbook,he would have been at least a great backup ! He was a leader and carried Ball State on his shoulders. Great arm and a very good scrambler and a big kid who didn’t go down easily and made things happen when the called play broke down. And he was a very nice kid, like alex. Sad he had that learning disability :( .

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, not the point and you know it, but could way to deflect and divert your 100s+ previous comments!

      • TIM says:

You had a point ??? All I ever said about Nate Davis was that he was a more naturally talented QB than Alex. I also said that there are no guarantees and that he would have to prove himself on the field in the NFL. Then when he couldn’t handle the playbook and had a few other issues I said it was too bad that he had to go but it was the right thing to let him go because he couldn’t handle the playbook.
I never got YOUR point ?

      • TIM says:

…You are one weird guy Hof. I try to be friendly with you but you have some sort of chip on your shoulder .Get over it and join in the adult football talk and get off your high horse and obsession with what you imagined I once thought about Nate the Great.

      • TIM says:

…Why not just TRY to be happy for a change and be friendly with other fans of OUR team ??? If you feel you must snipe then why not just kick your dog or something to release your hatred and then come back on the site and be friendly with the other fans?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

After all the backhanded comments, you want to be *adult*? But I’ll let bygones be bygones until your next snarky comment. lol

      • TIM says:

        Thank You !

      • TIM says:

Oh great, Claude has to get his 2 cents worth of hatred in. Now you made your day. Hope you are happy !

What some people do when they are hiding behind a keyboard. Pathetic .

      • claude balls says:

Yes, TIM, that is what you are.

      • TIM says:

I love you Claude,I love you Hofer !!! Now can you quit ? Do your Mommas know you act like this on the internet ? lol
Football, remember that ? If you want to get therapy then go to a shrink, not a football site.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Tim, everyone knows your MO. Now on to your next blog…

      • TIM says:

Kiss Kiss ! Now do you feel better ?
What do you two think about Rodgers or Moss or even Alex,or is football something you know nothing about and that is why you feel you must lie and attack other fans with your nonsense ?
Come on fellas,I try to be nice tyo you and all you want to do is attack? Sad !
Good night, feel free to lie about me and others some more when I leave. If it makes you feel like you are not inferior.
        Good night friends !

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Tim, relax.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, because it is Tim. He is notorious here for years posting backhanded comments and saying outlandish things that only he can add. He is known as the cut and paste hit and run blogger – you’ll see his comments (usually multiple times) at all of the 9er blogs.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I don’t know about all that, but he’s being polite enough tonight.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Come on hof/claude

There was no fight there. No insults started.

Take Tim’s advice and skip his stuff if he has done enough to piss you off. I’m not going te tell you that you have no right to feel as you do. Just don’t start fight when there was no fight to be had.

If you find yourselves doing that with Tim, then you two don’t mesh. Cool. Skip his posts. Problem solved.

JasonColeYahoo: CB Carlos Rogers about to re-sign with SF. Deal will avg about $7.3 mill per year

    • Tony says:

So stoked… Now, the 49ers are just about completely set on the defensive side of the ball… Next up is running back, wide receiver, and right guard…

    • Brodie2Washington says:

Fantastic! Hope it’s true. The defense would be intact! Also hope its a shorter then 5 year contract, or incentive weighted.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

TKamb, good to hear. It has to be 9er (TB) friendly. It will be interesting to understand the details.

    • MidWestNiner says:

My question is who will cost more: Flynn or Smith? I still believe Smith hasn’t signed yet because he wants to see what weapons will be available to him here. If Moss can’t cut it, then the team still has the same problem it did last year.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Mid, same as last year. KKolb was overpaid on a limited amount of work and now their ready to kick him to the curb. So yes, MFlynn will get more money based on *two* games. Good luck to them!

  149. TIM says:

Great news about Rodgers ! MM was saying all day today that Rodgers was not coming back .

    • Shawn says:

Your right he was saying that all day. I wonder if the Niners are still gonna go after Wright?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Maybe the reports that said the Niners were interested in Wright prompted Rogers to take the deal.

      • Shawn says:

You could very well be right on that Grant.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

If Rogers signs, the first day of FA is grading out well despite losing Morgan (I agree, 6M per year is a bit much for Morgan).

      • Grant Cohn says:

If Rogers signs, the Niners have no more money left for wide receivers in free agency and they’ll have to go to the bargain bin to pick from guys like Chaz Schilens.

      • TIM says:

        Waaaay too much for Morgan.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Great that Rogers is coming back.

      • Lemonpie89 says:

Or they go bargin bin and draft – which is a bit more likely. There is more value for WR in draft than free agency.

      • Grant Cohn says:

That’s probably what they’ll do. They could draft Kendall Wright in the first round and Marvin Jones in the second.

      • DSL94DSLDSLDSL says:

Grant, that’s assuming they really, really want to sign Alex Smither Smith.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

It *seems* they spend the lion share of the budget (cap) on the defense. It will be interesting how the next several weeks play out before the draft. They need a WR and RB on offense. Hmm.

      • claude balls says:

        @Hoferfan67:

I would expect Baalke to target both positions in the draft. Further to what Lemonpie89 wrote, there’s probably more value for both WRs and RBs in the draft.

      • MidWestNiner says:

They also need a RG. I question whether Kilgore is ready to assume a starting role yet.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Exactly Claude. I can’t imagine them not addressing the RBs and god forbid FG goes down and it is the WR situation all over again in the playoffs. They need those areas addressed ASAP. BTW, I’m not disappointed with the signings for the defense but the offense needs help as well.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Grant

Can you please reveal the identity of the loser who has no life if he is a double poster.

    • NickRow says:

Morgan is getting $6 million over two years, not per year. That was a fair deal and we had the cap room to make it happen. Disappointing

      • rocket says:

He’s guaranteed 7.5 mill and can make up to 12 mill in the first two years. It’s a lot but I agree I would have liked to have seen him come back. Thing is he might have already decided he wanted to go back home.

  150. izzball says:

It’s clear that contrary to media expectations, the Niners were not all that interested in Morgan or Costanzo as they hardly pursued them. No need to panic after only the first day of free agency.

  151. TIM says:

    Grant:
How many years for Rodgers ?

  152. DSL94DSLDSLDSL says:

$7.3 is WAYYYYYYY TOO MUCH FOR CARLOS CHUMPY ROGERS

  153. ninermd says:

Grant……Any looks at Bush from Oakland? I think he’d be a great fit for this team. I see Gore slowing down some, and Bush is a spitting image and the power back we need to back up Gore or take over if he goes down.

Bush wants to be a strater

    • MBig says:

i also like Bush. he could be the starter in SF. remember throw the ball out on the field and may the best player win. i keep hearing Harbaugh and Baalke say that they are always trying to get better at each position. Gore only has about a good yr or 2 left b/c u can clearly see over the past 2 seasons that he is starting to slow down. Dixon and Hunter clearly are the future.

  154. Tony says:

    Rogers signs a 4 year deal worth a maximum of 31 million…

  155. CT says:

    Official Blake Costanzo to Chicago

  156. EB Niner says:

Could they afford a receiver like Early Doucet? He’s 6′ 211lbs, faster and better than Schillens! He had 54 receptions last year as a third WR in AZ and they had no QB.

  157. petefromtx says:

    grant
    I.thought.the.niners had20+mil in capspace??how can they.not have enough.space for a decent.WR

    • NinersRoc says:

I was wondering the same thing….plus we get a little more because of what Dallas and Washington lose.

      • Michael says:

I believe even after this deal, they should probably have like 13-14 mil left in cap space. Also, if they release Spencer, they would gain 3.3 mil to spend as well, and I think they will now that they are pretty set at CB.

  158. DSL94DSLDSLDSL says:

    Shouldve signed Carr 5 years $31 M
    Rogers old old old
Smither Smith probly gettin the Brinx truck too

    Baalke just went all weak-kneed

  159. Brodie2Washington says:

The big cash is being thrown as receivers, cornerbacks, pass rushers (and likely quarterbacks when Manning signs). Yup… the NFL is definitely a passing league.

  160. NinersRoc says:

ROOOGEEERRRRSS!!! Gonna be a tight secondary! Especially if Cully makes strides. A couple changes to come: Spencer (gone) & Reggie Smith (gone). This will give us a few more million $$ toward the Cap. However, anymore FA moves will involve trades (probably for picks). But then again….who know’s what will happen.

  161. Neal says:

Rogers is back way too much money but hell it is not mine

Veteran cornerback Carlos Rogers, who tied for the 49ers lead with six interceptions last season, will re-sign with San Francisco on a four-year deal for approximately $30 million, Yahoo! Sports reported. The deal will average $7.3 million annually.

    • rocket says:

Finnegan just got a 5 year 50 mill deal from the Rams. Rogers at 4 years and 30 is fine with me. Good deal on a pretty good CB as far as I’m concerned.

Well HarBaalke achieved their goal of keeping the band together…on defense anyway. All 11 starters will be back next year. That is huge. Great job.

      • Neal says:

He might be only good for two more years, before age kicks in. better then Nate Clemmons that was a waste of money.

  162. MontanaMan16 says:

“It’s looking more and more like the Niners plan on starting Moss, which would be a very risky move, or they plan on picking a starter – Joshua Morgan’s replacement – in the draft.”

I had to copy and paste that and reread it again to make sure I was reading that right! Are you kidding me? We sign Moss to an incentive laden deal, a probowl incentive, a playing time incentive, and you actually dont think he will start? Risky? I just can’t even believe I’m reading this. The report from the Saints workout with Moss was “OFF THE CHARTS”. There isn’t anyone that has grown to hate Moss over the years more than me, but for the love of all that is Holy! What are we gonna do with him then? This man is going to be obsessed. We just gonna put him in when we get to the Red Zone? Just stick him in there when its time to go deep and just stick a big sign up that advertises this? Holy Cow! This man on the field is gonna have to make defenses think. No more stacked boxes to stop Gore! Who do you double team? VD? Moss? The possibilities are endless. If we draft Fleener, we are going to be very difficult to defend. Am I the only one seeing this? Please tell me no!!! Oh ya, How in the hell is he gonna make the probowl if not a starter.
If you want to see the bad side of Moss then go ahead and not start him. Go ahead and limit his playing time. Yep, then we just signed a cancer. This isn’t going to be the Moss you saw in Tennessee. I still cant believe I read that!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Montana, hear what you are saying but based on history both playing and personality, of course it is risky.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Outrage aside, what percentage of the snaps do you expect Moss to play in 2012? I’d be surprised if he ended up playing more than 50 percent of the snaps. He’s old, he doesn’t block and he runs two routes – the go and the slant. He has arthritic knees. He doesn’t run full speed in practice to preserve them.

    • claude balls says:

      @MontanaMan:

Please allow me to play Devil’s advocate for a moment. If Moss’ workout with the Saints was truly “OFF THE CHARTS,” why didn’t the Saints offer him a contract, especially a modest incentive-laden contract?

The 49ers did not sign 2007 Randy Moss. They signed 2011 Randy Moss. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

The 2011 RMoss that didn’t play in 2011.

      • claude balls says:

Sorry, I meant the 2012 Randy Moss.

        Thanks Hoferfan67

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I definitely think he will start. I believe he has something to prove. I believe he still runs in the 4.3 to 4.4 range. I do belive there will be packages that he wont be out there in. And I believe there will be packages that he will be the only wr out there. I’ve never really tracked percentages of anyones time but I would guess 70%. And I believe that some people are gonna be surprised at his youth. Just a feeling!

      • Grant Cohn says:

Do you think the Niners receiving corps is better today than it was a couple days ago?

      • DSL94DSLDSLDSL says:

Grant that question is a joke, right? Moss is the most talented WR ever to play in the NFL. Bet you Harbaugh knows how to keep him happy.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“Do you think the Niners receiving corps is better today than it was a couple days ago?”

Grant, to date, that is a big NO!

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Grant, you only take the Bentley out on weekends.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        @ Grant
        Oh definitely! Don’t you?

      • Grant Cohn says:

No, Morgan is a young, up-and-coming every down flanker. Moss is an old specialty player. You can only use him in certain packages and situations.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

A couple days ago we had Crabs and Williams under contract. Now we added Moss. Did I miss someone? If you believe we got the Moss we last seen then we didn’t. If we got a motivated Moss with a chip on his shoulder then we improved vastly. I think the latter!

      • Grant Cohn says:

A couple of days ago Morgan was still technically a 49er.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I bummed we lost Morgan but we didn’t really have him.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        Alright, I’ll give you that.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Hey moron DSL

        I don’t have DSL.

Jump off a bridge. Nobody cares about you.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

@Claude. I believe a workout is a 2 way interview. We may never know if they made an offer. In a workout the player is also interviewing the team. Maybe Moss wasn’t impressed with the whole bounty thing! I don’t think he was desperate enough to jump on the 1st team calling. Instead, used the workout as publicity for other suitors!

    • Neal says:

Montana, you are one rev up dude.

  163. Shawn says:

Lets not forget we need WR’s and our starting QB has not signed

    • MontanaMan16 says:

I understand we need depth at wr but how many times do we go with 3 wr sets. maybe more in the future and injuries may have dictated that but did anyone see the Moss signing and there first thought was he’d come off the bench?

    • DSL94DSLDSLDSL says:

In the words of the GREAT Michael Crabtree…
      “who’s the starting QB?”

  164. MontanaMan16 says:

Sorry, i was late getting to the party? Kinda stunned reading that. Great news on Rodgers. I wonder if he’ll start!

  165. fesnyc says:

there’s more movement and volatility than i would have guessed (Morgan, Moss, Castanzo, etc), but the first of my must do/let’s-see-the-forest-from-the-trees moves seems to be happening when many thought it was a lost cause: Carlos Rogers.

good cornerbacks, as it turns out, really are worth their weight in gold…actually, a couple mil more per annum.

next up: impact player at WR, and young talent at G and RB. then they better hide that SB trophy cause we’re comin to get it.

  166. Grant Cohn says:

If the Niners can give Rogers most of his bonus in ’12, his cap number could be low and Baalke could still conceivably make a run at Mike Wallace.

    • NinersRoc says:

Interesting! I think Baalke has a plan this year that is similar in last year in value shopping, but I think he’s being more aggressive early (smart though) because he’s going to make a big move somewhere. So you might be right about Mike Wallace. However, that would be pretty interesting because we still have Crabtree. At that rate K-Dub will ZERO playing time and there will be an odd man out between the top three. Of course, we’re all watching!

      • Grant Cohn says:

I’m expecting Kyle Williams to be an odd man out when the Niners finally cut down to a 53-man roster in the summer, but I could be wrong.

      • NinersRoc says:

That would be the likely situation, but there’s no way we could pay Crabtree that kind of money as a #2 (and certainly not a #3). That would also be putting a lot of faith in a return guy that didn’t play ball last year (I guess the same argument could be made about Moss).

      • jgwindsor says:

with cox in the fold may be correct about KW

    • MontanaMan16 says:

      That would be great!!!

    • Adam707 says:

What would you estimate our Cap will be after signing Moss, Rogers and assuming Smith signs at 8-10 million?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Hard to tell – we have to wait and see how Rogers’ contract is structured. They could do it in a way where his cap number for 12 is low, maybe around $2 mil. Maybe they could do the same with Smith. Then cut Spencer. They could make a lot more cap space.

      • Adam707 says:

WOuldn’t back loading all our contracts essentially screw us in a couple years? Or would we just restructure later

      • Grant Cohn says:

The salary cap drastically grows in two seasons I believe, so there’s not too much to worry about.

      • msclemons67 says:

In a couple of years the cap goes up a fair chunk. The new TV deals kick in and they’re reported to be 60% higher than the current deals.

      • msclemons67 says:

I need to refresh the page more often.

      • Adam707 says:

O nice. That would be good for them to do that. But i have a feeling we will pick up a middle of the pack WR FA the draft another WR.

    • Brodie2Washington says:

The Raven’s would be happy if we signed Wallace out of their division. They would also be happy if 49er interest in Wallace forced Pittsburgh to re-sign Wallace to a higher contract.

Re your earlier question… I think the 49ers are weaker at wide receiver then they were 48 hours ago. Still, 6M a year is steep so I can see why they let him go.

I’m hoping Hill falls to #30 (though unlikely) or Fleener. Fleener at TE does not fill the position need, but he fills a performance needs like 3rd down and red zone receiving.

    • philly9er says:

If wallace doesn’t sign his tender couldn’t he be signed by a team after the draft for next years pick?

  167. jgwindsor says:

the rogers signing did surprise me a bit….how much cap is left (10 mill now?)….and how much cap do the niners need to set aside for the draft….

still need a rcvr or two and RB and LG ….

although moss is here the offense has not really gotten dangerous……IMO

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Yep! I thought Rodgers was a gonner. I do agree with Grant tho on this one.( I think he said it) He caught wind of the 9ers looking at that other corner and jumped.

      • AES says:

And just maybe C.Rodgers got on board because of the Randy Moss signing? Not only will Rodgers be practicing against Moss (what a challenge!) but if he seriously wants a SB ring, I can’t think of a better team with a better chance of delivering then the 49ers.

  168. Stan says:

The Warriors-just as good -if not better- without Monta..I knew it!..dang they are going to blow the draft pick when Stack Jack joins…

    • Stan says:

The Bucks will soon see a one trick pony…

    • Grant Cohn says:

MTII reports they want to trade Stack Jack again before the deadline.

    • jgwindsor says:

beating the kings is going to affect their draft pick negatively…..can they hold on to their pick or will utah get it

      • Stan says:

My fears realized Grant-this might be a better team without Monta..and if Jackson joins..goodbye suck for seven.

      • Michael says:

If you read John Hollinger, the +/- numbers say the Warriors are better off playing without Ellis anyways. When Curry was playing and Ellis was on the bench, Warriors were positive in all 3 of the previous years. Vice versa, it is all negative points for the past 3 years. Just something to think about.

  169. 23jordan says:

    Grant,

So what kind of game is Alex and his Agent playing? Does Smith really think the Niners are going to adjust their offer? They’ve not done so for anyone else. Why would they do it for him?? With every day that passes, it becomes more interesting. Time to make that call to Josh Johnson. See if he’s ready to be a Niner. So these cats that don’t know your skills in this offense can see
Your work. After all, iron sharpens iron right?

    • Grant Cohn says:

I think Smith wants to wait until Manning and Flynn sign so that he’s the best QB left on the market, and at that point something could happen in his favor. That’s my best guess.

      • Neal says:

You mean in the Niner favor.

      • NickRow says:

At this point, even Chad Henne, Jason Campbell, and Kyle Orton appear more highly rated than Alex Smith. Teams like Seattle, Jets, Jags, Bears, Cowboys, Redskins have shown interest in one or more of these guys. Alex is no sniffing any actio. I say the Niners should tighten the pressure by talking with Flynn, PM, and J. Johnson.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Appear using what criteria?

You are desperate Nick. Give it up. None of those QB’s you mentioned made the playoffs and scored 6TDs and threw 0 Int.

And none of those guys will be back in the playoffs leading their team to their 6th Lombardi trophy. AS will

      • NickRow says:

        DS
The point I’m making is there’s little interest around the league for Alex. The Niner FO is smart to realize that and proceed with negotiations accordingly.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Or Nick.

Perhaps the other teams are not trying because they know AS is not interested. If AS really entered the FA market, he would easily be the second best QB available, and the best one to get if you plan on having that QB be around for more than 2-3 years.

    • jgwindsor says:

josh just got vincent jackson….he is in heaven

    • jgwindsor says:

also i am of the opinion just like last year when AS and JH had a gentleman’s agreement to sign and AS is allowing the team to do its business cap wise …. so AS’s 3yr contract is structured properly…

  170. MontanaMan16 says:

Even tho we tagged Goldson, Other teams can make him offers right? If so, we have to be ready capwise to make a move there dont we? Whats happening there?

    • claude balls says:

If another team signed Goldson, it would have to give two first round picks to the 49ers. That’ll never happen, but if it did, I don’t think the 49ers would be upset.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I thought I read that and I was wondering about them 1st rounders. That would be 3 1st rounders this year? Or how would that work?

    • jgwindsor says:

for two 1st round picks the other team has to give up i think

    • NinersRoc says:

Goldson is not worth more than his tag salary. He’s good, but I don’t think any team is that stupid to pay 7mil+ TWO 1st rounders.

    • msclemons67 says:

The other team would have to give the 49ers two 1st round draft picks.

      I’ll take 2 #1′s for Goldson.

  171. Stan says:

I still can’t beleive Ann Killion just sold out on Cox..shame. The pressure to make Comcast happy cant be that great,Ann.

    • jgwindsor says:

imagined what she may have said if brandon marshall had come here for 2 3rd round picks after his NY club alledged altercation…..

  172. jgwindsor says:

    hmmm nicks, nicks, nicks

  173. jgwindsor says:

what is the interest in brandon loyld….c\

  174. Brotha Tuna says:

I’m idly wondering whether having Goodwin here is any help in attracting Nicks (assuming TB would be willing to go that way). I think Nicks would help the Offense as much as Wallace would. If we lose Rachal AND Snyder then those youngsters better be ready to step up.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Nicks wants to be the highest paid guard in the NFL.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I’m all in on Nicks, he’ll get top dollar, but if there’s a bidding war the Niners probably won’t go there. The top unsigned free agents left are Snyder and Ginn. Snyder should get a decent deal from someone. I don’t think the Niners match. Ginn is another matter, I can’t remember a better 49er return man. He has that rare ability to make the fans hold their breath whenever he returns a kick-off or punt. He seems to be injury prone, that’s his only drawback. The Niners can keep him, I hope they do.

  175. msclemons67 says:

Was Costanzo a good interview? He seems like a decent guy.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Absolutely. He seemed like a real normal, cool guy. He paid for his own college education, and he spoke with a New Jersey accent.
It’s sad he won’t be back next year. Morgan, too. He was really decent.

  176. MontanaMan16 says:

Came in like a lion, going out like a lamb. 3:30 comes early. Later!

  177. Stan says:

  178. Montana Joe says:

    2010 NE/Ten/Min 16 28 393 5

    This guy is good!

    • Montana Joe says:

Notice a pattern here? Moss played almost every game of his entire career with the exception of 6 games. Good stuff, plus a year off could benefit his slightly older body…

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

If he could put up those kind of numbers for 6 or 7 more years he could come near #80. I’m hoping he has a huge chip on his shoulder because of the remarks by Chris Carter.

    • DS94everXev says:

His worse year is better than MC’s worse.

And his best year, he has 11 more TD’s than MC has in his 3 year career.

The guy can make impact plays. Just have to hope he can be a hard worker and block. Our WR’s need to do that. RM never has.

    • Jack Hammer says:

DS, saying of Moss that “His worse year is better than MC’s worse” is false unless you are only looking at TD’s, and even with that MC played 2 fewer games.

Crabtree’s worst season was his rookie year, and his line was:

      11games 48rec 625yards and 2TDs

Moss has been terrific at getting the ball into the end zone throughout his career. I just hope that he can still get it done.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Yes Jack

TDs are the thing that matter more than yards.

And MC only played fewer games because he wanted more money out of college and skipped 4 regular season games. While I was getting all hyped about seeing the best college WR of all time, he was relaxing on his lazy bed sofa choosing scoffing at a contract that would make him millions of dollars.

Get the story straight Jack. There was a reason why MC didn’t play in his rookie year. An objective observer would have noted the reason.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, Given that he was playing in NFL regular season games only 2 weeks after signing I doubt that he was sitting on his lazy boy sofa.

Your lack of college football knowledge got you with this one. Anyone who watched Crabtree play at Tech should have realized that he was more of an underneath catch and run threat than over the top receiver. He benefitted greatly in college fom the gimmick Tech offense which over inflated his numbers.

On another note, Wallace would be a tough get because they are quickly running out of cap space, and if they re-sign Smith I would venture to guess that Wallace is off their radar.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Jack

Did MC receive the highest honor that can be bestowed onto a WR in the whole of college football? Twice?

If AS won any equivalent QB award, I was not aware of it. And if he did, I doubt he won it twice. If you are wondering why I am harder on MC than AS, that is one reason.

So, in my view, MC had the tools and talent to come out and be something truly special. I mean JR and RM didn’t win the award twice, did they? They were great college WR’s and became great NFL WR’s.

And, if you drafted a guy in the top 10, you would get him out there pretty quick yourself. At least I would. Over $30 million for this guy, and you are going wait to see what he can do. And in some ways, MC was better in his rookie year than he has been since. Maybe its my memory playing tricks on me, but I think he actually got open a lot more that year than he has in the two years since combined.

You could very well be right Jack about me being fooled by MC’s college career (I actually never watched it, just heard about it from the “experts” at ESPN). That wouldn’t be a hard thing to do since I don’t know college football at all. But, I find it very disturbing that the NCAA or media or whomever votes for the best WR in college football could be so wrong twice with the same guy.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Yes he did DS, and Tim Tebow won the Heisman too. They both played in gimmicky offenses that helped build up their stats, and unfortunately the awards in college football are mostly based on stats, how else would RGIII win the Heisman over Luck this year?

Crabtree has the tools, but the hold out and foot injuries have slowed his progress. With a full offseason and other weopons around him this might just be his breakout year.

Those “experts” at ESPN are nothing but talking heads who people give credit to as talent evaluators based on their playing careers. How did that work out for Detroit when Millen was the GM?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Jack

Just to be clear, I never cared for the talking heads at ESPN. But, when they are the main source of information, and they cover the draft, you don’t have much choice.

As for Tim Tebow, even I could see him having issues at the NFL level. A QB who runs is an exciting side attraction. 2nd only to the ambulance which pulls up to find all the body parts after that running QB plays against a real defense (Niners).

  179. steelematic says:

We just resigned rodgers. Cox is a backup n insurance in case brown doesnt come back strong from that injury. Spence is gone.Peace Out

  180. NickRow says:

With rumors of Carlos Rogers signing, not sure of it’s impact on the cap, will there be enough left to sign Alex, the rest of our free agents, and draft picks?

–DT Will Tukuafu (EFA): 2 yrs/$1.02 million; 2012 cap: $465,000.

    Franchise player
–S Dashon Goldson (UFA): 1 yr/$6.212 million (guaranteed when signed); 2012 cap: $6.212 million.

    Restricted free agents
–LB Larry Grant (original round tender/7th round): 1 yr/$1.26 million.

so niners have spent 15.5 mill of whatever the cap was….not including rogers and gooden and AS…

so still don’t know how much is left over

    • msclemons67 says:

With the top 51 rule in effect that should leave around $14 million in cap space after Rogers (assuming a $5 million cap hit for Rogers).

Smith and the draft picks should take around $11 million give or take leaving $3 mil to play with.

The team could probably create extra cap space with some cuts and restructures.

    • NickRow says:

Thanks for the info JG and MSClemens

  182. Grant Cohn says:

Mario Manningham is a good option at this point.

  183. tkamb says:

Brandon Lloyd is visiting the 49ers according to Schefter. If we added him that would be a pretty good group with Crabtree, Moss, Lloyd.

    • elGuapo says:

Oh hell yeah!! I like this!! He had some AWESOME one handed snags!! One vs the ‘Hawks and later vs the Giants (even though that one was negated by a holding penalty)!! Word around the camp fire is we wants to come back. This will be a niiiiice addition.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Guap, don’t forget that amazing fully extended diving catch he had during his first go around out here. Think it was against the Rams at The Stick.

      • hightop says:

Yeah maybe he can repeat his patented head duck move too!

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Something happened to Lloyd several years ago, he became indefensible. Maybe he was abducted by aliens or found the juice

    • NickRow says:

Not much speed in that group. Moss may still have something left, but not yet sold on him. I’d suspect the Niners will draft a WR in the 1st round. Now that Rogers is coming back, the need at CB is not as pressing.

  184. Adam707 says:

Taking a look at Lloyd too. Smart move. Very good receiver with an asking price that wont be near a wallace or vjax and he will get the same production in our system as any of them would.

    • exgolfer says:

I like the idea of Lloyd, too. But if the 49ers do sign him, I’ll be wondering why in the hell didn’t they trade for him last year, when teh Rams picked him up. They could’ve used him in the Championship Game.

  185. msclemons67 says:

Lloyd’s agent is Tom Condon (h/t matt barrows). I wonder if this is a little quid pro quo. “We’ll let Lloyd visit to put pressure on the Pats if you come down a bit on Alex’ contract demands”.

  186. Grant Cohn says:

If the Niners had Crabtree, Moss and Lloyd in their wide receiving corps next season, which two would start?

    • elGuapo says:

Ooooo … You pose a dilemma right there, Granty ma’ boy!! But I’d have to go with Lloyd and Moss. I’m COMPELLED to say that!!

    • msclemons67 says:

Lloyd and Crabhands with Moss coming in for 3 wide sets would make the most sense but Moss would freak out and kill a meter maid.

I can’t see Lloyd or Crabs accepting the 3rd spot quietly either.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        It could be high drama.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Crabtree and Lloyd would start, with Moss playing in 3 wide sets and Crabtree sliding inside to the slot.

Gotta get Crabtree inside wher he can move around, find space and run after the catch.

      • rocket says:

Lloyd and Crabs, but I’m thinking there would be a lot of substituting and more 3 WR sets than we saw last season.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Jack

To really run after the catch a WR needs to be able to do at least one of 2 things.

        1. Be really fast. MC is not. His 40 time is not that great, and I’m talking in game 40 time. I don’t remotely care about Combine 40 times.

        2. Have a quick burst. I don’t think MC has this either.

If the WR is fast, then the QB can hit him in stride and he can just outrun defenses.

If the WR has a quick burst, then MC can stop and find a spot in a zone, catch the ball and turn upfield. Since he starts in the stop position, he needs to be able to get up to speed quickly. I have never seen MC do that either.

So, I don’t think he can do either very well. If he did, JH and AS would have found a way to take advantage. Supposedly both are smart guys. Why wouldn’t’ they have found a way to get MC that separation?

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Crabtree was a great college receiver. However, that does not translate to the pros where the corner backs are faster and smarter. I watched both playoff games several times and the when they showed Crabtree he was blanketed. If he pulls his Houdini act during training camp for the 4th time he may get his walking papers.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

I don’t know anything at all about college football, so I can’t say if that is true or not.

What I can say is true is that whenever a camera was on MC, he was covered by an average #1CB. He never got separation, and a HOF QB confirmed what the cameras showed. And about an hour after the game ended and all the immediate emotion had already passed, he said what he said.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        @DS94

George Siefert said that JT was the strongest player pound for pound he ever coached.

    • grimey9er says:

The 2 that have the best preseason/training camp.

    • tkamb says:

I think Crabtree and Lloyd would start with Moss getting into a rotation with Crabtree depending on the play design and if they go to three wide receivers Crabtree would play the slot. Moss doesn’t block well enough to be a starter in our system.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Open competition.

Forget about their contracts. Start who ever is best in TC. Nobody has earned anything as a Niner (none are a Niner Pro-Bowler type skill), so they all need to try hard.

Plus, if we draft a WR and keep KW, you then look at how much each makes. And if there are two similarly skilled WR’s. One makes a lot, the other makes pennies, then you drop the one who makes a lot. Free up cap space to maybe add a late comer FA who was cut in the final cuts before the season starts as an added bonus.

I have my doubts that RM can be a starter. He would have to become a willing good blocker, and keep interested the whole game. As opposed to a situational guy who we bring in, and he does not need to be in the whole time. Also, have to wonder about conditioning towards the end of the year especially.

Of course, I also thought T. Brown sucked at this time last year. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt.

      • NickRow says:

That’s right ‘Open competition’ at QB

      • DS94everXev says:

        @nick

In which AS will kick butt. I agree. Just like open competition at MLB and DE, OLB.

Always have competition. Just don’t expect any pro bowl level talent guys to be replaced by nobodies.

AS will win his job just as assuredly as PW will.

    • Whistleteeth says:

I’d bench Crabtree. In fact I’d cut him. Not even close in my opinion. Crabs is sub par in speed, hands, and making DBs turn there shoulders the wrong way. Hencehe never gets seperation….. then there are his hands and his ego. Personally I really would cut or trade him for a song and some beads.

      • tkamb says:

While his playoff performance was pitiful, he had a pretty good regular season. Just because he isn’t a number 1 guy doesn’t mean he can’t be a good/great number 2.

      • Adam707 says:

Start Crabb and Lloyd. Moss come in for around 20-30 plays a game. Or we would see alot more 3 WR sets and see Crab work the slot and see what he is capable of doing there

      • DS94everXev says:

A good/great #2 WR could still get more than 1 catch against a very average #1CB.

I mean John Taylor was a #2 WR. He could beat a lot of #1 CB’s. And any #2′s.

And MC had a horrible last 7 quarters of the playoffs. In those 7 quarters, he had more drops than catches. And no TD’s. That isn’t good for a #3 WR. Much less a #2.

Besides, why does everybody assume that MC is going to be ok with not being the #1 guy anymore? He held out 1/4 into the regular season because he felt he was robbed of not getting a respectful offer. This is not a guy who is humble.

      • grimey9er says:

Taylor was a #2 cause he played with Rice.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Yes.

And Taylor accpeted it. And actually loved it. He didn’t like the media attention and didn’t care as much about his won stats.

Do you really see MC in the same mold as Taylor? Taylor accepted being #2. Do you really think MC will? If not, then he will be an unhappy player who we are paying a ton of money for.

      • grimey9er says:

If MC gets to produce for a winner yes. Also we didn’t think of #1 and #2 back then it was flanker and split end. Harbaugh would probably say the same thing now.

      • grimey9er says:

JT was SO AWESOME. I saw him play in a charity basketball game. HOPS!

      • DS94everXev says:

JR was the number 1 WR on the Niners. Call it whatever name they want. Every team had to account for JR first and JT second. Few could account for either.

That is the same thing in effect as a #1 and #2

      • DS94everXev says:

Rumored at the time was JT had better hands than JR did. Of course nobody ever confirmed that I don’t think.

Both of those guys were great. JR was the best #1, JT was the best #2. And JM benefited by having both at the same time in their prime. Some guys are just lucky.

      • grimey9er says:

yeah like 9er fans in the 80′s

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

John Taylor and Jerry Rice, the best wide receiver combo in NFL history. In 1989 they had a combined 27 touchdowns between them. They could take 5 yard slants to the house.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

Want to see a WR make a big jump in production from year 2 to year 3? JT is the model. Dwight Clark retired in 1987 (JT’s rookie year), and JT hanged around the edges in 1988, then in 1989, he made his presence known.

    • Ed Luva says:

Nice string. It would be an interesting story to see Lloyd return to the 49ers. He was there for Smith’s rookie season but Smith only played 9 games. Lloyd did turn in 700+ yards though – solid for a season with an uncertain offense. Lloyd really turned it up when he reunited with Ron Turner, his college head coach, in Chicago… so he seems to respond well to good coaching. Lloyd is intriguing but not at a high price. At his age, I expect Moss to rotate in to keep him fresh. Depending on Ginn’s tenure, I would expect 49ers to take a good look at a WR/Returner like Royal because, as much as I’m hoping for the guy, Kyle Williams probably won’t have the returning job this year.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ed

        Some nice thoughts.

But, I don’t want another WR to rotate in. I want a starter guy. Assuming RM isn’t one, this offense needs “A guy” on the outside who plays every down and the defense needs to worry about. That means no doubling VD unless you are doubling the guy, then how many defenders does that leave for the rest of the team?

  187. NickRow says:

Hmmm, so now that Alex is a free agent, which teams are lining up to sign him? Even Chad Henne – that’s right, Chad freakin Henne – is getting more action than Alex Smith. Things could change, but so far not much is happening.

Side note: Meachem signs with the Chargers

    • DS94everXev says:

McNabb, and Kolb especially got a lot more attention last year at this time as well Nick.

AS was way better than all of them combined.

      Your point being?

  188. Adam707 says:

Your bitterness towards MC is getting old fast. Say what you want, I believe this year his play will do the talking. And then you’ll drop this nonsense

    • DS94everXev says:

“Your bitterness towards MC is getting old fast”

Not my fault. I did what I said I would do. He had his year. He stank when it mattered.

      “Say what you want”

      I will.

“I believe this year his play will do the talking”

      It’s about time.

“And then you’ll drop this nonsense”

If he does, you bet I will.

      • DS94everXev says:

I was wrong about TB. I thought he stank big time. Then he turned out to have a very good season. And an ever better postseason.

So, I was wrong about him Adam707. I might be wrong about MC.

I was happy I was wrong about TB. And, I’ll be happy if I am wrong about MC.

  189. old coach says:

rogers is coming back thats huge, its enormous we will be measureably better on d this yr with everyone in their 2nd yr. i kept saying that they wouldnt be signing any big money FA’s they would sign their own and now draft well. i still say it will be fleener

  190. AES says:

Crabtree certainly has his detractors around here and perhaps some of the concerns justified.
But I feel at this point It’s his job to lose. The Moss signing and talk about another WR coming by way of F/A and draft sends a clear signal to Crabtree that he better get his butt to teaming camp on time. And while at training camp he better pit out to best effort of his young career.
I believe he can meet those goals and have a banner 2012 season and beyond.

    • old coach says:

i think smith [if he signs] and crabtree will both have much better yr in their 2nd yr under harbaugh. if they stay healthy

    • OREGONINER says:

      @AES

I think that MC is caught up in the same whirlpool as Alex. I believe that Alex 2011 season redeemed him, and if MC has a breakout year, I think that the fans will embrace him. They both came in with overly high expectations from the fans, and now have to live up to ‘some’ of them. I also think that we as fans have grown up with them. Now, let’s start collecting Lombardis.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Oregon

The main difference between the two is what they have done and how they have done it and what they have said.

If MC acted like AS, I would not be nearly so hard on him.

If AS acted like MC, I would not have defended him.

        Simple as that.

  191. AES says:

    *put out the effort*
    #&$%% blasted! cell phone buttons

    • DS94everXev says:

It’s kind of funny the first way you wrote it AES. I prefer the original. It’s also kind of more accurate. If MC does not do what you say, then he will be in the pits.

I generally agree with everything else. And I’d add that MC needs to look at what JR said about him and take his advice. He needs to be quicker/faster and if losing weight will do the trick, then do it. Even if it sacrifices a bit from his blocking, it is a worthy sacrifice.

  192. Jack Hammer says:

FA Day 2. Here’s to not letting Lloyd leave the building unsigned. Would rather have Wallace, but it looks like his price will be to high.

  193. Sourdough Sam says:

So excited for the Defense gladRogers is back!

  194. old coach says:

drafting well is how consistent winners stay on top. i think thats the 9ers plan. i hope they sign loyd if we get him on the cheap and in that he could’nt find a home on the first day he will end up being a bargin

    • DS94everXev says:

      @old coach

      That would make sense.

But look at the Pats in the past 5 or so years and who they drafted. And how many picks they had. Evidence suggests that you can be a winning team for awhile (5 years I say constitutes awhile) and draft poorly.

The Pats stay on top because of TB and the NFL makes sure TB is protected at all times.

  195. Jack Hammer says:

Those clamoring for Carl Nicks at RG will be unhappy to learn he is now a Buccaneer. Signed for 47.5m according to Schefter.

  196. fesnyc says:

hmmm…not crazy about this Brandon Lloyd visit…i realize he’s now a regular who caught 70 passes last year, but the Brandon Lloyd i remember would rather make one spectacular catch near a sideline and then avoid the next 3 potential catches in traffic. not the kind of guts i think this Niner team needs, or Harbaugh wants. but i’m glad to declare myself wrong if he proves to be the guy who takes the top off the defense and helps us get a SB win. but i’d bet fairly heavily against it.

  197. ninermd says:

It’s funny that I brought Lloyd up awhile ago and got crap for it. Funny how things come full circle. Ha ha haaa

  198. Faithful says:

Lloyd is NOT an upgrade over Morgan. Lloyd has had one and only one decent season as a professional, go check his stats and try to disagree with me:http://www.nfl.com/player/brandonlloyd/2505600/profile . Other then 2010 he’s never even come close to hitting 1k, 733 being the closest back in ’05 with us. People talk about Laurent Robinson being a one year wonder but they should be saying that about Lloyd!

Lloyd has never been known as a great run blocker and Morgan was an excellent one. Lloyd is far better known for his acrobatic circus catches then for anything else, he’s never been consistent. First it would be a mistake to sign him and second if they do and he’s the highest paid receiver then seriously WTF are they thinking at that position?? Moss and then Lloyd, very poor choices IMO.

    • old coach says:

lets wait and see what kind of guarenteed money he gets. if we get him cheap he’s worth a shot

    • claude balls says:

According to the stats you linked, Lloyd had 966 yards receiving last year. That’s close to 1000.

I’m not saying he’s the answer at WR, but let’s at least discuss his career accurately.

      • Faithful says:

True I suppose but that is adding the number from two different teams and you cant just assume he’d have that single total if he stayed in one place.

      • claude balls says:

You’re right. I’d expect him to have a higher total if he stayed in one place.

      • Faithful says:

Based on his career history there would be no reason to have that expectation unless you are basing it off of one season.

      • claude balls says:

There would be a reason to have that expectation if you believe that changing teams mid season would present issues with regard to offensive continuity and QB familiarity. Lloyd luckily avoided half of that problem when he was traded to a team running an offense with which he already was familiar.

Why would you assume he would have a lower total by staying in one place?

The fact is, with the not insignificant exception of his relatively low catch rate, Lloyd put up to 10 WR numbers in in 2010-11. Only Calvin Johnson, Roddy White, Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Wallace and Wes Welker put up better numbers:

        http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/60897/wide-receiver-brandon-lloyd-then-and-now

Look, some guys take longer than others to grow up or to figure out the NFL. The 2012 Brandon Lloyd isn’t the same player as the 2007 Brandon Lloyd. There may be plenty of reasons to be lukewarm on Lloyd, but who he used to be isn’t one of them.

    • ninermd says:

Why hasn’t Morgan been close to 1000 yards?????

  199. Jack Hammer says:

MM reporting that Adam Snyder is visiting Arizona today. Would hate to see him go, especially within the division.

  200. old coach says:

  201. impeachgoodell says:

The post says – Lloyd (6-5, 192 lbs.)
Really? Would be one tall lanky, skinny receiver.
Not to mention the NFL should test him for height enhancing steroids.
When he played for the niners he was barely 6 feet tall, IIRC

  202. NickRow says:

Ted Ginn is scheduled to meet with the Lions. If he goes there, he’ll be their 4th WR. In such a senario, why not saty with the Niners?
