Here’s the transcript of Josh Johnson’s first conference call as a 49er. Enjoy.
Q: What was told to you about what you will be allowed to compete for here at the 49ers?
JOHNSON: We didn’t actually get into the specifics. It wasn’t really that necessary. At quarterback, there’s only one guy out there at a time. It’s really just about getting reps. I was told that I would get reps and an opportunity to continue to develop. The competition is all about performance on the practice field and in the games. It wasn’t important to get into all of that now.
Q: Can you express your feeling about reuniting with Coach Harbaugh?
JOHNSON: I’m super excited just to be a part of this organization. Had a great year last year and I know the success will continue because I’ve played under this coaching staff already. I know what they expect out of the players, details that go into the preparation every week. I’m excited to be a part of that again.
Q: When you heard that Harbaugh became the coach of the Niners last year, did you think that this was going to happen, that you would be reunited with him in San Francisco?
JOHNSON: I knew it was a possibility, but you never know in the NFL so I kind of wanted to play it even keeled – didn’t want to get too high or too low on it, just kind of wanted to play it out and see how it happened. By God’s blessing he brought me back here. It all ended up working out for the better.
Q: After free agency began last Tuesday, how long was it before you heard from Harbaugh?
JOHNSON: They had reached out to my agent to let him know of their interest. There were a lot of other things going on with the whole Manning Situation, so I was just kind of waiting and seeing. My opportunity came in to take a visit. They brought me in yesterday. We finalized the deal last night.
Q: When you look at the offense now for the 49ers, how similar is it to the one you ran at the University of San Diego?
JOHNSON: It’s still a West Coast Offense. Some things have changed – terminology, formations. But I’ve also played in different forms of West Coasts Offenses since I’ve been in the NFL as well. Some things he’s changed since San Diego I’ve actually done in the NFL, so I feel like it’s just about changing over the language in my mind, putting it all back into this offense which I ran in college. Just changing the language over. The concepts are pretty similar to what we did.
Q: Did you throw passes with Harbaugh yesterday?
JOHNSON: No (laughs). No I didn’t.
Q: What did you do?
JOHNSON: I got to see the facilities, meet everyone in the building, talk football with a couple coaches, hang out with the quarterbacks and play a little racquet ball.
Q: Who won the racquet ball game?
JOHNSON: We were all learning how to play. It was my first time.
Q: Is that going to be something you guys do going forward?
JOHNSON: I’m not sure. If that’s what our guys want to do, I’d be down for it. It was a pretty fun experience.
ME: What do you think Harbaugh was trying to accomplish with that?
JOHNSON: Guys just getting to know each other and becoming teammates. The team aspect is more important than anything. We all have to be comfortable with each other. We have to be able to trust one another so we can help one another for this team to be successful.
Q: There were reports that you were meeting with the Redskins this week. What was it that the Niners were bringing to the table that Washington wasn’t?
JOHNSON: I knew what I was getting myself into here, and that was the biggest thing I was looking for out of this free agency. Just wanted to know that when I walked into a situation, when I was told I would be given the opportunity to develop and compete, I knew that would happen. I know Coach has never shot me wrong before. I know it’s all about hard work with him and getting it done on the field. I know that’s what it’s all about here and that’s the kind of guy I am. I just like to prove it on the field, and that’s what he allows you to do.
Q: You mentioned reps in your first answer. There are going to be four quarterbacks in training camp this year. Is there any concern that there are enough reps to go around?
JOHNSON: I’ve been in worse situations. I’ve been in camps where there have been five guys and it ended up working out. It’s just about taking advantage of the opportunities that you get.
Q: Which of your teammates did you meet yesterday? Had you met Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick before?
JOHNSON: No, I just met them yesterday. I met a couple other guys – Ted Ginn. I met Ted Ginn last year actually at a celebrity basketball event in Oakland. Met Anthony Dixon yesterday and Kendall Hunter as well. A lot of new faces, I’m still trying to put names with faces.
Q: Where did you guys play racquet ball?
JOHNSON: I have no clue.
Q: Did Harbaugh play with you guys too?
JOHNSON: Yeah, everyone was playing. He’s pretty good.
ME: Why will you do better here than you did in Tampa Bay?
JOHNSON: Why will I?
ME: Yes, why will you?
JOHNSON: I’m not a future teller, but when I predict things, (when I try to determine) what will give me the best situation to be successful, my college career told me: “Look at what I did playing for these coaches, playing in this offense. I had tremendous success. We won so many games and we accomplished so much as a team. He changed so much in San Diego, and I remember the maturity that I gained from being down there under this coaching staff and how I grew up as an individual and how I grew up as a football player. Why not do that in the pros? Grow up with the same coaching staff I grew up with in college.”
Q: As a player, what was the biggest difference that Harbaugh made in you?
JOHNSON: He showed me how to trust in all my abilities. Coming out of high school my body was still developing so I would kind of doubt myself at times. He showed me how to play the quarterback position with confidence and how to be precise about everything how you can really really play it above the neck – control the game, and then when you use your athletic abilities it’s a plus. There’s a time (and place) to use it. He really showed me a lot about playing the quarterback position.
Q: How did you end up at the University of San Diego?
JOHNSON: I wasn’t recruited largely out of high school. I was a pretty small kid. I was still developing. I was 5-11, 145 lbs. in high school (laughs). Coach (Harbaugh) got the job, and one of the local coaches, Alonzo Carter – they had actually had a conversation about me. (Harbaugh) came and visited me at my high school, Oakland Tech, and we kind of hit it off from there.
Q: Did you know who he was when he visited you?
JOHNSON: Yeah, most definitely. I’ve always been a football junkie – I knew exactly who he was (laughs).
Q: Why do you think you guys hit off that day at Oakland Tech?
JOHNSON: Just our love for the game. It was a mutual thing that brought two different people from two different places together. From the moment I met him I could tell his love of football. He always wanted to talk football and that’s the kind of guy I was.
Q: So you were a walk-on?
JOHNSON: Everyone was a walk-on at our school – we didn’t give scholarships (laughs).

49ers RSS feed
I like this guy. Roman will hopefully design a few plays for him, and maybe not just wildcat plays.
“hang out with the quarterbacks and play a little racquet ball.”
Grant, your role here is to get all of the bloggers together and have a racquet ball game to build team unity and a universal good will here at the blog. Are you up for the challenge?? LOL
It should be bloggers vs. quarterbacks. We could take ‘em! I’ve got more experience than Johnson.
“I’ve got more experience than Johnson.”
GC, you’ll probably be associated longer with the 9ers than he will. LOL
I’ll probably be associated with them longer than Alex Smith will, too.
If you like you job, you better hope so! LOL
It’s the greatest job in the world.
Why haven’t you posted anything about the Niners resigning Ted Ginn? This news broke yesterday!!!!
Grant,
Real Niner fans know that Alex will be gone before Josh. And yes Grant, you’ve got a great job. You do it well. Keep telling it like you see it, right or wrong.
Why are you still here Willy the Welcher?
Really? Alex will be gone before Josh? What is your evidence? JJ’s 5 td’s and 10′s in 5 NFL career games, and a bunch of hype from AS haters? JJ was great in college in Division II, but has he done anything in the pros’? No! If Josh was so great, how come it was sooooo easy to sign him. Convert him to wide receiver where he belongs!
Grant: you are no better than your dad, and both of you should go root for you real favorite team, whichever that team is because it is not the niners.
“Real Niner fans know that Alex will be gone before Josh” – Ha! Real Niner fans know there are a lot of stupid knee jerk reactors out there who write and pose as Niner fans. Go root for the Raiders, as they might believe the crap all you non fans write, including your Grant!
My dad and I don’t root.
“Real Niner fans”
Jordo you’ve been so *unreal* since you’ve been here that no one believes your hyperbole any longer. Now off you go…
“Real Niner fans”
Hahaha. Here we go again.
Look at all the venom from these clowns. The best man will win the Job. You clowns know how fragile Smiths confidence is. You need to twitter him your support. He’s gonna need it. We know how well he does when he faces competition. he throws up on himself.I can’t wait.
@Grant
“My dad and I don’t root.”
That must be a hard thing to do. I am sure the two of you liked playing/watching the game growing up and must have had favorite players/teams.
Then when you become a reporter, all that is pushed aside (at least for the write-up).
Must be hard.
Not for him – he was a boxing fan and a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid. The Dodgers left when he was 11 or 12 and that ruined fandom for him. For me, I grew up the son of a sports columnist, so being a fan was never an option.
Good timing there Adam.
“Venom”
It may be time to revisit the archives so we can blow the dust off of some of Jordo’s all time name calling classless insults. He’s such a jewel in his own mind!
May need to do that…
Jordan,
I haven’t seen much of this kid, and I sincerely hope he’s even half as good as you say he is, but seriously bud, he’s not being viewed as starting material. He signed for little more than the vet minimum and had no place to go. Harbaugh is doing him a favor and hopefully it works out for him, but this kid is not in the running to be a starter.
Agree or disagree, I don’t think anybody would be here if we weren’t fans. This place is like an investment at this point, with the only dividend being a Super Bowl victory.
@Grant
I don’t know… The kid you described, meeting Steve Young, sounded like a fan to me.
My first football memory was Steve Young winning the Super Bowl and I got to meet him sixth months later. I was excited and star struck, but I wasn’t a fan of the Niners.
Grant,
ask your dad if he remembers two of my favorite fighters. If he does remember them ask him what he thought of them.
Donald “the cobra” Curry
Salvador Sanchez
He says Sanchez was an all-time great, and Curry was great when he was great, but he couldn’t take a shot and it affected him later on.
My dad showed me the fight where Sanchez assassinates Wilfredo Gomez on youtube about six months ago. What a fighter.
Both were technicians in the ring…
Tell the rest of us what a real 49er fan is, Jordan.
Grant
you say your dad is a boxing fan. Does he think the puerto rican. Mr Cotto will beat the human garbage bag mayweather? I am a boxing fan. Been in the ring before. Big party’s at my house for Puerto Rican fights. It’s a fading sport but I love the hard work and the mental focus needed.
I’ve watched Cotto fight and he isn’t nearly skilled enough to beat Mayweather in my opinion.
Grant. He’s back from the marga’cheto fight. He did go toe to toe with judda. A good boxer. Cotto isn’t Trinidad. Guy can box he showed that with Mosley when he outboxed him. We will see. It’s going to be better than everyone thinks. When cotto wins mayweather will have to fight manny. Thx for the opinion but it’s been overruled. Lol have a great weekend grant and 9er faithful.
Grant, my Dad was a NY guy and a big Brooklyn Dodger fan. When they left for the West Coast he used to say they took the heart out of the Brooklyn fans.
23J….
What’s the definition of a “real Niner fan”?
Any of you Smithers want to know what a real fan is. You support the team and the players with facts, not infatuation.
All I ever from you cats about Smith, is what he is not. He is not Elite, he is not a pro bowler. He is not Great. Tell me what he is??? He is a below average game
Manager. Flacco is an average game manager. Is Smith better than Flacco? Let’s watch flaccid deal and find out.
Being a real Niner fan is not settling for below average QBing. If JJ is bad, he’s gotta go too. If CK is bad, his Azz is out as well. I’ve never felt like Smith could get it done. As it turns out, the front office finally knows. Real Niner fans, not Smithers. You know who you are. 55niner, Ed luva, if the shoe fits, wear it. If not don’t take it personal.
I can’t throw the ball for Josh. His play will have to speak for itself. He could completely flop for all I know. I do know one thing. The Niners will very soon be moving on from alex Smith. The contract tells the story. I didn’t write it up. The front office did.
Truth of the matter is, the line was short for Smiths and Joshs services. We all know that. My last words on this topic until training camp starts is, “may the best man win”. Based on performance , not salary.
Sounds like a mature level headed young man. I have a good feeling about this signing.
I agree, MauiDave
I’m still hoping for a flat out QB competition and may the best man win… whether it’s Smith, CK7 or Johnson
Don’t forget Tolzien. He looked so good against the 49ers last preseason that he intrigues me. I hope he gets a real opportunity to compete.
Look on Youtube for some college highlights. Pretty decent.
I just hope that Harbaugh will truly pick the best quarterback. After this off-season it’s hard to trust what the guy says.
It sure is nice to have a team (and a coach) that other players want to come to…almost like the old days again!
I think Harbaugh is going to work his magic with this kid…time will tell.
Alex Smith is now the ONLY QB on the Niners NOT hand picked by Jim Harbaugh…
Hmmm? And here I thought Harbaugh gave him a playbook while Alex was an FA during a brief lifting of the lockout. If that ain’t hand picking, I’m not sure what is. Alex coulda signed with the Seahawks with that playbook in hand!
Shhhh!
JH meant to hand it to CK. Just made a blunder. That is all.
Oh ya….I forgot!
There are rumors that Harbaugh came at Alex to give him the playbook. But Alex panicked and rolled right :)
Incumbent. Lockout created. Etc… You know that.
–
JH actually picked the other three from other places and assembled them together here. Smith is not long for this job.
I can respect that prediction and I definitely understand why. I just like the underdog story and I predict he’s gonna surprise you!
Hope so. Argued in his favor many many times. If its to be now, however, it will be due to his superior QB talent rather than god given athletic ability. Is Alex that natural, fluid, QB prodigy? All signs point to No Way… but maybe he can. Glad we weren’t stuck with Shaun Hill & JTO when Harbaugh took the reins, that’s for sure, so it must be given to Alex that he was the best option last year.
Agreed!
When Bill Walsh was GM after Eddie was exiled he brought in his QB Steve Senstrom from Stanford. Didn’t last too long. Not to say that JJ won’t succeed but it’s a different game than college.
Andrew, Walsh also brought in Garcia, a quarterback he saw first hand while coaching against him, and we saw how that worked out too…
Jack, yes he brought in Garcia but Senstrom played for him in college as did JJ with JH.
Andrew, Correct. Interesting thing about that is he brought the both to the 49ers in ’99, and they were the replacements when Young got hurt. When Garcia struggled they tried Stenstrom for a few games then went back to Garcia.
I don’t think any owner, coach or general manager had a better eye for quarterbacks than Bill Walsh.
I have to play Devil’s Advocate here and remind that Bill Walsh preferred Steve Dils over Joe Montana.
JJ is coming into this with a Workman’s Mentality. I like it, and as I said before Competition is always a good thing especially at QB
Video of Josh Johnson working out. Watch his feet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jR5RQbp08Y
Reet, petite, and light on his feet. That other kid look good too, haha!!
To me, it looks alot like Alex’s footwork last year. It’s like they had the same coach or something!
Smith’s feet aren’t as quick as Johnson’s, who’s got some seriously quick feet.
Ya maybe not as quick but the same steps.
Yes, equally precise.
Those are the words I was looking for!
Is Johnson as intelligent as Smith or is the hype all athleticism?
FDM,
You mean the same intellect that had smith sitting on that contract offer until it almost rotted in his lap and exploded in his face. The same intellect that had Jim hopelessly wandering around in Miami for nothing.
So you know, both players graduated from college in 3 years. Both are intelligent.
Why don’t we check the players confidence levels!?!,! Bwahahahaha!
Just ignore him FDM
It takes some practice. But he posts a 100 times a day and it all about hating somebody, so the crash course is over with pretty quickly.
“Why don’t we check the players confidence levels!?!,! Bwahahahaha!”
Or the draft orders. Or the completion percentage. Or the… oh never mind, this is too easy. Like shooting fish in a barrel. ;)
Thank for the link. I like him already! I hope he makes the team.
Speaking of making the team. This team looks seriously loaded. Last year the 49ers needed rookies out of the draft and players who hadn’t started or had to switch positions to contribute. This team has almost none of that.
Grant, how many of the rookies out of this draft will make the team? Who is on the team presently who is on the bubble to be knocked off by a rookie?
Great question. Off the top of my head, the bubble players are Anthony Dixon, Parys Haralson, Kyle Williams and Joe Hastings. I think four to six rookies will make the team.
Grant
Thanks for the link. Here’s an article on Theder to go with the link:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/11/13/DD3G1LS4D8.DTL
More from Theder (on whether Colin or Josh could beat out Alex Smith):
“I think both of them could, yes,” Theder said. “I think they’re both very talented — much more talented than Alex. I’m an Alex Smith fan. I just think Colin and Josh are both very, very talented kids.”
Do you think there is a little bias there since he trained CK and JJ during their H.S. days? As always, a good read by EB but we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out…
Grant;
I dont know if anyone else has posted this but the 49ers lost a 3rd and 5th round picks for violations ten years ago, are those compensotary picks or regular picks and will this change the way they draft in the 1st two rounds?
That was, as you pointed out, ten years ago for cap violations. What effect could it have on this years draft? I must be missing something.
ok just rewinded it on my DVR and ur right they were talking about picks taken away since 1980, just wasnt paying too much attention to it, reading post on blog! Lol!!
Someone at work was asking me why the 9ers were going to lose their 3rd and 5th round pick this year and I didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. This must’ve been it.
They lost a draft pick to the Bears over Lance Briggs. Basically over he said, she said. Made Niners look like real chumps. Showed how much juice the East Coast bias has.
Dang man, don’t scare me like that.
If the best man wins the job, and thats what the haters wanted all along, is it fair to say that if AS wins the job in training camp, that the usual suspects will shut their mouth? Of course not. Just watch!
True.
They will then use JJ excuses to explain why he is not the opening game starter.
But it will be up to JH, who’s JJ’s boy and who brought him in, so if they dont trust JH, then what’s the real agenda?
@FDM
The only “agenda” I care for, and I am sure the Niners as well…is to WIN!
All these other agendas..I couldn’t care less about any of them.
FDM, Even how many Superbowl Championship alex wins for the 49ers, the Haters and trolls arn’t going to back off. They’ll still be here to bash and call Alex names.. Guys like 23Jordan, Bay, Nick row and Tim are always will have something bad to say about A. Smith..lol
You mean if the Defense and Special Teams carry us to a Super Bowl win, will be back off on our critique of Alex? Hell no.
Do you think Dilfer and Grossman are elite QBs? They were both carried to SB victories by strong defenses. That’s the only way AS wins a Super Bowl unless he transforms himself from game manager to game changer.
When did Grossman get carried to a SB victory? I remember him losing to the Colts!
How about Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon? Were they elite QB’s at 27 years old. No, matter of fact they probably weren’t as good as Alex then. But then one day the right coach came around and I don’t know if they became elite but they became pretty dang good. Had that coach come along when they were 27 they may have went to more SB’s. Ironically, those coaches installed the WCO that they shined in. Steve Young is another one that wasn’t all that great till he got the right coach and the right system. I don’t know why everybody (haters) think it cant be done….History tells us it can be!
It can be done, that’s why I put the disclaimer ‘unless he transforms himself from game manager to game changer.’
Jim Plunkett.
As the saying goes haters keep hatin, if Smith won 4 super bowls they still wouldn’t like him.
I would!..but,no who’s better, Smith or Montana?…not from me.
@Stan
If AS wins 4 Super Bowls (especially if he is 4-0), he will be better than SY was. No doubt about that.
And considering AS age and the rules favoring protecting the QB a lot more now than they did in JM or SY day, it isn’t impossible for AS to get those 4.
AAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.
Alex Smith is a loser, and a bust. You done hitched your ride to the wrong horse there, son. But then again, you want him to be your husband, not the 49ers QB.
@nobody
Because that is who you are. A nobody.
Nobody knows you because…you’re a nobody.
Nobody. That is who loves you.
Nobody is going to wonder where you are late at night because nobody cares.
Nobody. That’s you.
Ds, Nobody might be 23Jordan himself ! lol
@rickey
I know. The reply is quite fitting for him as well.
How about it Grant? Who was this loser?
It’s not Jordan – different IP. It must be a fruit fly.
Thanks for the answer Grant.
But fruit flies are priceless. The studies and scientific data to help understand a great many things would never have hapened without them.
“Nobody” is not worthy of such praise of comparison.
Good point.
But DS,just because he or anyone acts like an arse is no reason for you to lower yourself to their level. Show your class and it will simply make the ones calling names seem even more classless .
If we all act like adults we can actually have some fun and productive conversations and we might all just learn a thing or two from each other.
I don’t know, Tim. I was rather looking forward to more of DS’s Drosophila digression.
@Tim
Nobody was talking about having him as my husband and a bunch of stupid stuff like that.
I just brought up some nice facts about somebody who is too scared to even have a name.
@max
Where have you been man? Crab15 was asking about you the other day. Have you been enjoying watching some of those TV shows on youtube? I’ve found netflix to also be a real bargain. $8 for all the movies/shows they have. And, they have a lot.
Love to talk more about Drosophila, but not the right place to do so. Pretty cool you know the other name for fruit fly.
@DS: Thanks! And please extend my thanks to Crab15, too. I did post a tongue-in-cheek comment in response to one of yours some days ago. I very much got a kick out of your – inadvertent? – pun on the movie-making team, the Coen brothers, which you very cleverly if inadvertently spelled “Cohn brothers.” (I tend to be late in coming to the blog, so more often than not wind up burying my two cents worth between our colleagues’ numerous and more promptly-posted comments.) Yes, I suppose you’re right about this not being the place for fruit fly talk. But you might enjoy this anecdote: Remember the PBS commentator, David Suzuki? Before he was a TV guy, he was a world-renowned geneticist. Many years ago I was observing work late at night in a lab across from the one he and his team happened to be working in. (A friend of mine, a neuropharmacologist, was trying to establish the presence of a particular neurotransmitter (serotonin) along the LCSTs (lateral-cortico-spinal tracts) in cats pre-addicted to heroine – and therein lies another story for another day.) Suddenly, a huge uproar – yelling, clapping, cheering – came from Suzuki’s lab. Turns out his team had just discovered and confirmed another Drosophila mutation. Okay, fine, good for them, right? But the big kicker was: they’d PREDICTED its existence months earlier! Gee, the things people get worked up over, eh? Yeah, I subscribed to Netflix for another month and, you’re right, have watched a number of good movies and documentaries there. So far, Niners are lookin’ good for the upcoming season. Sure hope we can get Fleener. Thanks again.
I asked him/her the other day what he/she preferred to be called: Dot? Spot? Point? Period? Smudge on my monitor?
Never did get an answer.
Lot’s of jokes to be had in the future.
Get to the point, Point.
I disagree with you, Period. Period.
How do you feel about pointillist painters?
See Spot run. See Spot hide.
I can see some rather crude jokes with regard to ellipses but I won’t go there. :P
@Max
I can’t believe I mis-spelled their name. I even looked it up and copied/pasted it! Guess the original writer of that writing didn’t know either.
Yes. I remember Dr. Suzuki. I even wrote the guy a letter once and he replied! This was before the age of email. I saw this special on PBS back in 1994 I think it was. About genetics and what it can do/where it can lead, etc, and he hosted it. I think it was a mini-series that went on for a week on PBS.
“Gee, the things people get worked up over, eh? ”
The fact is that if you are a scientist you are wrong like…all the time. You hardly get anything right. I’m talking the real big important things. Not small stuff. So, if you predicted something that actually ends up happening, you are ecstatic. If you don’t, well that is normal and you move on (assuming you don’t lose your job because you were wrong). You need to have either a huge ego so that it can take the pounding of always failing, or no ego so that failure has no impact on you. If you are in-between, I don’t know how you can do it.
With the draft thing, I have no idea. I will just cheer whomever we get and be fine with it. I tried the draft thing before, and really stank at it.
Check in more often. This place can use some fun/critical/thought provoking material without the bad stuff thrown in.
I can see if Alex gets hurt..you want a vet like Johnson for a raw soph like CK.
I’m not even sure why everybodys a twitter. Three QB’S? So?
Grant is #1 Alex Smith haters ! Big time… lol
Ya think!
No, just the Smithers…whoever they are! lol
Mythical creatures that roam the redwoods. :P
That would be the “Elvish Woods” Adam.
Smithish Woods I would think, in this case, DS.
And if you were from the general region you might be called a Smithlander.
Now a cool thing might be of the region had a museum. The easy choice there would be for it to be called the… Smithsonian!
I’m on a roll, someone slap me with a dead fish.
That’s cruel and unusual punishment to the dead fish.
Why is a raider fan commenting on this blog? And better yet why are any of you posting with this east bay loser?
I could have sworn that it was made known to Josh that he was not coming in to be the starter. He was getting an opportunity to make the team but Smith was the starter. Thought he even said as much. This “debate” (about as much debate as Skip Bayless and Steven A Smith yelling at each other for 2 hours) on here about Johnson taking Smiths starting spot is a just idiotic.
That is all.
No,JJ said there was nothing said about starting or not starting etc, only that he would get a chance at reps and a chance to continue to get better and compete.Something he couldn’t get with the Bucks because Freeman is their long term guy and we don’t have a long term, guy just yet.
Ted Ginn is hanging around the facility? Mildly interesting……. As to Josh, he and JH know what they’re getting. I’ll trust Jim’s thinking.
Ted Ginn just signed a one year deal so we should all hope he’s there.
Thanks MJ. Missed that among all the rough-housing here and the Tebowing on Nat’l Press.
CDavis of NFL Net came out today with his updated mock draft and he states ALuck is the obvious #1. Missing from his 1st round mock is CFleener. He has the 9ers taking SHill with the #30 pick. I respect (and like) CDavis but I think CF would be a better choice there between the two. Interesting…
He has been consistently rated as a 2nd round pick throughout the process. People expected him to run well.
During the Stanford pro day yesterday, both ESPN and NFL Net were saying he upped his draft status to the first round. He was borderline #1 and now he is a legit #1 according to most analysts.
He has consistently been rated as a 2nd round selection, so maybe he slips into the 1st, but that doesn’t mean that he has been valued as a first round talent during the process. He hasn’t been. It doesn’t matter to me, I’m just stating where he was seen as going before he ran a 4.50 in his underwear.
With his ankle problem, who knows,he might slip to us ?
I really like CF. He has a bit of WR wiggle. He’s big, fast and can adjust to the ball in the air. Hill looks good, but I’d rather have CF.
Evan Silva from PFT just updated his today and had RG3 at #1 and Fleener at 29 to the Ravens and us taking Boise St RB Doug Martin. I can’t wait for the draft!
Montana, I’m with you there…time for the draft!
So JJ is saying “it wasn’t really that necessary” to know if he will be allowed to compete for the starting QB position? Really Josh? C’mon man!
That’s not the answer I was hoping for.
Could it be one of these scenarios?
1. Maybe Harbaugh/Baalke asked JJ to keep it tight-lipped.
2. JJ did not ask common sense questions to Baalke/Harbaugh.
3. JJ’s agent has no business being an NFL agent.
4. JJ is not being totally honest.
5. JJ does not have the relentless competitive desire and confidence to be a starting NFL QB this season.
I thought it was comical, but at least Alex Smith had the courage to say “he would relish the opportunity to compete for the starting QB job with Peyton Manning.”
Alex has shown more guts than JJ this week.
He didn’t say much because they gave him a shot to make the team and nothing more. Nothing needs to be promised to someone without options which is where JJ is at. The guy wants a job and Harbaugh has given him a chance. That’s it.
He probably could have been Robert Griffin’s backup in Washington.
Or perhaps the with Jags. Better option than TT who they were coveting and BGabbert is really raw. I know they signed Henne but JJ offers a different skill set.
Bs,
You clowns keep saying Amith took us to the NFC championship game. What do the experts say.
He was a free agent and NOBODY wanted him. He’s been our problem for the last 7 years. He has an average year and hes still our problem. He hit free agency and what did he get??? Crickets. Thank god we won’t be stuck with Alex much longer.
If we didn’t need Peyton, why did we go after him. Why did we not up that offer to Smith for 2 months? Why is his contract a series of 1 year deals?? Alex is finished. It’s put up or shut up time. He has no value in this league. Josh is about to make alex a backup! A career backup!
Jordo, any new news? Now off you go…
Rocket,
You sound irrational like Hofer. Josh is just as intelligent as Smith. He doesn’t make stupid remarks. He knows that the real talking is done with his play. He does not lack confidence like Alex. He’s from Oakland, he grew up in a different environment. He does not need his pads slapped before every practice. He does not need anyone to lie to Jim about his ability. He knows what he can do. And you will soon.
Jordo, OK you win everything you’ve said is TRUE. Now will you post something different? The draft? Anything else?
Who is THE Welcher?
23J!!
“You clowns keep saying Amith took us to the NFC championship game. What do the experts say. What do the experts say.”
Ummm… funny you should ask that. Tory Holt said that same exact thing this morning on NFL Net. Sapp and Irvin were right there with him. Took us to the NFC Championship game.
Those would be the experts you’re looking for, Jordy.
Side bar – Tory’s looking good these days! Fit, looks like he could still suit up. Spiffy glasses too.
Adam, REisen said the same thing a few days ago. Now the 9ers have a legit NFL ready backup in JJ.
Grant, He would have competed with Rex Grossman and John Beck for a spot behing Griffin in Washington.
A competition he would have won, in my opinion, because Grossman and Beck are horrible.
They all say it, man. Even during the season, the commentators were all about how much better he was looking, good throws, blah blah blah, etc.
All this other stuff is ego-driven agenda. Some people just can’t stand the guy, won’t look at rational explanations why things happened in his career. It’s a matter of: For now we see through a glass, darkly. Thought I’d throw that in there for Tim. :P
Too much drama for me. Silly.
Wish the draft would get here soon.
The fact is that JJ was never going to get a shot at starting in Tampa because Freeman is their long term Franchise QB,period! Here he knows he will get a fair shot and that Alex is not exactly believed in here like Freeman is in Tampa. Alex is getting his shot to show dramatic improvement and earn the job long term, but CK and JJ will also be coached up and given a fair shake to win the job, wheather it be this year or next . The Niners are seeking an upgrade over what alex gave them last year,NO doubt ! Wheather or not Alex can become that upgrade himself is a question only Alex can answer on the field. Right NOW Alex is THE man…but JJ knows he will get a fair chance to make the team and then if he can show enough to win the starting spot, same for Kaep.
I will be sorry to see Tolzien go,if it works out that way.
Jordan,
YOU’RE calling Rocket irrational? Oh, brother now I’ve heard everything. Rocket is one of the most objective posters here.
You calling Rocket irrational is like Paris Hilton calling J. J. Abrams a no talent.
Adam says: “Those would be the experts you’re looking for, Jordy.”
Well, the real experts – the guys who run the other 31 NFL teams – didn’t seem to think of Alex as a guy who took his team to a championship game.
In fact, the 49ers’ front office didn’t seem to feel that way either.
Alex Smith was treated better than Dilfer but not a lot better. It seems the people who actually work in the NFL saw a QB who was carried.
“Well, the real experts – the guys who run the other 31 NFL teams – didn’t seem to think of Alex as a guy who took his team to a championship game.”
I have no idea what they thought of him. I mean he obviously doesn’t cause the frenzy that Manning does. The other thing is, like the commentators were talking about, there were basically no seats left at the table by the time Smith finally got out there and started looking around.
For whatever reason, he and his agent waited five days to test the waters. I don’t know what that means. Could be that they knew he was going to be back in SF or that the Mayan calendar is right and we’re all dead in December. :P
Who knows. And these people all speak double-talk so they can’t be believed anyway, so what’s the point.
I’d say the real experts also include the guys who played at this level. They know a thing or two.
@Crab
You’re thinking too much here.
If JJ did as you hoped he would be an outcast upon day 1.
Nobody knows you (players) and you come and say you are going to take down the guy everybody rallied around last year? The guy who got the team to the title game?
And all you have are some really weak stats/draft position in your corner?
Not smart.
Crabs,
You can’t come to the 49ers and ruffle the feathers of the confidence lacking starting QB. Josh is smarter than that. Alex is a basketcase and so are these clowns that want to give h a starting job. He will have to beat Josh out to get it. Josh just got here.
Let me ask
You this. What do you think the players on the team are saying to each other about Smiths contract and this move. If Josh can’t beat Alex out of this job, he dies not deserve to be here. I just hope the QB that plays the best in training camp and pre season gets the job. May the best man win. Congratulations Josh.
Listen to VD this morning on KNBR and you’ll get the consensus of the team from him directly. Next.
23J – I agree, the QB who performs the best in training camp & pre-season should start. If they play at an equal level than Alex should start.
Obviously Alex Smith clearly deserves to be the starter at this point. I thought he had a good year but didn’t play well at the end of the NFC Championship. Alex was definitely not the reason we lost though.
I was disappointed that JJ didn’t man up and say his goal was to be the starting QB. Show your team & Niner fans that you believe in your ablities. Why not say it?
If Alex says it, the Smith diehards (spin doctors)praise how confident he is.
23J, the spin doctors will continue their AS propaganda but the spin stops here!
However, if/when AS is on the field I will pull for him. If he does well I will praise him and if he sucks I will speak it.
@23Jordan, what makes you so sure that your boy JJ will be a starter? You don’t get it, the reason why they brought JJ is because, harbaugh wants a career back up expertie, just in case. They were lucky last season that their starting QB didn’t get hurt.
Harbaugh and baalke realized, they don’t want tobe in a position, to get short handed. Your imagination is up your to a.s.s than your little brain. If you can’t understand what i am trying to tell you.. Just sell POP CORNS ! thats what you’re good off..lol !
“but the spin stops here!”
That gives me chills. As if O’Reilly isn’t a Spin Doctor all his own. :P
Congratulation josh ! You’re a deluusional individual, don’t forget to take medication..
Keep posting your stupid comments troll..lol
You call them scenarios and I call them Joshexcuses! Roll ‘em out!
We need to shorten it otherwise it’s going to be too cumbersome to type all season long.
How about: Joshcuse? You have to kinda say it fast, it’s awkward! :P
Poor Jordy, he’s so invested in being right. I hope for his sake he is right, otherwise it’s going to be another miserable season for him. :P
Jordan,
He signed for little more than the vet minimum. He was replaced by Dan Orlovsky in TB before he had even signed elsewhere. He had one visit besides the Niners in Washington where he would have been #3 behind RGIII and Grossman if he even made the team.
Now knowing that information, why would it be irrational to say what I said? Harbaugh threw him a bone at low money to come in and try to make the roster. I don’t hate the kid, don’t even know much about him, but the deal they gave him and the lack of interest around the league tells me this guy is not a given to make the team and at best will be a backup. If he does better than that, good for him, but it’s obvious know one expects much out of him.
He probably beg harbaugh to give him a chance to be a back up, washington wasn’t interested on JJ…lol
Unbelievable with this bone ideas 23jordan comes up with…Maybe he has the inside source with the raiders…lol
Rocket,
There you go again, putting facts in between Jordan and his fantasies.
Jordan is climbing way out on a limb on JJ. It’s a classic win-win situation. If JJ can unseat Smith, that’s great, the 49ers have been upgraded at QB. The only downside is this blog will jammed up with Jordan’s endless droning about how he was right about JJ, and AS, all along, etc. [big deal, even a stopped clock is right twice a day].
If the 49ers use JJ as backup, or worse, cut him, Jordan’s branch will snap and he’ll plummet to the ground and splatter all over the place. Of course, Jordan will just pretend nothing ever happened and keep ripping Smith.
Rocket,
You need to investigate the situation before you make an argument. Josh Johnson would’ve been here last year if we could’ve gotten Tampa Bay to trade him to us last year. They wouldn’t. I hope you remember that. They wouldn’t trade Josh to anyone. They thought they were a playoff caliber team. They didn’t want to lose a capable backup in case Freeman got hurt.
Josh elected not to sign with Tampa Bay because he felt like he wasn’t given a fair shot to win a starting position there with Freeman in place. For obvious reasons(Freeman 1st round pick, getting paid a ton) He didn’t lose the backup job in Tampa, he didn’t want it. He didn’t get replaced. He turned that job down. You know who Orlovsky is. Don’t riddle me with him.
Allen, the GM in Washington, drafted Josh Johnson in the first place. He invited Josh for a visit and then Washington gave Grossman a 1 year deal. Josh couldve sined and competed fot that job in Washington. Why do that when you have a chance to compete in an offense that you know in your sleep. A coaching staff that you’ve flourished with. You sound like a fool if you think he wasn’t going to make the team.
Josh didn’t start in Tampa Bay, but he did play in packages in their offense. He also played decently in 2 games this past season. Josh got a 2 year $2 million deal. A $350,000 signing bonus. He will make this roster, guarenteed. I’m willing to bet you that. How much??
When did Jim Harbaugh start throwing out bones? You sound like a hypocrite now. You can’t have it both ways. Who else has he thrown a bone to? We know this signing could affect Kap. Why would JH risk that.
JH gives players a chance to compete for jobs. We both know that. We saw that last year.
Your posts tell me that you don’t know much about him. Now take some time to look into him and you may formulate a different opinion. Your factless post full of speculation and admitting you don’t know much about him is not normally your style. You usually post with sound logic and not speculation. You’re admitting that you didn’t do your homework this time. Maybe you should before you post this nonsense.
I’ll bet you $1000 that Josh makes this roster and you will believe he should. I have paypal and I’m sure you do as well. We can send the $$$ to Grant and see what happens.
It certainly sounds like you know what to expect from him. I’m through speaking on him. His play will tell you who he is. Like Smith’s play told us what he wasn’t. A franchise QB.
EX,
Would you like to make a wajer that Josh Johnson will make this roster and you will be impressed with his play if you can put your bias aside?
Whatever you like? Let me know. I will let JJ show you who he is and what his game is like.
Ex,
I meant wager.
Ricky,
You sadly sound a lot like Oneniner. You don’t want that label. Sounds like you may be too old to be such an uninformed fellow. Maybe you’re losing your mind a little. Backing your arguments up with facts are usually what works up here. You don’t appear to have any information. Just want to argue about Smith.
Smith is who we thought he was. This off season has shown everyone up here all we need to know about Smith. Regardless to what you all think. Smith lost all that support and confidence JH threw behind him last year.
Why is Smith’s deal structured in the fashion in which it is?
Why did he get no interest in free agency?
Why is he about to be that career backup you speak about?
I’ll tell you what happened. JH took a real good look at Smith’s decision making in all the games this year. All the plays that were left on the field. Those are Smiths words. “We left a lot out there.” Smith had that to say after almost every game. Win or lose, the same statement from Smith after the games.
Face the truth. At some oint this season, you will have no choice. This is a copcat leauge. The Giants showed everyone how to stop Alex Smith. he league knows now. Change is coming old man!
Jordo, what label do you have at this point. You’ve called people here all kinds of snide classless comments and then you try to call them out for having an opinion that differs with yours which is typically incorrect based on history. WHAT’S YOUR DEAL??!
Geez
And people think I have long rambling posts.
@DS that screed only took me three thumb swipes to get past.
Yours take at least 4.
:-D
*ducking*
Actually took me 4 to get thru that msc.
maybe your just really good at moving your fingers around.
Jordan,
You seem to have a lot to say about a QB who hasn’t played much and hasn’t been very impressive when he has. This seems to be your latest anti Smith stab in the dark at QB. I’m guessing you are basing this latest take on a few YouTube videos you saw or the stats you looked up for him while at San Diego. That would have to be it, because he’s done so little in his pro career there is nothing to warrant this view of him you have. So you are expecting the JJ who put up the big numbers in Division II Football? Please tell me you aren’t that far down the Smith hate trail that you have that kind of delusion of grandeur.
I did admit I haven’t seen much of Johnson, and you know why? Because he’s hardly played in 4 years. The times he has played, his completion percentage is terrible, he’s thrown twice as many picks as TD’s, and he barely registered on anyone’s radar as an UFA this offseason, until finally signing for Vet Minimum level money with his old Coach from San Diego.
It’s posts like this that really puzzle me Jordan. You are desperate to get rid of Smith, but you are praising a guy who has barely played and really not played well when he has. You did the same thing with Troy Smith. You can’t stand a QB who put up a 90+ rating and won 14 games, yet you are willing to hand the team over to a guy who’s numbers make Smith look like Montana.
I don’t get you. I have no idea what your motivation is or where you get the idea that guys who have done nothing but suck when they get a chance, are somehow a better option for us. I hope Johnson has something and wins a spot. That helps us as a team, but for you to throw all these accolades at a player with his lack of resume is nonsensical to me.
I’m not going to bet you. That’s not my thing, especially when I have seen how you respond when you lose. What I will do is keep tabs on this as we go forward and see just how disingenous you get in your view of the QB competition. I think your bias has completely taken over on this one.
Rocket,
I’ve seen Josh Johnson play several times as a pro. I saw both of his games last season. We scored 49 points sgainst Tampa. I guess that tells you how great their defense was. I’ve got NFL rewind. That was how I’ve seen all of his starts. The int -td ratio don’t tell the real story.
I’ll allow his play to speak for itself. I criticize our QB because he is below average as far as I’m concerned. He did not win 14 games. The team won 14 games and his contribution to most of those wins were minimal.
I didn’t think you would bet. You will see Johnsons game and then we can have another chat. May the best man win the job. If Johnson outplays Smith, I hope he gets the job.
I got what I wanted, what Josh wanted. A chance to compete. And that he will. I rest my case.
Rocket,
Give Johnson a clean slate in this offense like you wanted to give Alex a clean slate in this offense. Hopefull every 49er fan will be able to
Do that. They certainly did it for Alex. Joshs other numbers don’t look too bad compared to Smiths before last season.
This is a new year and a new team. Let’s see what happens. Go Niners!
“We scored 49 points sgainst Tampa. I guess that tells you how great their defense was.”
So are you saying a defense has to carry JJ?
@rocket
One word describes 23J
hater
@Adam
Remember back to the blog after that game against Tampa? By Friday of that week, I swear it was as if the Niners had lost by 46 points.
That is where the haters really proved themselves to be haters. That whole week was so full of hate against anything and everything (except any QB not named AS) that it really showed me that this was more than just an ego thing (I need to always be right) thing. This is who they are.
Crab we all know its the NFL and its all about what you have done for me lately so evey position in the team can change depending on the performance of the players. GO NINERS
This mock draft has the Niners taking Fleener: http://www.drafttek.com/CMDRound1_17-32.asp
I can’t see him falling to that far. Not with everyone looking for that freak TE these days to take advantage of the rules that have basically neutered defenses.
Then who do you think will draft him?
Maybe Seattle trades back a few spots to take him and stack up an extra pick. This site states their interest and even references Grant’s statement of the 49ers interest.
http://seattle.sbnation.com/2012/3/22/2895801/2012-nfl-draft-seattle-seahawks-coby-fleener
Dang it Grant! Now you and Maiocco are feeding the enemy! ; )
Many mock drafts have CF going in the second. IMO he can go mid to late 20′s. Would the 49ers move up for him? They have to be looking at right guard at their spot. There’s a much better chance of that position falling in the draft than a receiver that is moving up being there. JH likes the Beef.
Don Banks has him going #25 to denver…
“The Broncos landed themselves a starting quarterback in free agency, and I bet it would make him happy to get a young, play-making weapon like Fleener in the first round. Fleener further impressed NFL scouts with a stellar pro day showing this week, and he has emerged as the draft’s clear-cut top tight end prospect.”

Hate to see CF go there. DClark is a FA and could end up with his former QB as well.
That’s out of date because the Broncos just signed two tight ends today – Joel Dressen and Jacob Tamme. They’d draft Kendall Wright over Coby Fleener, I’m sure.
tree, Fleener won’t be going to Denver. They just picked up 2 TE’s today in Free Agency, signing Joel Dreesen from the Texans, and Jacob Tamme from the Colts.
Denver has signed two TE’s today. Joel Dreessen and Jacob Tamme. Although that does not preclude them from selecting Fleener, it certainly makes it less probable.
Yeah, heard that. Tamme played with PM but Dreessen is avg so who knows…
They also now have 5 TE’s on their roster. They will be going WR in round 1 most likely.
Well Tamme was completely unheard of until Manning got ahold of him. Dressen has talent and Manning will use him!
Tamme was a smart signing by the Broncos. When Clark was injured Tamme stepped in and the Colts didn’t miss a beat.
I hope it works out that way! I don’t know who would be the absolute best choice for the 49ers at the 30th spot, but from a personal point of view I would love to get the chance to continue watching Fleener play.
Baalke will surprise us all again I bet. We might even see a defensive player picked. The team is old at a couple of key positions on D and a bunch of guys will be free agents in 2013.
At this point he could grab a kicker in round 1 and I would say “well, he knows what he’s doing.”
MSC, agreed. DL or CB could easily be the pick.
Alex smalix, geesh. Lets drop it already. The dude was our number 1 pick, we still have him, and he is still our starter. JJ isnt going to b our starter this year, and CK is a better athlete. How bout Randle, or Stephen Hill. Our gaurd possibilities. Our schedule. The additions of Moss and Manningham. Whos going to replace Gore in 2-3 years. Ect, ect. ect. I understand Alex isnt Joe Montana, but who in the F@ck is? Every blog is about Alex. Lets see how this season goes 1st. Im excited about our new members and keeping the d intact. Alex smalex. jeesus
Rick, don’t take it seriously. I’m listening to KNBR and they are also saying that CK is probably feeling tweaked over this JJ signing. Just enjoy the debate! lol
Now CK is sensitive too? KNBR sure has a high sensitivity for 49er feelings…
Although, any 49er girls could cry on my shoulder…Stan will listen..
Stan, you are pure GENIUS!!!
I never get tired of hearing that..lol..next time start with “Super”..
Super, you are pure genius.
I’m starting to like you, Stan. You’re growing on me.
I certainly liked the way JJ came across in the conference call. Seems thoughtful. I like that he’s a self-described “football junkie.” AS is the starter. JJ and CK might compete for No. 2, that is, who would be most ready to come in should something happen to AS in a game this year (stop crossing your fingers, haters!), but my guess is HarBaalke see CK as the future. It’s just really nice to have smart, athletic backups at the ready. And I’m amazed by the reports of what we got Manningham for. WOW. Can’t wait for the draft!
Don’t mind the man one bit. Just wonder what this thing is all about. Smells like a trade. I also wonder if he’s any good at this level. 40%+ completion rate is in Tebow range and unless this guy can be a human cannonball (like Tebow) then it leaves me a bit perplexed.
Pre-season should be fun to watch anyway. Most dislike exhibition games but I always like to see the effort the guys put in who are trying to make the team. No mailing it in, they’re all trying hard.
Another perspective to consider is that Alex may have to learn a somewhat ‘tweaked’ offensive system.
Last year Harbaugh catered the offensive system to fit Alex’ strengths and flaws. With the signings of Moss, Manningham, and perhaps a speedster from the draft, the offense will likely take on a more aggressive approach. Alex will need to take more risks then he did last year. We are not signing speed receivers to run 15 – 20 yard routes.
Alex’ biggest challenge in TC will be to prove that he can consistently make the long pass with accuracy. Last years offense was a safe low risk offense. The 2012 offense will be more open and Alex will need to deliver.
I think you’re reaching. We have a full off season this year and even JJ says its quite a bit different then when Harbs coached him. Why does everyone think the long ball has to be consistantly accurate? Nobody does that! Part of the key to it is that you do it. Complete or incomplete, it tells the defense that its there and softens them up a bit. The safeties cant start creeping up closer.
Without looking up stats or anything the most accurate long ball throwers seemed to have Moss on the recieving end tho!
Montana, I understand your thinking and speed receivers can keep defenses from stacking the box.
But my line of thinking is that the offense will be ‘tweaked’ as opposed to a total transformation.
Also, the defense will not feel threatened if Alex misfires on 70-80% of long throws. He will need to connect on at least 30% for defenses to respect the long ball. I don’t recall Alex particularly being under heavy pressure in the championship game when he misfired on a sure TD to a wide opened KW about 40 yrds down-field. These types of throws will now undoubtedly increase during games. That is why I feel Alex will see a ‘tweaked’ offense this season, and yes, he will need to show that he can make the long pass (maybe not consistently) at least at a respectable clip.
I agree with the “tweaking” part tho, I see what you’re saying. I would rather call it “evolving” into year 2. I completely expect to be a more wide open 50/50 run/pass balance.
Even tho AS seemed to do pretty well on the long ball last year, he seems to be remembered most by the miss to KW. I watch alot of football every year and I always watch our opponents play every week, when they’re not playing the 9ers, and everyone of them play defense differently when they go against us. Alot more stacked boxes like you said and alot of overloaded blitzes. Because of that we didn’t throw it deep enough times! I believe that if that approach is used this year in regards to how defenses play us, it wont be for long. We definitely need to evolve to the point defenses play us honestly and then the deep ball is gonna fly.
“Also, the defense will not feel threatened if Alex misfires on 70-80% of long throws.”
Not sure where those numbers comes from, AES.
Recorded stats generally show anything over 25 yards as a “Big Pass Play.”
So, in this area, while not superb, Smith is one shy of Flacco and Fitz but better than Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez, etc.
He was tied for 12th or 13th in big pass plays this last season. Which, in context, is still better than 20 other guys. I keep saying this: we need to count our blessings in many ways with Smith. He’s not perfect and so far just kind of above average in some ways (and categories) but he’s far from the worst guy out there and in some categories… actually not bad at all.
The reason the box was stacked was because:
1) Without Morgan and Edwards we were thin at receiver. Crabs has difficulties putting on speed in routes and we really didn’t have any big threats at that position. This will change a bit this season. If Randy Moss has anything left in the tank teams will be less likely to stack the box.
2) Teams could easily overload the right side of the line – as witnessed in Baltimore. John Harbaugh had his brother’s team figured out VERY well.
We were much better than I expected in handling some of those situations, though. Some of the slants and screens and such worked out OK. Not great or perfect but pretty well.
@Adam
I think most of those successful pass plays were to one position and most of the failed attempts to another position.
Also, those other QB’s you brought up definitely have better WR’s than the Niners have. Not any close. Not at all.
Well put.
Thanks! Did you read the article on NinersNation about Harbaugh/Baalke building a bully? Great article and some good points. I dont know how to post the link tho!
I have supported AS since day 1. No I dont think he is elite, or great, and maybe just this past year we can finally call him good. I like AS a great deal. I really think that JJ is going to push AS big time and quite possible be the starter next year. He doesnt sign with the Niners, to become the third string QB. Makes no sense seing that he was the backup at the Bucs with a better chance at starting. CK is not a third stringer either. I see the Niners trading CK, for a better first round pick, maybe the Browns at 22, or who knows. If the Niners want CF thats how they get him. Back to JJ, we all should be happy that he is here and I think he has a huge upside.
The day they trade a promising young QB to move up 8 spots in the draft is the day I stop being a 9ers fan.
You must be too young to know about many trades.
In 1961, the 49ers traded Tittle to the New York Giants for backup guard Lou Cordileone.
(The rookie Cordileone was quoted as reacting “Me, even up for Y.A. Tittle?). Tittle went on to lead the Giants to championships and poor Lou was cut.
That’s before my time but if it wasn’t I would still hold a grudge for that for sure. QB’s are just so valuable, the only time you trade a guy like that is if he’s Kevin Kolb.
@grimey
We have no idea if CK is promising. At this point it is just as accurate to say the project with nothing done. The media and fans decide things about players that only the coaches/player/teammates have any real impact on.
And if the guy we got (in the trade) put us up top as a Super Bowl team, then it is worth it. A promising QB is not as important as a Super Bowl win. Nobody is. And if the current QB can get you there with this new weapon, all the better. None wil require the cap space of the promising player, and if the rsult is what matters, we’re set. And if you win the Super Bowl once with this pair, you can win a lot more.
A promising player does not always keep his promises.
cool story bro
Yep DS,,we learned that over the last 7 years,a very promising QB from Utah didn’t keep his promises, but he tried his best ! :)
CK7 is seen as the primary threat to Smith’s job. That is why you’re seeing a sudden clamoring for him to be traded.
You are dead on msc.
Not a clamor for a trade on my part. I just see it happening. I want the best QB to be the man. Dont care who it is just want the best.
The fact that Harbaugh hand picked CK shows he is promising. The fact that Baalke orchestrated a trade to move up to get him says even more about how they feel about him. I guess they are only the HC and GM of the year if Smith is the starter.
MSC, what do you think? Do you think CK will win the made up competition? Speak up my friend!
@Hofer in 2012 I think Smith is the starter. Going forward I think CK7 is the biggest threat to Smith’s job.
The way the 49ers structured Alex’ contract leads me to believe he is not seen as a long term answer. I don’t care what Harbaugh says to the media – he’s already shown he’ll replace Smith at the drop of a hat if he can.
Money talks and BS walks. The 49ers are paying Plan B Smith bottom of the league money.
MSC, couldn’t disagree more. JJ will be kicking at his heals as the legit backup. Obviously signing AS as starter and JJ as a backup has sent a message to CK. He may even be trade bait at this point. Think about it, if he’s not ready to start in year 2, what makes you think he will ever be ready to start. He’s not competing against BF like AR was in GB.
Also if Cleveland is willing to give up their #22 pick this year why didn’t they draft Kaep #21 last year.
+1
*for it to*.
@htwaits
Bringing back some memories. The 1960 49ers were having success running the shotgun and obviously Y.A. didn’t fit. Next season the NFL figured it out and the shotgun was history until Landry brought it back with the Cowboys. Billy Kilmer ran the shotgun for Niners.
MSC,
The 49ers setting up the Smith’s contract in a way that allows them to move on after a year is smart, since it gives them options. And certainly it fits your narrative, but they could also just be trying to cover themselves in case AS’s development levels off and CK’s soars. In the case AS continues to grow they’re in good shape with his contract being relatively cheap, and CK waiting in the wings.
I’m not advocating a trade either. I just see this JJ pick up as odd.
If you trade CK away, you’re essentially saying you believe in Smith which is lukewarm or an outright lie (obviously) and/or you believe in a guy who completes passes in the 45% range.
Just seems fishy to me unless there’s a side JJ has not been able to show in the NFL so far.
@Adam I see it as having 3 quarterbacks with the same basic skill-set/archetype (probably the wrong word).
Alex, CK7 and JJ are all athletic guys and Josh knows the offense. If an injury happens the next guy can step in without radically altering the playbook.
Alternatively – Harbaugh is telling the team that no matter what you have to earn your spot. Even if that spot is only the #3 QB spot.
Adam,
At least you are giving this pickup some thought. Just remember, it’s time to stop listening to the hype from Harbaugh. He tells the players what he feels like they need to hear to get the best of of each and every one of them. Some of them, I’m sure he doesn’t have to say a word to. Everyone is different.
The bottom line is that everyone has to earn their position. JH proved he meant that last year. You are correct. You will soon see what is fishy about this acquisition of Josh Johnson.
“@Adam I see it as having 3 quarterbacks with the same basic skill-set/archetype (probably the wrong word).”
I agree with that completely. He’s looking for a certain “type” of guy.
What I keep wondering though is how this works.
Let’s say Tolzien can go back to the practice squad. OK, that’s out of the way, but…
It’s a mess if Tolzien has a really strong camp.
And…
I can’t see either CK or JJ being OK to be guy #3. I can’t see how JJ would come from a #2 spot (unless there was a threat he was going to be replaced) and accept a #3 (a demotion) unless being closer to home or Harbaugh is THAT important to him that it trumps everything else. If he competes and loses and is #3, maybe the carrot is that they tell him Smith isn’t around long and he and CK go for it again next year.
Conversely, I can’t see how CK would be OK with QB of the future and the next minute being shoved to #3.
So maybe we’re missing something here – which it always seems like we’re light years behind what these guys are actually doing. A report or rumor I had heard regarding Smith’s contract was that he wasn’t happy with something in it regarding a “sign and trade” option. If that’s out of there, he stays. If not, it could be that he’s the trade bait. Maybe Cleveland doesn’t go after Tannehill in the draft? Maybe Jacksonville isn’t completely sold on Gabbert (who is at this point?) Maybe Miami is back in play at #8. Fitz aint all that in Buffalo and they’re at #10. Maybe they try to get out of that contract.
But maybe CK is the trade bait. Maybe they will try to calm the egos and keep all three.
Dunno, just seems weird on a couple of different levels. I suspect there may be some moves we’re not seeing.
Adam, if opinions are set aside and we use only logic, the possibility of a trade sounds likely. We’ll find out soon enough.
Until Peyton Manning all of the quarterbacks Harbuagh liked were athletic types.
Josh, Luck, Alex, CK7 are all strong athletes. Manning was an anomaly but he’s “Peyton Friggin’ Manning”. Harbaugh seems to prefer QBs who can run. That might be a product of his time in Indianapolis behind a horrible offensive line.
Undercenter,
Very well said. I cvan’t suit up and play for Josh. he has to prove himself to these fans and this franchise. I have nothing else to say for him. We’ll just have to let things play out. I know what we had in a QB and I know what our front office feels like we have based upon the contract we gave Alex. Time will tell and we will soon see. I can’t wait.
Remember the last time we got a QB from Tampa Bay in the 80s? That worked out pretty well for us…
He also hung around a long time before he got to take over the team, and he also had a army of haters. He couldn’t win the “big one” — until he did. He couldn’t stay in the pocket — until he did. He wasn’t accurate — until he was. He couldn’t slide to avoid a tackle — oops, he never did. :-}
Montana v. Young was a real QB controversy.
Excuse me but is he trying to equate the great SY to JJ?
Well said HT!
Excuse me but is he trying to equate the great SY to JJ?
Well said HT!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And Smith to Montana?
Seeing as it is draft season, here is the most artistic mock draft I’ve seen:
http://www.chrissteuber.com/steubermockdraft.html
I’m not sure I agree with the picks but I really like the style.
Ya, that is a pretty cool layout. If Janoris Jenkins didn’t have them character issues he’d go alot higher than 30. Could be great value if those issues are behind him, however I’m expecting something special from Baalke here with this first pick. I have a feeling we ain’t picking at 30!
I’d really hate to see Antonio Cromartie 2.0 (Jenkins) on the 49ers. I have a strong dislike for men who treat women as disposable “baby mommas”.
MSC,thanks for the link…like you don’t see the picks but wow nice layout Mr Steuber! Love to see him design some football gear.
“Alex Smith remains the 49ers’ undisputed starter. That point was made clear to free-agent quarterback Josh Johnson, who signed a two-year contract with the 49ers on Thursday..”
Matt Miaocco
“We have no interest in Peyton Manning”
-49ers front office
lemons……LMAO!!!!
At that time they might not have had any interest in PM. Remember, he called the 49ers.
Funny,Johnson said they never mentioned that he couldn’t compete for a starting spot. He said they told him he could come and keep working and improving his game and could get reps and compete.
Right now they have 4 QB’s on the roster and 3 of them were brought to the team personally by Jim Harbaugh. The only one who JH did NOT bring to the team is the same one they tried to get rid of last week,#11.
Yeah but what does that really mean, Tim?
You can’t seriously be advocating playing a guy with Tebow like numbers?
I would start CK long before JJ. No offense meant to JJ but his numbers up to this point don’t inspire me whatsoever. I’m fine with working, getting reps, always getting better and all that and maybe getting a real shot but right now? I don’t see it.
This move baffles me. Sorry. Just one fan’s opinion.
No Adam, actually I am skeptical of JJ until I see him play some. I have seen the stats on him with TB but I have also heard some so called experts say he really showed some great potential in his few starts with TB,although the numbers don’t show that.
He is the type of QB I have always wanted but having all the tools means nothing if the NFL game is too quick for you or you have other problems etc.
Kaep has been in the system for a year and I think all he needs is playing time to make his mistakes and learn from them, but he is not guaranteed anything either, unless he can produce.
All I was saying is that out of the 4 QB’s on the roster,3 of them were hand picked by JH and one was just left over. He already tried to move Alex out just this week,so if I were Alex I would make sure that my production went WAAAAAY up this year or the next time JH won’t just TRY to move him out of the starting lineup he will do it,with one of his own hand selected QB’s.
Right NOW it’s Alex’s job but earlier in the week Alex was out and PM was in and now JH brings in another one of HIS guys, along with HIS gut Kaep and HIS guy Tolzien.
I see Tolzien as the odd man out and think when they try to put him on the PS he will be grabbed up.
So that leaves two of JH’s hand picked guys breathing down Alex’s neck and JH coaching them up. Alex had better step up and do MUCH bettere than last year or he better hope both CK and JJ are also just as mediocre as he is.
TIM, you’re implying that the Niners would have kept Kap, Johnston and Tolzein over Peyton Manning because they were “hand picked by JH”.
That’s retarded.
Smith is the starter and will remain the starter through training camp and into the season.
Smith may lose his starting role through injury or poor performance but to think Kap (zero TD’s in last pre-season), Johnson (couldn’t hold a backup job at Tampa) or Tolzein (never played a down as a Niner QB) will displace him before then just shows your lack of any kind of football knowledge.
Free Nate!!! Free Troy!! Sign McNabb!!!!
No Craps, you just are not understanding, let me try to help you.
***JH hand selected PM to come here, the same as he selected JJ and Tolzien and Kaep. The only one who was left over from the old regime and the only one he tried to get rid of this week is #11.
Next time try to actually read a post before you comment on it,lol.
@TIM
“***JH hand selected PM to come here…”
“…the only one he tried to get rid of this week is #11.”
Is this the lastest rumor? LOL
Most likely, people are saying it was PM who contacted the Niners. And JH’s boss, TBaalke, was looking at all avenue, long shot or not.
Plus the contract for AS was never taken off the table, that’s what I read from different sites.
FYI , Braylon Edwards is still rehabbing . LOL
@TIM If Harbaugh didn’t hand pick Smith, why did he go against Baalke by insisting on having the QB return in 2011 & giving him a playbook before a FA contact was inked? You’re clueless as ever.
@Albert S.
A good rule of thumb with this contract stuff is the following:
“Hear all, trust nothing.”
And to be fair, I don’t think anybody here has actually watched JJ. We don’t know how/what happened in those games he played which lead to the bad stats.
If you look at AS’s numbers in 2010 (first 5 games) the stats were horrible. But when you look carefully into it, they were good..to the RB’s, TE’s and WR’s. Except one WR; MC. When AS targeted him early in 2010, bad things happened. When he targeted anybody else (early 2010), good things happened (or at least not the worse of the worse in Int’s).
So, maybe JJ has some crap players like AS did who didn’t run their routes well and such. And maybe most of the bad stats were all around one guy, not the whole team in general. The stats won’t reflect that though off hand.
Again, a good reason why I don’t go by stats at all. Hate them. Those numbers don’t tell us how JJ played. Just like the stats in 2010 AS didn’t show that most of the bad play in 2010 happened early and happened almost exclusively when targeting MC. As the season wore on, AS and MC got better with one another. Basically throwing a pass to VD and MC produced similar good things and not so many bad things. All in all 2010 was a decent stat year for AS. It was just really horrible in the beginning, and that was almost exclusively when targeting one player.
Manningham’s contract, 2 years 7.35 million total. 2 million of it guaranteed.
Good deal.
Ya, and that’s about 4m less than what Morgan was signed for!
Yeah and if they cut him next year it isn’t that bad against the cap
Snyder has very deep pockets.
Same goes for Alex ,Montana Man.
opps, that was supposed to be for BigNiner, not Montana Man.
Saving money cutting him of course is soooooo important.
Me, I’d prefer he caught 20 TD’s and held out next year for a better contract.
Harbaughs are at the Indiana-Kentucky game.
they’ve been showing shots of them all game. The Indiana coach is their brother in-law.
@htwaits
“Bringing back some memories. The 1960 49ers were having success running the shotgun and obviously Y.A. didn’t fit. Next season the NFL figured it out and the shotgun was history until Landry brought it back with the Cowboys. Billy Kilmer ran the shotgun for Niners.”
They started the season with three quarterbacks alternating. Brodie the passer, Kilmer run or pass, and a third guy I don’t remember who only ran.
at Detroit Lions W 49-0
Los Angeles Rams W 35-0
at Minnesota Vikings W 38-24
at Chicago Bears L 31-0 *** end of the three quarterback shotgun
Chicago Bears W 41-31 *** probably only Kilmer
1962 might have been the off season when Kilmer mangled his leg when he ran off the road on 101 South of San Francisco. Again the 49ers got rid of him and he had a very good time for the Redskins.
So long ago, and so far away. It might as well have been in another Galaxy.
The above history is from the 1962 season.
To expound on the story a little bit, George Halas went to his resident genius Clark Shaughnessy to figure out how to stop the shotgun and he did with pressure. Shaughnessy is regarded as the father of the T-formation. Probably could do it in any era.
I watched that game. It was like the Saints preseason game this year only they kept carting quarterbacks off the field. I’m sure there were QB bounties involved.
News Flash-Senator to call hearings on NFL bounty system.
This is a very, very important issue and the government must look deeply into this matter. The safety of our National Security is at stake. This matter could affect the very essence of society as we know it.
Or maybe gain a few votes.
I love when Congress gets “outraged” over something in the sports world.
They have failed to manage the economy, we have young men and women wasting their blood over useless patches of desert, our infrastructure is collapsing, the digital age is blind-siding our security apparatus and Congress is suddenly spurred to action by bounties in a $#&*-ing game.
Hurricane Irene should have hit Washington D.C. and flushed Capitol Hill like a giant toilet.
Politicians all over the world are the same. They want to be richer than richer than rich.
Change thre Senate and WH and the problems will start to get reversed !NOV !
…keep dreaming Timmy……Dems keep WH, Senate and win back the house…….
…….with your track record of losing….I am confident Dems will win…
Onelame………Who in the hell said Dems are in the white house? You mean Obama and his socialist regime. Democrat……..LMAO!!! Even They are tired of this dictator. You’ve got a lot to learn young man
Dictator? Socialist Regime??? lol.
md’s rant tells you all you need to know about his wacked out worldview. Niners not the least of it.
Tim changing the white house and the senate is not going to make a difference when the entire global system is corrupted with the main focus to generate wealth rather than ehancing quality of life on this planet.
Lemons…Well said. Its not going to happen when you have a country striken with fear from our last Dictator. And another in right now that feeds off of the lazy American depending on handouts. Yes this country is finally shaping up to what they always wanted it to be…….. Not Independence, but Dependence on them. Patroit act= dictator ship …..Obama care= dictatorship to name a few. 12 Years and running now. But morons like onelame that thinks he’s “sticking it to the man” [meaning republicans]continue to look for that free handout. Give the Americans free money at the cost of the rich, ‘who succeeded in life’ and get the votes….Obama’s bread and butter. Now I know why Onelame and every other Lib on here love Smith so much. Its those damn bleeding hearts. Wheeew!
>>Obama care= dictatorship
lol.
If only it were so we could declare you certifiably insane.
…ha ha ha…..i knew you were dumb…but i didn’t think it was this bad……Dictator? Socialist Regime???…really dude….
…that was the first thing that popped into your head when you think of oppossing the president of the USA………Hate much!!!
Ribico….Thought you lived out of country? If your not American dont speak. Can you offer any facts that say Obama isnt a socialist and Bush wasnt a dictator? Or your just going to chime in with overseas lame comments to take the attention off of the subject? What’s it going to be?
Yeah onelame….Im sure you looooved Bush. Right? He was a “Republican” See how this works onelame? Tell you what. Ill leave my political views for adult talk. Ones that can argue my views in an adult manner. Not with lame oneliners and NO views or facts of their own. Bloggers I appoligize for even stepping into political views with two foreigners and morons like Ribico and onelame. WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN! Type on you two. The political floor is yours. Imgoing back to Football. Have at it Government hopefuls.
“When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”)– Obama
Come on MD, I expect much more logical statements from you!!! Regardless of what you think about the current president he is not a Socialist! Please stop listening to the bs the left and the right media is serving you every day for breakfast. Our system on both sides, here and globally is all about power and control. Spiritual values, religion, cultural differences has been and will be used to create tension among the masses so we continue to have less rights and become a robot in the system. It’s not about the lazy people or the hard working people who have maximized their opportunities to succeed. It’s all about the few, the elite who will continue to put on a puppet show to control the system. It’s always been like this and it will continue to be until the social awareness increases and our species chose to reprioritize how we live. Anyway let’s get back to our niners and talk some happy talk. GO NINERS
Chicago….I agree with most of what you say. IDK if its “the hometown” love for Obama, but cmon man. Read up on the history of Socialism and compare to Obamas views. Like…..Universal healthcare, spreading the wealth, a greener america, extending unemplyment……. Look up if Obama is a socialist on the internet. LOOK at both partys opinions. Compare foreign policies to Obamas. Look Im not a Rep or Dem…. I thought Bush was a dictator as much as Obama and him FORCING his health care on us with the majority voting against it. Maybe I can look outside the box because I dont choose a party. I choose the constitution and its laws. And they have been violated for 12 years running now. You say its a global thing and I agree. The agenda is a One world Government pushed hard by Bush 1. So socialism is the gateway to this Global problem the US will be involved in sooner than later. Thx for posting an opinion with some respect and in an adult manner. Chi. Even though we may disagree. Its nice to know you can be on another page with NO disrespect. Have a great weekend Bro. And YES!!! GO NINERS!!! Ok now Im done with politics. ;-)
Yeah md, I live out of country – that communist offshore island of Manhattan.
md, you wouldn’t know a socialist or dictator if it bit you in the @ss. Are you being serious with this?
>>“When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”)– Obama
ol. everybody who’s been president since the advent of progressive income tax is a socialist-dictator? Ike must have been Stalin’s clone – highest rate was 90% under him.
Dictator… you are killing me, md.
..I rest my case……honestly i dont know where to start….its obvious ninermd never finished high school…….
……there is a pattern from ninermd, I am starting to pick up on….
If you like Alex – you must only be a fan of Alex so it means you are not a fan of the team
If you live overseas – you can’t be an american citizen that works overseas
If you don’t live in San fra and are able to buy ticket – you are not a real fan because real 49er fans don’t live anywhere else but san fra
If you live overseas – you can’t be a real american citizen because real american citizens don’t live overseas
…..it seems things have to be CAREFULLY explained to ninermd and even that won’t help because he has either been brainwashed not to be able to process complex thoughts or he his just a dumb nimrod that is wasting oxygen…..
“Change thre Senate and WH and the problems will start to get reversed !NOV !”
Doesn’t make any real difference Tim. It’s all the same old thing. Two sides of the same coin.
Every time I hear Ike’s fairwell speech it gives me goosebumps or reading about the “business plot” against FDR.
We live under a corporatocracy or a mini oligarchy as Matt Taibi put it. Multi-national corporations rule it all. And… they ain’t republicans or democrats. :P One of the founding fathers warned about this – of course, I forget which one.
You ( the general population at large) think our votes make any damned bit of difference, you’re delusional.
All the world’s governments are set up to do a couple basic things, perpetuate power for the elite ruling class and make that class even wealthier. That’s it. Doesn’t matter what “party” you belong to. It’s all the same thing. And… we’re all sheep, we let it happen. Our rights are eroding away every single day – case in point: citizens can now be targeted for elimination WITHOUT a trial. What’s next? We’ve already got perpetual war (which was also warned against) to secure resources in the name of national interest and to prop up the arms industries.
Everything is designed now to keep us fat and stupid.
What could be next?
Why are we talking politics here. Add religion and we’re in for big trouble. Doesn’t disagreeing about players in certain roles on the 9er team cause enough furor here. There are news blog sites for those subjects. Back to football and the draft.
I think they are all just really bored right now hof.
What a great way to waste the taxpayer’s money. What next, a congressional hearing on players getting DUIs?
Like they don’t have anything better (helping their fat-wallet buddies get even richer) to do.
What a joke. I heard this on ESPN radio this morning on the way to work. Just about gagged on my coffee.
The Senate meeting on the NFL Bounty Scandal will be chaired by Senator Blutarsky.
@ Andrew
Thanks for the laugh
@ Adam
If the Senate Sub-Committee is going to investigate NFL players taking payments, who’s going to investigate the Senators taking payments and “courtesies” from lobbyists?
Te hee hee!
Ribico..knows government like he knows rocket science.
“Spread the Wealth” ..is asking the filthy rich to pay a fair share. Exxon-Romney paid nothing to almost nothing.
Yeah, defend the rich as they laugh at fools who believe the FOX NEWS propaganda.
Mr. Davis is in his prime. He could not be denied in the playoffs. Now we have Moss and Manningham and Mr. Crabs plus VD. That is a recipe for disaster against a defense. Gore/Hunter as appetizers with Chef Harbaugh cooking up the plays. Needs something, Coby Fleener too? Alex Smith should have a veritable buffet of plays with which to enjoy this year. 28pts per game does not seem out of the question. OLB,RG, RB,WR, S/CB/KR is how I see this draft and you have one hellava team on paper, deep and on the edge. Go Harbaugh, Go Baalke, Go Niners!!
Well put Razor.
Means jack sh*t if the O-line can’t protect Smith and right now we don’t have a starting right guard. And the others didn’t play that great last year either.
Amini Silatolu, G, Midwestern State
Well put Razor……You are correct. The stars are all alligned for Smith this year. Time to get it done. Barring injury.28 points a game should BE the average. No excuses. Get it done and lets celebrate #6. So fired up for next season.
Miami owner Stephen Ross says that the team didn’t sign Alex Smith to an $8 million deal because he didnt want to run the risk of Smith losing the job to Matt Moore. You all have to admit, that would’ve been a real possibility. They are about the same guy to me. ZWith more having the better 2nd half of last season.
I understand what you’re saying but Stephen Ross is as legitimate an NFL source as Kim Kardashian.
Actually, Kim probably knows NFL players better.
@msc
Give Ross a few years and he’ll reach Jerry Jones status.
Msc,
He just needs a real good GM. Then he needs yo take 3 steps back and shut up!
As Sapp and the FA LB from somewhere (I forget now) said the other day on NFL Net: Ross is the reason no one wants to play in Miami.
I don’t know if JJ is going to be any good or just another mediocre guy.I will have to wait to see him play.
But i do know that the team has been trying to replace Alex for about 5 years now ,with each try getting more desperate, They know Alex is not the answer since he had a mediocre year last year (although his best)and we had one of the worst offenses in the NFL . They replaced him with JT O’Sullivan and then Hill and then Troy Smith and then tried to get Warner and then went out and got his future replacement in Kaepernick and then tried to replace him immediately with Manning and now have signed JJ to give it a shot if Kaepernick can’t do it.
It is obvious to all, even Alex, that he is not wanted for the long term around here, that is why he was only offered a short term deal ,take it or leave it,without even a signing bonus and with a contract that is really just a 1 year deal if he doesn’t dramatically improve.
Remember…We have 4 QB’s on the roster and 3 of them were hand picked by Jim Harbaugh .The other one that was a left over from before JH got here (#11) was being sent packing earlier this week until things didn’t work out as the staff wanted and they had to bring him back .If Alex doesn’t produce MUCH better than last years dismal production that had his offense one of the worst in the NFL,the next time they won’t just TRY to replace him but one of JH’s hand picked QB’s WILL replace him. Even if it is not a guy on the roster but another guy he brings in,like he tried this week
So,Alex knows this is it (for the 5th or 6th time it is his “last ” chance, lol. Pump up your production Alex or it’s the highway. There WILL be a better QB playing in 2013 than was playing in 2011 ,no doubt.
If Alex takes a huge jump in his talent level and production it could even be him that is the upgrade, who knows,I hope he can do it…but I doubt it and I think the staff doubts it too, because of their recent actions in Alex’s contract and with their attempts to bring in better QB’s
Whatever happens it’s going to be fun for those who love the TEAM,not so much for those stuck on one guy..
@TIM
blah…blah…blah… blah…
Don’t you ever get tired of reading your own posts over and over and over…
That was an incredibly logical and concise argument Oregonsmither.
Obviously You dont Oregonhillbilly.
“…the team has been trying to replace Alex for about 5 years now ,with each try getting more desperate, They know Alex is not the answer since he had a mediocre year last year…”
It appears that the first part is right and I would agree with your last point, he *probably* isn’t their long-term solution (although winning cures everything and I’m not in to absolutes – trying to figure these guys out is as painful as pulling your own teeth.)
I disagree with mediocre though (this last year, anyway.) 3rd down conversions = not good but it is explainable (outside of Smith as mentioned by Joe Montana. “Your offense sucks, what do you want him to do in third and very long?”) The red zone stuff is puzzling somewhat as Smith was pretty good in the red zone in 2010. So maybe there’s a matter of what they’re scheming last year and they just didn’t have the personnel to pull off a short field in a more efficient way. I played the game and I’m not sure I can give a halfway intelligent answer on that. Most likely a combination of things (and I wouldn’t excuse Smith from his share of the blame in that.) Some things I noticed were issues with communication in some instances, fades vs. curl routes, Kyle Williams not sitting down in the end zone, Smith missing some guys, etc. Looks to be a combination of things that needs to be fixed.
I think if Smith plays the way he played in 2011, with two years finally in the same system, stability in coaches (even though they may be total weasels) and the new weapons he has, things might be looking up. Then again, it could also go south. Nobody knows until the games are played.
If things do go backward I think then we know for sure what’s what. Granted this may be a tougher schedule this season but the team proved last year that they can overcome almost all adversity and there are some new offensive weapons. May not be 13-3 but it should be a winning season. So I think we know FINALLY this season what the deal is with Smith. Either he is truly mediocre or he previously had so many things stacked against him it was impossible to move forward.
Dunno, Tim, but it will be fun to watch. :)
The Niners didn’t have to sign Smith last year and they didn’t have to sign him this year so that makes Smith the only QB on the team that has been hand picked by JH TWICE.
Johnson has not been brought in to give Smith competition. The guy couldn’t even hold on to his job as backup QB at Tampa. Doesn’t that tell you folks something?? He’s in competition with Kap & ST to make the team. He may not.
Smith was the second choice TWICE.
Alex is a solid Plan B.
they all will get there fair shot except Tolzien i think, there is a big possibility if CK developed big enough that Smith and JJ will be seen as experienced backups who could fill immediately it makes all sense cuz Newton,Dalton and Ponder started for those teams and Harbaugh rated CK higher than those guys so it would make no sense for Harbaugh to let CK sit for to long so IMO if he come’s well developed in TC and plays consistenly with great flashes than he will start with 2 athletic experienced guys backing him up
Just out of curiosity how do we know Harbaugh rated CK above Newton, Dalton and Ponder? I thought I heard he rated Dalton higher than CK.
I enjoy going over the mocks on the web, here is a list of potential first rounders that could be available at 30. Please add to the list or make recommendations. They’re in no particular order;
Stephen Hill wr Georgia Tech
Kendall Wright wr Baylor
Kevin Zeitler og Wisconsin
Coby Flenner te Stanford
Stephon Gilmour cb South Carolina
Alshon Jeffery wr South Carolina
Lamar Miller??? rb Miami
And a long shot, Fletcher Cox dt Mississippi State
Zeitler is a 2nd Rounder. His teamate Konz is a 1st Rounder and I expect the Ravens to procure him. I do like Fleener late 1st Round.
Two different sites that I respect have Zeitler going to the 49ers. Scott Wright’s draftcountdown is one.
I don’t agree with them at all – I’m just saying a Zeitler pick isn’t out of the question.
It seems like a lot of quality cornerbacks could be available at 30 – I’m starting to think that could be the direction Baalke goes.
@Andrew from Rishikesh
Nice list and post…I personally favor either Stephen Hill WR or Stephon Gilmore CB; Streeter WR from Miami is interesting in the 2nd or 3rd round…have heard he’s a monster in YAC. I think that we need BOTH speed and size at WR; someone who can ‘go to school’ under Moss. I still think that Baalke is angling a trade to improve our draft position….one of our 4 QB’s?
Andrew
I don’t know why, but I don’t think that the niners draft guards in the first round…after Kwame Harris, maybe not OT’s either.
I like Mocks, too. Kind of nerdy but fun to see if you can outguess the draft gurus. I usually narrow my picks down to a range of specific players in each round. I believe I missed in Aldon Smith last year but I might have had Kendal Hunter. I think I was maybe 1 of 7 or 2 of 7 last year. Not good :P
At 30 I would say you have:
Brandon Wheeden, QB OK State. He’s projected somewhere in the mid 30s overall. We seem to have a full house with QBs and taking one in the first round seems implausible.
Cordy Glenn, OG/ROT Georgia is projected at 29 (I think he may go several spots earlier) He’d probably be a solid pickup for us if he falls. Osemele or Allen in later rounds might be a better value though.
Jonathon Martin, LOT, Stanford is somewhere in the mid 20s and might be interesting to look at if he falls a bit.
Coby Fleener is currently ranked at 35 overall but of course may go earlier as we’re all hearing. But I think we all agree, he’d be a solid pick up. Probably depends on the confidence they have in whether or not Byham can make it back, the comfort level Harbaugh has in Fleener, overall needs, etc. Production, 6′ 6″, speedy, what’s not to love?
Lamar Miller and David Wilson are mid 30s prospects at running back. Might be worth a hard look. Give Dixon some competition to back Gore up. I like both these running backs. Otherwise you have Polk and Martin in the later rounds to look at.
Change of pace back i don’t think we need. Kendal Hunter proved his worth.
Stephen Hill and Kendal Wright as featured receivers and are right there in the early 30s. I’ve seen some mocks take Wright earlier. Could be a reach for those teams. Criner and Sanu are 40s prospects but could also come off earlier. Criner, for example might be good as a possession (early drive and red zone) kind of a target – he’s 6′ 3″ 224. He’s ranked first amongst possession guys. We may not need a receiver but maybe one homegrown (as Hofer puts it) would be smart. Wright for speed, Criner for red zone – take your pick.
I don’t see Fullback as a need, so I’ll skip that on offense.
On defense, we’re pretty solid but…
a 3-4 DE to look at that is in the 30 area would be Kendall Reyes out of Connecticut. It may be time to look at some young blood to spot or to groom after Justin Smith or Sop. Neither are getting any younger. Maybe they think Tukuafu or Williams will be stepping up. Tuk just got a new contract so… who knows. A true DT, Dontari Poe will probably go mid-20s and there isn’t anyone else until the later rounds. Although the way these guys evaluate players? Who knows.
Some linebackers to either challenge Harylson or if they don’t keep Larry Grant might be Zach Brown from North Carolina but he figures to go mid-20s. Of course, strong side you see Dont’a Hightower right in the area. He’s slated at 28, it looks like.
Nothing really to look for at strong safety although Harrison Smith’s stock is rising in the second round. Probably end up mid 40s to early 50s
Same with free safety. No early pick there.
Corners, eh… Alfonzo Dennard is in the neighborhood.
I don’t know, for my money I think they draft an offensive player in the first round – it seems almost obvious to me. Best guy out of whoever is left. We need some O-line help although I think Glenn and Martin are ten spots out of reach, Fleener would be great at TE, either one of the receivers or the running backs would be a nice get as well.
I can’t wait for the draft!
33 days until football-nerd Christmas!
I fully admit to being a football nerd.
As a fellow draft nerd here is my updated mock subject to change:(1)Fleener TE/WR ;(2)Silatolu OG;(3)Quick WR;(4) Streeter-WR;(5)Brett Roy LB;(6)B Rainey RB;(7) Owusu WR-;PFA- I. Frey CB
Top, I like your mock draft although COwusu has see too many concussions. But at 7th round, not much of a risk really.
@msc
“33 days until football-nerd Christmas!”
Isn’t that…
1. Opening (kickoff weekend)?
2. Start of Training Camp
3. End of Training Camp
4. Super Bowl
5. NFL draft
6. Start of OTA’s
7. NFL Combine

9. Pro Days of your personal favorite rookies
10. Playoffs
11. Game against an opponent which is actually good (thinking back to when the Niners and Cowboys game was the only one talked about as it neared in the 90′s)
Thanks Hof -yes I think a 7th for a speedy wr who has had his noodle rattled a few times might be worth a shot ,we are coming into the stretch now, exciting!
Not sure if this interview with VD got discussed yesterday with all the Smithers, Kaepernuckleheads and Johnsonites.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/football-san-francisco-niners/niners-talk/Vernon-Davis-big-fan-of-Randy-Moss?blockID=675960&feedID=2800
“Yeah I was trying to figure it all out, what are we going to do, we don’t get Peyton, and Alex is going somewhere or else we don’t get Alex, then we will be in the hole. That’s the only thing I was thinking about, that we wouldn’t have anyone.” Vernon Davis
He must’ve forgotten about CK, ST and didn’t know they had signed the next one in JJ.
Vernon was also excited when the 49ers considered signing Donovan McNabb.
McNabb is so done! Did you not watch him at all the last 2 years? Pretty pathetic!
@Montanaman
I know McNabb is toast. I’m just saying Vernon tends to be overly enthusiastic in public.
So if VD said he was really excited about JJ joining the team would that also be overly excited to the blamers? I think not. That would be there new sig line.
I love Vernon but let’s face it, the guy is a politician. He’s not going to say anything negative about anyone, he likes everyone, would love to play with whomever, etc. I think that’s why the other guys are always giving him the business – he’s kind of set himself up as this persona. :P
Nothing wrong with that I guess and I love the guy. He’s come a long way and seems to be a GREAT team mate for the rest of the guys. Not knocking him at all but I don’t think he’s going to tell you EXACTLY what’s what.
I think the Niners will try to trade up to get DeCastro. There aren’t many holes left to fill and packaging a couple.picks to get a stud RG makes sense to me. What do u guys think?
Makes no sense Vinny cuz DeCastro is a LG and he would cost us at least 3 picks cuz he will probably go in the high 10′s
Decastro is a real football player with huge upside but he is too costly base on the projections and we need the draft picks to build for the future. We still need:
WR
CB
S
RB
ILB
DE
KR and PR
This is a win win situation. Either Alex out performs josh and proves he’s a productive starter and proves he can be the guy. Or josh becomes the starter and upgrades the QB position. Either way us niner fan shosuld be happy and stop arguing (like that’ll happen)
Chicago, Agree with you on all of the needs you listed with the exception of KR/PR. Ginn was resigned and Cox also has experience as a return man.
23j I will bet you, I’ll bet you that this keyboard I’m writing on is smarter than you, if I’m wrong, I will never be seen again on this blog? Deal Wiily tr Welcher? Buwhahahahahahah!
Nice guy. But if he was so great why hasn’t he started??? Just shows our #2 position at Qb is still suspect!
@big frank
This signing means nothing more than likely.
It does not mean AS is in danger to lose his job. JJ is a 5th round pick who could not unseat a bad QB in Tampa and has not received much attention at all FA, when it was known TB did not require his services anymore. So it was no leverage one team to get your own team deal.
TB/JH did their job and picked up a player to compete with others at his position for a job. It WILL NOT be the starter job unless something horrible happens.
The Niners could have easily never bother giving AS a contract and let him and the football world know he is not needed (like TB did with JJ) and gone after JJ instead and save a lot of cap space for x player.
They did not. If anybody really wonders if JJ is competing with AS as the starter, you first need to explain why you give AS any offer at all. If JJ skills so closely match AS, no other team remotely thinks so. And the money the Niners are giving to JJ confirms this as well.
@DS,
Are you on crack or as thick as a Brick? You dulusional Smithers can no longer use the argument, that Slick Jim believes in AS, yea everybody needs to compete for every position, do you think JH would do this if we had Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers. No freaking way he would respect these guys. Signing AS is a insurance policy, you hate to pay for it but you need it if JJ or CK are not up to speed.AS is nothing but a temporary bridge. Start taking your Prozac and get grief counseling for the loss of AS, because he will be gone after this season, the contract prove it.
@Neal
Nice of you to say. Of course I didn’t bother reading any of it. No need. You have the same message every time.
AS sucks.. Those who like him suck.
Pretty much sums it up right there. Don’t you agree?
@DS,
I guess we are even because I usually read a book or two a month but you are not on my best seller’s list, yea I agree with your summary.
No need to trade up unless Baalke/Harbaugh are really enamored with a player. I confident either Fleener or Hill with be there when we go on the clock.
Both will be gone by the time the Niners pick, they will move up and get Fleener is my 2 cents.
Funny how Johnson TDs to Int ratio does not matter but when the hater brings up AS redzone and 3rd down coversion it’s pretty much the law, pathetic!
IlI let Jordo have his offseason wet dream that JJ can unseat AS with an everyday Welcher comment, but come training camp, it won’t even be a competition. If Johnosn was the real deal and I’m sure he got enough reps in TB training camps and offseason work over 4 years he would have shown it. They would have signed him and dealt him like the Eagles did with Kolb. Instead he’s an athletic only arm strength QB that is a career backup just like Nate Davis, Troy Smith, I really think JH did him a favor to be closer to home.
Well said DS, like I said, if the NFL is so business orientated the Bucs would have signed JJ and then trade him to get some picks just like Eagles did with Kolb. TB is like 20 plus under the cap, why didn’t they give him a 2 yr deal last year and then deal him? Cause nobody wants a QB who can’t read defenses, just like Troy Smith and Nate Davis.
Dangit Prime, turn off the mobile option on your phone so you can reply to threads.
I can’t tell what you’re responding to most of the time.
Yeah, that mobile option is worthless. Messes everything up.
@msc
Well msc, if it is in reply to any posts of mine, does it really matter?
: – )
Ego big right now.
P.S. Pretty sure it was my post today at 10:02AM just a tad above this thread.
Prime,
You are an idiot. How do you force someone to take a 2 year deal when that player has a chance to be a free agent the following season? Josh would not have signed a 2 year extension with Tampa. Thats why he wasn’t offered it. When it comes to defending Alex Snith, you Smither clowns turn really stupid about football, all of a sudden!
I think Prime is right, if JJ thought he was a starter, how come no other teams had him in for a visit or workout? By default he is getting a chance to be the #2 in SF and after a couple weeks of free agency, he thought SF might give him a chance, but realistically, only at being the # 2.
Sorry Jordan, I know you have a serious infatuation with Johnson, but come on, he was a 5th round pick, if he had any stater talent, he would have displyed that in Tampa, he didnt and now I think he is hoping that the QB situation in SF turn bad, its not, Alex is the guy and will fight tooth and nail to keep it. He is more motivated and hungrier than ever after all that stuff that went down. Sorry to burst your bubble friend, JJ is just another camp arm to compete with CK and or Tolzien.
@Latino
Starters, or QB’s who know they are starters demand (or better are offered) more than min salary.
The offer supposedly from Miami (wish Nolan was still there, wouldn’t that have been great!) was for about $8 million this coming year. $8 million is a lot more than the minimum salary.
Latino,
If Smith considers himself a quality starter how come the entire NFL took a pass on him except for the Dolphins.
On a side note you should consider a name change. You are in a room filled with mostly men. It’s uncomfortable dialogueing with “Latino Heat”.
So if this guy you speak is of so NFL ready to be a starter in the NFL, why didn’t Tampa extend him within the 5 years he was there and then deal him for something? News flash: Cause he can’t read defenses and his only strength is his athleticism, that equals running the scout team!
Second question, if JJ is so talented and can be a number one, how come he didn’t draw any attention in free agency, I mean if he can be the starter on a NFC championship team like you say, how come MiA, CLE, JKV didn’t take a look at him?
News flash:Cause he’s a career backup at best like Shaun Hill, Nate Davis, and Troy Smith, all guys you cat cAlled to replace Alex and what happened clown? Yeah there all looking for work while Alex is the #1 In SF. Wrong again 23, so deal with it for another year or maybe 3 or 5. But hey lets roll the balls out at training camp and let JH pick the best guy, I’m all for that but if AS wins it flat out, you need to respect that and shut your mouth about it, no excuses like you always make up!
BTW, don’t you have a bet to fulfill you lousy welcher?
Good post prime
Any post to/about 23J needs to include the word “welcher”.
Bay, does it matter what the entire NFL thinks of Alex Smith? Maybe every GM thought AS would resign anyway so no point in kicking the tires on AS anyways? Remember the 49ers only late in free agency expressed an interst in Manning.
Bottom line and only thing that matters is Harbaugh is fully committed to Alex, to his development and to winning, is that not good enough and do you not trust coach to get all those things right in order to win a championship?
I guess not cause you think AS has reached his ceiling and will never be anything more than a junior game manager right?
Harbaugh wasn’t “fully committed to Alex” last week. He was trying to replace Alex.
Alex is plan B. A decent option when the primary option falls through.
Bay, Latino Heat is what it is, if you have homphobic issues, thats your deal, sorry, maybe you need to have an intervention with your manhood, cant help you there.
As for Alex and what happened in free agency, like prime said, he and other teams only become interested in the open market once Manning contacted the 49 ers and expressed interest. I think everyone knew Alex was going nowhere but San Francisico.
“Harbaugh wasn’t “fully committed to Alex” last week.”
He definitely wasn’t committed to CK or JJ either. What an opportune time to kick AS to the curb by having him sign in Mia and letting CK run with the reigns. Didn’t happen did it?!! So what do they think of CK being a 2 yr project?
Prime, Jordo, and Bay aren’t changing their tune so get over it! You can write everything under the sun and it won’t change opinions here. By the end of August you’ll see where things lay. TBD.
Now on to the off-season workouts and the draft…
*reins*
Lemons great input, thanks for your always valued contributions.
Latino,
Now you wNt to be a clOwn and show you have no knowledge of football as well. I’ve never been and never be infatuated with any player in tge NFL. You’ve probably never even seen Josh play.
Jordo, Jordo Jordo, a newbie comes on here and questions your hero JJ with some great points and he’s a clown, that’s classic 23, can’t take the heat but sure can give it you little man.
Johnson is a career backup who will play second fiddle to Alex, everyone knows it, including the rookies on here, deal with it welcher!
…From Bay – “On a side note you should consider a name change. You are in a room filled with mostly men. It’s uncomfortable dialogueing with “Latino Heat”…”
Okay seriously………Cmon dudes and lady …….lets keep it REAL!!!!!….this is Gay-Bay..ing…..
23 I wont name call and Im only here to talk football, more importantly 49 er football. I gave my opinion on Johnson, thats it, you want to call me a clown and say I know nothing about football, whatever, thats your issue, I wont try and talk to you again if you only wanna hear whats in your best interest.
Latino,
You were called a clown, not for your opinions. It was for your attempt at humor by telling me about my infatuation with Josh Johnson. Did I tell you I was infatuated with JJ? If you, you crossed the line with the remark.
If your claim is to talk football and only football, don’t get personal. If you don’t get personal, I won’t either. We’ve shared some good dialogue prior to your last post. I felt like you crossed the line with the personal attempt at humor. I hope you see my position. If you don’t, go back and read your post.
Heat what can you expect from someone who is so far up their own A$$ that it’s okay for him to be critical of AS but when someone who simply points out their opinion on a career backup he freaks out.
Ive been at this with this guy and so have many others on here and it’s clear he is not a 49er fan, a troll on here trying to irk people.
Crabprime,
You’re too narrow minded to communicate with. You have too many screen names to argue with. The only person on the blog to get exposed for posting under multiple names. I can’t believe you’re still here. Nowhere what I post, you always know when it’s me. We’re still trying to figure out how many screen names you have. You might be the simpleton BS, I mean DS for all we know.
23j, all I gotta say is hahahahah! I could be 100 different bloggers but I’m not, you can’t keep playing that same card cause frankly it’s old news. Why can’t you just stick to talking football and more specifically defending that other nobody from Oakland who we just signed, you can’t cause he’s a 3rd string QB at best just like you, a third class citizen. Keep trying welcher Willy!
23 never realized infatuation was a personal attack, my apologies, wrong choice of words, since johnson signed you have been his biggest fan considering you might have posted the most regarding this issue. maybe a better term would be hard on, man crush, Im totally kidding, cheers 23!
Latino,
My apologies as well. I responded because I know the tone of our wxchanges had been respectful and that was one different.
You’ve not been here long so you wouldn’t know this. However, I commented on this blog last season at the start that Johnson would be coming here. I sing his praises because I’ve seen his work and I know his excellence in this offense. As I said earlier, I can’t do his job or prove him to be worthy. He has to do that himself. I’m excited about him being here and expect him to prove himself. We will find out soon enough. Once again, my apologies Latin.
You got it right on the money ! I bet this died fan of his 23jordon, wouldn’t want that kind of talked about his boy. lol !+
Boy,
Do you need an interpreter? Your thoughts are scrambled. Work on that english, then come back boy!
Based on what’s happened in FA, etc, maybe the 9ers will take the N.E. approach and trade down. The WRs and RBs talent in the 2nd and 3rd round will still be there – not 1st round quality but a lot of quantity in those two positions in the lower rounds. Guys like JFuller, DJones, BQuick at WR and RTurbin, CPolk, and sleeper BBolden at RB. TB proved last year he can find quality guys in the quantity rounds of 3-7. Looking forward to the draft!!
I like that idea
Chi9er, I’m starting to think it is more of a possibility due to the fact CF and the top WRs will be gone. Their other needs, guard, RB, CB, DL can be addressed in rounds 3-5++. TB and his staff will come away with some good talent. I wasn’t a big fan of TB because of his BParcel roots, which typically drafts different than the WCO with bigger less nimble guys, but it worked well last year.
Hof, trading down is a good move, this is a deep draft and there may not be much difference between a mid-2 and a mid-3. Even at 4 there will be value. However, does this front office think there is someone out there that puts them over the top? One great thing about Baalke and Harbaugh is that they are impossible to read.
With all the posturing this team does to have competition I’m starting to guess that a running back could go 3 or maybe even 2.
Well based on our talent and our age, we should definately trade back. Fleener will not be there and we are young and good at all our skill positions except guard rodgers and j smith. we need a guard and the other 2 are great players but they are our oldest stars. Trade back save money pile up future draft picks and stack up on depth and competition. Cause eventually some guys will feel they are worth more than they are( Lawson Clements Spikes Franklin). But we will have a back up plan and be ready to move on if need be. Ourorganization will be ready for the long haul not just one year wonders
On Top Gear they describe the Jag’s seating as so soft, “It’s like sitting on a fat dog”…
Excuse me????
The best people I know are Dogs. And old or fat dogs are funny.
Very interesting take from Roger Theder. QB guru.
http://t.co/hPinw0g0
Good Column.
Great quote at the end by Roger Theder QB Guru.
” Which one, Johnson or Kaepernick, will win the battle to be the Niners’ backup? Theder thinks both are capable of beating out Alex Smith for the starting job.
“I think both of them could, yes,” Theder said. “I think they’re both very talented — much more talented than Alex. I’m an Alex Smith fan. I just think Colin and Josh are both very, very talented kids.”
Thankfully this will be the last year of Alex Smith.
“Thankfully this will be the last year of Alex Smith.”
Which of course you have no idea whether or not that is the case. Wishful thinking, perhaps.
AS did sign a 3 year contract.
If the Niners wanted it to be 1 year, they would not have caved at all, and just kept it to one year like they did last year.
It’s a three year deal if they want to keep him and it’s a one year deal if they don’t. The contract is structured so they can move on if they choose, which is what they had on the table from the beginning. It’s like using the franchise tag without having to pay $14.4 million, which they made clear they didn’t want to do with Smith.
AS did sign a 3 year contract.
If the Niners wanted it to be 1 year, they would not have caved at all, and just kept it to one year like they did last year.
DS……..Your not serious with this comment are you. Smiths problem with the contract was the structure. Not the money. HE CAVED and signed the contract. Which says they can release him after next year without a cap hit. Look at the top QB ‘s in the league and you wont find that in there. Smith is pretty much playing year to year with the 49ers at total control.
@DS,
Really, it is a 1 year contract. This is not baseball where they have to be obligated to it, he can be done after this yr, which I am expecting.
BS,
Same old BS. Doesnt have a clue. Never had a clue. Never will have a clue. You wouldnt understand an NFL contract if it slapped to dumb behind in the grill. You are the Smithers lap dog. Not go sit in the corner and stay. You’ll know it’s a one year deal when Smith is finally gone next year! Hopefully he gets replaced so we have a chance to win a super bowl.
Thankfully this will be the last year of Alex Smith.
God, I know I read that before……where was it???
@ Adam,
This will be AS last year, you can take it to the Bank, he should be nothing but a career backup for the next 8 years.
“This will be AS last year, you can take it to the Bank.”
Yeah, we’ve heard it all before. Lot’s of promises around here. All talk, no proof.
If it happens, fine. Move along. If not, fine. Move along.
April 2 2013…….until then rootin for AS…..vs besmirching every step of the way…what a foolish way to enjoy the game
“Thankfully this will be the last year of Alex Smith.”
You, me, the front office and the coaches keep saying that but Smith keeps coming back.
If we have a nuclear war the only survivors will be cockroaches and Alex Smith. The 49ers just can’t get rid of the guy no matter how hard they try.
How much money could the Niner have given AS – the bankroll needed for draft picks?
I’m guessing they could have signed him for like $16 million if they wanted too. Do a 1 year $16 million contract. Put all the pressure on AS to win this year. Treat him as a NFC Title QB with the $16 million (“elite” money to use JH’s phrase) one year (are you really the guy for years to come?) contract. No need to BS anything with the 3 year deal.
If AS does what I think he can, you give him a long term contract after this season. If he stinks it up like many here hope he does, then you let him know with the 1 year (real 1 year) contract that if you suck, you are done.
The difference between the 1 and 3 year contract is this:
In a 3 year contract, if you dismissed after 1 year, you are fired. In a 1 year contract, you simply are not re-hired. If you’ve never worked for a contract job in your life, it makes no sense. If you have, then it does.
Why let anybody (AS in this case) have any extra added sense of comfort with the 3 year deal? You have CK and JJ who are now supposedly the best things ever to back him up. Tell him straight up (like JH likes) that you have no job security what so ever here.
The 1 year contract leaves no question. The 3 year contract does.
There is a difference. It might not be a huge deal or difference, but if there was no difference at all, then players would have 1 year contracts a lot more often Literal 1 year contracts would be the norm. Teams do more 3 year type contracts because if the player turns out great, then you have them for another few years at a set price which is lower than the price would be if you do a 1 year deal and the player is great in that one year. Even if the player holds out wanting more money in year 2, the starting price is lower than if the team had only a 1 year deal.
Randy Moss guys has a true 1 year deal. No guaranteed money at all and his contract is literally for only 1 year.
AS has a 3 year contract guys. The guarantee money is only for 1 year, but don’t go convincing yourself that the emperor is clothed as he walks down the street. AS is guaranteed a Niner for the next 3 years at least minus a trade/injury/or he is dropped. RM is not guaranteed to be a Niner what so ever after this season. That is a difference.
@23J
Welcher
BS,
You truly know how to earn your title. All that garbage you posted and once again it only proves that you are a dunce when it comes to the NFL. Not for long, when it comes to you.
Why the he’ll would the Niners consider giving a Jr game manager franchise QB money?? You’re the only idiot left on this blog who trusts anything JH has to say about Smith. Elite Alex is a fictional title that JH gave Smith. Along with Clitch, Pro Bowler, Our Guy. Apparent the Niners were “lock step” walking away from smith! Lol.
Yeah, he’s got a 3 year deal alright. Just like he was looking forward to competing with Peyton Manning. Who lies more?? Smith or Harbaugh?
Bwahahahaha!
23J
Welcher, welcher, welcher!
Oh.
I forgot.
Welcher, Welcher, Welcher
(Need to be capitalized. It is your name after all now)
Jordo,
gotta back off X-ilicious a bit. She’s a different cat. I’ve counted 5 people that she / he has told not to read her stuff and she won’t read theirs.
And then she quotes their stuff back at them basically breaking the agreement lol.
Even Grant busted her out about her volume blogging. You would have thought that She / he would take a hint and slow down the volume. WRONG lol. That alone tells me, she’s a different cat…. Let her have her Alex infatuation. You are not changing that mind….
Find somebody else to talk about/with.
Thanks bay.
Bay,
BS doesn’t read my posts. Haha
http://www.xboxlivescore.com/profile/DS94everXev
BS tried to argue that just because she dresses her avatar like a woman doesn’t mean she is one. Lol, no dude, I repeat no dude is going to do that. It breaks man law #1, thou shalt not wear a skirt.
Ds you say Smith is Guaranteed a 9er for 3 years UNLESS he’s injured or cut? He is Guaranteed 9 Mill this year. Thats all.
Second you say why sign someone 3 years so they feel comfort? Its this simple. Qb’s that still have nothing to prove dont get 3 year deals with an option to be cut after year 1. How hard is this for you to get? He’s NOT going to make it next year if he doesnt improve on last year. The FO patience is wearing thin. The clues are there. MH Didnt sign here because of the O-line, Warner didnt because he wanted to stay in ARZ, Manning chose the Broncos. These were 3 of the last 4 years.
3rd you write
“If he stinks it up like many here hope he does,”
NO if he stinks it up like he use to do. Then he’s gotta go. I think Smith can improve. Lets see. He’s got more pressure than ever before next year.
@md
A 3 year contract means the team is going to keep the player for 3 years unless injury/retire/trade/drop. It does not mean 1 year.
You are only focused on the guarantee pay. I am saying the team is giving him 3 years of work. Because they are unless one of those things that happen above happen. They are only giving RM and TG 1 year contracts. After this season, they are not 49er employees at all. AS will be.
BigP
Stay the hell away your Mongrel. Freaking stalker. Guess who cares about you? Hint: The answer is one of the words in JH’s mantra from last year.
Very interesting take from Jim Harbaugh. QB guru.
“23Jordon, you’re a *ucktard. Alex is my QB”
Mountain Clown 16,
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you got Internet up there!
C’mon! Where’s your sense of humor? That was funny!
Hey Grant,
When are you coming out with your mock draft (1.0)? Can you start a few blog articles base on *need* position and potential picks? Thanks!~
I’m working on the mock draft this very instant.
Good to hear. The draft is just a little over a month away and on 4/16, the 9ers get their first organized workout. A lot of article opportunities for you…
Whoo hoo!
Love the draft :D
Nerd alert. :P
Will Harbaugh allow the press to watch mini-camps? It’s going to be a long off season if he doesn’t.

“Also, the defense will not feel threatened if Alex misfires on 70-80% of long throws.”
Adam: “Not sure where those numbers comes from, AES.
Recorded stats generally show anything over 25 yards as a “Big Pass Play.”
These were my own personal ‘unscientific’ numbers Adam. While the NFL considers any pass over 25 yrds a big play, my barameter measures the long pass to be the one that stretches the field at over 30-40 yrds, or to be more specific ‘the fly or post’ pattern.
Having seen Marino, Foutes and Donte to Moss leads me to my personal view of the fly or post passes.
But my point is that Alex will need to add the ‘long pass’ to his repertoire.
And he will need to do this with relative success as well.
The last time I seen Alex make the deep passes with relative success was to Antonio Bryant before his shoulder injury/surgery in 2006.
With the signings of Moss and Manningham with perhaps a speedy TE/WR type, Alex will likely be asked to replicate what he did in 2006.
He showed in the playoffs that he could be efficient with when throwing to VD. The stakes just got a little higher in making the long passes with Moss and Manningham in the fold.
I’m hopeing Alex can strike a little fear in opposing defenses this season by adding the long pass dimesion to his game which would be huge boon to the offense and his game as well.
….wht you think or hope does not or will not exist or matter…its just a thought in your tiny brain……the only thing that matters is wins and losses….
Alex got a new contract cuz of one thing, he led to us the NFC championship………….he would have got a contract from another team even if the 49ers didn’t sign…….its the NFL and it always about what have you done lately…….yea that simple!!!!!
so even if the passing stats sucks next year but he wins enough to leads us to the playoffs or SB ……….you thoughts or hope still won’t make any difference….
I really wanted to see oneniner become onedolphin. That’s my only disappointment with this off-season so far.
Oneniner,
It is about wins and losses, you are correct. The reality is, this team won as many games as it did because it had a great defense. So great that it was able to compensate for the lack of offense. I’m sure you will say otherwise, but that is the truth. The only other team to show interest in him was Miami. And according to the Sun Sentinel, that interest was not nearly what it appeared.
“Ross said 49ers quarterback Alex Smith wanted to play in Miami, but he could not justify paying $8 million annually when Matt Moore – already on the roster with comprable production – could be the starter.” – Izzy Gould, Sun Sentinel
AES……Unless your on your knees and ,well you know the rest…with Alex Smith like Onelame he will pop in and say the same lame “tiny brain” social moron” lines that he always does. I and anybody in their right mind thinks you are dead on. Im sure your gonna pull for Smith to accomplish those things next year like I am also. But keeping it real doesnt register with these Smith fans. You have to write every excuse, say that he’s elite, and say he led us to the NFC Championship Game…”which everybody knows his mediocre play rode the back of the defense to get there” or your a hater. One agenda for these Morons. SMITH AND SMITH ONLY. And some wondered why I wanted Smith gone before. Not only for his play, but for Onenoob to whodini again. This Joke leaves when Smith is stinking up the place or could be gone. Did you see him here when Smith was benched for JT, Shaun H, T Smith or when Manning was supposed to come or Warner or MH????????? NOPE! And if Smith doesnt perform like you and I say aaaand like the FO obviously wants….Smith is gone and so is Onelame and his idiot partners Oregon, and Ribico. It pains me to say this but for the benefit of my team and happiness. I hope Smith does become elite and I wouldnt mind dealing with these Morons. We’ll see!
Everytime I think about Smiths contract, I realize why he went to Miami. Alex Smith has the weakest, worst contract of any starting quarterback in the entire NFL. That is something that we all know can’t be disputed. The man didn’t even get a $100 signing bonus.
I dint think we really have to wonder what this front office REALLY thinks of Alex Smith.
Hey, is this ‘Ninermd’ or ‘bring back Montana’ or a half a dozen other names he goes by? Oregon hillbilly,eh? What have you got against hills you boneheaded flatlander? Up here, we just drive over or around ‘chunks’ like you. You’re just jealous because I nominated Jordan for the Don Rickles award. Any award you’ll be getting will not be for anything having to do with integrity or civility. Otherwise, just back up to the trough, I’m sure you know how…
We drive over what???? Tell you what you hillbilly. Get some teeth come down to Cali. So I can knock out every one of them instead of the 1 you have now. Nobody cares about your tractor pulls, soda can shooting or dating cousins. Stay of my porch. Hillbilly Boy! Your a joke. And probably a Seahawks fan. At least you will be when Smith is gone. Now brush that tooth.
What you are wishing for would be great. Of course Walsh and Montana got along just fine with what the rest of the league called a dink and dunk short passing game. They also stuck it to Marino and the Dolphins who had the game you’re looking for. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, just that there are other ways to win big, and Harbaugh has never seemed interested in basing his offense on the long long ball.
I think adding these new receivers will help. If they put them on the field more it will help too. Smith is 6th in the league in QBR with four-receiver sets (even with what little we had last year.)
Should look better. I’m guessing it will.
Hey guys,
This one’s WAAAAY Off Topic, but it caught my eye…
What would YOU do if your team was about to sign a guy you absolutely HATED? I know we’ve got some hard core fans here, but THIS is a guy who takes his football very seriously: I ran across this the other day, about a Bronco fan…
James H. “Jim” Driver, 78, of Eagle, Colo., formerly of Columbia, passed away Monday, March 19, 2012, at South Hampton Place in Columbia after a brief illness. An avid Broncos fan, he abhorred Manning, and evidently wanted out before a deal was done.
Ouch. I wasn’t happy that the 49ers resigned Alex Smith but i didn’t go out and die.
Randy Moss and Parrish Cox made me throw up in my mouth a bit though.
That’s a waste of scotch…. : (
@BigP Hah!
If he hated Manning and loved Tebow..senility had already taken him. RIP.
I’ve always hated Manning, but I was looking forward to signing him because I knew the odds for a second dynasty increased.
So who’s going to show up at the the draft party in Santa Clara? They do have one right? It would be cool if all of us that are close enough to show up where name tags with our user names and see each other face to face. If that happens I would suggest everyone play nice or else I’ll let all my Bigniner maniacs run wild on you, lol
Seriously though, it would be cool to hang and watch the draft.
Cant make it this year. It is a blast. Id be down, but honestly if I ever saw onelame or ribico in person…. Oh my pobre chico. But like Ive said in the past. Pole M at the home games. We are always kickin out there and 9er fans are always welcome

From Kevin Lynch..
.”The 49ers extended their three-year $24 million weeks ago and no matter what other quarterbacks got, or where Smith went to get free-agent offers, the 49ers were not going to budge.
The 49ers offer to Smith was crafted by research. The 49ers probably made dozens of calls to figure out if Smith had any free-agent value. They likely determined that Smith’s value was minimal and that was reflected in their offer. Smith, according to CSN Bay Area, is now the 22nd highest paid quarterback starter. “.
Smith’s value was minimal ! Yep !
