Here’s the transcript of Randy Moss’ Monday night conference call.
Q: Why the decision to sign so shortly after working out with the 49ers?
MOSS: Their upside was something I studied, looked at, evaluated. Coach Harbaugh is a really young and enthusiastic coach and I love enthusiasm, so I think that when they picked me up from the airport last night and everything that we talked about, coming in and taking my physical, going out and working out – a lot of things stood out to me and it was really a no-brainer for me to come and play for the 49ers. I look forward to the challenge to go out there and make things happen.
Q: Why did you decide to get back in the game?
MOSS: I had personal reasons outside of football to really step away from the game. I think it was a family to get back in the game, because I still love the game, I still think I can play it at a very high level and I’m still passionate about the game of football. I really didn’t know who was going to try me out, who was going to pick me up. I tried out with the Saints and came over here to San Francisco a week later, and basically the organization – Coach Harbaugh, the general manager and the owner pulled the trigger.
Q: Why the drop in production in 2010?
MOSS: I really don’t want to get into that because ya’ll ain’t going to understand if I tell you anyway. I’d rather not even talk about that.
Q: Was there every any thought about coming back late last season? Did the 49ers ever contact you when they had so many injuries at wide receiver?
MOSS: At the beginning of last season I really was ready to still play, but at the same time I didn’t really know how things were going to go, so when it got late in the season I just decided to go and get a little more rest. Then once the season ended, I just decided to come on back. Like I said, I’m very passionate about what I do, and definitely football is something I love to do.
Q: Do you know Alex Smith at all? Have you spoke to him during the process?
MOSS: No, I don’t really know Alex Smith, but I look forward to working with all the guys on the team.

Alex’s signing hand must be quite itchy right now.
84 or 18?
81
*stab stab stab*
msc, what is that about?
Terrell Owens, lol. I hate that guy.
LMAO!
If they don’t re-sign Josh Morgan 84, otherwise its 18, but who knows…
Or if he really wanted it would Morgan give it up
Never would have thought….. this
Very interesting, I hope it works!! If the FO is confident in his ability and thinks he’ll be more than just a decoy, this could really open up our FA options and the draft. In Harbs, Baalke and the Young York Jedi I trust!
The Young York Jedi! yes!!! I love it
After reading the titans owner’s quotes about manning and how he has to have him no matter what the and gm and coach says, make me fall in love With Jed when he says stuff like, “That’s not my choice. It’s up to the coaches,” and “I’d like to support Trent and coach, and do whatever they need to get done,”
If Randy Moss is serious about off-field problems accelerating his exit from the game, and that he has a burning desire to bring fans of their feet, this will be a HUGE signing. Moss is the most physically gifted receiver possibly ever. He has had problems with team chemistry, but I think he’ll respect the 49ers vibe. Also, if New Orleans worked him out and it looked great, you have to wonder if he was watching that playoff game against NO and thought to himself, “Jeez Randy, if they had you, you’d have a ring.” Alex Smith over Drew Brees? Harbaugh over Payton? Maybe NO didn’t really want him, but with their guys hitting the free market and Brees demanding crazy money, you’d think a discount moss on turf would look nice for them. Bottom line is that all parties involved with this signing want to win. I like that. VD, Moss, Crabtree and one more wideout FA or Draft… could be epic.
The scandal might have scared him away from the Saints as well.
At 35, Moss understands himself better. He knows that he is better motivated and performs better when he’s in a team that is managed tightly and the players are focused solely on winning. No indiscipline is tolerated, no egos allowed to take precedence over THE TEAM. He knows that losing focus will result in players being cut, as Braylon was. He appreciates Harbaughs EUTM, Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind. Harbaugh borrowed that phrase from his dad, and used it in his first press conference as Stanford coach, which I recall. He and his agent realize that the Niners offer far fewer distractions than the Saints. Most of all, Moss wants to win again as he did with the Pats, even if he catches only catches 40 ball in the season.
Yup, other than that is just a matter of health. If he can stay healthy, you KNOW he will get more than 40.
*it’s
A lot of this could be said for NE, too. Let’s hope it works out better than NE did. If Randy, the man, wants to put out the effort, he could be just the ticket!
Jason Cole is saying that we dropped out of contention for V. Jackson based on this signing.
I wonder if that fool knows that no team can talk to ANY player not on their team prior to tomorrow. Don’t know how we dropped out of contention when we haven’t even spoken to anyone’s agent who wasn’t already a 49er until this Offseason.
I call BS on that report.
He should probably stop submitting his articles early. Either that or he needs to get hold of Yahoo and tell them not to print them before the start of the FA period. *D’OOOH!!!
I want Wallace anyway Ceadderman.
That guy does not quit. The last thing we need is to have Moss (a known quitter) teaming up with V Jax (Mr. I’ll just watch the Raider intercept the ball and do nothing to stop him) and MC (Mr. I blame everybody but myself for looking so bad in the two most important games of my life) as our top 3 WR’s.
If JH can pull that off, that man is Jesus Christ.
Honestly, V Jax is going to be severely overpaid. Its not worth the cap issues the contract will bring long term. I say Moss and 1 or 2 rookie WRs will get the job done. The draft is plenty deep in WR, maybe a 2nd and a 4th or 5th, if the FO really sees WR and a huge need area. Keeping the defense in tact perhaps allows them to focus more heavily on OL and WR this upcoming draft.
It’s called tampering, and it’s rampant. That’s how a 50 million dollar deal gets completed 5 minutes after the start of FA.
I know it’s tampering. After getting nailed by the Bears does anyone think that Jedi is gonna let the Front Office make that mistake? It’s not going to happen.
I don’t care who we get but we need another Receiver for insurance. I’d rather it be a big bodied guy though so there is no drop off in size. We have enough short Receivers. :)
I am very, very happy for everybody: the team, front office, the coaches, Randy Moss, and especially us fans who get to sit back and take it all in and enjoy. After the moves Trent Baalke made last year, I will never again doubt or question anything he does from a personnel standpoint. I will always applaud the Braylon Edwards move. No one could foresee the injury. It makes me just a little sad when folks knock either the GM or the that player for something neither one could foresee or prevent (fact is, I was hoping that if Braylon is all healed they would give him another shot).
We desperately needed B Edwards at a time he desperately needed us.
The Edwards signing was great because there was no financial risk and a ton of upside. It could have worked out better but didn’t. Carlos Rogers was the same thing. Low financial risk and he turned in a career year. Baalke doin a great job.
Agreed.
I wouldn’t mind giving him another shot. Without Morgan on the other side and 15 dropping Passes all over the field it wasn’t a good experience for Edwards having to be the guy to help open up the field for Davis. Ginn couldn’t take the top off the Defense because he’s got fly swatters for hands. I like Ginn, I think that he’s a helluva Return man but he’s not a good Receiver. Moss will fill the role Ginn tried to fill. If the 9ers went out and got Edwards to come back I could see him having a better season than he did last year.
Not 100% sold on this one, potentially inhibits us from filling the position with younger talent like Pierre Garcon, on the other hand it might have freed us up to draft Coby Fleener 30th overall. Perhaps we can utilize Randy in the fly sweep?
Lets assume Moss=1.5million for 1yr and Garcon=7-8Mil for 5yrs. Id avoid the latter. Garcon is also 5’10″ I believe are therabouts. Moss has been a TD machine his entire career. I dont care if Moss only has 3-4 catches a game as long as 1-2 are TDs. He also has the ability to be a phenomenal decoy to open up the run game and think about what we can do in 2 TE sets (especially if Fleener ends up a niner). The NE TEs and Jermichael Finley (only if he could catch) always set up out wide, use motion, etc…it gives the OC major flexibility and the ability to be deceiving…I Love it!!!
I also think we add a WR or 2 in the draft and more via undrafted FAs
Garcon is 6′ 0″, 210 lbs. I like his speed and route running but we’ll see what happens. Gotta trust the FO they’re the experts.
Garcon turned down a 5yr 35mil contract from the colts. I think he wants closer to 9-10mil per season.
Garcon has a big warning label on him. I still want Wallace, but I don’t know if the Moss signing effects that.
…i love it…..welcome Moss…….Alex is making the probowl next season
@oneniner
Do you see Moss starting and playing every down?
I don’t think he can.
Bill Polian likes the move I just saw.
Phil 4.6, I’m pretty sure Edwards got cut because he basically said, “I’m waiting till the playoffs to give my best effort.” Sealed his fate, IMHO.
