Alex Smith willing to be Niners’ backup plan to Peyton Manning

It only took Alex Smith a few hours to get over his anger at the Niners for pursuing Peyton Manning, apparently.

According to Jason Cole, Smith will not sign with the Dolphins unless the Niners sign Manning. Even if the Dolphins offer more than the Niners, Smith wants to be in California. In other words, he wants to swallow his pride and win.

Now, Smith has to wait like the rest of us for Manning to make up his mind.

    YES

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Grant

I don’t at all see AS having to swallow his pride. He loves his team. He wants to stay here as the starter.

      • Donjulio says:

The Dolphins offered him the same contract the Niners offered @ about 8 mil a yr. Plus they are expected to go after Ryan Tannehill in the draft. That makes Smith only a short term solution no matter where he goes. Guy should taken the1st (9er) or 2nd (Dolphin) contract offered and been done with it…

      • DasDweeb says:

Right on. I don’t know why he didn’t sign before all this Manning stuff started (if what we hear is true and the Niners’ offer was on the table), but the guy has shown a hell of a lot of guts, class, and desire to win. If he ends up back with us and PM goes to Denver, I’ll like our chances a hell of a lot more than theirs. If we end up with AS again, I’ll welcome him back with open arms and hope he’s holding up the Lombardi trophy at the end of the season. Even then, the obsessive haters will find reasons to denigrate the guy. My feelings will change if it turns out he was trying to hold the Niners up for more cash, but I’ll withhold judgment until the facts come out.

    • NickRow says:

Wrong, he knows San Francisco is his only chance to succeed

      • Neal says:

Harbaugh must of given him a call and said Alex you are my man, you are a elite QB and we want you back unless Peyton signs a contract with us. Then we have to break up and breaking up is hard to do.

      • Honeybadgerboy says:

Real talk! He knows championship(s) are just in reach for the 9ers organization! Money talks, but championships and cementing legendary status might be a little sweeter.

      • NickRow says:

Not sure if he can pull the trigger and make a decision. Sounds like his wife is calling the shots.

      • rocket says:

Makes sense. It’s the same money and Miami is a cross country move to a crappy team. I’d wait to see how it played out to if I were him. If Manning picks somebody else, he’ll be back in the fold and while his ego will be hurt, he’ll get over it.

    • JasonWebster says:

you want this to happen and your a niners fan? You’re a pathetic piece of garbage. Everything you say about football is wrong you retarded little troll

    • dleo says:

That was Jason Cole’s “opinion” from what I understand. It wasn’t from Smith’s mouth.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

This is good news. If we dont get PM, we get AS. The talk of MH and DG about made me ill!

    • MontanaMan16 says:

This is good news. If we dont get PM , we get AS. Thats a relief. The talk of MH and DG being 49ers almost made me sick.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        Not sure how that doubled???????????

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

“My name is Alex Smith I won 14 games last year, came from behind a number of times, should have been in the SB. Yes I’m willing to be a backup during the prime of my career at a reduced rate”.

This scenario does not play out. If I’m a GM and my guy has this attitude, why would I sign him? I want someone that thinks he is the man, if not, the above attitude won’t win Championships. If Alex signs as a backup it’s Nolan, Singletary all over again. If Manning falls through it’s a good deal to sign Alex and give him a more bling for pain and suffering. If not call Lebron and find a good real estate person.

      • rocket says:

        Andrew,

He’s not signing to be a backup. He’s waiting to see what Manning does. If Manning chooses the Niners he goes to Miami. If he doesn’t, Smith stays here.

    • wtf after such a great yr.?? alex smith did great last season.. i say go away payton we should keep alex smith. we can do it next year with the the help of alex smith not payton we dont needem..

  2. NickRow says:

Alex it like a nightmare that doesn’t go away

  3. Ceedub says:

    Wow, I’m speechless.

  4. Hoferfan67 says:

Sounds like he got a call. Things don’t change like this. Why would he go to Mia to begin with if he wasn’t willing to talk, negotiate, and sign??! This def sounds like the 9ers called and he is helping them save face. Hmm.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @hof

      Who cares man.

Next year, the goal of reaching the Super Bowl is no longer out of the question either way.

That is what we both wanted, right?

    • Ceedub says:

The Niners must have got him word that PM is going with the Titans and they want him back. Nothing else makes any sense.

      • DS94everXev says:

My notion that JH really wanted AS and TB is not as big an AS fan would also make sense.

When the possibility of losing AS became very real, JH tells TB to call AS and let him come back. I don’t see TB making such a move at all.

      • Ceedub says:

Harbaugh would only do that if he knew PM was going else where. JH saves face, AS is back, all kiss and make up. Only way Harbaugh saves face with the team. This came close to disaster.

      • DS94everXev says:

So, it would be a disaster then if anybody but AS or PM were the starting QB?

Did I get you right Ceedub?

      • Ceedub says:

I don’t think CK7 is ready, otherwise he’d be starting. A disaster averted? Possibly, unless you want Garrard, Johnson or Hasselbeck as your starter? That would not be good.

      • rocket says:

Why does JH have to save face? Why does anybody have to save face? It’s the NFL, it’s business. Way too many sensitive people commenting on this.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        @DS94

You said it. Baalke thinks many moves in advance. He has a list, if this doesn’t work cross it off and move to the next option. For me the 49ers are back and they are making headlines, winning, signing the best players, looking for that edge to always be better. Sounds like this owner I knew in the 80′s and 90′s.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

Don’t know if I’m getting the owner part of your post very well.

But, the Niners do have a plan that extends beyond “Gotta see the film.”

    • Jeff inJapan says:

Players visit teams all the time and then decide whether or not that team is a good fit for them, especially if they don’t know any of the coaches or management. So that being said I highly doubt the 49ers management called Alex Smith and asked him to help them save face.

    • Neal says:

      @DS,

“My notion that JH really wanted AS and TB is not as big an AS fan would also make sense” Oh yea that is why he was not paid elite money and Harbaugh flew 3000 miles to see a real QB play.

  5. Edggy says:

Manning will be a Titan …!!

  6. Kyle says:

I really do think Alex is our best option right now. Come back to the bay, Alex!! This guy has been through it all, and been nothing but a class act the whole way!

    • Alison says:

Yeah, AS all the way! Peyton only has a couple good years left, that is, if he doesn’t require another neck surgery at the end of this season….

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Alison
“if he doesn’t require another neck surgery at the end of this season….”

        or mid-season/pre-season.

    • 49princess says:

Yeah a class act off the field. And Captain check down and throw the ball out of bounds on the field. The dude must go!

    • Jkla says:

Ahh isn’t that cute. You can cuddle him at the airport on the way out of sf.

  7. JackcCabe says:

Finely, some good news. Thanks Alex.

  8. est_29Jan94 says:

im happy to hear that. im kinda leaning toward wanting alex to be the starter. peyton’s injury issues are making me a little nervous but whoever the starter is just win. GO 9ers!!!!

  9. jayRoc29 says:

Manning signed with the NINERS already 3 yrs $40 million

  10. msclemons67 says:

This is based on a tweet from a guy *I* beat in football picks last year?

And seriously, if Alex is really willing to crawl back to the team that booted him to the curb we’d have to question his classification as a vertebrate.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MSC, there is so much (90%) that hasn’t been uncovered in this FA circus the last couple of days. It may not all be on AS or the 9ers. Stay tuned…

    • Nick S. says:

      Cole is legit… just stop.

    • Dan says:

Always love anonymous goofs on message boards questioning Smith’s character. Proved every single person wrong, succeeded against all odds, has shown an *unusually* strong mentality…….but the keyboard corps isn’t impressed.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @msc

He finally won here. Think he wants to really leave after so much crap from everybody but his teammates?

    • rocket says:

The question is, did they really boot him to the curb? He had an offer, didn’t sign it, the Manning possibility presented itself, and they are trying to land a superior player. I don’t see why this is such a horrible thing for the team to do. I don’t think Alex will let his hurt feelings force him to go to Southern Florida and play for a miserable team and owner either, unless he has no choice.

      • AHHHH says:

we booted himt o the curb? when did we release him? o ya like when manningham signed with the rams. funny how many people think one media articles means so much for football players. come back to reality

    • 49princess says:

      couldn’t agre more

  11. big biner says:

which mean, They offered him petty change and his wife was like, “oh heeelllllllllllllll no!!!!!”

  12. jeremy king says:

Alex has been bashed the last 7 years under how many different coaches? Then we give him a good coach and look what he did even with our weak receivers. Not to mention he showed loyalty by staying with the team last season even though people wrote him off. give the dude a break

    • 49princess says:

Okay we’ll give Alex a break. How about an eternal spring vacation break from the 49ers

  13. Donjulio says:

According to Yahoo Sports: Alex Smith, who has been the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback for the past seven seasons, was reportedly negotiating a contract with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night.

The Dolphins have offered Smith a multiyear deal worth $8 million a season, according to the Denver Post, which is citing an NFL source. Earlier in the day, ESPN reported that Smith met with Dolphins officials for 5 1/2 hours at the team’s Miami-area facility.

  14. Mj says:

Darn it Smith won’t you leave already! I hope Manning signs with the 49ers…. We got the coach now we need the QB!

And what the article doesn’t tell you is WHY Smith is willing to wait. He got a 3-yr, $24 million contract offer but he is unhappy with the amount of the contract that is guaranteed. Waiting till AFTER gets him more guaranteed money.

  15. Tempt says:

49er fans looking real classless and extra trolly over this whole ordeal. I’ll take either quarterback, and dump the sometimey a$# 49er fans swarming the net.

  16. Mark says:

Now I want to see him come back.

  17. IslandguyJ49ers says:

That sound the 49ers office a-hole unpuckering. I like this backup plan. You either upgrade or if Manning gets greedy and chooses money over championships then I am good with bringing back Alex no love lost. I think he understands you have a chance at Manning you have to go for it. But worse case Manning chooses elsewhere, we see if Alex is indeed getting better with the QB whisperer and give CK or Tolzien a chance to mature ala A. Rodgers.

    • Miles says:

wait, so they are about to take a deuce? or something worse? I’m not sure I like where this is going…

  18. Razoreater says:

It’s been widely reported that Manning, not his agent, has been dealing with teams directly. This lends credence to the rumor that the ‘secret’ 49er brass visit to Duke last Tues – before TEN and DEN were offered the chance – was Peyton’s idea. This doesn’t mean too much from the outside, but considering that the 49ers have been busy adding pieces to their offense while still waiting for Manning to decide while the other teams have been idle or losing other pieces of their offense, it has to figure into Manning’s decision as to where he thinks he’s the best fit.

    • ninermd says:

I don’t think the manningham deal was really for Peyton, it was for a non Peyton team. Like Alex smith or ck. when I heard they signed him this morning I was thinking manning ain’t coming.

    • Ceadderman says:

I would agree with you but the piece that is desperately needed is a FA Guard. Gotta protect your investment in Manning if you are going after Manning. Since Steve Hutchinson was available until the Titans got him I’d say that it’s looking more and more like Manning is not going to the 9ers.

Of course when Smith finally started negotiating with a team it looked like Manning was coming to the 9ers.

Might be that Harbs called Smith and smoothed some ruffled feathers. If I were Smith I’d be very wary about Caddying for Harbaugh in the future. :/

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

If I were Smith, I’d be very wary about anything Harbaugh said. Turns out “We’re 100% in lockstep that Alex is our guy” actually means, “Alex is our guy, unless some other guy we want comes along.”
Might be good football. It’s rotten human relations.

  19. ninermd says:

The Alex smith saga= Friday the 13th part 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9…… Like I said until this guy signs a contract with another team. He will remain here for his entire career. Nobody else wants this guy, he has nowhere to go if he wants to succeed. The 49ers got him by the balls. He will crawl back with little dignity and sign for what he is worth. I’ll say it now. If he comes back he will not start if there is a competition at qb. Harbaugh better work harder with this kid. 2 years and all of these weapons, he’s gotta produce THIS year!
My gut never lies and I’m telling you. Manning to Denver smith back here.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, you did say that. I’ve always thought PM would be a titan. Let’s see if he is a Bronc (you) or titan (me). What a circus. LOL

    • Ceadderman says:

      “Nobody else wants this guy”

Seems the Dolphins don’t agree with you. I’m sure there are other teams that don’t either but this all happened in the span of 3 days and Smith was looked upon as a guaranteed 9er before Friday. Takes time for these things to develop when you have a HoF QB on the FA list. ;)

      • Dan says:

100% chance you were sitting here last year at this time saying “the Niners can’t go anywhere with Smith!!”

      • Dan says:

(that was supposed to be for the original comment)

      • ninermd says:

Ceader…. Ok so the dolphins talked to him, they are also pursuing gerrard. Be honest. Smith has no where else to go. He’s going to sign cheap. You can’t strong arm the 49ers.

      • ninermd says:

Dan… Yes I did! And? That’s no news flash. Smith earned my respect as a 49er season ticket holder. 100 percent chance you thought the same. There isn’t a single person on this planet that thought the 49ers were going to
Be 13-3…. Oh and thx to the defense and Akers the offensive MVP we were 13-3. Don’t get it twisted I said I’d give smith another year to get better, but by NO means was he the qb I want to see again. He’s got 1 more year to improve IMO. Or it’s back to “hit the road smith” plain and simple. In harbaugh I trust.

      • jgwindsor says:

as for the AS front i have the same feelings….AS did earn respect and AS still needs to demonstrate he can own this offense…..

i do actually think CK would benefit more from peyton in the film room than CK could ever get from AS…my opinion of course…..and this is to me the greatest benefit peyton could bring this team……
        ..

    • Ceedub says:

Manning to Tennessee, Alex back to SF. Otherwise, I concur…

  20. Ceadderman says:

WTH is going on in 9erland?!?

Topsy turvey world is looking very nice for my retirement years. O_o

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Cead

Probably the same thing that happened all this time.

Just now we have instant media coverage of everything, so we get immediate reactions to everything.

Not a good thing at all in my opinion.

  21. bigMike says:

Dam Alex making me feel for wanting Peyton. Alex is loyal and its obvious he wants to be a niner. Screw Payton. Welcome Back Alex. Check out Alex’s Stats since middle of 09 season. Top 10 QB.

  22. Ceadderman says:

I predict a lot of 9er fans are gonna be filling their tubs and slitting their wrists if Smith remains a 49er. This is just nuts.

    • DS94everXev says:

It would make the blog a lot nicer environment no doubt.

    • ninermd says:

And if manning signs. And ds your comment stands for that too. Wheew. Smith isn’t going anywhere.

      • DS94everXev says:

That was my hope all along md. That AS stays here and does not go anywhere. And leads us to another trophy very soon.

      • ninermd says:

We all know ds. But you know I’d take manning any day of the week. I just wonder when smith comes back knowing the 49 ers don’t feel he’s elite “again” if it messes with his confidence. It’s going to be a crazy couple of days.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

Please see my post at March 18, 2012 at 7:03 pm

I know we often disagree md, but I think this is something we could agree on.

  23. Avetron says:

Alex is a great athlete and a very good person, whose character has been strengthened by adversity. Manning will sign with TEN and Smith, with an improved WR corps in SF, will have the better season of his career. Go Niners!

  24. IslandguyJ49ers says:

You are indeed a hater and not a niner fan if this is not good news to you. A chance at Peyton who will be a niner unless he chooses not to be a niner. Then why not the QB who led you to NFC championship. I believe people can get better at something the more you work at it. To assume failures in the past means u will never succeed….that’s just downright depressing. I will always be a niner fan and cheer on the 53 whoever they are, hopefully with Manning but if with Smith then cheer on. If you just want to hate and not want him to be a better QB, just because… then go jump off a bridge.

  25. Razoreater says:

A friend in New Orleans told me a couple of months ago, when the infighting began in Indianapolis, that Peyton’s brother, Cooper, said the Mannings didn’t care what the Colts did, they had a 7 acre estate in Marin County. Telling, if you can validate it.

  26. Neal says:

Poor Alex he can’t get any respect, Harbaugh must of called him and said Alex you are our man, you are a elite QB and we really want you back, unless Peyton signs a contract with us, and then we will have to break up and breaking up is hard to do.

  27. 40yrfaithful says:

Classy,Classy,Classy. The Niners and all us fans owe Alex big time if this is true. I hope he can somehow stay even if we do sign Manning.

    • ninermd says:

We don’t owe him $hit! One year of booing him out of 6 years of crappy play, 50 mill plus and still being employed is far enough. Poor rich guy!!! Lol WOW! Smith will be just fine either way.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, MBarrows mentioned that AS gives a large portion of his pay to youth in CA through his foundation. BTW, MM stated that the 9ers restructured his salary a couple of years ago and he’s made $39M to date (around 5.5M a year).

      • Ceadderman says:

6 years of Crappy play? Either you aren’t a 9er fan or you need to leave your shoes and socks off to learn how to count MD. ;)

Cause before Last year Smith only played 4 Complete Seasons and not all of them were complete or in order. I thought that he played quite well last season and apparently Harbs did too otherwise Smith wouldn’t even have gotten an incomplete offer this Offseason.

I’m still not happy with this whole disgraceful process but at least Smith is being classy about it all. Much more tolerant than I would have been in his place. :/

      • msclemons67 says:

He’s right MD. You have to amend that to 4 years of crappy play, 1 1/2 years on IR and 1/2 year on the bench.

        Because that is much better.

      • ninermd says:

Cead. He was injured for a 2 seasons.. Almost 2 seasons and got beat out two of the others. Can’t blame him for getting injured, but getting beat out I can. It’s been a horror story for 6 years with this guy. Last year was better, but Jason vorhees is coming back for part 8. I’ve been a fan since the 80′s I know what I’m talking about.

      • Ceadderman says:

Got beat out? In whose competition? Nolan/Sing? Or Harbaugh?

Where are the guys that “beat him out” in competition?

Any of them post a 14-4 season with 6 4Q comebacks? Any of them tie the NFL record for TDs’ from a TE? How about their Red Zone completion percentage? Are they top 10? C’mon bro I know you hate Smith but you have to give the man more credit than you are. Dude is better than every QB that was on the 49ers Roster from ’05 to ’11.

JTO threw more Picks in 5 games than Smith did this whole last season for cryin out loud. That’s the guy that Martz considered better than Smith. xD

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Alex’s deficient play was linked to lack of coaching. Sure he’s no Joe, but who is. He showed growth last year and did enough to get us to the SB. The 49ers had 5 chances
(deep pass to kw, 2 fumbles by kw and 2 missed interceptions) and didn’t cash in. If Manning goes elsewhere sign Alex.

      • ninermd says:

Ceader. It doesn’t matter who or why he got beat out. He got beat out because he sucked. You bring up the redone…. How was his stats between the 20′s? How come he never played good before the team was down by 20? How come his redone stats were garbage this year? How come he couldn’t throw for 300 yards once this year, how come our fg kicker set records? Why did the FO want different qb’s the last 3 years? His game has stunk for years. There is a reason 1 team was willing to sign him this late. It’s because nobody thinks he’s as good as you do. You’ve made excuses for him for years now. He didn’t turn the ball over this year. Other than that he still needs improvement. I don’t hate Alex smith. I hate the excuses and the people that make excuse for him. You can’t blame coaches or anyone else. For his int’s for his accuracy issues, for his lack of field vision. Those have haunted him for years and they fall squarely on his shoulders. You can’t compare him to the good qb’s of the league because you will use the new OC’s excuse. You smith fans have tried to cover every angle with an excuse. I never have and never will buy them. His play speaks volumes. Not your excuse that HE himself have debunked in the past. I hope we are clear now on my stance with smith. He’s earned another year to IMPOROVE but I would still take manning any day. And it’s going to be smith next year. IMO!

      • DarrelB says:

Alex didn’t get all the money in that big rookie contract. He renegotiated that contract and has been playing at a very reasonable price for years now. I agree he will be fine either way because he has made a lot of money and he is smart. But he hasn’t done to the Niners what Zito has done to the Giants.

  28. MidWestNiner says:

    Grant,

Where do you get that Smith is swallowing his pride? Did it ever occur to you that his family is playing a bigger role?

    • msclemons67 says:

The 49ers low-balled Alex in contract negotiations and then tried to replace him for the 3rd year in a row.

“Swallowing his pride” is putting it gently.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Don’t forget that they never gave him a decent WR corps. EVER.

      • msclemons67 says:

What does a decent WR corps have to do with them trying to replace Alex every year?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Please explain in detail msc.

I don’t follow you or Grant.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MSC, no different and probably worse were the jets players that called out MSanchez anonymously throwing him under the bus, yet he gets an extended contract by the FO.

      • msclemons67 says:

@Hofer it’s a pretty huge difference between Jets’ players anonymously throwing Sanchz under the bus and the 49ers FO publicly trying to replace Smith.

For 3 years in a row.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MSC, just prior to that the jets org were questioning whether he was the right guy at that position. Then, a month and a half later extend his contract.

      • msclemons67 says:

Hofer, it doesn’t change the fact that the 49ers have tried to replace Alex 3 years in a row and he keeps crawling back.

      • ninermd says:

Lemons is right. They don’t see him as the future. Elite qb’s don’t get pushed aside for three other qb’s 3 years in a row. I’m telling you. This guy sold his soul to someone or something. This is incredible. NO player or franchise has ever been through this much together. It reminds me of an old girlfriend that I hated but still kept for conscience. We’d break up just to make up… Lol now that’s a tune for the smith and 49ers relationship.

      • rocket says:

        MSC,

They’ve been trying to replace him 3 years in a row? I don’t think that’s accurate. Last year Harbaugh went public with his desire for Smith to resign. The year before, Singletary said Smith was his guy. I think you are thinking back to 3 years ago when they brought Warner in.

      • rocket says:

And that was when Smith was coming off of his second shoulder surgery and the Niners really didn’t have a plan at QB other than Shaun Hill.

      • ninermd says:

Rocket after Warner they wanted Matt hasselbeck. This year it’s manning. That’s 3 straight years.

      • rocket says:

        MD,

No. Mistaken on both counts. They wanted Hasselbeck to come in and compete for the job with Smith. The year before Smith was the unquestioned starter under Sing. You guys are getting some years mixed up.

      • ninermd says:

No rocket!!! They wanted MH to come in and start. He turned down the 49ers because of the O-line. I posted that last year. This is the 3rd time they tried to go another direction. We can argue all day, but what qb that’s wanted does this even happen to once? Think about that. Smith is crawling back for a reason. He can’t succeed with the 1 team interested in him. The 49 ers are in the driving seat. And don’t think to highly of smith. You can’t argue that.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

rocket is right on this one.

If you need me to, I can find an article pertaining to what rocket says is all true. MH didn’t want to have to compete for a starters job. AS was ok with it.

      • rocket says:

        MD,

You have never, nor has anyone else posted an article that said the Niners wanted Matt Hasselbeck as their starting QB. It doesn’t exist because it wasn’t true. The team never named the vet they wanted to bring in to compete with Smith, and Hasselbeck said the Niners had been an option for him.

That’s a far cry from the Niners wanted to replace Smith. They wanted comepetition. The season before he went into the season as the unquestioned starter under Singletary. You screwed up your timeline.

49er/PM will make announcement on Tuesday.
Big story tomorrow; NFL hands down penalties to Saints for ‘bounty-gate.’

I said this morning that there is a possibility that Alex comes back and plays behind Payton. No problem with that at all. I’d be all in!

  31. Magic16 says:

As a 49er Fan , I really hope that Alex will be our starter this season !
Its our best option right now, and he deserved that !!
To all the fans that cant wait to sign Peyton…can you all imagine what would happen if he is under center in a game like…let say…the Baltimora game of last season ? ( just to refresh the memory…Alex, that is MORE MOBILE than Peyton…..was sacked 6 times !!).
Now…how much confortable are you knowing that Peyton is a couple of sacks away froma career ending injury ?
Would you really put so much money on a 36 years old player that had 4 neck surgeries and more ?

    • ninermd says:

Yep. If the 49ers front office and dr’s think its ok.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

And if they don’t, are you equally excited and happy?

      • ninermd says:

Ds I trust harbaugh. And stated from the beginning that manning wouldn’t sign here, because smith is Jason vorhees. Lol but I’m a 49er fan first and although I would take manning first I think smith deserves another shot to improve. Can you say the same about manning? A lot of you guys have been pretty moody when hearing smith wasn’t coming back and manning was coming. I don’t think that’s fair. Manning has never stunk here. Smith has. There’s bitter and bad feelings with smith here. And to a point it well desrerved. Not to hate the guy or call him out of name, but for the betterment of the team. 9 years of losing after 20 plus years of winning isn’t going to be pretty for longtime fans. And with the coaches, owners and players we’ve had those 9 years. Nobody was safe from fans wraith.

So knowing smith is coming back I’d be ok with giving smith his second shot with harbaugh. I just would rather KNOW we’re going to the Super Bowl with manning instead of a maybe or we’ll see with Alex smith. Last year was an exciting year. So I’m stoked to see what will happen this year.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

“Manning has never stunk here. Smith has.”

So, if PM sucks, and we pay him a ton more money (we will need to do that, as I am sure any team which lands him knows) and we miss out on getting great players now or next year due to picking up PM right now, would you feel better?

My answer is “no.” By the way, after last year, if PM does not at least equal a Title game OT loss appearance (basically he needs a Super Bowl appearance), than one can say we didn’t upgrade anything to have any real impact. And at a huge cost to the future of this team, we got zilch to show for it.

Fans like me have been around the whole time watching the losing as well md. I didn’t like losing. I really didn’t like losing that title game. But, I can’t lay the blame on AS for all the losing the last 9 years (7 with AS) or all on AS for the playoffs or title game in which he threw 2TD and 0Int.

If I am going to blame somebody, it would not be the guy who got us most of our points in the title game we lost in OT. He gets blame for not winning. But not for losing it. Of course the other 51 players and coaches also get the blame, so that is a wash.

      • ninermd says:

Lol ds…. Manning has never and will never suck. So I can’t comment on your paragraph. I know you don’t like him. And it makes me scratch my head. You know your probably 1 of 6 people in this world that think the way you do about this issue. Manning is 10 times the qb smith is. You can argue that all you want with playoff stats and such, but it really makes you look foolish. There’s a reason 12 teams and every team in the league inquired about manning and smith is looking for scraps. That’s just the flat out facts. Manning is far superior to smith. It would be a waste of time for me to argue that. Plus if I posted and compared their stats I’d need a whole page for manning and a lot of time. It’s a waste of time ds

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

While you are looking up PM’s playoff stats, keep track of how long it took PM to throw 6TD passes.

How long did it take him to throw his first playoff Int?

How many tries to get his first playoff win?

His one successful year (the one which he won a Super Bowl), what kind of stats did he put up that playoff year?

How good were PM’s stats every other year in the playoffs?

I hope you enjoy your evening with your loving family md. Good night.

    • big biner says:

    • IslandguyJ49ers says:

Our best option not sure about that. But if we cant upgrade to a healthy manning I prefer a 13-3 QB with a fumble shy of Superbowl who had no offseason coming back and giving it another shot yr 2 than someone not name Manning or Smith that is actually available out there right now. This is great news. Manning if no Manning we get an improved NFC West Championship game contending squad back. AND we have money to go get some more improvements.

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        Exactly!!!

      • AES says:

Now if you can convince the 49ers brass of that you may be on to something.

Alex succeeded because of Harbaugh, period. Harbaugh took Alex out of the trash heap, and even Alex’ most ardent followers know that. If Alex comes back, I’m good with that because we know what he can do in this system. But if we can ink PM i’ll be estatic. If we can sign them both, it would clearly be one of the biggest FO coup’ of the past 20 years.

Harbaugh, as we’ve seen here and during his run at Stanford is:
        1. A QB whisperer.
        2. An accute judge of the QB position.
        3. A ‘risk’ taker (Alex was a risk IMO).
        4. A great motivator.
        5. A WINNER!

The 49ers will be contenders as long as Harbaugh is at the helm. So even if we don’t sign either Alex or PM, the 49ers will continue to thrive.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Anticipates pressure, slides in the pocket, quick release, forget about it.

    • Crab15 says:

Magic16 – In 2010 (Mannings last year played) he was the least sacked QB in the NFL! Don’t come in here with that nonsense rookie. PM has one of the quickest releases ever! You can’t sack a quarterback if he doesn’t have the ball in his hand!
      Run along now.

      • Ceadderman says:

Behind Jeff Saturday and the Colts Offensive Line no less. C’mon 15 you know as well as anybody how good his Line was. Alex Smith could only wish for a Line that is half as good as the Colts Line was for Manning.

But I forget, the other 10 players are just magically better when Manning walks out onto the field.

      • Crab15 says:

Ceadder – Alex Smith is much improved at avoiding the rush but Manning is one of the best of all time at it. Great O-line or not PM has mastered the art of not being sacked.

      • Ceadderman says:

If he signs with the 9ers we will see 15, we will see. Cause I don’t see the 9ers being able to replace Snyder very easily if Manning signs with the 9ers.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        First round draft pick.

      • Ceadderman says:

Okay I’m game Grant what are you referring to? Smith or a Lineman?

Even first round picks need protection. ;)

      • Crab15 says:

Ceadder – Grant was referring to drafting a guard (to replace Snyder) with our first round pick (#30) in the draft.

      • Ceadderman says:

Ahh okay makes sense, but what if Baalke uses that pick to bring in Wallace? Which I would like to see happen now btw since all the FA Receivers are pretty much gone.

    • MangoMan says:

Actually, Alex was sacked 9 times in the Ravens game…but that’s not the part of your comment that is so completely wrong. Let’s be clear – Peyton Manning is a much more mobile quarterback than Alex Smith. Quarterback mobility has little to do with taking off with the football and almost all to do with the ability to move within the pocket. Manning is one of the best of all time at being able to move around in the pocket to buy time and avoid sacks. That’s why he is always among the league leaders in fewest sacks taken, despite the fact that he’s never really had a good offensive line. Sure, Alex can scramble when he has to, but that doesn’t mean he is a MORE MOBILE quarterback. That is completely false.

All that said, I’d be happy with either guy under center (with a reasonable contract in place). Rooting for the Niners to sign Peyton, but Alex at 3 yrs 24 mln still leaves the team in a position to get more talent and be very competitive.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @mango

Wasn’t Saturday a multi-Pro-Bowl OL Colt who spent a lot of time being a bad OL then on the Colts. Considering how great PM was, the Colts must have been stupid to leave their franchise to such bad OL.

      • Ceadderman says:

“Peyton Manning is a much more mobile quarterback than Alex Smith…”

        O_o

        HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

        o_O

      • MangoMan says:

DS – yes, Saturday was an All-Pro. Do teams normally field one man offensive lines? Most teams have 5 guys up-front at last check. How many first or second round draft picks do you see on the Colts’ line for the last ten years? Take a while to look it up and you’ll be surprised to see almost none. Why? Manning made them all look good. That’s what superior QB mobility, the ability to read a defense and the understanding of when to get rid of the football are all about.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ceadd

He has the right to that opinion.

Though I really wonder how he got it, or did he mistype?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Mango

How has PM done since Saturday left? Seriously, I don’t really know.

But I do know the last few years, PM has been smashed and crushed over and over again.

I also don’t know what the draft position of the guy has to do with anything. Where was Nicks drafted (the Giants WR)? The Niners only spent one 1st round pick on an OL in BW’s days. Yet, JM managed fine. And he had plenty of time to find WR’s against a lot of really, really good defenses. He sure had a lot more time than AS has had in his career to find an open WR. The time a QB has to find a receiver has little to do with the QB. It is mostly the OL. And no QB is going to be good game after game when his back foot plants and he is getting hit. Not a one. Least of all one who can’t move.

    • Ceadderman says:

Alex was Sacked NINE times in that travesty of a game. :/

      • Ceadderman says:

If that’s Manning the NFL is on the phone to Archie and his wife trying to explain why they let the fight continue after his lifeless body was being mauled by Ngata and the rest of the Pass Rushers.

      • Ceadderman says:

In reply to the conversation above this string…

The 9ers may have 3 first rounders on the Line but they’re all turnstiles.

Jeff Saturday was their Center and he made protection calls. So it’s not like Saturday was some scrub taking the protection orders he was GIVING them. Something Heitmann sucked at. Our Line actually played better with Baas at Center in ’10. Singletary just chucked what worked the year before to install his idea of what an offense should look like. So while the Line gave up less Sacks the Offense was Bell Cow driven. That’s how Frank busted his hip.

I think the Line in ’10 gave up 34 Sacks. The Line in ’11 gave up 44. I would suggest that people look at the film and note that these were not coverage Sacks. These were take the ball drop back two to 3 steps and there is a Defender in your face kind of Sacks. Peyton Manning better have had eyes surgically implanted in the back of his head when he was under the knife cause we lost our best RG to the Cards and Rachal is still a Free Agent.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Ceadd

Well, PM had better get rid of the ball once his back foot is set. If not, he will discover how immobile he really is.

  32. Magic16 says:

    EDIT !!

On the Baltimora game Alex was sacked 9 times !!!

    • ninermd says:

Lol with manning they wouldn’t be stacking the box and daring him to beat them. Look smith is coming back, but he damn sure isn’t the better option. Your fooling yourself dude

      • Ceadderman says:

They will against this Line. You can take that to Vegas and bet on it all season.

      • ninermd says:

Lol right ceader. Still using the o-line excuse. I’d take it to Vegas and place that bet right next to the 6-1 that the 49ers win the Super Bowl with manning. Wheew

      • Ceadderman says:

        Excuse huh?

        2010: 34 Sacks allowed

        2011 44 Sacks allowed.

I don’t remember how many hits the QB took in 2010

But Smith took over 80 of them in 2011.

That’s one hell of an excuse ain’t it.

Manning gets rid of the ball quickly but there were a lot of shots that Smith took around his 3rd step. He turned around an BAMMAGE! there’s Defensive players in his face.

This is with an All Pro Super Bowl winning Center calling protections. It’s not like this is Eric Heitmann or David Baas making these calls. Call that an excuse all you want but you will find out just how bad this Line really is with Manning under Center. At least Smith will tuck it and Run. Manning won’t.

      • Ceadderman says:

“In pass protection, the 49ers ranked 30th overall in adjusted sack rate, which is a percentage of sacks and intentional groundings per pass attempt, adjusting for down, distance and opponent. The 49ers finished 26th in this category last year, 31st in 2008 and last in 2007.” -Kevin Lynch 9er Insider Blog… http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2011/02/23/offensive-line-evaluation/

The 9ers have not put a solid Line on the field since Steve Young was our Starting QB. You cannot refute that.

From 2005 to 2009 the OLine was averaging 50 Sacks a season. FIFTY! That’s not an excuse that’s a FACT.

Oh yes and to Grants unconfirmed thought on using a first rounder to fill that spot? I’m all for it but it takes 3 years on average for an NFL Lineman to come into his own. Larry Allens and Orlando Paces don’t grow on trees. And you should not consider sticking a Rookie Lineman on the field to protect a Peyton Manning if you want him to stay upright. Signing a Free Agent like Steve Hutchinson(yes I know Tennessee did that already) is a better way to go when you have a questionable position on the Line to fill. Doesn’t matter much anyway since Staley is not a Left Tackle. He gets beat more than a pair of Bongos. Excellent RT, sketchy LT. Barry Sims locked down the LT spot when Staley went down two years ago. I think that guy gave up a total of 1 Sack all that Season.

I don’t hate our guys, I just see that our guys are not a quality Line to put in front of an immobile QB who has had 4 neck surgeries in the last year.

I feel like he was going to sign 3yrs/24m but his agent want him to hold off for sec to see if 49ers will cough up more $$. Then this whole manning situation thing came along and I think Alex feel betrayed by his agent, who thought he will resign w the team again.

Did Alex Smith snub you at some point in your life? He took your parking spot? so much animosity for nothing. I understand the actual fans that want Peyton because it would be improving the team. Alex Smith has “tested the waters” and the reality is that no one, including the 49ers, is going to pay him more than below average $$$ at this point.

  42. BigP says:

Everything happens for a reason. Manning is a much better QB, but if he signs with the Broncos or the Titans it is all about the money-not a shot at a championship. The Niners are a way better team then both of those franchises. To me, that would reveal a lot about someone’s character when they already have more money then their great grandchildren can spend.

    • Latino Heat says:

I don’t think its all about money. Manning is from TEN, maybe he wants to be closer to home? Maybe the Broncos ownership was more trusting, it could be any number of reasons which none of us will know but to speculate that its all about winning and who gives him the best chance of winning, its obvious to us 49 er fans, but probably not fair in any assessment to judge financial reasons Infact he’s made more money than he needs moving forward.
Manning should and will do whatever he wants, as a free agent he has earned the right. Im sure at 36 yearsold, it will all boil down to money, family, opportunity, coaching, and stable ownership.

    • Ceadderman says:

The Broncos were a Playoff team with Tebow. How could they not be with Manning?

It’s this kind of thinking that gives me a good belly laugh when I hear some analyst say that the 9ers are his only option cause we’re moving up. Last I saw so were the Broncos. They have a reasonably decent Defense and the sticking point that makes them a better fit is that he wouldn’t be competing in the same Conference as his brother “EliTE”

      • BigP says:

The Broncos backed into the playoffs. They were 8-8. They are not a championship caliber team, neither are the Titans. If its about winning a SB, who is the best fit? The Niners, and it’s not even close.

      • rocket says:

They were barely a playoff team with Tebow backing into the playoffs because the rest of the division was so pathetic. Their defense is not all that good and they wouldn’t give him the running game the Niners would either.

    • exgolfer says:

      Big P,

Until Manning proves it on the field, we don’t really know if he’s going to be the better QB than Smith. Nobody knows for sure what Manning is going to do next year. Nobody knows how much Smith will improve with a normal offseason of work [before anyone goes crazy, I'm not saying Smith will somehow be as good as, or better than, PM at his best]. If you want to say chances are PM > AS next year, OK. It’s these absolutes that everyone is throwing around I can’t understand.

The people who say that bringing in Manning will blow up in the 49ers’ faces don’t know that to be true. Just as those that are beside themselves with joy over the certainty that Manning is coming and will be a savior don’t know that, either. Nobody “knows” how it’s going to turn out.

      • BigP says:

        Exgolfer,
Harbaugh did work him out and the the team wants him. That is good enough for me. Maybe it doesn’t work out, but the staff obviously feels like it would. I can’t go off of anything else.

      • exgolfer says:

        Big P,

What you say is absolutely true about the workout, that is the only thing you have to go by. That’s why I’m saying it might be premature to be “amused” by posters who are seeing the potential downside to signing Manning. Nobody knows how PM is going to react in a game. Nobody, not even PM himself.

If the JH and TB judge it to be a worthwhile risk, then I’m all for it. But don’t kid yourself, it’s still a risk.

The 49ers continue to piss on Alex year after year and Alex keeps lapping it up.

I think “grow some nuts” is appropriate in this case.

      • Ceadderman says:

I don’t think so. I think Smith as got a pair of Brass Clankers swingin tween his knees.

Don’t let that kid’s quiet demeanor fool you. When he threw that game Winner to Davis against the Saints he was all kinds of fired up. Dude looked like he was gonna go right over to their sideline and just flatten Williams. It would not have shocked me had he done it that’s for sure.

I think it takes a certain amount of intestinal fortitude to blow off all the crap he took over the previous 6 years to come back for his 7th year. And if he comes back this year he’s gonna be playing with a MASSIVE chip on his shoulder. That may be what Baalke and Harbaugh want. I don’t know. I do know if that’s the case, they sure went about it in Effed up fashion. They’re playing with the chemistry of the team after all.

But if Smith is the Starter next year, look out he’s gonna be playin like someone kicked his dog and backed over his wife.

  44. RedandGoldKoolAid says:

As much as everyone else likes Peyton Manning I just don’t see him fitting with the 9ers motif. Harbaugh likes athletic QBs (Josh johnson, Andrew Luck, Colin Kaepernick, and as we recently saw on a 29 yd keeper sweeper by Alex Smith). Peyton manning is too robotic in a sense, great qb but not usually what harbaugh looks for in a QB. Am I reaching too far here?

    • BigP says:

His accuracy and decision making easily make up for mobility, which he has never had. The biggest question is whether he wants money or a championship. If he wants more money, let him get it elsewhere. At this stage of his career he should be focused solely on winning a Super Bowl and I think his legacy might take a hit if he goes for one last cash grab instead of a legit championship opportunity.

      • Ceadderman says:

If this were a two horse Race I would have to pick the Broncos. They’re a better fit than Tennessee even if Tennessee is offering him a LifeTime contract and he plans to Retire there to be closer to the Vols (He won’t, his home is in South Beach), I just don’t see them having anything close to a Super Bowl team.

Whereas with the Broncos, does anyone see the Patriots beating them with a legitimate QB under Center in the Division game? I don’t.

      • RedandGoldKoolAid says:

That’s a good point. Peyton manning always was the god of QBs but the lack of mobility along with a body that has been repair several times can be an issue on an offensive line that allowed 50+ sacks (including playoffs). Shoot Peyton might be the guy to get us the 6th one but I guess it all comes down to the price tag. I would really like him to be a mentor to Kaepernick though!!

      • BigP says:

I don’t see the Titans or the Broncos as SB caliber teams. Not even close. I think Elway sees it as a means to finally get Tebow off of his hands and Adams sees ticket sales. To each their own. I just assume that Manning’s desire is to play for a SB, if it is for money it wasn’t meant to be.

    • Crab15 says:

RedandGold – Peyton Manning not fitting in? Would Larry Bird have fit in with any other team? Same thing. Legends like PM can fit in anywhere any time.

      • RedandGoldKoolAid says:

You’re right that was bred to be a quarterback. Not many can throw the pill like him. I was just making my statement based on what jim Harbaugh said last year during the lock out. I forget exactly what he said verbatim but when asked what he looks for in a QB he said “intelligence, decision making, accuracy, athleticism, and durability. Peyton is the whole package except for durability and athleticism. let’s see how this turns out either way GO NINERS!!!

      • Ceadderman says:

Apples to Oranges comparison. Larry Bird never had 4 to 5 300lb Linemen bearing down on him as his Line collapses around his ears.

Alex Smith has. Peyton Manning will soon know that feeling if he signs with our team.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

One thing about Manning, with his numerous checkoffs at the line of scrimmage he keeps the entire offense engaged. He’s even calling coverage schemes.

I know he isnt the greatest QB to don a Niners uniform, but I can’t help but like the guy; he has always handled himself with clas,s and as Niners fans we should at least appreciate that he is–in a world of arrogant, me-first athletes–someone who follows his heart and not his wallet. He deserves credit for that….

I think it applies to the question you pose.

  50. shawnrhod says:

This doesn’t make sense, unless AS is taking a back-up QB contract.

Perhaps AS knows PM is not signing with the 9ers. Everyone in Niner land is trying to fall back in-line and start the healing process before OTAs.

Note to CK: Sorry we couldn’t upgrade one of your mentors. Stick with JH and make some serious progress this off-season and pre-season. Not Nate Davis progress. Progress that forces JH to create a package or two for you and for the fans to chirp for your promotion with some sense of justification.

  51. Doc says:

Trent Balke needs to pull the Manning contract and bring back Smith. He is our quarter back and deservingly so should be treated that way. I like Balke and all he has done but this needs to stop.

I say the ethical thing is to go with Smith.

    Doc

    • shawnrhod says:

If JH and TB “truly” had a legitimate shot at PM and this was all not for show, then there is nothing wrong here. AS is not signed and PM is a living legend that appears to check out. He can come in and make an immediate impact and groom CK (a la Farve-Rogers). It would be irresponsible not to investigate this option. With less then a week the Niners were in and will be out (with or without PM).

I like what they are doing. If AS is the QB next year he better play lights out and get his team around him to take us back to the playoffs. The gloves are off, he needs to take chances and push the freakin ball.

      • Doc says:

        shawnrhod,

There is no doubt in my mind that AS can do all that. All he needed was a coach and some confidence. Watch what he will do with some receiving weapons.

        Doc

    • Doc says:

Oh ya, and thats what you call leadership, he is a man of excellent moral values.

Thats who we want on the field. I know he can play, now that we have wide-outs.

      Doc

  52. Leo says:

If these reports are true, I just went from liking Alex Smith (the person) to loving him. A really classy human being. I wish I could meet him someday to tell him in person.

  53. waterman says:

I don’t know if this question has been answered so help me out guys. How can we afford 23M this year and still sign a guard and the rooks? Restructure everything they worked so hard to put in place? IE contracts, years, money, cap stuff?

    • DS94everXev says:

If they got PM, they have to pay him like $18 million.

There would be no money left for anything but the rookies. And even then, there may be some holdouts. And we all know how well that turns out for our team now don’t we?

    • msclemons67 says:

It would be fairly simple to spread the cap hit to 2014 when the cap will increase by over 30%

$30 mil signing bonus, 5 year deal, 8$ mil base this year and next. That’s $46 million over the next two years with only a $14 million per year cap hit.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @msc

PW is due a huge paycheck like PM was this year around that time I believe.

I take PW over PM. Not even a second thought.

      • msclemons67 says:

What did this thread have to do with Willis. Of course I’d take Willis over Manning.

The OP wondered how the 49ers could fit Manning under the cap. I answered that question.

If the Niners are serious about signing Manning do any of you honestly believe they haven’t figured out the cap ramifications or how it will affect the cap in the future? Between this and the questions about his health my head is starting to spin.

Focus on how Manning will play not the money or his health. They wouldn’t be intent on signing him if either one of these questions were unanswered.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @msc

The Willis point is that the team can’t just sit around looking to get better (?) at one position at the expense of possibly losing known great young Niners (PW and Bowman) without looking at what PM demands are.

Imagine our team if the Niners don’t win and we lose PM due to age/injury/etc. And in addition to that, Bowman and Willis. How would our team or QB (whomever it might be) be better off for signing PM?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jsand

I have a unique ability to know that you can’t just do things in a vacuum.

Most people lack that ability to think like that. They think “Just cut public spending and all the nations economic problems go away.” I don’t. I know if you cut one thing, it will impact you someplace else. And if you go thru with that move, then you expose other parts that were not exposed before, or make things much worse.

Things don’t happen in isolation. They all effect one another.

      • BigP says:

        Rocket,
The team wouldn’t be waiting on his decision if they didn’t already know the parameters of a deal. You are absolutely right.

      • Ceadderman says:

Manning wants $60 mil over the first two years. You’re $10 mil short of what it’s gonna take to get him into Camp. ;)

  54. 99999ers1 says:

Integrity is great and Alex is a class act and all, but can you sit here and say to yourself Alex Smith is gonna give us a superbowl with his 7 years of below average to average play? Either way I’m cheering for who’s under center but I don’t have to be happy about it…

    • DS94everXev says:

I saw us winning this year. If not for some very bad plays and balls not going the way they have all season long, we would be the champs. All with AS.

      • 99999ers1 says:

But what do you think is the chance we pull that off again with no 300 yrd games and avg 1 pass td a game?

      • DS94everXev says:

If our defense is as good as last year, as well as our ST, and AS is better (same system, and all) and if the Niner offensive players are all better (more reps) and the FA’s we got are better thanthe guys they replace and our draft is good, then we don’t need any 300 yard games.

We would be winning by a lot of points.

You may say “That is an awful lot of ‘and’ DS.”

My reply to you is if those things don’t happen, then we are probably losing more games than we did last year, and then why would we care if AS threw for 300 yards?

      • 99999ers1 says:

Alex deserves a 2nd shot at it for sure this year would show if he’s our guy or not. I think the coaches see something different though maybe Harbaugh doesn’t see smith getting us there. I know Harbaugh said this and that but wouldn’t you to get the best out of your players.

    • Ceadderman says:

Two turnovers away from doing it last year and both of them came on Special Teams from a guy that had ZERO business returning even one of those kicks.

      • shawnrhod says:

        True, but…

Great offenses overcome turnovers and pick that young kid up and throw him a deep in route or fade and move on to the Super Bowl. It was apparent by the 4th and overtime the Niners offense had NOTHING. The only way we were gonna win was on a turnover for a score or special teams play.

Manning comes in with our offensive weapons old/new and we are an instant threat… presumable. Looks good on paper right ;)

      • Doc says:

        shawnrhod,

True that great offenses can recover from fumbles. The problem with the SF offense was its wide-outs or lack there of, not the QB.

Oh, and it would have helped if Crabtree caught the ball in the NFC Championship game.

        Doc

      • 99999ers1 says:

I get what your saying Ds it wouldn’t matter maybe I’m reaching here but guess you never know until it happens..

      • DS94everXev says:

        @99999ers1

You are kind of new here if I am not mistaken.

FYI I don’t remotely care about stats. Not for QB, WR, RB.

The thing I care about for QB is:
        wins
TD:Int ratio (tells me if the guy is doing the right thing)
        Come back wins

And as an offense, no turnovers.

      • Jsand3030 says:

DS, if you care about wins, then why the hell are you such a AS supporter? he has been awful hiw whole career-until this year. A true product of the JH system and great defense and ST.. Unbelievable how you cant see that we do need someone that can throw 300 yards if our defense takes a slight step back..

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jsand

Why do we need yards with points win games?

How long have you been watching football? Or are you into the fantasy football thing? If so, then don’t get AS. All he will do is find a way to win 13 games when nobody thought we could win 5 last year (the experts).

AS was clutch when needed. That is all I want from all of our players. See the Philly win. The D gave up a ton of yards, yet held off the Philly offense from scoring more to allow the comeback to take place.

Your point about yards and stats and winning again was???????

      • DS94everXev says:

        Should read

Why do you need yards *when* points win games?

      • Ceadderman says:

I swear Fantasy Football is making Fans stupid.

If a QB doesn’t have a 300 yd 4 TD game he sucks. It used to be all about the W. Now it’s all about the personal statistics.

And not all games are won or lost by the QB. It’s too bad Fantasy Football doesn’t penalize Defensive breakdowns.

      • msclemons67 says:

3rd down performance is a fantasy stat?

31st in the league on 3rd down.

31st out of 32 teams. That isn’t wanting “fantasy football” stats. That is simply “bad”.

    • Ceadderman says:

MSC, when your “best Receiver”(15) is catching 64% of the Passes that come his way and your #4-5(Williams) Receiver is catching 65% of the Passes that come his way and your teammates are getting crazy stupid penalties(Illegal Block, Ginn) that’s going to play a HUGE part in the 3rd Down Conversion Rate. Plus there were quite a few times where Roman or Harbaugh or both called for a Run in a Passing situation either trying to set Akers up or catch the Opponent out of position.

I think we learned a hard lesson on the latter because the Opponents were stacking the Box anyway.\

I could care less if we convert another 3rd down for the rest of my life as long as we’re winning games. How many times did we convert on 1st, 2nd or 4th downs? Just because we don’t convert on 3rd Down it’s not the end of 9erdom. Wins are way more important than 3rd Down conversion Rate.

I too would like to see it higher but there is way more to this than the QB. Is Smith supposed to call time out hand the ball to the Receiver and place it in their hands to make the completion? Pretty much seems like it. How many times did Ginn get hit squarely in the hands where the ball went THROUGH them and hit him in the Facemask. Is that Smith’s fault? I’m sure not going to blame that on the QB.

The dirt Passes, I have to say are probably a direct correlation to him not being confident not in himself but his Receivers when they’re in Coverage. If I know you’re prone to dropping Passes don’t you think that’s going to dictate how I throw Passes? Or maybe it might make me more hesitant to throw in your direction? Chemistry between a Receiver and QB is extremely important.

I’m not saying Smith is Super QB and can do no wrong. Just pointing out that it’s more than just QB and has been for some time.

      • msclemons67 says:

        Excuses, excuses, excuses.

I’m not asking for a QB that is in the top 10 in yards or 3rd downs. Top 25 would be okay. Bottom 5? No matter what the excuses are that is simply bad. Even Matt Moore did better.

Soon the albatross will be gone and the 49ers can begin looking for a quarterback that performs instead of needing excuses.

      • Ceadderman says:

        That’s funny. Albatross.

It’s too damned bad that this is the year that we get some kind of Receiver talent. Cause I really would have loved to hear your excuses as to why Peyton Manning doesn’t look like the Peyton Manning from a couple years ago throwing to the likes of Kyle Williams, Teddy Ginn, Brett Swain and Joe Hastings.

But I guess that HoF talent went to waste with Alex Smith as QB1.

Man, I know you’re smarter than this but it’s taking alot to dig it out of you. I get you’re frustrated but you don’t know how frustrating it is for me to sit here and read myopic ridden thoughts about why the 9ers don’t have a good Offense.

When I see someone target one individual over the many and not call everyone out that deserves to be called out I wanna reach over and choke the everlovin piss outta something. I bet you played the game. You seem like you have. But when you talk about the issues, you focus right in on Smith. You ignore the rest and while QB may be an issue at times you give everyone else a free Pass. Smith has 5 other players to get the ball to. He’s dependent on them more so than they on him. One ball 5 pairs of hands to feed. But the Line was so bad 2 pairs had to come off the field to bring in Extra Linemen.

We gave up 44 Sacks this season! Imagine how many we would have surrendered without putting an extra two Linemen on the field.

C’mon man, you CANNOT blame only the QB for that. You just can’t. It’s the lazy fan’s way out. When in doubt blame the QB. MSC you know better. You’re just fed up with the previous 6 years. I am too. But I’m not gonna take it out on Smith. The kid finally SHOWED YOU what he’s all about. It’s not like he had HoF talent roaming the sidelines making the decisions before Harbaugh was brought in. If he had Walsh or Seifert on the sideline I could see the animosity. But Nolan and Singletary for effs sake. with McCloughan making the decisions after Nolan was demoted from GM and then fired. That’s a hell of a stacked deck to wade through for any QB.

  56. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

What’s the MO on Panthers guard Geoff Schwartz, he’s coming in for a look see.

  57. brian says:

If Peyton comes to the bay and wins a couple of rings people will call him the best qb of all time. Of course he wants that title. Peyton is a intelligent guy. If he comes to SF and wins (which isn’t a certainty, obviously SF is his best chance) he knows more money will follow. He will become the face of the NFL again. When/if he wins the Superbowl next year he will get paid a million just to go to Disneyland. So money and winning come hand-in-hand and he knows that better than anyone. So if Peyton feels certain that the 49ers give him he best chance to win he will be a 9er. 2-3 million less a year won’t factor in his descion. I read he might not want to live in SF. CA is he best state in the country who wouldn’t want to live here!

    • DS94everXev says:

So many ignorant comments, real niner fans know we where 1 receiver away from winning everything. Why change the formula? If kw wasnt trying to make a big play or two we would have won that game. It takes a whole team to win not just I guy. Im not a AS fan but I do respect the guy, all the bashers are idiots. AS did everything they told him to do. What you ignorant fans call “game management”, with better receivers, offseason(chemistry) and confidence hes gained he was gonna blow it for you fans that only think about numbers and not wins. Hope the best for the guy what ever happens. This is coming from a real 49er faithful, please if you get a chance watch all the players play not just the QB.

    • msclemons67 says:

We were one third down away from winning everything.

With one of the best tight ends in the league.

      • Ceadderman says:

Mmmm, no. Did you see Swain pull up instead of fighting for what would have been a TD if he’d have caught the ball? What was the score again?

Vernon did a hell of a job and Alex likewise. Everyone with an open mind even said that Smith played a hell of a game.

Both he and Eli”TE” threw for 2 scores. And the Giants had to get that first fumble in order to get a go ahead score to where we had to tie it up with Akers leg.

Just think, Swain doesn’t hold up with no Safety over the top That’s 6 and the game is out of reach for the Giants with the Defense smacking Eli around the field like a glorified Rag doll.

But yeah, it was the QB. Smith could win 10 Lombardis’ and you guys would say he didn’t do enough. Shut up with that garbage please. I’d say it’s beneath you but obviously it’s not.

    • big biner says:

      Its peyton, that’s why!!!!!!

    • Jsand3030 says:

AS did everything he was told to do. That doesn’t make him a great QB. Ignorant fans? I dare you to call JM or SY or even JG a “game manager.” Yeah we were down WRs but I saw so many open- overthrown WRs, balls thrown behind the WRs and not throwing them open. I don’t care if your a “real” 49er fan or not, your kidding yourself if youre attributing the wins to AS and not JH. Has it been that long that we forget what a good QB looks like?

      • Ceadderman says:

Throwing them open? What exactly does that mean? That’s the most overused rubbish I’ve ever heard in relation to a QB. Either the Receiver is open or he’s not. This is the NFL. Not College or Highschool. The Defense gets PAID to stop you. They don’t just sit on their thumbs looking stupid. They’re there to KILL you. They’re there to make it a challenge for a QB to throw against.

Look at what Davis did this season. He was dropping Passes in one game almost the entire first Half. I forget exactly when it happened but Smith was throwing him good Passes and Davis was dropping them. Vernon looked like he’d finally had enough of that and started catching everything thrown his way for the rest of the game. That’s called STRENGTH OF CHARACTER. You get fed up with how you’re playing and you make a mental line in the sand and say to yourself “NO MORE! I refuse to let it go down like this!”

15 hasn’t done that yet. And not one of the other Receivers have had that moment either. Smith had 6 of those moments this season. The kid is young still and he’s just now hitting the Prime years for a Starting QB. Throw his Receivers open. What a butt-load of malarkey.

Fantasy Football fans should stick to Fantasy Football and not speak about the game. I like Fantasy Football I do. But it’s dumbing down the fans in a really dysfunctional way.

There is nothing where he says that Smith would stay and be a Backup. That’s wild speculation at best, unless there is something new having been reported.

I have to admit I kinda fell into the trap myself, but I’ve read this a couple times now and it’s coming off as an opinion not a fact. :/

  60. Neal says:

Harbaugh called him and said Alex in all likelyhood Peyton is going to sign elsewhere, about a 99% chance ( lie) and if he does, we want you be our QB for the future and we will give you a 3 yr deal but you might be cut after the first year because we want to see what Kaep can do. Come on buddy we can do Pebble beach again and you can be my caddy. Please Alex.

  61. 99999ers1 says:

It’s just crazy right? This is enough to drive a person insane! We have a special team right now and have to make the right moves or else in 1 or 2 years it can crumble.. I don’t want to wait 10 years again for a solid 9ers team.

  62. shawnrhod says:

I think he is going to TN. He can play the Colt twice a year. Remember when he was drafted he told the Colts owner that…”…if you don’t draft me. I’m going o spend the next 15 year kicking your butt…” something like that. Well this is his silver lining.

Not to mention the power teams IMO shifted to the NFC. GB, NO, NYG, Atlanta will get there act together. So will Philly and the Cowgirls and some other teams with almost the right pieces. I argue it will be harder for PM to get to the SB with the Niners. I know our D our D. But we need to score points just like we did against the NO (which came down to poor match up and lack of adjustment by their D).

I think JH knows he needs his offense to click and score, especially in the redzone. Last year’s 3rd down and rz efficiency was unacceptable (full stop)

    • AHHHH says:

haha first off they colts did draft him bud have u watched the nfl this decade? 2nd even if they didnt you think this many years later his decision wud be based off some little comment he made befor ehe was drafted over 10 years ago. come on common sense. an who says the cowboys an eaglers r better has the season started already? i love thes epeople who act like some article some news some signing means this this an this an they think they knows what gonna happen months from now. u sound like one of those eagles r the dream team people. hey how many games do we win this season??

      • shawnrhod says:

A little deeper then that. The PM comment is driving at a frame of mind, about the man’s Psyche. The pattern of behavior from the time he stepped on the field for the first time at TN to take over and told his team we will win I’ve got this. The whole package. Sweet vendetta. I could go deeper if you’d like but you may get confused. Sorry for the insult but your ramble seemed aggressive… no bout dem Eagles and Cowboys… never said anything about a dream team but those teams are always competitive and those are just the second and third tear temas in the NFC. holla back…

    • AES says:

Correct Shawn, Manning did say that. But do you think Manning would rather end his career knowing he kicked the Colts around for a couple of years, or having another SB ring on his finger?
      C’mon Shawn, it’s a no-brainer.

  63. Fred P Soft says:

Alex is the consumate pro. This is the guy we should keep. He’s a team player and we should reward him for his loyalty and sign him now. What Harbaugh and Baalke are doing to Smith is complete BS. I have lost alot of respect for those 2.

    • brix says:

All this is Smith’s fault. Here are the facts. If they did not want him back, why offer him the contract. He had a week to sign before everyone found out about Manning. Make no mistake, Alex was plan A, Manning was plan B. Baalke, is smart guy that likes to make win-win deals. There was no point in offering Alex the contract unless they really wanted Manning. They would have put out the meeting instead of being discrete about going to see Manning and sending out personnel to do a physical. You think in this day and age its easy to keep a meeting like this secret. This was the plan. They wanted Smith to want to sign, not force him to sign. I think Smith realizes that HE MESSED UP. No one else is going to give him the contract he wants based on a season that was mainly due to the leadership Harbaugh provided. Which is why he is saying he will sign if we do not get Peyton. This is all Alex’s fault, if he would have signed, the Tues meeting would have just been a footnote for the Niners this Free Agency Season. If we get Peyton Manning make no mistake, it was because of Alex Smith. You can’t blame Harbaugh and Baalke, like Baalke said: “The ball was in his court”. He doesn’t any better options, the Niners do.

  64. 49erGirl says:

I can’t click the link, but I’m curious if he said he wants to be “in California” or “in San Francisco”. Big difference…

  65. Beldar says:

    America, **** yeah!

  66. NinersSF says:

Alex Smith is still not the best fit if they are trying to build a championship team, AS’ first mistake was not signing the 24mill conrtract, he left himself open and thats why the Niners feint office are talking a chance at PM, AS’ second mistake was going to Miami and trying to negotiate, and now all of a sudden NOW he wants to stay a Niner, that just shows he didnt find what he was looking for.. Either way its all negative press for him… So lets keep it real last year AS success was 80% Harbaugh 20% Smith, Niners have a new stadium coming, need a championship or multiple now, their best option for that is NOT Smith! If Peyton doesnt sign with the Niners… Look to them reaching for possibly Josh Johnson or CK, but Alex wont be the starter

  67. Jeff K. says:

From Alex’s standpoint, this would make the most sense. If he goes to the Dolphins, it will be a train wreck. The Dolphins are in rebuilding mode and will be for the next two years…at least. Alex Smith will be surrounded by subpar talent in Miami and everyone knows it. Alex Smith’s best chance for a longer career exists in San Francisco. My gut feeling is Alex Smith will be San Francisco’s starting QB this year.

  68. FRISCOHOG says:

Just wondering…… How many of you Alex lovers actually own a #11 jersey?

    • Ceadderman says:

Why should that even matter? Some of us probably don’t own a single jersey of ANY player. There are many reasons for this, none of which should matter to you cause it’s not your business.

Being a fan isn’t about wearing a jersey imho. If that’s all being a fan is to you then that’s your deal. But me I bleed Red and Gold and have since I was a kid. I wore jerseys then. I don’t now.

  69. ninerz says:

Alex comes back with the tails, between his legs. Never had the balls to leave this place in the first place, still doesn’t have them now. Show them, how meek you are Alex!

  70. P-DUB52 says:

Its all up to PM. He will chose his destiny. No matter what the outcome is we will end up with either one but dout both. They do have the same agent TC.

  71. Paul Fernandez says:

I don’t think it’s about swallowing his pride, Grant. I think it’s more about not wanting to be away from his wife and infant son…

    • ninerz says:

daddy’s boy. why can’t his wife, come with him?

      • paul f. says:

He has a home in los gatos and just started a family. My guess is he doesn’t want to uproot them so soon. Not saying that’s the only reason but I bet its a factor.

  72. scott says:

who cares if Alex leaves? Last year at this time everyone wanted to dump him, now he is our only hope? I’d rather go with Kapernick. At least we know he has arm strength, and not midget hands.

  73. Bayshark says:

They could draft an o lineman to replace Snyder. How about dude from Stanford. Manning may not be as fast as smith but smith isn’t as smart which is why he is always sacked.

    • Ceadderman says:

      O_o
Do you clank when you walk down the street?

Back to the topic at hand… Drafting a Lineman? Yup that’s gonna fix everything. Thanks for clearing that up for us. Can you do something for World Peace now?

  74. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I’m happy with either QB. What other sport brings this much passion in fans during the off season.

  75. P-DUB52 says:

JH and this squad will be in contention every year with any QB! The defense shows up!

  76. undercenter says:

My congrats to the posters here tonight. Thoughtful insights with some difference of ideas without the confrontatins that have plague this blog for quite sometime. It is quite refreshing to find all of you talking football and not all this other crap.

  77. Bayshark says:

I love the niners and all 53 players. PM is fine and will take us to our sixth ring. All you Titan fans are retarted cuz he is just showing love to his college city. He beloved everywhere not just in Tennessee. Denver fans didn’t you guys drool all over tebows nuts a couple months ago. PM to the niners. AS to the fins

  78. Bayshark says:

Alex managed games great last year but the defense is how we got to the nfc ship. Smith is still inaccurate, period. If we failed to sign PM then I think CK7 is the better option with moss. We need a stronger arm at qb.

  79. bayareafanatic says:

Glad to hear it. Alex as I have said for years will be a very good backup…. Glad to see him embrace it….

  80. Bayshark says:

Maybe Andrew luck will pull an eli, and end up on the team of his choice (sf). I know wishful thinking.

  81. Medic One says:

I think this gives credence to what many of us were saying on the previous blog. The signing of Manningham sealed the deal for me. There just isn’t the cap room for the team to sign Manning. I believe this was an incredible smoke screen to force the division to make some moves while also repaying Smith and his agent for taking one for the team last year.
I believe Smith knew all along the team had no real interest in Manning. It sure did help the team though and here is how: Throw Manning in the mix and all of a sudden Manningham wants to sign. Throw Manning in the mix and Az has to decide whether to pay Kolb or release him. Seattle has its hand forced because now they need a QB to stay competitive. STL is worried who they are going to trade that number 2 pick to also stay competitive. Harbaugh’s credibility would have suffered greatly had they signed Manning.
Above all of that though, the numbers never made sense. Now all of a sudden Smith doesn’t mind coming back? I don’t think there are all of a sudden moments in a league so well orchestrated.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Your reasoning is right on, but are the powers that be that crafty?

    • DS94everXev says:

      @medic one

Manningham is nothing next to Wallace. And Wallace said when he thought AS was the starting QB that he wants to come here or the Pats.

And, if it comes down to numbers (can only have 1 of those 2 WR’s), I dump Manningham in a heartbeat for Wallace.

  82. ZenTwist says:

Ok.. so to make this as simple and easy as possible.. Guys! So your dating this really great looking lady, she seems to know a lot, has interesting, provocative conversation great kisser good massage hot in bed…. And then… Your cell phone rings one day and its Kim Kardashian, She says! “Shes considering hooking up, blowing you for at least a year or two, and just having the time of your life, there’s a couple other guys she considering as well but she really likes “Your whole package” Oh yeah! and would you like to come out and see her moves in action, check out her junk in person?!

    I rest my case.

Honestly no one likes the business side, although there’s a risk?! Its Payton Manning even Alex Acknowledged that. a few years back Joe Montana was in the same position in fact twice having fused disks in his back and he played well before being traded a few years later. No one can deny that Payton is a legend you cant blame anyone for wanting to bottle lighting, I think the niners are good enough to win either way.. Intriguing to say the least

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Zentwist

If the good looking, smart, whimsical, funny lady is Natalie Portman, I tell that little wore Kim K to take a hike.

You are right. It is that simple.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

There are many girls (and guys) in this day and age that won’t go on a first date without seeing a bank statement.

  83. Hoferfan67 says:

“We’re all 9er fans and if you don’t back the PM signing then your not a 9er fan”

Well the same holds true to the rest of you! The team is 53 players and I said I’m all in regardless of who the QB is this year. If AS signs he is the QB and yet you people can’t take it. Get over it and embrace your team! Jeez.

    • ninermd says:

But hof. It seams there are some on here that don’t want manning. Which means they believe in harbaugh’ decision making when it’s about smith but not manning. You see it on here. The same ones that call others haters. Well whoever doesnt want manning and does t trust out FO now. Are haters also. With one agenda. Smith and smith only. I can’t stand those people. Hypocrites to the fullest.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

But they wouldn’t go negative if they sign PM like the blamers. It’s all about the team and winning with PM but if they decide to go back to plan A, then it’s attack mode on JH’s QB. You even admitted AS is ascending and would be shocked IF he didn’t return so why are you doing a 180? I’m all in either way!

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

There are rational reasons for not wanting PM. He’s coming off of four neck surgeries and we dont’ know how close to full strength he is, he’s 35, his performance has been steadily declining since 2004, he’s only ever had to play in one offense, and his playoff record has never matched his in season performance.

I’m not saying I don’t want him [if JH and TB sign him, I'm on board], what I am saying is not wanting PM doesn’t make you “not a true 49er fan” or “just an Alex Smith fan” or anything else. This isn’t the zero sum game that many [on both sides of the issue] are making it.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

During the Championship game I counted 9 Giants in the box during some plays. Would that happen with Peyton?

      • exgolfer says:

        Andrew,

My post was not about Smith staying or going. It was about PM coming. You do realize PM is the current day PM, right? The one that is 35, who’s performance has declined since 2004 [and that's BEFORE sitting out a year with FOUR neck surgeries], and, on top of all that, who’s playoff record is not so great.

All I’m saying is that those saying, “Not so fast, my friend,” on the signing of PM shouldn’t be pilloried for doing so.

  84. Neal says:

Funny how you beaten up Smithers have come alive, at least you know that Harbaugh and Balke don’t love your man crush quite as much as you do and Kaep will be starting in 2013.

    • Neal says:

If the Niners don’t sign Peyton ofcourse. Looks like his wife wears the pants in the house and could not pull the trigger in Miami.

  85. Bayshark says:

Manningham didn’t break the bank and ESPN said we can get a deal done under the cap for PM

    • Medic One says:

You are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Just because you have a block of sandpaper and can do it, doesn’t mean you want to.
This organization has always played EVERYTHING close to the vest. They wouldn’t let “interest” in Manning leak out unless it benefited them.
The benefit here was just saying they had interest. They made the divisional opponents dance at the possibility. Now you are seeing the pieces fall back into place. Its like putting a crime scene back together.
If you look pre-interest headlines, Smith was happy with the deal offered and was just waiting for the minor details to be ironed out. Harbaugh told his locker room, the media, and anyone who would listen he wanted Smith. York said they had no interest in Manning. They picked up Moss to address wideout concerns.
Then the plan is discussed at the golf game together where Harbaugh can assure Alex.
Post interest- Harbaugh has no comment on Manning possibilities. He doesn’t want to be in the media ruining his credibility. Manningham was their target at WR and now he is signed with SF. Smith tells the media he is willing to play in SF no matter what.
This was planned from day one. Smith will sign the contract the same day Manning signs his contract.

  86. bayareafanatic says:

    Hofer,
where are all these “teams” that want Alex? Not fair to just call out Hofer, to all the apologists, Smithers whatever…. Your QB was so great, IMPROVED you guys called him. Where is the interest? Where are the offers? Lombardi was right… Cosell was right…. Grant Cohn was right… BAYAREAFANATIC WAS RIGHT…..
But coach said he was ELITE. But coach said he was the long term starter… wah wah wah…..
I hope I NEVER hear that garbage again. 190 yards a game, averaging one score a game and 20% third down conversions DOESN’T CUT IT. Kaepernick could do that. What Alex doesn’t know is that if he signs as Payton’s backup, his contract will be worth $2million.
I never spoke bad of Smith the man but I’ll tell you this, the man has no pride coming back with his tale between his legs. A real man would have been pissed, taken the money from THE ONLY TEAM THAT WANTED HIM THE DOLPHINS, and if he was good, he would have went out and proved it. No one will respect him now. IMO huge mistake which started with over estimating his worth. You rode the coat tails of your defense and your kicker was the highest scorer on your team. THAT DOES NOT GET YOU A CONTRACT SON….

    • Hoferfan67 says:

“where are all these “teams” that want Alex?

I don’t care about any other team just the 9ers!

    • Neal says:

10 minute standing ovation 5 stars to Bay.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        How nice a pet seal.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Hofer,
I’m just repeating what you said. You said all these teams would be interested. Now you change your tune to save face. They weren’t.
As for Alex coming back I don’t mind it. He’ll come back as a backup where he belongs. No one else wants him…
Flynn a career backup was taken over him. Smith has no where to go. And for an ownership trying to sell PSL’s, how do you sell a QB that no one wants to your fanbase?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, Mia and Sea were interested. The other rumor is that Denv would talk with AS if PM isn’t signed. Evidently, Mia has an offer on the table but I think AS got a call from the 9ers. We’ll see how this plays out. Him coming back to the bay area doesn’t bode well for PM but again, TBD. Are you still *all in* regardless of who the 9ers choose? You said you were!

      • 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Bay ur right Troy Smith is better than Alex Smith, oh yeah and Nate Davis is also better than him. Thats why they are starting on a team!
Yeah you were always right………..that ur full of hate and *hit

      • rocket says:

        Bay,

Nice rant, but I’m not sure why you are going off on Smith for wanting to wait and see what Manning wants to do. If Manning goes to Denver or Tennessee then the Niners are his best option. Getting pissed off, uprooting his family and moving across the country without waiting to see how it unfolds is not Smith.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Rocket,
what other options does he have? To be a tackling dummy in Miami?
Or you can listen to Hofer and all of his made up rumors. Alex has no value. No where to go.

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

Come clean, what did Smith do to you? Did he run over your cat? I know you say what a nice guy he is, etc. But your rantings reveal a real malice towards him. What’s the back story?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Exgolfer, Bay use to post good football knowledge here then he was tainted by Jordo. When discussing PM they throw the “it’s about the team” unless it is AS as QB then it is “the team but not AS” so two faced.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ex

Maybe bay is AR. And AR is still pissed at not being the Number 1 overall pick. So he hates on AS on some anonymous football blog.

    • detroitniner says:

Wrong. Dude wants to win, bottomline. Niners have the best team available. If I’m Baalke, if can get Manning and Smith, if get another Exec of the Year, a SB ring and a fat raise.

    • ninerz says:

It gets him. As a good gesture from the niners. but he was too dumb to sign it. Now, he’ll eat crow.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Perhaps Smith has so much invested in the team and more importantly teammates, that he wants to see it through. As many of you have stated, he’s been over paid for many years so what does he care if it’s 8 mil or 2?

    • exgolfer says:

      Bay,

Didn’t you call him improved, at one point this season? Just asking.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Ex,
calling him improved and calling him good are two different things.
If he was a 3 and he increased his level of play to that of a 5 1/2 is that improved? Yes. Is it meeting my expectations? NO. And obviously not meeting the Niners either. Or this would not be happening. Most of the comments Harbaugh said openly about Smith were not genuine, they were psychological boosts IMO.

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

If only rose to a 5 1/2, why did you give him many B to B+ grades during the year? A B+ seems to me to be equivalent to a 7.75 on a 10 point scale, and a B being a 7.25 [A+ being a 10 and C being a 5]. If memory serves, your rating of Smith for the season would’ve been at least a 7.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Ex, total it out. I gave him D and F games as well. Anyway do t want to rip on Alex. He is what he is. We have a chance to improve the QB position and we should.

    • Bently says:

A REAL man, is a smart man, who knows he was one bad coaching decision away from playing for a super bowl… why would you leave that? Why uproot your family? Pride is the deadliest of the sins… Because it makes you do stupid stuff. The bad coaching decision was letting a guy field a punt after he played one like a center fielder… A REAL man can swallow his pride, do the right thing, and come back and build on the best season of his career, he’s only 27 ya? He was undoubtedly ELITE against the Saints in the playoffs and honestly considering the TWO picks manning should have thrown where TWO niners defenders were right there to pick it, I think he outplayed manning in the NFC championship game. His scrambling ability was clutch. Throwing only 5 picks all year WILL get you a contract when the only thing you can do to screw a great defense over is turn the ball over… I laugh when people say “well, we had like the 26th passing offense”… well ya we were 31st in attempts with a 90+ rated QB lol thats actually good production. If Smith were #1 in attempts he’d have all the stats you could ever want. “Neal” suggests a 10 minute standing ovation for a rant by a man (or woman) who shouldn’t ever father (or mother) children cause he/she has no clue what a REAL man is.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nice

      • ninermd says:

If smith was #1 in attempts we’d have everything we want? Blanket statement. He was told to throw short for a reason. So he doesn’t turn the ball over like he has done in the past. He was elite for one game of his career. And yet the 49ers are looking again to upgrade. Why is that? It’s because they see what the rest of the world sees. Smith is not an elite qb. The 49ers don’t have the success they had last year without a lights out defense. They don’t have the success without a lights out kicker. Those are facts. It’s also a fact that our passing game was the weakest part of the team. You can scrape up all the stats you want. Even laugh at them like you said you do. Bottom line we aren’t Super Bowl champions. And it’s not because our top ranked defense didn’t get two ints only. Smith had 3 td opportunities and failed! Now who gets the credit for even being there? The defense. Why. Because they were consistent and they were great. I’m sick of you smith fans giving every ounce of credit to the leader of the weakest part of the team and giving none to the best part of the team. You need to wise up and realize your in a forty niner forum. Not a stick up for smith forum. Because it damn well could be 49er forum without smith. Numbers before names. And if you played anything in your life or have rooted for this team over the years you would know this. Your fighting for a guy that’s not even on the team right now. What’s that say about your fanhood? Ponder that thought. That goes for you too ds.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Tennessee and Denver made their pitches about what could be if Peyton signed. When the 49ers came in play they talked about now. A defense that brings 11 back, short fields, solid running attack, a pick of receivers. A coach that was a QB and a solid staff. If Peyton picks the aforementioned teams he basically gives up his best shot to win another ring. If he plays the percentages the 49ers are the pick.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

      @Hofer

Nice line about the seal, made me laugh.

  87. Crab15 says:

Isn’t it odd that Moss and Manningham have been so silent after signing with Niners? It just feels eerie to me, as if the’ve been asked to remain tight-lipped.
The suspense is slowly killin me.

    • ninermd says:

I think it’s because they don’t know crap. I think the 49ers know. That’s why they called smith today and told him to come off of that Miami ledge. Manning isn’t coming. It’s just to eerie. Why would he all of a sudden turn down the only offer given to him, after being mad at the 49ers hours before? The 49 ers have been sneaky the whole time, but now we know there game and this decision has harbaugh and Baalke written all over it.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, exactly. We don’t always agree but you don’t let dislike get in the way of logic. You are right on!

      • Crab15 says:

MD, Hofe – We’ll see. Harbaugh is one shrewd dude.
        I say it’s 3M time! Moss-Manningham-Manning.

    • 49erGirl says:

They are new to the team. Why would either of them say anything about Peyton or Alex knowing it could cause friction in the locker room down the road.

Not to mention the Niners as a whole seem to have a gag order against those types of comments. Probably spelled out for both of them before they signed.

  90. For the love of the team says:

I have to say, winning a superbowl with Alex would be a lot sweeter than winning one with Peyton. Though not winning one at all with Alex when one could have happened with Peyton would suck.

    • Crab15 says:

For the Love – That was brilliant!

    • MJ says:

Just as much likelyhood of winning one with Alex as with Peyton. If histories a predictor, even greater chance with Alex than with Peyton. Said it before and say it again: No qb has ever won a sb as the starting qb for 2 different teams. And Peytons 9 wins in 19 post season games doesn’t do much to help those odds.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Probably would have won a SB last year if TG was healthy for the championship game.

      • exgolfer says:

They would’ve also won the SB if the idiot ref who blew the early whistle on Bradshaw’s fumble with 2:22 to go on the New York 15 yard line, didn’t bail the Giants out with that gift.

Coach Brian Billick had the best quote, the 49ers were a team of destiny, but this year destiny went in the crapper.

      • ninermd says:

And they could have won if smith makes 3 throws, and of we had gotten those ints and if the giants would have botched the snap like 02… Blah blah blah. We didn’t win and you guys digging up those memories might get someone punched just because… Ok I wouldn’t punch anyone for no reason but please quit bringing up that game. I’m going to throw up! :-/

      • 49erGirl says:

Jack – I read the last line and laughed so hard I woke my husband up..

        DS – I wasn’t talking to you…. egomaniac.

  91. ZenTwist says:

And Harbaugh doesn’t suffer at all, its not his call its TB’s! Harbaugh was asked to evaluate a QB as he also threw with Moss, if Payton wasn’t healthy enough they wouldn’t have offered.. I don’t believe Manningham, signed because he knows Payton is coming that a win, win for Baalke either way the niners were one WR away from going to the super bowl now we have 2 and possibly more on the way..

Crabtree was exposed in that game, one catch, that’s horrible couldn’t get free from DB’s played him tight, doesn’t have the speed, to break away definitely not a number one. WR. Manningham was schd for a meeting before any Payton talk. I’m glad he is who I wanted all along, this is already a very different offense no matter who is throwing the ball

    • big biner says:

Crabtree was not exposed, he got open quit often per Trent Dilfer. He rewatched the coaches tape and saw him open several times!! The ball was not delivered and that’s why he was pissed after the game and went partying to take a load off.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Yeah.

        Good reason.

And AS had time to throw a great pass a few times, but MC was not open, leaving AS in no mans land.

See how silly this argument can get in no time? Plus I believe Dilfer was looking at the seasons tape and spoke in general. Aikman saw the play live from the same angle as Dilfer (and Aikman is better than Dilfer we can agree on that) and said AS had nobody to throw the ball too all game long WR wise.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS says, ” Aikman saw the play live from the same angle as Dilfer.”

Not unless they moved the TV booth to the end zones. The tape the coaches use is shot from the upper deck of each end zone. This gives you a much better view of the entire field.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Jack

Many fans here said that they can see the whole field. So, they can see all the times the WR’s are open. And when AS does not throw it to them.

Aikman is higher than any of them, and somehow I doubt his view is worse than theirs. Add the fact that they guy knows an open WR when he sees one, and he has as much “cred” as Dilfer.

Plus, I only recall Dilfer talking about the season as whole. Not looking at that one particular game. If I am wrong, please direct the link to me where he specifically talks about the coaches tape and what he saw of that title game with the WR’s being open all day.

Besides, don’t you think that there will be at least as many times when AS had time and the WR’s didn’t do their job and get open to give AS a good target? And why don’t you bring this up as often as when the WR’s were open and AS saw them and just didn’t pull the trigger?

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, you argumentative fool. All I was saying is that the coaches tape that Dilfer would watch from is a totally different angle shot from the top of the stadium in both end zones. I wasn’t talking about anything else.

COACHES, prefer this angle because it helps them see the entire field. I have been fortunate enough to watch this video during seminars with both NFL and D1 college coaches, and it is way better than on top of the stadium at the 50 yard line. Much easier to see the holes in the run game and windows in the passing game.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jack

I brought up something else. Something you clearly don’t want to talk about at all.

Wonder what that means? Maybe that the WR’s were not getting open all game long and that AS can’t be blamed for it perhaps?

P.S. I was talking about the title game. As was Zen Twist:

“Crabtree was exposed in that game, one catch, that’s horrible couldn’t get free from DB’s played him tight, doesn’t have the speed, to break away definitely not a number one. ”

I also asked you for a link to the thing you said Dilfer said. Didn’t think you’d lose your cool.

Maybe you are a little pissed off now after you wrote to me earlier that I am mad that AS is not coming back. It looks like I was right, and you jumped the gun, and you can’t handle that.

Also, you might want to read the whole thread next time. Things might have made sense to you then.

Thus the opening sentence of your post. Not logical. Very emotional.

      • Jack Hammer says:

No DS, you are an argumentative fool. I didn’t touch on the receiver piece because I watched the game from home on TV and know from experience that it is very difficult to see the WR/outside of the field because the camera is focused on the line of scrimmage until the ball is thrown.

Again, I was only trying to let you know there is a big difference between the angle which Aikman watched the game from, and the coaches tape that Dilfer, Cosell, and others watch when doing post game reviews.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Jack

The HOF WR said that MC didn’t get open. He looked at film.

The HOF QB said the WR’s did not get open.

The coaches film must include the same view Aikman had from the booth. Plus, don’t forget all the TV camera angles that he can see as well.

You don’t want to talk about the Title game or the issue MC not getting open when the original poster brought that up. You need to find another thread then my friend. You are the one arguing that something was not brought up when it actually was.

Using your logic, then every announcer should just say, “Gotta look at the film”, right?

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, you said, “Aikman saw the play live from the same angle as Dilfer” and all that I am saying is that he did not.

Was trying to help you know there is a difference, but you are The Master Debater.

      • ninermd says:

Ds… Who the hell can agree on aikman being better than dilfer IN A BOOTH??? The way they played on the field has nothing to do with what they know. Aikman was better than harbaugh as a qb. Is he “better” than harbaugh with x’s and o’s. Nope! It can be silly when you try to make it silly. And it seems your mastering that. To protect smith. He was open. Dilfer who has backed Alex smith from day 1 credibility goes a lot futher than aikmans IMO. And the man with the best angles cossell has better knowledge than any of those players because he has film angles they don’t. You can make it as silly as you want. But I’m telling you your wrong. I seen it in person right in front of my face. The fans around me saw the same things. And every one of us was rooting for Alex and the offense. I know you don’t care what people think, but sooner or later you gotta stop and look real hard at the things you post. Numbers before names. Team before individual. Unless your related to smith, he could give a damn about you defending him. He said it himself.

      • DS94everXev says:

“Unless your related to smith, he could give a damn about you defending him. He said it himself.”

Grant how much water does this tweet hold? I haven’t seen anyone else say this. But I do think it’s funny how one minute smith is upset, then the next he is turning down his only offer to stay in California. Id bet someone from the 49ers eh emm his golfing partner… Called him and talked him down from the ledge again. KNOWING Manning isn’t coming to the 49ers. I think they knew manning wasn’t coming since this morning. The manningham signing only made sense for a qb that needs all kinds of weapons. Not one that would have done great with the ones we already have. Smith will return and manning is going to Denver. Book it! For the record I called this from day 1. :-)

    • bayareafanatic says:

      MD,
remember when Harbaugh first came to SF. They he left and we all thought he was gone. He went to Denver and talked to Elway, then he was in a 9 hour meeting with a billionaire from Miami to go to the Dolphins. We all thought it was over. Then he came home….. Manning too will come home…. TO SAN FRANCISCO BABY…… YEAH…..

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, I still think PM is going to Tenn. If the 9ers sign AS, they still have cap dollars for MW. It will be interesting…

    • ninermd says:

Bay… I would love to believe that. But my gut daaaays ago told me Denver!!!! You got that hof???? Lol and wether he’s goes to den or tenn my gut ever since Friday told me manning isn’t coming and smith isn’t going. Alex ‘Jason V’ smith has been shot, pitchforked, machete’ hung, chopped up and burnt and continues to make another sequel. He isn’t going anywhere bro. It’s a story already written in Hollywood. Lol until he actually signs somewhere else I’ll believe it. When I see it.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, you are a funny guy. Just like with KKolb, TSmith, DMcNabb, any QB flavor of the month you were so right. lol Sorry to say but it’s looking more like PM is going elsewhere like I’ve been saying. Either way, I’m all in with any QB JH chooses. How about you??!!

      • bayareafanatic says:

Hofer I won’t tell you that because the way you propose it, it’s disingenuous. You say you are all in, yet take shots left and right at the possibility of Manning coming here.
You are as transparent as the cheap lingerie at Victoria Secrets….

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, I’ve said I don’t like the idea of PM coming here because I think the org should work with a young QB for the long term. If not AS or CK, get JH’s guy and move forward. I don’t see any history of a 36 yr old QB being the long term answer. It doesn’t mean I wouldn’t root for PM if the 9er QB.

      • bayareafanatic says:

CK could be good right now. I’d rather he sit a year longer and be great. Develop the right way. Why not win a super bowl or two with improved QB play and lights out defense in the mean time?

      • ninermd says:

Bay… Ive been wrong all year?

      • ninermd says:

No MD my brother from another motha, was talking about Hof…..

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

Let’s talk about all the things you’ve been wrong about, shall we? Weren’t you critical of the hiring of TB? Didn’t you then blast TB for “missing out” on all of the big name FA’s? Weren’t you one of the ones calling for Kevin Kolb [to bad we didn't get him, right?], or McNabb [WTF?], or god knows who else you wanted at QB.

      • ninermd says:

My bad I caught that after I typed. I was fittin to say. I know I’m an idiot at times, but damn you ain’t gotta put me on blast. Lol

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I have the archives as backup so I’m not too worried about Bay saying I was wrong when he questioned and criticized many of TB and JH’s moves last offseason.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Yes ex that is true. I am human and I make mistakes. I don’t make excuses for them I own up to them.

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

My point is, considering the mistakes you’ve made [the series of Baalke gaffes were the best, as far as I'm concerned], how do you have the nerve to dismiss someone else for being wrong, especially on something that hasn’t happened yet, and may never happen? One thing is for sure, you’re bubbling over with self esteem.

    • 49erGirl says:

How do we know he didn’t just take one look at Miami’s completely dysfunctional organization and say “uh…been there, done that…no thanks”. Might have more to do with staying out of Miami than it does with a desire to come back to the Niners.

He made no mention of being anyone’s back up or wanting to be a Niner after all the crap he’s gone through this week.

  94. Wilson says:

Grant, you’re basing this on a tweet? Really? I hope it’s true, but if it turns out that this was only the guy’s opinion, you’re going to look like a fool, more gullible even than the average fan, and your credibility will be in the toilet. It may be hard for you to come back from this. I know that I’ll never read anything you write without remembering it.

Now if you have more evidence, great.

    • Grant Cohn says:

No, it’s not Cole’s opinion, he has good sources. He writes for Yahoo sports. He has a top-notch reputation.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Grant

Maybe it is just me, but how often have you used Cole as a resource?

If you haven’t, then that might explain Wilson’s post a little bit.

      • ninermd says:

What your gut saying now grant? I think harbaugh called him and told him
To come back, mannings not coming. What cha think?

    • ninermd says:

Wilson. Take it easy. I think everybody is looking like a fool on this manning saga. Adam Shefter, John Clayton and some of the best in the business have looked like fools so far. Except me. Manning to the broncos and smith staying put. Lol

    • rocket says:

      Wilson,

He’s passing along a tweet from somebody else. Would you rather he just do nothing and force you to find it yourself?

      • Wilson says:

No, I’d rather that the headline said something to the effect that a Miami beat writer believes that Alex will return regardless. The tweet is extremely ambiguous. It may be that the guy was just expressing his opinion. Without further evidence, it’s irresponsible to present it as fact.

  95. Razoreater says:

I’m with Steve Young. The 49ers are in the driverseat in the Manning sweepstakes.

    • ninermd says:

Nope! The 49ers already know he’s not coming. Called smith and said don’t sign your career away swimming with the fish. It’s to odd he didn’t take that deal after reportedly bring upset with the 49ers brass. No way he turns it down without knowing he’s staying in SF

  96. DS94everXev says:

This whole blog is full of posts which can best be summed up with Jim Mora’s great quote:

“You think you know. But you don’t. And you never will.”

    • ninermd says:

Oh we’ll know by tomorrow or Tuesday or wed…. Ha ha haaaa. The week before the decision must have really sucked for cavs fans. And btw. I know! Den manning sf smith. I have an inside source.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

You may guess the eventual outcome fine. As I would have as well.

But, the details….No. Nobody knows about them. And if this is a properly run business, nobody outside of those few esteemed people will ever know. And likely none of them will know the whole thing either. Only what the other esteem people told them. And of course, they may not tell one another everything.

      • ninermd says:

Well I know how the mob works and with the underground tactics the Niners have used. My theory is what happened. Ive seen all the gangster flicks. Lol

      • DS94everXev says:

        @md

I’m glad you said you know how the mob works.

Know what stops the mob from working? Rats. That is almost it. Them and tax IRS men. The kinds of people most people can’t stand are the only ones who can stop the truly awful people from continuing their thing. Interesting. Don’t you agree?

Besides, didn’t you see my Miller’s Crossing quote?

“You run this town because others think you run it. They stop thinking it, you stop running it.”

Rather appropriate in all kinds of things besides mafioso related subjects.

  97. Steve Booth says:

    Grant,

This is a PR move. Alex and Peyton have the same agent. This probably means Alex has inside scoop on where Peyton is going. In my eyes, this means Peyton most likely is NOT to go to the 49ers. My logic is this…Alex says hes willing to be a backup now before Peyton landing news hits, so his pride is still intact when Peyton chooses Tennessee or Denver, otherwise he looks like a pushover if he comes crawling back after the Niners throw him out because, again, they have no one better then him.

What are your thoughts on this? What do you guys think? Am I on to something or am I over anaylsing this?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Re-read the title of the blog article: AS is willing to be the 9ers back up plan *not backup*!

      • ninermd says:

Lol I was thinking the same. Back up an means he will have a job by Monday. It’s a done deal. Lol manning better dress warm.

    • ninermd says:

steve you can’t steal my thunder. His agent didn’t tell him squat. Harbaugh got in touch and told him manning isn’t coming. Leave Miami and sign with us. I’ve already posted that. But your close. Lol

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Steve

AS fired his agent a few days ago now I believe. So, he would not have any knowledge.

Unless he hacked into his agents email and gave him a nasty virus. But that is something I would do. Not AS.

      • MJ says:

Smith didnt fire his agent. Thought was he was upset with him and would move on, he’d have to wait 5 days before hiring a new one. Neither of which never happened.

Also, its being said Peyton is doing all the negotiating/decision making himself, Condon doesnt have any say or insight into whats going on.

      • MJ says:

        *ever happened

      • ninermd says:

Even more odd. Why would he have an agent then? Manning is that controling? Don’t be shocked to hear tomorrow the 49 ers are no longer in the sweepstakes and smith has signed a deal. It’s all coming to light

      • DS94everXev says:

        @mj

A few days ago, I thought there was a report that AS had fired, or would fire his agent.

This is all getting very hard to keep track of.

      • Max says:

DS, apropos of your “Unless [Alex] hacked into his agents [sic] email and gave him a nasty virus. But that is something I would do. Not AS” remark: do you happen to have a dragon tattoo on the back of your left shoulder? (P.S. “Cohn brothers”? LOL!) (P.P.S. Make Jack swear to keep your identity secret. If he agrees, accept the date – and I’ll chaperone and be a witness to his oath and swear to keep your identity secret, too. Whadya say?)

    • Jake says:

How is it that the Niners threw him out? Wasn’t he the one that did not sign his contract when he had the chance?

  98. Razoreater says:

They called alright. His bluff. Alex folded. If he comes back it will be backing up Manning.

    • ninermd says:

Idk razor. It’s odd he stopped on a dime did a 180 and refused his only offer. Now he wants to be a back up plan? No way. He’s coming back to be a starter! No MAN would take a backseat to another. Not anyone with any kind of pride at least. I wouldn’t want a player like that on my team. And I hope harbaugh wouldn’t either.

  99. BigP says:

Paraag is one of the best contract negotiators in the business. Harbaugh is one of the best coaches and talent evaluators in the business, along with Baalke. It is amusing how people think they know more about Manning’s capabilities than Harbaugh and Baalke and more about the salary cap than Paraag. These guys have proven they are several steps ahead of everybody and know what they are doing. There is a reason they want this guy as the QB of the team.

    • ninermd says:

That I agree with. It’s funny the 9ers know what they’re talking about when they want smith , but don’t know chit when they want someone else. It smith and a legend on top of that. It’s pathetic.

    • exgolfer says:

      Big P,

Are you saying that bringing Manning is without risk? That there is no other side to the arguement? Because there is.

If the 49ers sign Manning I’m all in, but to act as if there’s not a valid counter arguement to bringing Manning in is myopic.

He’s 35, he’s coming off a year of four neck surgeries and not playing a down, he has to learn a new offensive sysytem [something he's never done before], from his peak in 2004 his performance has been in steady decline [I'm not saying he's not very good, I'm just saying he's not what he once was], and his playoff performance has been mediocre, considering the numbers he’s put up in the regular season.

      • ninermd says:

Point is ex… When and before they brought smith back last year. The same things were being said last year about smith. And the smith doubters got called haters and they know more than Baalke and harbaugh. Well now wr have the same situation. So the shoe is on the other foot and now you want to bring up health and age. Well I’ll say to you what I heard. Harbaugh and Baalke have this job for a reason and you don’t. Trust I’m them or get lost. Plain and simple. You can’t talk or excuse yourself from this. The smith fans laid the rules down and now you have to follow them. Deal with it. If they’re interested they know what the hell they’re doing.

      • BigP says:

        exgolfer,
Is that what I said? I said it’s funny that people think they know more about the situation than the experts who want him. Those experts being the coach of the year and the executive of the year.

      • exgolfer says:

        MD,

The difference is the way they were said. They weren’t questioins raised about Smith, they were out and out bashing. There is a difference, you know. That’s where I’ve tangled with you guys, not over questioning Smith, but the approach [the arrogant, I know everything attitude] and the complete dismissal of the REASONS we didn’t really know what Smith was going into last year.

        Big P,

I’m inferring that you feel there is either no risk or insignificant risk. That’s all. If that’s wrong, just say so.

All I’m saying, is you are just brushing off any counter arguements to signing PM.

Can you explain Manning’s declining performance [before his four neck surgeries, that is]? Can you explain his relatively underwhelming playoff performance?

There are legitimate questions. Perhaps they all have answers and the 49ers sign him. Great. In the mean time, asking those questions shouldn’t result in the questioner being labled a fool.

  100. bayareafanatic says:

I never waiver, not wavering on this one. Manning will be a Niner. Done deal. DONE DEAL. And as a Niner fan I am excited as hell about it….

    • BigP says:

Either way, I can’t wait to get out to the Stick this year for some football and tailgating. Maybe we can get Hofer out of his chair with a bottle of good wine and a game ticket.

    • MJ says:

  101. Grant Cohn says:

Tim Kawakami just tweeted this: “Agent Tom Condon is still handling Alex Smith’s negotiations and other dealings with teams, according to a league source.”

    • BigP says:

      Grant,
What is your gut feeling on how things shake out?

      • Grant Cohn says:

The Niners will sign Manning and Smith will sign with the Dolphins – that’s my gut feeling.

      • MJ says:

Wasn’t this the gut that said the Niners were going to blow out Baltimore something like 30-3?

I’m not saying, but just saying.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Agreed. Just because he didn’t sign today doesn’t mean anything.

      • BigP says:

It sure seems like a lot of drama if they didn’t feel they could land him.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Exactly.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Grant the way I look at it, the Niners signed Moss and Manningham to show Payton that he had weapons everywhere. It was a move to aggressively lure Manning. Otherwise they would have continued their strategy of doing it through the draft. Prior to the Manning thing they were content to draft and teach.
Which team has better weapons? Adv Niners
Which team has the best defense? Adv Niners
Which team has the best Oline? Niners / Den
Which team has the best superbowl chance? Niners
Which team has the best weather? Niners

Do a pros and cons and it isn’t even close. If the money is close, Payton is our guy. I still think Alex should come back and be our backup…. He’s got no where else to go.

  102. Razoreater says:

Manning is a 49er. How could he choose Titans or Broncos if he wants to sport more jewelry.

    • MJ says:

AFC is the easier conference. Outside of Balt, Pitt and NE, no other team has shown consistency. NFC has probably 7 teams (other than SF) that can make a run at it and there for be a formidable road block to a SB (GB, NO, NYG, Dallas, Phili, Atl, Chi). I’d include Detroit but they are much like Cinci, havent shown consistency.

Peyton signs with the Broncos, he’s got the AFC west in hand and a home playoff game a mile in the air. That got Tebow his win, took one of the Pitt defenders out of the game completely. In the AFC south Houston is all there is and only reason they were in the playoffs is cause Peyton was out.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @razoreater
      The AFC is weak.
Both the AFC west (Broncos division) and AFC south (Titans division) are weak divisions. Not going to be hard to get into the playoffs in the weak division in the weaker conference.

  103. Adam707 says:

I almost hope Alex comes back as our QB just to piss off all of you cynical morons. Alex is a good QB, yes PM is better. Alex as of now is a good QB, top ten but not bottom ten. There still is a chance he will be here next year so stop putting your feet in your mouths.

    • BigP says:

Dude, shut up. By your own admission Peyton is better, but you hope Smith comes back just to piss somebody off. Talk about being a moron.

      • DS94everXev says:

Why the name calling? Adam707 didn’t mention you by name at all. You could have kept quiet.

But, you didn’t. Because you are a hater. The above post proves it.

      • BigP says:

Go back to your Mad Dog 20/20.

      • Adam707 says:

Nice personalized attack. It really hurt my feelings, HAHA like i care what you think

    • Razoreater says:

I’ll be disappointed and embarrassed that Baalke/Harbaugh lost Manning, but I will not be angry with them or with the idea that Alex will be back. I would be angry if they had not tried to get Manning. We can win with Alex. It just makes it harder and the margin for error is alot less.

    • MJ says:

Correction. Alex is a good QB, Peyton was better. To these people they can’t seem to believe that Alex could continue to trend upward and that Peyton could continue to trend downward.

A 27 year old qb just had his best season and thats it…he’s peaked? Why, how?

A 36 year old qb has had continually declined in production the last few years, yet somehow he will reverse course or atleast hold pat. Why, how?

If those were the case then why not just sign any and every great qb that ever lived…I mean according to this mindset they never get old, never lose what they had, never can be surpassed or outplayed by someone 9 years their junior. Hey…Joe Montana isnt signed, lets give him a call.

    • ninermd says:

Yeah really 707. What kind of fan hopes a team doesn’t get better just to piss some people off? Fan of the year pal.

  104. Martin says:

I hate the way this is going down.. im a big fan of Alex and I feel like we’re doing him really dirty..

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Martin

      Positive view of things:

The whole Niner organization has given AS as much shin kicking as he needs to carry this thru the off season into the new season.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        @DS

Much of the grief Alex has endured could have been avoided if he had stood up for himself early on. When he tore up his shoulder Nolan had him lifting weights within a week. I tore my rotator cuff over 20 years ago and lifting weights is the last thing you do. Bad coaching, bad advice, from people that never coached a team let alone a QB.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

        Maybe.

But if you are a new grad from college and are given “stupid money” like all pro sport athletes are, especially #1 overall picks, how often would somebody tell their boss to “shove it where the sun don’t shine?”

If you are getting minimum wage, then I say you are more inclined to do it than if you are getting paid millions of dollars right out of school for having done basically nothing (as all draftees have done).

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        @DS

I agree with you to a point. You have to remember these multimillionaires have entire teams behind them with, financial, medical, media and every other part of their life monitered. Maybe the wrong people (are) guiding him.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

Look who was in charge and who was in the building when all that happened (AS injury).

The people who knew and cared were outnumbered and out voiced at that point in Niner history. Such things would never happen now. People tend to think that how things are in the present is how things have been and will be. On both accounts, they are almost always wrong.

    • Razoreater says:

I’m a big fan of the 49ers and of Super Bowls and of glories and victories yet to come. Whether it is with Manning (Odds increase) or Smith(Odds even) it never is personal. It is business. Nothing dirty about improving the team.

  105. Bently says:

Manning will sign with the Titans, they are throwing the kitchen sink at him, its the better of the AFC options, he doesn’t want to play against his brother for anything other than a Super Bowl. He can shove it against the colts twice and be virtually guaranteed of sneaking into the playoffs… Smith is coming back to the niners… deal with it. This has been a week of asinine banter. SAME DEFENSE is back. ALL 11. lol. Smith WILL be better, they WILL make the playoffs.. and come playoffs no one will want to see that niner D. Manning is just an attractive waste of money that would throw off team chemistry. Ya he is one of the greatest QB’s ever… niners bounced Joe and he took the chiefs to the playoffs twice… Stuff happens, great players get old. Warner wins a title… i mean who cares. Give me that same team back from last year cause I liked watching them play. It was finally fun again. Hope Smith goes Pro Bowl, Super Bowl MVP… For himself, for the niner nation, for his believers… We certainly have seen the talent. It’s just about consistency now.

  106. Mood Indigo says:

To quote Oscar Wilde: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Similarly we are all wallowing in blissful ignorance of what is actually going on, but we are happily spinning scenarios many of which cases either Alex or HarBaalke in poor light.

In such times, I turn to Sando who can dig into his ESPN network for some insights.

My conclusion, based on very little information but on common sense, is as follows.

Smith is OK with the contract the Niners offered him in terms of time (3 years) and money ($24M, although I’m not sure how much of it is guaranteed which is the bottom line).

However, Smith has a one-year old kid and is settled in a nice place in the Los Gatos hills. He wants a bit of stability. He is confident that he can beat out Kaep in competition. My impression is that wants a clause in the contract against a sign-and-trade. He doesn’t want to lose control of where he winds up. That’s a pretty reasonable demand. Thee Niners F.O. also doesn’t want to commit in case they feel Kaep can start and, instead of having Alex as a backup, they may want to trade him in September.

I think Harbaugh has been honest with Alex and kept him informed about the Manning situation. Alex understands the situation and that if Manning wants to play at SF, the Niners would be expected to sign Manning in their own business interests. He doesn’t hold that against the Niners. That’s why his in his statement in Miami today, he mentioned that no one expected last year that Manning would be a FA.

What’s happening is just part of a negotiation process involve a superstar who is going to make a decision strictly by himself. Everybody else including the Niners and Alex will just have to play along. Smith is not behaving as selfishly as most of detractors are making is sound. He may have received a call this afternoon from the Niners telling him that his demand(s) would be met in some form if Manning doesn’t sign.

Alex’s not under any illusion that the Niners would play him if Manning becomes available. He’s not a greedy SOB. I think he has had uncertainty over the last two seasons and wants a bit more stability. If the Niners sign Manning he will get that 3-year deal in Miami. It’s all business.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @mood

Wouldn’t it be funny if Manning does not sign because he does not want any competition?

I mean AS came back last year with the understanding that the starting job would be up for grabs and that the will not get it automatically.

And people always complain about AS lack of “competitiveness” while praising the same quality of PM. Well, what if PM wanted the sure thing and AS was ok with competing against PM? And PM does not want to have to compete.

All speculation, but so is every other post here. And the whole blog as well.

      • Mood_Indigo says:

I think Manning has a tough decision ahead, but it has to do with his health. Whichever team he joins won’t be able to afford anyone else to compete with him at QB position.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @mood

PM if he does play is risking everything and will gain nothing.

People say he is “competitive”. BS I say. You can choose to be competitive in something else. Take up another hobby. One which is not so clearly a danger to your life and well-being.

PM has nothing but football. That is why he wants to come back to it. He does not want to wake up one day and not have to go to work as a QB. I see it all the time in non-pro sport people all the time. They say that they are retired. But, they keep finding work or jobs which they don’t financially need.

They want to work. They don’t need to work. And the same is true of PM here. Except PM is freaking crazy considering his situation.

    • htwaits says:

Your post is clear, accurate, and reasonable so it follows as night follows day that it’s out of place in this blog.

  107. Crab15 says:

Harbaugh knows he praised Alex Smith publicly and said he was an elite QB. He knows the consequences if this Manning wooing fails.
There’s no way that Harbaugh would pursue signing Peyton Manning, unless Peyton informed the 49ers his interest in them was significant.
That leads me to believe the 49ers were/are the frontrunners from the moment their doctor cleared him last Wednesday. Unless something unexpected has gone wrong or PM changes his mind, I think it’s likely he’ll end up a 49er.
    Just my opinion.

  108. Gac says:

Sorry Alex, if Manning is here, you are not here,.

  109. fesnyc says:

i’m ok with any of the outcomes- overjoyed, in fact

if Peyton comes, thats great: Baalke, Harbaugh, every professional commentator and – judging by other websites/polls- most fans think he is a clear upgrade over Alex. i agree.

if Alex starts, thats fine – ive always seen serious limitations in his game (and stats like 29th in the league in passing and third down conversion dont lie), but he’s improved somewhat under Harbaugh and might improve a bit more. with better receivers, maybe we get to 12th or 15th in the league in passing, good enough to get back and hopefully deep in the playoffs

if alex doesnt come back, im ok with that too – i think Hasselback at 36 can play as well as Alex – i think our thir down conversions would go way up (ie from abysmal to acceptable)

if by some chance we are forced to rely on Kaep or Josh Johnson or a lesser light, thats cool too – i think Kaep would throw 15-20 INTs without batting an eye but i think we would get a lot of plays that Alex couldnt make (not because he cant make the throws, but because he either cant scan the field well enough to find the oppty or for simply wont pull the trigger)

most important, im overjoyed because we finally know that Baalke and Harbaugh arent blind, and see what most fans see in Alex: a good man perhaps, but just a serviceable qb. if he was only so much as “good”, you wouldnt take the chance on an expensive 36 yr old surgically repaired qb who just got dumped by his team. for a team with a SB ready defense, theyre willing to replace a 7 yr veteran in his physical prime. that speaks volumes. even if Alex starts, he has to improve or his days are numbered.

    • Crab15 says:

You can’t get anymore politically correct than that post.
      Nothing wrong with being positive.

    • oneniner says:

… with 15-20 INTs we are not making the playoffs….

      • DS94everXev says:

        @oneniner
        Very true one.

I wonder how many “elite” or playoff QB’s threw 15-20 Int’s:

        Flacco had 12
        AR had 6
EM had 16 (maybe you do need to throw lots of Ints. Oh. Wait. When EM was in the playoffs, he threw none).
        Matt Ryan had 12 Int.
Drew Brees had 14 Int, but also for 46 TD’s, so.
Tim Tebow threw for 6 Int.
        Tom Brady had 12 Int.
        Andy Dalton had 13 Int.
All of the Texans QB’s threw for 9 Int’s.
        Alex Smith had 5 Int’s.

I know that is not all of the teams, but do you see a pattern emerging here?

If you throw for 15-20 Int’s you likely are not going to the playoffs. And why do we not want to go to the playoffs again?

Palmer for comparison of a non playoff QB had 16 Int in 10 games.

  110. brian says:

I really think its weird that so many people think Alex is a better fit or the 9ers are just better off keeping Alex. I’m pretty sure no one here wants to talk crap on Alex Smith but you people force there hands by saying the dumbiest thing possible, “we should keep Alex”. Alex isn’t mad for one simple reason. He knows Peyton manning is great and he can’t blame them for doing the obvious choice and ATTEMPT to sign PM. Of course Alex wants to stay in SF. I wonder if he is aware that if 49ers don’t sign PM his asking price will go down.

  111. brian says:

I mean if the 9ers do get PM

  112. oneniner says:

…why do i get the feeling TB legacy will be turning chicken salad into chicken zhit…….

  113. robwco says:

Manning will be here and Smith will be out

  114. brian says:

lemons67what r u talking about?. 49ers gave Alex smith opportunity after opportunity to prove himself. I’ve never seen a qb play as bad as he did and still get the starting job year after year. They’ve been nothing but great to him while he was under contract . Now the team is exploring other (better) options just like Alex smith is free to do. When players bale on teams people said well he did what was best for him. When teams trade or replace players its called pissing on them and having no loyalty.

    • msclemons67 says:

2008: the 49ers select J.T. O’Sullivan as the starter over Smith.

2009: The 49ers select Shaun Hill as the starter over Smith.

2010: the 49ers try to get Warner to replace Smith. During the season Smith is benched for David Carr and Troy Smith.

2011: the 49ers try to get Hassleback to replace Smith.

2012: the 49ers try to get Manning to replace Smith

For the last 5 years Smith has been the second choice for the 49ers. The guy they settled on when the QB they wanted wasn’t available.

He really needs to go to a place where he’s wanted.

      • jj schweddy says:

wanted..hes cashed niner cheks for like 50million…?? i’d say they want him…beginning of last season he was regarded as a bonified career backup…boo hoo for being in the business..he laughing all the way to the swiss bank account…

      • Sean in Canada says:

Just one clarification msclemons, Smith wasn’t benched for Carr. That was the game against the Panthers when Smith got blindsided and injured. Carr got leapfrogged the next week on the depth chart by Troy Smith, who I believe is now the backup on his home towns leapfrog team. He can’t unseat Nate Davis.

  115. justme2 says:

Do we really need a 36 year old QB who’s marginally better than the 27 year old we’ve got? Manning’s QB rating the last year he played (2010) was 91.1 — less than a point better than Smith. Other than a brief blip up in 2008, Manning’s rating has steadily dropped since 2004, while Smith has steadily risen in rating, and with stability in the coaching ranks can only get better. He didn’t fumble that ball in the rain that cost a trip to the Super Bowl. Let’s see what he can do with some decent receivers in the mix; if he falls short then we look to draft Barkley or another good young QB, or see who’s on the free agent market. I don’t want to see Manning struggling on the field in a Niner jersey like Joe Montana did with the Chiefs.

    • ninermd says:

Lol another fruit comparing stats. And it’s the old mighty qbr. Why didn’t you throw up the other stats. Like td’s? Yards? 3rd down efficiency? You ask why would we want an aging qb that’s “marginally” better than smith. First that word is a fn joke. Pm his far better than smith second the whole nfl and anyone with a brain would want manning over 2 smiths. You can’t be serious trying to compare the two. And third… They want to sign him because they know more than you and I about football. I have a question for you. Why are your questioning nfl coaches and gm’s? Especially the coach and GM of the year? Sounds silly doesn’t it?

    • jj schweddy says:

wow..smith and manning in the same sentence?? i love the niners and root for alex but he sucks..those old qb ratings arent even used anymore…Barkley isnt that good…and is a total a hole…and hello revisionist historian…Montanna took the chiefs to the playoffs and also beat sy and the niners….where were u???

  116. brian says:

Justme2 that was the dumbiest mesaage I’ve read in my life. Maregenly better!? Ur don’t know ANYTHING about football if you just compare qbs on there qb rating. PM threw for almost 3 times more TDS for god sake. PM had no real run game. Teams know hes going to throw the ball and he still beats them. Margenly better! 1st ballot hall of farmer? Or a qb who will never even go to the pro bowl. Margenly better!? Smh

  117. TIM_ says:

Great logical posts Ninermd and MS ! Maybe PM will still save us all, even the very few fans that are delusional enough to still think we dont need saving from Alex.
As I have said since we first heard Jh and TB wanted Pm over Alex, I still think Alex will be our starting QB in 2012 and PM will go to Tenn. It is just to good to be true to get PM and remove one of the weak links of the team and replace that weak link with a star.

  118. TIM_ says:

I want to be happy with Alex at QB. I like the kid and it would be so easy to adopt him as my fav player like some few still do. I understand their feelings. But Alex is just not very good and that forces me to use my brain and eyes over my heart. Some fans just let their hearts over rule their head and their common sense. I understand but am compeled by my common sense to push away the koolaide and instead drink the bitter truth, that Alex is simply not very good at his job on the field of play where it counts.

  119. brian says:

I’m sad. There is so many dumb 9er fans. Were no different than raider and charger fans! Alex Smith or PM isn’t even close and so many of u say Alex! Wtf seriously! U guys should be ashamed

  120. Tjam says:

Screw Peyton Manning. I never had much of a vested interst in Smith one way or another until this year when I thought he went above and beyond what might have been expected of him given the circumstances of how the league year started. After all of Harbaugh’s talk about management being in “lock step” in regard to Alex’s future with the team I think it would be difficult for the player’s ever to believe another word out of his mouth if they end up signing Manning. And while I can certainly appreciate Manning’s contributions to the game the fact is that he is a 36 year old QB coming off four neck operations in the last 18 months who only led his team to one championship in 14 years. I was really excited about going into next season with Smith Kapernick and Tolzein (I’m sure the spelling on those last two is wrong but you all know who I’m talking about) now I am going to have to have a back-up plan of my own for Sundays.

    • NickRow says:

You are the Epitome of an Alex Smith fan. If AS isn’t playing, then – in your own words- you’ll have backup plans for Sundays. You Smithers are not real Niner fans and only root for your idol. Some of you are also turning on JH and TB. That’s pathetic.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Nick

“I was really excited about going into next season with Smith Kapernick and Tolzein”

Sounds to me like you are just really really mad. Did you read the whole post? Because the above quote should tell you that Tjam is cheering for the team.

        Geezz.

  121. Juan Garcia says:

I would prefer Smith because unlike Manning he can scramble and they will need Manning to do that to buy time when teams bring the heat, he won’t be able to and might get hurt because of it, Smith saved the 49ers several times with his legs especially that 28 yard TD run against the Saints and Smith is already got the chemistry down with the offense.

    • robwco says:

Juan you definitely dont know a clue about the art of QB cuz Manning is a master of the pocket who buys more tiem with managing the pocket than a Smith who leaves the pocket when the slightest pressure come’s and moves like a chicken withouth a head , IMO great QB’s first work the pocket before they abandon and run.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I would say he’s a better runner than Manning. Manning has great pocket awareness and does not take many sacks. With Manning at QB the defense wouldn’t dare load the box. The great quarterbacks have defenses playing on their heels.

  122. robwco says:

Any news on Manning if he wants to see our facility?

  123. brian says:

I can’t wait till Peyton comes back and reminds the world how great he is. Clearly everyone forgot. There Not even comparable. Peyton has 3 great seasons left. I wouldn’t be surprised if Alex is not in the league in 3 years. You people are something else

      • DS94everXev says:

        No nick

The idea of the Broncos trading Tebow has been flown about a long time Nick. If the Broncos got PM, it makes a lot of sense.

Get with the program. And not the hating one.

      • NickRow says:

        @DS
I’m not sold on Tebow, he seems like a one trick poney. But he is a winner. Nonetheless, he’s not a good fit for the Niners.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

I would be in the “non-believer” camp when it comes to Tim Tebow. Especially if I paid attention to the stuff he says off the field.

  129. brian says:

Lol. My message was serious. I can see the future.

  130. robwco says:

you forget the blue text oneniner trading for Tebow would be Smith B , Manning will be here

  131. Chicago49er says:

This is a great news. I am positive Jim H called Alex and told him to just wait since he does not have anything to lose since Matt Flynn has signed with the seahawks anyway.

Alex is our next option if PM is not willing to come to SF. This is a smart choice for Alex to stay in the same system and not move across the country to a whole other offense without a long term commitment. If Alex takes the QB job and plays better than last year then he can increase his stock as well. GO NINERS

    • NickRow says:

Even if Alex is brought back, there will be competition at QB. From past track record, I’m not sure if Alex can win the starting job.

  132. robwco says:

Im sorry to hurt your feelings Chicago but after Peyton it’s Kaepernick and not AS as our option. Kaepernick is a natural leader just like all good QB’s in the NFL are not like Alex the meek or Alex the beggar who would be even crazy to be a backupplan LOL.

TB: we’ll see, can’t hurt to look, but lets keep it behind closed doors…
JH: definately!! I wouldn’t want to upset Alex.
TB: Ok, so Peyton has been released.
JH: alright: let’s get a move on a see what he’s got. But shhhh don’t tell anyone.
    TB: Ringggggg, hello
    PM: what up?
TB: we wanna come see you throw.
PM: oh goodie goodie goodie!! ok, when you coming?
TB: JH,GR and I will be on JEDs plane as soon as ESPN calm down a little and the blimps stop following you around. Why don’t you go be wined and dined with other teams, kiss some babies and we’ll be in contact when things slow down a little.
PM: OK, I’ll be waiting with my agent.
    In the mean time,
AS: man, they wanna pay me how much?
    Condon: 3-for 24 million
AS: what? I thought I was elite, doesn’t sound like that to me..
Condon: just wait it out, who else are they going to get?
AS: Ok, I guess since JH is my buddy…
    time passes again
    ringgg: Hello
AS: yes um The niners held a private workout for PM, did you hear about that?
Condon: um um ummmm, yeah but it’s not a big deal.
AS: WTF? who are you working for??
    Condon: you…..?
AS: you’re fired!!! Where’s Miami’s #, I ain’t going out like that. I Have to save face!! who wants me again? ummmm, ummmmm, ummmm ;( Let me go visit Reggie.

…i don’t get why most keep saying 49er is the best chance for him to go to the superbowl…….Broncos made it to the playoffs with a QB most will agree was worse than Alex…….and their division is weaker…..

    …something just doesn’t feel right!!!!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oneniner

Look at the teams in the AFC West and AFC South.

They all stink. Even the winning teams are not that great. The NFC West. Stank to high heaven the start of the year. By the end, the Cards and AZ almost had a 0.500 record.

Our division is a lot tougher than the other teams divisions. And the NFC is tougher now as well. And, wouldn’t it suck if EM beat his big brother in the playoffs to end PM’s career (from PM’s view)?

    • oneniner says:

…also interesting to see different ownership styles…..Adams (Ten) is out in front begging for Manning, i believe he even offered him a life contract……..while the Jed is not even involved……

      ….really wierd, whatz going on…….

….could it be the last season success has “shut up” Jed……maybe after losing so much he has so much faith in JH and TB he refuses to get involved…….

……..Sure I am in the camp of those that trust JH and TB……but to an extent……things change in the NFL every year, one thing you don’t want to do is be the reason things change…….when that happens bad things usually follow…..

the one mistake we all agree about the Niner Org the last years is the lack of continuity on the offense/team……and for some crazy reason we are back at the same issue after making the playoffs for the first time in years…….

      • DS94everXev says:

        @oneniner

“things change in the NFL every year, one thing you don’t want to do is be the reason things change”

You especially don’t want to have dramatic change when you were so close to the Super Bowl. Chances are, any changes will result in you not even reaching the peak you just did. But, of course, some changes will happen. It is inevitable. The organizaiton though should not be the lead in such a massive change. Changing starting QB’s is the biggest difference a football team can have.

I say slightly more than HC because a new HC can come in and still run the same type of offense with the same players (See George Seifert when he took over). But a new QB will almost assuredly have different skills than the previous QB had. Leading to a whole different offense is not out of the question.

      • oneniner says:

…yea i agree with you……i just pray we don’t lose out on both…….the biggest loser in all of this is TB…..cuz without Alex he has no excuse but the superbowl even if we go with CK and with Alex on the team (win or lose) …..he looks dumb…..

…….things didn’t have to be like this……especially when you are dealing with Manning, someone you can’t get mad at if he does not choose you…..

  139. TarHeelNiner says:

I realize it was Sunday but there are several things I don’t understand about all the panic/hysteria over the weekend:
    1. There appears to be only one source for all the information about what Alex Smith is thinking/feeling etc. and its some guy from the Denver Post, who cites a “source.” Now what kind of source knows Alex and the Dolphins are negotiating, knows Alex is pissed, and knows that the Dolphins offered $8MM, BUT plan to talk to David Garrard today or tomorrow.
    2. This same paper claims that the Manning stakes are now at 5 yrs/$90MM.
I think the Denver Post is trying to influence thinking in Santa Clara.
    3. Why would any team give Manning $20MM per year (1/6 of the cap), when they must see what that did to the talent level on the Colts? I know he is a 4 time MVP yada yada but I trust Baalke and Harbaugh and hope they get Manning at the number he is worth without sacrificing the long-term stability of what they have built so far.

    • DS94everXev says:

“Why would any team give Manning $20MM per year (1/6 of the cap), ”

Because if somebody offered you that money, I bet more than not, you’d take it.

And you’d go to the highest bidder for your services as well.

I personally would not pay PM more than vet min. He is just as big a question mark (though for different reasons) as RM is. The whole short-term future of your franchise is resting on this one guy. Nope. I won’t do it.

      • oneniner says:

…yea…I won’t pay him more than Alex……if he really wants a championship with us……then he shuld get paid less or have a similar contract like Moss which was mostly based on incentives…..

…….“I wouldn’t say he’s all the way back, but definitely he’s on the way back,” a source with “working knowledge of the process” (no, I don’t know what that means, either) told La Canfora. “You could really see [how close he is] on some throws. He’s getting there.”
        ………

        Dude is not even healthy!!!!….WTF

      • DS94everXev says:

        @oneniner

Considering this is not flag or even touch football…how does PM throwing the ball tell us how he will be able to withstand the punishment of getting his noggin kicked in game after game?

Look at our own division. The Cards and Seahawks both have defenses not too unlike our own in that they are not afraid of anybody and will hit you hard. Both are disciplined, so they won’t fall for that PM at the line BS he does all the time. We didn’t the last time we played him, and I bet he still feels a few of those hits in the morning.

If we are using “throws” to determine health about neurons and back/neck injuries in a sport where you will get blasted (especially behind our OL and in our division)…I don’t think that is really a good gauge of judging health. Only way to do that is to get hit. Hard. A lot. And that sounds stupid. Because it is. PM should not be trying to come back.

  140. Crab15 says:

The Manning circle of trust is on mute. No leaks.

That’s not nice!!! (But if it works, nobody has to know how the information was leaked, lol!)

  141. robwco says:

oneniner and DS you both are against our team i guess if i read your comments of why you think Denver or Tennessee would be better.
In those 2 divisions those teams are almost equal and it changes every year, In our NFC West except of us only the Rams have significally improved themself this FA and still we are a lot better especially since our weak link is a FA now our current starter can do the same or even better so plz root for your AFC teams you fishers.

    • oneniner says:

“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.”

    • DS94everXev says:

The Colts next year and the Jags are better than the Cards and Seattle at the end of the year? And Houston won…for the first time ever after being picked as the team to win for the past 3-4 years to come out as the division winner. Very impressive that it happens when the Colts suck.

The Suck-till-you-drop Raiders, Blow it in big game Chargers and the “what happened to us” Chiefs are as good as the Cards and Seahawks?

      Yeah. Sure.

  142. NickRow says:

Peyton is doing his due delegence. He’s leaning on trusted NFL people and seeking their opinion. Adam Schefter of NFL Network stated that Manning was inquiring about the 49ers organization over the weekend. Is that a good sign? I think so.

  143. Stan says:

542 posts already? whew-the drama is making the PD a fortune. KNBR was both knocking and defending Smith…I guess they are worried he WILL be back..

  144. oneniner says:

…honestly the one benefit i see of Manning joining us is calling out our receivers for lack of discipline…….in one way making them better……but it could also backfire…..i believe we have the highest number of ego centric receivers in the NFL……(davis, moss, crabtree, mannigham also has his issues and even Gore)

…I really don’t see him helping CK develop…..Manning has never helped his backup all the yrs he has been in the league I see no reason for him to do that now, especially when he his also learning a new offense…….

…..or do u know any of his backups that became good?

……damn why do I feel the little success we had last year has got everyone in ninerland too drunk to drive…….

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oneniner

I do think that PM would yell at the WR’s, which is something that I know I would feel like doing.

But, historically, how often has that happened where you can yell at somebody and they get better? Not many. Most people will hate you for it and tune you out.

MC I think will tune you out if you approached him like that. Not a fault, or a strength. Just is.

      • oneniner says:

…DS….Manning is a no nonsense guy……He has Type A personality, which means its my way or the highway…….just look at the situation now……….He his making elway, JH/TB, adams look like fools…..

if either of them loses out on Manning they will look dumb to a majority of people….

..In this crazy FA situation Manning wins no matter what…….

If any of our receivers are not in line i bet Payton has no problem calling them out…….didn’t he call out his kicker (who by the way was top notch)…..also believed he called out some of his teammates while at colts when things were tough…..

      • DS94everXev says:

        @one

If PM does what you say….there will be no more WR’s. Good thing JH employs multi-TE formations a lot. lol

  145. Bayareafanatic says:

When you see guys on the defense tweeting about being excited to bring in Manning it speaks volumes. It says the defense is great but they want some help. It tells you they want a good QB to lead an offense that compliments the defense.
Matt Maiocco yesterday said Alex didn’t sign the contract because the length of time left him insecure. MM said that the 2 year Guarantee told Smith Kaepernick was the guy. Bet Smith wishes he would have signed that contract now.

  146. LOL... says:

Basically, the 49ers backhand Alex Smith and he still comes crawling back to them looking desperate… Should have signed the more-than-fair contract when you had the chance, Alex… Isn’t anyone else fault that you overvalue yourself… Best that both parties move on… Alex is, at best, a stopgap solution… If Peyton doesn’t sign, we’re better off starting the future now… After all, they traded up to grab Colin for a reason…

  147. ironsides says:

I will kick 3000 field goals and use jason websters head for the ball.

  148. robwco says:

oneniner and ds get yourselfs a clue boys in those AFC divisions its every year a lottery with up and down teams instead of our NGFC west where we are the clear favorites especially after our 13-3 season and getting rid of our weakest links Smith,Snyder and Rachal

    • MJ says:

The weak link was the gaping hole in the chain that is called the receiving corp.

    • DS94everXev says:

You don’t know much about football do you?

PM plays QB. He will be facing the defenses of the Cards and Seahawks. Which are the strong side of those teams. The Cards would have won a lot more if Kolb didn’t suck (and the D got better as the season wore on since it was a new system for them as well). And, they likely will suck again since he is apparently the starter again over the guy who actually won games.

None the less, the Cards defense is legit. And with PP improvement over the season, and he gets better than that…AZ can shut down a very good WR. And we don’t have one (WR) right now who I know is better than PP.

So, the Cards can do what the Giants did. Load the box, double VD and rush the passer. No QB is going to do well under that pressure and nobody getting open. MJ is right. The Niners WR core was weak. With PP getting better (a safe assumption) the Cards will not be an easy win. Heck. We lost 1 game.

The Seahawks are always going to be hard at least 1/2 the time. That home advantage is more true there than anyplace else. Nobody goes to Seattle and dominates them there. Ask the AFC title game losers about that. And, the Seahawks took us all the way to the end of the line in Seattle was well.

And, before last year, how many people thought the Niners would go 13-3? Your first sentence falls apart for every division, so what are you saying?

    • Adam says:

Neither Smith nor Snyder were the weak link. We had no answer for injuries at the wideout spot. The lack of depth there hurt us but at the same time, we made do.

There’s nothing wrong with Alex Smith as long as he has a good coach and decent system to run – which he finally does (and which he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.) By all accounts (as reported by the Pros, not the Schmoes) Smith had a very good season, even the ill-informed haters on here had to admit it and gag on crow all year long. Smith isn’t the problem.

The addition of weapons at the wideout spot is an obvious move, in my opinion (which many of us identified AS the problem and have asked for.) There are rumors that the Niners are still interested in Wallace too – even now. This could happen if they save some cap space – which means no Manning. Ginn seems to be getting no traction in FA so he’ll probably be back on the cheap – and back to special teams. Pre-season competition at the wideout spots is going to be VERY interesting.

Fixing the guard position will also help tremendously. Helping A. Davis would seem to be a smart move as well. The O-line finally started to gel a bit which was a good sign. The protection schemes in the WCO are tough to learn and take a while. This upcoming season should be much improved. While Snyder was a good guy, hard-worker, decent player, he can be replaced. I don’t expect Rachal to be back and I wonder about Goodie. The good news is, the draft is thick (no pun intended) with guards and tackles this year, and at every level.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

No matter the QB…Wallace would help them all out. A new QB is not anywhere near as sure a thing. A guy who demands 2 teams, with the addition of RM and still have VD….we are awesome!

Still matters with the OL guard.

  149. Kelly Jack says:

This just proves AS is a stand up guy. The kind of MAN/team player the 49ers are known for signing (with the exception of Dion and a couple others) The NINERS have always been a team with INTEGRITY, an example for the rest of the league to follow. Not saying Peyton Manning isn’t a great guy, because he is, however, we need to secure Alex’s place in the 49er empire. He has EARNED his place…

    • bayareafanatic says:

That is the mistake everyone is making. First and foremost, this is a business take your heart out of it. Second, being a stand up guy and dealing with integrity are great attributes, but they are not the ones that solidify you as the QB of a team wanting to go to the superbowl. Production Production Production.
The things you list are great and would get you hired as the deacon of a church, but we are talking about the NFL.

  150. AES says:

The 49ers brass knows that they should have won the championship game and beaten the Pats in the SB.
Their weaknesses came to fruition in the championship game.
    1. more speed at the WR spot.
    2. more proficiency at the QB spot.

They are taking the proper steps to upgrade both those areas. That’s what organizations who want to win do.
There’s no room for loyalty in sports. Ask J.Montana, R.Lott, J.Rice, R.Craig among a few.
It’s a cold blooded business, period.

    • Gene18 says:

“In two seasons with the Chiefs, Joe Montana was nothing like the Super Joe of his four championship 49ers teams.”
That is just BS. I watched Montana take a Non Playoff team to the AFC Championship game. I also watched him beat a very good 49er team.
Dickey is just blowin’ smoke or smoking something.
Peyton is a master of this game and would have no problem.

      • Gene18 says:

“Now, they’d see this as throwing Smith under the bus. They’d never trust Harbaugh again.
Much damage has already been done. Harbaugh needs to bow out of the Manning sweepstakes and have a make-up talk with Alex Smith, encouraging him to re-sign with the team.”

Obviously the media and Fanatics don’t realize that teams are ALWAYS trying to get better. Who here thinks that Peyton is better than Alex? I do yet I have been one of the strongest Alex supporters. Alex would have won it all for us if we had receivers.

BUT how often does a team get a chance at a franchise QB without giving up anything but $$? Pretty much NEVER, until now.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Gene18

When money is a limited resource (as it is in the salary cap era) it is a huge issue. So, don’t pretend that it isn’t. Morgan did not leave to go to a better team. He left because he was going to get paid like a Wall Street crook.

If money were not an issue, why wouldn’t any team pay anything to keep their best players?

In the 80′s, nobody left here for someplace else. We paid more than other teams. We took other teams players. Other teams did not take our players. That is why the salary cap was made.

If the Giants had done what the Niners did, there would be no salary cap. Just like how there isn’t one in baseball because the Yankees have infinite funds and are located in NY. If they were not east coast (NY especially), baseball would have had a salary cap limit/minimum a long time ago.

    • 49erGirl says:

This is a business? Thought it was the Boy Scouts and they were just going to sit around this off season and sing songs around the campfire.

Excuse the scarcasm. I’m frustrated with all the “but we are hurting Alex and that’s not fair whaa whaa whaa” whining too.

    • oneniner says:

…pretty much sums up my fears….

“History tells us that quarterbacks who have built a Hall of Fame résumé with one team, as Manning certainly has, usually can’t replicate their success with new teams.

The one exception in 60 years is Norm Van Brocklin, who went from the Rams to the Eagles and led Philadelphia to an NFL championship”.

“In two seasons with the Chiefs, Joe Montana was nothing like the Super Joe of his four championship 49ers teams. Most recently, Brett Favre twice got the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl, winning once, but he couldn’t do that for the Jets or Vikings.”

“Manning has apparently been impressive in workouts for NFL teams, but he wasn’t getting hit. He’s had three neck surgeries in two years, and the last one kept him out for the 2011 season. The only question is how soon he’ll get knocked out this season.”

“Football is the ultimate team sport. If players don’t believe in their coach and quarterback, you see the kind of mess that existed in the Mike Nolan-Mike Singletary years. Even a strong coach like Bill Walsh lost his team in 1988, when he was beset by personal problems. Veteran players took charge at midseason and the 49ers went on to win the Super Bowl, but that was a team accustomed to success. The psyche of this team is much more fragile.”

      • oneniner says:

..I didn’t even know he had three neck surgeries in two years………

      • Adam says:

        It’s because… it’s a team sport.

Which brings me back to: Harbaugh’s integrity being on the line with this.

Here’s a guy who comes in and builds a blue-collar team of 53 equal parts. Blue work shirts, there aren’t really any stars or egos, etc., it’s all hands on deck, everyone pulling the same direction.

There’s damage done either way with this thing now because of the way it was handled, as Barrows and Poole have pointed out. It’s going to be real interesting to see how this gets worked out.

As far as this fan’s opinion goes? Harbaugh has lost a ton of cred with me. I won’t buy in to much of anything he’s selling anymore. Not that it matters much, I suppose.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Agree oneniner.

I thought he had 4 surgeries. Oh well. Doesn’t change my conclusion so who cares.

This is how I see it happening. And of course, I am right. lol

        1. PM is dumped by the Colts
        2. TB who said AS wasn’t coming back last year, is not “into” AS. JH was. But, I am the GM and have control of personnel, and I want to look at PM
        3. TB tells JH about PM’s workout, and JH says “sure, why not.”
        4. They both attend and like his passes.
        5. TB puts up an offer for PM.
        6. AS gets word of it like we did (really sucky).
        7. AS visits other teams.
        8. JH who does not have control of the personnel (as stipulated in his contract) starts freaking out a little and tells TB to contact AS.
        9. AS who wanted to come back says he still does.
        10. PM has now signed for the Broncos. So, it means nothing.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

        The positive outlook from me:

Until PM’s press conference, we have no idea what is happening. I do find it interesting that of the so called top 3 contenders for PM, only 2 have offered him a contract and neither is the 49ers. I’m not sure how PM can choose a team that hasn’t actually offered him a contract…how know’s what’s really happening.

I do know this…if PM does come to the 49ers, Crabtree BETTER have 80+ receptions and 1,000+ yards. Anything less than that and it’s safe to say his underachievement was not due to AS and he’ll NEVER be a #1 receiver.

I’m going to do some work and then check back in 15mins.

Oh, and Peyton Manning proved it’s about MONEY, not championships.

    • Adam says:

No such thing. Denver got to the post season on the back of Tebow. The AFC West is wide open.

    • 23jordan says:

Manning is a grown man. He made that decision for whatever reason. One thing we all know as Niner fans. He didn’t sign with the best team. He wont win a super bowl in Denver. My question is, do the Niners change their offer to Smith?? Why?? If it was fair before, why is it not fair now? I don’t see anything changing. Does Alex take the deal on the table? This is still business. If you change his deal and guarantee him more years and money, why are you doing it? Because the front office gets desperate or feel sorry for him? The deal should still be take it or leave it.

Stay ready Josh. Alex may still be smelling himself.

      • NickRow says:

I have an useasy feeling that Alex will sign the original offer and come back to the team. He doesn’t have any leverage. He knows that SF is the best team for him. His family wants to stay in California (i.e. his wife is calling the shots there) and the Niners appear willing to give him a chance to come in and compete for a starting job.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, when has Jordo ever been right here. Look at it like a business move. A SB trophy doesn’t take care of your family the rest of your life. PM lost out on $28M this year by not being on the roster with Indy – all business!

  166. ninermd says:

Would like to give myself and gut feeling a pat on the back. Denver it is and Jason vorhees is returning for part 8.

    • DS94everXev says:

A few of those were good md. Or at least not the worst.

    • tutomate says:

Good call you were right. Unfortunately.

    • ninermd says:

I know. It would have been nice, but when your gut tells you something don’t ignore that mutha. At least I’m not disappointed. Makes it easier. Back to mike Wallace now. Lol

  167. 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Welcome back Alex. I know he is going to be successful with the 49ers.
If anyone thinks Alex isnt coming back, nfl network just said 49ers have a back up plan. Alex!

  168. jgwindsor says:

    again i opine…..this is trent baalke’s show not JH’s……

it is a business and JH works for baalke…..

    i see nothing wrong here….

i do think the niners have taken the AS contract off the table until the manning carnival is over…..otherwise AS could just sign it over the agent’s guidance…..even though it is possible AS is not comfortable with a couple of items in the contract…..he in essence has money for his family as well maybe not last contract big money but he did get paid upfront a bit even though he did redo his contract…..and again i opine…i do think for AS it is not about the money it is about the super bowl and some security as far as residency and he requesting a different kind of respect vs show me the money respect….nothing wrong with that as well

    • Adam says:

You and I almost always agree, but not on this one.

I think they were playing games – or at least someone was playing games, whether it was Baalke or Condon or Harbaugh, I don’t know. But I think Smith, as quoted yesterday, had a right to feel betrayed, the public statements of support didn’t match what they were doing behind the scenes. I mean I realize it’s business and businessmen are slimeballs but still… there’s a PR angle here too, and they weren’t really shown in the best light with this situation.

      • DS94everXev says:

Why can’t you both be right Adam and jg?

      • OpenMinded says:

I concur that something smells. It is too bad JH will never open up to the media and fans about what really happened. Neither will Alex Smith, who is a different breed altogether and won’t divulge. As for Baalke.. he has assassin blood in him and had great results last year. Professional assassins usually don’t brag about their contracts. We may never know what really transpired here.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @openminded

“You think you know. But you don’t. And you never will.”
        - Jim Mora

BigP is just loving how appropriate this quote is right now. I know.

  169. exgolfer says:

    Manning signs with Devner.

  170. bayareafanatic says:

Unfortunately he is coming back mentally fragile now and now trusting 49er brass. All this after Harbaugh spent an entire year trying to mentally toughen him up.
The positive is, Alex now knows that what he did before wasn’t good enough. And if he wants a home, he has to step it up. As if he didn’t know that already. But now it’s crystal clear.

    • tutomate says:

I don’t know some reports are that AS’s offer was always on the table and never withdrawn.

If true it ads a new twist to this whole thing where JH could say AS was always our guy.

      • Adam says:

My understanding is that there was an offer but no terms sheet to ever sign.

Actually I would think he might have some leverage now if he wanted to be a Tool about it.

      • tutomate says:

That might be true but that is not what Tim Kawakami is leading on.

    • oneniner says:

….Bay ….alex is getting paid millions of dollars……I am very sure you are the one who is mentally fragile…….ha ha ha …lmao

      • ninermd says:

Lol onelame is back. From his gloom. Your boy was second option again. The vision you see in him isn’t what the 49 ers see. So what are you gloating about? Classic little troll. Ha ha haaa. Anyone that thought manning was going to sign here was crazy. We know now smith isn’t the long term plan. Harbaugh has got to coach him up again. Sweet another doubtful year with Alex smith. How can he trust anyone in this franchise now? It’s great to see you Squirm and whine about the threat. How do you feel now onelame. Your coach doesn’t think your hero can do it? Buahahaahaa

      • bayareafanatic says:

Jordan cracked me up. Called him Onedolphin hahaha. Oneniner start your own blog. When you thought Smith was gone you basically pulled a disappearing act. Classless jerk and you are not even a 49er fan kid….

  171. waterman says:

Denver has the most to spend. To bad they got rid of Lloyd. Show me the money. Denver can add more pieces if we signed PM how would we get a guard?

  172. tutomate says:

Peyton has every right to choose whichever team he wants all for legitimate reasons. But it does say something about his priorities that he signed/is signing with the Broncos.

    • BigP says:

Exactly. He was going to make a boat load of money no matter where he signed, but he wasn’t going to have a legitimate chance at winning another ring.

    • Adam says:

Not necessarily. There were reports from the beginning of this that staying in the AFC was a priority for him, he knew his opponents, etc. Plus, it’s the AFC West. The only real competition there is San Diego, if they don’t beat themselves. Denver can make a nice run at it. Raiders won’t do much, Palmer wasn’t the answer there. KC fans (on one blog I saw) were asking Alex Smith to come out there and play so not much happening there either.

Not a bad move for Manning. And actually, all three places had their advantages. I’m just glad the circus drama of that is over – totally lame.

I feel bad for Tebow. I hope he can continue playing somewhere (maybe he stays on with Denver) and continue to grow as a QB. Not a fan of all the excessive God stuff but he seems like a nice guy.

  173. BigP says:

Money grab over a legit chance at a Super Bowl? To each their own. Denver has no shot to win it all. This wasn’t meant to be. I don’t think they will even win their division.

    • tutomate says:

I don’t know about that. Their division is really weak much weaker then our Division IMHO. The only other contender is San Diego and I just don’t see it happening.

      • BigP says:

Just because the division is week doesn’t make them a legit SB contender. The Patriots destroyed them in the divisional round of the playoffs.

      • tutomate says:

Oh no, I did not say they were SB contender i had issue with what you said about them not winning the division

    • oneniner says:

      ….wipe those tears……weep weep…..why are you hating BigPuss….

      • DS94everXev says:

Funny, how 24 hours changed the big P’s view on things.

If PM is here, we win a Super Bowl. If PM is in Denver they don’t win their division (and assume no playoffs).

So, BigP does not hate AS? But he hates PM? Even after all the BS talk from him? Yeah. Truth comes out in arguments and in emotion.

      • BigP says:

Hating on what? The Niners determined Manning to give them a better chance to win a SB because he is a superior QB. That is why they went after him. I thought his priority would be to win a championship at this stage of his career, signing with Denver would signal it isn’t. You guys are the ones who are hating. You would rather keep your love affair with Alex going then upgrade the team. Talk about having an agenda.

  174. Jack Hammer says:

Somebody better check to make sure those Moss and Manningham contracts were officially signed….

  175. DRTY 49 says:

5 years 95 million was to steep, wouldn’t make sense

  176. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Looks like 49ers could be in play for Mike Wallace. Broncos had a ton of cap space and Elway may be one of the handful of people on earth that can communicate with Manning on that once in a generation quarterback level. I’m happy to see Alex back (I hope) and I can’t help but think this is a decision Manning will come to regret.

    • DS94everXev says:

I really wanted this one more than any other signing. It helps the weakest link on the team no doubt, and gives the QB (You know I like AS, but it would help any QB) a real serious weapon on the outside.

Our whole offense will be able to expand in ways no QB coming in could make it happen.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Wallace will probably end up in Denver for those same reasons, tons of cap space and the opportunity to play with Manning and for Tebow…

      • DS94everXev says:

        @jack

Wallace said 49ers. Not PM’s team.

Does not mean you are wrong. But, not the same thing.

Also, do you want to face the Pit D (ie Troy) in the playoffs if you left the Steelers? I would not. Best option is an NFC team.

  177. 23jordan says:

The bigger questiOn is will the Niners change their offer to Smith now that they don’t get Manning? If the Niners determined Smiths market value and made him an offer 2 months ago, that offer should nor change. He either takes it or leaves it.

Josh and Kap are capable of doing what Smith can do. I’ve always believed that about Johnson. Does Smith think he has leverage now? Let’s see how the Niners handle this.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Agreed. What did come out of this was Smith truly has no value. Unless you want to believe Hofers unsubstantiated rumors.
The 49ers made a huge tactical error. They should not have jumped all in with their pursuit of Manning unless they knew they would win. Now we are left with a QB that was already mentally fragile and he feels unwanted. He’ll never trust the 49ers again. And he also knows he has no value.
Let the damage control begin…… Gotta bring in JJ now and let the three of them compete…
The other part of this that stinks is, what type of mindset do Moss and Manningham have? They were probably lured here under the impression that Payton was their QB…

      • tutomate says:

LOL @ “Hoffers unsubstantiated rumor” while true, there is also a thing called unsubstantiated speculation.

      • bayareafanatic says:

All I can tell you is this. Seattle showed a bit of interest but chose to sign a career backup without looking at Smith.
Miami was the only one interested. And Miami is the worst team in the league right now. No one wants to play there.
There seem to be a ton of teams that need a QB upgrade and no one wanted Smith. Worst part now, Smith knows it too…. Try to put lipstick on that any way you want….

      • Neal says:

I never was convinced that Peyton was going to sign with the Niners, but this is actually good news. Alex knows he will be here only a short time and I can actually see Kaep play towards the end of the season, if Alex can’t throw the ball to our much improved receiver’s.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, there was a lot of turbulence yesterday. After AS went to Mia and it was stated he was going to Sea this week, the news got out it was between Denv and Tenn (probably a good genture by PM) and that is when the deal got done yesterday with MF. Seattle got THIS YEARS KKolb. Good luck to them…ha!

      • Adam says:

Nah, none of that is true. If you watched Lombardi and all those guys last night and this morning, the problem for Smith is that because he waited 5 days (for whatever the reason – and we probably won’t know the truth of it) there weren’t really any seats at the table left for him (their words.) And most likely he will or would have the same deal in Miami that the Niners were supposedly offering.

Cleveland may be another possibility. Some of the Pros (not the schmoes) believe Cleveland is the unknown here – most likely they’ll draft but still… who knows.

Actually Tebow now finds himself in a similar situation with being the odd man out. This is how this was going to go, musical chairs, someone loses.

Joe Philbin’s team may not be great this year but that guy’s supposed to be a real sharp coach and he’ll bring the WCO in – although I guess they can call it the South Coast Offense :P – and eventually that team may be pretty good.

    • ninermd says:

NO WAY!!!! Alex smith signed that contract last night. His ego took a shot and he can’t succeed anywhere else. I guarantee he faxed that signature last night. I am willing to bet the 49ers knew yesterday they weren’t getting manning and told him not to sign with Miami. Man this escapade really tore down what harbaugh instilled in smith last year. So who plays now. Smith that feels not wanted and undervalued. Or smith that thinks he’s elite and the smith that didn’t sign the contract in the first place. How can he really buy what harbaugh feeds him now. Through all of this I think he realized he’s not as good as harbaugh told him he is. Gotta hope “again” that he can improve on last year. One thing is certain. They gave him weapons this year, he’s familiar with the system, the o-line has improved, there is absolutely NO excuse next season for him not to be a top 7 qb. Anything less should not be tolerated. He’s finally got what the smith fans want. The whole world is peachy and perfect for him. But you know the smith fans will make up more excuses if he fails.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, they called AS because he was negotiating with Mia and ready to sign. I believe PM gave them insight last night it was between Denv and Tenn. The 9ers called him and yes of course he would rather sign with the 9ers than Mia – no QBs want to play in Mia.

  178. NinersRoc says:

We need Alex! He and CK need to compete for the starting job this year! If Alex does sign else where, we’re screwed. Somebody in the F.O. needs to take Alex out for a nice seafood dinner, buy him a new Rolex, his wife some flowers and diamond earrings, his kid some cool toys, his mom a necklace, his dad some new golf clubs, and his dog new bone….then beg the guy to forgive them and take them back. The last thing we need right now is lose our team chemistry and our starting QB. I think I’m more nervous now than I was yesterday.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @ninersroc

      My positive take:

Just kicking AS’s shins in the offseason. Make sure they don’t go soft.

      • NinersRoc says:

You might be right! That was a really good kick in the shins though! When we win our next couple super bowls with AS they gonna have to pay the man BIG TIME!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninersroc

People here were too dismissive about length of the next contract.

If the Niners win a Super Bowl within the next 3 years (assuming a 3 year contract), the Niners will have to pay him more, quicker, longer than they would if they get him for 5 years.

That can have a HUGE impact on the Niners current roster and future options of getting great top FA’s in the future.

It is not a nothing thing. I get the 3 year reason. But, too many here are acting like there is no big deal to the teams future, no impact. When I think there actually will be.

  179. DRTY 49 says:

If Alex is smart he understood 9ers had to look at PM it would have been stupidity not to.

  180. TIM_ says:

Poor Alex now knows he is just a fill in until Jh can find better or Kaep is ready. Poor us because we dont get PM. Poor Teebow because although he is not a very good QB in the NFL he ,like Alex, will probably not get another chance like he would have had with the his current team if they had really wanted him.
Now ,do we get Wallace for Kaep to throw to in the future , when he takes over for Alex and for Alex to TRY to throw to in 2012 or do we lose out on Wallace too?
Go Niners and please do your best Alex,I know you will try your best, even if the false confidence that JH worked so hard to give you last year has been shattered and you now know you are not wanted long term ( no matter what contract they offer you now.).Poor Alex, it shouldnt happen to such a nice guy.

    • bayareafanatic says:

      lol.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Tim

Wallace on last years team would have helped us get a Super Bowl.
Wallace on next years team will help us win a Super Bowl.
Wallace on our team in 7 years will help us win a Super Bowl.

Safe bet to win a Super Bowl…get Wallace.

    • ninermd says:

I wonder how that is going to affect him now. Jh built his confidence up all last year. Now he’s got a guy running back with his tail between his legs like a beaten puppy. It can’t feel good to be second option over and over again.

On another note. Denver has no weapons they will get mike Wallace next.

    • Leo says:

If we get Wallace, who will sit as our 4th receiver? Moss? Manningham? Crabtree?

    • Adam says:

I feel bad for ya Tim. I really do. I know you had a ton invested in this.

      • ribico says:

        He’s not the only one.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah, isn’t Tim such a BIG FAN of the 9ers!

      • ninermd says:

Anyone that didn’t want manning isn’t a 49er fan either. When they “thought ” manning was coming here. They turned on the FO. And thought they knew better. Now that the the 49ers were left at the altar. They are happy with the ex girlfriend. It shows you that the 49 ers don’t believe in smith. It’s going to be a weird year. Gotta feeling we don’t get close to a Super Bowl next year. This team reminds me of the jets a few years back. Mediocre qb, great defense. That wasn’t good enough. I hope not, but they look identical.

    • tutomate says:

One serious question. Cause i cant tell. Honestly. Are you for real or was that the best series of backhanded compliments I have ever read.

If it is the former, then I can get where you are coming from. If it is the latter then BRAVO.

      • Adam says:

He’s got the backhand down to a science. I’ve always wanted to ask if he’s married – none of my business but…

If so, I suspect a conversation like this has happened once or twice: “Honey I love you, you’re the most beautiful woman in the world even though you have the fattest ass on the block.”

I love ya Tim, just giving you the business, man. No harm intended – just a little razz. :P

    • exgolfer says:

The most positive take away from all this for me is the feeling that the 49ers like what they see in CK. If they didn’t like him, why would they risk him having to play this year [in the case they whiffed on both PM and AS]? The world is not falling to pieces. The 49ers have re-established themselves as one great organizations in the NFL [the HC / GM combo in the NFL, IMHO; and it's not close]. That’s what matters most. The wins will follow.

  181. LGarner says:

Manning signed with the Broncos, in a similar contrac he had with the Colts. He chose money over a Championship team. His last few years will be spent on a team that won’t go any where.

Enjoy your poor decision, a stupid one at that.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

With hindsight it wasn’t a bad decision, he stays in the AFC in a very weak division. But there are too many question marks with the entire Bronco team, and you have a defensive coach running the show. It appears signing with a sure contender as the 49ers didn’t matter in the end. If it boiled down to 10 or 20 million he sold himself short,

      “This One’s For John”.

      • LGarner says:

        Andrew…

His contract will be similar or better than the 5 year $90 million he had at the Colts. Pure money hungry and driven by those damn dollar signs.

He will waist the last few years with nothing to show for it, if he even makes it one year.

This all being said, I guess it’s good, we didn’t waist the money on him.

      • jgwindsor says:

let defensive coach coach the defense and let peyton run the offense….sounds like a hand in glove concept

wonder how much cap is left over for denver….who will be their other pickups…..

and tebow could learn a lot from peyton in the filmroom just as CK would have …..

  182. ribico says:

Looking better than 40% now, Grant?

    • NinersRoc says:

      lol!

    • oneniner says:

      lol……

    • Jack Hammer says:

Ribico, very easy to sit back and second guess instead of actually having an opinion. At least with this whole thing I think it is safe to say the Smither population was reduced by 1…

      • ribico says:

I had an opinion. Given his age, medical history, asking $, history of other top QBs not delivering for their final team, continuity of our team at the doorstep, it was my opinion that signing Manning was a terrible idea. But if that’s what the team was committed to do, then Go Niners.

I understand there are other opinions on this board. Are they still “all in”? Or are they just reveling in their idiotic notion that Alex is now some sort broken puppy running back with his tail between his legs? I am hoping Grant doesn’t encourage that with some new swipe at Alex.

      • ribico says:

        >>I am hoping Grant doesn’t encourage that with some new swipe at Alex.

Well, the hope was short-lived seeing Grant’s new column hoping for Wallace over Smith.

      • ninermd says:

Because ribico knows more than harbaugh and Baalke. Look at his picture. It’s up there because that’s all he cares about. So let’s break this down. Ribico knows more about this than every team in the nfl and the coach and GM of the year. Remember this ribico. Manning made his decision, the. 49ers wanted him instead of smith. Their outlook on this is far superior than your “fruitful” knowledge.

      • ninermd says:

Ribico… No need for grant to take a swipe at Alex for everyone to see that he is running back with his tail between his legs. Nobody wanted him, and he thought he was better than he is. The decision to really pursue manning tells you everything you need to know. The fact that he sat there and had a whopping 1 visit tells you everything you need to know. Onelame stated the 49 ers need smith more than he needs the 49ers. Well that shows you how moronic some of you smith fans are. Be happy bro. We’ve got the brides maid again. And we have the big question mark of…. Will he finally be the bride this year.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I kinda agree with the notion that he is a broken puppy dog trying to find a home. So far his only visit was to Miami, he was supposed to then go to Seattle, but they chose a career backup before he could get there. Who else would even look at him? Maybe Tennessee, but they will probably just move on with Locker since he is the future.

He is our best option, FOR NOW. This whole thing made it pretty clear that the front office sees the need for an upgrade at the QB position.

One of your great come backs to those using the term Smither was that it was ok, because Harbaugh is one too. It looks like Harbaugh isn’t quite the Smither type after all, but realizes he is only the best option left.

      • Adam says:

“This whole thing made it pretty clear that the front office sees the need for an upgrade at the QB position.”

Not necessarily. As Grant wrote yesterday or the day before, the reason for this was because: “he’s Peyton Manning.”

Manning will be a hall-of-famer sooner rather than later. If he has the juice to go and the nerves are regenerated after the stem cell thing, and you have the money, great, go for it.

I just don’t like the way they did this. Left Smith out there hanging for a few days and those few days are precious for these guys to workout with teams and move around. I think the Front Office pulled a boner on this one that will take some kiss-and-make-up time as Lombardi calls it to get fixed. Lot’s of broken trust there now.

If the objective was to upgrade with “anyone” then you’d have seen the FA parade through here. We didn’t see that. No Matt Flynn, etc. Matter of fact Manning said it was important to him to see the facilities. He apparently never came out here.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Adam, What FA QB’s would you have paraded in here that were better options than Alex Smith?

      • jgwindsor says:

i am not one of those who think AS has his tail between his legs…

AS is pretty level headed and always has been based on what we all know to be his life experiences including the death of his best friend….he is grounded…..too many think he is thin skinned and has a broken attitude …..

on the other hand harbaugh has some experience with the peyton manning replacing thing…..whatever the reason was….sure it did not come down the same way as AS…..but i think JH and AS can cross that bridge in a positive manner …

winning SB seems to be the crux of all arguments …. well except for the unending fantasy stat arguments…
and i agree…SB is the bottom line no doubt and it is a team thing…and yes peyton has past experiences towards this end that AS almost got a whiff of this year…..for the front office peyton should have been explored….

coming in with an argument that if niners can’t win a SB with AS then let’s get whomever is next …. i can’t even explore this argument with the other ledger being josh johnson, matt flynn, CK, tolzein or tebow or whomever…..it is just hard to even entertain those kind of thoughts….peyton is a niner ….so again AS is the best available left and he has passed the first JH test….he still needs to make a grand step forward by making this offense his own….

and look the biggest off season thing was to get the WR quagmire resolved and find a RG and keep that defense intact…..the front office is hitting on all cylinders on that front….they have a moss, a manningham and maybe they still have a shot at wallace if they choose to got their….

it was not wrong for the niners to go take an educated look at peyton….and AS understood and accepted for what it was….even if he was a bit miffed….anybody would be but the level of miffeness depends who it was that was taking food out of his mouth….and his miffeness level was not that high knowing it was peyton…..now if it was josh johnson, or matt flynn, and matt hasselbeck (i also don’t subscribe to the thought that hasselbeck was being courted to replace AS, compete damn right, but just out right replace is just irrational exuberance) hell, now that would be miffness

niner fans had every right to demonstrate irrational exuberance over this peyton carnival because it was peyton…

now that chapter has ended pretty much

and besides AS got out of having to change a few diapers for a couple of days….not that AS doesn’t relish the mundane things when it comes to family tree kind of stuff….

    Grant,

I love your blog…but, if my count is correct, EVERY off-season/FA call that you’ve made has been WRONG lol! Nice try though, you’ve kept us entertained. Maybe it’s a good sign! You said Moss would meet our expectations (like you said B. Edwards would). So maybe Moss puts out Pro-bowl year this year. Keep making personnel calls like that, you might actually be helping us get over the hump here lol!

Jason Cole from Yahoo called this about 20 minutes before it broke on KNBR.

Really, he is willing to come back? Alex Smith is a joke. I think even more less of him now than I have over the past 7 yrs. What a joke ……….

      more or less?

        @Adam

Judging from past posts and this one, he can’t think less. In the natural world, you can’t have less than 0. Only in society do you have less than 0.

So, by default, it has to be “more”.

Ok you keep talking about a joke but I have not heard it yet.

      Please share.

So many football morons on this board and on the Red Zone. These are the same idiots last year that were calling for McNabb, Hasselbeck, Orton, Palmer, Kolb, and Johnson. Manning would have crippled any future upgrade spending by the 49ers, and one shot to the neck from being a long-term payout disaster – all for the satisfaction of having a 300-400 ypg passer.
He is not the messiah that you all want to have him be. Do you remember his last touchdown pass of note? Yes his often replayed pick six by New Orlean’s Tracey Porter in SB XLIV. The fan board would have gone ape and called for his head if he did that as a Niner. Could he have given the offense more versatility by running a 28 yard bootleg touchdown on a critical 3rd down make? And is Harbaugh willing to compromise his WCO for more of a over the top (pass dominated) version of it. Sure he’s a HOF’er, but reminds me a lot of when Johnny Unitas signed with the San Diego Chargers. Those that can remember that far back know how that went.
