This afternoon the 49ers officially announced they’ve signed Brandon Jacobs to a one-year deal.
Trent Baalke had this to say: “The 49ers are pleased to add a player with Brandon’s wealth of experience and talent. He has been productive throughout his career, and provides our offense a different dimension. We look forward to incorporating Brandon into our system.”
Jacobs answered questions just now on a conference call, and here’s what he said.
Q: What attracted you to the 49ers?
JACOBS: The 49ers are a great organization. I played against the Niners year in a and year out and it’s always a great challenge. They’re a good football team, great ownership. It’s a team that’s on its way up to a championship, and I felt wanted. I felt like they really wanted me around and I was excited about it.
Q: What do you remember specifically about facing them last season?
JACOBS: The defense. The stinginess of the defense. They were the best defense we played all year long, both games. They didn’t give up anything. It was two great games, but that’s last year. I’m a part of this team now.
Q: How did they make you feel wanted?
JACOBS: Speaking to Trent about everything made me feel wanted. We spoke about what I could bring to the team – leadership, experience on a high stage. I felt like they really wanted me around and that me feel really good and now I’m here.
Q: Have you had a chance to talk to Frank Gore at all?
JACOBS: I haven’t spoke to Frank yet. I’m looking forward to speaking him sometime this week.
Q: Do you anticipate competing with him in training camp for playing time?
JACOBS: I think all of that’s going to work itself out. As far as competing, I think that makes any one of us better – that’s all that competing does. It makes us better as a team; it makes us better at our job. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to be able to play with Frank.
Q: Hypothetically speaking, if there’s a third-and-one are you getting the ball or is Frank?
JACOBS: Being about 25-30 pounds heavier than Frank, I would hope I would be the one to get it, but Frank has been great in that area the last seven years. He has no issues getting in. It’s whatever’s best for the team and it’s the call that Coach Harbaugh makes.
Q: Have they told you anything about your role?
JACOBS: My role’s going to come off of how much I earn. I’m going to earn everything that I get. You’re not supposed to tell someone what they’re going to do because it’s a funny game – things can work out for you one time and it can’t the next time. I’m going to get as much as I earn.
Q: Did Mario Manningham have any influence in you signing with the Niners?
JACOBS: I love Mario. He’s been my teammate for the last four years. I’ve been around him a long time. We hung out a lot. He was actually one of my really close friends on the Giants. Yes, coming out here, knowing that he was here already made it that much more comfortable for me to join the team, and not to mention I looked at it as a great opportunity because I grew up a 49er fan and I was really excited about the opportunity to become a 49er.
Q: Growing up in Louisiana how did you become a 49er fan?
JACOBS: I never did like the Saints. I never did like Dallas – that’s another team that everybody likes. When I made the pick to choose the 49ers as my team I barely knew anything about football. I was about eight years old and I only liked their uniforms. That’s what drew me to the 49ers. I even found myself cheering when they played Sunday nights when we weren’t playing against them I found myself rooting for them seven years deep into the National Football League. I was a really big fan.

49ers RSS feed
Hell yeah!! Brandon an Frank are gonna make a GREAT one two punch!! The teams culture Harbs has established will make him better!! I’m excited!!
OH!!! and not to mention he grew up a 9er fan!!! ShoooooOoOOoot!! It’s on!!
Welcome Brandon !
Honestly the 49ers are doing a SPECTACULAR job in acquiring talent and keeping it.
So far my only disappointment is the signing of Jacobs and Alex Smith. 49ers could have done better with both. Jacobs is just not the same player with fire and intensity from the past. He is too big to be tip toeing through the holes like that.
Alex Smith will always play timid and be an inaccurate passer. Harbaugh just made it wearing he did not make those boneheaded mistakes he would do in the past. Game manager basically.
Harbs has proved with Alex that he can get production out of a player and that he knows how to utilize them properly, unlike some other coach we had. I’d be very suprised if Jacobs doesn’t produce. It’s hard to believe that he won’t buy into the comradere this team has established. He’ll soon learn that no one has it better than him, and he’ll be eating it up like eggs-n-steak!!
Hey I hope so. It’s been a long time since the 49ers greatness. I have to be honest never in a million years did I think turn around would come so fast.
The 49ers were looking like the Lions when they had Matt Millen for years.
Bottom line the 49ers are back and will continue to get better.
blah blah blah
What ever Jski ! He has been slammed his whole areer and almost took us to the friggin Superbowl. It wasn’t his fault we lost to NYG.
Let the hate go bozo !
OK….your opinion matches about 2 dozen others that post here..who, rather than Alex Smith would you rather the 9er’s sign?
Who, that was an available Free Agent and could step in and take the team to the next level, should they have signed? Right now, Alex, even with his flaws is the best option, unless you can name somebody different…
Matt Flynn…He set a packers single game TD passing record. I know were only talking limited playing time. I would rather have a gunslinger, someone that has the ability to allow us to win games through the air. Everyone else…blah
How many gunslingers make into retirement to collect social security? None likely. 1 or two at most.
And did you see the same defense (Lions) play NO? No pressure on DB for like 6-10 seconds. And the secondary not covering anybody from the snap of the ball anyway.
Don’t judge anything (QB records) by playing bad team defense. And the Lions by the end of the year were the worst playoff team defense by far and away.
Update
Packers Vs. Patriots: Matt Flynn Hangs With Tom Brady In Loss
The Green Bay Packers lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football but believe it or not Packers backup QB Matt Flynn hung with MVP candidate Tom Brady for much of the game. Outside of the turnovers, you could argue Flynn outplayed Brady as he completed 24-of-37 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns while Brady went 15-of-24 for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
Let me just say: “I am a niner-lifer” I will always support my team. I just do not believe you can say that there wasn’t anyone else out there of the niners to consider. I would have seriously considered Flynn an option, with our DEFENSE providing short fields and Flynn’s ability to hit the deep routes (518yds 6TD’s) I would have to say respectfully, that, Alex Smith will never do that. We also have a very committed running game to help ease the pressure. With all of this said. I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming season(s) and relish the thought of being SUPERBOWL contenders again, and again.
Gunslingers do not make it to retirement!?! Steve Young won games with his arm, Favre, Manning(s) Big Ben, Kurt Warner, Montana, etc… The NFL is a QB driven league! A Smith played his butt off last year and should improve on his success but, he does not give the impression he will ever take over a game with his arm (except the saints playoff game, and the 2nd half of a regular season game against the seachickens).
@bfuston74,
I would say that the ’9er braintrust wasn’t that impressed with Matt Flynn, since they didn’t have him in for a tryout……or maybe he wasn’t interested in coming to SF…
inaccurate…. his percentage says different
@J Ski
Dunderhead basically
When is this game manager stuff going to end. If last year had not happened, I’d agree. However, Alex Smith was spectacular in several come from behind games, most notably against the Saints in the play-offs. He had to lead not one, but two come from behind TD drives to secure the win. “Game Managers” can’t do that.
JSki,
They tried to sign Manning and he chose Denver. Other than that, how do you think they could have improved at QB over Smith? Then answer is they couldn’t. Better to go with what you know if you can’t get the HOFer.
Shades of 1994.
The 49ers couldn’t get past the Cowboys so they raided the Cowboys’ roster. In 2011 the Giants (and Kyle Williams) were in the way so they raided the Giants roster and got some replacement receivers.
It’s coming together nicely. muahahaha
Ha Ha Ha maniacal laugh…
94′ we signed Ken Norton Jr. (cowboys). I can’t think of anyone else. Am I missing somebody? We did however trade Charles Haley to the cowgirls in August of 92′ for a 2nd rd 93′ and a 3rd rd 94′. Then we lost D Sanders to the cowgirls in 95′. I loathe the cowgirls but respect what K Norton Jr brought to the table. We also had C Doleman, Rickey Jackson, Gary Plummer, Eric Davis, Deon, Tim McDonald, and Merton Hanks along with Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield were just rookie and soph respectively. That my friend was a perfect storm. Steve Young won me over in the season’s finale an all California SUPERBOWL! 6 TD’s amazing.
I still like dixon alot ! I thnk te singletary regime messed wit his head. hes still a great special teams contributer. i hope they still keep him around and jacobs takes him underwing. gore, hunter, jacobs ….. like what the FO is doin so far. gooooooooo 9ers
I’m with you “jj” on the Dixon kid. And since its reported he is a favorite of Baalke’s, maybe he will get a chance. Let’s hope the Niners go back and take a hard look at the kids first year and how he came bursting out of the gate. Then he had to deal with Jimmy Raye enforcing the whim and will of Singletary and, according to quotes from Jimmy Raye, insisted he run a very specific way. He tried, fell on his butt, and I think he is now just a tad unsure of what he’s doing or how he’s supposed to do it. Thats my take.
If he’s still here because he’s a favorite of Baalke’s, what does that say about TB’s talent evaluation? We don’t need nepitism involved in choosing our #2 or #3 RB…we need a big RB, which Dixon is, to run north-south, which he doesn’t. Bringing in Brandon Jacobs will hopefully light a fire under the ass of AD…he has the size and speed to be a big contributor in this offense. It’ll be interesting to see if he, and Jacobs, can step up and run hard and mean like backs of their size should.
We’ll have to see. He was a beast in his prime and although he may have lost a step, he adds a new dimension. I was surprised that the 49ers added a free agent RB, but anything that makes the team better…
Bye bye Dixon… Alex Smith should be next.
Get over your hate and just look forward to another great season in 2012.
La Migra
Is Really…..”La Mierda”
Alex Smith isnt goin anywhere. You can take that to the bank.
@Fred,
Ofcourse he is not going anywhere, the only team that wanted him was the Niners, he has the face that a mother can love but no one else.
Says the hater.
Neal: Who else that was available would have taken us to one game from being in the superbowl We were the second best team in the NFC . how long has it been since we could say that There is another team across the bay you can be a fan of. Sounds like you would fit for them.
@ Darrel,
Congrats in joing the Smither cult, and drinking the Kool Aid, and ofcouse if I don’t love your man crush, I have to be a Raider fan, you appear to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
Stupidity continues….
Does it ever stop?
hhmmm I smell a man crush near by.
Then quit falling in love with yourself.
Hmmm….
I smell a 12 year old near by.
This is hilarious, NFL.com has ranked the starting QB’s for next season. Alex is ranked at 25th, I would put him at about 24th, and they have Andrew Luck ahead of poor no respect Alex. Why not, anyone with a pea brain or larger would take Luck over Smith in a New York second.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/football-san-francisco-niners/niners-talk/NFLcom-QB-rankings-Alex-Smith-gets-no-re?blockID=684248&feedID=2800
Who ever did that list is an idiot. How else would Sanchez be ranked ahead of Smith?
And Aaron Rodgers isn’t even in the top four. A pathetic list indeed.
Sanchez is better then Smith but that is not saying much, Alex could not last more the 2 years before the media and the fans threw him to the curb in N.Y
Unlike Smith, Sanchez has had the same system and a good receiving corps, yet his stats have worsened each season.
Neal: you are a true idiot.
Hi, my name is Darrel and this is my brother Darrel…
The list was made by Neal a raider in disguise. He definitely isn’t a niner fan.
Darrel,
Hey Dude, did your boyfriend break up with you, going thru some heartbreak, the light is on but nobody home. You got to be the biges nincompoop in the free world
@Darrel,
Not that I have to defend myself to a constipated loose turd, but I go to 4 to 6 Niner games a year, and never been to a Raider game, by the way are you in San Quentan now and it is computer time for the inmates.
@darrel
The Raider fans are at least loyal. Neal is not. Neal is the muck which pond scum cleans up before having their meal.
You can extract energy from all living things. What people call eating. There is no energy in Neal. Hate is not an extractable energy source in which to nourish your body. Neal is nothing. Best to ignore his incoherent hateful rants and move on.
No he’s beyond an idiot,
More like Mentally Challenged
@DS,
“Neal is the muck which pond scum cleans up before having their meal.” Thanks for the morning laugh, so that is where you go for breakfast at the pond.
@ F 40er, saw you this morning in a silver bus, with bars on the windows, what are the visiting hours at the mental ward.
@Neal
Don’t quit your Day Job
Good list. Maybe all the haters can bail out and be negative over there for a while. Let Matt deal with ‘em :)
Notice *who* changed the subject for article about BJacobs? They (Neal) just can’t help themselves. Sad.
Some people revel in misery, my friend. They can’t be positive, for whatever reason and they feel like they need to to try to bring everyone else down around them.
Whatever, I just laugh and move along. I guess it has entertainment value. :P
@Hoffer and Adam,
This link has been put up at least twice after me, so din’t blame me on the subject manner and how much can you talk about a Full Back that has past his prime, still a good pick up, but they need to get younger, FG has two years tops before he retires in Miami Beach, playing shuffel board, going to early matinees and eating early bird specials.
@Hoffer,
Grant also put that link up too, he changed the subject on his own blog. hahah
I don’t care that you hop subjects. I just don’t care for the nastiness. You did that not out of interest but because you think it’s “hilarious” and you like to take a swipe at other people who might have a different opinion about Smith.
So then… it escalates, the new guy (who also can’t control himself) takes a shot at you for doing that and then you unleash your foul mood on the blog.
Actually, I don’t even care that you do that. But it’s not contributing to anything here other than just more drama and more clutter to skip over.
Don’t get me wrong, personally, I’m OK with the constant Smith criticisms as long as they’re fair, honest, and not trying to provoke a fight. Honest opinion is always cool with me. But if it’s the same old negative bashing… what’s the point? We all get that guys like you and Jordy don’t like the guy. We get it. Really.
Neal, after LC’s blog was set up as a front end to FB, you came over to this blog. You’ve posted some good material when not only focusing on attacks against those that are being optimistic (right or wrong) about the QB play in 2012. It’s your choice to post whatever you want, but the negative overtones are past being tiresome.
Say what you want about some of the other “haters” but Neal takes it to the point of idiocy…
Thank you Hoffer and Jack,
I appreciate those compliments, funny just like Facebook I can scroll down the friends list and not read their stuff, but here people will comment one way or the other, so I will keep posting.
Neal,
You realize that it wasn’t NFL network’s ranking/opinion it was one guy that is part of their fantasy football team. Nothing special and not a big deal. AS knows he has to continue to elevate his game. Next.
Welcome Brandon, hope you can help solve our short yardage problems.
Welcome aboard Brandon Jacobs. Can’t wait to see you and the revamped offense in action. :-)
They just re signed Brett Swain
Good signing for our special teams.
Camp fodder.
Can Swain return punts?
And by return I mean not let them hit him in the knee while he stands there like a deer in the headlights?
They resigned Ginn, no need for Swanfor punting and with a draft pick for another wide receiever Williams will be cut.
J Ski – I agree with about Jacobs, he needs to stop dancing and trying to run to the outside, he should simply do what he would be best at and that’s running defenders over. I somewhat agree and disagree with you about Smith, his inconsistencies drive me as a fan crazy, but even then without Smith, the 49ers wouldn’t have been as good as they were last year. I know most of you will scream and say I’m an idiot and that the defense carried them last year which is true to a point, think about it, Smith tied a record held by the greatest QB of all time for the franchise record, 5 fourth quarter comebacks in the regular season. That is no small task, Smith did this not the defense. It was Smith who out Drew Breesed Drew Brees in the biggest game of his life in his first playoff game, not the defense. Yes he had a mediocre to bad championship game, he missed passes he should have completed that would have won the game, but the point is without Smith the 49ers wouldn’t have been in the NFC Championship and had a 13-3 record, so 49er fans, this is written by a fan that has been frustrated by Smith many times, but before you all want to throw him to the wolves and roll with someone else, remember that Smith made many key contributions in last year’s memorable season.
An objective opinion and assessment of Smith. He is not a top 10 QB but he is not a bum either. Harbaugh is smart enough to play him in a way that maximizes his talent. Last year it was a conservative approach to let our outstanding Defense and Special Team dictate the game. When he had to, Smith made ploays, and as you mentioned, produced 4th Q comebacks. I hope that a full off-season will result in him stepping up to a higher level. We’ll see.
Jacobs signed with the Niners because he saw the arrow up. He knows they got lucky last year. Plus now he doesn’t have to face this D! He will run hard bechind this up coming O line. 3rd and short, he gets the ball, saving some tread off of Gore. Don’t forget cartwright also.
Off topic, will camp Alex be held this year too, with his new recievers? I hope so. let’s get on the same page.
Brandon, Brandon, Brandon. If you can keep this same attitude consistently throughout the season, you will win the Faithful over for life!
Welcome Mr. Jacobs
brandon jacobs is hillarious
Man I am a fan right away!!! I like his attitude and the fact he always was a niner fan as a kid.
Welcome Mr B Jacobs to the 49ers family and I wish a great season. GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
The championship game is still too recent for me to like Jacobs.
I’ll probably mellow out by September.
Hahaha, mscl. True that!
I agree! Going to be intersting on who gets kept, and who is let go, we haven’t even had the draft yet and our roster looks full, except for a couple of linemen that are needed for depth or a starter at right guard.
Looks like we might be light at Safety too. If Madieu Williams finds a team in free agency then I suppose we need to look at that area.
I don’t remember hearing his name a lot and he hasn’t been re-signed obviously, so maybe we need to look at that area anyway.
Adam, Williams barely played after week 4. They have CJ Spillman and Colin Jones as backups right now, and will probably add another through the draft.
Look for them to draft Eddie Pleasant, SS out of Oregon in round 6.
Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Safety in the draft. Although Williams could be back on the cheap if he’s not signed elsewhere.
Neither would surprise me.
He was in Washington yesterday…
@Adam
I could care less where Williams goes.
Go back to that Cowboy game. The Cowboys were setting position for their kicker for the game winning FG, when the RB fumbled the ball on his last run!
Williams was standing right there. Never saw the ball rolling on the ground next to him. A stupid Cowboy player (they are all stupid) jumped on it to keep possession, and the kicker wins the game.
If Williams saw that ball, the Niners would have won that game. Without question.
I feel that until a player himself fails to come through, that each one the Niners bring on board is a legitimate contributor. With each personnel move, I reflect on the teams track record up to the moment, and I relax. I have no idea how other player personnel do it (Heck, I don’t know how our own does it) but however it is done by Baalke and his people it has been almost letter perfect. Except for the wideout Ron whatshisname drafted last year that did not make the roster, Baalke would be batting a perfect one thousand in personnel moves. Think about it. And now we have new (to us) additional seasoned and experienced offensive weapons – and – the entire off season to learn offensive AND defensive playbooks Frank Gore, Delanie, Vernon Davis and others say they hardly even “dented” last year. Think about that NFL – and Weep!
Hey, Brandon Jacobs and I became 49er fans the same way! I was about 8, and only liked their uniforms, and didn’t wanna be a Redskins fan. Badass :D
Just hope Jacobs comes to camp in shape with renewed energy. He may be more of a backup plan than a regular contributor, providing he makes the roster. This move could be a motivating factor for Dixon or he could be looking for a new address. The move may be a sign that the Niners will not go for a running back in the first three rounds. However, nothing Baalke does would surprise me. It’s great to have a GM and Coach that are thinking moves in advance.
Speaking about becoming a fan for a team outside your city. I have a friend who moved from Denver to the Central Valley several years ago. You might have guessed it, his dad and family were huge Bronco fans.
He invited me to visit after he bought a new house in Sanger, CA. A beautiful home, but lo and behold he had a swimming pool built with a giant Minn. Vikings logo painted on the pool floor.
His office was littered with nothing but Vikings memorabilia.
I had to ask him why the turning from the Broncos to the Vikings.
He said that his father took him to a Broncos vs. Vikings game and after the game he and his dad waited for their Bronco heros to pass by so they could ask for autographs.
Their favorite player was the great Floyd Little. But when he came close for an autograph he completely ignored their request. As an 10 yr my friend said he felt like his world stopped and he was very upset. Suddendly, he felt a large hand on his shoulder saying, “Hey young man, I’ll sign an autograph for you if you want.” Turns out the player was a Viking star named Jim Marshall.
A good deed is often rewarded. Jim Marshall got into trouble with the law back in the 2007. Bud Grant (former coach) went to his trial and pleaded with the judge to give Marshall another chance. Among one of the letters of recommendation on behalf of Jim Marshall presented by Bud Grant was one by this now successful man who has since become a minister and pastor of a thriving church in the Central Valley and who leads a coalition of county and city police depts. in the fight againt gangs.
Sorry if I bored you, but the Brandon Jacobs story about being a 49er fan while living in a different city brought back this memory.
Hey that’s a great story, AES!
Nice. What comes around goes around. Good stuff. :)
DAMN GOOD STORY, AES*!! I enjoyed that!! That’s awesome. Jim Marshal will always hold a special place in my heart … well for the obvious reasons, haha!! But anyway .. cool story AES*!!
nice story! thanks for sharing it
Great story.
Loved the Purple People Eaters back in the 70′s
Page, Marshall, Sutherland & Eller. Great Front 4!
Yeah, I really respected that group! Page!
A short story I’ll always remember about Eller; it’s poignant in these Bountygate times. After a close-fought game between the Pack & Vikes Eller was being interviewed and asked about beating Forrest Gregg for a couple of sacks. The guy said something like “so why didn’t he just cut you or chop at your legs?” Eller responded “Because he doesn’t play the game that way, and neither do I.”
Uplifting,thanks for sharing that story!
19 days and 20 hours.
Draft time! :D
Indeed, and counting! Where is my buddy Hof?Sorry I missed your draft post but I was not interested in the hate campaign a few posts ago so I was tuned out briefly.You may be correct about Fleener being gone for us in the first.I think Kendall Reyes would be a very strong pick in the first ,another guy I like (I think Razor mentioned him recently) is Shea McClellin OLB either would me happy.Or would we pick Zeitler OG? Hard to say.I really like C. Polk(although I’m leaning toward Turbin in the third still)!I think it entirely possible we pick two WR ‘s in the middle/late middle rounds,pick em:Quick;Streeter;Toon;Wylie etc. Does Trumaine fall that far?Let me give a stab at a non Fleener mock:(1) Zeitler OG;(2) Shea McClellin OLB;(3)Turbin RB;(4)Toon WR;(5) Streeter WR;(6)David Molk C;(7)Donnie Fletcher CB .Nice work Hof keep em’ coming!
Here’s one for ya:
I keep seeing Hill pop up for us in the late first round on some of these mocks. Here’s what I don’t get though, NFL Net and I think at least one other outfit that is ranking these guys has him as a 4th round talent (based on previous performance.) http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/profiles/stephen-hill?id=2533537
I guess my question is: If Hill is ranked in that area by several different sources, why in the world would we make that kind of a stretch to pick him up that early? Purely based on speed?
I’ve seen a few mocks by guys like Charles Davis (who I have a ton of respect for) putting Stephen Hill with the Niners at that pick.
Based on value, if Hill and Fleener are both there at the same time? I take Fleener 99 times out of a 100.
Adam, I completely agree with you. My only concern is, are we high on Fleener because he is THAT GOOD, or is it because we know him better from watching him play almost every game because he is local?
Yeah, I don’t know. Good question.
I’d say there’s some of both. Experts are saying he is THAT good. A difference maker, etc.
But yeah, we’ve seen him play and for the most part he passes the average fan’s “eye ball” test I guess, too.
Interesting thought.
I keep thinking we’re going to go offense in the first round because the offense needs more help, in general, but Hofer’s point below about keeping the defense “elite” also rings true to me.
I don’t know, I didn’t do real well last year with my mock. Hard to second guess these guys when they have their eyes on them 24/7 and know every scrap of info on them.
Could be because Hill is being compared to Randy Moss that because we now have Randy Moss, maybe the thought is that this kid can learn the route tree from Moss, learn to read defenses better, etc.
Almost seems to me though that if you’re going that way (picking a receiver,) Alshon Jefferey might be the better choice because he’s different than those two guys, more of a physical guy with big hands but with less speed.
Besides his obvious size and talent, you have to appreciate his attitude. Notice how many times he said “earn”…that plays right into Harbaugh’s philosophy. The big guy can save considerable wear ‘n tear on Gore…I’m happy to have him. Now we have our own version of “earth (Jacobs), wind (Hunter) and fire” (Gore). Can’t wait for the season. Welcome, Big Guy!
Jacobs is going to make a Big Impact in the Red Zone this season.
There’s not a uniform that looks better on the green battlefield than the Scarlet & Gold of the San Francisco Forty Niners!!!! Go baby go!
@Razor
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. I agree, but we’re Homers on that one!
BTW, the ‘Bolts old classic uniforms looked excellent, but they don’t know how to accessorize; they never got any jewelry! Them Niners got Lotsa rings. :>)
Good article. The 9ers still need a RB in the draft. TB will find someone probably in the 3rd round. Looking forward to the draft!
Good Morning Hof,look above.
Top, good morning I noticed you saw my latest mock 4.0? There was one clown that didn’t like me posting my draft but I stayed above the fray this time. lol
I like Zeitler, and Toon is moving up the draft boards. They definitely need a RB especially if FG breaks down and BJac doesn’t pan out. The 9ers are playing it very cool which leads me to believe they may draft a defensive guy in the 1st round to try and stay elite on that side of the ball. You may be right about Tramain Thomas – drafting at the bottom of each round is like having a 1st that is actually a 2nd and so on. But hey, looking forward to the 9ers adding talent and hopefully beefing up the offense. Let’s keep the mocks coming…
Yeah I saw that,uncalled for and made himself into jackass- for what???
Here’s a thought.
Indy trades up from the top of the 2nd to the bottom of the 1st (or somewhere around there) and picks up Fleener.
Gives Luck his #1 Target. :P
Not that big of a jump, maybe 100 points difference, if that. So a straight swap and a 4th round pick?
@Adam
Hey, I came up with that earlier!
: – )
I don’t think it is that bad of an idea. If Fleener is all that, I could see the Colts trading away a bunch of picks to get up to the first round (mid) and then they can get Luck and his safety blanket in the same draft.
Get the other guys later. This team will stink no matter what. Might as well get Luck the one guy he knows the best to help them both get use to life in the NFL.
I wouldn’t mind giving up our first to the Colts for their 1st next year, Straight up.
@Hof
Where is your mock, looking forward to seeing it and giving some commentary.
Andrew,
Here’s my last two mock drafts and will update with my latest mock draft (5.0) on Monday.
Mock 3.0:
1. Coby Fleener, TE (Speaking with my heart, otherwise draft SHill in this spot)
2. Chris Polk, RB (Runs inside, good blocker, can catch out of the backfield)
3. James Brown, G (Major upside with quickness and strength)
4. Tramain Thomas, S (Attacking turnover machine fits 9ers D style)
5. Jerry Franklin, ILB (ST guy and potential backup)
6. Sean Cattouse, SS (Best of the rest)
7. Mason Cloy, C (Best of the rest)
Mock 4.0:
1. KReyes, DT (DT/DE with power)
2. CPolk, RB (all-around back)
3. NToon, WR (Moving up the white boards with positive pro day)
4. TThomas, S (Has a knack for hawking the ball)
5. They trade the 5th round pick for a 3rd round in 2013
6. JFuller Jr., WR
7. DDennis, OG
Polk looks solid, if he’s drafted Jacobs or Dixon will be history. Reyes is another good pick only drawback is the level of competition. Now Flenner, I don’t know, one has to go through all the hype of the Stanford connection. With all the receivers signed will they go that route? Polk reminds me of Ray Rice.
I HAAATE Teddy Buschi. This guy first is a NE homer. He would pick the Damn Pats over the All Madden Team, second He’s saying The NFL shouldnt destroy GW carrer? WTF? This is a coward that tried or didnt give a crap about players careers. Bruschi is a Moron and of course after being part of The Billacheat scandal, He’s looking for GW to have another chance. Pathetic! If it was against the Pats He’d be screaming for a lifetime ban.
Funny thing is he’s from San francisco. He’s just trying to ruffle feathers to get his name out there.
Looks like Warren Sapp is a sap with his money.
Warren Sapp files for bankruptcy
Updated: April 7, 2012, 12:39 PM ET
Associated Press
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former NFL star Warren Sapp owes more than $6.7 million to creditors and back child support and alimony, according to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing in South Florida.
Sapp’s $6.45 million in assets includes 240 pairs of Jordan athletic shoes worth almost $6,500, a $2,250 watch and a lion skin rug worth $1,200. He also reported losing his 2002 Super Bowl ring with the Bucs and his 1991 national championship ring from the University of Miami.
Sapp
The court documents were filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Lauderdale on March 30. TMZ.com first reported the filing. A phone message and email left Saturday with his attorney, Chad Pugatch, were not immediately returned.
Sapp’s average monthly income is $115,881, according to the filings, and includes $45,000 for a final contract payment with Showtime, $48,000 for an appearance with CCA Sports and $18,675 as an advance for a book deal. His contract with the NFL Network ends in August, the filings show, and it was unknown if the contract will be renewed.
Sapp, a former defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders during his 13-year NFL career, was also once a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
He was arrested in 2010 following an alleged domestic violence incident at a Miami Beach hotel. He would have faced one count of misdemeanor domestic battery, but prosecutors declined to prosecute saying in court documents that there were inconsistencies in the victim’s statements and evidence.
Interesting link. Rating of all players at their respective position. Some notables. Justin Smith 1 out of 64, Alex Smith 14 out of 50, Patrick Willis 1 out 64 and Bowman 2 out of 64. Got the two best inside linebackers in football according to this guy.
http://bleacherreport.com/nfl1000
my mistake inside linebacker were 1 out 40 and 2 out of 40
Bleacher report is hardly interesting… Anyone can post blogs there. The name says it all.
These one year signings remind me of the 93 season when we brought on guys to win a superbowl. Very Carmen Policyisc. The only concern I have is that this team might end up like the 2011 Eagles. There isn’t time for some of these offensive weapons to build chemistry. I think the offseason and minicamps will be instrumental in this teams success. They have a VERY hard schedule, but the team is certainly talent stacked for the first time in almost 20 years.
Medic, That was ’94.
Kiper has us getting Hill 1st round. If he ends up on the board when we draft is there anyway we would pass him up?
And if anyone says we should take Fleener over Hill, assuming they both were available, I’d slap the taste out of their mouth.
Adam707,
And if anyone says we should take Fleener over Hill, assuming they both were available, I’d slap the taste out of their mouth.
I’d take Fleener and I’m currently cyberblocking your slap attempt.
The reasoning is simple: Fleener is the better player. Hill is a size,weight and speed marvel who has produced little on the field. There is the potential of him becoming a better player with pro coaching but if you are drafting for BPA, Fleener is the guy you take between the two.
He only produced so little due to the offensive scheme at Georgia Tech. I just cant see why any team would pass on this guy. Potential is through the roof, yes could be a bust, but could be the next big time WR.
You just answered the question as to why you take Fleener over Hill. Hill is all potential; no substance. He has little on film to show he can be a difference maker at the pro level. Fleener has proven to be a big threat receiver at the TE position at a time when that is becoming a trend in the NFL.
I’m not in anyway saying Hill can’t become a good pro, but if you take him you do so based on what he could be, not what he has shown already. That is what is called a big time gamble and if I have a player like Fleener available, I’m not gambling on the other guy.
I’d take Fleener over Hill. The value on Fleener is better.
With Fleener you get a starter, day one. With Hill you get a raw project (albeit with serious speed.)
The draft guys have Fleener as a late first round, early second round guy. NFL Net has Hill as a fourth-round talent at this point.
Both are fast, both are good size. You may not go wrong with either one but if it was a tie? I’d take Fleener.
I agree with you on Moss, he’s this year’s Isaac Bruce and may not make it through the season let alone be available next year so we do have to do something there (unless Ginn is the guy again.)
“With Fleener you get a starter, day one. With Hill you get a raw project”
I dont believe Fleener will come in and start day one. He will be a passing down player. DW and VD has both proven they are top of the line blockers, Fleener still has question marks in that area. I just see Hill having more upside in our offense.
If Hill and Fleener are both there when the 49ers pick they should go with Fleener.
Makes alot more sense to draft a player like Hill than Fleener, considering Moss will be gone in one season and it will be only Crab and Manningham. And if Hill shows us something his rookie year we could possibly go with DS’s plan of cutting MC (Although i do not like that plan, nor do i think the niners would do that). I’m just not a fan of Fleener and think people are looking way too far into the fact that Harbaugh coached him.
@Adam707
No.
My plan is to blackmail the GM of the Cards to get him to trade us LF in exchange for MC and some picks. If the Cards are as messed up as the NO’s franchise, it might not be impossible.
: – )
But, assuming we don’t get either LF or Wallace, my plan was actually to go Best Player Avialable in the first round (not WR since we have stank at picking WR’s in the frist round since JR). Then go WR, WR, WR for most of the rest of the draft. Get at least 3 WR’s.
Then have them all battle it out in Training Camp. Whoever has the best camp (I guess the best two) those are the starters. I don’t care how much money they are set to make or their draft position. If that includes MC, great. If not, then don’t let that force you to keep him around. MC is earning a ton of money. If he is not top 2, then the Niners must force him to renegotiate or cut him. We can go with the other best two (our starters) and whomever else we have in 3-5.
P.S. This in a way is true for both Moss and Manningham as well. If they don’t make top 3 after the WR competition in Training Camp, and lets just say MC is the best, then they should be cut as well. Moss, I don’t see really wanting to be a #4, and Manningham was decent last year, but only in the presence of the Giant starters. He needs to prove himself to be of starter quality.
It makes just as much sense to go with Fleener because Delanie Walker is on the last year of his contract. In Fleener you get a big bodied, fast sure handed playmaker that you know fits the system. Hill has a lot more question marks, and they can still get good value for a WR later in the draft.
Im still convinced Niners will extend Delaine before the season ends. They wont want him to become a FA, but then again he may be looking for a chance to be a #1. But if i have a choice of DW or Fleener, I’ll choose DW, he is a proven asset in both passing game and blocking game. With Fleener you will only get the passing game. WR’s still has more question marks than our TE’s, so i say go WR. Plus i dont believe Fleener would thrive in our offense like many think.
Adam and Jack , Fleener no question about it!
Adam707,
But if i have a choice of DW or Fleener, I’ll choose DW, he is a proven asset in both passing game and blocking game. With Fleener you will only get the passing game. WR’s still has more question marks than our TE’s, so i say go WR. Plus i dont believe Fleener would thrive in our offense like many think.
You’ve completely lost me here. I can’t agree with anything you’ve said in this post.
Walker may be a proven asset, but he’s not a very good one. He’s a solid player but he’s done nothing to support the claim you are making. Fleener is the superior player in every way except blocking and like Walker, he can develop that aspect over time.
Re. question marks at TE vs. WR, I don’t agree with that either. Walker is in the last year of his contract and we have little in the way of proven talent beyond he and Davis. The other issue is the draft is full of talent at WR, while having little depth at TE. You’ll get good talent at WR well into day 3.
Your last comment has me shaking my head. How do you say something like Fleener won’t thrive in this offense when he has his entire time at Stanford? He’s played in this exact same offense for the exact same Coaching staff and thrived. This viewpoint has zero merit imo.
People View Fleener as a Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski type, but forget we have Alex Smith as a QB, not Brady or Brees. Smith isn’t the type of QB who is gonna just throw the ball into coverage and expect Fleener to make a play. If you watch how Graham plays, around half of his catches are made while leaping higher than a LB and coming down with it. Smith WONT make those throws to anyone, let alone a rookie TE. Say what you want about Fleener but I’ll take a proven NFL TE over an unproven rookie anyday
That’s why you don’t want Fleener? Very poor excuse Adam.
Reason i dont want Fleener is becuase we have more need for a WR, RG, DT than a TE. Plus i dont believe he is the amazing player every makes him out to be
With this entire board mostly thinking the Niners will pick Fleener, and Baulke keeping things close to his chest, I would bet he picks someone else.
Can’t argue with you there Neal. I wouldn’t be surprised if Baalke went DL with their first pick.
Adam,
I like Fleener because he would bring an extra wrinkle to the offense with his height and speed. Add the fact that Walker is a free agent after next season and will probably want to be a #1 TE on another team. It doesn’t hurt to strengthen an already solid position on offense. A quality WR can be picked up later in the draft.
NBC Bay Area News:
“The search for a missing 15-year-old Morgan Hill girl who disappeared near her home three weeks ago.
Volunteers were asked to meet Burnett Elementary School, located at 85 Tilton Ave. in Morgan Hill early on Saturday morning.
Joining the search for the missing girl were local 49ers’ players, including quarterback Alex Smith and left tackle Joe Staley.
Smith has joined previous searches for the teenager and Saturday several of his teammates followed suite.
Over the past three weeks volunteers investigators have also received over 1,000 tips.
Law enforcement and volunteers have put in hundreds of man hours searching several miles around Morgan Hill.”
Off topic, but I just wanted to confirm something we all can agree on when discussing Alex Smith. Great Human Being, and quickly becoming a Great Leader!
@AES
Just a hunch, but I think AS was a Great Leader and have done things like this before last year. Just a hunch.
@DS,
Is that unusual that professional athlethes go searching for missing kids, or visit cancer stricken children at hospital ward or work at a soup kitchen for the homeless or donate their money to charities Yes Alex is a great human being, but he is not a trail blazer in these sort activities and perhaps a great leader off the football field.
“According to various Twitter posts and BANG photos, Smith was joined in the search by left tackle Joe Staley, linebacker Patrick Willis and tight end Delanie Walker.”
From Inman at the Merc.
@neal: I don’t see any Raiders players out there. Do you?
And Scott Tolzien.*
Alex Smith is once again showing that he’s a great person.
Has absolutely nothing to do with football though.
It does if you keep the old Joe Gibbs quote in mind. Something like: “talent can keep you in ball games but character wins in the fourth quarter.”
Fitting that it’s this group of guys out there, in my opinion.
@Adam
Appropriate quote in all regards. Those 4 guys are 4th quarter big play guys, and all have that same strong character.
@ Adam
Alex Smith lives in Los Gatos about 20 minute drive to Morgan Hill, also many of the Niners live in Santa Clara County close to Morgan Hill so they feel more compelled because of this happenning close by.
@Adam.
Per your Joe Gibbs quote, yes Alex Smith has strong character but not the talent that is needed as to be a great QB. I think we can agree to that.
They aren’t “compelled” to do anything, Neal.
They don’t have to do a damned thing. They could all be out tuna fishing and drinking beer. There doesn’t have to be a reason or a motive for this other than they may genuinely care about what happens to this girl and her family and they just want to help. Might just be a kind thing to do for the community.
Separate thing: I don’t agree on your talent assessment. My position has always been (and I agree with Ray Ratto on this) that we’ve never known what Smith’s potential is because of all the chaos above him and out of his control. Coaching changes, poor systems, injuries, minimal talent at wideout are not things he had any control over. I’m also not an absolutist / extremist fortune teller like some here. I have no idea whether Smith will ultimately prevail or not. Personally, I hope he does. He’s a nice guy who deserves some success (and some good luck) and it helps MY team to win – bottom line.
We’re just now starting to see what’s what. I believe Smith holds the record for the most Q4 comebacks of ANY 49er QB. So to say he has no talent is wrong and he has the ability (and Gibbs’ “character”) to bring us back in big games. We all saw it and some of the haters were literally gagging here while it happened. You haven’t been here long, go back and search for backpedaling.
Here’s what we know for sure: All these guys who are out there helping also have that same kind of character. Big hearts, that’s all there is to it.
It’s a good thing, Neal. It’s not a bad thing. There’s no secret agenda, it appears to be what it is: helping.
The search really doesn’t have anything to do with football anyway (other than a show of character.) In the context of 49erland it looks like it’s about some guys that are above celebrity and just want to bring this kid home safe and help this family out. Let’s face it, nine times out of ten these things don’t end well (I’m not a religious person but I hope to god I’m wrong and she’s OK somewhere) but at least these guys have some heart (along with all the other volunteers out there) and are trying to make a difference in their community and do the right thing.
In a news age where all we hear about is all the crap these guys get in to with DUIs, suspensions or see snarky remarks about a player’s financial difficulties, it’s nice to see a hopeful story out there where some guys are still trying to do the right things.
That’s all I’m saying.
@Adam,
Many of the agents of these players encourage the players to do these sort of activities. Lee Steinberg always put in their clauses they have to do charity work or good will work and that being said AS is a great human being, but that has nothing to do with his incompetence on the football fied, his biggest supporter, Harbaugh called him a elite QB, that was not true, if it was they would not of gone after Peyton Manning or bring in Josh Johnson, or give him a 1 yr contracit n a 3 year term, plus no other team in the NFL wants the guy, and that was proven in free agency.Lastly opinions are like assholes everyone has one. You have yours and I have mine.
Which is always negative Neal.
Sorry Midwest Smither,
You call it negative, have you seen Grant discuss your boy wonder, he believes that Smith is ranked number 25 in the NFL, so I guess he is negative too. waaahhhh
What’s that got to do with your negativity Neal? You don’t have any type of optimism whatsoever. According to you the 49ers will stink no matter what next year just because Smith will be the QB. Try having faith in everyone on the team, including Alex Smith. And read my posts before calling me something that’s far from the truth. If you do, then you’ll see I’m a fan of the team and not just one player. You’ll also see that there is a QB I woils love to have on this team on nothing flat. I just hope his current team continues to low-ball him.
Would, not woils. Don’t even know how my keyboard app considers woils a word, not do I want to know.
Not negative at all, just want Smith replaced dude I go to 4 to 6 home games a year , I am a fan of the team. What QB are you interested in, don’t really follow anyone on here, I come and go, especially during SHARKS playoffs.
@Neal
Why don’t you do a google search for
“Ray Ratto and Larry Fitzgerald”
You’ll get an article where Ray Ratto has the same dream I have about getting LF.
So, please, before you resort to your name calling, come to grips with the fact that the most critically rewarded local writer wishes to have LF, how stupid am I? How hateful are you?
P.S. He comes to the same conclusion I did. We didn’t lose that Title game because of AS. But because MC isn’t all that great and LF on this team would make it a Super Bowl winner. So, in the drags of the off-season dream of getting him on this team. Not PM.
Drew Brees. He would fit this offense perfectly. As for Smith, I’m wanting to see if he can develop into a better QB under a coach that actually cares about and understands the position. He will have to take a big step in production this season, but I believe he can with Harbaugh as his mentor.
@DS,
So both you and Ray had a dream, well maybe if we had Drew Brees with Larry Fitzerald, that would be really great. A dream, just a dream. Sweet Dreams, I like to win the lotto too.
DS,
What applies to Alex Smith also applies to Michael Crabtree. Yes he had a bad go in the playoffs, but that was his first go-around. And Crabtree didn’t lose the Title game; the 49ers lost the title game. I am holding judgment on him until I see what he does this offseason and the 2012-2013 season.
Not me Neal. I like to earn a living, not have it given to me. That might be why I like Harbaugh as our coach. He and I have the same mentality when it comes to that. Nothing wrong with winning the lotto though. I could pay off some bills with that.
@midwest
AS 6TD’s, 0 TO’s in the playoffs. Second best playoff QB next to Eli Manning.
MC, dropped almost as many passes as he caught. You have the right to disagree about why the Niners lost the title game. But, they dared the WR’s to beat them, and the WR’s could not even get 2 catches. Our best WR covered by a non-Pro Bowl CB did zilch. Our OL was decent. Our RB’s catching the ball were decent. AS running the ball was decent. AS throwing the ball to VD was great (as was VD).
The only thing that the Giants really dominated against us was the WR position. Their WR’s production vs. ours. If we had just a little more, we win that game. AS played EM to a draw. 2 TD’s a piece, 0 TO’s.
It has been true for all of MC’s time here. AS does well throwing it to just about anybody else. Can’t ignore that fact.
DS,
I still say that we wait and see what happens this upcoming season. Smith did good, but after the roller coaster ride he has been on, I actually expected it. Crabtree meanwhile has never really had anything rattle his nerves during his pro career. I suspect that played a role in his poor play. Let’s see if he can overcome that.
@Midwest,
I was just about to do a post on what are the chances that we can get Drew Brees, perhaps he might want to leave the Saints, because he didnot get the contract he wanted and the Saints are in disarray, it might be a blessing in disguise that he didnot get a long term deal.
The shame of it all, is we could of gotten Brees back in 2005 when the Chargers were looking to trade him but we already picked AS and the rest is history. One has a Super bowl ring and a Hall of Fame career and the other 1 good season if you do a curve in 7 yrs.
Neal,
I think any QB would have struggled with the merry-go-round at the OC position and Nolan’s/Singletary’s offensive philosophy of “RUN THE FOOTBALL UNTIL EVEN A PEE-WEE TEAM CAN FIGURE OUT OUR GAMEPLAN, THEN RELUCTANTLY PASS BECAUSE WE ARE DOWN BY TWENTY-FIVE POINTS(AT LEAST) AND HOPE THAT STRATEGY WORKS”. That’s at least what I think Neal. But for the record, I was pining for Brees back then too.
I believe the Org will do a ‘shake-down’ move and go for a stud O-lineman with the first pick.
The problem with choosing a WR in the first is that among the two names being mentioned (Fleener and S.Hill), neither of them were dominating at there position. Fleener has great speed and size but is he strong at blocking which comes with the territory? Hill offers the same credentials with speed and size, but his numbers were not overly impressive.
So the fact that they were not dominant at their positions makes me leery. The only WR’ worthy of first rd manuvering are IMO, Blackmon, Floyd, and Wright. I still believe there is good value for a viable WR from the 2nd – 4th rounds.
If Alex needs a little more time to make his ‘reads’ in the pocket, the O-line will need to provide it. For the first time in recent memory, the 49ers are not in desparate to fill positions. The Org has done a tremedous job of anchoring almost all positions for a great run in 2012 and beyond.
Interesting note; The NFL Network will air a program on April 28th where current players will be asked to grade their peers.
@AES
I can see that happening.
But, this OL had best be the best OL like…ever. They will have spent a #1 draft pick on 4 positions (if they draft a guard) and have a Pro Bowl vet Center.
No more of this deal of holding in a RB to help block or VD/DW/other TE. If we spend that much on our OL, they better be damn good. Like Cowboys in the mid/early 90′s good. If the defense brings in 6, they better be able to block them with 5. Hard? Yep. But expectations of an all #1 draft pick along the OL, they will be extremely high.
If we are not this good, we will be like the Lions with Matt Millen. Draft WR’s every year with your first pick, and not getting the best production from those guys.
@AES
Two or three years ago, I agreed almost implicitly with your posts; something seems to have messed your oatmeal in that time….but I DO agree with you on this one….we just may go big time in Oline. IMHO, there are 2 1/2 positions still open on the Oline. I still believe that MM is the real thing, and Randy Moss CAN be even more; but that we still need two QUALITY receivers in the draft. Happy Easter!
Sorry to disappoint you Oreganiner. Maybe too much suger in my oatmeal (lol).
Happy Easter
Another 1st Round Pick spent on an Offensive Lineman? I don’t think so.
unless it’s De castro…
I would not trade up for him unless it was just a couple spots and that’s not going to happen.
Fleener would have the advantage of having had Harba ugh as his coach but as I mentioned earlier he did not dominate his position. There are some NFL talkingheads that have Fleener going in the second round.
I disagree. He did dominate his position. The difference was Stanford like the Niners, were a run first team. They spread the ball around in the passing game and Fleener was their second leading receiver. More impressive was the fact he averaged nearly 20 yards a catch! This guy is a huge mismatch and big play threat.
Because he knows the offense Fleener could contribute from day one. Any other receiver taken at #30 would likely have a minimal impact in 2012. A raw guy like Hill might have more upside in the long run than Fleener.
I could see Harbaugh using Hill the way Fangio used Aldon Smith though. Limit Hills responsibilities and coach him up to do a few specific things very well. The rub is those would likely be the same things Randy Moss does.
This is gonna be a long 19 days. Can’t they just do the draft tomorrow?
I want the draft yesterday. lol
Fleener should be the first TE off the board. I wouldn’t mind drafting him and maybe trading Walker for a third rd pick maybe. We can’t carry too many TE’s but Fleener is one of those every five year TE’s. He also knows the system and would fit in immediately. I think the way the Niners have been signing free agents, tells me they’re going for it now. So if that’s the case, make your first rounder count now, helping the team right away, while the other players drafted sit behind our starters learning and getting playing time when were way up on someone; Like the good old days. I really hope they go for some stanford players they find valuable in the later rounds if not free agency.
This is our time Niner empire, arrow UP UP UP UP and we get a new stadium soon. O.K, I’m pumped enough now to go hit someone!! anyone up for some tackle football? lol ok, breathe…….LET’S GO!!!!!
I still like the idea of adding a guy like Shea McClellin with Aldon Smith creating the Teutonic Terror.
I’m starting to get in line with your thinking. Adding a defensive player that’s a difference maker could make the D top ten for years. I’ve seen several mocks that had Brockers falling to 30, if we ever got him it would be a steal.
It’s the 80-20 rule. Focus 80% of your effort on what you do well.
The 49ers do defense very well.
Razor agree on McClellin, might even get him in the second,Rang has him at 57 on the big board as a second rounder.As Hof pointed out earlier, picking on the cusp of the first round( and likewise in the subsequent rounds in order) is tantamount to a high 2nd round pick,so depending on who is available one could make a case the 49ers might take say Zeitler in the first.
Am I the only one who thinks Justin Blackmon looks like a Crabtree clone?
I don’t see it, he looks alot bigger and meaner then Crabs
He looks a bit bigger but he also looks sort of slow and gimmicky. Lots of bubble screens and hitches against inferior college DBs.
I’m not seeing speed on tape just like I didn’t see speed in Crabtree’s tape. When he’s open it’s not because he blew someone away it’s because the defense sucked.
I’m starting to agree with Cosell. Floyd > Blackmon
Nah msc…The Crabtree clone is Wright from Baylor.
Watch the OSU/Stanford game, and all of Blackmons big plays came off NFL type routes, slant, crossing route, 15 yard curl. If he were to drop to a point we could pick him up, we should get him. He could be a starter by mid-season if not sooner…
Here are the highlights, not a hitch or bubble among them…
http://espn.go.com/ncf/video?gameId=320020197
http://espn.go.com/ncf/video?gameId=320020197
http://espn.go.com/ncf/video?gameId=320020197
If the 49ers make a move I’d like to see them go after Floyd. What I’ve seen of him looks really good. It’s starting to look like he’ll go top 10 though. Top 15 at worst. That would be a costly move.
Wright just seems to small to me. After growing up with Clark, Rice, Taylor and Owens I’m biased against little Rams style receivers.
Rueben Randle seems to have dropped off of everyone’s radar. Is he still considered a 1st round pick?
Good thing the Saints can’t take him. He’d have been used for pinata practice during OTAs. :P
Funny
I only saw Justin Blackmon in the game against Stanford. He looked more like a slightly shorter T.O. clone.
I have no idea if the productivity displayed in that game would translate to the NFL. I’m still hoping for Hill or Fleener.
@msc
They’re both good college receivers. However, the NFL has corner-backs with more speed than them and they can’t separate. Crabtree did a very good Claude Rains impression during the playoffs.
Ha! I must be getting befuddled, it took me a minute to get that Claude Raines reference; The Invisible Man. I was stuck trying to make the metaphor work with The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Happy Easter Niner brotha’s!
Anyone else hoping “Lefty” (Mickelson) gets it done at the Masters today? Tiger has played more like a kitten.
Brandon Jacobs was a great signing, we needed some swag on offense. He’s one tough S.O.B.
They’re replaying the 9ers at Detroit on the NFL channel as we speak!
Dontari Poe DT
Shea McClellin OLB
Stephen Hill WR
Coby Fleener TE
Chandler Jones DE
Janoris Jenkins CB
Who’s the pick from this group?
If Jenkins falls to 30 I’d take him. He’s got some issues but purely on talent he’s the best CB in the draft behind Claibourne.
Fleener
Gonna have to start calling you a Fleenerer. Fleenerite? Fleenerian?
I’m with Adam707 – not sold on Fleener. I get the feeling he won’t hold up to NFL pounding.
The defense is stacked, with all the starters returning and most of the backups too. They need to get playmakers on offense that can make a quick impact which is why I like Fleener. He is big, fast, sure handed and comes in knowing the system from day 1. He would be a matchup nightmare on 3rd down and in the red zone. Moss, Davis, Fleener, whichever one is single covered will kill you.
My only concern is that I am biased on Fleener having watched him so much during his time at Stanford.
The defense is stacked but there are a few key pieces that are over 30.
Fleener would be a boost in 2012 but a good corner or DL could be a replacement in 2013 to keep the defense great.
I’m not gonna complain if the 49ers take Fleener though. I just think there is better value at #30.
They are stacked at corner. Brown is young, Culliver will be in only year 2, they just signed Rogers for multiple years, and they have 3 other young guys that help provide depth.
On the DL they have a ton of young depth that they are developing behind the starters, and they have Smith and Brooks as their rush ends in the nickle/dime.
Fleener helps them immediately in 2012, and also in the future since Walker is a free agent after this season. I am sure they will try to re-sign him during the season, but we all saw how well that worked with Morgan and Snyder. Even with Rogers it took until free agency to get him to re-sign.
If this team is as much like the ’94 team that we all think, they will continue filling their biggest weakness which is playmakers on offense.
They can get great value for DL in Rounds 2-3.
*Aldon Smith*
mscle – Unfortunately, Fleener will be gone before we pick at 30.
I think we’ll select DT Jerel Worthy if Fleener’s gone (if Worthy is still available at 30).
Worthy is 300+ pounds of beef! You can never have enough D-line depth.
If Fleener & Worthy are both gone, we should draft stud OG Kevin Zeitler from Wisconsin.
Congrats to Bubba for winning Masters!
Crabs, who is going to take Fleener before #30?
Depending on what happens in the next few weeks leading up to the draft I also like Zeitler. He will be gone by pick #45.
The Broncos and Browns could nab him before the 30th pick. Colt McCoy or whoever the Browns QB is needs a target if all the top WRs are taken. Manning + Fleener = Why the #&!$* did we pass on him when we had the chance to draft him?! That will be what the teams who pick 3-24 will be thinking.
MidWest, the Browns will not be taking Fleener at #4. As for the Broncos, they have signed multiple TE’s in Free Agency and I doubt that they will be looking to add another in Rd 1.
Drafting is more about 2-3 years down the track than this year, especially after the 1st round.
A receiver I think is the most likely pick with the 30th – whether it be Fleener or one of the other 2nd tier prospects (Wright, Hill, Sanu). 49ers need more talent and long term depth at receiver, so this is the logical choice. Moss is a 1 year experiment, Ginn is on a 1 year deal, MM is only on a 2 year contract, while Crabtree and Williams I think only have 2 more years on their contracts as well. Even if they take a receiver at 30, they might double dip with another later on.
While the defense is the strength of the team, there are some gaps in terms of depth, especially after this next season. Ignoring the strength of the team during the draft I believe is a mistake.
As far as DL goes, Sopoaga is 30 and off contract at the end of the year, I think RJF must be coming up to the end of his rookie contract, and J. Smith is 32-33 and off contract after 2013. Despite the young DLs we have (Tukuafu, Dobbs, Williams) I’d be surprised if a DL wasn’t taken relatively early – someone like Josh Chapman in the 2nd to be the back up NT and potentially take over from Sopoaga next year. The young guys we currently have are all undrafted FAs – you can’t rely on those guys to take the next step, you can only hope they do.
You can never have too many CBs, so that may be on the cards as a mid to late round pick, but doubt it will be an early pick. A safety will also likely be picked up somewhere in the mid to late rounds. Goldson will be playing on a 1 year contract and the only real backup safety we have is Spillman, who’s more of a special teams ace. Colin Jones isn’t a true safety – he’s special teams only. Aaron Henry may be a chance – he’s a CB/FS built in the same mould as Goldson, R. Smith and Culliver.
OLB is definitely a possibility as well. As with CBs, you can never have too many good pass rushers. Brooks and Aldon Smith are good starters, and Haralson is a good backup, but after that we have no depth (and Haralson isn’t much of a pass rusher). Haralson is also an expensive backup, and I’d be surprised if he’s on the roster in 2013. If a guy like Whitney Mercilus was available at 30 they should seriously consider it.
Selecting an OL in the 1st round isn’t great value unless a can’t miss superior lineman is available, such as DeCastro. Baalke knew what he was doing last year when he drafted Kilgore and Person. He knew there was a strong chance they may not keep Rachal or Snyder. There is a strong group of interior linemen in this years draft and I expect Baalke will take one in the mid to later rounds. Maybe someone like Kelvin Beachem – a small school OT/OG prospect that blocked for a successful running attack.
Despite getting Brandon Jacobs, I think a RB in round 1 or 2 is also a definite option. 49ers have or are meeting with David Wilson and Robert Turbin. Frank Gore may not last too many more seasons, and Kendall Hunter probably will never be a full time RB. If they don’t get a guy they like in rounds 1 or 2, I still think they’ll look at a RB in the mid to later rounds. Maybe a guy like Michael Smith who backed up Turbin, but is well built with good speed (and also hasn’t got much wear and tear).
Jack,
If I recall, the Browns draft at the 4th and 22nd spots. I believe that Fleener could be drafted with their second 1st round pick.
Fleener or McClellin.
Hightop, both of those picks would be great. I’m starting to think they go DL with the 30th pick. DPoe will most likely not be there, but a guy like KReyes would be a good fit playing both DT/DE and he is stout thus a good fit for the 3/4 defense. The 9ers have KReuland and NByham along with DW and VD. TE is not a need and picking CF would be a luxury pick. Same thing with Shea – with AldSmith and just signing ABrooks, they don’t need a pass rusher.
They are in a great position having a few options. It also would surprise me that they traded back a la N.E.
I hope this guy steps up and wins the starting RG spot…

Kilgore sounds like a good kid. Thanks for the link Jack, that was a good article.
ScooterMsG, nice insight. You have made a strong case on the draft as well as making good sense on Baalke’ line of thinking. I did not know the Org has met with the RB’ you mentioned but that could very well set the stage for one of them being drafted.
This draft is loaded with NFL quality receivers. You can pick up a good receiver in the later rounds. I personally like Fleener for the reasons of helping out third down and red zone problems. Going with a defensive pick at our first pick wouldnt be wrong for sure. A name I throw out is Joe Adams, receiver and the best return man in college. He has Ginn speed much better hands and can do the same on the return game as Ginn. I believe this man is one of the sleepers in the draft. A good third round pick. Maybe just maybe could get him in the fourth. He is rated as a high second and early third but no one is talking about this man. Mark my words he is going to make some team very happy they drafted him.
Agreed Undercover, J.Adams is a Eddie Royal type WR/R’tnr specialist who could be available in the 3rd rd due to his small stature.
Another WR who could be there in the 3rd is Dwight Jones who ran into some trouble in college but has the size and quality speed to help.
I sure hope these tweets were a joke. Actually I think DS might have sent the second one ; )
