NFL Draft Live Blog: Round 1

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. I’ll update this frequently from the 49ers media trailer.

4:05 This just in from Jay Glazer: “I’m hearing we have our first trade; Cleveland moving up from #4 to #3 w Minnesota. Giving up 3 picks to move into the 3rd spot.”

4:13 Jason LaCanfora on the trade: “Browns trade a 4th, 5th and 7th round pick to move up one spot to 3rd. Trent Richardson would seem to be the pick.”

4:27 More Glazer on the Vikings: “Minn didn’t want to go past 5th but are now thinking about trading down again.”

4:38 Adam Schefter says the Jaguars want to trade up for Blackmon: “One trade has enabled Jacksonville to now try to trade up for OSU WR Justin Blackmon. Jags pushing for deal.”

4:55 If the Jaguars draft Justin Blackmon, we’ll never hear from him again. He might become the quickest bust ever.

4:58 Evan Silva on Kendall Wright: “ESPN’s Bob Holtzman on Browns: ‘Expect them to turn their attention to WR at 22. Heckert has one guy in mind.’ (Guess: Kendall Wright.)”

5:01 Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain: “I heard a rumor Texans want TE Coby Fleener. Lots of mocks say so. I’ll be shocked if they take a TE in first round.”

5:05 Surprise: The Colts pick Andrew Luck No. 1

5:11 The Redskins pick Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.

5:16 The Browns pick Trent Richardson with the No. 3 pick. Now comes the interesting part.

5:19 The Vikings pick Matt Kalil with the No. 4 pick. Boring pick. They’ll end up regretting it because they should have picked a cornerback.

5:22 The Jaguars traded up with the Bucs to No. 5. They will draft Justin Blackmon, presumably. If so, that’s two bad draft picks in a row by two bad organizations.

5:25 And Jacksonville officially makes The Blackmon Mistake. An unconfirmed rumor says they already regret it.

5:30 Bad break for the Niners. It would have been nice for them had the Rams made The Blackmon Mistake. Now the Niners will have to contend with Cortland Finnegan and Morris Claiborne, most likely.

5:32 Scratch that – Dallas traded up to No. 6 and picked Morris Claiborne.

5:34 No matter how many times the analysts on NFL Network call Justin Blackmon a beast – he will not be one with NFL.

5:41 The Bucs draft Mark Barron with the No. 7 pick. The Dolphins can have Ryan Tannehill if they want him.

5:43 The Rams now own picks No. 33, 39 and 45.

5:46 The Dolphins draft Ryan Tannehill at pick No. 8.

5:47 The Cowboys will have a much better defense next years. Added CBs Carr and Claiborne.

5:49 The Panthers pick Luke Kuechly, and I owe a few people a nickel. I don’t think he’s worth a top-15 pick because he’s an inside linebacker. The Panthers disagree, but they’ll see things my way pretty soon. You’ll see. You’ll all see!

5:51 It blows my mind that Kuechly was a higher pick than Patrick Willis. He does not deserve the honor.

5:55 The Bills pick Stephon Gilmore with the No. 10 pick.

6:02 The Chiefs pick Dontari Poe with the No. 11 pick. All the busts are going early in this draft. Good news for the Niners.

6:05 The Eagles just traded up with the Seahawks for the 12th pick.

6:08 The Eagles draft DT Fletcher Cox No. 13. Good pick.

6:16 The Cardinals drafted Michael Floyd with the No. 13 pick. Two very large starting wide receivers for the Cardinals.

6:22 The Rams choose DT Michael Brockers with the No. 14 pick. They’re clearly going to draft receivers with some of their three second round picks.

6:33 The Seahawks draft DE Bruce Irvin with the No. 15 pick. Another reach. This draft has been Reach City so far.

6:40 My internet doesn’t work and the Seahawks drafted Bruce Irvin and the Jets drafted Quinton Coples. This draft has been Reach City. 6:44 I guess the Niners won’t be trading up to No. 17, because the Bengals just drafted Dre Kirkpatrick with that pick.

6:55 The Chargers draft Melvin Ingram and the Bears draft Shea McClellin and I’m frantically calling the webmaster. This is a draft disaster.

6:56 I think the site’s working again.

6:58 It’s working. Hallelujah! Has Coby Fleener been picked yet?

7:01 The Titans make The Kendall Wright Mistake at pick No. 20 and the Patriots trade up with the Bengals for pick No. 21 to pick DE Chandler Jones. David DeCastro is still on the board.

7:06 The Cleveland Browns draft QB Brandon Weeden with the No. 22 pick. I was expecting them to draft Fleener there, but I was assuming they were a savvy organization. Weeden is horrible draft pick. Wow.

7:10 The Lions draft offensive tackle Riley Reiff with the No. 23 pick. Will the Niners trade up here, or will the Steelers just take David DeCastro?

7:12 And the Steelers take DeCastro. Will the Broncos draft Fleener? They’re on the clock right now.

7:17 The Patriots traded up with the Broncos to draft Dont’a Hightower with pick No. 25. The Broncos will pick at No. 31. If the Texans pass on Fleener, he will probably drop to the Niners if they want him.

7:26 The Texans draft DE Whitney Mercilus with pick No. 26. The Niners should be able to choose between Coby Fleener, Rueben Randle and Stephen Hill at pick No. 30. Good for them.

7:31 The Bengals draft Kevin Zeitler with the No. 27 pick with Cordy Glenn still on the board. This round is shaping up perfectly for the Niners.

7:38 The Packers draft Nick Perry. If the Ravens pass on Fleener, the Niners have to draft him.

7:40 Forget the Ravens – the Vikings just traded up for the No. 29 pick. They’re going to pick Rueben Randle or Stephen Hill is my guess. I say they pick Hill.

7:42 The vikings draft Harrison Smith. Fleener’s there if the Niners want him. Let’s see if they do the right thing.

7:45 The 49ers draft wide receiver A.J. Jenkins from Illinois. 6-0 190. The 49ers just massively over-thought themselves. Terrible pick.

7:48 With this pick the Niners tell everyone they blame Kyle Williams for the NFC Championship loss. They actually chose to upgrade Williams’ roster spot with their first round pick. Unbelievable.

7:50 Jenkins averaged 13.3 yards per catch as a junior, 14.2 yards per catch as a senior. So despite his speed, he was not a big play receiver in college. The Niners got themselvesĀ another slot possession receiver. Perhaps Baalke is better at drafting defense.

7:55 The Bucs draft Doug Martin with pick No. 31.

  1. mg says:

And the 30th pick of the draft, the 49ers select Grant Cohn.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Just because I ran a 4.4 at my Pro Day.

      • Spitblood says:

yeah, but your lateral movement is suspect.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        It’s true. Plus I’m a long strider.

      • NickRow says:

So did Chris Owusu, but his stock didn’t go up :)

      • Ultimate Warrior says:

For a west coast offense, why do we keep drafting the wrong kind of WR. Have you looked at the best WRs in the league? Fitgerald, Megatron, AJ Green, all big WRs. Why do we keep ignoring this when Hill, Randle and Quick are staring us in the face. Balke keeps giving us small WRs. He has never shown an ability to draft WRs. We signed a bubch of 5’10-6 footers, why add another?

      • NickRow says:

        I feel your frustration

  2. Neal says:

Fill us in, going to watch the Devil Panthers 7th and decided game, then the Blues, not going to watch the draft over live sports, but am interested in who the Niners take.

  3. NickRow says:

All this waiting and the 49ers pick an O-lineman.

That was my nightmare from last night.

  4. Spitblood says:

Hey Jason – The Browns aren’t moving up to take a running back. They are moving up to take Tannehill away from Miami. Like I was wondering…. do the Vikes get paid? Why, yes. Yes they did.

    • Brotha tuna says:

3rd Overall for Tannehill? I doubt it, personally.

    • Gunner49 says:

      Wanna bet? It’s Richardson.

    • Spitblood says:

Why would any team use a top five pick on a running back – and not only a top five pick, but trade away a culmination of picks just to move up a couple of spots? If reports are true (which I hope they aren’t) Holmgren is making a huge mistake. I understand taking some pressure off Colt McCoy, and sticking with your boy, but the Browns had two picks in the first round to help McCoy with – they could have gone running back, receiver without trading up and giving away picks on the backend….. unless Holmgren isn’t big on McCoy.

Look at it this way – Who was going to trade with the Vikings for Trent Richardson? The Vikings were not drafting Richardson… not with AP and Toby. The only reason you move up there is to take Tannehill away from the Dolphins. That’s my take. We’ll see shortly.

      • Gunner49 says:

They made the trade so someone else wouldn’t trade with Minnesota and take Richardson ahead of them, like Tampa Bay.

      • Spitblood says:

Giving up that much for a running back with half the shelf life of other positions, when I don’t see anyone else wanting him enough to pay the Vikes… meaning Trent might have been there at 4… is questionable management of the war room in my ever so humble opinion.

      • Spitblood says:

Tampa Bay? There’s your potential threat? TB already has a huge back in Blount. That’s not exactly the change of pace you look for in a rb tandem.

      • Gunner49 says:

Blount is big but he’s not an every down back. They aren’t happy with him. He gets taken out on 3rd down cause he can’t catch and because he can’t be trusted to know his blocking assignments. He’s also a fumbler and borderline psychotic.

      • Spitblood says:

Good insight. Fair enough. It’s true Blount wasn’t even drafted and those are certainly some of the reasons. But riddle me this…. why not go with a running back later, like a Doug Martin, if Richardson isn’t there? It’s not like the Browns are so complete they can forget about finding late round gold. They aren’t the 49ers.

      • Gunner49 says:

I’m not trying to justify the move, just giving the rationale behind it.

      • Spitblood says:

        Yeah… I’ve just always liked Holmgren… until now… unless it’s not Trent.

      • Spitblood says:

        It’s Trent. I really think that’s a bad move.

  5. f49er says:

    And so….

The Draft officially begins with the Vikings (again?) at the #4 Spot

  6. Stan says:

Fancy place,Radio City….and MLB has its draft at Hotel 13. With paintings of giant eyed Orphans and Kittens.

  7. Stan says:

    Hey,Fleener made the dais..

  8. Ron in St. Pete says:

Why did the Browns give up picks to trade up one spot? Were they afraid that the Vikings were going to draft a running back? Seems to me that they want somebody OTHER than Richardson. Kalil perhaps? That would be a heck of a tackle combination pairing him with Joe Thomas.

  9. Stan says:

Huh,Stanford had 2/3 of the best white players in the country…

  10. Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers have their pick(s) dilemma and I have mine. Should I start with a NZ Sauv Blanc or Napa Chard. Or should I start with a Santa Barbara Pinot and then move to a WA State Merlot and finish the evening with a Napa Cab? Or should I make it simple and just drink Amstel Light? I guess it depends on what’s for dinner. Salmon, chicken or beef? Pizza?? Too many options!! LOL

    • Spitblood says:

I think you start with a Poppy Hills four iron to the noggin.

    • TIM says:

If Baalke picks someone you never heard of you might just go straight to the hard stuff . lol

    • Faithful says:

Not warm enough, at least where I’m at for whites. I’m a cab man so that would definitely be my choice.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Faithful, cabs are always great options. I had a large lunch so appetizers and wine may suffice tonight. Go 9ers!

      • Faithful says:

I’m fortunate enough to live in Calistoga so there are one or two choices of ok wines at the store. Once it warms up I’ll start breaking out the whites but this time of year is all cabs or blends. Personally my favorite wine to drink is a Meritage.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Insignia?

  11. Stan says:

Fleener just gave an interview where he says Stanford was a west coast offense, complicated with five options at the line of scrimmage, etc, etc,…well, If that’s west coast?..then Shaw needs to seek out remedial WCO updating, teaching. Just based on the end of the Fiesta Bowl for one…

  12. Ron in St. Pete says:

I think the 49ers will trade out of the first round for a 2013 #1.

    • f49er says:

      OR

Get multiple picks in rounds 2 or 3 where the Meat of the Draft is?

      • TIM says:

But we don’t need a bunch of picks, they don’t have room on the roster for many rookies. Trade up if anything, unless they can get a deal with a bad team for their next years #1 as part of the deal, then maybe.

      • f49er says:

        TIMMY

They would still get Bang for the Buck in those Rounds & be done. It’s not like they’re looking for Starters.

It’s about adding Quality Depth & those Rounds have lots of Talent.

      • TIM says:

        But f49:
If a team trades down they aquire additional picks. We have too many picks already. Why trade down and get even more players that will be cut? (unless we aquire a high pick for next year and can still get a few really good players this year. We don’t need quantity we need a few top quality players.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

Unless we trade 1 and say 4 and 5 to get more picks in rounds 2 and 3.

      • TIM says:

That would be ok Grumpy,as long as they thought their guys would still be on the board . But better to stay put or trade up in the 1st and then trade up again into the 2nd round twice etc.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

I’m not sensing a huge drop in value from 30 to 50. The only reason a trade is even possible for SF is if someone gets a woody for a particular player – like Holmgren reportedly has with Weeden.

      • f49er says:

        @TIM,

I think I just explain my point. Get 2 picks closer together, their own Pick in the 2nd with a mid-round 2nd pick so the 49ers can capitilize on the 2nd Round possibly.

      • f49er says:

        Grumpy,

        That’s exactly my point.

  13. Stan says:

So how long before the 30th pick? I heard the Raiders wont pick until Friday night at 95th.

  14. Hoferfan67 says:

Does Indy and Wash take the full 10 minutes?

    • Faithful says:

OK so the first two are done, the Browns have their pick in so the draft can officially start!

  15. Hov says:

Grant, I bet luke keuchly top 15

  16. Spitblood says:

    And we’re off……..

  17. Hoferfan67 says:

Does ALuck look a little like JedYork?

  18. NickRow says:

Jim Brown – although no scouting expert – doesn’t like Trent Richardson.

“The problem is that he’s ordinary. I think he’s ordinary.” What’s ordinary about Richardson? “The size, the speed, his moves,” he [Bornw] said.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8289f671/article/jim-brown-unimpressed-by-ordinary-trent-richardson?module=HP11_headline_stack

  19. ninermd says:

Im gonna guess the Redskins win the East this year. Giants dont make the playoffs. You watch.

    • NickRow says:

The Eagles could bounce back this year. Nonetheless, I really don’t care much for the NFC East.

      • ninermd says:

I dont either, but we could be playing them in the post season, Philly I think are done.

  20. Stan says:

The 5th best WR is some kid from Alabama..that’s who the 49ers take. I guess.

  21. Spitblood says:

RGIII seems like a pretty cool kid. Good to see.

  22. Faithful says:

Wow this is crazy with picks piling up, haven’t seen that before.

  23. ninermd says:

NOW that TR is a Brown. The real “guessing game” begins.

  24. Hoferfan67 says:

Do the 9ers trade up? Yes or no? My thoughts are yes!

  25. Grumpy Guy says:

Vikes should have traded with the Jags – they could have still gotten Kalil, and a bonus, while the Jags got Blackmon.

  26. Spitblood says:

Gabbert to Blackmon? That’s like Montana to Rice. Lol.

  27. ninermd says:

Minn needs to use a miracle card. Man I dont miss those days. Wheeew

  28. Faithful says:

Thats one wrong, they had me convinced they weren’t going to take him.

  29. Spitblood says:

Wow…. nice move again by the Rams….. wow.

    • Spitblood says:

The Rams’ GM ain’t stupid. He just leveraged the hell outta that first round pick.

  30. Faithful says:

wow look how far the cowgirls just moved up,

  31. ninermd says:

Jags got a bad man on the outside.

  32. EdgeOFChaos17 says:

Draft is Moving pretty quickly. lol

  33. Faithful says:

OMG memo to the NFL please have some mercy and for the love of christ stop giving the rams draft picks!!

  34. Faithful says:

Well that trade basically poos the bed on my mock.

  35. Faithful says:

that’s a huge jump for a corner, too far for the position?

    • ninermd says:

I dont think so, they need some help back there. Worst in the NFL with blown leads, and passing blown leads at that. I hope he is a bust though.

  36. Hoferfan67 says:

“Americas Team” is a made up phrase by the media. Did you hear the boos!!

  37. ninermd says:

Of course they have a reporter in Dallas, prob NY, and N.E and GB. I hate ESPN,

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Should be watching the better (NFL) network..

      • ninermd says:

Hmmm I hate Berman, I hate Irvin…. Decisions Decisions. And they both will probably have reporters in those same teams facility’. BUT. Your right the NFL Network is much better than ESPN. THX I would have suffered longer on ESPN. Didnt know they did the draft. Channel is changed. lol

  38. Faithful says:

    Who do the bucs take?

  39. ninermd says:

Tampa….Same problem as the Cowdungs. Good pick for them.

  40. NickRow says:

What’s up with all the steams moving up? Seems to me like these teams are reaching.

  41. ninermd says:

LMAO!!! Bucs fans screaming Dolphins suck. I want to hear some 9er fans screaming NY and GB and Oak SUCK. Wheew

  42. Hoferfan67 says:

RTannehill mistake at #8. Oh well…they will be dreamin’ for Marino for life…

  43. Hoferfan67 says:

    Where’s GC?

  44. Medic One says:

I am out here in Phoenix for two weeks training with Phoenix Fire. Great bunch of guys! That being said, today, I ran into Beanie Wells who predicted Az was drafting for defense in the first round. Then he followed that prediction up with an amazing illustration of how bad he was at simple math…The dealer asked for $25 to make his cash out an even $200. He stood there for about 4 minutes asking how much more to make it $200? Eventually he just pushed all his chips forward…I’d be willing to bet the kid didn’t show up for a single collegiate math course at Ohio State.

  45. fesnyc says:

there are some major reaches in this draft.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Wow some major reaches…what’s going on?? Everyone looking for a diamond in the rough!!

    • DS94everXev says:

      @fesnyc

How often have the teams drafting in/near the bottom 4 trade a bunch of picks to move up?

How often do they stand pat?

How often do they trade down?

Now, how often do the teams that commonly find themselves in/near the last 4 do each of those 3 possibilities?

I’m betting the least common one is the trade-up option.

      • fesnyc says:

to be fair, we wont really know who’s any good for months or years…and i’ve already disclaimed my ability to pick college talent (Mike Phipps is can’t miss!)…but i just have to think this many teams offering multiple picks to jump, plus the profiles of some athletes dont exactly reek of “cant-miss” (Tannehill, Kuechley, etc)…well, in many cases these will be bullets poorly spent. i’m generally a fan of trading up if you feel the guy is can’t miss, but some of this sounds like panic. I fear the Ram’s move to take the other side of this trade will do them well. hope not.

i still think we have to go Guard at #30 or earlier, but in Baalke I Trust.

  46. Hov says:

Told you grant luke kuechly top 15 thought he was slow grant?????

  47. ninermd says:

Goes to show you. Dont judge a book by its cover. Kuechly doesnt look tough, but seeing his highlights says different. Good pick for Car

  48. ? says:

What is up with all of these french braids in the NFL draft? I haven’t seen so many since our ten year olds slumber party back in ’92

  49. msclemons67 says:

I’m off the hook – I don’t have to say anything nice about Merlots.

Good thing too. I was having trouble thinking of anything.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MSC, Merlots are a good bargain and less expensive than Single Malt Scotch. LOL

      • ninermd says:

Even cheaper, AND BETTER is a bottle of Jack with some Bud Light to chase. ;-)

      • msclemons67 says:

But they have no character. They’re the Oakland of wines: There’s no there, there.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Oh, JD nights…been there! LOL

      • ninermd says:

Not a Wine or Import beer kinda of Guy Hoff. DOMESTICATED TO THE FULLEST. Although the Scotch sounds nice as well. Got some good Rum from Puerto Rico that you cant get here. Special occasions only. ;-)

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I like Puerto Rico. Stayed at the Conquistador. Had some excellent Rum there. Too much! LOL

  50. msclemons67 says:

And the Chiefs once again reach for a potential bust DL. Some things never change.

  51. Faithful says:

talk about reach especially from a GM that usually knows better

  52. Spitblood says:

The Chiefs just can’t get their D line right. LOL.

  53. ninermd says:

WTF kind of Hair “dont” is that? WOW

  54. Peter says:

@grant: wasn’t cam newton supposed to be a bust?

  55. Hoferfan67 says:

WOW…Poe looks lean in his suite!!! Good tailor!? LMAO!

  56. Grumpy Guy says:

Everyone loved Pioli a couple of years ago. Things have changed.

    • Spitblood says:

Same with Holmgren and AJ Smith. Maybe GM’s have a shorter shelf life than initially believed.

  57. msclemons67 says:

A lot more trades than I expected. Shefter says the Eagles gave up their 1st, 5th and 6th to move up three spots

  58. DS94everXev says:

How good does everybodies mock draft look so far? Minus the first 2 picks which was already known.

  59. Spitblood says:

According to Mayock…. everyone’s a HOFer right now. Sheez… tone it down, buddy.

  60. Hoferfan67 says:

We’ll know in 8 picks if the 9ers draft CF. They’ll have to move up and if they don’t, they aren’t drafting CF. I still say they don’t move and they grab RRandle – great pick (other than CF).

  61. Grumpy Guy says:

Yeah Spit, all we need is Crazy Undead Al to tell us how someone is a “great player”.

RIP, Al… watch your back, Satan.

  62. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Pick 13 coming up, we’re getting in Decastro territory.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Andrew, what time is it in India? You are a die hard 9er fan bud!

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Sorry I couldn’t respond earlier Hof, connection problems. It’s now 7:15 in India, we’re 9 1/2 hours ahead. As far as being a die hard 49er fan, it takes one to know one.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        12 1/2 West Coast time.

  63. msclemons67 says:

    Floyd to the Chiefs. Interesting.

KC Joyner: “Floyd had the lowest YPA and vertical YPA & second lowest stretch vertical YPA among the top 10 WR prospects”

  64. ninermd says:

Oh Damn!!! The Cards got another weapon. But with NO O-line he wont matter. Buahahahahaaaa

  65. Faithful says:

only my 4th correct pick of team at selection. these trades have slayed me. floyd to ari

  66. f49er says:

Floyd to Zona will only make our Division better,

I’m tired of hear from the E Coast Media saying the “Lowly NFC West”

    Not no more!

  67. ninermd says:

Blah Blah Blah….. Floyd will not do anything in the NFL. JJ Stokes anyone?

  68. ninermd says:

    STL takes Fleener. ;-)

  69. Spitblood says:

Did Floyd just suck on a helium balloon?

  70. Grumpy Guy says:

    Seattle: time for DeCastro?

  71. ninermd says:

Love the fact that NFC West teams are building to beat us and our style. Feels Great

  72. MontanaMan16 says:

Seahawks took a big trouble maker! haha

  73. Brotha Tuna says:

Floyd can play, but Az shoulda gone for a core player like DeCastro, Rief, or a Killa’ edge rusher. Miss.
Rams overplayed their hand. Blockers is good but they missed Claiborne.
Seachickens topped that with an epic reach for Irvin. Wow!

  74. Spitblood says:

Ohhhhhhhhhhh GGGGGGGGGGGrant? Where’s Fleener? Lol…… an entire career on the line…. right now.

  75. BigP says:

Kuechly @ #9, I guess he will go in the 1st round Grant.

  76. big niner says:

man the server is really sucking today!!! Love the bad picks in our division so far, lol

  77. big niner says:

what’s wrong with the server??????? It’s so bad!!! GRANT!!!

  78. AES* says:

NFL Network’ Michael Lombardi is reporting that the 49ers were persuing Bruce Irvin with their pick. Interesting that SEA pulls the trigger on him instead. Another P.Carroll swipe at Harbaugh? Hummmm

    • big niner says:

nooooooo, they can have him. It’s a poker match. they’ll say one thing, mean another and strike at the right time.

    • Spitblood says:

I saw that, too. Looks like maybe Baalke wanted to load up on fierce pass rushers. If it’s true, plan B is never good. That’s the kinda stuff that gets you R W McQuarters.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Not the 9ers guy or they would have moved up. All hyperbole!

  79. Hoferfan67 says:

Did they fix the server? Damn!!

  80. Hoferfan67 says:

Are you guys watching the live cam on

  81. Grumpy Guy says:

12 picks away. Some really good players still on the board.

  82. big niner says:

    I think so

  83. Grant Cohn says:

The site should be working again. Sorry about that. Things are a little wild today.

  84. Hoferfan67 says:

Are the 9ers going with RRandle or defense?

  85. Hoferfan67 says:

Damn now the 9ers server is acting up!

  86. Hoferfan67 says:

    Hey GC,

Please say hello to E. Branch for me. MM too. Thanks!

  87. ninermd says:

If Fleener was on the 9ers radar from the start, this is where and when they need to trade up. Im still saying he’s going to Denver and were getting a Wis Badger

  88. big niner says:

I think we’re going to get our guy!!!! so many Guards, Wr’s and fleener left!!

  89. Hoferfan67 says:

Watch the 9ers and see if they get on the phone to trade. SF49ers.com – they have a live cam going…

  90. rebelscum74 says:

Hey Grant, the Browns just took the old quarterback that I believe you said earlier could be a big bust, Which I agree, Don’t you think they should have gone WR or OL, I do not understand the Browns strategy? Do you?

  91. Jack Hammer says:

Weeden….LMAO!!! Our QB is younger than that guy. He will be 30 before he even figures anything out. What a wasted pick…

  92. Spitblood says:

    Wow…. Holmgren is smoking crack.

  93. AES* says:

Andrew; Do you with DeCastro or Fleener if their both available?

  94. undercenter says:

Decastro, Konz, Hill, Randle, Fleener still there.

  95. Jack Hammer says:

What did NE give Denver to move up?

  96. Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers are not on the phone. DeCAstro to Pitt. UUUgggg!

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

I’m thinking Flenner, Hill or Randle, one of them will definitely be there.

  97. Stan says:

C’mon.Fleener isnt exactly a lead you to a Super Bowl pick. I doubt the niners are filled with anxiety on that pick.
Hey another Stanford guy picked. Daveeed De Cahstro.. or David DeCastro in English.

  98. Hoferfan67 says:

GC, the 9ers aren’t moving. Do you think it is still CF or RRandle??

  99. AES* says:

    Andrew; Nevermind! hahaha

  100. big niner says:

Big ben is doing flips right now.

  101. Stan says:

    Oh well..calling it a day…seeya.

  102. Hoferfan67 says:

N.E. going all defense with that great 31st ranked D from 2011. LOL

  103. adam says:

    Texans take fleener?

  104. big niner says:

NE stacked up to pick studs period!! they had so many pick to deal, they could do this.

  105. Hoferfan67 says:

GC, is the media trailer full? Who’s there? MB, MM, CI, EB, Janie M, etc. How about LC and TMurakami? RRatto?

  106. Jack Hammer says:

LMAO!!!! Anyone else just catch that wardrobe malfunction on NFL network?

  107. Mood Indigo says:

Defense dominating. Martin is going to the second round, maybe Fleener, too.

  108. Spitblood says:

    Grant – Mexican fisherman isn’t a bad occupation….

  109. big niner says:

so we’re getting closer hmmmm, what to do?

  110. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

If Glenn or Zeitler are there my guess is that they go in that direction. A receiver will be there at 2.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Naw, I’d be shocked that they draft a guard that high. But no absolutes…there goes Zeitler.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Glenn is dropping. If Flenner hasn’t gone by now his lack of draft value seems to be showing. If Coach wants him that’s good enough for me.

  111. Hoferfan67 says:

What happen to the 9ers moving up? Ain’t gonna happen!! LOL

  112. steelematic says:

The niners r gonna get janoris jenkins…

  113. ninermd says:

    Who is N.O picking? Buahahahahaa

  114. big niner says:

sitlitilo what ever is left now at guard

  115. big niner says:

The ravens will take Fleener now imo

    • rebelscum74 says:

I agree about the ravens taking Fleener, Their quarterback will be better because of it, What are the packers thinking?

    • MontanaMan16 says:

He wouldn’t do that to his brother….would he? lol

  116. ninermd says:

There goes our Badger. Cinn knew it. Harbaugh east picking Fleener??? Damn I wanted Zeitler

  117. BigP says:

CF still available, #30 would be a good spot without trading up.

  118. MontanaMan16 says:

Packers need Defense! Whats the Ravens need?

  119. Hoferfan67 says:

I’m sure it is CF or RRandle.

  120. AES* says:

Fleener to GB Packers? Another weapon for A.Rodgers?
    Nooooooo!

  121. steelematic says:

Moss manningham crabtree ky williams ted ginn??? We dont need a WR at 30. Except for moss we are young at the positiin. and we have talent. I dont think randall or hill is better than moss mann or crab. Just my opinion

  122. Spitblood says:

    AAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN JJJJJJJJJJJJJEEEEEEEEEFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  123. Hoferfan67 says:

    Baltimore grabs Glenn?

  124. Hoferfan67 says:

I still say RRandle but CF is awesome as well! Go 9ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  125. Jack Hammer says:

    Fleener to Vikings?

  126. ninermd says:

Minn moves up. They want what we wanted

  127. MontanaMan16 says:

    Minnesota jumped up!!!! Fleener?????

  128. Mood Indigo says:

Vikings will probably go with offense at this draft position. Fleener?

  129. Hoferfan67 says:

JH has been on the edge of his seat the last 3 picks on the 9er live cam. Man I like that dude!!!!!!

  130. MontanaMan16 says:

    We were on the phone.

  131. msclemons67 says:

Now the 49ers choose between Fleener and Hill or do something especially Baalke-esque.

  132. BG says:

    CF to niners?

  133. Mood Indigo says:

    OK. Grant’s moment of truth.

  134. Spitblood says:

Randle, Fleener and Jeffrey are THERE!!!!

  135. BigP says:

Here we go, many good options on the board!

  136. BG says:

CF – Top 20 eh Grant?

  137. MontanaMan16 says:

I like Smith but that was unexpected! Here we go!

  138. ninermd says:

    Heres your shot Grant. Fleener???

    • BigP says:

As long as they didn’t trade a bunch of picks to move up to get him, he is good value at #30.

  139. Jack Hammer says:

    AJ Freakin Jenkins…

  140. Spitblood says:

The first round went so fast, the NFL is now playing a lot of commercials to catch up to promises. One pick, twenty commercials. It’s like torture for Grant. Pure torture.

  141. big niner says:

FLEENER!!! PALEEEZZ I saw them pass on desean jackson and I couldn’t take it again. no chilo please!!

  142. BG says:

    I’ll take Jenkins

  143. Grumpy Guy says:

    Jenkins? Seriously?

  144. AES* says:

    J. Jenkins?

  145. Allan Basso says:

We have quite a few options: Glenn, Fleener, Randle.
Hopefully we can trade back and get another pick while still getting one of those guys.

The Vikings could have waited and traded with us instead of Baltimore.

  146. NickRow says:

    WTF?

    • NickRow says:

Talk about a reach. Jenkins would have been available later. They should have traded back to the middle of the 2nd round if they wanted this guy.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Yep. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jenkins and think he will be a good WR – as I’ve mentioned on here before I see him as the closest thing to Brandon Lloyd or Mike Wallace in this year’s draft – but he would easily have lasted to the mid 2nd round.

      • msclemons67 says:

I wouldn’t be too quick to call reach. Last year Aldon was projected to go around 20, all the draftniks yelled “reach!” and it turned out the Texans were targeting Aldon at 11.

We may find out the Colts were set on Jenkins a few weeks from now.

  147. dangle says:

yet again, in the first round Trent has left me confused

  148. big niner says:

    What??????????

  149. BG says:

    No CF Grant? ehehehehehe

  150. Hoferfan67 says:

No Fleener!! Wow – JH doesn’t draft his former Stanford players. Where is the height for the RZ?

    • BigP says:

That says a lot about Fleener in my opinion.

      • Grant Cohn says:

It says more about Baalke. He can’t draft pass catchers. This is a horrendous pick.

      • rebelscum74 says:

I agree 100 percent Big P!!!! Surprised not shocked, he is only 6feet and not a big blocker!!! He is fast!!!!

      • BigP says:

        Grant,
I’m sure Harbaugh gave Baalke plenty of input about Fleener. I am surprised with the pick though.

      • Spitblood says:

Wow… wow…. wow. Grant…. you saying you know more than Baalke?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

GC, what are the beat writers saying? Please give us some insight!

      • msclemons67 says:

Baalke absolutely hates the Bay Area schools. Some kids from Stanford must have mugged him.

      • Aaron says:

cohn you so obviously have no idea what you’re talking about… You were saying we’d have to trade up to get fleener that he’s the best pass catcher in the draft and absolutely no one that matters in the nfl agreed with you tonight so just shut up..

    • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer, can you please pass me that bottle of wine. I need to get drunk now ; )

  151. Alexito says:

    WTF??? WHO??

Well, can’t be too upset, remember how we felt with Aldon Smith?

  152. matt49erfan831 says:

Who the hell is AJ Jenkins?

    • Manilaboy says:

      A. J Jenkins will be a great player than crabtree ! Time is almost running out for Kyle william with the niners.. The 49ers made a good pick. No way, was the niners going to pick another TE, with Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker they already have to very good tandem. I won’t be surprise they get another WR or G in the 2nd or 3rd round. The 49er defense is already set for the next 6 years.

    • Busterman says:

      Matt,

      A. J Jenkins is the one that the 49ers were longing for, a receiver thats dangerous, with a break away speed, and has very good hands and has alot of upside than Crabtree.. His going to make this offense very explosive, he understand the game and he knows where his at in football field.

    • Letterman says:

I agree, Jenkins has the all the skills to mature into a starter. He has above average vertical threat. And this kid is going tobe fun to watch in a 49ers uniform, for quite sometime.

Before draft day, i didn’t think that the niners would draft TE C. Fleener. They already have 4 TE”S in their stable V. Davis, D. Walker, N, Byham and konrad Reuland.

  153. AES* says:

And so ends the Fleener fetish…

  154. BG says:

does it mean the end of Williams?

  155. ninermd says:

    A speed guy. hmm?

  156. Spitblood says:

ahhhhhhhhhhh…………………………. too bad. No Fleener……… Mexican Fishing for you….

I just heard Rich Eisen drop Harbaalke. I was the one who coined that phrase, BTW.

  157. adam says:

    Ok. Didn’t see that coming.

  158. MontanaMan16 says:

There smiling in the war room!

  159. Hoferfan67 says:

Are the 9ers trying to find the smallest WRs in the league?? Will RM even last the year? I wanted CF or RRandle. TBD LOL

  160. undercenter says:

Baalke did the unexpected and that was what I expected. Jenkins welcome aboard. Cant believe we didnt go after Fleener tho.

  161. For the Love of the Team says:

Could we not have traded back for Jenkins?

  162. Allan says:

    What? Again, what?
Nothing against the player but couldn’t we trade back for anything and still get him?

And what’s the deal with the Bucs logo during our pick?

  163. BG says:

    In Trent we trust ..

  164. Spitblood says:

I kinda think this is like R W McQuarters. The 49ers wanted and targeted that pass rusher Seattle grabbed, and now we get Jenkins. I’m….. not pumped.

  165. AES* says:

I don’t remember A.J. Jenkins name ever being mentioned here. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Baalke/Harbaugh may have a few tricks up their sleeve.

  166. Bob Miller says:

    So where does Fleener go?

  167. ribico says:

Was Jenkins on anybody’s mock? Was he on *anybody’s* 1st round list?

Oh well,s in Harbaugh/Balke we trust, right?

    Maybe Fleener’s available in the 2nd ;)

  168. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

Baalke must be a great poker player, you can’t get a read on the guy. Jenkins, with the very little analysis I’ve read, is that quick twitch receiver the 9ers are looking for. Williams may be history.

  169. shawnrhod says:

Was not expecting that… I trust the guys though.

Only thing is could we have gotten him in 2nd? If not and they like him then I trust Harbs and crew

  170. Hoferfan67 says:

    NYG grabs CF?

  171. Prime Time says:

Hey Grant, up your ass with the Fleener pick! Wrong again just like every other hater! Do your homework before you pop off clown.

    • Brotha tuna says:

Easy dude. Refill your glass, have a couple tokes, chill a bit. Nobody was going to predict this draft. I was thinking Brian Quick or Silatolu, how ’bout you? Did you predict Jenkins? C’mon, man. : >)
Lotsa good playahs left for maƱana & Saturday.

    • rocket says:

Wow easy Prime. Nobody got this pick right and it’s a head scratcher.

  172. steelematic says:

Hof… the height is Moss and Davis. Now whoever the qb is has to get their head out of their butt n give akers a break. we got the players, we need a man to get them the ball

  173. big niner says:

ok, my 3rd base anology has come through, you make it to 3rd base with a chick, and the parents come home!!! blue ballz

  174. Brotha tuna says:

Obviously, not in my sights but on my radar screen. Of the WRs that PFW considered suited to “X”, they had Jenkins 3rd behind Randle and Quick. He’s got quick twitch suddenness and upside. Based on Trent’s track record, I’m not worried. They spent #30 on this guy, I bet he can play.

  175. MontanaMan16 says:

Martin can block on third down, unlike Blount!

  176. Jallen says:

Lets go back to this huge question….why not trade back?????????? makes no sense at all with so much talent available and at a need position in G too.

  177. BigP says:

THe muscled hamster is off the board.

  178. fesnyc says:

Baalke must have wanted him, because he sounds like he might have been available a bit later. Until we can judge this draft, i have to agree with anything Baalke/Harbaugh want to do, because the last 2 drafts were pretty damn good.

Hope we find a guard…it just takes one guy underperforming and we wont be able to run or throw – not this team, anyway.

  179. Andrew from Rishikesh says:

    Here’s an overview from NFL Combine;

Jenkins was a two-year starter at Illinois (while also starting four games over his first two years) for the now-departed Ron Zook and has the speed to take the top off of defenses in the NFL. He separates well when running with defenders and is good in securing the catch. He has shown a good amount of production and has fifth-round value at the next level if he can continue to get open the way he did in the Big Ten.

    • big niner says:

      5th rd wow…

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

        Here’s another analysis from SI;

Biography: Two-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior after posting career-best numbers of 90 receptions/1276 yards/8 TDs. Junior totals included 56/746/7.

Positives: Adequately sized wideout with a polished game. Smooth releasing off the line into pass routes, displays good quickness and the ability to get separation from defenders. Extends his hands to make the reception away from his frame and effectively adjusts to errant throws. Sells routes, looks the ball into his hands and possesses both soft and strong hands. Good eye/hand coordination. Comes back to the ball out of breaks and uses his frame to shield away defenders. Consistently finds the open space on the field. Holds onto the ball after taking big hits.

Negatives: Lacks a second gear and does not play to his 40 time. Average skill running after the catch.

Analysis: Jenkins displayed a lot of improvement in his game the past two seasons and is a natural pass catcher with the skills necessary to be a productive third wideout at the next level.

        Projection: 2-3

      • DS94everXev says:

The ESPN guys had him projected as early 2nd round big niner.

  180. 23jordan says:

Who the hell is going to get all these receivers the football?? lol.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

      Not JJ! lol

    • Spitblood says:

No kidding. Alex Smith couldn’t find his second read if it was pinned to his forehead.

      • Brotha tuna says:

and the Vikes wanted Tannehill, right? ‘geneous’
Every time you agree with Jordo, think what it does to your rep…………

      • 23jordan says:

Tuna, another Smither that is blinded by the nice guy Alex. You will soon see, like every other Smither, that wide receiver has never been our problem. It was the 1st round overall pick from 2005 after all. You Smithers just don’t get it and never will.
Smith can’t throw deep well enough to reach 4.37 speed. We got a new QB coming Spit!

      • DS94everXev says:

If his first got open all the time, he wouldn’t need to spit.

      • 23jordan says:

        Spit,

Smith doesn’t do 2nd reads. He’s better at looking for missing people than he is open receivers!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

He has not rep here. It’s all nonsense.

    • MidWestNiner says:

The same guy who threw that great pass to Vernon Davis against the Saints in the playoffs.

    • Prime Time says:

      Your hero Alex dumb ass!

  181. Izzball says:

Grant is mad because he didn’t see this coming therefore it must be a terrible pick.

    • tkamb says:

Yeah he had Stephen Hill in the top 10, and he fell out of the first. Had Fleener as the best pass catcher in the draft, fell out of the first.

  182. gruntfo says:

jenkins ton of catches good kid ,fast, great routs

  183. tkamb says:

I had 3-4 wrs ahead of him but if Harbaugh/Baalke thinks Jenkins is the best fit I trust them. Hopefully the other Jenkins continues to fall and we can get him in the 2nd.

  184. Razoreater says:

Very disappointing pick. Harbaugh passes on Fleener? Hmmmm. Interesting. Hope the Giants do not get him. I think Baalke was targeting Irvin. Bet he thought he’d be there but old Pete pulled a fast one.

    • DS94everXev says:

      “Very disappointing pick.”
Kinda like Aldon Smith was last year?

“You think you know. But you don’t. And you never will.”

      • Razoreater says:

I do not need you to tell me what I will think or what I know. You do not know me and I do not profess to know anything. I feel disappointed and until I see Mr. Jenkins perform like Aldon Smith nothing you say or anyone else says will change that feeling. I trust Baalke but I also like Mr. Reagan want to verify.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

@DS anything this regime does is ok with me. In the analysis I read they mentioned that he’s a polished receiver. Maybe that first half that Victor Cruz had in the Championship game left more of an impression on Harbaugh and Baalke than Graham did with the Saints, just speculating.

      • AES* says:

        Hear, hear, DS.

      • DS94everXev says:

I didn’t say anything except the truth razor. I can accept it. I don’t know anything about the draft/office of the Niners. But, I at least know that, and am not going to start my relationship with our new #1 pick by hating the guy.

Where have we seen that before? Hmmm. Maybe AS. Nope. I won’t do it. I said all this time I will support any player we get, and I unlike some welcher here, will. If you want to start your relationship with our guy by needing him to prove himself to me.

He is a Niner. I default to liking him. You have to do something bad for me to change my opinion. Jenkins has done nothing bad.

P.S. Razor – That favorite quote of mine was said by a HC who lead his team in the NFC from a horrible first year to 10 wins with defense. Then went to the opposite conference, and did the same thing. This time with great offense. If he says that you don’t know, you don’t. Neither do I/Grant/other bloggers/media.

      • Razoreater says:

Disappointment never equates to hate. I appreciate your wisdom but do not bill me because I never made an appointment. I like Mr. Jenkins. I did not like him in the 1st Round. His job is clear. Make me love you, because baby “like” just ain’t gonna cut the mustard.

      • DS94everXev says:

To me, you become a Niner, you have my complete faith. You don’t need to prove anything to me. You can only lose it. But if we get you (especially drafted) I’m in your corner as long as I think you are doing all you can. Doesn’t mean I won’t look to upgrade or evaluate you.

  185. Ukiah Tony says:

Wasn’t Jerry Rice an unknown 1st round pick when the 49ers picked him too?… Just saying, no one can bash the 49ers front office until after the next two seasons about this pick… Give it time…

  186. DS94everXev says:

Anybody else notice what Berman said?

If the Niners got anything from the outside, we win the Title game.

Are the odds of letting MC go higher, or the same now?

If anything, I like the pick if not for any other reason than for those who are too Fleener crazy to have the Niners pass him up. His old coach had his chance to get him. And he choose not to.

Considering how fast this guy is, I guess we know that JH does not doubt AS arm.

    • big niner says:

      where’s the timing though?

      • DS94everXev says:

        @big niner

I really don’t care. Just as long as the guy can get himself open. Speed, push off (as long as it isn’t called, anything else) to get open. Something which many fans here do not have as a requirement of our WR’s.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Harbaugh says he’s too biased on his Stanford players! I trust the pick, just surprised with all the trades going on that we couldn’t trade back.

    • grimey9er says:

odds are zero. Crabtree’s stayin. Get over it.

Ballerz gonna ball, haterz gonna hate.

      • DS94everXev says:

Maybe MC thinks he is playing basketball. All the drops he had in the games we needed him. The ball bounced a lot after it hit his hands. Like he was playing basketball.

      • grimey9er says:

        Your selective memory is hilarious.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Selective memory?????

I gave MC the benefit of the doubt when he held out at the time. What great catches did he make in the playoffs? VD had a much worse regular season than MC. But, he showed up when it mattered. So, therefore, VD is better. Playoff game success is what you need to have.

Berman said it immediately. If we got production form outside (WR’s), even just a smidge, we win that game. Ray Ratto wrote it. If you are dreaming of getting a player, dream of getting LF, not PM. And what position does LF play? WR. If MC produced like a WR should, we wouldn’t need to dream ff getting LF. We would have won a 6th Super Bowl.

Do you have selective memory? Because it seems you do. Not to mention short term memory loss. Berman said it like an hour ago.

  187. Spitblood says:

    Goodbye, Kyle Williams.

  188. DB says:

I am a bit worried about Baalke’s WR draft history: Kyle Williams, Ronald Johnson…

    • Great Odin's Raven says:

KW and RJ were both late round picks though. If a 6th or 7th doesn’t work out, it’s not completely unexpected. Plus, KW actually looked good in his limited playing time.

  189. domingo says:

After Trent Baalkes performance in the last two drafts I have issued him a credit card for this draft. I wont critize his picks till we see the actual results next fall.

That being said, Jenkins is a guy I liked a lot. Reminds me of Issac Bruce when the Rams took him in the second round years ago. Very talented but I am suprised. I guess we know Baalkes super-secret mystery player is now. Hope for the best.

  190. DS94everXev says:

Don’t worry Fleener fans. Maybe the Niners trade picks 2-7 to move up to get him tomorrow.

I said I wanted at least 2 WR’s. That is one. Although I am scared of the first round WR. But I put my trust in TB when he was hired over Lombardi by Jed, and he got us JH. Then he got us Aldon Smith. So, who are we to doubt him?

The answer from last years JH’ question seems appropriate here…
    NOOOOBODY!

Maybe the writer of the blog will take this lesson as well. Don’t get so enamored by one player that you ignore every other option.

    • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

They don’t have enough ammunition to move up in top tier of the second.

      • undercenter says:

I liked Fleener but if his own coach cant make a good enough pitch for him? Kind of reminds me of Carrol -Mays. Cant see moving up to get him.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew/undercenter

I have no qualms with Fleener. Or with any of these guys. Unless they are not a Niner. Then I do. lol

I just got tired of all the Fleener talk/predictions of us with him. FDM made a nice point the other day. If Fleener is as good as so many here think he is, he wouldn’t last anywhere near as long to #30.

      • Razoreater says:

        Agreed.

      • Andrew from Rishikesh says:

@DS, I was all in on Flenner but I read this mock that said, why draft a second string tight end in the first round and it changed me. Jenkins is an insurance policy if Moss spits the bit (little horse-racing jargon, means to quit). I have ultimate faith in the guys running the show. This team is built for right now, Super Bowl winner. No grooming or waiting for someone to find their ceiling. This guy looks good to go,

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Andrew

I was/am in the camp of getting somebody who can force you to 2-team somebody not named VD on our team. That is what I wanted out of this draft.

I was never for, and certinaly not agaisnt drafting anybody. And I agree with your statement about this team is ready to win now. No drafting a guy to have him sit for 3 years or something. If our team plays like they did last year and forces teams to have to 2 team VD and Jenkins (or player x, I don’t much care, or in my wishes 3 WR’s),we will win 2 of the next 3 Super Bowls barring major injury. We are so much better than everybody else. We have a complete team. No other team is remotely as complete as ours.

  191. DirkaMan says:

Anyone actually looked at the film? This guy has sure hands, is stupid fast, and in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O931W3wadpY
takes a mad hit and holds on.

I was shocked at the pick, but I love the film. I’m sold.

I can just see him running through defenses on a slant route.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

      Wow! I like him.

    • grimey9er says:

Academic all big ten too. Smart football player. good pick. I guess Baalke new his guy was gonna be there after all.

    • Adam says:

The kid has good hands. He won’t be THAT open in the NFL though.

My only thing is I wish we could get a guy that could break tackles. I miss the JR/JT combo.

So this kid has to push a vet off the team. Who is it going to be? Does Jenkins have any special teams experience? If not, Ginn is safe. So it has to be Kyle Williams? IF he can beat him out in camp that is.

    • Josh says:

A few good catches and a bunch of blown coverage…..great video of how not to play in the defensive backfield…..I thought we were looking at a wr…..

  192. big niner says:

what time is rd 2 tomorrow?

  193. Jack Hammer says:

Eveyone’s favorite, Greg Cosell, says he really likes the 49ers pick of Jenkins. Says “he is good on film, with nice combo of traits. Has a chance to be a quality starting WR.”

  194. Woody says:

This will not go down as a steal. Just a ho-hum pick. Oh well, it is what it is.

  195. steelematic says:

Jordo.. Lol. we got players. Smith will have no excuses in 2012. Ds… Maybe its kaps arm harbaugh doesnt doubt??

  196. Prime Time says:

Grant wrong again about Fleener, your a joke!

    • big niner says:

prime why are attacking him so much? so he was wrong as were so many of us….what’s your deal?

      • BigP says:

Yeah, it is supposed to be fun.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers can trade up and grab CF tomorrow. Why so bitter?

      • Spitblood says:

Yeah, but it’s fun giving Grant grief. Good grief, Grant… what were you thinking? Were the blog hits worth it?

        See? That’s fun.

      • Prime Time says:

Because he is clueless, the Niners were never gonna take a TE in the 1st round when they have three capable ones already on the roster. Insted he wrote about it for day’s, he has no clue when it comes to football let alone the 49ers.
He is not qualified for the job, its clear in his writings and opinions, his Dad got him the job, the only reason he is on here, not trying to be a prick, just stating the facts.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @prime

The chances of any of us being right about this stuff is minimal. It’s fine that Grant was wrong. But he needs to understand that he is going to be wrong a lot more than he is going to be right. And he needs to cool it with the criticisms when he is wrong. If not, he is going to be a very mad writer.

As Bill Parcells says. There is a reason why coaches coach. Players play. Writers write, and fans watch.

    • Adam says:

Why so hostile? I don’t think anyone saw this coming. (Which, by-the-way, makes it damned interesting.)

Not a big deal and Big P is right, this should be FUN.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

Grant seems quite angry with the pick. Not happy. Since we don’t know how Jenkins is actually going to play here, why be angry with the pick?

Be happy. He is here. He is a Niner. He is now in the family. I don’t welcome a family member in the manner Grant did.

Not saying Prime was nice to Grant. But Grant’s writing after the Title game loss has been very harsh of some players (guess who) and not others. Grant said the Niners would win the title game. They didn’t, and he got pissed more than a reporter should. Same thing here. Grant has promoted Fleener as “the guy”. And refused to look at any other options. Then when the Niners don’t go that direction, Grant wrote something that I’d expect a blogger to write. Not a reporter.

  197. big niner says:

Jed York said not to be suprised if the pick wasn’t a sexy one, meaning maybe we don’t know him but he fits our system!

  198. Islandguyj49ers says:

Good news is I watched the highlights and he catches a lot of high over thrown balls. And dives to catch th elow thrown ones too.

  199. Adam707 says:

In Baalke I trust. They clearly saw more in Jenkins than both Hill and Fleener. Just because no one saw this pick doesn’t mean its a bad one. No one predicted us to pick Aldon last year and that turned out very well. Chin up GC.

  200. undercenter says:

    • undercenter says:

      Above post was for Jenkins

    • msclemons67 says:

“Extends his hands to make the reception away from his frame and effectively adjusts to errant throws.”

Ok, now I’m sold. Great pick Baalke.

  201. Dan says:

Hey for everybody clammoring for Mike Wallace…. You just got him. This kid can play. Check him out.

    • Spitblood says:

Exactly… he’s like a Hybrid between Mike Wallace and Hakeem Nicks…. long arms and fast. Catches everything with his hands. Great Harbaalke find!

    • DS94everXev says:

      You mean Jenkins, right Dan?

Because if we got Wallace right now, I am in high heaven.

  202. Spitblood says:

I’ll tell you what…… Baalke just found another Hakeem Nicks. This kid Jenkins has long arms, catches everything and he’s fast. Doesn’t matter what the so called experts in media say. The Pros are in War Rooms – not in the media, and Baalke has a great track record. And Harbaugh knows receivers. This kids looks good on YouTube.

  203. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

You’re a reporter. Not a blogger. You’re 7:48 post does not reflect a reporters elite level of writing. But that of a blogger. I think it says something a lot more about MC. And what the team thinks of him. Why draft another WR in round 1 if MC is all that?

  204. michaeld says:

Ripping a player you probably never watched in college before he’s played a down in the NFL. I know it hurts that they didn’t follow your mock, but don’t be that guy Grant.

  205. Dennis says:

I like Baalke picking over anyone on this blog, including Grant. His job depends on it. Ours does not.

  206. big niner says:

Well it looks like he uses his big hands to catch the ball away from his body. I didn’t see break away speed though.

  207. 23jordan says:

Speed kills, and we have quite a bit of it at the receiver position, not to mention Vernon. Now, time to find that arm to sling it to them!!!

    • BigP says:

You can’t say they didn’t surround him with weapons, that’s for sure.

      • 23jordan says:

        Big P,

Of course they will say the receivers are running too fast now. The deep ball is really a problem Smith has. Were talking about 50-60 yards, not 6.

    • Spitblood says:

I really believe that’s JJ next year, then Kaep and JJ in 2013 in a weird qb battle. Bye, bye Smith.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Just proves that JH and TB realize that the Championship game needed WRs. Now they are focused on that area of need.

      • 23jordan says:

        Alexfan11,

They didn’t know the team needed wideouts before the playoffs started. Why did we know and they didn’t. At least they know now. Now about that QB………….

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Mr Negative,

You are notorious for being wrong here. Nothing has changed with you last couple of comments. JH and TB know that a WR with separation similar to VD can be a weapon for AS. It will be a great year with AS at the helm. Big numbers and a big year.

      • Spitblood says:

Hofer – you’re notorious for being a company man. You want to attack? Get ready to be attacked. What have you ever contributed to this blog? Humor? I haven’t seen it? Insight? Nope. What about taking a unique position and defending it? No again. All you do it defend the team, and it’s weak. It’s pu$$y.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

That comment didn’t address you so mind your business.

      • Manilaboy says:

Spit, don’t you get tired, insulting others? I’m surprise the others here don’t get offended with your sarcasm remarks and your hurtful words.

Life is too short friend, to create enemies.

  208. leonard says:

Terrible pick? {A.J. Jenkins} how do know so soon? Wonder what you said last year about A. Smith & C. Culliver.

  209. LSX says:

Again with the yards per catch. Why is that the only detail you focus on?

    In Harbaugh/Baalke I trust.

    • DS94everXev says:

It gives the “experts” something to talk about. JR didn’t have the best average either. How did that effect anything LSX?

      • Grant Cohn says:

        Rice had a monster average

      • 23jordan says:

BS never has a clue Grant. He didn’t even bother to look at Rice’s college average per catch. Bs, wrong again!!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Rice had his best year as a senior and averaged 16.4 yards. That isn’t much of a difference. I also wanted Fleener big time, but it may still work out. He has a big 40 time, 4.39 like you covet.

      • DS94everXev says:

He had some great average/catch years. But for much of his time, he was not exceptional. JR had an average of 14.8 yards/catch. Issac Bruce had an average of 14.9 yards/catch. Exceptional is over 200 TD’s. Nobody is even close. Especially at the time JR played.

Also, he got more of his average off his YAC than any other WR. So, he did more work than most others.

And little boy welcher. So stupid, he calls me the name which describes himself better than any other.

  210. Daniners says:

Actually, he is not a slot receiver and they will play him opposite Crabtree after moss is gone. He would have gone early half of 2nd, what the first round should tell you is 3 things: Fleener and Hill were horribly overrated and overhyped. Hill had basically zero college production and Fleener had relatively little for a TE with best QB prospect since Elway. Both have very limited quickness out of cuts, straight line speed. If you cant separate in NFL you are average at best. Jenkins has been compared with Lloyd. Same height, weight speed and better college production. I trust Baalke over you any day and I will take a more mature Lloyd any day. In Baalke I trust.

    • Adam says:

Yeah but then Jenkins must have been severely underrated. NFL Net has him as a 5th rounder.

Sooo… we either have the best scouts in the league or this was the bonehead move of the year.

Based on past performance I’d say we’re OK. On the other hand, Ronald Johnson didn’t make it through camp last year.

Dunno. We’ll have to see. I remember talk last year about Kendall Hunter being too small to play in the NFL and that was obviously proven wrong.

Guess it’s a good thing none of us are GMs! :P

      • Daniners says:

nfl.net? Anyway, he was generally viewed as a mid-to-late 2nd rounder. Who cares though, go see where the Packers have drafted most of their recievers. WR and RB are a dime dozen and hard to project. My guess, this guy will be an excellent WR in 2 years. Pro bowler? No, but outside of the top 7 picks this year, I don’t see a ton. This was a weak but very deep draft. I bet AJ rated equal with Hill with more production.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Adam

Jack was quite persistent that his mock was 100% accurate.

Must be a webpage issue. Because what is displayed is wrong.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, I nailed it, but the NFL execs messed up : )

Funny, the guy I picked at 61 went at 15, and Fleener is still on the board. I knew Irvin was good, and I am not looking forward to watching Davis try to get his hand on him for 2 games per year.

    • Brotha tuna says:

      I thought of Lloyd too.

  211. Adam707 says:

This guys got speed and hands. Plus return capability. The more I research the more I like it. Can’t wait till the season starts. Alex has a lot of weapons now

  212. Dan says:

@DS… Ya i mean Jenkins. He and Wallace are cut from the same cloth it seems. 6 foot. Fast. Great hands. Great ball locating skills. Should really help ‘lift the top off’ as they say. Jenkins plays like a professional too, i like his on field demeanor.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Dan

Shoot. Kinda wish you didn’t tell me now. Let me go to sleep thinking we had Wallace as well.
      :- )

  213. AES* says:

As I said yesterday. Even if we didn’t have a draft, we still have players currently on the roster to get us over the top.

We all went into this draft trusting Baalke/Harbaugh with their decisions. If they feel A.J. can contribute i’m all in!

Let’s get to TC and see what this kid has before reeming the FO. Baalke/Harbaugh might be wheelin’ and dealin’ at this very moment to attain a higher position with the 2nd pick?

  214. Spitblood says:

I like what the 49ers just did. They didn’t trade. They didn’t move. They didn’t panic. They also didn’t draft a guy the media or the blogs liked. They went out and found a guy nobody else was talking about, and picked him ahead of Randle, Fleener, Hill and Jeffrey. That’s confidence. And if you look at the kid on film, he’s good. This once again shows we have talent in the 49ers’ front office. This kid can catch the football, and he can run. It’s hard to bust in the NFL if you can do both things. Crabtree couldn’t do both coming out of college.

In addition, the 49ers didn’t make another mistake so many people on this blog were hoping they’d make – OG in the first. All the good guards are gone? Horse pucky. Kilgore was a 5th round selection. Solari will find depth behind Kilgore in the later rounds.

And even I speculated that the 49ers wanted that pass rusher the Seahawks got, and this was a fall back option, but if that’s the case, the 49ers could have traded back to collect more picks. The Broncos did it at 31. But Harbaalke sat tight and got who could have been their guy all along. Nobody will ever know. But I like the resolve, the pick, and thus far, I like day one.

  215. Hoferfan67 says:

The thing about Jenkins is if they could have drafted him at #61? Was he on anyone’s radar before pick #61? Seems like a reach but we won’t know until he is assimilated into the system/program and becomes productive.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer, Kinda similar to the Culliver pick last year. Everyone called it a reach, but he was a key to our defense. I would rather they gone with Fleener, but at least we got an offensive weopon. As you like to say, all arrows up right.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, I just saw Walterfootball’s 2nd round pick #38 have the Jags picking Jenkins so not much of a reach. Again, all about productivity. Now the 9ers finally have some weapons on offense.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That looks about right Hofer. He was rated as a 2nd round guy. How far do you think Fleener falls tomorrow?

      • Adam says:

Yeah, Walter had him there, Mayock was early second round, I think. NFL Net’s consensus was way off though.

Not a terrible reach but it does make you wonder if we couldn’t have gone back a bit. Although it takes a trading partner and maybe none could be found outside the division.

Weird but interesting. If he’s half as productive as Aldon Smith was last season… Sweet Jebus!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack< I say CF goes in the 1st half of 2nd round around #40. Maybe a bit earlier.

    • 23jordan says:

      Alexfan11,

ESPN said he was an early 2nd rounder. Possibly in the 1st 7 picks in the 2nd.

    • grimey9er says:

If he’s a good pro it doesn’t matter where you picked ‘em.

  216. rocket says:

I have no idea if this kid is any good or not but I do know Baalke and company know a lot more than I do so I’m on board with it. Kid is fast and is a more polished player than Hill who many would have been ok with.

After last year I’m not going to question these guys. They know what they’re doing. It just finished up one of the weirdest 1st rounds ever. Bunch of trades, players getting drafted way higher than expected, others falling out of the first and the whole thing took 3 hours. Crazy.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Seems to me that Jenkins will be the WR that can get separation similar to VD. Probably the new #1 but we’ll see soon.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I think you’re right, Rocket. I’ll admit I have no idea where this kid comes from, and how good he might be. But as others have said, after last year…pretty hard to doubt our brain trust, no? Shoot, these guys could probably take a centerfielder and turn him into a WR.
I hope they’ve got a good plan for getting some O line help…

  217. S.F.Native says:

I wanted Kleener, couldn’t believe it when they didn’t take him, guess what, if the coach and GM think Jenkins is the guy I”m on board 100%, Who knows what they have planned next. This is great, I love it. When it is all done, WE will see that these guys know what they are doing.

  218. TreeLimb says:

Grant…How old are you? I don’t you remember blowing tons of sunshine up the butts of Harbaugh and Baalke after last years draft either. Did you get into a fight with your girl or something…she kick your ass down the road? Don’t be so emotional.

  219. Dan says:

@DS… Ha ha …. Sorry to confuse… I just think its a notable comparison given the timeline of media events in 49erland since the season ended.

  220. Razoreater says:

And as Harbaalkes’ masterplan unfolds, what will be the gameplan? Rounds 2 and 3 are in my opinion where you can really find excellent value and production.

  221. Grumpy Guy says:

He catches with his hands, can run, and goes after the ball. Question is how he adjusts to the competition level in the NFL. I look forward to seeing him in red and gold this year. Crabtree will need to step up his game.

    • Manilaboy says:

      Grumpy,

If crabtree doesn’t change his work ethic’s, I won’t be surprise next season the niners move him. Its sad, since crabtree got drafted he never had a camp to work with the other players or a preseason games to prepare for the regular season games.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

Crabs had better come to TC ready to work this time. He is no longer the Golden boy and if does not watch it, he is going to get his butt replaced.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @manila and grumpy

Especially if Jenkins is in TC Day 1 participating.

  222. TIM says:

Baalke picked Jenkins a couple weeks ago and last night they all finalized their decision that it was Jenkins as their 1st pick and Baalke wrote that name on a paper and sealed it in an envelope and said, THIS is who we are going to pick !
He was who they wanted and they turned down the chance to pick many other players that all the so called experts and all the fans said they should pick. That is confidence in the ability to pick talent !

  223. Jacka says:

This coming from the guy who called Stephen Hill in top 10 and Luke Keucly not going in the first. Grant you know less than nothing about football let alone enough to doubt Baalke.

  224. Island breed says:

Feeling like a jets fan right now j-e-T-who did we just.pick? 2 of the biggest baddestOg in the draft sitting tjere at 30nm we draft.who? A wr? fleener would even have made more sense at least he coulhavstayed in and helped the weak right side of our line block some of the time. glenn and silatolu are there when we pick again

    • 23jordan says:

Fleener has been labeled as someone that can’t block at all.

    • Manilaboy says:

The 49ers have 4 TE”S Vernon, Delanie, Nate and konrad.. All these guys are big TE’S the smallest is Delanie all average 6’4 .

The niners are smart in getting A.J who has speed, good hands, with an average vertical threat and has the feel with the football field where to go..Seeing the films of this young speedster is remarkable everytime he catches the ball he gets alot of seperation from the defenders and has a dangerous breakaway speed..

  225. TxBgst9er says:

    First Gold Helmet of 2012:)

  226. NickRow says:

The 49ers picked the wrong Jenkins. I know Janoris has off field issues, but look at this from value point of view. J. Jenkins has top 10 talent. AJ Jenkins, on the other hand, has mid-2nd round talent at best. If you have a man crush on the guy, just trade down, get extra picks, and still get your guy.

Damn, with S. Hill, Fleener, R. Randle, Andrea Branch, and A. Silatolu still on the board, this pick does’t make sense. No wonder ESPN gave the 49ers the lowest grade.

  227. Brotha tuna says:

So, looking ahead, its way too complicated to try to Mock-up Rds #2 & #3. Let me offer this as an alternative:
1/ Guys I’m looking for on Day #2:
1A: Probably gone: Trumaine Johnson, Amini Silatolu, Peter Konz, Jared Crick.

Nobody knew the Texans and Wade Phillips were ready to take Aldon Smith on the 13th or something pick. Imagine if we would of traded back further because we all thought we could of had AS towards the end if the round? Same thing here, who cares what everyone thinks, if your happy and confident, go for it!!!

    • HanSL says:

Michael Lombardi said about Coach Walsh that he didn’t care about rates. 1st round, 2nd, 3rd? Who cares? If you think he’s the guy who will fit your team the best, just take him.

      In HarBaalke I trust.

going to be tough watching our OL struggle vs the speed pass rush of newly drafted players like bruce irvin, and bull rush of micheal brockers, while trying to contain fitz AND floyd. i certainly hope we can tighten up the OL. the kid looks great on film vs extremely subpar talent. i saw plenty of speed, plenty of seperation, a willingness and ability to make the tough catch. the one glaring thing (actually 2) that i wasnt able to find/see was his run blocking ability and how he deals with press coverage. the lousy big 10 teams dont play much press man coverage. but youtube does say that illinois seemed to target him upwards of 20 times per game. there must be a reason.

To go after the “sixth most popular WR choice of the talking heads” tells me Jenkins impressed more than the others who visited. And to see Jenkins picked over Fleener, Glenn, and other popular “best players available” says TB/JH feel they want to make *this* WR relevant in their scheme. First round picks make the team. Can’t see KW beating out Ginn. Jenkins has 2012 to get feel for NFL. His second year (2013), Ginn and Moss’ contracts are done. Manningham is on his last year and Crabtree only has one left. We are all Niners fans so let’s get behind this pick. Glad it was AJ Jenkins and not Janoris Jenkins!

  231. Grumpy Guy says:

On the clip that was posted, watch how he uses his hands. He attacks the ball with his hands – he does not let it come to his body. He has speed, maybe not ‘functional’ 4.31, but enough to reach the edge. He is smart. He has nice body control. He can take a hit. He can separate against this low level of competition, we’ll see against NFL corners.

I am cautiously very optimistic. Looking forward to seeing him in August.

    • NickRow says:

You just described Chris Owusu – except for taking the hit part – and could be had in later rounds.

  232. George says:

Grant, this kid seems like a Mike Wallace, Victor Cruz, and Brandon Lloyd all rolled up into one. How much is a player like that worth, if it turns out to be true? I was hoping for Fleener myself, but maybe they see Walker as too valuable to them in the running game.

    • Grumpy Guy says:

Fleener will probably be more productive in year one, if he goes to the right team. But this kid could be very good in two years, at a position we really need to substantially reinforce. I was taken aback like everyone when the pick was made (“WHO?”), but after watching him, I am cautiously very optimistic.

      • George says:

I’m with you. The story about Baalke being super-certain about the pick, is encouraging. Looking forward to tomorrow.

  233. Brodie2Washington says:

AJ Jenkins? Who? If not Fleener, Hill or Silatolu, then why not trade back? The only thing that makes sense is the 49ers must have thought another team was eyeing AJ Jenkins in picks 31-36. (I think that’s crazy, but what do I know)

    1) Baalke is very sharp, using his scout background to make a talent assessment about Jenkins the rest of the NFL totally missed. Like Aldon last year, only even more of a surprise. Jenkins will be a star. A quick twitch runner that can get separation and knife up field Victor Cruz style.

    or…

    2) Baalke has a great eye for defensive talent, but has yet to prove he can draft as effectively for offensive players. Jenkins will be lost, failing to distinguish himself while buried in a foursome of similar sized receivers including Crabtree, Williams and Manningham.

  234. Island breed says:

@ultimate warrior we keep drafting the wrong kind of WR so we can have ascapegoats when alex smith fails us again for th 9 th straight year

    • DS94everXev says:

      Yeah

That must be it. Destroy the team for the sake of not hurting AS’s feelings.

Seriously. Do you even think before you write?

    • Manilaboy says:

      Island breed,

Hope your comments was just a sarcastic remarks. I don’t remember the 49ers have drafted any wide receivers tobe a scapegoat for anyone. Thats very funny !
