I’m following up on a blog I previously posted about Santa Clara County withholding $30 million from the 49ers stadium project. The San Jose Mercury News, which is doing a very good job on this subject, followed up with its own article indicating the entire funding for the Niners project may be at issue.
Here’s what the article says: “While the money is a tiny fraction of what’s needed for the $1.2 billion stadium, it served as the initial building block to fund the project, similar to a down payment on a mortgage. The tax funds were used to secure up to $950 million in bank loans…If the loans disappear or shrink, they could delay the project – or worse.”

Come on Grant :( . You know that has no merit so why repeat it ? Just because someone wrote some nonsense doesn’t mean you have to pass it along,do your own homework and tell us the FACTS you uncover.
You sound like that Direct TV commercial where the guy gets restless waiting for his cable to come back on and he goes to the handball court to blow off steam and then he gets hit in the eye with a ball and goes to the emergency room and get a temp patch on the eye and then runs into gang members on the bus on the way home and they think he is trying to be a tough guy with a patch and all and they follow him and beat him up and he winds up in a ditch beat up. The commercial concludes … don’t wind up in a ditch, get direct TV.
Just because there is a dispute on when the Niners will get the extra $30 million the City owes them doesn’t come anywhere near the leap taken here that it is putting the whole project in jepardy. That is as silly as the crazy logic of the commercial !
Do your own writing and research and don’t reprint silly leaps of logic and irrational conclusions of others. (you have enough of your own faulty logic and irrational conclusions . :) ).
Schools discarded over 90 years of bowl tradition for hokey “BCSs” and “national championship” to get more TV revenue… NOT because of any burning curiosity about which team is the nations best.
I think the delima for sports reporters is if they connect the dots and explore why schools are selling out for more cash, it’s quickly becomes political reporting, not sports reporting.
Which is the greater concern?
1) College sports increasingly becoming mercenary joke, packed with fake “student” athletes
2) Two or more teams thinking they are the nations best
I’m picking number 1.
In a perfect world… bring back the ONLY the Rose, Cotton, Sugar and Orange Bowls. Play them all on Jan 1.
I would be OK with one exception. The two teams with the lowest student academic scores and the most rules violations could meet in the “Dexter Manley Bowl.”
Oooops. I posted to the wring article. Very sorry. I won’t quit my day job. Please delete the above.

While I agree with your premise that “student athletes” need to come first lets be real here.
The BCS and the NCAA in general is waayyyy more concerned about revenue and licencing rights than the academic scores of its participants.
Every time someone takes the winter semester off to train for the upcoming draft it illustrates the “student athletes” real priorities.
1AA and D2 have playoffs to figure out who the best team is and i suspect that their colective grades are better than those of D1 schools. (i understand that D1 schools recruit kids that are more athlete than student and D2 is the opposite but still)
I think that out of the 2 concerns that you cited only 1 can be trully solved. NCAA will allways be a mercenary joke no matter what, but at least with a playoff we can tell which school has the best hired guns
It may be the wrong article but I love the idea of a “Dexter Manley Bowl”.
Grant, I’m so sick of your options there off base and prejudice, you don’t like Alex Smith and you do everything in your power to run him down. You write about facts you know nothing on the subject of. You like a student trying to show you teacher you can write some baseless crap. Please do me a fever in fact all us 49ers fans and find another job, and stop writing about the 49ers, your articles are over the top. These last few articles have made me so mad I had to write. Live the sports writing to people who know how to write a real story full of facts not just you arm chair option. Your boring and I will not reading any more Press Democrat sports news, and I say this because there the once who pay you so they should be the ones to give you your walking papers, before I used to enjoy the Democrat not any more. Your reporting is amateur and 90% of the time baseless and you just can’t let go of your pure hat for Alex, the way you write is so full of you amateur high school grade writing.
Press Democrat fire Grant or loss me as one of your readers. Till I see that you done so I will no longer read any Democrat Sports News.
Poor Guy here is proof that our educational system needs that $30mil more than the 49ers : )
Yes it help to read it before you send bad on me
Guy Marker: the multitude of grammatical errors in your post detracts from credibility in your argument that Grant lacks proper journalistic skills. I think your real issue is that there are things you *want to hear*, and Grant is instead telling you what he thinks and sees, and the inherent conflict is too much for you to bear. You have to ask yourself then, are you a fan or are you a fanatic? How you handle your differences with Grant’s perspectives will in fact answer that question.
One thing I have to say for Grant, I agreed with him on Fleener!
