Vernon Davis clarifies his Super Bowl prediction, and more

SANTA CLARA – Vernon Davis stated last week he believes the Niners should be Super Bowl favorites. Today he discussed that statement, as well as the progress he and the offense is making in minicamp.

Q: How was it out there today for you?

VERNON DAVIS: It was nice, it was nice. We got some things done. We had a chance to install some plays and catch up on some things we hadn’t had a chance to touch base on yesterday.

Q: How does it feel to be the hunted instead of the hunters this year?

VERNON DAVIS: We like that, we like that. It’s always good when you have success, and when you have success everyone tries to come at you. We know that we must remain focused. That’s the key for us right now.

Q: Didn’t you mention recently that the 49ers should be the Super Bowl favorite?

VERNON DAVIS: I didn’t say it like that. I didn’t want to sound too cocky. I think we have the potential. I think we have a lot of potential and I’m not wrong for saying that. We have a lot of talent around here and I respect every man on my team. I respect them because they’re hard workers. I’m excited. It makes me excited because I know what we have going forward.

Q: We saw you make a back shoulder catch yesterday. Is that an indication that you guys are fine tuning the offense?

VERNON DAVIS: With the lockout, we had to hit the ground running last year. We didn’t have much time to build chemistry with Alex Smith. It was unfortunate, but that’s the way things were last year. This year is different. We have a chance to come out here and get better. We have a chance to communicate with Alex, get on the same page as him and learn. We’re out here going through tons of plays, so we get an opportunity right there to get everything done that we need to get done.

Q: There was a point last year where you just excelled. What happened that made you put up huge numbers late last season?

VERNON DAVIS: You play this game for a reason, and I know for me and the guys we have on this team we play to win. We play to get to the big stage, the big stage meaning the Super Bowl. We were a few games away, and when you’re that close you have to put everything on the line no matter what. For me, that was such a critical moment. It was so pivotal that I knew I had to show up. I always tell myself, “Big time players make big time plays all the time,” it doesn’t matter what the condition is. So I knew I had to help my team and be there for them, and that’s what I did. I made sure I took advantage of every opportunity – I seized the moment. From that point, I said we’ve got to get here again, and I know we can do it because of the guys we have.

Q: Are you able to start now from the point you left off at the end of last season?

VERNON DAVIS: Oh most definitely, most definitely. Each year is different – you never know what’s going to happen. You never know, but you have to approach this thing with a winning attitude. You can’t really predict anything. I can’t say that we’re going to win the Super Bowl. All I can say is that I strongly believe that we have the team to get to that point.

My Man didn’t back down from anything, just having high expectations; a winning attitude. #Like.

  2. TIM says:

I agree with VD,we should be THE favorite to win the SB !
Just about everyone would agree with that if most commentators and so called experts didn’t think we had a big weak spot that might hold the rest of the team back. That weak spot needs to come out smoking and prove all the doubters (me included ) wrong !

  3. BennyBlanco says:

I just really feel like this team is turning the corner… I mean we did great last year but I really believe we’re going to dominate more overall in all 3 phases of the game.

Grant… Since L.James can’t get here till late tomorrow and won’t have a chance to participate in this mini-camp. Will he have any opportunity to work out at the facility with other players on a one off basis or does he have to wait for TC?

  4. Ninermd says:

GET EM VD!!!! Confidence is glowing like it hasnt in 15 years. Let it glow and prove you’re good enough. Keys to a Dynasty. So fired up. Cant wait!

  5. gary says:

That sounds like the most mature Vernon Davis ever.
Should be a fun year for him, and I do not disagree with his assessment
    of the 49er chances.

    40 days until training camp.
84 days until the season starts.

How much scotch does it take to induce a 40 day coma?

Who really cares who the Super Bowl favorites are, we have a offense that was 29th in the league in spite of a 13-3 record, and horrific on third downs and the red zone. The people in the hockey community thought this was the year that the Sharks were going to win the cup. Wel that didnot happen. That is why they play the game.

    • Prime Time says:

The sharks are the softest team in the NHL, no wonder you like them, your soft as butter too!

      • neal says:

Typing that from your Mom basement.

      • Prime Time says:

No from yours and she was fine and divine, I knocked the dust off that……..mmmmmm!!!!!!!!!

      • Prime Time says:

And don’t forget a picture of you and Jack with the caption; “Dumb and Dumber”.

      • Prime Time says:

Jack 70 yearsold need love too, too bad I can’t help you but maybe your sidekick Fitzbob can help you out. He likes talking trash and that’s the story of your life!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Yes Prime Rib, I am Lloyd. I will be glad to hook up with Lauren Holly and leave the Golden Girls to you.

    • Neal says:

      Hey Jack,

They took our responses off to Prime Ratnich. They don’t want Slime crying to his Mommy, what a twerp.

      • Prime Time says:

        Neal, weak!

      • Jack Hammer says:

That’s ok Neal. Regarding the Sharks, that Stuart trade was interesting. Not often you see a team trade for a player with no contract.

      • Neal says:

The Stuart trade was pro-active. Stuart wants to play for the Sharks as his family lives in the South Bay since he was shipped to the Bruin in 2005 in the Joe Thorton trade. The Sharks didnot have to do that trade because he wants to play for the Sharks but it gives them advantage till June 30 to get a contract done, my guess 2 yrs for about $3 million per season. They also unloaded a player they donot want in Andrew Muarry, and Detroits does not want either.
Although Stuart is 32, he is as tough as nails and going to be a top 4 defensemen for the team if they get a deal done. This means that Douglas Murray will probably be gone, and he does have some trade value although he is on the slow side but the guy is builted like a Brick House, which reminds me of the famous song She a Brink House. :)

  9. Razoreater says:

With this Coaching Staff that Harbaugh has assembled it is reminicent of the star stellar staff Coach Walsh had. The talent at each position along with depth is excellent. A QB with a command of the offense who is more than eager to exercise the offensive demons. A special teams unit second to none. And the rock of this team, one of the greatest defenses of all time. The new trainer proved valuable keeping every player healthy. This team should feel confident and realize that the table is set, all they have to do is their job and come January they will be feasting on sweet victory.

    • Prime Time says:

All the pieces are in place to compete for a SB for many years to come. Its a young roster but I’d like to see the quality vets like Justin Smith, Jennings, Akers win one as a 49er.
As more success comes coaches on the staff will move on, it’s inevitable. The window is 2 years maybe 3.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Good stuff Razor. One of Harbaugh’s greatest strengths is talent evaluation, and that extends to the coaching staff. Good assistants want to work for him because they know it is a gateway to better things in their careers.

Soon their will be a Harbaugh coaching tree, which already has one limb with David Shaw.

A Super Bowl favorite, and 13 picks in the upcoming draft. It doesn’t get much better than this.

  10. Adam707 says:

Off topic but Gore was ranked 28th in the NFL’s top 100. Clearly his fellow players have alot more respect for him that alot of people on this blog.

    • Ninermd says:

True Dat. Up 68 spots too. And he was injured last season. If he’s healthy this season. Watch out now!

      • Adam707 says:

28th is a tad bit high in my opinion. I thought he would be 45-55 range. But he is definitely a key factor in our offense and i think some fans lose sight of that. He played huge role in the playoffs, he didn’t have flashy stats (combined 29 rushes for 163 yards and 13 catches for 83 yards )but he had very solid YPA and blocked great. In the games against PHI DET we don’t win if he’s not playing and the CLE and WAS games would have been even closer.

  11. . says:

They will never win the Super Bowl (or even go) until the curse has been eliminated from the roster.

As long as Alex is here. the passing offense will be no better than mediocre. Probably worse than that.
