Darcel McBath introduces himself

SANTA CLARA – The newest Niner, Darcel McBath, spoke today about how he became a Niner and how he can contribute to the team. Here’s a transcript.

Q: How did this opportunity come across for you?

McBATH: They just called me, asked if I was healthy and if I was in shape and if I was ready to play football and if I thought I could come in and compete and make the team.

Q: Are your health issues a thing of the past?

McBATH: Oh yeah. I’ve been training hard, eating right – all the things I’m supposed to do to stay healthy.

Q: You broke your arm in a game?

McBATH: Yes, I broke it in December last year. Rehab went well. It took a little longer than expected. Got it back to 100 percent and now I’m ready to go.

Q: You played safety for Denver and cornerback for Jacksonville. What do you see yourself doing here?

McBATH: Wherever I need to. Wherever I can help.

Q: If Dashon Goldson stays away for a while does that open the door for you?

McBATH: I haven’t even thought about that. That really hadn’t even crossed my mind. I think my job is to compete everyday and do the right thing, and that’s what I’m going to do.

It’s good to bring in competition. In hingsight, perhaps they should re-signed Madieu Williams. But having Spillman, C. Jones, and T. Robinson is a good mix even if Goldson decides to hold out.

No. We are 14-2 if Williams falls onto a ball at his feet. I’m not the biggest DG fan. But he did find himself near the ball and got it every now and then.

That JS play to strip the ball in Philly means nothing if it rolls out of bounds. And it almost did if not for DG being near the ball. A few years ago, I remember PW stripping the ball carrier 2x in the same game. No other Niners were around, and the ball rolled out of bounds. No game changing play. No TO. And we lost.

Last year, we had guys near the ball. Same strip. Difference this year being a guy was there to get it.

The old axiom is true. Get lots of defenders near the ball, good things happen.

        DS,

I’m not slamming DG. In fact, I hope that he signs a long term deal. It’s good to see, however, that the FO and coaching staff have a contengency plan in case he doesn’t.

    What did we learn today?

    1. Jenkins has still not worked out with Jerry Rice. Just go PR to say he would?

    2. Ginn is healthy, confident, and has bulked up a bit to make it through the season stronger.

    3. LaMichael James has been hitting the books and working hard with the coaches and CK to make up for the missed offseason practices.

    4. Scott Tolzien sounds like a Jim Harbaugh clone.

    5. The signing of Darcel McBath is further evidence that this organization is all about competition for every spot on the roster.

  3. Kingtwon32 says:

    Madieu is with the Redskins

  4. gw2 says:

Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.

  5. Crab15 says:

Crabtree got McBath the job. They were teammates at Texas Tech.
Getting waived by the Jaguars doesn’t help your resume.
It’s “who you know” not “what you know”…. right?
Fake it til you make it McBath. :-)

    • oldman49 says:

      Because he broke his arm.

    • rocket says:

      Crab,

I think McBath got the job because he played for Donatell in Denver; not because he played with Crabtree in College.

Most of us questioned the signing of Perrish Cox when it happened too, and he stood out as one of the better DB’s in OTA’s. McBath may be a camp body or he may turn out to be a key contributor somewhere. Who knows?

    • Bird says:

Hater .. He played extremely well n Denver but was injured too often and the jags obviously don’t know talent when they c it ..

  6. Paul Garrett says:

    Grant (question),

I realize that with TC upon us, you’ll have real football stories to write … I’m curious though if you’ve sat down with NaVorro Bowman, the lone Penn State player on the roster and asked him about the entire mess?

    • oldman49 says:

Please leave Bowman alone re PS. Tired of all the criminal & celebrity BS that fills the off-season. Let’s move on.
