Dashon Goldson signs the franchise tag

A central question of the 49ers’ offseason has been answered: Pro Bowl free safety Dashon Goldson will not sit out training camp.

The Niners announced Thursday morning that Goldson has signed his one-year franchise tender worth $6.212 million. Goldson reportedly arrived at team facilities this morning in time for a 9 a.m. meeting.

Stay tuned – all the veterans report to camp today, and I’ll be posting interview transcripts this afternoon. Perhaps Goldson will talk.

Glad he signed in time for camp. Now the defense can all prepare together.
On a side note the niners sign Leonard Davis. I like this move. I think he still has some quality football left in him. I think this also shows that alex boone may not be working out at guard.

      Not so fast there,

I question wether or not Davis can even hold up physically for any period of time. The guy hasn’t played for 2 years, but hey we’ll see.

    • MJ says:

They havent had one practice with pads on, what on earth would make you believe he isnt working out? Because they bring in a 10 year vet who didnt play a snap last year? No. He’s here for depth first and foremost.

      • f49er says:

Talk about calling the kettle black?

What makes you think the 49ers signed him for depth only Smart Guy?

This team is scary good. If they start the season off with a win against Green Bay, I can see them repeating their record of 13-3 but, if they lose then most likely be around 11-5 or 10-6 which would still be good enough to win the division. I really hope Ahmad Brooks and Ray Macdonald have a bigger breakout year like 11 sacks from Brooks and 10 from Macdonald, then the front seven would be too good to stop.

    • Nick Row says:

Nice post. I think the Niners worst case scenario (injuries, under performance, etc) will be 10-6. With all starters returning, I expect the Niners to solid on D once again. Special teams will also be rock solid. The question – as has been for a while now – is the offense. With improvement over last year, I’d expect 13-3 or even 14-2.

I still think Boone is gonna be our starter at RG. Harbaalke like compitition and i think the signing of Davis is a sign that Person and Kilgore aren’t getting the job done. 1 of them will get cut soon. Most likely it will be Mike Person.

  4. Neal says:

Poor thang, he had to settle for 6 million bucks. Heard he turned down 32 million over 5 years.

    • Nick Row says:

He sure made a mistake. He’s going down the path of A. Franklin and could have locked up a long term deal. Instead he may end up like Franklin who is now on is 3rd 1-year contract.

    • Neal says:

      Maybe Nick,

The only difference perhaps is that he will be in better shape then Franklin and he at least is going to be at the start of training camp and seems to be a better team guy then Franklin. He also has a good attitude, he is disappointed but life goes on, although he threw for a loop when he said a actual formal offer was not made.

  5. f49er says:

Now that DS has signed his Tag we can all move on to more important things like getting that 6th Trophy in the glass display at 4949.

  6. MidWestNiner says:

    Smart move Dashon Goldson.

  7. BOS49er says:

Obviously glad to have DG back in the fold. It kind of worked out perfectly. Spillman got all those extra safety reps and DG didnt miss any significant camp time and will be sharp for the regular season. He is in a better position that A.Franklin was IMO because there are 31 teams that would be interested in DG as a free agent as opposed to AF who would only draw interest from teams that run the same scheme and are looking for a NT.

At worst Davis provides camp competition at guard at best it gives us a rather hefty middle of the line where we had some problems especcialy at RG
