SANTA CLARA – Dashon Goldson, who signed his one-year franchise tender this morning, explained to reporters this afternoon why he chose to sign it today. Here’s what he said.
Q: How does it feel to be back?
GOLDSON: It feels great. The offseason was real good. I’m very confident in everything that went on. I’m glad to be back here to get this show on the road.
Q: What are feelings on playing on a one-year deal?
GOLDSON: It’s just one of these things, man. It comes with the territory. Of course, I wanted something long-term, but it ain’t all bad. I think I can go out here, and play on this and come back to the table again next year.
Q: You could have reported at any time. Why the first day?
GOLDSON: It was a no-brainer, man. I owed it to my teammates. Those guys have been working extremely hard. I missed a little part of the offseason earlier and I didn’t want to miss another part of this training camp. I wanted to come back out here and sharpen up, pick up from where we started off last year. I didn’t want to get off to a slow start during the season.
Q:Was there also a sense that this could be a pretty special season and you wanted to make sure you were here to get it off on the right foot?
GOLDSON: Definitely. We did some good things last year. It was very important for us to start fast and finish faster. We’ve got a lot of new addition and just to get acquainted with those guys. There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be sharpened up on the defensive side of the ball.
Q: How close were you to getting a long-term deal worked out? Were you surprised you couldn’t?
GOLDSON: I was a little surprised. It panned out that way. I saw it leaning toward that way and I just accepted it for what it was. There’s no hard feelings. Like I said, it’s just one of those things. It ain’t bad money. The most important thing is just being out here and getting the season started.
Q:Was a formal contract offer ever made to you?
GOLDSON:Um … not really.
Q: Did you have any health issues in the offseason?
GOLDSON: None whatsoever. I approached my offseason the same way I do every year. Just work hard. I’ve been able to train with a couple trainers this year, I was in Miami with (trainer) Pete (Bommarito). I was with Travelle Gaines with Performance Gaines and Ryan Carpretta out at Proactive. Those guys did a good job. Thanks to those guys I came to camp in shape, passed the (conditioning) test with flying colors. I’m excited to get practice going.
Q: Why go to so many different trainers instead of sticking with just one?
GOLDSON: This is my sixth year and I always want to add to my game and just try new things. I never just stick with one. A lot of guys out there have things to offer. I like the challenge in the offseason to make my training camps and my season that much easier.
Q: Did you watch film of yourself in the offseason?
GOLDSON: I did a little bit. I left a little bit out there. That’s another thing, just coming back here into camp and picking up where I left off as an individual. But at the same time, as a team.
Q: How do you keep the frustration from the business-side of this from carrying over on the field?
GOLDSON: I wouldn’t say frustrated. You really can’t say that. I was a little disappointed. It’s just one of those things. I was in a situation last year and I just had to take it upon myself and realize what’s the task at hand. We’ve got a good football team here, we’ve got a chance to do something special and that’s my main focus. What didn’t get done didn’t get done. I’m sure it will get done sometime next year.
Q: Was it disappointing when you saw other (franchise-tagged) safeties like (Tyvon) Branch and (Michael) Griffin get deals done?
GOLDSON: It’s just what I’ve done here. I wasn’t looking at those guys … What I did here is what I did here.

I love his sttitude and drive to continue off what happened last year. Not a single day missed… everyone has seem to bought in to “Team First” mentality!
Yep,
I have to say I was surprised with his “unselfish” comments about not letting his team mates down. Great Attitude!
Good for you Goldson, you made the right choice coming into camp.
Dashon … Glad yer back …!!
Now … let’s get # 6 !!
Grant,
When are the next practices that are going to be open to the media?
Thx
@ Benny
Grant can confirm, but I think the media is invited to the Friday practice.
The media is there all weekend. Friday, Sat, And Sunday.
Didn’ have a doubt in my mind that Goldson wold be all about Business and be in Camp on time.
I think people talk alot of yayo abou the guy but no team can field blue chippers at every position. It would be great but Dashon works well within the structure of this team. That is all hat should matter. :)
Well he’s NOT all about business; that’s why he’s here. Just saying’ ..
@ceadderman
I am mildly happily surprised. I thought he would hold out several weeks. After the title game, this is a nice step forward.
Welcome back Goldson. Hope you exceed expectations and at the end of the season are a Super Bowl champion.
Goldson is gold Son!
Wise move. Glad he’s in the fold and ready to go.
This blog seems to write topics that are controversial to get hits. So here is a little bit of contraversy to stay in harmony with Grant. Greg Rosenthal just posted thepreseason power rankings…Laughable at best, but they have the 49ers ranked 12th. Teams like Kansas City and Texans are ranked higher.
What makes even less sense is that everyone else in the division is ranked lower than the team. That means Greg assumes the team will win 6 divisional games. They are also ranked higher than the Jets, Miami, Chicago and the Bills. Four more wins. at worst, Greg’s assumptions are that the team will go 10-6. He probably should have checked the schedules of some of the teams he shafted. Credibility ranking of 0.
I agree that the rankings are too low, but the leap from being the best in the division to going 6-0 in division games is specious. It’s not that binary.
Ya but Predictions are just that….Predictions,
Doesn’t affend me at all because the 49ers still need to prove it on the field which I’m over the top confident in. Let the Games begin!
A bit off topic (okay, a LOT off topic) but this is beautiful and makes me happy. Why the Seahawks suck: http://deadspin.com/5929379/why-your-team-sucks-2012-seattle-seahawks
WOW!
That Dude did not hold back. He may need some Anger Management.
@ Clemons
Thanks for the link. I wondered where Jordo went.
That was a great article. I love a good laugh to start the day.
…suprised a formal contract was never offered….
..makes sense in terms of $$$ for the team in the future…..having probowl LB’s means you can get by with a secondary that only needs to focus on coverage…….
This is what is called stretching the truth. Goldson was offered a contract I guarantee you that. What he wasn’t offered was a contract that involved the money he wanted. That’s why he responded to the question with “not really.” You can also see by his dismissal of the last question regarding the other Safeties who signed, that he wasn’t impressed with their deals and was holding out for more. He’s had two different agents try and work out a long term deal for him and both have failed. At some point he needs to look in a mirror and realize he isn’t worthy of the deal he wants, at least not yet.
Freaking sports journalists – how many times can we needle this guy about his contract? Eventually, he might actually say: Yes I’m pissed I didn’t get a longterm deal I’m the best safety in the NFL! Good job Dashon, don’t take the bait!
