Josh Johnson explains why he likes Harbaugh’s coaching style

SANTA CLARA – The Niners newest quarterback, Josh Johnson, spoke today about his comfort level in the offense, his history with Colin Kaepernick, and why he likes Jim Harbaugh’s coaching style so much. Here’s a transcript.

Q: How has it been going for you getting into the playbook?

JOSH JOHNSON: It’s been going great. I’ve been fortunate for the last few years to play for a variety of different offensive coordinators, playing for Jon Gruden, Coach Harbaugh, so I’ve been able to learn the whole concepts of the game, and now with Greg Roman’s offense I’m getting a feel for how he does things. Just having this warm-up period, or as us quarterbacks like to call it – the oil-up period – It’s been great for me because now I’m a lot more comfortable in the offense, playing a lot faster, getting through things a lot quicker, getting to know my teammates a lot better now.

Q: Do you have any early memories of your time working out with Colin Kaepernick in high school?

JOSH JOHNSON: Yeah, he was a lot bigger than me then. He’s still a lot bigger than me. We’ve been working out together for a long time now. A lot of our mechanics we learned from the same guy. It’s good to have him as a teammate. He’s a great guy.

Q: What’s your impression of this offense?

JOSH JOHNSON: We always want to be in a position to have a good play. I’ve been around coaches who believe “We’re going to do what we do and they have to stop us.” Coach (Harbaugh) always wants to put you in position to have the most successful play because it’s hard to get points and to get yards in this league.

Q: You knew Harbaugh when he was starting out as a head coach at the University of San Diego. Has he changed his approach to coaching since then?

JOSH JOHNSON: No. He’s always pushing you, breaking you out of your comfort zone and challenging you. That’s who he’s always been. In college he used to always tell me, “I make it hard for you in practice so the game is a lot easier,” and he still does that. He pushes you hard in practice. He wants to make it hard on you, and then when you get in the game you can go out there and relax and be more confident.

I actually wanted to draft this kid in the 5th Round, but Coach Singletary didn’t. I’ve watched a few of his games and I came away with the fact that when the play breaks down he is unable to improvise. He seemed to get a little nervous in the pocket under perceived pressure as well. I look for him to improve under Coach Harbaugh, but I simply do not see him rising any higher than three on the depth chart this year.

Just met Brandon Jacobs at airport in Atlanta. He’s on his way to San Fran, he said they were gonna do their best to make it to the Super Bowl. Go niners!

    Good articles Grant.

  4. Frank says:

It’ll be a tough battle to see who ends up #2 QB…I think JJ’s got as good a shot as CK, but either way, I’m happy to have Josh. He’s got some experience and should Alex go down, Harbaugh may well call on Josh to keep things moving.

  5. f49er says:

JJ seems to be a good guy but let’s be clear here….

K-Gun wins this battle for the #2 Spot. He’s the Future for the 49ers & I believe Jimbo is Hell Bent in making him a Star ala Cam Newton where he’ll be able to beat you with his arm & legs. That’s just the evolution of the QB in the NFL today with D-lineman & LB’s having the speed of a WR in short distances.

I am just curious to know if Dashon Goldson has shown up to training camp and if he has signed the 1 year offer?
    Thanks!

JJ quoting Harbaugh: “I make it hard for you in practice so its easier in the game”

SSgt. J. Morin, D.I., Parris Island, SC: “The more you sweat in peacetime, the less you bleed in wartime.”

Not to go off topic but the NFL network is killing me. 2.5 hours of PM non stop glorified walkthrough coverage. you would think that you would run out of things to say about a team that went 8-8 and squeeked in to the postseason. But going strong as ever. Its not like there is any other teams out there to cover, i need to see caled heine run with the broncos 2s

G O L D S O N signs!!! Now we are locked and loaded to deliver the goods.

Great news. The defensive backfield will have a full camp to prepare for Rogers on opening day.

    • Nick Row says:

This is good news for the team. However, I’m not so sure this is the best move for Goldson. He seems to be following the path of A. Franklin who’s still looking for that lucrative long term deal.

      • FDM says:

I think this is a great move for both Goldson and the Niners for a couple reasons. He is the leader of the secondary and has also been instrumental in helping A. Brooks on the field and other players interms of keeping them in the games menatlly and lined up accordingly. For awhile, I think he wore the green dot?
He will be more motivated this year to play at a high level to finally get the long term contract he deserves if he puts in another good year like last, hopefully from SF.

The Niners need this guy, he’s aggressive, causes turnovers and is a ballhawk. I have said this before, he reminds me of Tim MacDonald. He’s also very young but been in the league a long time and has been relatively healthly his entire career considering how reckless he plays. One of my favorite 49ers!

        @ Nick:

I do not understand your comment regarding Goldson and Franklin. If I remember correctly, Franklin held off on signing his tender and missed several weeks of training camp and maybe even some pre-season games. As a result, he got off to a slow start in the regular season, never recovered and had a forgettable year.

By contrast, Goldson has signed on time for training camp, so he should hit the regular season at full speed. I think it is a much better approach than what Franklin did.

Or were you simply referring to the fact that, like Franklin, Goldson did not agree to a long-term contract with the 49ers, presumably because he overvalues himself? If so, then never mind.

      • Nick Row says:

        @ Claude
Sorry for being vague. I was referring to the fact that Goldson – like Franklin – passed on signing a multi-year deal. As a result Franklin is on his 3rd 1-year contract and on his 3rd team in 3 years. None of us know where Goldson will be next year, but if his play slips, he’ll probably end up signing another 1-year deal.

  10. MauiDave says:

Was JJ referring to Singletary when he said some coaches say “We’re going to do what we do and they have to stop us.” ? What a contrast to JH actually game planning to outsmart the other team. I recall MS saying we aren’t going to outsmart anyone…how prophetic of him.

  11. FDM says:

    49ers sign veteran Leonard Davis!

    • Prime Time says:

I guess this means they were not completely sold on Boone or Kilgore starting at RG. I always felt Boone with his size ad stature was more suited for right tackle. Bringing in a vet will allow Boone to be the 1st backup at RT and LT but not sure why the added depth is needed with Slowey, Person, and Kilgore already in the mix?

      • FDM says:

Looney is hurt but is he not supose to be ready by week 1?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Not so quick on the not sold part Primer. We all know that competition is what Harbaugh is all about, and what better way to make that happen then bring in a vet.

      • rocket says:

This is what I expected them to do, not necessarily signing Davis, but a vet to compete with the status quo. Slowey seems like a talented kid, but in a season where you are thinking SB, I’m guessing the Coaches would prefer more experience on the Oline.

Before signing Davis, the depth consisted of two second year late round picks, and two first year players; one being a late round division II OT and the other a 4th round pick with a bad foot.

This makes a ton of sense and unless Davis proves to be completely washed up I think he makes the team based on experience alone.

      • brotha Tuna says:

Looney isn’t eligible to return until week#7 or#8 due to assignment to the NonFootballInjury List, at which point he’ll be a rookie who missed contact in OTAs and TC.
        Boone is converting from Tackle.
Person & Kilgore are unproven 2nd year players.
Slowery is a Div II rookie converting from Tackle to Guard & Center.
And yes, JH loves competition to hone the fine edge on his players and team.
Davis provides experience and a track record as a Run-Game Bulldozer. He’s seen a lot of blitzes in his day. He rode the bench at Detroit last year, so we’ll have to see what he’s got left. I did find it encouraging that his conditioning seems adequate for a big ol’ guy.

  12. Stan says:

Wiz resigned as a Raider coach. Man,you have to be a die hard O-line coach to resign simply because you teach man on man blocking and not zone blocking. Or was it the other way around?,no matter you get my point.

    • rocket says:

It’s being reported that Wiz resigned for personal reasons Stan. I’m guessing if it was because of the blocking scheme he would have quit a long time ago.

    • FDM says:

Stan, who cares about the Raiders on a 49ers blog?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Super Stan, don’t listen to FDM’S negativity, YOU ARE A GENIUS!

      • FDM says:

@Jack, stick to helping Neal out, looks like the kids got issues.

      • Neal says:

Anything Stan says I want to here, and FDM why don’t you move with Prime Slime and DS, you all 3 can be BFF.

      • Prime Time says:

Fitzperv you are so predictable, this is like shooting fish in a barrel, poor pathetic Neal, angry much?

      • FDM says:

Sure thing Neal, great advice and thanks!

      • Neal says:

Prime Perv, you have to respond to every one of my posts. It is soooo easy to get under your fur. You take this blog so seriously.
FDM since you have more class then Prime Pimp, and not really bash me, nothing needs to be said.
