SANTA CLARA –Dashon Goldson may hold out the beginning of training camp – he still hasn’t signed his franchise tag – so the Niners were proactive Monday, signing defensive back Darcel McBath to a one-year contract.
The Denver Broncos drafted McBath with the 48th overall pick in 2009. Current Niners defensive backs coach Ed Donatell was on the Broncos staff at the time, so McBath has a connection to Niners current coaching staff.
McBath (6-1, 198 pounds) mostly played free safety for the Broncos before he got cut last offseason. He later signed with the Jaguars, but he broke his arm and again was cut. He’s a good special teams player, and he will compete with C.J. Spillman for the third safety job.

Grant, any feel for how the Niners will use this guy? I know he’s played mostly (if not all) at CB, but is he going to play FS in training camp (training-camp body) while Goddson is holding out?
“Goldson”
PFF, Did you read the post? He already answered your question.

Jack take it easy, why you always playing blog policeman? Somebody makes a mistake, states an opinion, blows a fart and your all over them! Dude roll a fatty and take a load off, jeezzzzz!!!!!!
Primer,
What are you the blog protecter? Dude asked a question and I helped him find the answer. Talk football now?
Ok Jack my apologies, don’t get all ape on me. This guy might just be a camp body to withstand the pounding of two days.
I’m just hoping Goldson signs and gets in camp. For me personally I think he is an underrated player on a really good defense. He made some costly mistakes last year with bad angles and over playing the ball but for the most part, he is our best player in the secondary. The Niners need to get him signed long term and stop being cheap!
Darn it Primer! I agree with you on that.
I too really like Goldson, and want to see him here long term. At the same time I like how the team has set themselves up to eventually move on without him if needed.
That last paragraph wasn’t there when I first posted the question.
Does this guy have any chance of sticking?
He might. The guy has talent. If he makes the team, it will most likely be because of his special teams contributions.
He was cut by the Donkeys and South Jacksonville High School (Jags). He’ll probably have some neat human interest stories in the paper during training camp and then be forgotten by October.
I do not think Mr. Goldson is the long term answer for the Forty Niners. Goldson contributed to losses against the Cardinals in Week 11 and the Giants in the NFC Championship with costly errors. His gamble on the Darren Sproles touchdown in the divisional round gave the Saints a fourth-quarter lead as well.
The perceptive analysts at Pro Football Focus also illuminated some disturbing statistics. They noted that opposing quarterbacks completed 67.4 percent of their passes and totaled a 94.1 QB rating when throwing into Goldson’s coverage. He allowed the fourth-most TDs (4) from the safety position to boot.
But he hits like a truck, causes fumbles, tied a team high 6 INT’s and is a leader on the defense. This is why stats don’t tell the whole story. He’s a passionate old school style football player in the mold of Tim MacDonald/Ronnie Lott. Id rather base my opinion on the way this guy sacrifices his body every game then some stat that gives me a percentage on QB completion rate, sorry too nerdy for me, I guess I’m just old school!
Precisely why the 49ers did not offer top safety dollars. He has to elevate his game if he wants that kind of payday. If he holds out, he will not get better and he will not be a 49er next year.
But he’s inconsistent. He has followed up a good year with a horrible one. He needs to prove that he is a constant threat and not any up-and-down player. If he holds out, he stands a good chance of not being here come the 2013-2014 season.
An, not any. Dang Android.
I agree. He reminds me of Taylor Mays. More interested in hitting than covering. he doesn’t wrap up on tackles and with the league pushing less contact and more flag football, Goldson is a 15 yard liability when he does actually hit someone.
I think 31 other teams showed us that Goldson is not the future.
The referees are going to be even more vigilant protecting players with the latest concussion scares. The liability for the NFL certainly coming down the road is going to mean a surplus in 15 yarders until they reduce the contact in this league. Goldson is not the answer.
Safety is the last position to overpay on. The vast majority of competent safeties in the NFL are paid near the bottom of the pay scale, relative to all other positions. It’s a value position, and one of the ways you build a strong team is figuring out where to maximize value. It’s at safety, as long as you don’t think you need Polamalu or Reed.
