Training camp report: Manningham and Bowman shine

SANTA CLARA – Here are my observations from the second padless practice of the Niners training camp.

THE GOOD

  • Mario Manningham – Four catches (two against the first team defense), no drops. He could have had five catches, but Alex Smith overthrew him deep when he had beaten Perrish Cox down the left sideline. Manningham beat Culliver short towards the end of practice. Culliver was so frustrated he slapped Manningham in the face. Harbaugh instantly rebuked him.
  • NaVarro Bowman – Stripped Kyle Williams on the third play of seven-on-sevens. Williams caught the ball over the middle facing the quarterback, and as soon as he turned up field to run, Bowman ripped the ball out of his hands and the defense recovered it.
  • A.J. Jenkins – Four catches (one against the first team defense for a short gain), one drop. Jenkins had the second best practice of all the wide receivers.
  • Aldon Smith – Even in a padless practice, he dominated. He was in the quarterbacks’ faces all day. He recorded two touch sacks, but he could have gotten more. He’d frequently let up right before he arrived at the quarterback so the offense could complete the play.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

  • Randy Moss – Two drops. Tried to catch a deep pass from Smith one-handed and dropped it, then dropped a perfect pass from Josh Johnson over the middle.
  • Kyle Williams – One fumble. Didn’t protect the ball when he blindly turned upfield, and Bowman stripped him. After the play, wide receivers coach Johnnie Morton showed Williams how to turn upfield while shielding the ball with his body.

THE REST

  • No sign of Michael Crabtree on the practice field today. He hurt his ankle yesterday in an eleven-on-eleven scrimmage.

KW fumbles the ball that is a shocked, did he dive for a punt too, or perhaps let a punt hit his Knee?

    • Da-Hayn-49er says:

      get over it…

      • Prime Time says:

Burrrrrpppppp!!!!!!! Excuse me fitzperv, did you say something?

      • Neal says:

Yea I sent you crying to your mommy Slime Perv, all you do in your mommy’s basement is burp. That is your entertainment, heard you were a bad girl and your Mommy took your TV away. Poor thang !!

      • Neal says:

Your the one Fatnich perv that got so upset that I called out your other man love KW. Take those depression pills.

    • MidWestNiner says:

So what if Williams fumbled? It was stripped by Bowman, who has shown a knack for doing that. Moss had two drops. Does that mean he should go back into retirement? If Williams does that when it really matters, then there is a reason for concern. Training camp is the time to correct those mistakes so they don’t happen during a game.

    • Madrushn says:

What Neal does best….. Neal and Bob!!!!!

  2. elGuapo says:

    ■Kyle Williams – One fumble

GOD I hope he makes the team!!!!

    • Manilaboy says:

Not again is only pre-season practice, the guy can’t put ball away safely from the defenders..

  3. Manilaboy says:

Crabtree is back to his old self again !

    • elGuapo says:

It’s just preseason practice ;) Better to get injured during practice than real games. He’ll be ready for the regualr season.

  4. Chimmichunga says:

Culliver couldn’t cover manningham as a member of the giants. And he can’t cover him playing on the same team.

  5. Prime Time says:

Crabtree no where to be seen, what a surprise! That ankle/foot was a concern before the draft and now it’s haunting him, or maybe he’s just a little soft.
Just want to know how a player can always be hurt every single training camp since being drafted? Prima Donna!

  6. zoom says:

    please cut kyle williams

  7. Howard The Duck says:

Thank God for Aldon Smith. With all the nasty QBs we face this year he couldn’t have come at a better time. He’s gonna wreck those fools up!

    Kyle Williams, smh.

  8. Manilaboy says:

Missing practice before the preseason game is a habit to crabtree. He’ll just blame the other players for his mistakes Not to worry..

  9. 49erForlife says:

    Nathan Palmer > Kyle Williams

  10. 49erman says:

Just frustrating to hear that crabtree can’t get healthy in the early stage of the season. He’ll missed practice and probably the 4 preseason games. And that will delay his progression again. Damn !

  11. Busterman says:

Kyle williams, is expendable. Keep it up kyle, you’ll soon find out in the waiver line..

  12. STKNINER says:

Kyle will be fine, this is just a learning process. Crab will be fine, after Greg called him out last year, he knows he has to show what he can do.

  13. Razoreater says:

Not worried about the Moss droppings. I said before Kyle Williams will be cut come September, along with Boobie. Cullivers Travels slapping Manningham already? Golly! Can’t wait for the real deal tommorrow.

    • Neal says:

I agree Razor, KW will be cut. Maybe he can play for the San Jose Sabercats.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Kyle Williams won’t get cut. We need experience on the field in case one of the starting WRs goes down.

      • Razoreater says:

5 is the magic number. As in the final five to make the team. Moss/Crabtree/Manningham/Jenkins/Ginn/?

      • Razoreater says:

Jenkins is touted to be able to play every Wr position.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I think we will have six WRs this year. After how badly the WR corp was maimed last year, I’d be surprised of there were less. And please don’t count Ginn in this. He needs to only be used in special teams and in fly sweeps.

      • Jack Hammer says:

For what it’s worth I agree with you MWN. I have been sayin for months they will carry 6 WR’s:

        Crabtree
        Moss
        Manningham
        Williams
        Jenkins
        Ginn

      • ribico says:

        >>I have been sayin for months they will carry 6 WR’s

I also agree, MWN and Jack. After last year’s late season WR attrition debacle, the team will go overboard to make sure it’s not repeated.

      • Nick Row says:

        Jack
I agree regarding those 6 WRs as a realistic scenario. However, I’m rooting for Chris Owusu to beat out Kyle Williams.

      • Neal says:

        Experience Mid West?

A experienced player does not dive for punts or let’s punts hit him in the knee. He is not a sound and discipline football player.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I’m not talking about special teams Neal. I’m talking about the offense. He didn’t do bad when he had the chance except during the playoffs. The team needs his WR experience.

      • Neal says:

I am hoping Mid West that Owusu makes the team, he can fly and has great hands. I am on Nick Rowe band wagon on this guy. I am a Stanford fan, and rooting for the kid.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I am too Neal, but I think both him and Palmer are going to be on the practice squad.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @midwest

There is no reason to hate KW. The kid made a mistake. Didn’t do it on purpose. I agree that some here hate KW. But they have no reason to do so. They could stick to “KW won’t make the team” and that is fine. But talking about him as some have here…No. Not cool.

    • ribico says:

With MC iffy, they are going to cut another starting WR??? No way.

  14. zito the man says:

The 49ers will be okay if Kyle and crabtree f-up ! The niners are loaded with good talent this year at WR. You won’t notice missing these two clowns.

  15. Brian says:

NaVorro Bowman is one of the best LB’s in the league, he could have stripped the ball from most RB’s, TE’s, and WR’s in the NFL.
That was a sign of Bowman being that good, not Williams being that bad.

  16. Bee says:

Bunch of knee jerk reactions to ONE padless pratice….

  17. undercenter says:

Well Crabs there are only so many reps in training camp. Your absence allows others to get better, notabley Jenkins. Glad to hear Manninghams name mentioned and of course Bowman. I read somewhere Cowboy did his bull rush thing like he did against the Saints. Aldon being Aldon. So early in camp not much to be concerned with anyone to include Crabs.

    • zito the man says:

Better to have Manningham ahead of Crabtree ! Maybe will finally have WR that can catch. Instead of blaming his co-players.

  18. MidWestNiner says:

Grant, I’ve asked this before and didn’t get a response. How is Alex Boone looking at RG?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Let’s wait until the pads go on to judge the guards.

      • AES* says:

        Grant,

There are always some big surprises in TC that usually involve low draft picks or rookie free agents.

A couple of my favorites is Nathan Palmer and Joe Looney. Aside from the obvious positional competitions taking place, it will interesting how these two come along.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Will do. What’s your impression of of Cox? I know it’s early, but does he have the edge on Culliver as the 3rd CB?

  19. Nick Row says:

Hmm … Kyle Williams fumbling and Alex Smith over throwing WRs. Did anybody say deja vu?

Alex Smith overthrew him (MM) deep when he had beaten Perrish Cox down the left sideline

    • . says:

That’s because Alex Smith sucks ass, he has ALWAYS sucked ass and always WILL suck ass. No accuracy, no talent, no field vision, nothing.

And yet you people keep defending him as if he were your wife. I mean, I KNOW you WANT him to be your wife but geez…

      • MidWestNiner says:

        Previously on Get Over Yourself…

      • ribico says:

And get over his sexual fixations as well.

      • I agree! He is NEVER going to be anything but a marginally serviceable QB. He DID test the free-agent waters and got zilch, so at least they got him back for a low cap #, and the Niners can load up the rest of the team. With him as QB, The Niners need all the talent they can get at the other positions.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Another bright one who thinks the QB position is the only thing that wins games. The position needs help on every team genius! From the coaching to the WRs to the OL. If one piece is bad, then any QB would falter, no matter what you think.

      • zito the man says:

Are you for really ? You like you’re A-Hole and a troll..

      • . says:

Alex will never love you the way you want him to.

And get over his sexual fixations as well.

Alex will never love you the way you want him to.

        Oh look, an ALEXCUSE.

He is a curse. The sooner Harbaugh realizes it and waives his punk ass, the better.

What does . provide/bring to the blog of a constructive nature?

    • 49ers4life says:

Grant, can you tell us how the backup quarterbacks looked today?

    • MidWestNiner says:

Did anybody say wait until the season starts?

    • neal says:

      Manningham going to miss Eli.

    • MidWestNiner says:

I’m going to wait until the QB play actually matters. To show your fangs because of onr TC session is just pitiful.

  20. TheGhostofErickson says:

49ers.com Training Camp reports that it was Patrick Willis, not Bowman that stripped KW. Who should we believe?

    • ATL9er says:

49ers.com also reported Patrick Willis being the person who stripped KW. NB is a beast at linebacker though.

    • msclemons67 says:

Patrick Willis is the new Ray Lewis. Minus the stabbing murders.

I can’t wait to see this defense in the first exhibition game. Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, Carlos Rogers, Ray McDonald; heck I should just name all 11 starters. These guys have the potential to be like the 85 Bears or the 00 Ravens.

On a related and somewhat sad note – Jahvid Best still hasn’t recovered from the lick Bowman delivered. Best went on the PUP list today.

  21. domingo says:

Great to hear that A J Jenkins looked good.

  22. Jack Hammer says:

Great to hear about Manningham and Jenkins. Other reports are also positive about Kyle Willams’ performance today. Are going to need everything we can get from those guys.

  23. NinersRoc says:

I said it during the OTAs…The only way Ted Ginn makes the team is if Kyle Williams gets cut (Owusu will make the team, especially if he can handle any return duties). The niners will keep 6 WRs, they will be: Moss, Manningham, Crabtree, Jenkins, Owusu, & TBD. It seems that once contact begins, Williams can’t keep his head straight, whereas Ginn can’t stay healthy (or catch the ball). The better some of the other guys (Cox, Owusu, Jenkins) do with return duties, the more expendable Ginn is.

The problem is that K-Dub can catch, but he can’t hold onto the ball afterwards; however, Ginn can’t catch so he never has the chance to fumble. Those two combined might make one killin’ WR.

I’ll say this, unless K-dub figures out how to hold onto the ball in the next couple weeks, he’s gone…even if Teddy Ginn manages to make the team, he doesn’t get a new contract next year, unless he suddenly gets sticky hands. That’s been the beauty of this offseason, we have so much depth at WR that even if we lost Ginn AND K-Dub, we have enough talented guys that we could make due without them.

  24. The Pimp Slapper says:

Have they scheduled your lobotomy yet, Neal? Puberty’s tough isn’t it? Like attention? Kyle Williams will not only make the team at WR, but he’ll have an excellent season.

    • Neal says:

Anybody named Pimple Slapper, and is talking to me about Puberty? KW won’t be making the team and will be fumbling the ball for the Sabercats.

  25. Medic One says:

It sounds like the O-line is still struggling to protect Alex Smith. It also sounds like the secondary is struggling. Let’s hope the pads are the great equalizers

  26. BOS49er says:

Good to see that AJJ is comming around and NB shoring up the middle of our d. I hope KW makes the team, he is a good slot WR he just needs to get the ball security part down.
The MC injury really hurts. Even though more players get extra reps id rather have MC taking those reps and building a better raport with AS. Crab started slowly cuz of injuries last year (like he has every year since getting drafted) and I was very optimistic that after a healty offseason in which every report had him looking good. I know we are a run oriented team but we need WR who will consistently win their matchups vs good corners and that requires precision that u can only get through practice.

  27. JDizzle says:

KW had a good season last year. Take away the fumbles from the championship game and you have an excellent slot receiver. So maybe he shouldn’t be doing punt returns, so what. It’s a hard lesson to be learned, but he’s still a very good receiver. Whoever says KW sucks as a receiver, doesn’t know jack.

    • AES* says:

      Totally agree JDizzle.

KW would make it on his WR merits alone. But having said that, that would likely be the case for any other team except the 49ers.

Harbaugh seems to have a penchent for keeping players who offer more than one skill. The problem for KW would be that if L.James, K.Hunt or AJ.Jenkins can show a marked improvement over KW in the Return game, KW’ days may be numbered.

The other concern I have about KW is that as a slot WR he is more susceptible to injury because of catching over the middle.

I would love KW to make the roster, but it would not surprise me if he becomes a numbers casualty.

      • JDizzle says:

Good point. I really hope he can excel in other areas so we can keep him if that is the case.

  28. Brotha Tuna says:

We here are all looking for as much info as we can get. Grant provides detailed reports and sometimes some insight on these practices. It’s up to us to remember that it’s still only no-pads practices and try not to panic over a couple of imperfections on the freaking 2nd practice!
PS. Some regulars on this site might want to re-read their posted comments and realize how deeply embarrassed they should be of their tantrums and tirades; it’s mind boggling.

  29. Neal says:

The problem with Ted Ginn is that he sucks as a receiver but a great return guy, in a perfect world with the Niners the return man would be a second string corner back, so we could have 6 very good receivers, instead of 5.

    • MidWestNiner says:

I agree Neal. That’s the main reason I’m not sure if Ginn will be on the roster come the start of the season, especially if someone other than him stands out in the return game. That said, it’s looking more likely he will be on the team when the season starts, and I’ll have to say that the team they play against in the their first game rules. One word: MOUTHWASH!

    • BOS49er says:

      Neal
In the old 9er days I would have agreed with you about keeping 6 WR instead of 5. I still think they will keep 6 this year because they want TG but need to keep AJJ on the roster.

However for this team I think having 6 very good receivers is unnecesary. Here is why:
The 9ers rarely had 4 WR on the field at the same time last year and even with the added weapons they are unlikely to spread it out and let it rip.
VD or FG will always be on the field (in not FG then another rb) leaving only 3 spots for WR
Unles they have specific roles for the WR (ie: RM in the red zone, MM on 3rd down etc.) the 4th 5th and 6th WR will just be sitting on the sideline and not contributing.
If we went 5 wide on every play and threw often then we would need 6 quality WR, as it stands now FG VD DW Lamike KH are better targets than our 4th WR

      • Jack Hammer says:

“Unless they have specific roles for the WR, the 4th 5th and 6th WR will just be sitting on the sideline and not contributing.”

Kinda like Ian Williams all last year. There is a very good chance they keep 6, then dress 5 on game day.
There would be 4 WR’s, Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, Williams. Ginn would be the return specialist.

      • undercenter says:

Not sure if we keep 5 or 6 receivers. For sure Crabs, Moss,Mann, and Jenkins make the team. If we keep Ginn we will have 6 receivers on the team. Really there is only one open spot for Williams and others to make the team. I think Ginn is going to have his hands full making the team. LaMic just might give him a run for his money. Have to watch how it plays out, going to be interesting.

  30. BOS49er says:

    Jack
Barring injuries thats how I see it playing out. AJJ can spend a “redshirt year” and not bristle at the lack of playing time the way other more established WR would.

  31. barleyfreak says:

Not worried about the Moss droppings.

Scatologically speaking, I agree with you. I also agree with those saying we’ll keep 6 WR’s, and suit up 5. Williams will be one of those 6.

  32. Razoreater says:

Ted Ginn Jr will make the team 100% positive.

    • Medic One says:

With the focus the team is putting on guys to play two ways as has been mentioned above, the addition of Lamichael James, and the depth at other positions, I don’t see Ginn making the team.
I don’t think any other NFL team picks him up either though because roster spots are too valuable to hold for a KR.

      • Ninernut says:

I agree. Here is my list of cuts:

        Bakhtiari, Eric LB
        Beeler, Chase C*
        Bell, Cameron FB*
        Brown, Kourtnei
        Cartwright, Rock
        Celek, Garrett
        Dixon, Anthony
        Hampton, Jewel
        Hannula, Ben
        Holland, Joe
        Jerod-Eddie, Tony
        Mosley, Anthony
        Netter, Al
        Owusu, Chris
        Palmer, Nathan
        Purvis, Deante’
        Robinson, Trenton
        Tavecchio, Giorgio
        Tolzien, Scott

  33. oneniner says:

    …just thoughts…..I agree with….

….”My biggest fear for this 49ers team is that they try to do too much on offense, such as trying to expand what they ask of Smith, and that that leads them down a disastrous path. “…….

….”Alex Smith may not be an elite quarterback, but he’s doing essential quarterback things like calling the proper audibles in the running game, converting third downs, and avoiding mistakes.

A key reason for this is that Harbaugh has made the passing game easier for Smith, particularly when it comes to beating the blitz. Of course, coaches often say they are “simplifying the playbook,” but Harbaugh has been able to do it coherently and in a way that actually aids his quarterback’s ability to succeed rather than simply removes options.”…..

…..”That is what Smith needs to continue to do, not start throwing it 25 to 30 times a game out of the shotgun spread.

I respect the hell out of Jerry Rice. He’s one of the greatest to ever play the game. But on this, he is dead wrong. “……

    • DS94everXev says:

      oneniner

For me, I only really pay attention to ex-pros when they talk about players who play their old position.

So, JM has more say when it comes to QB’s than JR has. And JR has more say about WR’s than JM has.

When they speak of other positions they don’t sound any better than reporters/fans do.

    • Ninernut says:

I think the problem here is what they expect from Alex Smith. Alex Smith plays 7 yards and shorter and excels at it.
The organization goes out and brings in all these deep threats. Moss. Manningham. They didn’t answer protection issues. I think they picked up Jacobs to be physical inside for an ailing Gore, while James and Hunter lack the size. It should also free up VD to go down the field, but still not playing into Alex Smith’s strengths.
Instead, they brought in another QB who is a deep threat, but can’t complete the short pass.
I think this is a recipe for diaster on the offensive side of the ball.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ninernut

AS seemed to play fine deep in the playoffs with VD. 3 of 4 TD’s and several more passes (last NO drive I’m thinking) were deep passes. All were perfectly thrown with good coverage by the CB. Especially the sideline pass against NY. The 1 non-deep TD pass was perfect.

Perhaps what happened was VD was the real threat, and AS looks fine with him. We get the other players to get at WR what we have at TE with VD.

Also, those weapons will make teams think twice about crowding the LOS. Which put our OL at a dis-advantage to start with. While many here blame OL out-right, I think they are better than what they showed.

    • Medic One says:

      One Niner said:
….”Alex Smith may not be an elite quarterback, but he’s doing essential quarterback things like calling the proper audibles in the running game, converting third downs, and avoiding mistakes.

Umm….Alex Smith didn’t convert 3rd downs… That was part of the offense’s problem. I think a receiver is in a good place to critique a Qb when that HOF receiver is Jerry Rice and has played for Offensive minds like Mike Holmgren, Bill Walsh, George Seifert, and with HOF QBs like Joe Montana and Steve Young.
Receivers in the NFL don’t just run on a dotted line and play catch. They have to understand the offense, the mechanics of the throw that affect spin and trajectory, as well as understanding defenses and reading them just like a QB does.
So, I’d venture a guess in saying that Jerry Rice has the resume to allow him to critique Alex Smith on a professional level that hold much more merit than any fan/reporter.

      • DS94everXev says:

I’ve seen Michael Irvin say lots of stupid/wrong things regarding QB’s. He is a HOF WR.

I’ve heard Terry Bradshaw say thing not so unlike JM. Things that HOF WR’s don’t say. And at this point JR has not proven himself to be an expert analyst. Of WR’s, yes. Of anything else, No.

      • Prime Time says:

No more comparison please to yester years and former players. It was a different game back then and the players played in a completely different brand of football.

    • oneniner says:

..@medic….”They have to understand the offense….”….How does JR understand what the offense is if he is not on the team?

……You giving too much credit to WRs, ….I understand JR is different but still rather you say “JR” instead of using “Receivers” as a cover to support your opinion……

    • . says:

Jerry Rice is right, Alex has been wearing diapers while trying to ride a bike with training wheels.

When are you people going to realize that restricting the playbook to keep Alex happy is HURTING THE TEAM?

Alex sucks, there’s no two ways about it and all you little man-crushers are waay past delusional. Well, maybe we’ll get lucky and that career-ending injury will befall Alice on his first snap of a preseason game.

Wow, wishing upon a career ending injury, bad karma vato

      • . says:

        Don’t believe in karma.

THe 49ers HAVE to get rid of Alex and it seems the only way they will if for him to be injured in a career-ending way, so that’s what I hope for.

Anyone who expects Alex to be any different, more accurate, with better field vision, is smoking the stuff the growers usually keep for themselves.

This team is doomed as long as Smith wears the uniform.

whatever you say zero, of course you dont believe in karma, your a nothing and nothing is probably happening in your life if your wishing ill will against others holmes

Hey Dot, are you Greg Robinson? What a miserable mess you are wishing injury on anyone.

Do me a favor and let me know when you pass first-grade reading and writing. Jesus f****, are you stupid.

Nope. I’d just as soon Alex be waived but if injury is what it takes, so be it.

TB our GM reports on SFGATE that the injury to MC is not at all a foot injury.

He would not confirm it to be an ankle injury, but nothing else has been suggested either.

      When 23J said
“If AS is back on this team next year I will not post here again” and then got called welcher what he meant was : I will come back anonymously as the (.) and continue to spew hate and wish bad things on a team that im suposedly a fan of.
If only the period (explains the crabbines and the mood swings) could get a carrer ending injury and leave this blog.

        BOS,

As hyperbolic as 23J is/was, he never stooped to the level of our buddy dot. Actually dot has been on this blog before with other screen names – posting the same inanities, but is definitely not 23J. Look for him on other sites under the name Telecat.

“No more comparison please to yester years and former players. It was a different game back then and the players played in a completely different brand of football.”

Are you promoting the idea that this team is better than the 49er Super Bowl team of the past because it’s a “completely brand of football?”

If you are, then you’re analysis falls as short as DS’ comment that Jerry Rice is not qualified to analyze QB.’ I may break a rib at laughing at that one!

Whew! You guys sure know how to bring the laughter to this blog (hahaha)!

    • Neal says:

DS comparing AS to JM all of the time and since she disagrees that JR is not a good commentator for QB’s. DS knows QB’s, I still can’t get mind over what she said in a earlier blog. That Dan Marino and Dan Fouts are not elite QB’s because they never won a Super Bowl. Then she says it not all up to the QB to win games, ofcourse supporting her man love of AS.

      • Neal says:

Correction, She agrees that JR is not a good commentator for QB’s. Ofcourse Steve Young was also excited if Manning would come to the Niners too, but ofcourse AS would rather have his man crush of AS.

      • Prime Time says:

Yeah about as dumb as you thinking that the NFL supplemental draft was still to come and that the NFL awarded its Executive of the Year through Profootball Weekly? Hhahahahhahahah! Dummy!!!!

Hey Fitzbob, have your son proof read your comments, you obviously can’t spell, think, or put together a meaningful thought!

    • Prime Time says:

No AES that is not what I was promoting and frankly if you don’t get it, then I’m sorry your slow or unable to decipher the reason comparing players of the past to the present makes no sense in many instances.
Keep flip flopping though, your a scholar when it comes to saying one thing then turning it 180 degrees the other.

      AES
Sorry. My fault. Didn’t connect the dots enough for you.

JM says completely different things from JR about AS. Between the 2, JR’s opinion is microscpic next to JM’s regarding AS. Add similar statements from T. Bradshaw, and the winners of 8 Super Bowls have sway regarding analyzing QB’s with me.
