Live blog: 49ers vs. Chargers

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the 49ers’ final preseason game. I’ll be updating this frequently with analysis from the press box.

5:28 I just found all the preseason stats. If you were wondering, here’s how the four QBs have fared so far:

Alex Smith: 13 for 19 (68.4%), 7.1 yards per attempt, 123.6 QB rating
Colin Kaepernick: 13 for 21 (61.9%), 6.6 yards per attempt, 81.3 QB rating
Josh Johnson: 6 for 11 (54.5%), 8.6 yards per attempt, 83.1 QB rating
Scott Tolzien: 15 for 26 (57.7%), 4.7 yards per attempt, 53.8 QB rating
BONUS: Aaron Rodgers: 20 for 41, 5.6 yards per attempt, 53.8 QB rating.

5:55 49ers preseason 3rd down conversion rate: 35% (Seattle is converting and NFC-best 48.8%).
49ers preseason red zone TD percentage: 12.5.

6:13 The 49ers changed Demarcus Dobbs’ jersey number from 40 to 83, for what it’s worth.

6:25 These 49ers are not suited up: Ted Ginn Jr. (ankle), Demarcus Dobbs (calf), Brandon Jacobs (knee), Mario Manningham, Parys Haralson.

6:43 Nathan Palmer fact: His favorite singer ever is Luther Vandross, but his favorite singer right now is Tank.

6:59 49ers not wearing helmets: Frank Gore, Tarell Brown, Isaac Sopoaga, Larry Grant, Patrick Willis, Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, Kyle Williams. I assume these guys won’t play.

7:04 Alex Smith is wearing his helmet and throwing. It looks like he’ll play.

7:05 Vernon Davis also has his helmet on.

7:07 LaMichael James returns the opening kickoff 39 yards to the SF 34.

7:12 Alex Smith played the first five snaps and handed the ball off five times, then Colin Kaepernick came in and immediately threw deep to Garrett Celek, and Atari Bigby batted the ball away. If Kaepernick had thrown it one-yard deeper it probably would have been complete.

7:17 7-0 49ers. Anthony Dixon punched it in from a yard out. He rushed 3 times for 20 yards on the drive – he’s probably going to make the team. Kendall Hunter rushed 4 times for 23 yards – he’d be in the running for NFL preseason MVP if there was such a thing.

7:20 Kaepernick made one bad pass and one good pass on that drive. The bad was a bouncer to A.J. Jenkins at the line of scrimmage. The good was against Kaepernick’s body as he rolled left and hit Bruce Miller for a 9-yard gain.

7:22 The throw-while-rolling-to-the-left has got to be Kaepernick’s signature. He’s great at that.

7:25 C.J. Spillman gave up a 20-yard completion to Antonio Gates, but Spillman stripped the ball immediately. Trenton Robinson picked it up and ran it to the SD 32.

7:26 On the very next play Kaepernick threw a perfect deep pass as he was getting hit in the pocket, but Brett Swain let the ball fly through his hands.

7:26 And then on the next play, Kaepernick rolled to his left and threw a 25-yard laser to Delanie Walker for a touchdown. The Chargers are challenging the play to see if Walker went out of bounds at the goal line.

7:29 It’s a touchdown. 14-0 Niners.

7:39 Why is Philip Rivers playing? He’s tearing up the Niners second-team defense on this drive, but he just got called for intentional grounding. He rolled to his left and tried to throw with his left hand, but the ball fell in front of the line of scrimmage. He’s no Colin Kaepernick.

7:40 Two plays later, Rivers tried to force a pass over the middle and Darcel McBath intercepted it.

7:44 On 2nd and 3, Kaepernick stepped up in the pocket and threw a pass right to Takeo Spikes, which he dropped. That should have been an interception.

7:48 Colin Jones should not make the team over Darcel McBath. Jones missed a point-blank tackle a minute ago on a punt return, while McBath has played well at safety the last two games.

7:58 The Niners take over on downs at their 38 yard line after a Jim Harbaugh challenge.

8:04 21-0 49ers. Kaepernick just threw a 12-yard TD pass to a wide open A.J. Jenkins in the back of the end zone. But that wasn’t Kaepernick’s best pass of the drive. He threw a perfect 37-yard touch pass to Garrett Celek a few plays prior.

8:06 Michael Person got called for a holding penalty on the drive. He’s had a bad preseason. Al Netter should get his shot at left tackle.

8:15 Tavares Gooden is having a terrific game. He stopped a run after 2 yards and then on the next play he sacked Charlie Whitehurst. The Chargers punt, and the Niners take over at their own 3.

8:21 Kaepernick just converted a third-and-2 by rolling right and scrambling for 7 yards. He looks like the fastest man on the field right now.

8:31 Kaepernick’s first half stats: 12 for 18, 158 yards (8.8 per attempt), 131.2 QB rating.

8:47 Tolzien time.

8:54 First play, Tolzien connected with A.J. Jenkins for a 24-yard gain. The Chargers backups cannot keep up with Jenkins. After that play, Tolzien missed two passes and the Niners punted.

8:56 LaMichael James calls for a fair catch on a punt, but he bobbles it and almost fumbles it. Kyle Williams is more sure-handed at this point.

8:59 Josh Johnson just threw a TD pass on his first snap of the game. He threw to Nathan Palmer in the flat, Palmer made one guy miss and then he ran 51-yards for a TD. 28-0 Niners. The Chargers backup cornerbacks are bad.

Under throw the deep ball Josh! Lol. Go Niners, no injuries.

      P,

      That is a bad man!

    • brotha Tuna says:

      Yeah, Cowboy
Cris Carter was talking about Jerry Rice and saying that one factor in Joe’s & Steve’s late comeback wins was that due to mega-conditioning Jerry had better legs in the 4th Quarter than the defenders covering him. So maybe that’s part of Justin’s deal, because he’s still a madman in the 4th. I know he pushes weights, looks like he’s all-in on the cardio too. Case in point: the strip in Philly Game.

      • Ninermd says:

I can run faster than Chuck Norris. WHEEEW

      • Chris says:

I don’t know if Justin Smith is pushing the weights. I think he might just be eating them as big as he is.

      • DS94everXev says:

        No doubt brotha.

But I can believe a WR has an easier time staying fresh than a DL who is pushing and shoving 300+lb guys while chasing guys who run a 4.5 40

Makes what JS do so much more impressive.

  3. Fabio says:

Can’t wait to check out the check-down king in action.

  4. Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, do you know what the plan is for the starters? One quarter?

  5. Neal says:

Kaep is the future of this team and the future is now

  6. AES* says:

If the Org has already made a decision (releasing him) on JJ, they may have him play the most at QB with the hope he can show enough to latch on with another team.

The same may be true of players like R.Cartwright, A.Dixon, and T.Brock who believe are on the bubble.

    • undercenter says:

I would like to see LaMic get lots or work too. We havnt seen much of him.

      • Ninermd says:

Im with you Under. I liked this kid in college and Im waiting to see him with some more touches. He’s the future!

      • undercenter says:

MD I totally agree but I think he is going to have to put on some muscle to be effective.

    • Latino Heat says:

  9. mike says:

Grant – What about the statistics for 3rd down conversions and success in the Red Zone because those were two areas where off-season comments by Harbaugh suggested a need for improvement?

    • Grant Cohn says:

3rd down conversions: 35% (Seattle is converting and NFC-best 48.8%).
      Red zone: 12.5%.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Preseason?!!

      • Grant Cohn says:

Don’t make too much of the stats. Just look at what Aaron Rodgers has done.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Grant

“Don’t make too much of the stats.”

The same should be applied to the regular season as well. Wins are what matter.

      • Fabio says:

Yeah keep spewing BS, DS. If wins are all that you can gauge by, then we should’ve stayed with our starting wideouts, right? Why not seek out something better? You keep dreaming up excuses for your pathetic, average at best QB.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Fabio

You seem very tense. Your latest erection drug ain’t working?
And who is BS? Stop calling yourself bad names. You lack self-confidence by doing so

About 10lb over since I blew my knees out and cannot run. These days it’s the Harley, the Martin D-18 and going to the range with the Mosin Nagants. But I work hard enough around the house and watch the rest of my diet to enjoy the better things. Root beer has 170 calories, I can live with that… -L-

  12. I.P. Daily says:

There’s a great and engaging interview with the coach over on CSN. The interviewer was top notch and Harbaugh was in good spirits…

  13. Chris says:

For all of our out of area niner fans who are frantically looking on the web for streaming video, if you google first row sports, its all free.
I hate NFL network here in Mesa. The game won’t be aired until midnight. Hope this helps anyone who needs it.

  14. AES* says:

Hahahaha! Love it MD! One of my favorite Eddie Murphy movies.
Hey MD, but don’t forget; “That boy is good!” “Good and terrible!” (lol).

  15. Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, has the great LC made his press box debut? BTW, has LC been to any of the pressers in the preseason? I remember reading LC a few weeks ago regarding the more “pointed questions” he would ask JH. LC and JH had a really good one on one interview last year just before the 9er season. Didn’t they bond? LC had a great article and JH was informative (at least at that time).

    • Grant Cohn says:

LC is in the building. He’s been far away from all areas of Ninerland this offseason, including the pressers, but now he’s back. As far as the bonding – I don’t think so.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“As far as the bonding – I don’t think so.”

LOL. JH needs to “break bread” with the media. ASAP.

  16. DS94everXev says:

If we don’t see a lot of JJ, I’ll be wondering why we didn’t cut him earlier.

I would have liked to see a lot of CK with the other starters this pre-season going against a lot of starting defenders. If he comes in this year, he’ll need as much time against top teams, not backups.

  17. Bayareafanatic says:

They just flashed to Aaron Rogers on draft day. They asked him how badly he felt that the Niners didn’t draft him. He said, ” not as bad as Niner fans will feel one day that they didn’t draft me”.

    What a prophecy!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

The 9er blew it! Blame that on MN. Yes Bay, not on AS!! LOL Bbbwwwahhhhaaaa!!!

    • Neal says:

      hahah Bay You Hater!!

    • Fabio says:

He was right. I couldn’t feel any worse this time of year. We almost got rid of the blasé QB we drafted in 2005 this offseason, but somehow he wrangled his way back in. Aaron is looking like a boss these days.

  18. iTeo says:

Is the game on local TV ?

  19. Bayareafanatic says:

    Wrong. Direct TV channel 44

  20. undercenter says:

    Good we are running outside

  21. Hoferfan67 says:

Bad pass by CK. If he led the receiver better it was a TD.

  22. Bayareafanatic says:

    Love how Kaep attacks.

  23. Hoferfan67 says:

    ADix makes the team!!!

  24. tkamB says:

Dixon needs to learn how to stay on his feet, I feel like every time he breaks through a hole hes off balance.

  25. Hoferfan67 says:

He threw it at his feet! Come on Kaep!!!

  26. Matt says:

How does Dixon trip over his own feet in the open field. Come on. You aren’t running against starters.

  27. Hoferfan67 says:

CK definitely throws better outside of the pocket. Needs to work on his pocket passing.

  28. undercenter says:

    WTG Dixon

  29. iTeo says:

    very impressive drive.

  30. Rc says:

    That’s physical with and F!

  31. Matt says:

    Missed tackle count. Culliver 2

  32. undercenter says:

    Yes Walker nice throw CK

  33. tkamB says:

That was a good block by James.

  34. Shoup says:

Wow, CK is looking great tonight. It’s nice to see him developing.

  35. Matt says:

I am not a Kaepernick fan at all, but boy he looks like the starter tonight.

  36. ribico says:

    Beautiful, Kaep!

  37. msclemons67 says:

This is against the Chargers #1 defense. Pretty damned good CK7!

  38. Adam707 says:

What’s impressed me most so far, LaMichael James blocking.

    • undercenter says:

Good to see that, cant be a running back unless you can block, it was my only worry about James.

  39. Jack Hammer says:

Interesting how once Kaepernick comes in the ball all of a sudden goes downfield. It’s happened all preseason and again tonight.

  40. Shoup says:

I think his most impressive throw of the night however was the one that Swain missed. That was a great throw from a collapsing pocket.

  41. I.P. Daily says:

Colin throws fine from the pocket. Give the guy a hundred throws in real games and he’ll be super…

  42. Shoup says:

So Far the guys that have looked great are Kap., the Oline, and Hunter.
Dixon, James both look really good but not so much as the above.
Walker is about to be in the great catagory.

But once more our Defensive secondary looks like its going to give up a lot plays.

  43. JPN001 says:

This is the kind of stuff we saw Kaep do for four years here in Reno. He can do some amazing things. I still have concerns about his throwing motion as a NFL QB, but never doubt that he can make plays happen out of what looks to be nothing.

  44. DS94everXev says:

Spillman making great play. DW getting another.

We started the preseason with a TD with our first team, and end it with our 1st tea getting a TD.

  45. msclemons67 says:

The D Line just isn’t the same when Justin isn’t in there.

  46. tkamB says:

    Lol Harbaugh.

  47. tkamB says:

Can’t believe these refs are going to be doing the real games…

  48. ribico says:

Rivers picking up where he left off from last season.

  49. undercenter says:

Lot of football for the first quater

  50. Hoferfan67 says:

Great pocket presence by CK – should have been a pick. Come on Ck!

  51. Bayareafanatic says:

    Convert baby

  52. Adam707 says:

Our backup D able to stop a first team offense. Interesting

  53. DS94everXev says:

Has Culliver looked good in games this pre-season? He keeps getting beat.

  54. I.P. Daily says:

Everyone looks good. Lot of players will be trading reda and gold for other colors this Saturday…

    • Hoferfan67 says:

They do look good. SD doesn’t seem ready to play. The only weakness is CK being able to pass from the pocket but I’m sure he’ll get better.

      • Grant Cohn says:

You’ve got to give him credit for his deep pass to Swain. That was a good pass from the pocket. He took a hit, too.

      • msclemons67 says:

CK7 threatens the Precious… destroy him we must!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Reading the blog tonight, CK = Precious. Call it straight! He is an excellent athlete but he can’t throw from the pocket. He throws better on the run than from the pocket. He needs to do both well.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Grant

Swain should have had it. But CK threw that ball with a lot of velocity. Hard to make the fingertip catch as a result. Would help if CK had more touch there.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Yet another deep ball by CK. The offense plays at a different speed with him in the game.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“The offense plays at a different speed with him in the game.”

Calling it straight Jack or is their an agenda? This is the number 2/3s.

      • Jack Hammer says:

What’s that Hofer? Call it straight? LoL!

It might be the 2-3rd stringers but the pace of the offense picks up with him in the game.

  55. msclemons67 says:

I know it’s the #2s but it’s so weird to see a team run the ball against the 49ers.

  56. DS94everXev says:

    Our D making plays.

That is what happens when you pass. Get yards on us, but you’ll turn it over. Passing inherently foes. We saw 1 Int and 1 fumble after the catch. Happens more than fumbles off of RB runs.

  57. tkamB says:

Looks like Cam Johnson got held again on that play.

  58. I.P. Daily says:

Pass rush is still hit or miss…

  59. msclemons67 says:

Whoa – thought Rivers had completely fallen off the truck and then realized it was Whitehurst.

For Whitehurst that was actually a good throw.

  60. Coffee's for closers says:

Can you believe the ‘Chickens gave up a third rounder for this guy only to let him walk back to the Chargers for free a couple years later in free agency. I think the Seattle GM is one of the worst in the business.

  61. msclemons67 says:

So that looks like a catch and fumble to me but if they rule it incomplete I won’t complain.

  62. I.P. Daily says:

Okay, anyone else say his release is too slow or he cannot throw from the pocket? Yeah, right…

    • Hoferfan67 says:

That was a very good pass but there was no pressure. Let’s see how he does on a consistent basis. But yes nice pass.

      • I.P. Daily says:

        Blah-blah…

      • Fabio says:

What?? Give him 6 more years Hofer before you even start to comment on his play.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Don’t wet yourself. It’s a preseason game with the #2/3s. Cool your jets. He’s having a good game, but keep it in perspective. Jeez!

      • Fabio says:

Read my message jerk. I’m not saying he’s the next Steve Young. Just trying to put your b.s. low expectations of Alex Smith in perspective.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Fab, CK is a great prospect. He’s not starting yet. He hasn’t won any regular season games or playoff games. Period.

  63. Coffee's for closers says:

For the first time that I’ve seen Kaep is putting some nice touch on his passes. Great to see.

  64. Bayareafanatic says:

    Yes!!!!!!

  65. undercenter says:

    Very impressive.

  66. Fabio says:

Nice to see Kap buy more time on a rollout and not hit the chain gang in the back of the head. TD Kap to AJ.

    • Neal says:

I can see it now, when AS struggles the fans will be yelling We want Kaep!! We want Kaep!! Hell the fans did it for David Carr, it is going to happen, bank it, count on it and we will celebrate. !! AS lovers get used to it, it’s going to happen.

  67. I.P. Daily says:

Wow! Colin has such a bad delivery. His touch sucks… har-de-har-har.

Guy is a monster, he’ll be starting sometime this year.

  68. Coffee's for closers says:

Who knew all you needed to do to make Kaep look good is play him against guys who wont be employed in 24 hours.

    • msclemons67 says:

The 1st two drives were against the Chargers 1st team.

    • AES* says:

You’re right. They certainly won’t be employed after being shredded by CK7!

    • DS94everXev says:

      coffee

Uncalled for man. CK can’t do anything about the quality of players opposing HC’s put out there.

He can only play well given what he played against. And he is.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Geez you’d think I called his momma fat. Relax it was only a joke. Unnecessarily defend people much?

      • AES* says:

Soooo DS, can you possibly pull yourself to say that another QB besides AS is having a good game?
Remember DS, it’s all about the TEAM (lol).

      • DS94everXev says:

        coffee

His mamma aint a Niner. And yes. If the players aren’t jerks, I’ll defend them all.

You’re right DS. “CK can’t do anything about the quality of players opposing HC’ put out there”.

Except maybe eh, look like a world-beater!

Nice way to show some good vibes for other players good fortune beside AS!

“ALL IN” (for ALL 49ers players!)
        Real fans rejoice!

      • DS94everXev says:

        AES

They need to do an experiment to see if some people who cut/paste lose their short/long term memory.

Where were you all last year regarding CK/ST?

That’s right. You’re new to this team concept. I’ve had it since I was a child.

Learn to read will ya. I’ve talked about ST since the final preseason game of last year. I know you’re head is dizzy with all your turning back and forth flip-flopping you are getting dizzy. Hopefully you’ll get your balance again. You’re a lot cooler if you do.

  69. msclemons67 says:

  72. tkamB says:

You guys are cute getting excited over 4th game of preseason.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

They are playing 2/3rd stringers. These guys are letting their agenda show. You don’t see FG, MC, VD, etc, etc. Keep things in perspective. This isn’t the SB or even a playoff game. lol

  73. I.P. Daily says:

I’m excited because I’m watching guys do everything they can to stay in the NFL…

  74. I.P. Daily says:

Cool blitz, first trick play of the game for the D…

  75. DS94everXev says:

AJ looking really good. He may be a starter sooner than 2013. Great seperation/hands/acceleration. Decent blocking. Looks better than any other.

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Naw, he’s an F, remember? -L- It’s all good…

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Who is ‘Captain Checkdown?”

    • Scooter_McG says:

Don’t read too much into how he looks in a pre-season game – he still probably won’t be ready to contribute too much this year – but he sure is showing you shouldn’t write someone off after just a few practices (or just after being drafted)!

      • Grant Cohn says:

I never wrote him off, just called it a bad pick. Janoris Jenkins is starting right now. We’ll see if the 49ers could use him.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Didn’t mean you Grant, though calling it a bad pick can be seen that way. Just that there has been quite a lot of negative comments about him without giving him a chance.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I was grading Baalke more than I was grading Jenkins. Jenkins could turn out to be a fine receiver. He reminds me a bit of Torry Holt – but Holt could make contested catches. I haven’t seen Jenkins do that yet. He’s pretty soft right now.

  76. Bayareafanatic says:

    Move the chains Kaep.. Nice.

  77. Lou says:

Boy, the niners have got some tough choices. so many guys look great tonight who have to get cut this week

I can’t argue that point, you’re right about the hyperbole.
But can you at least try to be happy for another player (CK7) besides AS?

CK7 has opened up a can on the Chargers tonight. Whether 2-3 stringers, it’s still impressive.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      AES,

I agree! CK is having a great game but the hyperbole is ridiculous. MFlynn threw for 400 yds in a regular season game for GB and now he’s a backup in Sea. These people are letting their agendas shine through! lol

      • I.P. Daily says:

        Sour turds…

      • Jack Hammer says:

As are you Hofer ; )

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Sure Jack! Fence sitter? Not so much. Transparent? Yes you are. Barring injury, CK won’t see the field and you know it!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Eh Hofer, Tonight you sound just like you did during Peyton Manning “evaluation” week.

I never said he would replace Smith this year. If you go back and look I told you to relax because your boy will be back next week. He’s the #1. I find it interesting how this “ball control” offense opens up with CK in the game.

We’ll see how Alex looks starting next Sunday.

      • AES* says:

Hofe, AS will have a great year. CK7 is not now, or will not be a threat to AS anytime soon.

No worries, AS will get his. CK7 is having a great game, but AS is the man, period!

Having said that, it’s good to know we have a player like CK on the team.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, CK has played a great game. I don’t like the auto attacks on AS just because CK looks good against backups. For CK, it is a growth progression. He may be the starter next year or in 2014. But why use the CK success tonight to slam AS?

  81. Neal says:

Kaep is much better then Smith now, not saying much but it is true. Where are the Smithers. !!

  82. ribico says:

    bye bye then.

  83. I.P. Daily says:

Guy missed the field goal. Cut him!!!

  84. Jack Hammer says:

    Grant,

Good to see AJ step it up tonight with CK getting it to him. Things look good for the future.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AJ has looked outstanding. He’s been wide open.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I’m not hating – he’s improved. But he didn’t create separation in the end zone – the Chargers created it by running away from him and leaving him alone.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Chargers haven’t played well on D tonight. No pressure and the receivers have been WIDE open. I agree with you. But hey, CK’s on fire! lol

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Grant,

Didn’t mean to imply that you were hating on AJ. Only that it is nice to see a QB get him the ball.

      • Grant Cohn says:

It is good to see. Go A.J.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @Grant
Disagree, he made a heads-up improvisation to get open; he had the savvy to help his QB and make the Defense pay for their mistake. It was proactive, not passively lucky.
On the sideline catch, not rocket science, but he understood the moment, caught and got out. To me he’s starting to look like a WR.

      • Grant Cohn says:

He stood still in the back of the end zone and the Chargers forgot to cover him.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Respectfully, check the tape when you get home. He broke to that spot when they left him, so yes he was standing still when the ball arrived, it wasn’t his route. He uncovered spontaneously.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Ok, but I was staring at him the whole time, and Phil Barber saw the same thing. It was a heads up play, but it wasn’t anything special.
Jenkins is fast and he has good hands. It’s good to see him beating backups – he’s supposed to. I’d like to see him beat a starter and catch a contested pass.

      • undercenter says:

AJ is looking good, ST threw a nice pass

  85. ribico says:

Look at the haters annointing the next niners QB from one half of play. Guys are tooo funnay.

    • I.P. Daily says:

He IS he next Niners QB. He’s showing about 30 percent of what he has. give him some game time and he will be THE NEXT GREAT THING!!! (cue the reverb on my post)

  86. tkamB says:

You obviously don’t love the team if you can’t be happy your team had a 13-3 record and went to the NFC Championship last year because of one player.

  87. ribico says:

Yeah, “new” guy knows all the nicknames.

  88. DS94everXev says:

    Sony

Captain checkdown was just given a new contract. The GM/HC of the year resigned him here. Thought about that?

And no need to checkdown if the WR’s get open. Wanna guess which single position we went after most this year?

Sorry. You likely don’t know. My bad.

  89. oldcoach says:

Kap looks great aj jenkins looks amazing. i’ve been saying since we drafted aj that he was going to be the next john taylor and i think grant should get ahead of the curve and just admit he was wrong tonight

    • Grant Cohn says:

What has he done that’s amazing? 3 catches for 35 yards against backups. The Chargers second-stringers left him alone in the back of the end zone. He was standing still for seconds.

  90. undercenter says:

Couple of things – the running attack was excellent. And at this point we have a good backup. One game isnt a fair enough sample in the pre season.I think Harbaugh finally opened up the game a little bit. Think last Sunday was an embarsement.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, good read. They had the number 1s in for 2 series. My gut tells me they will have some things in the passing game ready to roll for GB.

  91. Bayareafanatic says:

Example of a fan of one player instead of the TEAM. Harbaugh says Kaep hade a huge night. Announcer said Kaep is on fire. Other announcer said his QB rating is over 140.0
Hofer says, he doesn’t throw well from the pocket. Lol

    EXPOSED again lol

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, I commented that he made some good throws from the pocket but he makes better throws on the run. CK has played very well. OI call it straight. He deserves kudos tonight. But why use his success with a beat down on AS? CK has won his #2 status even though some thought he would be behind JJ.

    • Bayareafanatic says:

Just went over the live blog Hofer. Embarrass yourself much? I count five negative comments from you regarding Kaep and he’s playing lights out. WHY?
Maybe next year Smith can go to Kaep to learn how to look and throw down field.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay you and Jordo are in an embarrassment class of your own. Hard to surpass. I won’t go back into the archives to dig up some of the nonsense you’ve posted. Not worth the trouble or the chuckle. I’m sure based on your history, you’ll have plenty of new material to get a laugh from this year.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        Deflect much Hofer?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Bay, just deal in facts.

      • Latino Heat says:

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Yup, mid-season form for both our kickers. But was I the only one wishing neither of our kickers was out there? I guess I can think of two other players who we’d miss as much if we lost them, but these guys? Critical to our success. Why risk an injury to them?

  97. Txtree49er says:

    Grant

Can you start a new page, it seems that this one is not posting in order since you bounced the kitty…

  98. Hoferfan67 says:

    The Charger D looks atrocious.

  99. Lou says:

should they cut tolzein or johnson, or try and keep both?

    • Grant Cohn says:

Barrows thinks they can keep both. Tolzien hasn’t played well since the first game, so maybe he could clear waivers.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Why use an extra spot for a QB when it takes away a ST player? I don’t/can’t see it. But with JH, who knows although he likes players that can play multi positions.

      • Grant Cohn says:

He thinks they can put Tolzien on the practice squad.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

ST is more a development guy which fits a #3.

      • BigP says:

        Josh Johnson may be better.

      • 23jordan says:

Josh Johnson is better than you all think he is.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

They aren’t playing a game that is indicative of a real defense. Every receiver has been open by 5+ yds!!

      • Latino Heat says:

my grandma makes all those throws jj made tonight….where’s my lighter……

      • 23jordan says:

HOFER! You are a pathetic soul. You need to go back and read your posts from this thread. You are pathetic. All you did was try and downplay everything every QB in the game did. Kapernick was lights out. Josh hasn’t let a ball hit the ground. Yet all you have is complaints about their play. You just showed your hand. People think you’re objective. You’re weak. You’re a Smither and your boy is out of here very soon. I hope you leave with him!!!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, pick your battles. The target on your back is big enough. Your a known entity her and a legend in your own mind. lol Stay tuned…

      • Latino Heat says:

        boo hoo….boo hoo hoo hoo……..

      • BigP says:

You guys are sad that you can’t just enjoy the progress of all of the QB’s. CK and Johnson have both played very well tonight and you just throw out an excuse after every good play.
“They aren’t playing a game that is indicative of a real defense.”
I guess that would make Baby Brees’ INT even more egregious then, right?

  100. ribico says:

Where’s Jordo??? A “51 yard” TD pass from his guy.

“They need to do an experiment to see if some people who cut/paste lose their short/long term memory.
You’re a lot cooler if you do.”

    @DS
My TEAM concept is never under question bud. But obviously you are having some real issues seeing another 49er QB having a good game.

But don’t worry DS. AS will be our Starter. As much as I like what CK7 is doing, I don’t believe he’s ready to relieve AS anytime soon.
But I don’t have a problem seeing other 49ers making good.

BTW, where’s your twin Prime? Looks like he called it a night after AS went out . Conspicuously absent isn’t he? (lol)

  105. undercenter says:

Cuts tomorrow are going to be real interesting thats for sure.

  106. AES* says:

Time to put a fork in it!

  107. BigP says:

Looks like Johnson came ready to play, he looks very good.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I think he was pressing in the previous games. He looks more relaxed tonight.

      • 23jordan says:

        Grant,

The cream ALWAYS rises to the top!!!!!!

      • BigP says:

He looked very polished, he throws perfect passes when he is settled down.

      • Grant Cohn says:

He did throw one low pass and Owusu bailed him out. Other than that, he was perfect.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

My first chance to see JJ play. MAN! That kid is FAST!!! And after Kaep’s showing, I’m feeling a LOT better about our backup QBs. Granted, SD didn’t do a lot to challenge our guys tonight, but still…fun to watch.

  108. 23jordan says:

CUT WHO FOR WHAT!!!!!!!!! SCOTT WHO!!!!!!!

  109. Nick says:

Tolzien may have just threw himself off the team
