SANTA CLARA – Ted Ginn Jr. spoke to a group of reporters at his locker Thursday afternoon, and he spoke primarily about his development as a wide receiver. Here’s a transcript.
ME: What excites you about your role in the offense this season?
GINN JR: Just being able to go out and compete and be on the field as a receiver. Competing with my team and keep playing as a group.
Q: Do you like playing special teams?
GINN JR: Yeah, it’s another attribute to who I am.
ME: Do you see yourself as a wide receiver first and a special teamer second?
GINN JR: Yeah. That’s how I’ve been trying to showcase myself as an NFL player.
Q: The depth chart shows four wide receivers – you being one of them. Do you feel like you’ve been given an opportunity this training camp to really show what you bring to the table as a wide receiver.
GINN JR: Yeah, especially coming off the injury and not being able to be at the OTAs. Being able to come in as an older guy in camp and still be considered as a starter is a blessing.
Q: What do you think of your competition?
GINN JR: We’ve got three or four first-round draft picks all on one squad. They’re great guys. We’ll compete and however it turns out, it turns out.
Q: Are you a better wide receiver right now than you’ve ever been?
GINN JR: Yeah. As you get older you start to mature, you start to get wiser. The game is coming to you more and more.

Harbs is building up Ginn’s confidence just as he has done with Alex. Hopefully it will be another successful reclamation project, considering Ginn’s value as a punt returner.
Whooa there cowboy, I’m not sure you can call Alex a successful reclamation project just yet.
Did he not orchestrate a OT playoff comeback last year after years of bad coaching and handling and mediocre years? I think you can deem 2011 as a successful year.
I like your username. Maybe Hyperbole will respond??! lol
in other news…Calvin Johnson is out for the season due to his decision to accept being on the cover of Madden…bad move my friend, bad bad move….i say he is done by week 4…
Smith needs that boost. TG does not, he just appreciates the opportunity to compete at wideout. That is the reason that TG shopped his services in the off season. He wants a chance to play receiver. Hopefully he makes the most of his chance.
I think it has more to do with Ginn being a return man. In other words, he wants Ginn to try really being a return man more then a WR. However, if he does get some production out of Ginn from the WR position, hey, that doesn’t hurt us.
Imagine the team speed on offense if Ginn can display a modicum of consistency as a receiver.
Oh yeah. I totally just used the word modicum.
……My advice to T.Ginn Jr…….
…..”Choose less over more in it. Be satisfied with what you have, even if it is less than what others have. In fact, prefer to have less……”
does he often solicit your advice?
If Ted can make one deep grab in the late Pre-Season and then one or two early in the regular season he can at least set himself up as a clear-out guy. Perhaps a 1st down or two as a slot?
with the exception of injuries, i really do’nt see ted ginn’s receiving skills having alot to do with wether or not the 49ers are successful this season. his return skills maybe. i forsee aj jenkins over taking ginn by midseason
I firmly believe this guy could be our ace in the hole this year. With everyone worrying about Moss, concerned about Manningham and checking Crabs, Ginn has the potential to be igonored and this dude can still fly. He has matured and I believe his upside now is far greater than years of past, especially in this offense 2 years in the running now.
I’m not sure defenses are all that concerned about our receiving corps. Quantity does not trump quality. Our tight ends are great, though.
All that much better!
I hope you’re right JR. This offense has a chance to be methodical AND explosive. That’s badass combination.
I im complete agreement with you this my man. It may take 2-3 weeks to really get it clicking, however it will in time live up to it’s potential. The D can carry the team while we get in sync on O.
I’m liking this receiver corps more and more, but if Boone and Davis fail to shore up pass protection, it won’t matter.
I’m reading alot about Jenkins not making many (or any) 47 man active rosters this season. That’s what the roster math tells me too, but my gut says Harbaugh will showcase Jenkins during the season. Not as a starter, but maybe with special plays or personnel packages. He’s sure getting alot of reps in preseason.
We knew Jenkins has excellent hands and gets out of breaks with speed, but he’s also been getting separation on routes lately. The rest is all learning. The more of the offense he has down, the faster he plays.
Jenkins will be active *sometime* this season. People will get hurt, and he’ll need to at least put in a supporting appearance. He just needs to hit the film and weight room every chance he gets, and be ready when the chance comes.
Hopefully he can push Crabtree and the two of them can solidify the inside slot receiver position. He definately has the speed, he just needs to develop the hands and learn the playbook.
He’s beating 3rd string DB’s.
He is a danger everytime the football is in his hands. His pass catching ability has improved and I look for him to make plays at the WR position.
Razor,
You hit directly on what I was wondering. Where have you seen that his pass catching has improved? It’s what I’m hoping for, but I haven’t seen (or read) anywhere that there’s been a big change. In fact, while reading this whole article, I kept wondering when someone was going to ask, “How can you even presume to be a receiver, when your whole career has been filled with dropped passes?” I get that the guy’s probably our best KR/PR, and he sure pulled the first Seattle game out of the fire for us last year. But speed at WR ain’t gonna help much, if the D knows he can’t catch!
Has Ginn really made any solid improvements?
Whatever helps the team
