Training camp report: Tuesday, the not-so-good – Two top picks fumble

SANTA CLARA – First-round pick A.J. Jenkins, who had been making progress the past few weeks, took a step back today. He bobbled an easy pass, dropped another one and fumbled – he was running a reverse and as he got to the sideline it seemed like he expected cornerback Tarell Brown to tag him, but Brown punched the ball out of his hands instead.

Second-round pick LaMichael James, who has not stood out in practice this training camp, fumbled on the last play of practice, but he landed on the ball immediately.

Undrafted rookie cornerback Deante Purvis had a rough practice. Every other play he was on the field, it seemed like the quarterbacks targeted the receiver he was covering. Purvis is athletic, but he’s been slow to react to receivers’ cuts the past week and as a result he’s been getting picked on.

  1. Fred P Soft says:

thank god we have Alex Smith and Scott Tolzien. Tolzien is out playin Keapernik hands down. Go back and watch the preseason game. Scott is gonna be an awesome QB very soon and Colin will be a career backup. mark my words.

    • Razoreater says:

Sure I’ll mark them, with the initials DA.

    • Last of a dying breed49 says:

That is a dumb statement… Both Kaep and Scott playd well last game and apparently, Harbaugh disagrees with you.. Kaep has been performing at a high level during practice and thats half the battle… Maybe you’d like Kaep more if he was outplaying 3-4 stringers who have no chance of making an NFL roster…

    • GV says:

Thanks Coach. Glad to get your take on things.

      • mavin 1 says:

CK and Tolzein are two different types of quarterbacks. Could it be that CK is #2 because if you put him in there is a whole different set of plays that become viable? You can’t compare apples and oranges. Both Brady and Vick are great quarterbacks and they are entirely different as to style of play and the the types of plays that they are suited for. You can compare Brady and Brees, the Manning brothers and others that are the same type of quarterback. Each has good points and bad points. To prepare for both Smith and CK will give teams fits. Could that be the reason for what JH has to say to the media?

      • Chris says:

I’d take Brady over Vick 100 out of 100 times. I’d take just about any QB over Vick. Vick hasn’t translated his style into championships, wins, or even a healthy season.
While it’s a wrinkle in the NFL, the NFL has shown that it is quick to adjust and whlie a player might have 1 phenominal year, it’s rarely duplicated in the terms of a mobile qb.

  2. Knowledge says:

You sure you don’t have him confused with the 8 year wonder that is Alex Smith?

  3. Winston Wolf says:

So much specualtion. I’m high on Tolzien as well, but let’s the games tell the tale. I do think that JJ and Kaep are redundant though. I think it’s gonna come down to the best of the two.

    • Jt_oSnowlovan says:

Idiots!!! They’re not cutting CK. you don’t cut a guy you picked in 2nd round who has better measurables than Cam Newton..

      • Chris says:

I am not huge on Cam Newton. You might have had a better argument had you left him out of the equation. When you team is down 30 points in the first half, of course your numbers are going to look great. You are passing against a soft prevent defense. The intensity is out of the defense at that point and they are moving on to the next week’s game.
Had he translated some of those numbers into an actual win, he’d be higher up in my opinion. Now, before you tar and feather me, I do think Cam is an excellent athlete. I just think you are putting too much stock into numbers in a losing effort.

      • f49er says:

        Jt…

        What you just said Brother!

Who are these people who really don’t know the Dynamics of drafting QB’s in the early rounds?

      • Jt_oSnowlovan says:

        @Chris
I believe the measurables comment boosts the argument (4.53 speed and a stronger arm than Newton). Newton’s leadership qualities are off-the-charts, but as you point out, rookie-year success does not a career make…

      • niner fan says:

“better measurables than Cam Newton”?? LOL! ALL THAT MATTERS IS RESULTS. Cam Newton’s rookie season was better than Alex Smith’s entire sad career. And then you’re saying CK has better measurables than Newton. That’s a pretty bold statement, dude.

      • chris says:

@ JT, thanks for clarifying. You’re right in that aspect. I also don’t think they’d cut a second round pick the following year.
I think it’s important for everyone reading these comments to remember we are all on the same team.
There is such a vicious streak here to completely dismantle anyone’s opinion. We’re all 49er Fans for our various reasons. Its great when we can discuss our views, but the name calling and the personal shots just take away from everything that makes football season with your own fans awesome. Just a thought.

  4. highpriest333 says:

Kaepernick hasn’t been making mistakes. That’s why he is ahead on the chart. Every practice recap I read mentions a Tolzien interception. Kaepernick has the ability to generate huge plays with his arm and legs. This allows him to be more patient, because he knows a big play can happen at any time. It allows him to take what the defense gives him.

    • Chris says:

Kaepernick actually is right in hand with ints with the rest of the QB team. Most of the INTs in practice are on the receivers as they are tipped or juggled balls then end up intercepted.

  5. Big niner says:

    when’s the next game?

  6. f49er says:

Bottom Line is “Play On The Field”

And we just have not seen enough Body of Work from either QB to make any Bold Statements. Agreed?

Look there’s 3 more Pre-Season Games left & I hold Judgement until then.

  7. medic one says:

I look forward to seeing JJ play this Sat. I think if he does well, you won’t hear a peep about it being against 3rd stringers and guys not making the team. With 4 years NFL experience, you should be able to shred 3rd stringers.

That being said, I actually think it’s harder in the preseason to play against the 3/4 stringers who are fighting for their lives and their dreams every play to be noticed. The starters aren’t as motivated. We’ll see soon enough.

  8. undercenter says:

Not one comment on the topic. At this point I am not too worried about Jenkins, and I am certainly not worried about LaMic. I am sure others have fumbled the ball during practice. In Harbaugh I believe in, if he says Jenkins is going to be fine I believe him. I already know LaMic is going to be fine, if he can block that is. I understand they are our first two draft picks, expectations are understandably through the roof, give them some time they will perform just fine.

  9. Razoreater says:

    Alex
    Kaepper
    Tolzein

    Gore

    Cartright
    K. Brown

This is my best guess of our 53 man roster.

    • Jt_oSnowlovan says:

They’ll keep both Robinson & Spillman and cut either Brock or Jones to facilitate. Ginn might be on the block too.

      • FDM says:

My main man T. Brock is not getting cut, Robinson going to the practice squad! Spillman is a regualr on ST.
With all the pass happy teams we play, the Niners will go with and need a lot of depth in the secondary.

    • macdaddy says:

way to copy someone elses post and play like its yours

    • Nick Row says:

Bakhtiari is a good story but won’t make the team. Same for Cartwright. Kyle Williams will get pushed hard by Chris Owusu (leading WR last game – for what it’s worth) and Nathan Palmer. Instead of Cartwright, A. Dixon is a better option for the Niners. He’s more versatile (HB, FB, and special teams) and is a different type of back – bigger short yardage buy as opposed to Cartwright who is more like FG in size.

    • Nick Row says:

Where is Soap on your list?

    • ninersrock says:

You really see Kourtnei Brown making the 53 when you’ve already kept Bakhtiari as a backup OLB? How about Cam Johnson? Brown and Johnson go to PS. And I see that you have Dobbs listed at TE; maybe you should have listed him on D-line, too, because that is where his true value is. I’m not going to count-out the Garbage Man just yet as a 3rd TE. Not sure if the 49ers can keep 5 CB’s by keeping both Cox and Brock. Brock is a probably a better corner, but Cox is more versatile – plus, I see his name popping up more in the camp reports and he had a good preseason game. One of the best camp battles this season. I like Colin Jones, but his only value is on ST. If Robinson displays some ST ability, Jones is probably gone opening up a another roster spot. So without Brown and Jones, you have opened-up two roster spots and a possible 3rd if either Cox or Brock are waived. So, with at least the two, there is a little wiggle room. You never know what things are going to look like at the end of preseason due to injuries at other positions of need.

    • Jack Hammer says:

This is how the 53 man will shake out:

      Smith
      Kaepernick
      Tolzien

      Gore
      Hunter
      Jacobs
      James
      Cartwright
      Miller

      Crabtree
      Moss
      Manningham
      K Williams
      Jenkins
      Ginn

      V Davis
      Walker
Reuland **Dobbs will be extra TE in heavy packages**

      Staley
      Iupati – Looney
      Goodwin – Kilgore
      Boone – L Davis
A Davis **Boone will be swing T**

J Smith – Ricky Jean Fracois
      Sopoaga – Williams
      McDonald – Dobbs – Tukuafu

      Brooks – Bakhtiari
      Willis – Grant

      • ninersrock says:

Looks pretty good, Jack. And thanks for showing who is backing up who – with hyphens!

      • ninersrock says:

Also, it was good to see that you had Gooden listed. I have to admit, though, that I don’t have Tukuafu on my “temporary” 53 list based on how Dobbs and Williams looked last week. Just not sure if the 49ers need seven DL’s running the 3-4.

      • Razoreater says:

Excellent, I would agree with this forcast. Now lets see how it all shakes out. I’ll wager this list is 98% accurate.

      • undercenter says:

I was looking at Reuland myself, actually Jack thats pretty much the way it will shake out it pretty much what I was thinking. There are only a couple of positions that are open when you really look at it.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Razor,

What 2% do you see as inaccurate?

      • Nick Row says:

        Jack

What 2% do you see as inaccurate?

        Cartwright and Bakhtiari

      • Jack Hammer says:

Who do you replace them with Nick?

  10. Randy says:

two fumbles, two not so good articles from cohn.

  11. Coffee's for closers says:

When I read LMJ’s comments about it being easier to rush in the NFL vs. college I became nervous that he might not be taking things to seriously. With Grant’s comment about him not standing out in anyway during camp I have to continue to wonder if he has his head right. Yes, yes preseason, too soon blah blah I’m not calling the kid a bust or saying he sucks, I’m just not comfortable with someone trying to say college play is easier then the NFL but not be blowing away his competition in any form.

    • chris says:

I’m glad you brought this up Coffee. I’m surprised no one said anything sooner. It honestly reminded me of Steven Jackson’s comments in St. Louis when he said no one in the NFL could tackle him one on one. He didn’t have a great year after saying that.
It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

If LMJ turns out half as good as Jackson I’ll gladly eat my words. Too be fair and not to argue with someone who is agreeing with me but Jackson is a quality running back and person from everything I hear and has had an excellent career especially considering the quality of teams he’s had to play on.

  12. Fabio says:

Melky Cabrera suspended 50 games for Testosterone substance use. The Giants are so screwed.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Person looked pretty bad v Minnesota. Let’s see how he looks v Houston.

    • ninersrock says:

No Dobbs? I would definately put him ahead of Tukuafu on the D-line back-up list.

      • oneniner says:

        Dobbs #40 is on offense

      • ninersrock says:

saw that you had him listed as a TE. Maybe an asterisk at both positions, which he definately will be playing, would make more sense – unless you are saying that he will be a TE only? Would you be comfortable with him if VD or Walker go down? Not going to happen to a player that can get into the opponents back-field like he showed last preseason and this last game. Why the preference for Tukuafu and not Dobbs backing J. Smith if you don’t mind me asking?

      • ninersrock says:

As Grant mentioned after the Vikings game. Dobbs dominated! Last 49er defensive player that caught my eye like he has in the preseason was Charles Haley. The TE thing is fun, but this is a player you have to have on defense. I think Reuland takes the #3 TE spot because of how Harbaugh and Co. value TE’s. If they need blocking, you’ll see Dobbs. If they need a receiver, put in the guy that can catch everything from off his laces to over his head.

  15. MidWestNiner says:

Off topic, but there was a signing today.
