Training camp report: Wednesday, the good – Kyle Williams and more

SANTA CLARA – Kyle Williams had his best practice of the offseason, and he was the best wide receiver on the field today. I saw him catch nine passes, including the catch of the day – a diving 20-yard reception over the middle in front of Perrish Cox. Williams also beat Tramaine Brock for a deep touchdown in one-on-one drills. If Williams dropped a pass, I didn’t see it happen. His hands have been great all offseason, and he seems to play faster than all the other wide receivers on the team.

Chris Culliver intercepted another pass today. The receiver he was covering slipped, so Culliver easily picked off Scott Tolzien. It seems like Culliver intercepts one pass per practice. His coverage isn’t as tight as Carlos Rogers’ and Tarell Brown’s, but Culliver’s the one picking off the passes this preseason. He seems to have the best hands of all the defensive backs on the Niners.

Dashon Goldson picked off Alex Smith on the first play of a seven-on-seven drill. Smith fired a short pass to Gore which tipped off the running back’s hands and right into Goldson’s. Gore shoulder checked him hard to the ground, and the whole team yelled, “OOOOOOHHH.”

If the 49ers would Start Moss as the number 1 and Kyle Williams as the number 2, i bet Williams would put up numbers close to Victor Cruz last year…

    • Peter Martinelli says:

      thats crazy talk

        Crazy good talk!

It’s TC. Such ideas are fun.

      • Tony says:

It’s training Camp, nothing is guaranteed until Week 1 in GB. Heck Moss might not even make the team lol… Anything can happen between now and the final cuts day.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Quite right Tony.

The Niners don’t get screwed if they drop any of their WR’s (- AJ). They really can take the best 5-6, and not at all be due to contract reasons.

Whomever we have, they will be the best AS has ever had for sure.

    • Neal says:

You on crack Tony !! Victor Cruz is much better Kyle Williams and Eli Manning much much better then Alex Smith. No need to bet because it would never happen.

    • Mark says:

I agree the coaches have stated he is the best route runner on the team. Even tho his mistake was huge and unforgivable in the NFC champ game. I am still behind him, he is a niner.

    Grant

I think KW will make a better slot WR than MC would. From what you’ve seen, who do you think is better (from the slot now), or has the potential to really give defenses fits from the slot.

    Grant

By your count, how many Int’s has ST had due to tips/WR’s falling? Seems like everyday it happens with him.

  4. oldcoach says:

some players excel in practice others in games and a few in both. i hope k. williams is more of the latter than the former. grant untill he can do it in a regular season game lets not crown him . [denny green might scream at you]

  5. oneniner says:

    .”..whole team yelled, “OOOOOOHHH.”…..”

    yea right!!!

    …….I heard they “squealed like a child”….

  6. Dan says:

WAIT! A positive STORY!! You know what Grant, it’s obvious you don’t like A.J. Jenkins, never have and probably never will. I take back what I said earlier, kind of. Because I like Kyle Williams too. So at least I can say to you now, sometimes we can agree to disagree. But I’m glad to see a positive story coming from you. Keep em coming brother. :)

  7. undercenter says:

Good to hear about Williams, there is only one position on the WRs to fill and looks like he just might fill it. Moss, Crabs, Manningham, Jenkins round it off. Ginn would be the sixth if he makes the team as a return specialist.
