Chris Culliver, and The Look from Aaron Rodgers

GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was fourth and ten with 54 seconds left, and the Packers had to convert the first down or they’d lose. Aaron Rodgers saw Jordy Nelson single-covered by Chris Culliver. Rodgers stared at Chris Culliver. Culliver stared back. Rodgers lifted one eye-brow, as if to say “I hope you’re ready,” and then he called hike and chucked it deep to Nelson, going for it all, not just the first down. Culliver was ready. He ran stride-for-stride with Nelson and easily knocked the pass away. After the game in the locker room, Culliver described to me what happened.

CULLIVER: Aaron Rodgers had been giving me The Look all day. One time they pass-interferenced me, but Coach put us in a good position, and big time players make big time plays, and that’s what I did.

Q: What’s The Look?

CULLIVER: He was just fooling around, looking at me and throwing his eyebrow up.

Q: Like he was coming for you?

CULLIVER: Yeah, sometimes. They tried it a couple times and it wasn’t working. He tried to come back to him. I knew they were going to try to chuck it up. I just made a play.

Q: Do you think they were isolating you, knowing you were out there alone?

CULLIVER: Yeah, I see Rodgers and his hand signals. I knew he was going to come at me.

Q: If you see him in the playoffs, do you expect him to give you The Look again?

CULLIVER: Probably. Most likely.

That’s hilarious. Glad Culliver had the last laugh in the game.

  2. big niner says:

I mentioned that look at gthe end their, obviously I wasn’t there to see the eyebrow, but I knew it was going his way.

  3. fesnyc says:

that is great color, Grant. an inside look at the games within the game, and humorous – thanks.

  4. Brotha Tuna says:

Nice insight, Grant. I saw a number of Niners jerseys in the stands, did they have much presence? I just noticed a couple of camera angles from tv.

  5. oldcoach says:

Go Alex, go Kap, go Akers, go Moss, go Frank, go Bowman, go O line, go culliver, go A Smith [just keep your damn helmet on] GO NINERS its gonna be a great year and shame on me for having questions before this first game. In harbaugh we trust.

    • msclemons67 says:

That call on Aldon was BS. Rodgers kicked his helmet halfway off.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

I agree, Clemons, that the call was wrong, but I think the regular Refs would’ve called it too. It wasn’t evident to me until I saw the replay why his helmet was off. The call on Spillman on kick coverage was worse. Plenty of bad calls to choose from.

        MSC,

The only reason I dont agree with you because Aldon pushed his helmet off. Yes it got kicked part of the way off but Aldon has a bit more showboat in Jim than I’d like for him to have. He’s young and maybe sooner than later he will get it.
I was disappointed that he exposed himself to the penalty more than the penalty itself. He deserved it and I hope he learns from it. It may help him as a person in the bigger picture. He’s an amazing talent and hopefully the class and grace will soon follow. With all that being said, I’m glad he’s on our side.

      • EB Niner says:

        Agreed Jordan,

The helmet was kicked part of the way off, but Aldon could have also pulled it back down or at the very least kept it in his hands and demonstrated he was adjusting it, but he left it on the field. That was juvenile.

Too bad after such an incredible play too. Hopefully, he does learn. Maybe we’ll need Coach Sing the motivator (not the coach version) to come and give him a talking to like w/Vernon.

  6. Vegoose says:

Nice pre-game prediction Grant. Pretty much wrong in every aspect. Good call.

  7. Razoreater says:

Grant, oh ye of little faith… that was almost perfect coverage, textbook on getting your head turned back looking for the ball. Aaron Rogers may be the best, but that arrogant trait in his character sometimes gets him killed.

  8. tucson9er says:

So much for predictions Grant 0-1. Not so much sunshine. By the way, miners roll 7′s, would a think. Haha!!!

  9. Razoreater says:

Hey, where can we watch the live press conferences?

  10. Jt_oSnowlovan says:

Who can name the most physically gifted cornerback in the league?

    That’s right: Chris Culliver
    6’1″
    205 lbs
    4.36s

  11. Jt_oSnowlovan says:

Grant. You hate Alex Smith and Anthony Davis. They both had pretty decent games. Got anything to say?

  12. oldcoach says:

regarding aldon smiths unsportsman like behavior penalty. his helmet was kicked half off his choice was to either pull it the rest of the way off or pull it back on. he made the wrong choice. that kind of play could cost us a game later but i’m sure harbaugh will have a few words with him

  13. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

Gotta call you out this time. The players who you said couldn’t match their GB counterpart, did and more.

You better be giving a lot of A’s come grading time.

  14. big niner says:

lets play nice now. So what if he hates the Niners. The result speaks for itself. WE went in there and kicked their collective asses with the officials against us on at least two major plays, the phantom PI on a reciever away from the play, (should have been an illegal contact at worst) a five yard penalty not 40, and that horrible illegal block in the back on the punt. Those two plays could have cost us the game. All the other missed false starts, holding and what ever that was against spillman, lol he was the one blocked in the back on the kick off, I’m still tryign to figure out how a kickoff unit could get called for that, when theyre’ trying to tackle not block….bottom line, the refs sucked and don’t direspect CG.!!

  15. Chris says:

He correctly predicted Crabtree would be the most involved receiver. He said Moss would make a couple catches. He siad VD would be shut down. If AS sees MC in the endzone wide open, VD would have been a nonfactor. I think his numbers were pretty close receiving wise. The score was close as many of you predicted. At the end of the day, its a 49er win on the road.

  16. MWNiner says:

I had a T-bone steak riding on this game …

Thanks Alex, Moss, Gore and the rest of the Offense, and
    Defense !!
    (the steak was delicious !)

  17. Crossme says:

Great insight on the game. Not really a packer fan, but I like Aaron, and still really liked the article lol. God job Grant! :-)
