Jim Harbaugh’s Friday press conference transcript, courtesy of the 49ers.
Is this time away going to be rough on you, the new dad?
“Yeah, away from the family. But, with our other family here, we’re with our 49er family. And a lot of opportunity there. A lot to look forward to. But the main thing is we’re focused on this game. The all importance of winning this ball game. That’s it. That’s what these young guys are saddled with, to do. And they accept that challenge and that burden. And prepare for it and do whatever they can to put themselves in a position to be successful.”
The availability of WR Ted Ginn Jr. and RB Brandon Jacobs?
“Yeah. They’re making the trip. They’ve been working out with the team. And they’ll be listed today as questionable for the game.”
With Ted, will we see him fielding balls before the game and make that decision then?
“Possibly.”
The replacement refs are getting a lot of abuse in the media, from fans. Do you need to tell your players to not worry about them and to let you handle that on the sideline? Do you go beyond what you normally say to them regarding the referees?
“No. The same message.”
Are you satisfied with your coverage units on special teams?
“Satisfied is one of those words. That’s one of those words, satisfied. Never satisfied with anything in football. That’s one of those words in football that’s always confused me. Given me great confusion. Doesn’t resonate. Satisfied is not a word that I associate with football or coverage units.”
Last year you kept a couple guys on the roster solely for special teams, LB Blake Costanzo and S Colin Jones in particular. Does it hurt those units not having guys who are just solely focused in on that aspect of the game?
“We’ve got the right guys out there. We really believe that. We know we’ve got the right coach, the right blend there. And it’s not like any other part of our game, and part of our football. We’re striving for excellence, that’s what we’re doing. Or striving for perfection really and you hope to catch excellence along the way.”
LB Eric Bakhtiari was part of those units in the preseason, could he just kind of step in and be part of the coverage units these next few weeks?
“Yeah, it’s definitely a possibility for us. There’s a possibility of that in this game, stepping in.”
QB Alex Smith and offensive coordinator Greg Roman talked about how there are worse things than taking a sack. A sack is not the end of the world, it might kill a drive, but mostly, when you’re losing a game it’s turnovers. I assume that’s your philosophy too. Taking a sack is ok?
“I hate being one of the masters of the obvious, kind of guys, stating something obvious. But that is. Are there worse things than taking a sack? Absolutely.”
Is that something you talk to him about? When in doubt, tuck it, take a sack, run it, throw the ball.
“Yeah, it’s part of our teaching. You’re talking about with the quarterbacks now?”
Yeah.
“Yeah, times when they become their own check-downs. We’ve talked about that many times, where they use their legs and they become the check-down. Try to move the chains. If we can get that done efficiently, I think that’s beneficial for our ball club.”
Do you teach a guy how to take a sack, to prevent injury? I mean, is that even possible in football? He kind of knows the sack is coming, do you teach them how to take a sack?
“No. That’s something that we’ve never coached.”
From the tape that you’ve seen of the Vikings, what have you seen –what have you implied from their defense?
“Good defense, good defense. They are an attacking, aggressive defense. They are a blitzing defense, a multiple-coverage defense. Very aggressive up front. It’s a defense that’s trying to get you into bad plays, bad situations and they’ve got the talent and scheme to be able do that.”
What was your reaction to the San Francisco Giants, their outpour of support, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy wearing the Niners hat yesterday?
“That was tremendous, tremendous. Bruce Bochy wearing the Niners cap because –we follow them. I personally follow the Giants and I know that myself, including a lot of the guys on the team here have gotten a lot of inspiration following the club this year. The come from behind wins, the close games. They’re a team that just never gives up. They’re always fighting and they’re coming back. It’s a never say die type of team, I just love watching them and mostly going to the park. Since we started football, I’ve been only catching them on the radio. But, late at night I’ll be driving home, just about every night it seems like, they’ll re-broadcast the game and I’ll catch it there. So I just loved it, Dave Fleming and all those guys doing the call of the game. Just exciting, winning with numbing repetition. It’s been a real inspiration for me personally. I just want to salute them. Just a congratulations. I know they’ll probably clinch the pennant here before we come back. But we’ll be following them. It’s been a great season.”
University of Michigan QB Denard Robinson passed one of your records at Michigan, your Alma Mater. Do you have any thoughts on that?
“My thought it is, I didn’t know I had any records still at Michigan. I’m flattered. See if you can spread the word on that. Which one was it?”
I think it was total passing yards. I thought it was passing yards, I don’t know the exact one.
“Very cool.”
Can you recall a more unique walkthrough that you’ve had than behind the Holiday Inn in Youngstown?
“Probably as unique as some we’ve had. We’ve done a lot of parking lots, at Stanford, and USD, even here with the 49ers. A lot of times you’ll be at a hotel and you try to get out there to the parking lot, if say a ballroom is not available that’s big enough to have a walkthrough. The USD parking garage was outstanding because you had shade, plus nobody could see what you were doing. That was a great site.”
Do you feel a little exposed in Youngstown?
“We’re always on our toes. We’ll have men on the perimeter. Manning the perimeter. (laughing)”

Taking a look at the ultimate win, the Superbowl, I’ve uncovered some interesting data regarding sacks. The last 10 SB winners teams averaged (rounding up) 27 sacks (QB starters) during their SB season. The only team with more than 40 sacks, was the Steelers in 2008 with a total of 46. The lowest sack total over the last 10 years was Indy in 2006 with a total of 14. Taking those two numbers out, (highest and lowest) the average is 26. Given this historical data, it suggests there is a correlation between sack totals and winning (SB). AS is on pace for 56 sacks this season (small sample size of course). I haven’t looked yet at the turnover ratios for these teams during this same period of time. It’s that time. Maybe later…
2011 – NYG 28 sacks
2010 – GB 31 sacks
2009 – N.O. 20 sacks
2008 – Ptt 46 sacks
2007 – NYG 27 sacks
2006 – Indy 14 sacks
2005 – Pitt 23 sacks (32 sacks team total BR only played 12 games)
2004 – N.E. 26 sacks
2003 – N.E. 32 sacks
2002 – TB 21 sacks
Nice data, thanks!
Do those show if it was a coverage, O-line, or qb sack????
I’m asking because what I’ve seen was an O-line that has gelled since last season and is very good this season. So good in fact that a lot of people are praising them and giving them high marks. Smith is one of them. Like Aaron Rodgers. Alex smith takes quit a few sacks that are squarely on him.
you mean squarely on staley right?
technically speaking, the data you presented does not show a “correlation between sack totals and winning (SB).” It shows what the average number of sacks superbowl winning teams had during their season. To find out if the correlation you are looking for actually exists you would need to incorporate data from all the other teams that did not win the superbowl and see if there was a trend. If such a correlation did exist, for example if the team with the fewest sacks was most likely to win the superbowl, it would still not necessarily prove causation.
There is a correlation between two variables. Winning the SB and number of sacks – the numbers prove out the relationship. If the sack totals go up, then SB number go down or is unattainable. The 9ers had 44 sacks last year. Looking at history/trends, is it possible for the 9ers to win the SB if they match last year’s sack numbers or stay on this year’s pace of 3.5 sacks per game.
A more complex or intricate correlation would have been the correlation of sacks and turnovers when winning the SB.
“winning the SB” is a dichotomous variable (either yes or no). To make the statement that winning the superbowl is dependent on, or influenced by, the number of sacks a team gives up, you would need the data (sack numbers) from all those years of all the other teams that didn’t win the superbowl. Then you would be able to see if there is a relationship (correlation) between number of sacks allowed and winning the superbowl.
Right now, all you are showing is the average sacks allowed by superbowl winning teams, minus the highest and lowest. This is fine to look at, but you are not showing a correlation. And its definintely interesting that Pit and Ind were the extremes because of their style of play. Big ben is able to extend plays to make huge gains, but also takes a lot of sacks in the process, whereas PM was a master of recognizing pressure and getting the ball out fast to keep the defense off balance.
You presented a good case for concern about the number of sacks taken, you just can infer a relationship without looking at more information.
should say *Can’t* in that last sentence
THIS MEANS NOTHING…..Not every team will be getting to Alex like Green bay and Detroit did…..Green Bay has Clay Matthews….Detroit has Suh, Fairley, Vanden Bosch, and a couple LBs…..Last I checked only a couple teams have A Clay Matthews type of player and very few have a front four like Detroit…..Last time I checked there are only really four great defenses in the NFL right now…..Bal.timore, Houston, NYG, and The Faithful 49ers….Green Bay has 1 great defender, Detroit has A couple….Most teams have one Great Player on there defense. Darelle Revis is not Great!
Jon, Hofer did qualify with “small sample size”. I also seriously doubt AS will be taking 4 sacks per all season long as well.
Even if he does, this is a team that laughs at stats and trends. Given last year’s'red-zone and 3rd down success rate, “history” says they had no business being one turnover away from the SB.
I rather take a sack then try to force passes and throw in tight windows so I agree.
Off topic quote from Maiocco regarding 49ers taking Jenkins over Fleener:
“Obviously, there’s not a staff in the NFL that knows the former Stanford player as well as the 49ers’ . . . and they decided to go with Jenkins. So that says something.”
I think it says they needed a WR more than a TE :-)
Who keeps asking these terrible questions about taking sacks? Wow, I cant believe this is still a topic of discussion.
<i"“Satisfied is one of those words. That’s one of those words, satisfied. Never satisfied with anything in football. That’s one of those words in football that’s always confused me. This has to be preserved as the most Harbaugh quote ever.
html FAIL
Totally Harbaugh. That mindset is how you avoid F.P. Soft and complacency.
MSCl,
Yeah, that was a great response. It’s great that he has that mindset and it provided unintended comedy. Perfect, keep it coming Jim.
The idea that “satisfied” is a foreign word to Harbaugh makes me happy.
Lot of talk that Adrian Peterson is going to do well this Sunday, I do not get it? Is the East Coast Bias that bad where common sense is forgotten? I love all day AP, but Minnesota better not be dumb with him! This Ninner D is special and I do not know what else they need to do to get more respect!
True, The niners faces a ton of elite running attacks last year and shut them all down (minus one or two depending on how you count). Whatever though; as long as the niners are being underestimated, they will show up to and surprise people.
rebel – Who said 28 is going to do well? Just curious.
Crabs I think AP will have a decent day. He is a special player so I dont see him being completely shut down. If the Vikes are smart they will try to be versatile. If AP has more than 15-20 carries he will be a sore man Monday morning. Better to be balanced against our d cause once they make you one dimensional it’s pretty much over.
Prime -I agree, 28 will have a decent day. Less than 80 yards though.
HEY CRAB-On XM radio I listen to the Fantasy Football radio station and three different hosts thought AP would get a touch down or two. I need to be better about remembering names. Also Boomer Esiason thought the Ninners were in for a let down game and would surprise our team! Also lots of talk the Packers and Lions are overated, and us beating them had nothing to do with it. Not that important, Just glad we have the team and the leadership we have.
So, this East Coast bias inflates the strength of mid-west team’s running games? I wish people would lay off with this incessant ‘east coast bias’ crap.
I don’t doubt there is an east coast bias, but looking at the numbers and the results, Greenbay and Det are overrated. I think the 49ers are going to have a harder time with Toby Gerhart and Ponder than AP.
I hope SF doesn’t lose this game, but I think it”s going to be harder than GB or DET.
You better believe Singletary wants this game. It might be a tighter score than you think…
IPD,
That was a joke, right? If so, funny, very funny.
If not, it’s still funny, just in different way.
Who do you THINK is asking these sack questions?
You don’t think being sacked 7 times in 2 games is a legitimate point of inquiry?
No. Only if they directly impacted the result.
But since it’s the media’s duty to point out percieved flaws in a team with very few, this is what passes as “analysis”.
It’s more of an issue if the 9ers are losing. All stats are looked at more closely if they affect results or in this case, winning success.
Rib,
I respectfully disagree.
It seems like a legitimate point of discussion. Harbaugh, Roman and Smith said that sacks aren’t the worst thing in the world. They never said they didn’t care if the QB is sacked.
If the 49ers are among the NFL leaders in QB sacks given up, it’s not good.
Just because sacks given up haven’t had an impact on the outcome of a game yet, doesn’t mean they should be ignored. A game could be coming where avoiding a sack could be the difference between winning and losing, so why wait until a sack does affect the outcome of a game to react [or, in our case, discuss]?
Nobody likes sacks and especially when Smith has been among the most sacked QB’s in the game so far. This is one area where Smith still struggles a bit and it goes back to the pocket awareness angle we’ve talked about on here repeatedly. Smith will sometimes move to the wrong spot in the pocket and walk into a sack. It’s not knowing where the breakdown is occuring and is something he’s always had an issue with. He’s gotten better over time, but every now and then I still see him take a sack when an opening has popped up on the back side for him to escape.
The answers to the questions are in reference to whether it’s better to take a sack in the pocket or get a little more careless with the football and either risk having it knocked out of your hand or picked off on a throwaway. I don’t think anyone is saying it’s a good thing to get sacked, and Smith rarely gets sacked if he escapes the pocket. He’s pretty good at getting rid of the football in those situations. It’s awareness of where the breakdowns are in the pocket that he needs to continue to improve on imo.
well said rocket. Smith seems to get surprised on a lot of his sacks, so its an awareness thing that he could improve, hopefully. But when he does escape the pocket he is Far more agile than people give him credit for. But also lets give him credit for toughness. I absoulutely love the images of blood running down his nose as he leads the team and throws that game sealing TD pass.
Simpletary wanted to be a head coach too, now look at him. I’d rather have Leavitt as our linebackers coach. The Vikings will be conquered Sunday.
Here’s a sign that the 49ers have arrived: the niners vikings game will be televised in Los Angeles this sunday. Boom!
Also, there is a really good article by Jim Trotter on SI.com about Crabtree (its very complimentary FYI so nobody gets their panties in a bundle)
Dangle,
How do you know this? From Claude’s NFL game broadcast map link or have the listings been changed?
As an out of market fan, I always check:
http://www.the506.com/temp11.html
It shows the NFL tv distribution, and no they don’t pay me.
Dangle,
Thanks.
That’s a link Claude posted under an earlier blog entry. It’s been showing LA as getting the 49er game since this week’s map has been up, but the TV listings finally confirmed that info today. I guess that’s a good source for knowing which games we’re getting.
If anyone has the game on DVR, watch Moss coming off of the field after Vernon Davis’ 2nd touchdown againstnthe lions. Moss comes off and goes past Harbaugh after JH congratulates VD. He’s patting Moss on the shoulder pads and saying good job Randy. Randy doesn’t even acknowledge JH, doesn’t even look at him, although moss has his helmet off. That’s where Razoreater says Moss goes over near the bench and slams his helmet down as hard as he can.
I would really like too how the incentives are set up in Moss’s contract. It’s obviously heavily incentive laden.
Give it up with the couch psychology Jordan.
Jordo, MBach interviewed RM this last week asking about being a 9er and returning to Minn to face his old team. RM said he knows what his role is and he enjoys being a 9er. Do you know what your role is as a fan and do you enjoy the ride?
Hof in all your time on here, do you really think this piece of work is a fan? He is here to highlight the negative, no way any sane fan does not see positive top to bottom with the 49ers.
Of course Moss is upset. What competitor would not be. It’s in their DNA. Does that mean Moss is going to bring the org. down? No, he wants the ball just as much as VD, Gore, Crabs, and Mario. It’s about the team, Moss knows that and if he does not get it, JH will send him back into retirement.
23welcher keep riding the dumb wagon, it provides me with laughable entertainment.
J23,
Just so you know, there really aren’t witches in your closet, so you can rest easy at night.
I saw the same thing, worried about it for a second then realized there’s no way to know what’s going on in Moss’s head. We’ll see how it plays out. In the mean time, take it easy, dude.
Dude,
If you don’t agree so be it. But why the need to be a wide ass constantly? You really aren’t that sharp. You just want to be. It’s an opinion. I don’t think I said Jack Hammer anywhere in my comment. Therefor, no need to even respond.
Your opinion is not an opinion. It never has or will possess any insight, or fact. It’s all garbage, the same stuff in your brain. Not once have you brought something substantially positive on the blog. It’s all negative, maybe a reflection of your life, who knows, either way, seek help now!
23jordan, you’re a one lost soul ! I’m smh on all the crap that you post on the blog. Find something productive in your life, before its to late child, have some remorse.
Jordan,
For someone who post’s so much crap you sure are thin skinned. If you can’t take your opinion being criticized go talk to yourself.
Off-topic here but “hatgate” irritates me. A guy can’t support the hometown baseball team without getting fined? This is what’s wrong with our corporatist country in a nutshell. That and consumerism-run-amok-idiots camping out to get a new iPhone but God forbid you protest against consumerism on a sidewalk somewhere.
Anyway, classy move by Bochy and Romo wearing the Niners gear in support.
And… Merton Hanks, you should know better! Get that rule changed. Stupid. Smith gets a $15,000 fine (although vacated) and the Lions defender who hits him late on the slide gets half that? The real threat here is a guy getting hurt. Check that against the league not making some cash on an advertising contract. Totally out of whack.
I hope Smith grows a pair and continues to wear the Giants hat. Brian Wilson said he’d pay the fines.
Way to play for the home town, guys!
Adam
What is “hategate”?
And I agree whole-heartily with you on the Merton Hanks fining AS $15k deal for wearing the hat, but no fines for that hit AS took. The KNBR guys were saying had it been Tom Brady, it would have been flagged. And I betcha a new rule would have been added as well.
Adam posted hat gate not hate gate.
@brotha
That would make more sense then.
:- )
The guy was fined but it’s only something like $8k.
Just kind of shows where the league’s priorities are.
If you haven’t seen Brian Wilson’s tweet on it, check this out: http://twitter.com/BrianWilson38
Fear the Beard!
Adam
Do you think if the Giants were to win the World Series, that AS could join in the parade as a participant?
Then in Feb, some of the Giants could join in on the Niner Super Bowl Parade.
That would be a cool story.
They’d probably get fined. :P
I’m sure the Niners would be celebrating and supporting the Giants right along with the rest of No. Cal.
Those pesky Alexcuses. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000064272/article/alex-smith-is-a-star-quarterback-three-upset-picks-for-week-3
Of course many of us, who actually pay attention to what’s going on, have made these observations (right here on this blog and elsewhere) for several years now.
It’s not JUST the stability at coaching that is helping the offense (although that’s huge) but it’s also that there’s been an emphasis on upgrading the wide receivers – this time around – and it’s been sorely needed . It looks to me like Manningham might have a bigger impact (if he stays healthy) than Moss but it’s still too early to say for sure. It appears that Crabs finally has his foot in one piece, also. Now we’ll finally get to see him excel. And so far, it’s been top shelf. A solid off-season helped all these guys.
Anyway, the national media is finally warming up a bit to Smith and it’s good to see. Nobody deserved it more, the guy is one tough SOB and seems to have cat lives – just when you think he’s dead, he claws his way back.
Also good to see the various power polls. The Niners are back where they belong. Congrats to the team, owners and all us fans for hanging through a decade of misery. It’s been a tough slog but the Bay Bombers are BACK!
I don’t need to mention the defense. They’re #1 and have almost all of the same players back from last season. ‘Nuff said there.
And damn! That stadium sure is going up quick.
I’m in Niners mood and haven’t been checking in like usual so I’m dumping it all out in one post. :P
Nice to see that the Alex Lovers have come to see that the majority of the sacks he takes is due to his part and not the OL. They’ve been whinning about the OL for years when in all reality it boils down to Alex being to scared to throw the ball into tight windows or is too hesitant for what ever reason and takes a sack. Works lately because he has such a great defense to get away with it.
Uh, yeah, you’re probably right. If only Alex wasn’t such a putz, Chilo Rachal would’ve been in the Pro Bowl. Now that he’s in Chicago with a real quarterback he’s headed for All-Pro and future Hall of Fame. Oh wait, he’s not starting on one of the most porous offensive lines, hmmmmmm.
Actually Brotha, Chilo is starting this week.
Even though I dislike Cutler this is terrifying. We’re going to find out what the inside of Jay looks like.
Or maybe now Dan the oline and Alex have a better working understanding of the offense and each other in this system.
Why is everyone so enamourmed with talking about the past. The offense is growing and getting more formidable with each week. The hogs up front are actually talking trash! I think that’s great. Those guys not only need to be confident but nasty while doing it. They set the tone on offense, Alex makes the calls, distributes the ball accordingly, and boom, a championship offense to compliment an all world defense.
That’s how it all works Dano, in unison!
“PRIME TIME” – You are on top of your game today.
Nasty hogs…..good stuff.
We know AD is a mean mofo, just ask Grant. Iupati is a pulling beast. Boone is bad a$$ with a checkered past and Staley and Goodie are solid professionals with Staley showing more confidence each year.
This unit has been most impressive so far and gets my MVP to date.
Dan
You made a typo dude.
“Alex Lovers”
is
“Niners Lovers”
There. It happens to the best of us. Enjoy!
@DS “Alex Lovers” didn’t want an upgrade at the QB position. 49ers fans want upgrades at every position.
>>@DS “Alex Lovers” didn’t want an upgrade at the QB position.
Nope, “Alex Lovers” didn’t. And how’s that working out for “Niner Lovers” so far?
You chose Alex over the team. Keeping Alex was more important than improving the 49ers.
I think that says a lot.
Why upgrade when there was never a need. Manning not looking so good especially if we would have had to let Rodgers, Brooks, Spillman, Goldson and probably A few others walk to sign one guy. That would have been a bad business decision.
“Why upgrade when there was never a need?”
You’d have to ask Harbaugh that question. Baalke and Harbaugh pursued an upgrade. 49ers fans were excited about the potential upgrade.
Alex Smith fans weren’t.
Lemons says” Baalke and Harbaugh pursued an upgrade. 49ers fans were excited about the potential upgrade.
But real 49er fans understand the economics of the game and salary cap implications by signing one guy to a 90 million dollar contract while also having to release core guys and playmaking starters on both sides of the ball.
Maybe if you listened more carefully to the coaches words “the team, the team, the team” you would understand that it was an evaluation by Roman/JH but once they realized that it would cost them zero cap flexibility, losing depth guys, and changing their entire offensive philosophy, that was a deal breaker.
I’m sure any 49er fan realizes that looking back it was a no brainer now, right? Or would you have given up Smith, Brooks, Goldson, Brooks, Spillman and maybe Rodgers for Peyton? Would you do that deal Lemons?
Sorry one Brooks, not 2! I know someone out there will be all over my grammar and spelling so I better correct that now. Any other spelling mistakes send complaints to my grade 1 teacher!
msc/others
What would PM have done these first 2 games that is positive that AS hasn’t? Keep in mind while not putting the team at risk due to ego.
Answer: Nothing. Zilch. Nada. Plus we keep all those core key guys which never happens had PM signed. And PM has no more than a few years lefft of productive play. How much older was HOF QB Steve Young when he took over than AS is now?
AS is plenty young enough to play another 10 years. If you guys looked at SY’s start and held the same grudge towards him as you do AS, you’d highly doubt him as well. Only reason you don’t is because we didn’t see TB. They sucked back then. Hardly ever got any national games and before Direct TV had their NFL GANMEDAY deal. Unless you lived near TB or near a divisional opponents home, you never saw them but once every 5 years or so. You didn’t see him suck. Only heard of it.
That is the primary difference. Get with it guys. Nobody could have come in here and done what AS has this year. Expect a re-negotiation of his contract before it ends (raise).
DS says “Expect a re-negotiation of his contract before it ends (raise)”
The thing about that DS is that Alex would structure his deal to give the Niners more cap space and flexibility to keep all those core guys. He and everyone else knows that without that depth it does not jive with who and what the Niners are, the consummate team. No ego, no stars, no agendas, just be the best team ever. That starts by putting everything ahead if yourself.
Prime
The cap is going up next year, or the year after.
This Niners team does what they should have done last year, AS deserves a raise.
Not crazy like $20 million. But $10-12 million is doable. That is only $2-4 million and the cap increase is greater than that I believe.
I’m sure AS will work with management. But do you think he won’t get a raise? I think FA #1/2 are DG/NB. I bet Willis would be willing to negotiate to keep those guys around.
DS to me Bowman and Goldson are absolutely necessary in resigning. After that T.Brown and try to extend Crabtree. That way we will know if he wants to stay in SF.
At some point they will have to address what to do with Kap. Not sure what they do with him cause a long term deal to Alex means they have to trade him and they lose all leverage if they do that prematurely.
Prime
MC is getting paid a lot now. Do you try to sign him for the same amount? Or a lower amount? Would you be willing to give MC a raise? Because if you gave him a raise of $1 million, he would be making just about $1-1.5 million less than AS right now. Is he worth that? The Niners have him 2 more years if they want. But at a high salary (like $6 million or just under). Do we ask him to renegotiate a lower pay contract to keep the team together?
Did you read that article about MC? He may not want to stick around a team that isn’t passing it around 50 times a games. Then on top of that, you are asking for him not to get a raise. If you were MC, would you stay? A place where you aren’t getting a lot of passes, and for less money or equal after you just had your best season? That would be a hard pill for anybody to swallow.
As for CK, he’s under contract for awhile longer. No need to worry about him just yet. Especially if nobody seee him play a lot. Look at Seattle and that GB kid. I think GM’s are less likely now to pay a backup of another team a lot of money. And I don’t hear that GB is missing him either.
Good points DS. I’m not sure what Crabtree and the numbers would be but if I’m Baalke I want to know his intentions. Meaning if he does not want to renogiate and insted play out his deal then most likely he wants out. If that’s the case Im looking to trade him or give Jenkins an opportunity sooner rather than later.
This is still a young team and keeping it together might be difficult. I’d start getting a feel of where some guys heads are at long term with the 49ers.
Trading MC would be hard. It is possible for the new team to renegotiate it, but trading highly paid players in the NFL happens how often?
Had MC not been drafted where he was he’d be able to get a raise easily. His draft status actually hurts his odds of staying here unfortunately.
I still maintain we drafted AJ for a reason beyond depth. I don’t see MC staying here at the salary he is getting now (TBside), or him being ok with a lower salary to remain on a team that doesn’t give the WR 10-20 shots a game as he put it (MC side). That only happens if MC really wants to stay and be on a top contending team. Not impossible mind you. But how often do guys leave teams that recently won to go someplace else that pays more, but they aren’t as good? If rarely, it would be easy to keep a team together. And if it comes down to a WR or a QB, teams will select the QB to hold onto.
After all the drama and turmoil with Crabtree I would hate to let him walk for nothing, but this is the NFL and that’s usually how it goes. I know trades are difficult but I’m sure Dallas or HOU would be interested?

If Dallas/Houston think MC isn’t happy, why give up a pick for him? Wait till 2013/no later than 2014 and get him then without giving up the pick?
GM’s are strange. They’ll trade all kinds of picks on draft day, but almost never the other 364 days a year. They’ll trade picks for unknown NFL guys from college, but not known ones (like MC/Wallace/Grant). Not like other sports.
I would not negotiate with Crabs at all, he is finally coming into his own, but why negotiate now, he is a possession receiver, nothing wrong with it, every team needs one, yes he has good hands and making nice plays, let’s see how he does the entire season not just a couple of games before we open the vault.

We weren’t discussing about the now. We were discussing about after this season. I’d only trade him now for a comparable player + a 1st, and that ain’t happening. Assuming MC maintains his play as we’ve seen. MC has 1 more year on his contract as a salary cap player. 2 with the teams option year.
MC wants the ball more. No biggie, all WR’s do. But in this case he says other teams give WR’s a lot more chances, and face it. With JH and our D, he won’t get those numbers here.
If I’m TB, I approach MC about the next contract offer after this season. If he does not accept, I look to trade him (unlikely). If no trade offers come up, then that is a pickle. You don’t want a WR disgruntled. And the odds of that happening go up over time as he continues to not see the ball as often as most teams because they just throw it more.
So, it is on TB to decide. Not an easy choice, since I’d want a raise if I just had the best season of my life and I got paid what I am because that is what I deserved to start. But if you give MC a raise, that may cause trouble down the line.
Dan gotta say it was both. Although I get your point. Smith only fans like ds would beat that excuse to death.
And ds in your case he typed it perfectly. Quit trying to claim my team. Stick with your boy. He’s doing fine.

Don’t bring me up. Anything you think I have for AS, you have a lot more of it for me than I do for Alex. Does your wife approve of the posts directed at me while she sleeps and you’re alone in the dark thinking of me with all those 3:00 AM posts of yours. Disgusting thought, but you do.
Go away.
FEAR THE BEAVER!
I like Beaver!
Hammer/Prime – Lol………UCLA aint fearin no bushy beavers! :-)
Can UCLA pound the beaver? It remains to be seen if they’re UP for it.
Row – ha, too funny man.
Gotta run soon, will be back tmrw morning for live blog.
Don’t laugh, I’m tailgating @Angels vs White Sox game today in Anaheim. I’m a Giants fan though.
My old college teammate/friend is the Mngr of the Sox (R. Ventura), he left me tickets at will call.
You dudes all rock! Go Niners
Have fun Crab
Crab,
You played college baseball at OSU?
Yes I was centerfielder & Ventura was the stud at 3B. Good old days.
Thanks guys.
That’s sweet! Have fun Crab : )
Have you ever talked to Ventura about the time he ran up on Nolan Ryan and ended up getting in a headlock? My theory is that Ventura started to the mound, remembered who it was he was rushing and decided he didn’t want to hit Ryan. I always thought Ventura could’ve kicked Ryan’s ass had he wanted too.
xgolfer – I talked to him during batting practice yeterday but I’ve never brought up the Nolan Ryan thing. I was embarrassed for him.
Ventura never lifted weights, even as a pro. He hated weights. Ryan was too powerful for him.
BTW, Ventura got ejected in 4th inning last night. Lol
Back to Niner talk.
My prediction: Alex will throw for 300+ yards today!

What do you think of your buddy Schiano’s controversy last week?
I think it was a bush move on his part. He can’t say, “we play till the end” because at the end of the first half when NY downed it they didn’t rush like that.
Coughlin handled it wrong though. He should have taken it up with him in private. It took away from the game, just like “The Handshake”
I’d like to see a rule change. In order to keep the clock rolling, a team must gain positive yardage. This would avoid the silly kneel downs at the end of games.
By the way, OSU just scored a TD – up 16-3 now
Totally disagree.
Yep saw it. Mora better take a little blue pill to help beat the Beavers. UCLA wasn’t up for this game.
Just keep throwing it to Shaq Evans.
I like that rule change Nick.
Reminds me of all the comparisons/hype leading up to SF/GB with coaching, backfields, Special Teams, QB’s, etc. Then one analyst said “Guys, let’s make it simple. Whoever protects the QB the best will win.” Made sense to me.
Personally, I’ve always wanted to see AS throw the ball out of bounds. Even if we were to get a grounding penalty, it’s better than putting himself in harms way- and if he had to be a tough guy he could easily accept a roughing the passer penalty, now and again.
Now a real college team can start playing. Boomer Sooners! Wheeeeew!
Gonna be a good one.
MD the real team “Oregon” plays Arizona. There is potential for a combine 200 offensive plays. Both these teams play fast 7:30 tonight espn.
Under…. Take it easy. Lol all I can say for my sooners right now is…. Gun meet mr foot. Wheeew
HEAR, HEAR…Undercenter
Baaaaaad day in sports for me folks. Lets hope it’s a day not a weekend. Gonna step out with the wifey to hear some blues and drink this day away cheers faithful!
Grant,
Did you sleep in this morning?
He’s recovering from the UCLA loss
Ha! That had to be a tough one. Sorry, Grant.
Throw the freakin ball away!
