Harbaugh on Youngstown, Ohio and looking forward to the Jets

Here is Jim Harbaugh’s Monday press conference transcript, courtesy of the 49ers.

I did not attend this press conference, which took place in the boardroom of a Youngstown, Ohio Holiday Inn.

I’m not in Youngstown, but I will be in East Rutherford, New Jersey to cover the game next Sunday.

How are you doing?

“Good. Excited to be here in Youngstown. Looking forward to a great week of preparation here. And feel like it gives us a unique opportunity to circle the wagons and get a great week of preparation.”

Do you guys need to circle the wagons after yesterday?

“Always need to circle the wagons. It provides a unique way, to get the preparation, the mindset, right for our next ball game.”

Can you talk about the decision to come back here to Youngstown? What was behind it? And how you’ll use it, as you said, to kind of grow as a team?

“Well, yeah that and quite a few things. To take out the air travel, somewhere in the neighborhood of eight hours of flight time in what would be a five-day period. So, that’s one of the biggest ones. And also the ability to be here as a team in a unique way during the season. The advantages that the town provides, the facilities at Youngstown State University are excellent. So, several reasons.”

What are the positives to being here, though? What are the things you can accomplish as a group off the field in that regard?

“Well, we’re all staying under one roof for every night that we’re here. And eating those meals together, training together, practicing together, meeting together. And learn more about your team. Learn more about the guys, their stories. And talk football, prepare for a game on Sunday.”

By the time that you guys played the Eagles last year, did you feel like you were on East Coast time? And did you feel acclimated to the time zone that you were playing in after that week here?

“I felt like it. And then you can never put yourself in somebody else’s body. But, we felt like it was a good thing, Matt.”

I understand that you had the chance to meet with Hall of Fame RB Jim Brown?

“Yes.”

How was that?

“It was an honor. It was enlightening. Thought I learned some good things talking to Mr. Brown. My family, especially my dad, has always been a big fan of Jim Brown. They’ve met on several occasions, and this was the first opportunity that I met Jim Brown. And I really enjoyed our visit.”

Do you think it was beneficial for the players, too, just the way they were kind of coming up to him and kind of listening in on those conversations?

“I think so. In fact, I’m pretty sure of it. Yeah, just from the interaction. Just good man-to-man talk, football talk, life talk. It was very good.”

What kind of stuff did you learn?

“Well, we covered several topics. Learned more about him, his story, how he saw the game. How he sees the game right now. That he loves football. And that he has a deep abiding respect for it. And he’s someone that wants to see others benefit from what he knows. So, not hoarding that knowledge, but sharing it. And I think he comes at it with a very unique perspective. He’s seen a lot as it relates to football, as it relates to life. Those are things that he’s most interested in passing on to younger players, younger coaches.”

Did you talk at all about RB Frank Gore? I know that you don’t like to compare guys, but he must be an admirer of hard-nosed running backs. Did he bring up Gore’s name at all?

“Yes. They visited together and all the running backs made it a point to shake hands, or take a picture and ask questions.”

Unique opportunity for WR Mario Manningham as well being this is his home town. Can you talk about his role on the team and kind of his growth? I know it hasn’t been very long here. And then also that opportunity for him to be back here kind of back in his backyard.

“Yeah, and several guys. [G/T] Alex Boone, [WR] Ted Ginn [Jr.], [S] Donte Whitner. I think that goes for several of just the East coast guys, Mid-West east coast guys a chance to practice, play in their area of operation. So, their families can come to practice and Alex can check in on his young son. There’s a lot of benefits that way, as it relates to Mario, Ted. Those guys are going to get home and see some family and same with Alex. And that’s a very good thing.”

But in Mario’s role with the team, can you just elaborate on what he needs to do and what you’re looking for from him?

“What he’s been doing, contributing. And he’s a very good football player that plays at a very high level. And that’s what he’s been giving us and he’s a guy you can count on.”

Your second year here, you came here last year, kind of got into it. Is this year easier as far as practicing here because you guys know what to expect and you know what facilities you can use and when, that kind of thing?

“I think some things will be, yes definitely. We’re doing it for the second time. We’re doing it again. Everything we did we’re doing it for the second time as it relates to being in Youngstown.”

What impact do you anticipate CB Darrelle Revis’ injury having on the New York Jets’ defense?

“I don’t know that.”

Well, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he’s out for the year with an ACL tear.

“Yeah, so what impact that’s going to have on the Jets? I don’t know that for sure.”

We talked to a couple of your receivers and almost sort of counter intuitively they were disappointed that Revis wasn’t going to be playing because they really wanted to play against one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Do you kind of share that as a coach? Do you want to go against the best? Or do you sort of like the advantage of them being without their top cornerback?

“I don’t think any of us in football, whether it’s your own team or an opponent, you don’t want to see that happen to another player. You don’t want to see them be injured. Just like you don’t want that to happen to your own players. But, I think all players feel the same way. I feel pretty confident in saying that.”

Given the unique circumstances of the travel and all that stuff, what’s the message to the team when you address them? What’s your take on that? What do you tell them to get them going here as you move forward this week?

“What we believe in is pretty consistent. You go to work, find something to believe in and then go to work on that. And that’s what we believe in, is preparation. It’s going to put us in the best position possible to be successful. We go to work and we attack it. That’s our message.”

You mentioned yesterday that DT Isaac Sopoaga and LB Patrick Willis would have X-rays, how did those turn out? Negative?

“Yeah, turned out good for both of those guys.”

When you looked at the film of that game, in what areas do you feel need improvement most, after seeing yesterday’s game?

“Without really getting into specifics, we’ll address that with the guys when we come in. We didn’t play our best and we’ll look at the ways to go to work and fix that. Everybody, players, coaches, that’s something that we’re shouldered with doing. That’s our responsibility to get that done. The Vikings did, they played a very good game. It’s not our mindset, but I sensed this from people that live in a mythical, magical, fantasy world of just expecting that game, that we would win. It just doesn’t work that way. Your enemy has a vote on that and they played a very good football game and we got beat. So we’ve got to bounce back, that’s on us, to work and prepare. Yeah, we’ll go in with confidence that we expect to win any game, anywhere, anytime, anyplace. But that confidence comes through preparation and we’re going to do a great job of that again this week. We’ll be going against another very talented, very well-coached football team, another very hostile environment. That’s just a fact of business. That’s just the nature of football in the National Football League.”

Did WR Nathan Palmer, did he come here with you guys?

“Yes.”

And then he got shipped to Indianapolis?

“Yes. He was signed by the Indianpolis Colts.”

You guys brought in three undrafted rookies, and two of them, Owusu and Palmer are on 53-man rosters elsewhere. Does that surprise you at all? What did you see from those guys in training camp?

“Good things. Going back to the very first press conference we had of the year, after the very first rookie minicamp. I noticed on that day, that we had probably the finest group of young wide receivers I’d ever seen at a training camp, or in a rookie camp. So, no, it doesn’t surprise me.”

Now that you’re here a second time and you’re out with the community and you get to see this type of thing, does this start to become a real home away from home the more time you’re here, the more time you spend with the community, out with people and just being here with the team practicing?

“Yes. Made some very good friends. I learned a lot from a lot of the people we’ve met here. And continue to do that. The more time you spend, the better it gets. There was a young guy from over at the hospital named Tyler, who gave me this beautiful necklace with a picture of Woody Hayes on the front and a little bit of biography on coach Hayes on the back. I was admiring Tyler’s necklace last year, and he brought this for me this year. Had it waiting for me when we came over. Means a lot. Also, Tyler’s in remission from Leukemia, it’s wonderful news, wonderful news to get today. And a wonderful gift too, from that youngster.”

Is this a really interesting change of pace, being West coast guys and kind of coming back to the Midwest? I know some people were from here, but from day-to-day life over there, is it kind of a nice change of pace to be in this part of the country for a week?

“It’s very good. I consider myself a Midwesterner and a Californian and all those things. I don’t see that much difference to be honest with you. But yes it is great to be here.”

You currently obviously don’t have a wide receiver on the practice squad, does that present any sort of a challenge in terms of preparation?

“We’ll address that.”

Going back to yesterday’s game, TE Vernon Davis caught a third quarter touchdown pass, he’s been catching touchdown passes in consecutive games here. How reliable has he become as a scoring threat?

“The proof is there. Evidence is there. He’s been doing a very good job. He can do a lot of things really well and that’s what makes him a very fine player.”

He said he didn’t – when he caught the touchdown yesterday he didn’t celebrate because you guys were losing. Is that team policy or is that just every guy understanding the situation?

“You know, I’ve told you before what it is. It’s within the player’s personality. In terms of celebrating. So there’s no policy, no.”

His point was, you guys were losing so he didn’t celebrate, so just wondering.

“You asked if there was a policy, there’s not a policy.”

I know you haven’t been here long yet, but has head coach Eric Wolford reached out to you, the head coach at Youngstown State University? And have you guys had a chance to speak yet, or any interaction in that regard?

“Not yet. But I know he’s doing a heck of a job and has had a couple great early wins. Have a lot of respect for his program.”

  1. elGuapo says:

So … I’m taking it that Pat and Soap are good to go this Sunday?

  2. LSX says:

I have some family and friends in Youngstown. Not a bad area at all

  3. Nick says:

What a bunch of BS questions. There was only one question about Sunday’s game. Can these reporters grow some balls and ask tough questions?

    • DS94everXev says:

      Nick

I agree. Was this a bye week? It would explain our crappy play yesterday if so. Where are the football questions?

I know JH isn’t giving you any. He’s doing his job. Not an excuse for reporters to not do their jobs though.

    • msclemons67 says:

Harbaugh doesn’t answer tough questions. Why bother asking?

      • Crab15 says:

Clem – This is what you ask Harbaugh then.
“Many Niner fans think you’re a coward for dodging any tough questions, what would you say to them coach?” :-)

      • DS94everXev says:

        msc

        Because it is your job.

Mind you, that doesn’t equate to being an ass to a guy and then claim it’s your job to be like that. But I came out reading that knowing nothing more than I did before reading it. That lies on the reporters.

      • Crab15 says:

DS – You are exactly right.
It sounds like a staged press conference.
Like if Obama had his own political campaign asking him questions about playing basketball, instead of questioning him on the economy.

      • DS94everXev says:

        C15

Or Romney telling us how bad Obama-care is since its model was Romney’s.

Sorry. You set that up too nicely.

      • Crab15 says:

DS – You got me, I do lean to the right :-)
All in fun man. My family is split 50/50.
As for Niners, I know we’ll bounce back strong next week. No sacks vs Ponder means heavy duty pass rush vs Sanchez. He will pay the price Sunday.

      • DS94everXev says:

        C15

I’ll yank you to the left then to getcha back into the middle. lol

  4. thehindu19 says:

Wow that was one of the worst press conferences I’ve ever heard. Grant I know you weren’t there but what is up with all the ridiculous soft ball questions for the coach? I realize he rarely gives much insight but how about trying to get some explanations about being outplayed and quite frankly outcoached by a bad football team coming off a 3-13 season. Are these reporters scared?

    • Crab15 says:

hindu19 – Really, no tough questions???

    • angusinCanada says:

Harbaugh’s made it abundantly clear he is, for better or worse, not going to give anything even remotely close to a substantive answer on “football” questions. I don’t even read most of his pressers now, unless I want to hear about inspiring individuals, or manly men.

  5. 49ersROK says:

I hope the 49ers bounce back from last game. I was really displeased with the coaching decisions, notably not slinging the ball when the game was clearly falling out of reach. They needed a change: either let the Kapper give it a go or get it to Moss. By not trying it left just more questions. We still don’t know if Moss has still got it or not. He’s an athlete. You have to give him the shot to do or die then we won’t be questioning things the rest of the season. AJ Jenkins wasn’t even activated. It doesn’t bode well for the playoffs.

  6. thehindu19 says:

How about a simple question of why there wasn’t 1 deep shot down the field the entire game or the entire season for that matter? I’m sure they called a few but I can’t remember 1 pass that has traveled beyond 20 yards in the air all season. Now they didn’t really need it the 1st two weeks but it was clear the Vikings were only concerned about defending within 10 or so yards of the line of scrimmage.

    • 23jordan says:

      Thehindu,

We all want to know! Maybe the QB doesn’t feel comfortable doing so. Funny, lots of people seem to think that the Niners have been throwing the football downfield. I agree with you. I’ve not seen it very often. Maybe we missed it?

      • exgolfer says:

        J23,

Do you really think that if GR/JH were calling deep pass patterns that Smith just wouldn’t throw them?

Even you can’t be that silly, can you?

    • Joe Cool says:

Smith doesn’t like passing deep unless it’s to Vernon Davis. And even then those shots are too far and few between. Alex has admitted he would rather play cautious than sling it around. It is what it is and a reason why the coaching staff was willing to kick him to the curb had they landed Peyton. This is what you get with Alex at QB as frustrating as it can be. All those 5 yard out routes and dumpoffs are too easy for a defense expecting it from Alex….. Need to force the defense to defend the full field.

      • 23jordan says:

        Joe,

You got it right. How easy is it to see that. Question, what do you do about it?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Sign Peyton Manning! He wouldn’t let his team play bad at all. He’d be 3-0 as the QB of any team. Oh wait…

      • 23jordan says:

He’d definitely be 3-0 with the Niners! Everyone on thi blog knows that. He’s a Bronco and they can’t defend. He deserves what he gets. Chose Denver over S.F.

      • MidWestNiner says:

He would have been flattened by Clay Matthews and Jared Allen. And since he can’t run, it would potentially be worse.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Payton can stop Percy Harvin too, Jordan? Can he kick a field goal a yard higher than Akers so it isn’t blocked? The “team” lost.

You sit in the weeds waiting for the Niners to lose so you can criticize AS. All the regulars on here know you don’t like him, but the fact you pin every loss and bad thing that happens offensively on him shows your knowledge. You must have something else to bring to the conversation.

    • angusinCanada says:

Uh….did you guys even watch the game? Vikes kept throwing safeties over the top once they got the big lead, took away the deep pass. Ha,rbaugh doesn’t call pass plays into the coverage, if you haven’t noticed over the last 20 games.

  7. 23jordan says:

That’s a quick release from Rogers! Wow.

    • Ribico says:

Apparently not quick enough. What’s the record for taking sacks in one half?

      • exgolfer says:

8, set last night by Rodgers*.

*I don’t really believe the record belongs to Rodgers, but some on this blog feel that sacks are the fault of the QB and I was taking a jab at them.

  8. Crab15 says:

Clay Mathews is fired up as usual. Good game so far.

    • 23jordan says:

      Crabs,

At least we know Russell Wilson can throw deep!

      • Crab15 says:

        23J – You’ve been loving Seattle/Russell for a while now, you’re not going to jump ship I hope. :-)
Give me names of your top 3 favorite Niners (not Seahawks) so I feel better.

      • 23jordan says:

        Crabs,

I’m not big on Russell. I do like the fact that he didn’t allow his height to hold him back. I like the fact that he’s a rookie and came in there and won that job. he’s still a rookie. He’s got a lot to learn and a lot of football ahead of him. but you have to respect what he’s done so far. The game is not too big for him. I wish we had him, but I wish we had a lot of guys.
        Top 3 Niners.

        1. Montana
        2. Steve Young
        3. Colin Kapernick

        Hahahaha!!!

      • JDT says:

        23jordan,

Don’t you also wish JJ is still with us ?

  9. ninermd says:

I’d rather read a bunch of no comments rather than these questions. Where’s the hard hitting questions from these guys? Give me a mic. I’d ask.
Coach: do you feel your team came out flat Sunday?
Coach: The focus didn’t look to be there. Why?
Coach: why no deep throws at times in the game?
Coach: what’s your problem with the media? Lol

  10. Crab15 says:

What a freaking disgrace! Those are ridiculously soft questions considering how bad the coaching was and the week effort by the players.
The New York media has balls! They would not let the coach off the hook after that pitiful performance.

  11. neal says:

Those questions sucked, no tough questions for Harbaugh.Basically who gives a crap questions.

  12. fesnyc says:

Harbaugh is a classic. Greatest CB in the game is out for the year, and he says it has no effect on the Jets. The guy gives nothing.

Seattle D looks pretty tough. Division games are going to be a dogfight this year. Strap it on, Niners.

  13. Jack Hammer says:

    Grant,

I understand your getting this out to everyone so they can see it for themselves. Is there anything that you have been working on that gets a little deeper than this?

  14. msclemons67 says:

Russel Wilson is looking very solid.

    • 23jordan says:

If Seattles pass rush is really like this, I think we need to start getting Kap some 1st team reps. We are going to need his escapability. This pass rush has Smith shaking in his boots in Youngstown right now.
Looks like after 3 games, the NFC west has the best defenses in the league!

      • MidWestNiner says:

Let’s ask Cam Newton about that. He should have a great insight into that after being pummeled by the Giants. Better yet, let’s ask Aaron Rodgers.

    • ribico says:

Yup, 110 yards in the air, the vast majority of which on 2 plays, one of which was a joke that should not have been allowed. Very solid. He did get W though, thats all that counts.

      • DS94everXev says:

        ribico

Every non-west coast team goes to Seattle thinking they’ll win because they are Seattle. They tend not too.

Seattle in Seattle is tougher than any team anywhere. That is why last years AS-MC pass last year to setup the win was such a big deal.

NO/GB/Baltimore/Dallas just don’t get it. Respect the West. And be scared to play in Seattle. AR looked freaked to start the 2nd half.

      • msclemons67 says:

I posted that in the 1st quarter when Russel was indeed looking solid.

You Smithers sure get touchy when anyone praises a QB other than the Precious.

  15. MidWestNiner says:

    Respect the NFC West!

  16. MontanaMan16 says:

AR is getting a taste of what AS went thru for years. He’s elite, I don’t get how this is happening!

  17. MidWestNiner says:

I love how people are blaming Alex Smith for the whole team, from the coaching on down, coming out flat in the Vikings game. Absolutely pitiful It’s only one loss people, not the end of the season.

    • DS94everXev says:

But no way are you surprised though. You can’t be since you were here after last years horrible season. I mean AS was the sole reason we lost 4 whole games. And not a part of the 14 wins.

This is par for the course Midwest. At least here it is.

    • Ribico says:

To be honest, it’s not “people”, its one person. But with the volume of his Alex postings it seems like the whole board.

    • 23jordan says:

We relied on the passing game and the QB. Bad idea. Should have stayed with the running game likecwe did against Green Bay and Detroit. Can’t afford to put too much of a load on Smith. He’s only carried the load for the end of one game in his career. JH learned his lesson. He won’t lean on Smith that heavily again.
The question is, ” Now that we know how tough the defenses are in this division, what is our QB gonna do about moving the football through the air? We will see very soon.

      • 23jordan says:

Look at GB now. They go to the tuning game to slow down the pass rush. We tried to trust our starting QB for too long. MISTAKE!

      • MidWestNiner says:

Amazing what happens when EVERYBODY on offense does their job.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Rodgers had ample room to run there on 3rd down. Let’s hang him for instead throwing too high.

      • 23jordan says:

        Midwest,

This isn’t about Rogers. He is not our QB. Though we diehard Niner fans wish he were. We are stuck with Alex. At least until the end of this year. I think he’s out of here this year. I hope Harbaugh has those Mattresses in Youngstown this week. help Smith with anticipating receivers getting open. he ordered them for Smith last year.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I know it isn’t about Rodgers. I’m just pointing he cost his team a touchdown. Every QB has bad games, but it’s no reason to hang them, especially after one game. I hope everybody on the offense does better against the Jets, including Smith.

    • MidWestNiner says:

It isn’t only on Alex Smith 23. Greg Roman needs to call a better game, the receiving corps need to catch better, and the OL needs to do their job. The whole team failed as a unit. Not just one guy only.

      • 23jordan says:

No drops yesterday Midwest. How many times did our QB change the play at the line??? We don’t know that, but we do know he has that option. He did stink it up yesterday though. The defense was not as good as they usually are but they gave Smith chances to make plays. he overthrew it an awful lot yesterday and he missed a ton of open receivers as well. No, it wasn’t just his fault. Staley is becoming a problem. He’s getting beat quite a bit these days. Gore fumbled for the 1st time in a ton of games. However24 points is not an insurmountable lead. Smith had his chances, he said himself, he didn’t get it done. Overthrew Moss 3 times, one for 6 for sure. The jets have a better defense than the Vikings. We’ll see what happens this week.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The whole has to do better. I agree Smith stunk, but so did everybody else. 0 sacks?! Two unnecessary roughness calls?! Gore getting only 12 carries?! Moss not being utilized by Roman?! Staley getting owned more often than not?! It is on the whole team to prove that Sunday was a fluke and not a telling sign.

      • 23jordan says:

Midwest, you are right bro. You are absolutely right. Very good points.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, MidWest does call it straight and always has done so. Did you focus on the drops last week as much as the QB play this week? Fair and balanced? Let’s see how they respond against the Jets.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah, it’s unfortunate the WR’s can’t get open long. VD is the only consistent deep threat and he needs to help the OL. We need more MM and KW – speedy quick guys that can get the 9ers some YAC!

      • Crab15 says:

        Hofer/Griper – I have a challenge for you pal.
No WR/MC bellyaching until the live blog on Sunday.
You in? You can’t do it.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Already making excuses that guys can’t get open long. Wow. Keep the excuses rolling. We have multiple deep threaghts now, the line is giving him time, 2nd year under Harbaugh. You said yourself last year Hof, this year no excuses. Don’t embarrass yourself.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, you know better! I only deal in facts not hyperbole like you and your bud Jordo. If you and Jordo (especially Jordo) would deal mainly in facts you wouldn’t look so bad when you comment. Give me an example where MC has run away from one DB ball in hand or not. I think MC has excellent hands and catches everything thrown his way but he’s not explosive. We’ll see.

      • DS94everXev says:

        hof

He’s (MC) looked explosive in the first 2 games. Turning up-field quickly.

Last year, his play against the Rams. He threw a stiff arm right into that Ram defender, and never lost any velocity on his way to scoring a TD.

        That good enough for you?

And stop with the stupid 23J imitation quotes. You don’t look any better doing it than him.

      • 23jordan says:

        Hofer,

Here are some facts for you.

        1. After 8 years, Alex Smith severely lacks field vision.

2.After 8 years, Alex Smith still overthrows wide open receivers 6 yards away from him.

        3. After 7 years, Alex Smith knew he needed help on his footwork.

        4. After 7 years, Alex Smith still misses wide open receivers downfield.

        5. After 7 years, Alex Smith has more support out of sympathy for what he’s been through in his career, than for his accomplishments as a player.

        6. I don’t feel sorry for Alex Smith or his lack of playmaking skills.

        7. Alex Smith can’t carry the 2012 San Francisco 49ers on his arm for any 1 game.

        8. Alex Smith is a game manager.

        9. There are several toys on our offense now that Alex talks about using but says he has to make better throws to those toys.

        10. It is difficult to get YAC when you don’t have separation or you have to waste time trying to make a catch that is not thrown to you in stride.

        11. you can’t be an elite QB if you still are jittery in the pocket and can’t compose yourself to make a solid throw under pressure.

        12. Putting 8 in the box and taking daring Alex Smith to beat you deep is a problem for our Niners.

        13. The jets will have the same defensive scheme for us next week.

        14. The jets defense is better than Minnesota’s.

        15. Our offensive coaches have their work cut out, A
        Ong with Alex Smith.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

DS, at times. I think MC is an outstanding possession guy but he’s not a YAC guy. He’s not going to make anyone miss the tackle and doesn’t have the speed to take it to the house. Not a diss just need to get the speed guys in the game (mismatches) mainly for RM on the other side.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, it really doesn’t matter. JH and staff like AS and he is following their directions to the letter. If you have problems with that contact them. They make the decisions not us on the blog. So curb your attitude!

      • DS94everXev says:

AS is the QB. A QB guru HC hasn’t found another one better. Including Johnson who you claimed was the starter in the offseason.

Blah, blah, blah. Tell me. Has AS won any games in 8 years? Blah, blah, blah. Have you cared? Blah, blah, blah. Why are you still here?

      • 23jordan says:

        DS,

Notice I said DS. Is that you talking smack? I like that DS. However, you didn’t dispute any of the facts. Yes I know, the truth hurts. See, we can disagree without all the name calling. That doesn’t change the 15 facts!

      • MidWestNiner says:

One game 23 doesn’t spell soon for the whole season. The one true fact (and only fact that matters) is the offense as a whole needs to get better and play better. And the defense can’t lay an egg like it did.

      • DS94everXev says:

        hof

In a small sample size this year, I’ve seen MC get seperation from the guy covering him. He isn’t fast enough to out run the guy in front of him like a VD.

But, that is where VD/KW/AJ?/RM (stil gets the cushion) come into play. If those guys can move the secondary back some away from MC when he gets the pass, MC can get something decent. And if he uses his arsenel more (stiff arm, MC is a strong kid) MC will get YAC like Boldin (sp?) Baltimore WR. He isn’t as big, but MC with some speed and his stiff arm will get YAC. Not the same style as KW (did he look good returning or what!), but who cares.

MC can get YAC here. I’ve said all along, this Niners team has a lot of new weapons. Give them time to figure it out. We will. Give it time hof.

      • jgwindsor says:

the Oline is not giving enough time for deep passess…AS is getting hit on 3 step drops…

      • exgolfer says:

        Rib,

        Well said.

        DS,

True, the Seahawks are a better team than people think, something the rest of the league will learn this year, but the only reason the Packers lost, was they were screwed by the refs. And not only on the non-TD catch.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Ex

No. The refs are A reason. The fact they couldn’t score more is the reason. GB could have played better. Had they, the refs are inconsequential to the outcome of winner/loser.

Close games can be determined by 1 play. People make mistakes. If GB comes out saying we did everything we could, they are lying. Seattle had the lead for most of that game. They forced GB to play the game on their terms. That will result in winning a lot of the time. GB never had control of the pace to that game. Their last posession proved it. They had control of the ball on the last pass. That is it.

But no way are you surprised though. You can’t be since you were here after last years horrible season. I mean AS was the sole reason we lost 4 whole games. And not a part of the 14 wins.

This is par for the course Midwest. At least here it is.

NO NO NO!!! Alex smith gets all the credit for 14 wins. Remember? Keep digging that hole bs

  18. Hoferfan67 says:

Interesting. The elite ARodgers has been walking into sacks and holding the ball way too long. Hmm.

    • 23jordan says:

Must be something in the water in that 2005 QB draft. But how does Rogers handle adversity?? We will see. We know how the Niner QB handled it yesterday. NOT!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Maybe they will trade for CK since he was sssoooo good during the PRESAEASON! BBBWWAAAHHHAAAA! LOL!

      • MidWestNiner says:

After one game this season 23? As my two-year old niece says, “Are yu kidin me?”

      • 23jordan says:

        Midwest,

Just calling it like I see it every game. Jets next week. We will see if it was an aberration. I’m warning you though. That was Alex Smith you saw yesterday. We relied on him too much yesterday. Gotta take the ball out of his hands.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I saw a poorly prepared team, not just one poorly prepared guy 23. I was one of the few here that predicted that the Vikings would be harder to beat than most realized. Unfortunately, I didn’t expect a debacle. I’m not focusing on just Smith but the offense as a whole. They need to execute better when they play the Jets next.

      • 23jordan says:

        Midwest,

Go back and look at my prediction. I predicted that Minnesota would beat us exactly the way they did on defense. I said put 8 in the box and dare Smith to beat us deep. He can’t do it, and he didn’t do it. Nothing deep.

      • MidWestNiner says:

One of the posters one here pointed out that the safeties one the Vikings D played deep, therefore nullifying the deep threat. But I still would have liked to see them test that. That’s not on only Smith, but Roman and Harbaugh as well. Roman needs to call a better game, and Harbaugh needs to insert Moss into the game more.

      • DS94everXev says:

        midwest

Maybe RM hasn’t earned the extra snaps. You earn your playing time on this team. That applies to RM as well.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“I saw a poorly prepared team, not just one poorly prepared guy”

I saw a team that got away from it’s identity offensively, and struggled most of the day to catch up. The last time I remember them having such a pass heavy start to a game was against New York last year in the regular season, and the outcome was pretty much the same, no TD’s.

This offense and in turn, Alex Smith thrives on balance, and they were anything but on Sunday with 4o called passes and 17 called runs. By not establishing the run they took away their best pass option, play action.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

A few of these people act as though RM is the player he was 5 years ago. I got news for them…he’s not! He hasn’t used his vertical leap and he catches the ball and immediately dives to the turf. He can still be used as a weapon but to act as though he is more than he is just is living in a dream world. That’s why MM and KW need more touches. How can you see KW split the defenders on the run back and not see a role in this offense?

      • MidWestNiner says:

I know he isn’t Hof, but he needs to be utilized better.
He may have not earned his snaps DS, but he isn’t being used well either. This has got to change.
You just summed up a poorly prepared Niners team Jack.

      • Jack Hammer says:

You’re right MidWest. Putting the emphasis on the pass with Smith at QB is not a good idea. You need to establish the run so you can use play action, which helps him by limiting the number of reads.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Thing is, that isn’t a knock on Smith or the team considering some of the last Super Bowl winners. Each have had to find some sort of balance one offense in order to get to the summit. The Niners just need to do th same thing.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        MidWest,

Wasn’t meant as a knock on Smith, just reality.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I know it wasn’t Jack. I was just saying balance one all facets is currently the thing that has won’t championships.

  19. Sean in Canada says:

Ribico, if I’m not mistaken, you live in the NY area, correct? Was checking the weather for the game and am wondering if I need to pack an ark? Sounds like it’ll be wet.

    • ribico says:

Sean, 10% chance of rain in East Rutherford on Sunday is what weather.com is reporting, 40% on Saturday if you are planning on any sightseeing.

      • Nick says:

Sightseeing in New Jersey? Now that’s a thought.

      • ribico says:

Once you get out of the turnpike-oil refinery zone, the rest of the state is awesome. No, really. :)

But my sightseeing comment was directed more to NYC. You know, that city near to where the New York teams play.

  20. DS94everXev says:

I betcha AR is happy we wasn’t drafted by the Niners.

8 times going up in Seattle. He’s had fun I bet. See his eyes to start the 2nd half? He’s scared. For good reason.

Chicago/Minn have nothing on Seattle in Seattle.

    • Adam707 says:

“I betcha AR is happy we wasn’t drafted by the Niners.” Well duh he has a championship.

      • DS94everXev says:

Good thing. Because if he got sacked like this with his OL and was behind our OL, he’d need that ring to remind him of his Super Bowl. He’s not going to remember a lot of his career if he came to Seattle every year.

8 sacks! Some guys would hate AS a ton if that happened in 1 half. You know it.

      • Adam707 says:

If AS brought a championship to SF, people would forget his sacks, and blame the line

      • DS94everXev says:

AS will get blamed for every bad play by more than 1 here. 1 or 10 Super Bowls ain’t changing that.

    • Nick says:

      DS
why do you hate Rogers so much?

      • 23jordan says:

        Nick,

Because Rogers is 10 times the QB Alex smith is.

      • ribico says:

Myself, I hate every player not playing on my team. Is that a hard concept to understand? I guess it is for those who hate players *on* their team more than those on the opposition.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

Please show me a post where I call AR feminine names as a means to insult or to demean him. Or infer he is racist because he idolized JM a white QB.

That is called hate. Please use the correct terms. It actually does matter.

And ribico has a decent reply. Remember how I was excited about Owusu in pre-season? The moment he left, he wasn’t a favorite. If he returns he will be once more. You won’t believe me, but I cheer for Niner players and not for other teams players because I am a Niner fan.

      • Nick says:

        Jordan,
I think you hit the nail on the head.

        DS
Could it have anything to do with a superiority/inferiority complex when it comes to AS vs AR?

        Ribico
If AR was playing againts the Niners, I wouldn’t cheer for him that particular week. But why hate a player simply because he’s on a another team? Doesn’t make sense.

      • DS94everXev says:

No. How about I am tired of reading posts of AR is so great on a Niner blog. If only we had AR…

Besides AS just kicked AR butt. This was the first time AS team was remotely as good as AR’s team, and AS’s team won.

This falls on years of this blog blabbering about AR. You created what you call me hating AR. If this blog didn’t bring up AR so much, I really wouldn’t care at all.

        Question for you

Why do you care at all if I like/dislike/love/hate/indifferent to any non-Niner? This is a Niners blog. Not a GB blog. Why do you defend a non-Niner so fiercely? What if AS ends his career with more titles than AR? Will you look back and say that time spent defending a non-Niner QB was so worth it?

      • Nick says:

I’ll admit it, I like AR because I’m a Cal alum. I still would NOT cheer for him though when he plays the Niners.

There’s no reason to go on ripping another player in an attempt to make AS look good. Get over it. AS was the 1st pick of the 2005 draft and hasn’t lived up to it yet. AR has. End of story.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

No. You need to get over the fact that AR isn’t here. He isn’t a Niner. Don’t expect any love his way. AS is here. That is the end of the story my friend.

      • ribico says:

        >>But why hate a player simply because he’s on a another team? Doesn’t make sense.

        Just as I predicted.

      • ribico says:

        >>why do you hate Rogers so much?

And also he’s a big time welcher. Shouldn’t make promises if he’s not going to keep them. Remind you of somebody?

      • DS94everXev says:

        ribico

Why hate a player who is on the team if Nick is wondering why one should hate a player not on the team?

I’ll like Nick to post that question to a few here.

      • Nick says:

        Ribico

You used the word hate. I think that’s too strong of a word and I doubt you really hate somebody simply because of football.

You – along with a few other Alextremist – have this fantasy that those who are objective of Alex Smith’s game and those who call it like it is are hating on him. That’s just moronic. Alex is a standup individual, good teammate, and – from all indications – a solid family man. I’m critical at times because his on field performance may not be up to par. That’s not hating. That’s wanting the team to be better.

  21. Chicago49er says:

I respect Jim Harbaugh for not showing his cards and pointing fingers, however the questions asked during this press conference sucked!!! How about:

Coach, defense was not able to put enough pressure on the Vikings QB, you had 0 sacks, and vikings appeared to be able to move the ball on the defense what was the main reason for the poor defensive performance!!!

Was the block kick due to a missed assignment or just a great play by the vikings?

This team has played with poise in the past year and suddenly you have One INT by Alex and two fumbles, do you think the players under estimated the Vikings?

    • Crab15 says:

Chicago – Those are great questions for Harbaugh, too bad the Bay Area (besides Grant & Lowell) have a bunch of wuss reporters. Where’s the braveness?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Would you ask somebody hardball questions like that after they just visited a children’s hospital?

      • Crab15 says:

L.A. P.D. had to ask OJ tough questions after he butchered two people.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Bad example there Crab. One is a killer while the other is meeting with kids that are fighting various illnesses and some even for their very lives.

      • Crab15 says:

MidWest – Yes it was but NFL football press conferences are a separate topic.
Believe me, I know about children fighting for their lives so don’t even go there with anything about being insensitive.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I’m not even trying to Crab. I’m just saying that a reporter might not be as inclined to grill Harbaugh after that visit. Tomorrow however will most likely be another story. Don’t worry. Harbaugh will be grilled this week.

    • Chicago49er says:

Crab the questions listed above were just reflecting the outcome of the game. This is the NFL a multi billion dollar industry and the fans should hear the head coaches perspective on why our team looked like a door mat by a team that just lost to the colts! I am moving on to the next game but however there are many niner fans that have a real bad taste in their mouths for the poor performance.

      The good news :
-We still have 13 more games to go
-We did not play our best game and still had a chance to win
      - This offense will get better

      The bad news:
      - Arizona is 3-0
      - Seattle is 2-1

      GO Niners

  34. BigP says:

wow that was bad!!! I want to see the post game… GB gets jobbed

The fans need to protest all games next week and not go!!! make a statement fans!!!

  42. 23jordan says:

Here’s the kicker fellas. THE REVIEW REFEREES IN THE BOOTH ARE THE REGULAR REVEIW REFEREES!!! THEY ARE NOT REPLACEMENT REFEREES!!!!

  43. Hoferfan67 says:

I hope SYoung goes nuts like he did last week. The owners are taking advantage of the popularity of the sport and making it a mockery! Sham!

  44. Hov says:

WTF these refs are crazy how is that a touchdown

  45. Hoferfan67 says:

SYoung is ready to go vocal!

  46. MidWestNiner says:

If these refs are still here come the Super Bowl, there will be heads that roll.

  47. BigP says:

    From the Washington Post:

Goodell said he believes the league can continue to use the replacements until a deal is reached with the referees. “We believe we can,” Goodell said. “They did a very credible job and they’re only going to get better.”

Were his lips moving when he said this?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

RG is in denial. He doesn’t care about the fans that pay big big dollars. The owners and RG are arrogant as hell!

    • 49erGirl says:

Yes – But the voice belonged to Jerry Jones.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

If viewership and attendance dropped you’d see the regular refs back almost immediately, period end of story.

Don’t go to the game or watch it on TV if you don’t like what the league is doing. It’s one thing to get all lathered up on the internet it’s another to actually stand by your principles and boycott a tainted product.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Get real coffee

The only way anything can force the NFL to do anything about it like NOW is if theplayers put on a strike NOW. That ain’t happening.

But if it did, that would force the NFL to get new players in uniform ready to play in 5 days. And on top of that, a much lower attendance. Fans aren’t going to see theses guys at the prices they will pay for the real players during these hard economic times.

The ratings would take a dive, and the NFL would actually be in trouble. That is the only way to force the NFL to act NOW. But it isn’t in the cards.

      • 23jordan says:

        DS,

I’ve been telling you what the people up here really think about you. Now Coffee finally had the guts to say it as well. You are uninformed about 98% and your posts and football knowledge underscore that. Time to retire yourself on this blog. Not trying to be mean. Just being honest.

      • Chris says:

Coffee I agree with you. If people stopped watching/going to the games, the owners would be more pressed to negotiate.
That being said, I don’t think the replacement officials are doing that bad of a job. I believe the white hats are doing a particularly poor job of managing their crews.
Last night for example, the back judge got the call right. The line judge 15 yards out got the play wrong. Instead of conversing with the two judges, the referee assumed (in my opinion) that the play could be reviewed and overturned on review.
I believe there are too many nuances in the rule book for any referee to know them all 7 weeks into the season.
The old referees got calls wrong too. Each year we complain about calls. I believe the NFL just needs better referees to manage the judges across the field. Just my opinion though.

  48. AES says:

Roger Goodell needs to call an emergency meeting with every owner tonight and NOT allow anyone to leave until an agreement has been made to end the referee lock-out!

Total bush league over the last three weeks with the ultimate ‘blackeye’ coming tonight.

At the present rate of the poor officiating, every replacement referee will need to travel with personal bodyguards.
Sad day for the NFL and every owner should be held accountable!

    • AES says:

Watching coach McCarthy doing his best to keep his composure during his presser. Class act.
Kudos to coach McCarthy for quickly deflecting the miserable officiating and keeping to convo centered on the play.

Not bad for a coach who just got robbed!

  49. Crab15 says:

That ref was staring right at Tate when he shoved #37 down. Same ref is the one who signaled touchdown. Horrific!
Goodell will be busy this week. Worst non P.I. call EVER and horrible TD call.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Busy telling the coaches and players to lay off the scan refs. Just the owners’ puppet that he is.

    • 23jordan says:

      Crabs,

Hard not to like Russell bro. He’s a baller.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

130 yds on 21 passes. Figures anyone but AS. ppftt!

      • MidWestNiner says:

That doesn’t change the fact that’s not a TD 23. He played good, but he should have lost.

      • Crab15 says:

23J – That ref will get be getting death threats.
He will not see the field again, too dangerous.
The Cheesehead blogs must be goin nuts.

      • BigP says:

        How is Wilson a baller?

      • 23jordan says:

        Big P,

Russell Wilson is a baller because he is a playmaker. He is a rookie and he took the starting job for the Seahawks from a free agent QB that was supposed to be their QB of the future. He’s not playing like a rookie. The moment doesn’t appear to be too big for him. His team could very easily be 3-0, whether they deserve it or not. He’s doing his part. That 25 yard dart he threw to Sidney last night, Alex Smith doesn’t have that throw in his bag. The kid is barely 5-10 and he’s already playing with the poise of a veteran. The kid has excellent pocket presence and you saw him move around in the pocket and scramble for yardage last night.
He is a playmaker. That last play of the game, he moved around in the picket and threw a pass up there to give him team a chance to win the game. Yes, it was a pick but guess what, they won the game and if he doesn’t make a play out of something that’s not supposed to work, Seattle doesn’t win. Yeah Big P, he is a baller.

  50. Nick says:

Just in the last 8 minutes of the game, here are the bad calls by the refs:
    1. Refs took away an INT from GB
    2. Refs made terrible pass interference calls on GB and Seattle
    3. That last play

  51. 23jordan says:

The toilet bowl next week. The PAckers(1-2) vs The Saints( 0-3) !!

  52. Crab15 says:

I can’t get over that ref. He was looking right at Golden Tate when he shoved #37 to the ground. Are you kiddin me?

  53. MidWestNiner says:

The NFL has insulted my intelligence.

Young has some very scathing things to say about the refs, but the zinger belongs to Dilfer. Ouch!

  54. Crab15 says:

Hofer – You never responded to my challenge earlier.
    Loosen up bro.

  55. Sean in Canada says:

What a disgrace! If I wanted to watch bush league football and officials I could watch canadian football. The Packers got screwed. How is it that the refs are getting worse each week?

Come on NFL, you’re better than this!

  56. DS94everXev says:

Well, that is what you call home field advantage.

    Seattle has it. No doubt.

  57. Chris says:

There are so many great minds here who have so much more knowledge about the NFL and it’s rules than me, so I’ll ask the question here. I have two actually.

The first is: when the offensive team has a penalty under 1 minute there is a ten second run off. Does that rule apply on a Delay of Game when offensive team is trying to run out the clock as GB was trying to do before they called the timeout and punted?

The second is: Can’t the Player’s Association sue the NFL regarding these replacement referees? The Players Association has profit sharing revenues with the owners. These replacement referees are damaging the image and profitability of the league. So, if they ( The players union) filed a suit against the league on those grounds, could they force the hand of the NFL when it comes to negotiating with the referees?

    • Medic One says:

The answer to your question regarding the NFL and the ten second run off is yes they can take the penalty and there can be a ten second run off. However, the defense can elect to decline the ten second run off and instead take just the yard penalty.

    • Crab15 says:

Chris – Less than 1 minute left, if offense has delay of game penalty there should be 5 yard penalty and 10 seconds run off clock.
I have no idea on your other question.

    • MidWestNiner says:

I believe the NFLPA has done that already Chris. Unfortunately I don’t have the link to it, but I read it on the ESPN website after week one.

  58. MidWestNiner says:

What was a great MNF game was completely and utterly ruined by the very inept calling by the refs.

    • Replacement Referee says:

Yeah, I have Golden Tate on my fantasy team….so what?

    • claude balls says:

      @ MidwestNiner:

Does this make you feel any better?

Who here is naive enough to think that the NFL’s impending announcement will acknowledge that the use of replacement referees has been a disaster and that the league has settled its dispute with the referee’s union?

This isn’t getting resolved in time for week 4. I wouldn’t put much hope in it getting resolved in time for weeks 5 or 6 either.

    • Replacement Referee says:

If it makes you feel any better, I was going to throw a flag for offsides on GB anyway…SEA would have had another shot from 10 yards closer.

  59. AES says:

Steve Young : “A revered game that has been built to something great is being reduced and dragged down. The owners need to find a way to settle this even tonight.”

I don’t think that it would be a far-fetched to say that after tonight the owners are jeapardizing the welfare of these referees by allowing them to take the field. We may be on the verge of seeing the type of violence that takes place with international soccer games.
Sadly, this is where the officiating is taking the game and the owners must take responsibility.

  60. dangle says:

Wow, I know the refs handed the seahawks that game with several ridiculous calls, but even excluding the outcome of MNF, the seahawks and the cardinals look like they will be serious competition this year. I underestimated them severely so far. Both have pretty spectacular defenses. The NCF west will Not be a pillow fight this year. They both have really good pass rush which could be problematic for our offense. No reason to panic but its time for our coaching staff to buckle up.

  61. MidWestNiner says:

Golden Tate just proved he belongs on Pete Carroll team. What a loser.

    • LSX says:

Golden Tate is absolute garbage. I hated him in college and I hate him in the NFL. I can’t believe that overrated bum got drafted so high. He is slow, can’t run good routes, can’t catch, and he’s a total douchebag.

      • DS94everXev says:

        No disagreement here LSX.

        +1

      • Houston 9er says:

What did Tate do that makes him a DB? I must have missed something.

      • LSX says:

        Houston,

He tries to play the game like Hines Ward. Helmet-to-helmet shots on defenders away from the play who aren’t even paying him attention. He had some douchey Winslow-esque quotes in college. Hell, just watch how he played last night and listen to his post-game interview.

Above all, he just isn’t good. There isn’t a single receiver on our team he is better than, including the guys we lost off our practice squad.

  62. Medic One says:

In defense of the referee, not the official who called the last play of the game a TD, his hands were tied by NFL replay rules.
The referee under replay is not allowed to go back and review the play to see who had possession of the ball. That means the referee under replay can not go back to the last play of the game and determine that GB had indeed intercepted the ball. He could only go under the hood and see if the ball hit the ground or the player stepped out of bounds or any other reason that the receiver was ineligible to be the first to touch the ball. He is only reviewing that the ball crossed the goal line, the ball didn’t hit the ground, the receiver was in bounds during the play, and that the receiver didn’t step out of bounds prior to touching the ball. He can not establish a change of possession in that replay.
    .

    • Nick says:

Yes, that’s true on all questionable scores. However, GB could have challenged the call (don’t remember if they had a time out at the time) and that would have forced the booth officials to review the meret of the call on the field.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Doesn’t the capability to challenge a play disappear after the two minute warning Nick?

      • claude balls says:

        @MidWestNiner:

You are correct. In addition, the play was reviewed.

      • Nick says:

Thanks MWN, I forgot about that. But there is s difference – I believe – between a scoring review and challenged call, but I could be wrong.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Nick,

Starting this year all scoring plays are automatically reviewed, and per the regular official ESPN had in the booth last night, if the ruling on the field was simultaneous possession it cannot be overruled by replay.

      • Nick says:

        Thanks Jack,
By the way, your boy Bruce Irvin had a nice game last night.

    • 23jordan says:

      Not true Medic,

If there had been undiputed evidence that Jennings had mad that pick and the ball was his, the reply referee coulee reversed the call. He didn’t change the call because he didn’t feel lokehe had that evidence.

      • Medic One says:

Actually, after I posted this, I saw two seperate referees who both were retired and had a combined 53 years of experience* say the same thing I wrote. You can not review “possession” on a scoring play. It would have been nice had he been able to, but he wasn’t.
*Source: ESPN and NFL Network. Gerry Austin. Mike Pereira.

      • Medic One says:

Here is the actual quote :… But that doesn’t matter. Once the call was made, it wasn’t subject to replay review, as longtime NFL official Gerry Austin explained to ESPN. Nor could a booth review have nullified the touchdown on the grounds of offensive pass interference, which was also obvious on replay. “All replay can determine is if the score is correct,” said Austin. “They’re both in the end zone, both with the ball, the ball never touches the ground. They cannot, in replay, determine who has possession of the ball.”

I understand that the NFL commissioner issued a 3rd statement saying that all of a sudden the play was reversible, I believe that is a new interpretation of the rule to save the image of the NFL. As of last night, the adobe acrobrat file of the NFL rules showed that the play was a simultaneous catch was not reviewable.

So, it appears the rules are subjective to interpretation and amendable as needed by the commissioner.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Medic One:

That’s odd because the NFL said the opposite in its official statement regarding last night’s game:

Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.

      • Medic One says:

I am certainly in the realm of imperfection and could have been wrong. I thought I heard their official statement was that the play was not reviewable. There was so much contraversy and commentary last night, I certain could have misquoted.

        Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 states:

Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

You’ll notice there is no mention of endzone or field of play.

Under rule 15 section 9 (c) 7 it goes into nonreviewable plays. “Note: Non-reviewable plays include but are not limited to:”

Section 15 Section 9 covers instant replay.

  63. MidWestNiner says:

I wonder if there is any way we can get the players and fans to boycott the NFL unless these refs get replaced.

    • exgolfer says:

      MWN,

I want the real refs back as much as anyone, but what chance do you think there is that the players are going to miss game checks and more than a few fans who have ponied up hundreds of dollars for season tickets are going to let them go, unused?

      I’ll tell you, no chance.

  64. Grumpy Guy says:

Refs should never decide a game. Certainly, THESE refs should never decide a game.

  65. LSX says:

I was seriously laughing like crazy at the end of the Seattle game, and I’m sure the REAL refs were sitting at home doing the same. The NFL has made their bed. They need to end this NOW before it becomes an even bigger nightmare. Bring the real refs back ASAP. The replacements have been awful so far, and I feel that this is the icing on the cake.

If I was a Packers fan, I would be so pissed right now. As much as I hate them, I feel sorry for them right now.

    • DS94everXev says:

      LSX

I’ll never feel sad for the Packers unless a person is actually hurt.

Seattle beat the tar out of the Packers. Their last offensive posession was a joke. They had a chance to seal the game regardless of the refs sucking. They failed. If the Pack don’t think they didn’t do what they had to do (offense in particular), they’ll lose more than they’ll win.

  66. Crab15 says:

That touchdown covered the point spread. Whoever bet GB must be devastated.
GB was 3.5 point favorites, it was 12-7 before that last play.

    • msclemons67 says:

I heard on Dan Patrick’s radio show (so it must be true… maybe) that 60% of the money in Vegas was on the Packers.

Vegas always wins in the end.

  67. blazer says:

The bottomline is that Seattle is now tied with the 49ers in the Western Division of the NFL, with Arizona currently in 1st place in the division.

  68. ninermd says:

This is for ds and others who like to bring up sacks as Alex smiths failures in the past and want to loop in opinions on how Aaron Rodgers would have sucked as bad.

AR 72 starts. Sacked 176 times
AS 73 starts. Sacked 182 times.

Look pretty damn close don’t you think? Now I know we don’t need to get into other stats and Super Bowl wins. I’m just saying know what you’re talking about. Now I know you want to go on about coaching, and talent, and OC’s, and AR had time to sit and learn. “Which is crap IMO” I just want to make the point that AR has been blessed with great offensive lines like smith too. Just sayin!

    • ribico says:

      >>Which is crap IMO

Bill Walsh? pffft. Pete McCulley could have down the same thing with that team. Wow, you really understand nothing about successful franchises do you?

Actually, I know you do, you just couldn’t resist making an assinine statement as a dig to our current QB, could you?

      • DS94everXev says:

        ribico

You read md’s post expecting different? You are a hopeful one.

md really is screwed no matter what. He doesn’t defend AS at all from dorks who think AS sucks. He says AS is top 7. Hates those who think/thought all along AS is a top QB. Agrees with pretty much every statement that AS isn’t good or gives him credit. But thinks he’s top 7. What?

None of any of that makes sense. He’s here hating. Then it makes sense.

      • ninermd says:

I DON’T believe every qb has to sit to succeed. Dan Marino, JM, Cam Newton, Flaco, elway, Manning bros, and so and so on. I’m not saying they will come in and blow up the first year, but these guys didn’t need 5 years to do so. That’s why the sitting and learning crap doesn’t work with me. NOT every qb needs that.

And ds. Defend AS? From what? I’m not his savior, I’m not his family member, I’m not his teammate. Neither are you. Those who want to question his play have every right and SOME cause to do so. I root for smith to do well. That’s all a fan should and have to do. I will never be as pathetic as you and your defense on a certain player. I support the TEAM!!! Defend Alex Smith. Ha ha haaaaa

      • 23jordan says:

        Md,

His play the last 7 + years is indefensible. He’s simply not very good. Your top 7 prediction wasn’t either. You’re my guy and I admire you for your stance on the top 7 wish. But that’s exactly what it was. A wish. All wishes don’t come true.
There is far too much talent at QB in the NFL to even think Smiyh could be close to top 7. I keep going back to the same thing. If NOBODY wanted Smith in free agency, what does that really say for Smith. It says that Smiths limited success last year was due to JH system and our defense and special teams. Not every coach in the league can change Smiths diaper. Sometimes, whether Smith knows it or not, he does have to go make a play.
Smith said he didn’t like it when coaches would tell him to “Go make a play!” They felt like he could, he was the #1 overall pick. That’s the difference between Smith and the elites. When the original play breaks down, the elites go make a play. Alex feels like he should wait for the next play call. He doesn’t like that pressure of making a play. It’s because he’s failed more times than not. Last week, Smith needed to go make a play. He couldn’t. He can’t and more times than not, he won’t. He needs the perfect call that has VD in single coverage on a defender single covered. That’s it, that’s all. How about Kyle Williams deep, Ginn deep, Crabtree deep, Moss deep, Manningham deep????? NOT!!

      • claude balls says:

@ ninermd: I wouldn’t start worrying about your bet just yet. The current rankings of NFL QBs, using the league’s official passer rating stat:

        http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=PASSING

Alex Smith is ranked No. 7, even after his mediocre performance in Minnesota. That ranking is an actual fact. It’s also further proof that, once again, 23welcher doesn’t know what he is talking about. Some things never change, and the welcher’s schtick is one of them.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        Claude,
Throwing that crap out there is further proof that you don’t know jack about football. You are just some nerd that misses debating people. You miss ” your game “. So you try to talk football. It’s a joke.
Alex has elite weapons now. Like Hofer said no excuses. Smith now is near the bottom third in yards per pass. Still just playing safe. No chemistry with wide receivers. His ranking is based on high percentage short passes and low turnovers. We need more. Flawed rating system.

      • ninermd says:

J23…. Cool that we don’t agree on my prediction. But I’m sticking with it. He had a bad game, and I’m hoping to see him stretch the field more, that’s a small task from before where he had so much more to improve on. He’ll get there. I’m not trippin. I know you’re not a big fan, and I am not ready to anoint him JM or anything, but the way he improved last season deserves some credit and rooting IMO. I’ll continue to roll with smith and see if he can still improve as a qb. Big strides last season and after this season we will see if he made more or hit his ceiling. But again gotta roll with him this season. He earned that from me.

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

So you say, but since you’ve continually been wrong about Smith, just like your bff, 23welcher, you have zero credibility on the subject, just like your bff, 23welcher.

Passer rating correlates to winning at a much higher percentage than does gross passing yardage or even passing yards/play. Other than turnover margin, it’s probably the stat most correlative to winning.* The stats you stubbornly care so much about are of lesser importance to the outcome of football games. I’m sorry that you can’t seem to comprehend any of the foregoing, but that’s not my problem.

Nor is it my problem that you obviously don’t understand or appreciate Jim Harbaugh’s football philosophy. Smith is playing the game exactly how Harbaugh wants it played. That you don’t like Harbaugh’s style of football and desperately want lots of shiny passing yards is both irrelevant and pointless. Harbaugh is the head coach, and he’s been successful everywhere he has coached. You, despite all your alleged football knowledge, don’t have a job coaching the 49ers, any NFL team or any football team at any level. As a result, Harbaugh is unlikely to change his philosophy because you prefer a different style of football. For most people, that probably would be enough to make them reconsider their stubborn adherence to a questionable opinion. But not you.

So, call me all the names you want in some vain attempt to marginalize me, but don’t think it changes the fact that you are willfully ignorant.

I’m going to continue enjoying the 49ers’ continued success. You won’t be able to because it will mean you’ll have to admit you are wrong, and you apparently don’t have the stones to do that. What you will do is poke your head out gleefully when the team loses, blame it all on Alex Smith and then disappear back into your hole after the victories. Have fun with that. At least you’ll have 23welcher for company in the hole. I’m sure it will be cozy.

        ————————–
        * I hope that I am not going too deep for you here, but that’s probably why avoiding interceptions results in a higher passer rating.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Claude,
now who’s the one full of it? You JH’s best friend and confidant? How do you know AS is playing it how JH wants it played? Especially when AS so harshly criticized himself and his play?
Last year the Smithers ALL which means collectively settled on their favorite excuse which was that Smith needed weapons. Now with better weapons he is averaging a full yard less per completion.
I still stand by my statement that the 49ers picked up Moss in attempts to lure PM. Moss does not fit Smith’s game. He doesn’t look at the WR vertical route, can’t throw it accurately or confidently. Moss and Alex Smith make zero sense.
And it’s become such a joke that Hofer is now questioning Moss’s leaping ability lol. Right. Hofer should actually let RM attempt to fight for a ball before he throws that excuse out.
All these fancy toys and Smith is still Smith….. The 49ers deserve better. At some point if there isn’t improvement you got to give the kid a chance. The kid that Harbaugh found and drafted.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“Now with better weapons he is averaging a full yard less per completion.”

Bay you are comparing 16 games in 2011 to 3 games in 2012. If you don’t know how to use comparable stats/facts you shouldn’t use them.

I was disappointed in the playcalling against the vikes but I know the 9ers have the best team in the league and you’ll be saying the same thing come playoff time. I agree with MD, I still think AS will be a top 7 QB this year and his yds will increase but not at the cost of losing. Stay tuned and enjoy…

      • Jack Hammer says:

Bay says, “Now with better weapons he is averaging a full yard less per completion.”

No he’s not. He averaged 7.1 for last season and is at 7.0 through 3 games this year.

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

If you don’t think that Alex Smith is playing QB the way Harbaugh wants him to, then you aren’t paying attention. Then again, that wouldn’t be the first sign that you aren’t paying attention.

Another sign? You keep recycling the same uninformed crap even after other commenters have shown you that it’s complete crap. For example, you keep asserting that Smith can’t throw the deep pass with accuracy or confidence. On more than one occasion, including just yesterday, that assertion has been refuted.

        From http://blog.vikings.com/2012/09/20/defense-doesnt-want-to-turn-49ers-deep-passing-game-moss-loose/

A closer look, however, will tell you that San Francisco can move the ball with an explosive passing game when they put their mind to it. The number of completions of 20+ yards will not blow you away, but the 49ers efficiency in doing so does. In 2011, the 49ers were tied for the second fewest passing attempts of 21+ yards, yet they were tied for 9th in completion percentage and averaged 11.72 yards per attempt – more than Atlanta, New England and Philadelphia – on those passes. This year, San Francisco is once again tied for fewest pass attempts of 21+ yards, yet their tied for 3rd in completion percentage (50%) and QB Alex Smith has a 127.1 passer rating on those passing attempts.

By the way, Smith had a 111.4 rating on his 2011 deep pass attempts.

So, to answer your question, I’d say that, without question, you are the one who is full of it.

      • LSX says:

I wonder is Bay ever gets sick of being smacked around by Claude. Lord knows it’s happened enough times, you think Bay would have learned his lesson by now. Bay is like a dog that refuses to be house broken; he makes a no-no on the rug, and Claude rubs his nose in it.

If I were Bay, I would be too embarrassed to even post again.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

That’s yards/attempt. Bay is actually correct that Smith’s yards/completion average has dropped. The numbers from Sunday dropped his average by almost a yard/completion.

      • Jack Hammer says:

My bad. That’s what happens when you don’t dig deep enough. Moving on…

      • claude balls says:

        @ LSX:

Thanks, I think. I’m not sure what it says about me that I continue to try to housebreak a dog that refuses to be housebroken.

As for Bay posting again, he has written that he will stop posting if Smith plays like Smith (low on yards/attempt) in 2012 and the 49ers bring him back for 2013. Regardless of how well the team does this year, Bay said he would lose interest in the team under such a scenario.

Of course, 23welcher said he would stop posting altogether if Alex Smith was on the 49ers’ roster for 2012, and we all have seen how that worked out. The question is whether Bay is more honorable than 23welcher. I tend to think he is, but we won’t know for several more months.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

As you have repeatedly said, it’s still too early to form any lasting conclusions about anything this season. It’s probably also too early to be digging deep about anything.

Moving on sounds like a good idea.

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

If you look at each years passer rating rankings you’ll find the good QB’s at the top of the list and you’ll find the bad QB’s at the bottom of the list.

Just because the list doesn’t fit your “Smith sucks” narrative, doesn’t make it flawed.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        @ LSX,
why should I be embarrassed to post? Claude didn’t discredit a thing I said. He provided some data in attempts to do that. I happen to disagree with that data.
Smith is giving us more of the same. It wasn’t good enough last year so why should it be good enough this year? Especially with the defense early on no looking as dominant as last years?
I’m going to get off the subject now because we are only three games in. I’ve given Smith his kudos the first two games. However I did mention that even in winning his inability to look down field towards receivers and his penchant to check down too quickly still exist. This last game I didn’t see leadership ability, I didn’t see accurate throws, I saw once again another wide open touchdown missed, saw checkdowns galore. If you guys want to hang your hats on that, then go ahead. Harbaugh is up to his tricks again. Last year Smith was “elite” lol, this year he is an “expert in our offense”. Ok, if you say so.
        @ Exgolfer,
I don’t buy into the QB rating. Flawed system. Last year Smith ranked top ten in that system while being in the bottom 3 in scoring, yards and third down conversions. Sound like top ten to you? If the front office thought they truly had a “top ten” QB, then why did they play hardball with his contract and potentially let him walk? Why did they flirt with Manning? I’ll answer for you. Because what Smith did last year was not good enough. And with all the money they invested in new weapons, more of the same which is what he’s done so far is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

      • exgolfer says:

        Bay,

Let’s see if it’s not good enough at the end of the season.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Bay:

I happen to disagree with that data.

You “disagree” with the data? What does that mean? Are you saying the numbers were recorded or reported incorrectly? Did you track the same stats and come up with different numbers? If not, you can’t “disagree” with the data. Facts are facts.

Or, do you “disagree” with the data because it is not consistent with your subjective beliefs? When data is inconsistent with your subjective beliefs, it’s pretty much proof that those beliefs are wrong. Which brings us back to where we started.

PS – The 49ers ranked 11th in scoring, which is nowhere near near bottom 3. (See how I disagree with your reporting of that stat? That’s how one disagrees with a cited piece of datum.) Why do you keep getting basic facts wrong?

PPS – Why do you also continually fail to grasp that passing yards simply aren’t important, or at least aren’t as important as passer rating and low interception rate? It’s not very difficult to compare how each stat correlates to winning. I’ve done it for you on multiple occasions. Yet, somehow, you just don’t seem to get it. The only thing flawed around would appear to be your reasoning.

        Maybe that’s what LSX meant.

PPPS – You can type in capital letters all you want, but it doesn’t make your incorrect statements any less incorrect.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

        Claude,
Why are they working on refining an advanced QB rating system? Because the current system is flawed. The advanced QB rating system more so focuses on game changing stats. Not safe short game managing stats. the current system has Two QB’s listed in the top ten that don’t belong. Kolb and our Smith.
So if I choose to ignore a flawed QB rating system how is that different than you ignoring lack of production, historic league low third down conversions, lack of field vision, lack of attempts over 20 yards to WR?
Claude like I said, go sit in your nerd circle and debate with other nerds. I am a football fan. I don’t care about your cherry picked bits of information.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Bay:

Why are they working on refining an advanced QB rating system?

Who is “they”? As far as I know, the NFL is not revising the official passer rating formula.

the current system has Two QB’s listed in the top ten that don’t belong. Kolb and our Smith.

Says you. Why are you so sure they don’t belong? Smith had two very good games against GB and Detroit. I haven’t seen Kolb play, so I cannot comment on whether or not he belongs. That said, in 2011, 9 of the top 10 rated passers made the playoffs. The stat simply correlates to winning; it’s not flawed. To the extent it could be improved, I wouldn’t mind seeing the formula adjust for difficulty of schedule. Of course revising the 2011 numbers to account for the quality of defenses faced would only have served to improve Smith’s rating.

Besides, the season is only 3 weeks old. Let’s see who’s in the Top 10 midseason, and how well their teams are doing, before judging how reliable the stat is this year.

how is that different than you ignoring lack of production, historic league low third down conversions, lack of field vision, lack of attempts over 20 yards to WR?

Because those things either don’t correlate so highly to victory (all but field vision) and thus are less important, or are merely something you made up and for which you have no data to support (field vision).

I don’t care about your cherry picked bits of information.

I don’t think you know what “cherry-picked” means. The NFL’s official passer-rating statistic is anything but a cherry-picked stat. First, it incorporates several important aspects of passing efficiency – completion percentage, yards/attempt, TDs/attempt, and interceptions/attempt – so it doesn’t merely focus on a single part of the QB’s performance. Moreover, by it’s very construction, the formula allows for a meaningful comparison of QBs from high volume passing systems, run-based systems and balanced systems – it doesn’t reward or punish a QB based upon the system in which he plays. Second, as I continue to tell you, and you continue to ignore, passer rating correlates highly to team victory. Finally, for some of the reasons just mentioned, it is the statistic that the league itself uses to measure QBs, or at least uses to measure them as passers. As a result, it’s a comprehensive, relevant, reliable and officially-sanctioned statistic for measuring a QB’s worth. That’s pretty much the exact opposite of a “cherry-picked” stat. And of a “flawed” stat for that matter. That you defiantly “don’t care about it” says a lot about you and your understanding of football, none of it good.

go sit in your nerd circle and debate with other nerds. I am a football fan.

No one said you weren’t a football fan. I’m sure you are. Just don’t pretend like you are a knowledgeable one. The fact that you keep getting shown up in these arguments has nothing to do with me being a nerd (way to elevate the debate) and everything to do with your refusal to accept that your football prejudices aren’t based upon sound football judgment.

Bill Walsh was a football genius because he studied the game and came up with an offensive system that worked and won games. Jim Harbaugh also spends a lot of time researching and studying to develop, form and refine his system, and that system thus far is a proven winner. That both of them came up with systems that don’t emphasize your beloved down field passing game and instead feature shorter controlled passes and minimization of risk should tell you all you need to know about the style of football you prefer.

There’s nothing wrong with saying that you prefer a wide open, big yardage, down field passing attack. But just because you prefer that style of football doesn’t mean it’s the best way to win football games or that QBs and coaches who prefer a different style of offense are somehow lesser for it.

Given your preference for down field passing, tell me again how it is that you are a 49ers fan instead of a Raiders fan?

This has gotten old. No matter how much relevant supporting information and data I provide, you stubbornly refuse to even consider that you might be wrong. If the facts don’t agree with your predetermined opinion, then the facts must be wrong. It’s like trying to convince a flat earther that the Earth is round.

Moreover, your ego has made you look foolish and it has kept you from enjoying the 49ers’ success since Harbaugh arrived. I guess the good news is that you seem to be staying away after victories and appearing only after losses. Hopefully, that means we won’t have to put up with you very often this season.

That means little unless you look at field position. A 5 yard sack on the opponents 6 on 3rd down is not equal to a 5 yard sack on the opponents 38 or your 2 (resulting in a safety).

Also time left in the half matters a great deal and if you are winning/losing if the sack happens late 2nd/4th quarter.

      • Nick says:

        Well said MD

Here’s another way to put things in perspective.
What would Alex Smith have done if he were Seattle’s QB on the last play of last night’s game?

Let me frame this, just in case some of you didn’t watch the game. 4th down, 8 seconds left in the game, ball at the Packer 29. Seattle QB takes the snap, gets pressure from the left side, pivot rolls to the left to buy time, launches the ball into the endzone into quadruple coverage. Ref calls TD. Game over.

Alex Smith would have – most likely – rolled right, given that the pressure came from the left side. This would have limited his options as the deep routes were on the opposite side of the field. Check down, game over.

      • DS94everXev says:

Or AR steps right, takes a sack. Like he did 8 times last night.

Why do you insult the Niners QB?

      • claude balls says:

        @ Nick:

Given that the 49ers frequently gave up pressure from the left side during the Green Bay game, I would like to think that the 49ers wouldn’t call a Hail Mary to the left side of the end zone. I also would like to think that, unlike Russell Wilson Smith would have called the correct play in the huddle.

But at the end of the day, you’re right. When it comes to getting the referees to make a horrendously bad call on an end-of-the-game Hail Mary pass, Alex Smith has a terrible track record. In fact, he’s never done it. Not once has he ever gotten the officials to incorrectly rule an obvious interception a TD reception. Not once. Why anyone thinks he can play QB in the NFL is beyond me.

        Thanks for the perspective.

      • 49erGirl says:

Fair enough, Coach – you can’t argue with that!

      • ribico says:

        >>What would Alex Smith have done if he were Seattle’s QB on the last play of last night’s game?

        What if?

Before that play Seattle’s QB had passed for 100 yards. Even Alex’s measly output doubles that and we don’t have to settle for a Hail Mary prayer that depends on scab refs to make good.

What if? I mean we are talking hypotheticals, right?

      • 23jordan says:

        Nick,

The difference between Alex Smith and Russell Wilson is that Alex Smith is a game manager to the T! Going away from the plan is not in his DNA. His college coach told us all that. He can’t deviate from the script. He doesn’t like trying to MAKE a play. He wants the play drawn up for him do he can follow directions. He is a GAME MANAGER! Coach calls a play, Smith runs the play. He’s not a playmaker. Never will be one. You saw that bonehead sack he took the other day when he rolled right and was right next to the sideline and hot hammered!
This guy kills me. And people wonder why I don’t i’m preparing to go out of town next week so perhaps we can talk more or meet when I return.like his play! Because he can’t play. Everything has to be perfect. The play call has to be perfect, The blocking has to be perfect, the receiver had to be 5 yards away from the defender and must be wearing#85.
He can’t and won’t manufacture a play from a broken play. Sometimes you have to do that in the NFL. The Smithers are hypnotized by those baby blue eyes!!! Can’t wait until JH gets tired of babysitting the system misfit game manager.
Last year was last year. We get behind by 10. Warm Kap up. We’re not coming from behind on the arm of the check down king! Alex Smuth would’ve thrown that ball to Frank gore for 7 yards last night. Or he would’ve thrown it just far enough out of bounds so that it doesn’t get caught by our player or intercepted by the opposition. The truth hurts.

(of course it doesn’t help that the hospital in that situation is saying that the patient killing nurse is doing a good job)

I’ve always sided with the owners in negotiations, it’s their business they created it and they get to run it however they want to, no different then any other privately owned company. They had every right to lock out the officials if they didn’t want to meet their demands but the problem is they hoped that the alternative would be good enough to force the NFL refs back to the table and their strategy has backfired. Without any further cards to play and clearly not in a position of leverage at this point they simply must accept that they’re going to have to swallow their pride and do what it takes to get the NFL quality referees back in place.

Green Bay got robbed! With the game on the line, how could you not call the offensive pass interference which was so bluntly obvious, (Tate pushed the defender with two hands on the back!) How could you call the INT a touch down when one of your own referees that was closer to the event call the play a touchback!

    commenting on GB/Seattle’s last play…

not taking into consideration of the blatant push off by tate….

    simultaneous catch….

see one hand catches often called catches….so i don’t believe having both hands on the ball is an absolute requirement….

the ball was firmly in tate’s hand coming down to the ground ….the defender did not rip the ball away or out of the arms of the rcvr at any point while on the ground and in the end tate was laying on his back holding the ball all alone (albeit 40 seconds after the initial one-handed possession) and the defender gave up possession….

simultaneous possession in my estimation does not require 50-50 possesion…kind of like basketball on jump balls where the person on the ball has an iron grip on the ball while the other player is only required to have contact of the ball with two hands without fouling…

so i pretty much disagree with most everyone and have considered this a TD for seattle…

GB defender who ended up with the jumping height advantage ultimately left it up to the refs to make a call vs flipping the ball out of bounds… all for the sake of an individual stat vs the team advantage….

don’t care if the defender had the ball against his chest or not in the air….tate also had partial possession as the two came back to the ground and rolled around and to me this is simultaneously possession and it becomes the defender’s responsibility to make sure that the rcvr loses control of the ball on the ground as part of the continuation of the catch…he didn’t so it remains a catch in my estimation as well….
