Live blog: 49ers @ Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Here’s the live blog for the 49ers Week 4 game against the New York Jets. I’ll update this frequently with analysis from the press box.

8:34 The 49ers inactives are Scott Tolzien, A.J. Jenkins, Isaac Sopoaga, Brandon Jacobs, LaMichael James, Trenton Robinson and Joe Looney.

The 49ers do not have a single 2012 draft pick suited for this game. Darcel McBath seems to have passed rookie Trenton Robinson on the safety depth chart.

Sopoaga is not playing because he injured his knee and ankle last week, so Ricky Jean Francois will start at nose tackle. Ian Williams is suited up for a change, and he’ll back up Jean Francois.

Ted Ginn Jr. is active for the first time this season. I assume he’ll play and return kicks and punts.

Undrafted rookie Garrett Celek is suited up for the first time this season as well. Perhaps Greg Roman has some three-tight end sets in the game plan.

WR Stephen Hill and TE Dustin Keller are inactive for the Jets.

9:03 According to the NFL Network, this season the Jets defense has given up a 38.2 passer rating with Darrelle Revis in the lineup and a 107.4 passer rating without Revis.

9:49 A commentator on Jets radio just predicted the 49ers will win 23-22. In addition, he said it will be a close game in the fourth quarter, “but can the Jets pull it out?”

9:57 A Jets commentator just called the 49ers, “Arguably the class of the NFC.”

10:01 Already I’ve gotten a prediction wrong. The Niners won the toss and chose to receive the  ball. I expected them to defer.

10:03 Kyle Williams returns the opening kickoff to Niners 20. Maybe Ted Ginn won’t play today.

10:06 After a defensive pass interference penalty on the Jets, the Niners go three and out. On third and four, Anthony Davis gave up pressure, Alex Smith threw the ball to Crabtree who couldn’t hold on to the ball. Jets ball at their 25.

10:13 Mark Sanchez converts a third and 15 but cannot convert and third and 2 – Aldon Smith sacked him as Sanchez tried to step up in the pocket. The Jets punt and the Niners take over at their own 8.

10:21 The Niners’ drive ends when Alex Smith overthrows Mario Manningham down the left sideline on third and 7. Colin Kaepernick played 2 snaps on the drive. On his first play, he ran the option for an 18 yard gain. On his second play, he threw deep to Randy Moss in the end zone, but he was double covered and the pass was broken up. The Jets have absolutely no pass rush. They don’t tackle well, either.

10:25 The Jets go three and out. On third and four Mark Sanchez threw to Santonio Holmes’ outside shoulder, but he was open on the inside shoulder. Terrible throw.

10:27 The Niners start their third drive at their own 32 because Anthony Dixon was flagged for an illegal block in the back on Ted Ginn Jr.’s punt return.

10:32 The Niners’ running game is dominating their fourth drive. Mario Manningham just slipped three tackles on a 30-yard gain off of a reverse. Kendall Hunter followed that with an 11-yard gain. First and 10 and the Jets’ 11.

SECOND QUARTER

10:38 Colin Kaepernick takes a snap from the shotgun and runs 7 yards untouched around the left end for a touchdown. 7-0 Niners. They completed one pass for five yards on the drive. Greg Roman has managed to stick to the run without over-working Gore.

10:48 Shonn Greene converts the Jets’ first third and 1 on this drive. Tim Tebow is the quarterback on their second third and 1. He faked a handoff, then faked a run up the middle, then he threw to Dedrick Epps. Epps caught the ball, then took a huge hit from Dashon Goldson to the knee and fumbled. Niners ball at the Jets’ 47.

10:56 David Akers misses a 57-yard field goal wide right. Alex Smith took back-to-back sacks to push the 49ers way back. On the first sack, Smith chose not to throw to Garrett Celek who was wide open in the middle of the field.

11:02 The Jets go three and out when Mark Sanchez gets sacked by Ahmad Brooks on third and 1. The Jets look terrible.

11:08 Andy Lee boots a bad punt from his own end zone. The Jets get the ball at the Niners 47. On third and eight, Alex Smith overthrew Crabtree deep, and Anthony Davis was flagged for a personal foul. Bad play.

11:11 The 49ers force the Jets to go three and out, but Aldon Smith throws a player to the ground after the third down play and is flagged for a 15 yard penalty. First and 10 for the Jets at the Niners 28. The Niners are letting the Jets get back in the game with these dead-ball penalties.

11:16 On third and 7 Mark Sanchez shuffles frantically in the pocket and Justin Smith forces him to fumble. Sanchez is atrocious. Niners ball at their own 26.

11:22 Alex Smith leads the Niners 56 yards in a minute to set up a 36-yard David Akers field goal. 10-0 Niners. Smith was four-for-four on the drive. Three of the four passes resulted in first downs. The Jets defense was playing a soft prevent, receivers were wide open and Alex Smith hit them.

The Niners had the ball at the Jets’ 21 yard line with 30 seconds left. Harbaugh decided to let the clock run out and go for the field goal. Very conservative. He must not have much respect for the Jets’ offense or he doesn’t have faith in his own offense.

HALFTIME

The Niners attempted 17 runs and 16 passes in the first half, and they outgained the Jets 210 yards to 83.

THIRD QUARTER

11:40 Sanchez makes two nice first-down passes in a row, but then he gets a screen pass tipped by Ray McDonald and Patrick Willis picks it off at the SF 41. Sanchez bungles a simple play.

11:40 On third and three from the Jets’ 22, Alex Smith fires a 1-yard pass off Delanie Walker’s helmet. Incomplete. The Niners are 1-for-6 on third down.

11:44 David Akers misses a 40-yarder. That’s his second miss of the game. The Jets have been awful, but they’re still in the game.

11:47 Sanchez throws a pass right to Bowman but he drops it. Then he sails a pass over Holmes’ head on third and long. Jets’ fans boo Sanchez. He has to be the worst quarterback in the NFL. The Jets should bench him and bring in Tim Tebow.

11:54 Kendall Hunter easily gains 8 yards on third and 4. Three plays later – third and 13 – Alex Smith slightly overthrows Mario Manningham deep. Manningham was open and he only could get one hand on the pass. Andy Lee punts and pins the Jets at their 2 yard line.

11:58 The Jets go three-and-out again, and the fans boo Sanchez again. He’s 7-for-17 passing. It escapes me why he’s still in the game. The Jets punt a short one. Niners ball at the Jets’ 48.

12:05 The Niners drive it all the way down to the Jets 2 yard line. On third and goal, Gore is stuffed on a run up the middle. The offense goes for it on fourth down, Alex Boone pulls and clears a path from Gore to score. 17-0 Niners with 2:49 left in the third quarter. That was probably the knockout punch.

FOURTH QUARTER

12:16 On second and 12, Sanchez completes a pass to Holmes in the flat. He slips to the ground and laterals the ball to Carlos Rogers, who runs it all the way to the end zone for a 49ers touchdown. That was generous of Holmes. 24-0 Niners.

12:17 Holmes is carried off the field. He can’t put weight on his left leg. It appears he hurt his left knee. The Jets lost their best player – Darrelle Revis – last week, and they just lost their second best player. Now, the Jets may be the worst team in the NFL.

12:20 This has been a shameful performance by the Jets. Good grief.

12:24 The Jets go three-and-out again and punt.

12:32 The Niners just took a timeout. They’ve driven roughly 50 yards on seven run plays. Eight different Niners have attempted runs.

12:36 After the seven successful runs, Greg Roman calls back-to-back passes to Crabtree and Cromartie knocks both away. Akers kicks a field goal. 27-0 Niners.

12:41 The Jets offense reaches a new low. Another three-and-out. Three errant Sanchez passes.

12:42 Now the Jets’ special teams allows a blocked punt. Larry Grant blocked it. Niners ball at the Jets’ 4.

12:45 Hunter punches it in from a yard out. 34-0, and there are 6 minutes left.

12:46 It seems like only Niners fans remain. Lots of red jerseys, lots of let’s-go-Niners chants. The Jets fans are leaving.

12:51 This time the Jets go three-and-out against the Niners backup defenders.

12:53 Going down to the field. Back at you later.

Grant I’m in the end zone in a sea of Red watching our boys warm up.

  2. Razoreater says:

Grant, Mr. Celek is active. Is this an indication that VDs’ back might be bothering him more than anticipated?

You ‘da man’ Bay! Our boys are going to give you a lot to cheer about today.
I’ll be looking for you (#4) when we score on your endzone bud.

Has VD come out for warm-ups? How about TGJr?

Enjoy the game and keep it real Bay!

  7. Adam707 says:

No draft picks suited up. Come on now.

    • dannyshoe says:

Wait until later in the season when it really pays off, they’ll know the playbook better and be up to speed. We’re stacked we don’t need immediate impact, that’s the first time i’ve said that about our team in almost decade haha

  8. Band-Aid says:

Hoping the passing game can “Rev” up today. Be nice to see Moss and Manningham doing what they do best.

Having been a sideline photographer at 49ers games for more than 20 years (76-99) I am not in any way envious of those of you in the stands. I’m happy to have my arse on the couch, watching HDTV and having coffee, bacon and eggs for breakfast. YES, BACON!!!

  10. Hoferfan67 says:

What’s your road record? Will you bring good or bad luck today?? If the 9ers lose it’s on YOU!!! LOL

  15. Chris says:

I see a low scoring game and NY finding it’s pass rush. They (Jets) will bring pressure and lots of it. TE’s and Both RBs will be kept in to pass protect Smith meaning minimal gains in the passing game. I think the final score is 10-6 or 13-6. It’s 10-6 if SF wins. It’s 13-6 if NYJ wins.
I picked SF to win this week.

  16. Adam707 says:

Didn’t Harbaugh address the media and say AJ Jenkins was going to be “really good really soon” or somethin along those lines ? He’s yet to even suit up.

  17. Adam707 says:

Interesting stat I saw the other day. The panthers are 6-0 when Cam has 0 turnovers and 1-12 in games where he has at least one. Looks like turnovers are huge, maybe a 0 turnover game is more important than a 300 passing…..

Even though the niners offense haven’t scored- I LOVE the mix of the playcalling and them being aggressive.

Even with the first pass- Alex Smith probably overthrew it a bit but the team still got the pass interference call and it gave them a 15 yard game. The rules of modern day football rewards teams that throw down the field- even when well covered.

What did I tell you Smithers!!! WARM KAP UP!
I told you he was playing this week and the rest of the year!!!!!
    Smiths days are numbered!!

  96. Big Suede says:

I really hope they just continue the A. SMith/ Kaep thing through the season. Use both QBs throughout the game- that is going to be hell for teams to game plan against. And when we have a sizeable lead- Smith can bring it home.

    PERFECT!

  97. msclemons67 says:

Were there any passes on that drive? Looked like Harbaugh told Roman to stop being pass happy and pound the rock.

  98. steelematic says:

I wonder if Alex Smith just got jealous because he saw Harbaugh hug Kap…. Hmmm

  99. big niner says:

genuine happiness on JH’s face to CK7. The QB fraternity is great and that’s the difference in coach’s past.

  102. DS94everXev says:

Why are the Jets not guessing CK run with him in there? I thought Ryan was supposed to be a good defensive HC.

    • steelematic says:

My guess ds would be they practice with a 1 tier qb in tebow. Kaep can actually throw n play the game. u cant just guess that

      • DS94everXev says:

        steel

With CK in the game I’m thinking 2 things

        1 CK run/option

        2. Deep pass. That RM pass was not his best.

So, as a defender, I’m embarrassed by allowing him to do that.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

Is this bit of success with CK in there making you nervous?

    • BigP says:

They are guessing it, stopping it is another issue.

    • AES* says:

      DS,

How do you know that the Jets didn’t know CK7 was running?
Looks like they just couldn’t make a play.
Great blocking and excellent speed by CK makes the TD happen.

CK was just block from going for long a TD earlier as well.

DS, the verdict is in: Get used to seeing more of CK7 bud.

  103. msclemons67 says:

Goldson is now under arrest for attempted murder.

  104. ninermd says:

Wheeeew! Meet mr goldson. Drop another 7 here boys

  105. big niner says:

bang!!!! boooooooooooom!!! arghhhhhhhh!!! thats how I feel!!

  106. Big Suede says:

    Goldson is a beast

  112. Hoferfan67 says:

MM is playing like a #1.

  113. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Nice throw smith, Manningham is balling!

  114. ninermd says:

If I was a defense I’d see one glaring problem with smiths audibles. Switch up late because the time the 49ers take to snap the ball is way to long. Better Start practicing some hurry up.

  115. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Staley is garbage!!!

    • Band-Aid says:

Third bad game in a row for Staley. Gotta wonder if he’s hurt or just has diminishing skills…or pass rushers have just figured him out…or (and I think this likely), Alex is hanging onto the ball too damned long…AGAIN.

  116. fesnyc says:

tight end wide open over middle!

  117. ninermd says:

    Good coverage on that sack

  118. steelematic says:

  119. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

  152. mr rock says:

Alex is horrible. Literally painful to watch right now. And this is against a terrible team…

  153. Fourth & Alex says:

Jesus now I’ve seen some bad throws but that was just a horrible throw under no pressure. Completely missed Crabtree who had more than a step on his man and a huge gain if not TD.

  154. Stan says:

It looks like last year’s dead eye Smith..has regressed.

  155. pete4mtx says:

We must lead the league in 2-3yd completions…crabtree open n overthrown..either MC drops it or AS overthrows it…smh

  156. Stan says:

Pretty soon? a penalty for hitting like a meany..I’m tellin ya..

  157. Classic Niner says:

OMG!! Alex AND THOSE DEEP BALL ISSUES!!

  158. fesnyc says:

tons of mistakes, tons of penalties. luckily, we’re playing the Jets. against anyone good, our goose would be cooked

  159. oneniner says:

    F. the replacement refs were better than this….

  160. tkamB says:

Personal Foul on Aldon Smith for shaking a guy off after a play.

  161. big niner says:

    BUll shhhhhh penalty!!!

    • Chris says:

When you throw a guy over your back after the whistle, you are going to get called every time. If that wasn’t enough, he ran into the guys face to make sure the ref saw it. Just stupid.

  162. pete4mtx says:

    BS call on 99

  163. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

So we dominate the half and we are up 7-0. Bad play from Smith and too many penalties.

  164. Chris says:

Aldon Smith is sure looking like Suh these last two weeks. He doesn’t have the mental fortitude to be starting. He thinks he’s bigger than the team.

  165. ninermd says:

Where is the coaching this year. Bonehead play after bonehead play. Way to go Aldon. These are NOT the same 49ers as last season. Starting to worry a little

  166. Stan says:

As usual-even under Sing- the 49er defense holding down the fort. But Smith is looking pretty bad. Anybody notice?

  167. big niner says:

bad officiating, his arm was grabbed from behind. he didn’t swing it at anyone!!

  168. Fourth & Alex says:

Where are the Alexcuses this time? That was a low difficulty NFL throw. Zero pressure, he just pulled back and threw it several yards beyond the receiver who is running wide open. Wasn’t even close. At some point you have to question whether this guy belongs in this league consistently making throws like this.

  169. 49er42 says:

    Self destructing with stupid mistakes.

  170. Adam707 says:

Really hope smith turns it around in the 2ND half. He is playing horribly. Deep throw inaccuracy is evident today

  171. msclemons67 says:

    There we go!!!

  172. pete4mtx says:

    We got it

  173. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Defense!!!!!!!

  174. Fourth & Alex says:

    #99 makes amends

  175. BigP says:

Aldon Smith beasting out and making up for the earlier penalty.

  176. cUSwin! says:

Need to score right now, put them away!

  177. oneniner says:

we got it back…cmon Alex – just 3 points will be good

  178. 49er42 says:

    Great play!
    Need a TD!

  179. Beat The Jets says:

    Put CK in please

  180. philly9er says:

Did they throw to VD yet in this game?

  181. Stan says:

    Yep..the D is alive.

  182. ninermd says:

Saw that strip coming. 7 we need 7!!!!!!

  183. Hoferfan67 says:

    11-85!

  184. ninermd says:

Can we put 85 on every jersey? I just don’t get it.

  185. hov says:

alex is bad sanchez is horrible

  186. pete4mtx says:

    Ck will score before half….

  187. msclemons67 says:

Harbaugh must have had a chat with Alex. He’s looking much more crisp on this drive.

  188. ninermd says:

Smith is picking this prevent apart. Gonna get stiffer now. C’mon smith. I smell a RM td coming soon

  189. cUSwin! says:

Good pass! But it’s not consistent, along with our Oline. In fact I think Alex and the Oline mirror eachother.

  190. big niner says:

plus 3 in turnovers and only up 7? AS is bad today….

  191. fesnyc says:

the team doesnt seem to have faith in allowing Alex to take a shot when we have good field position. this is quite telling

  192. msclemons67 says:

So instead of taking a shot the 49ers settle for a FG? Even for Harbaugh that’s weak.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Not really.

    • Band-Aid says:

He wanted to shelter the Precious.

      • Adam says:

You need to change your name to Kool-Aid.

      • DS94everXev says:

I don’t know why some here keep using the term “precious” as some sort of implied insult.

The OL are paid for doing exactly that. Protecting the QB. Or “precious”. You guys do know that, right?

      • Neal says:

Is this the same BS, that says AS would of won multiple Super Bowls if he had the same teams that Joe Montana had. Let me tell you something AS could not make that team.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Neal

Please refrain from being yourself. You ruin the blog for everybody else.

        Thanks.

      • Adam says:

“I don’t know why some here keep using the term “precious””

Because they’re followers. No original commentary or analysis so they pick up what they think is popular.

        Makes no difference.

Wasn’t a great day by Smith (even though he was still 20 points above average on the coveted ESPN ranking) but fortunately we won and now the team can go back and see what’s what. We need to get back to the magic of the first two games on offense. The play selection on these last two games has been… odd.

At least Manningham is now a go-to guy so we don’t have to rely solely on Davis.

      • Neal says:

Is this the same BS also known as Precious who says Fouts and Marino afre not elite QB’s and continues to compare AS with the great Joe Montana.

      • DS94everXev says:

Wasn’t a great game really by any Niner offensive player. There were a lot of players who had good/average games. And we are good enough to beat just about anybody if our D/ST play like that. AS I think could have looked great in the 4th as the Jets were just winded and beaten by that point. But we did the smart thing and hardly threw the ball the whole 4th quarter so AS didn’t get to beat up on the Jets. KH and FG did.

MC didn’t have the best road trip. Neither did RM. MM though I think you may be onto something there Adam. But this offense can really get clicking if it can get MM and MC going (I don’t know about RM.) Because we know that we can run against anybody if they only have 7 in the box.

We don’t need to throw the ball deep like many want or think. Mood found a good article about deep passing, and Tom Brady last year was 1/15 on throws that were in the air for 40+ yards. Didn’t seem to hurt him at all. We just have to keep hitting the short/intermediate routes, run the ball well, not turn the ball over and we’ll win any game as long as our D does its job.

  193. philly9er says:

To conservitive no shots into the end zone with plenty of time.

  194. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Looked a little different with Smith running that play. Hahaha!

  195. ninermd says:

How do you get tackled by a guy on the damn ground? Now I agree with whoever said smith couldn’t do what ck did earlier. Wow and they let the time run out? Come back home 9ers. You left your thinking caps here. 10-0 ill take it, but it should and could be a blowout already.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

You could have walked in on the CK run there was nobody there. Call it straight!

      • Band-Aid says:

Oh, those excuses. CK would have stepped out of that weak tackle attempt. Alex went down like he’d been shot.

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
You have a problem with CK, you always have. You always look for the negative in his play. He does what he is asked to do. If the play was so easy to pull off, why did Harbaugh put CK in? It was a good play and he deserves credit.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, they basically put CK in the game because the run game is stagnant. He isn’t passing except the one to RM in a crowd of 3 defenders. I don’t like to be an image of a losing team – the jets – alternating two QB’s has really worked for them. If CK is ready start him.

      • 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

        Hofer,

President of the Alex Smith protection unit. Can’t you see him
Being phased out of this offense. Slowly but surely. I told you Kap would play this week.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Possibly, we’ll see.

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
It seems like Harbaugh really does want to develop Kaepernick. He is inserting him into the game during certain situations and building his confidence. He has scored the only TD today, right? Nothing negative about that!

  196. 49er42 says:

Can the coaches get any more conservative?
    Unbelievable

    • Adam says:

You really have to love the run game, I think, to appreciate this offense. It is a bit dull but a W is a W.

  197. DS94everXev says:

Don’t like that 2nd down play. Throw it in the endzone. Chances of scoring a TD run there running was minimal.

But a fine drive after that fumble. A swing of 6 points more than likely.

    • Chris says:

I believe the play was suppose to end with Smith running out of bounds to stop the clock. Then they could take a shot at the endzone. However, Smith self destructed again.

      • DS94everXev says:

Why not take the pass shot there? You can still throw it again if Inc. Some self-destruct driving the team down. Please try again.

  198. Fourth & Alex says:

The Jets are hanging their heads with their all-pro corner out. They’re laying an egg out there on defense but our QB is not taking advantage when given the big play opportunities.

  199. DS94everXev says:

Don’t like that 2nd down play. Throw it in the endzone. Chances of scoring a TD via run there running was minimal.

But a fine drive after that fumble. A swing of 6 points more than likely.

  200. mr rock says:

I’d like to see ck get a chance on an entire possession. He’s earned it

    • Fourth & Alex says:

I’m not sure we’re there just yet but I agree with mixing him in more and more to see if he can eventually take over and provide us big play capability from the position.

    • pete4mtx says:

Agree 100%…give him a quarter see what he does…we know what we got in AS…HARBAUGH doesn’t want to hurt AS so he’s our QB till he gets hurt…SMH

    • jsand3030 says:

Its not like he cant just hand the ball off like theyre having Smith do

  201. Neal says:

They should of had CK go for that run, AS needed to get out of bounds

  202. msclemons67 says:

San Diego is killing the Chiefs. Did Norv get fired when I wasn’t looking?

  203. Chris says:

I like my score prediction of 10-6. I have zero Faith in Alex Smith on an empty field let alone a field that has a defender on it. He can’t even run the ball.
This should be a fun week of excuses by DS and Adam and Prime.

  204. DClark says:

Man alive! the negativity in here is astounding! anyone would think we are losing! talk about arrogance.

Going on the remarks i’m reading I would say that for most of you guys anything less than 45-0 is basically failure.

  205. BennyBlanco says:

Good game so far… who know’s what is coming up 2nd half

  206. tkamB says:

Lol Rams ran the same fake field goal play we ran against them for a touchdown.

  207. cUSwin! says:

If the niners don’t score on their first possession the jets will respond, and punch us in the mouth.

  208. SourdoughSam says:

Tbow and the jets just got tbaggd by the 49ers

  209. Band-Aid says:

49ers 0-6 on third down this game.

  210. Adam707 says:

The fact the Niners didnt take a shot at the endzone at end of half shows Harbaugh/Roman dont believe in Alex cashing in a TD. I’ll take the 3 i guess.

    • angusinCanada says:

Pretty sure they just wanted to make sure they went up by 2 scores. That’s all. Greater chance of a sack/fumble or pick (with any qb) than a td in that scenario.

  211. Houston 9er says:

Very creative offense. Using Kaep and attacking all levels of the field. This will definitely cause opponents to have to game plan for every contingency. Not great results but better than last week.

Not sure if anyone noticed but that play that the Jets blew a timeout in the 2nd quarter was due to CK being lined up out wide completely uncovered. CK ran a play and then when Alex came in for the next play CK acted like he was running off and then lined up on the sidelines. It was a 2nd & 11 and the 9ers ran a tight lineup with the exception of CK who was all alone. Great try by the 9ers and great catch by the Jets coaching staff to call that timeout.

  212. ninermd says:

3rd downs still an issue, and the jets are the worst 3 rd down defense.

  213. 9er1 says:

Harbaugh not enough confidence to even take a shot at the endzone there. Terrible.

Hey, if Alex wasn’t such a great QB, we wouldn’t be up by so many points. (LOL).

  214. Fourth & Alex says:

Sanchez missed a wide open receiver downfield there.

  215. SourdoughSam says:

Adam its about points dude take a rip and relax the niners are winning winning

  216. msclemons67 says:

    Hahahaha! Sanchez to the rescue.

  217. tkamB says:

    Patrick Willis!

  218. ninermd says:

There you go defense. Good to know you’re back.

  219. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Defense!!!

  220. Nick says:

Now its up to the O to do something good

  221. msclemons67 says:

Hunter is looking better this week – a lot better

  222. adam says:

    Whew… Sanchez’s game: terrible.

  223. big niner says:

    Monster D!!!

  224. Nick says:

    Play action Here

  225. msclemons67 says:

Ok, in the red zone. Get Kaep back in there.

  226. Nick says:

Damn, 2 and 6 was a perfect down to take a shot

  227. ninermd says:

Those Vikings are reminding me of a certain team from last season.

  228. cUSwin! says:

Vikings look like us from last year.

  229. msclemons67 says:

    3rd & 2, 1 yard pass.

    $%#!@@^&#!

  230. Hoferfan67 says:

That was a terrible formation for that down and yardage.

  231. tkamB says:

    Delanie Walker drops everything.

  232. philly9er says:

Love seeing the Loins losing hope they keep it up.

  233. Nick says:

    D. Walker is not that good catching the ball

    • Chris says:

It was thrown at his helmet behind him and harder than it needed to be. Let’s keep the blame where it should be.

      • Adam says:

        The helmet?

      • DS94everXev says:

The blame is on the WR if the ball hits him in the hands/helmet. Had DW had his hands up ready for the quick pass, it wouldn’t have hit his helmet. A type of catch MC is good at making. Maybe DW should take some pointers from him.

  234. ninermd says:

    Wtf Akers.

  235. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

I told you guys its time for smith to go. Helmet high and behind to walker!! Bad pass.

  236. Hoferfan67 says:

    Akers is not on today.

    • DS94everXev says:

And we still dominated the Jets. Guess that theory that if Akers has a bad day, we lose the game deal lost a lot of momentum after this game.

  237. Houston 9er says:

Man, Akers is just off today. I guess even great players are allowed to have one bad game. Just wish it would have come last week for Akers and not this week.

  238. Nick says:

That drive was on Roman. Terrible play calling.

  239. Band-Aid says:

Conservative play callibg, typical Alex play and Akers having and off day = letting the Jets hang around. If the 49ers were playing a better offense than the Jets, they’d be getting killed.

    Bring in CK7!!!!!

  240. Adam707 says:

Anyone else tired of this 3rd down Bull? CONVERT something please. Just pathetic, all around. Walker has been awful this whole season. Weird considering hes in a contract year.

  241. Band-Aid says:

Conservative play calling, typical Alex play and Akers having and off day = letting the Jets hang around. If the 49ers were playing a better offense than the Jets, they’d be getting killed.

    Bring in CK7!!!!!

  242. Me says:

We need a real place kicker!!!

(since everyone here is into overreaction)

  243. Chris says:

    Preserving my 10-6 prediction.

  244. 49er42 says:

    Oh oh.
Nothing but the defends is working.
The Offense will have to get more aggressive or we are going to be in trouble.

  245. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Why run a play to Walker?? The man has dropped everything near him this year!

  246. pete4mtx says:

Horrible…offense w/o CK is looking pathetic

  247. 9er1 says:

Bring Nedney out of retirement. Christ, Akers is doing his best Philly/Green Bay immitation where he missed 3 field goals and won the game for the Packers. TERRIBLE.

  248. Adam707 says:

3 points off 3 turnovers. 2 of which gave us the ball on the +50, COME ON

  249. adam says:

I would think Sanchez is on a short leash.

  250. ninermd says:

Oh s*** gonna start hearing tebow chants

  251. tkamB says:

Did I accidentally click on an Eagles blog today? This is crazy haha.

  252. Neal says:

We should be up by 16 points if not 20, Akers has lost that loving feeling, it is gone today

  253. Houston 9er says:

Wow. Sanchez looks alot like Alex Smith. 10 yards over the head of an open receiver. That was ugly.

  254. msclemons67 says:

On the bright side, Sanchez is even worse than Smith.

  255. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Give CK7 this entire series. Lets out this game away.

  256. Fourth & Alex says:

Thank God we don’t have Sanchez at QB. I guess it could be much worse as a 49ers fan. How many years do the Jets have invested in Sanchez again?

  257. big niner says:

I want to see real drive. running, passing not trick plays, followed by a TD

  258. Stan says:

It really is a debate-who’s worse Alex or Mark?

    • Band-Aid says:

Jesus, that’s like a choice between drinking water in Big Spring, TX or New Delhi, India. One kills you with sulfur, the other with e coli. Either way, you’re dead.

      Same With Smith and Sanchez.

  259. ninermd says:

Td is coming faithful. Soon to be 17-0.

  260. Hannah says:

Tired of this conservative offense. This screams playing to lose, then playing to win. Either they trust Smith or they don’t. Can’t let the Jets hang around.

  261. Fourth & Alex says:

What is this, the Delanie Walker hour?

  262. 9er1 says:

Watching Sanchez is certainly making me feel better about Alex Smith.

  263. msclemons67 says:

Alex needs to stop audibling out of runs. Just hand it off Alex.

  264. Hoferfan67 says:

    Finally a good run.

  265. ninermd says:

    Good audible smith

  266. Hoferfan67 says:

    2nd and 12!! a RUN?

  267. Chris says:

Sanchez’s receivers are getting open. Sanchez is just missing them. If SF doesn’t score another TD, I expect to see them lose.

  268. ninermd says:

Wtf? A handoff on 2nd and 12????? Raye is that you?

  269. Fourth & Alex says:

A jumbo package run on 2nd and 12 isn’t going to fool anyone.

  270. Big Suede says:

3rd and 13 is Kaep territory

  271. Fourth & Alex says:

That time I think Manningham should have caught it.

  272. big niner says:

    wow

  273. Nick says:

Nice throw, catch that ball MM

    • Hoferfan67 says:

it’s like he slowed down. Use two hands!

      • Nick says:

Not sure. MM should have caught that. Lack of effort there

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

It was ball that a top flight WR makes. Who was the WR in the Atalanta game who caught that 60 yarder. Nice throw, but the WR made sure it was worth while.

Other than that one play though, Manningham looks a lot better now than he did in week 1. He and AS look to be building something.

Not the best week of AS to MC. They just looked out of sync the whole game.

  274. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Good pass, Manningham dropped that one.

  275. Adam707 says:

Thats on Manningham, Two hands!!! That is a catchable ball. Make the Effing play

  276. Houston 9er says:

Smith should have thrown that sideline pass to Walker much higher and further out front so Walker could have used his speed to beat that d lineman. As it was thr0wn, it made it impossible for Walker to make that catch in bounds.

    • DS94everXev says:

Walker ain’t that much taller than the defender. If the ball is thrown any higher, nobody catches it. The defender was right with him with no real separation.

  277. mr rock says:

Wow smith blows another long ball and another 3rd down conversion.

  278. tkamB says:

Eh I think Kyle Wilson tied him up a little on that one. Shouldve been illegal contact imo.

  279. big niner says:

where Jerry? how I miss thee

  280. ninermd says:

Wow. Lee! No more predictions for me. My boys aren’t helping me. That was a td for sure. It’s there they just aren’t taking it

  281. 9er1 says:

I wonder when the next time is we will ever complete a downfield pass of more than 15 yards. We are going to keep jagging around with this team until the Jets turn it into a close game. Unbelievable.

  282. msclemons67 says:

It’s looking like Andy Lee will be the Offensive MVP again this year.

  283. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Good thing Bay has that Andy Lee # 4 jersey on. He’ll be a hero at the Sportsbar later tonight in New York! Lol.

  284. Hoferfan67 says:

MM was too worried about getting the flag. Focus on the ball.

  285. Fourth & Alex says:

If we don’t hit on a play at some point the Jets are going to wake up, gain some confidence and all hell may break loose.

  286. cUSwin! says:

If its not one thing its another. Week to week they have no continuity, and everyone is making mistakes. Coaching on down. The chemistry of te team is off. These niners need to ring the alarm and make some serious changes before its too late.

  287. ninermd says:

    Tebow tebow tebow. Lol

  288. cUSwin! says:

    Bad offense all around!

  289. Hannah says:

Sanchez looking so terrible takes away from the Niner’s offensive ineptitude today.

  290. Hoferfan67 says:

TG gets caught by a LB? Takes him a while to wind up to get in top gear..

  291. ninermd says:

Ok. We will NOT score on this next drive. ;-/

  292. Fourth & Alex says:

Okay time to hit on a big play to VD here and put the Jets to bed.

  293. msclemons67 says:

The Rams are ahead of the Seattle Midgets so far

  294. 9er1 says:

Mark Sanchez ASPIRES to be alex Smith. Which is scary! YOUCH!

  295. ninermd says:

    I can’t stand siragousa

  296. tkamB says:

    Delanie Walker caught one!

  297. Hannah says:

    Finally Walker catches something!

  298. msclemons67 says:

Red Zone – bring in the Kaepper

  299. ninermd says:

How you like walker now??? I think he’s getting warmed up. Wheeew

  300. Hoferfan67 says:

    RZ and two runs AGAIN!

  301. Hannah says:

Please play for the TD here and not another FG!!!!

  302. Nick says:

    Jumbo is not working

  303. Hoferfan67 says:

That’s on GR – ridiculous. FG isn’t running well today anyway!

  304. big niner says:

    where’s boobie?

  305. msclemons67 says:

    Frank the Tank!

  306. ninermd says:

Told you we wouldn’t score . Lol

  307. big niner says:

    TD!!!!!!

  308. Hannah says:

Finally, Harbaugh takes a risk…it was a run, but at least he went for it on 4th down.

  309. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    GORE!!

  310. Adam707 says:

There we go, Alex 2-2 that drive, good play call. Thank you harbaugh for going for it on 4th.

  311. Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers winning ugly…jets are just uglier!

    • AES* says:

Right Hofe. But nothing looks better then a big W (lol).
Run blocking is punking the Jets at the moment.
      Love me some ‘ugly ball!’

    • Adam says:

The run game was pretty solid looking. Manningham I think will be the real deal going down the stretch. He’s a better option than Crabs, in my opinion. Gets better separation before and after the catch.

Defense looks like they bounced back nicely.

Offensive play calling was a bit suspect. Sometimes I just wonder if Roman tosses a coin. This thing, if the guys in the box were right, was Roman’s idea of playing the Jets with the Jets’ playbook, option tosses, CK playing Tebow, etc. Kind of a weird game.

Hard to tell whether we made any real progress though, the Jets look awful.

  312. ninermd says:

C’mon I need the 21 sf. And a shut out would be great too. Gotta feeling I’m gonna be bitter at Akers for awhile.

  313. fesnyc says:

we’re going to have to step it up if we’re going to make my prediction of 49-10.

without Revis, the Jets totally suck.

  314. cUSwin! says:

Looks like Rex is gonna be filing for unemployment at the end of the season.

  315. Stan says:

I KNEW if I walked away to tie my shoes..they would score. Superstitious? Who?

  316. Becky aka LadyNiner says:

Lovin’ me some Mr. Gore!!! Feeling bad for Jets fans….seriously…why is Tebow not in? At least give them hope. I want to be in the reel room as they watch this weeks game and review……JH, you’re the man…..

  317. cUSwin! says:

    Yes!!!!!

  318. Stan says:

    NICE PLAY!

  319. tkamB says:

    Great play by Goldson.

  320. Nick says:

    Buffalo beat New England

  321. BigP says:

Hell of a play by Goldson!

  322. Chris says:

I’ve been hard on Goldson, but that was one of the best pass defenses I’ve ever seen.

  323. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Pay Goldson!

  324. adam says:

    Goldson!

  325. ninermd says:

Wheeew. The red and gold jet. DEE Nied!!!

  326. Alexsmith4mvp says:

I know FG scored the second attempt but I would like to see ADixon run the heavy package. He seems to have improved his game in the offseason but hasn’t had a carry this season. I think as the bigger back he would be better suited for the fourth and inches carries if he wasn’t fooling us in tge preseason?

    • big niner says:

I agree, but it looks like he’s in the dog house.

      • alexsmith4mvp says:

well i understand this game after the penalty on the kickoff, but its something i have been wondering everytime i see the heavy package not work. Do you think he has been in the dog house all season or were you just saying that for this particular time?

  327. Houston 9er says:

Through 3 games and nearly 3 quarters the 9ers offense has 1 TD to a WR. Let’s break that stat wide open in the 4th quarter against the Jets. Let’s get Crabs, Manningham, and Moss into the endzone. Let’s go 9ers.

  328. Stan says:

    Bad call..invisible.

  329. ninermd says:

Lol out tebow is better than yours. Ha ha haaaa

  330. big niner says:

    rusty refs!!

  331. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Nice Aldon!!!

  332. Fourth & Alex says:

Does that count as a sack, essentially? I mean the scorer shouldn’t have to determine if the intention was a run or pass, right?

  333. adam says:

    Tebow, meet Aldon Smith.

  334. Hannah says:

    YEAH!!! Rodgers!!!

  335. mr rock says:

    Holy shiz!

  336. ninermd says:

Unfortunate. But I’ll take it. Hope he recovers quickly because he’s done for the year. Rex take your fata$$ back to the sidelines

  337. BigP says:

Turnover, TD for the 49ers and Holmes is down. Pretty brutal for the Jets.

  338. Nick says:

    Wow, what a play

  339. mr rock says:

OK safe to give ck some PT now!

  340. Chris says:

Now are they going to rule that an attempted forward pass at the end of the run instead of a fumble?

  341. fesnyc says:

    Priority One: stay healthy.

this game is over. lets wrap it up with some power football and go home in one piece

  342. cUSwin! says:

    Our d holding the fort!

  343. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

They may bring that back because Holmes wasn’t trying to advance the ball. He gave up.

  344. big niner says:

    Ninermd !!! how about that!!

  345. cUSwin! says:

We look like the Dilferr lead ravens.

  346. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Nope, TD!!!

  347. cUSwin! says:

    Do feel bad Holmes.

  348. Chris says:

I am on the bandwagon for sitting Smith and letting Kaepernick finish the game.

  349. Hannah says:

Offense will be going in protect-the-lead mode now….heavy doses of runs coming up.

  350. big niner says:

there goes Holmes!!! and my fanatasy player…but well worth it for my Niners!!

  351. adam says:

This one is over, put in the reserves.

  352. pete4mtx says:

24 point lead in the 4th…CK should play

  353. msclemons67 says:

    Sanchez just out-Alex’d Alex. 3rd & 2, -2 yard pass.

  354. ninermd says:

Mojo is back for our defense.

  355. Fourth & Alex says:

Maybe bring in Kap rest of the game?

  356. tkamB says:

    The defense is baaaaack.

  357. fesnyc says:

    have to pull Gore.

without Gore, our offense would go nowhere

  358. msclemons67 says:

And now Gore will finish what the defense started.

  359. mr rock says:

Yes get gore out of the friggin game good grief

  360. msclemons67 says:

Wow – Jets know the run is coming and they can’t stop it.

  361. tkamB says:

Kendall Hunter is really good. I think he should get 7-10 carries a game always.

  362. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Delaney does a hell of a job blocking though!

  363. 49er42 says:

Time to rest Gore ; J. Smith and P. Willis.

  364. msclemons67 says:

Why did they have Alex throw another incompletion at this point in the game?

  365. cUSwin! says:

Feels great to get the W. love these niners, but we have more work to do.

  366. mr rock says:

Raiders broncos, saints packers should be a great day on the couch!

  367. mr rock says:

    Ck ck ck ck ck

  368. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

That was pass interference. Why the hell are we throwing it anyway?? Run the damn ball.

  369. 49er42 says:

Crabtree you have to catch that ball!

  370. Stan says:

    Nice game managing.

  371. Coffee's for closers says:

Glad to have been 100% wrong about the game, very glad.

  372. philly9er says:

Damn Fox switched games on me

  373. tkamB says:

Lol Bowman, Sanchez basically threw you the ball and instead you go for the hit.

  374. msclemons67 says:

My goodness… Sanchez looks like Smith in the “We Want Carr” game.

  375. big niner says:

he almost got knocked the f out!!

  376. BigP says:

Lol, the Jets are having a horrible day. Blocked punt, ouch!

  377. Stan says:

Ahh,the pretty Jets cheerleaders are unhappy. I hate that…

  378. tkamB says:

    This got ugggggly.

  379. mr rock says:

    Block!!

  380. BigP says:

“Let’s go Niners!” You can hear the cheers!!! Lmao.

  381. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Dominant!!!

  382. Stan says:

Score a td..do not settle for a FG.

  383. mr rock says:

I’m a broken record I know but ck needs to be in here

  384. msclemons67 says:

Get CK7 out there for some practice.

  385. tkamB says:

    Lol Will Tukuafu.

  386. Stan says:

No,one of the cheerleaders is laughing….

  387. big niner says:

tukafu was happy for a second…

  388. mr rock says:

Lmao at Goodwin spiking the ball for hunter

  389. Stan says:

    Go for 2!

  390. adam says:

    Ok, go for two. :p

  391. ninermd says:

Time to sit the starters. Got my 34 points and my 21 point blowout. Overestimated smith and the passing game and underestimated our defenses but ill take it! Wheeew. The sleeping Giant is awake again.

  392. msclemons67 says:

37 rushes, 22 passes today. Back to real Harbaugh football.

  393. MontanaMan16 says:

OK, time to warm up Kaepernick! lol

  394. Nick says:

    The defense won this game.

    • Nick says:

Offense needs to step up rest of the season. I think Roman should be on the hot seat. Dude needs to elevate his game planning.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

He does well on some series and then he flops with 2 straight runs after a big turnover. His plays are there but the timing is suspect. But hey, it could be RR’s team !! LOL

      • MontanaMan16 says:

I cant argue with that! I dumbfounded most of the time with the play calling!

  395. Brotha Tuna says:

    Hey BAY, hey RIBICO
    You guys partying?

  396. Nick says:

    It’s NFL Redzone time

  397. Nick says:

Rams just sealed the win with an INT

  398. Nick says:

Detroit driving with less than a minute left down 7

  399. fesnyc says:

now there’s a headsup player. good move by Kaep

  400. msclemons67 says:

Wow – great move by CK7.

  401. Hoferfan67 says:

To play that poorly and win with a blowout is incredulous. Wow CK running again – he’s pretty leggy!

  402. big niner says:

    CK with the mercy slide

  403. BigP says:

He wasn’t touched before he hit the endzone, was he?

  404. 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

    Kap!!!!!!! Kap!!!!!!!!! Kap!!!!!!!

    See ya later Smith!!

  405. Nick says:

Minnesota may be for real and are 0:25 away from a win

  406. tkamB says:

Shouldve scored. Would rather rub it in the face of the Jets and the new york media.

  407. mr rock says:

    Classy kappy

  408. big niner says:

    class!!!!

  409. Nick says:

    Wow, panthers beating Atlanta 28-27

  410. ninermd says:

Left 47 points out there today. Wow. To say that is miraculous. With a 34 point win.

    • Band-Aid says:

They needed to score at least 15 of those for this to be considered an encouraging win.

Not enough passing game. The defense and ST saved the offense. Again. CK looking better and better, AS, eh, more of the same, a bust from the get go. Still a bust.

  411. Hoferfan67 says:

Maybe the 9ers should change CK to the Jets. They need some runners! jk lol

  412. ninermd says:

    Look at the rams. Wheew

  413. Adam707 says:

Not much to complain about after that 2nd half. Who needs to pass when you run game gets 250+. Jeez

    • Hoferfan67 says:

They weren’t running well in the 1st 3 qtrs. They got most of the running yds in the 4th qtr trying to burn the clock. The play calling was again suspect. MC needs to catch the first slant and AS needs to hit on those two open passes to MM. They need the pass offense to step up.

      • Adam707 says:

Also missed MC on a huge gain/possible TD. Would like to see Alex make a big play once in awhile.

      • 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

Your boy Alex is done Hofer. He will continue to overthrow guys until his arse is benched. Keep CK warmed up!!! Lol

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Perhaps Jordo. FG may need to worry about leggy coming in to replace him in the RZ. It seems the other athletic running QB lost again today. Hmm. Maybe they’re a fad.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Adam707

Had it been caught, scored a TD, the penalty on Anthony Davis would have hurt me a lot more. The only real miss deep AS had I think was the one where MM only got 1 hand on it. And I think MM knows he can do better than that.

  414. Neal says:

    Love CK game and class.

  415. ninermd says:

Whining packer fans with “worst call ever shirts” IMO the don Beebe call was the worst ever. They deserve every bad call they get. Lol

  416. ninermd says:

Newton blew the game with that fumble. Atl will get that fg. Seen this scene way to many times. Freaky fumble

  417. NolanSuit says:

Alex’s two shots to Manningham should’ve been caught. The throw to Crabtree was off. AS was meh, needs to play better. Not terrible, but he is better than this.

    • Band-Aid says:

      No, actually, he is not.

      • NolanSuit says:

He’s already shown you to be wrong. But being wrong on this blog doesn’t mean much, as so many of you are wrong so often…..with no repercussions.

    • 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

      Not really, he is not.

    • angusinCanada says:

      Don’t waste your time Nolan,
There’s no talking sense in the face of “no, the sky is not blue” crowd. They ignore Smith’s games, and obsess over his missed plays. Too bad, cuz they’re missing a great team!

  418. Nick says:

    Hofer,
Did you see the 60 yard bomb from Matt Ryan?

  419. msclemons67 says:

Matt Ryan – jeez. Just not fair.

  420. Band-Aid says:

What kills me is after eight seasons, he’s still the same Alex. This was the year he was supposed to step up, be the guy on whom you could load the team on his shoulders and carry the team.

That did not work out in Minnesota, against a very average defense.

At this point, either he can really play or he can’t. Yes, they won the game, but Alex actually had very little to do with that, the running game, the defense and the special teams did that. The one game where they really needed Alex to stand and deliver, he failed. Miserably.

I know, you Smithers will defend the Precious against any and all criticism, but until he can make ALL the throws, accurately, he is a bust. I don’t care what any pros say, they will say anything to keep some sort of gravy train/good PR going. Rice said it best. Take off the diapers. As I see it, he’s still wearing pull-ups.

    • NolanSuit says:

First off, Minn is proving to actually be a solid team, so you are wrong there. Their average D just held Detroit to 13 pts….IN DETROIT (don’t be so ignorant next time, do some research). Secondly, the two passes to MM should’ve been caught, they were very accurate passes. The only huge misfire was the one to Crabtree, that was a huge gaff. If you are going to criticize him, criticize him for taking sacks that killed drives.

When you can’t even execute a basic, accurate criticism without sounding like an amateur, no one is going to take what you say seriously…it’s just a waste of text.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

We don’t know that CK can make all of the throws. We haven’t seen him enough. If he can, then start rotating him in. All we know now is that he is leggy and can run. As far as we know, he is a refined less known TTebow. Let’s see if he can pass then start rotating him in to take over in 2013. If it’s not GR then the pass attack needs play makers.

      • I.P. Daily says:

He’s nothing like Tebow. No comparison on any level…

      • Prime Time says:

Hof the playcalling at the end of the 1st half and really the entire game shows that the 49er formula is what they game plan for and will not deviate from it.
Harbaugh is a coach that will stick to that formula because it gets results. It’s not glamorous, it’s almost too methodical, but it works.
CK will bring some great value back in a trade. He needs to go to a team with a more open passing attack. Thats not happening in SF. They officially are a run the ball, win the turnover battle, field position, defensive orientataed team.
People will say its Smith, well the last drive of the first half says its the coaches. If they didn’t trust Smith there, they could have brought in CK and opened it up and tried to score. They didnt and they didn’t want to take any chances. That’s the 49er way under JH. Love it or hate it, it got us a win.

      • AES* says:

        Agreed Hofe.
Nice runs by CK today but in no way is he ready to become a starter over AS.

CK is becoming what I thought he would become; a change of pace player who can be an X factor against certain defenses.

Remember that CK was only one block from popping a long run (perhaps TD) before the TD run. Harbaugh will use CK’ strength’ as a runner throughout the season, which will give us another weapon.

AS is not in any danger of losing his starting job. But I can’t see the Org trading CK (Prime mentioned it) because we don’t know at the moment if he can develop as a passer. If CK7 can learn to throw with accuracy and consistency then we may have some controversy at QB.

But AS is safe until that (if it ever) happens.

      • 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

I’d like to see Smith make some throws as well Hofer. Alex’s days are numbered. Which team are you rooting for next year when smith is gone?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, the only team that uses alternating QB’s is the Jets. We see how well that works! They need to make the plays in the RZ work. I continue to see runs on 1st and 2nd down. The offense is frustrating – both the play calling and the misses by AS and MC.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Watching the game today I saw some good, some average, some bad and some awful.
The aweful is reserved for the Jets QB’s. our Smith is not aweful, he’s just average. Speaking of average, so was the playcalling.
Settling for a field goal in the redzone with 23 seconds left was a slap in the face to Smith.
Putting CK in should also be letting Smith know that the offense is not getting it done. Notice served.
Andy Lee is out if this world.
Jets fans made several positive comments about our defense.
Also Sanches got booed pretty badly today.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Prime

It wasn’t a good playcall at all. Unless Smith has the blocking for a TD run, it does nothing at all that a pass would not have done. Had AS been tackled further down-field in bounds, I don’t know if we can get a snap off before time runs out.

Throw the ball into the endzone, or a quick out. Then look to throw it into the endzone on the next play. Running with AS on that didn’t give our players the best chance to succeed, and that is what a coaches play call is judged by.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

I don’t think you needed to be in East Rutherford to come up with that summary Bay. If AS misses on open plays they need to change things up. He worries too much about the INT. The problem is, this isn’t a 6-10 DeBerg team. They were in the playoffs last year and if they make the change and fail, they are really toasted! It’s a fine line.

      • Prime Time says:

23 welcher/Bay, just one question? Is it Smith or the playcalling and before you answer, think about that last drive before the 1st half? If Smith isn’t the guy to throw it downfield or if they don’t have any trust, why not put Kap in on that last drive and try and score?
Insted they were content to run it out or kick the FG?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Prime, the problem with pulling AS out down in the RZ, the team will start to question the play calling and their role. What other good teams that are playoff bound do this? They have to try their base RZ plays to MM, MC, RM, etc, etc, to see when they work and when they don’t.

      • Prime Time says:

Hof the coaches are baffled of what to do next in the RZ, nothing has worked. Bringing in Kap shows they are trying to do anything which I like.
No one is questioning the coaches and their decisions, it’s way too early for that and considering who they had before, they will do anything JH says, at least until they start losing. Players care about winning under JH, not personal stats.

      • DS94everXev says:

If teams are too stupid to figure out that CK is going to run it every time he is near the endzone, then we should continue doing it.

I as a fan, knew what was going to happen. That is pathetic that the Jets players/coaches didn’t. I see CK in there, I load the box in the redzone and challenge him to audible out of a likely run play into a pass play and take my chances 1 on 1 outside. Until CK shows he can beat me by reading defenses and throwing it into close quarters, I play it like a run.

  421. blazer says:

Seesh…the Jets are bad, why is Rex Ryan always bragging about his team, and they suck. Sanchez was made to look inept today by the 9ers D, Ryan should have switch out his qb, cuz Sanchez looked plain old bad.

    • ninermd says:

Our defense helped out a lot. Imagine if Smith played against this defense. NO QB looks great against our defense.

      • AES says:

I hear ya MD. But Ponder didn’t look all that bad (lol). But I think the entire team thought they could get a win against the Vikes by simply walking into the stadium.
Good wake-up call for us. And it showed today.

    • msclemons67 says:

Now now, Sanchez is playing behind a bad O-Line and has bad receivers and a new offensive coordinator. Gotta give Mark another 3 years of excuses before you judge him.

  422. ninermd says:

Told you. The nfl is like a train wreck being watched over and over on some days.

  423. Jack Hammer says:

Good to get the W on the road. New York is BAD! Sanchez makes Smith look like an All Pro, and Sparano looks as if he is grasping at straws. No wonder the Dolphins were so terrible the last few years.

    • Neal says:

Jack Are you telling me that Smith is not All Pro? . lol AS can tease us and be a top 5 QB, played brilliant in first two games, last week it was a disaster and this week he was pretty good, although his accuracy seems to be a problem on short passes. I am not going to jump on the band wagon anymore, he is not as bad as I thought and not as good as I thought. I am glad CK is playing more too much game to be sitting on the bench.

  424. I.P. Daily says:

    Steve DeBerg/Joe redux…

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Not really. Joe came in to throw. CK was just taking the place of the inadequate RB play in the 1st half. When he starts throwing 3-5 times a game, then we’ll know. Either way, GR needs to call better plays especially on 1st and 2nd down.

      • Houston 9er says:

They brought in the backup QB and your reasoning is that they were unhappy with the run game? That’s really astounding. IMHO CK was brought in due to his unique talent that absolutely nothing to do with the run game. The run game is the strength of this offense. The 9ers had 143 passing yards in this game. Brining in the backup QB had nothing to do with the run game.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Houston, he didn’t throw it down in the RZ. He passed once which was a poor decision with a crowd of 3 around RM. Do you even know what the half time stats were for the running game? FG was 21 carries for 62 yds (3.0 per carry) for the day! Like I said, most running yds in 4th qtr after game was out of reach. Do you watch the game?

        T

      • Houston 9er says:

Hof I can’t help ya brother. If the 9ers were unhappy with Gore then Hunter plays more. They didn’t bring in the backup QB because they were unhappy with the run game. That logic is rather absurd. I am certain the coaching staff determined CK was coming into this game to run a specific set of plays prior to the game even starting. Gore could have had 240 rushing yards in the first quarter and CK was still going to play in this game.

Bills are not a gimme. We need to put the hurt on them early and take away their run game.

    • msclemons67 says:

I don’t think CK7 is anywhere close to Joe but Harbaugh is definitely following the Walsh model for bringing up the replacement QB.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

It seems that way but I’d like to see some passes. We know he can run. CN lost again today. Maybe a fad? Maybe we see ST to throw and CK to run? Three QB rotation. Hmm.

      • Jack Hammer says:

When Harbaugh finally makes the change at QB, people will forget all about Newton when they see what CK can do.

The future is bright, but for now I am going to enjoy the ride. Good to be back at 3-1 for the second year in a row.

      • angusinCanada says:

It’s not rocket science guys, they brought him (Kaep) in to run the read option, which is simply just another aspect of our running game. They didn’t bring him in to throw into triple coverage. That was a very poor decision, and the only way he ever throws the ball this year as a real qb is if Smith gets hurt.

  425. dannyshoe says:

I want to see A.S. and C.K. on the field at the same time time in a shotgun formation, the Defense will never know who they are hiking it to. It could be something game changing if these coaches got the idea and ran with it.

Yup AES, was there. Still recovering. :) Sorry, just impressions, not analysis – I’ll let others do the insipid handwringing that should never accompany 34-0 shut/blowouts.

We had fun booing Sanchez and calling for Tebow along with the rest of the crowd ;) Like I said in another posting, also had fun explaining to Jets fans about who Kaepernick is after he showed up Tebow for the imposter he is, and the Jets coaching staff for being clueless in how to utilize a talent like that.

My section – 108 – was right over the away team’s tunnel. As the Niners came off the field at the end of the game Dixon lept into the sea of red jerseys gathered around there. Awesome! I think every Niner fan in the tri-state area must have been there – even before the end of the game when Jets fans had exodus-ed out, a lot of sections, especially upper deck, were predominately red. I’ve been to nearly every 49ers game played at the Meadowlands the last 25 years, I’ve never seen that kind of attendance. It’s gotta make the team feel good to see that level of support on the road.

  428. Houston 9er says:

49ers had 379 net offensive yards. 245 net rush yards and 134 net pass yards. That’s some old school football right there. When you score 37 points with 134 net pass yards you know you have a great running attack and a great defense.

Alex is part of the problem but isn’t all the problem. At times the line does not give him time. At times the receivers can’t get open and get pushed off their routes. The YAC is very low. MM seems to be the only one getting much YAC of the wide outs. The play calling is also a problem at times. The whole approach at times appears to be to avoid mistakes instead of to score points. This needs to change if we want to get to the Super Bowl.
I think theentire offense needs some work not just Alex.

  431. I.P. Daily says:

I’ll stand by my Steve DeBerg comment. Steve was just good enough to get your hopes up and then break it with a pick. They brought Joe in gradually. Now it’s the same with Colin. I don’t worry about him throwing. He threw into that crowd because that was the play. Randy had a good shot at it but couldn’t come up with the ball. It was no where near a defender. Some of you guys need to look with your eyes and think like the coaches as best you can; game looks way more interesting that way…

    • DS94everXev says:

      IP

I don’t buy the “that was the play” deal. It is the job of the QB to protect the football and not cause turnovers as best he can. Throwing it into 3 coverage without looking any place else because the call was to RM isn’t a good decision. Most of the job of a QB is to make good decisions.

That ball should have been picked off. CK not showing he has the patience necessary to adapt. Anybody thinking he is like Joe was in 1980 is seriously mistaken. CK didn’t throw any but that one pass. That should have been intercepted.

      • Band-Aid says:

It is the job of the QB to protect the football and not cause turnovers as best he can.

Nonsense. It is the job of the quarterback to run the offense, make plays and help score touchdowns.

If you protect the ball and lose, you still lose.

When the 49ers needed Alex to step up, against Minnehaha, he failed. What is your excuse for THAT?

      • NolanSuit says:

Minnesota is a good team. Our entire team got outplayed. Stop showing so much ignorance when it comes to football, just do some research.

      • DS94everXev says:

Did you listen to the announcers at all? They said that the best way to win a game in the NFL is not turn the ball over.

We didn’t. The Jets did. We won.
Last week, we did turn the ball over a lot, and guess what? We lost. And the last turnover was Staley not protecting AS’s backside which was hit just as he was about to pass. The most dangerous time to give up a hit on a QB.

Kinda obvious to me. Perhaps you need a new bandage. The one you have is soiling your brain if you can’t figure that one out.

      • Prime Time says:

DS for once I understand where the haters are comin from. Most of us became Niner fans because of the offensive stars and the exciting passing attack.
Now under this regime, we have an entire new philosophy, new way to win games and its hard to accept that change because lets be honest, today’s game was painful to watch but this is who the 49ers are under JH/Baalke.

The approach to winning remains the same, run the ball, play good defense, don’t turn it over, win the field position battle.
Some don’t like the approach cause it’s a 180 from Walsh but to me, as long as it keeps producing wins, I’m good.

        BS,
Denegrating CK won’t make Smith look any better. Everybody knows your agenda, and it’s tired. CK came in and threw a bomb (Can Smith throw that far?) because that was what he was asked to do. He also scored a TD, something that our starting QB is asked to do but couldn’t. That doesn’t mean he is a starting caliber QB, but it does show that the Niners are commited to developing him and getting him some playing time. You should be happy about that, but I’m not surprised, it’s all about Alex with you. You find more positives in his turnovers then you do in CK’s score.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

DS, today AS left a couple of TDs on the field. I’m getting tired of him saying in the presser he missed some opportunities. He needs to make those plays. GR doesn’t always put him in the best position, but he’s got to step up when the plays are there. No excuses. Play better.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        “Can Smith throw that far?”

Actually he can. He said during the preseason he can throw 65 yds in the air and he did in one game last year.

      • Neal says:

BS, when AS moves on to another team, will you finally leave this blog and root for AS new team? As we all know here you are a AS fan first and a Niner fan second. Now that is a FACT precious.

AS missed 1. The others would have been called back due to penalties. One of them, MM was held and it wasn’t called. And the problem with AS deep passes haven’t been his arm strength at all. I think all his deep misses have been overthrows.

      • DS94everXev says:

Add neal. Teleconferencing is a great way for you all to go.

        So he is inaccurate?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

They have been overthrows. He does have the arm strength but he’s more concerned about the INT. He needs to make the pass when they are there.

      • BigP says:

        He hasn’t though.

Gimme a break. If Smith threw into triple coverage, the reactionaries on here would be screaming bloody murder.

  432. Grant Cohn says:

Doing my grades, I have a question for you guys. Did Donte Whitner come close to picking off Sanchez early in this game? I remember him diving for a tipped pass.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Grant

It was a great dive. DW had his hands on the ball just as it hit the ground. Had it been in the air just a bit longer, he would have made a spectacular catch.

Regardless, he played AWESOME Grant! He also showed some class on that fumble return TD. He knelt by Santonio Holmes that whole time. Most of the time, defenders will run together after a TD. But he seemed might concerned for Holmes on that play.

    • Houston 9er says:

He had his hands on it but it would have been an amazing effort if he actually caught it. You couldn’t have expected any player to make that play.

    • ninermd says:

It was close but it was trapped. Very close though.

    • Neal says:

      I would give AS a C-plus.

  433. Bayareafanatic says:

Why do you guys think they brought in CK just to take a shot downfield to Randy? It wasn’t a run or a red zone play which Hofer suggests is the only reason to bring in CK.
It told me that either Alex couldn’t make the throw, or Alex doesn’t make the throw. If it was the latter, then maybe JH was letting AS know that if you don’t make the through I have someone on the bench who will.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Maybe Grant should ask that tough question. Or maybe he did – he was at the game today.

    • Prime Time says:

Bay why not bring KaP in at the end of the 1st half then?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Because he saw it once and saw that it was a poor decision and almost a pick. JH is all about the turnover – don’t make them or you don’t play period.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Prime

Exactly. With time running out, I’d put in the guy with the best chance to run it in from the QB position. The Jets didn’t do anything against it all day anyway. Why not do it again?

    • BigP says:

I don’t think Smith can get the ball down the field like that, it seemed very deliberate. In the bigger picture, Harbaugh seems committed to developing CK regardless of Smith’s play. Whether Smith is the long term answer or not, I still want all of our QB’s to develop because it is best for the team.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, I question if it’s good for a playoff team. It hasn’t been done before. But we’ll see how it plays out.

      • Neal says:

CK gives us another dimension, glad Harbaugh is using him more often to develop.

      • ninermd says:

I hate saying this, but I’m starting to think you’re right. At least consistently. The second MM should have been caught IMO. Other than that every deep pass he threw was horrible. Maybe this is why he never goes deep, and maybe Harbaugh knows this also. I sure as hell hope not.

      • Neal says:

        @Hof,

Would love to see Kaep playing in the Red zone, what a dynmaic situation that would be , he can throw it or pass, defense will have problems.

    • angusinCanada says:

Nobody should have made that throw. He was triple covered.

      • msclemons67 says:

Agreed. CK7 decided his target before the ball was snapped and stuck with it regardless of what the defense showed him. Not a good decision.

On the plus side though – that was a beautiful throw.

      • 23jordan/ WARM UP KAEPERNICK says:

That may be true but someone has to give Moss a chance to make a play? Alex Smith sure is not doing it. Moss had a chance. That’s all the receivers have been asking smith to do. Throw it up and give them a chance to catch it, that’s what wide receivers get paid to do.

In a previous post I said run or deep pass. Just didn’t state it here.

CK in the redzone, I’m thinking run 100%. On that pass, I’m thinking deep pass if I’m in the secondary and run if I’m a DL/LB while not losing containment. I’m not concerned with him going thru his reads until he proves he can.

Run/deep pass seems like an easy scheme to defend.

  438. Hannah says:

Very happy about the win after last week’s disappointment. My concern is still the offense and overly conservative playcalling. Alex is still having troubles throwing to his WRs and it’s hard to pinpoint whether it’s him or the playcalling. The gameplan was fine today as the rushing game was dominant and there was no big reason to deviate from that. But as we saw last week, anyone who can shut down our run we will struggle with because the passing game is still not up to par. I know that Harbaugh/Roman are conservative by nature, but I also sense they still don’t trust Alex. One of the biggest plays in the game was Kaep’s run and because of that success, we will probably see more of that the rest of the season. That right there indicates it is only a matter of time before Kaep takes over.

    • ninermd says:

I think today showed that they don’t trust smith with the deep routes and for good reason. They have to stick to the ball control type of offense with #11. Sorry bud, can’t make it more clear then saying that AS is our starter.
Your problem is that you over react to anything that has even the slightest reference to AS.

Decipher what you want from my comment DS.
CK should be viewed as another weapon just like RM, MM, MC, VD, FG, KH, D.Akers and yes, even AS.
Why do you have an issue with that?
What is it about Harbaugh inserting CK7 into the line-up that you find disturbing?

    @Hofe
Perhaps Hofe. But Sanchez is not playing anywhere close to AS’ level of late. And our offensive line is much better then anything the Jets can roll out on the field. CK seems faster than Tebow. And may actually be more accurate than Tebow given the time to play more.

I’m not a huge fan of the gimmicky plays. But when you have a weapon like CK on your team why not utilize him?
You may be right in saying that this type of play does not always win games. But I’m enjoying this one. And I’m looking forward to more plays from CK in the future.

What does not win plays is inconsistency from your QB. You want Smith to be the guy but I keep telling you that he does not have al, the tools to put it on the field consistently.
Stop being in denial. Alex smith can’t be counted on. He can’t e en relax in the pocket. He sees pressure when there is none. JJ got cut in the preseason for overthrowing open receivers. Grant mentioned that Harbaugh hates that. I do too.
Keep begging Alex to be what you want him to be. You’re gonna continue to be let down. He contributed a little to today’s win, very little. We could have easily won this game without him. He is a
      Liability.
On the other hand, give Kap his props. He produced results! The kid is 3 times as fast as Smith with a cannon. Bye Alex Smith.

Meanwhile, the guy none of the Smithers wanted just went 30/38 for 338 yards and 3 TDs in a 37-6 victory.

Yeah but he has to wear an orange uni…

Victory against who? Oh thats right a team that sucks. What happened when Peyton actually played against a respectable D coordinator? He got picked 3 times.

Go play fantasy football if you care more about yards and stats than points.

So by that logic if the 49ers play a horrible defense shouldn’t AS be putting up similar numbers?

    Hofe,

For all the weapons we have, there really has not been an immediate and decisive change on the offense thus far.

I say thus far, not as an indictment against AS, but rather as the fact that it’s still early in the season and chemistry with many of our new weapons has yet to develop.

Today was the first time MM jelled with AS and that bodes well for the future. Once RM get’s going and we can add BJac when he’s ready we could be that much more dynamic.

The offense came out somewhat sluggish today for whatever reason. Our defense played up to it’s norm, which put us in good field position. But a sluggish offense will not work against the C-hawks and some of the other top defenses we will face this year.

Harbaugh and Greg Roman will need to find a way to jump start and build some chemistry on offense. But that’s what makes football so intriguing. They may do something completely different on offense next week.
