Live blog: 49ers @ Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Welcome to the live blog for the 49ers’ 2012 season opener against the Green Bay Packers. I’ll be updating this frequently with analysis and impressions.

My dad and I entered the breakfast area of our hotel in Appleton. Wisc. a little after 10:15 a.m., Central Time. The place was packed with out-of-towners wearing full Packers get-ups, one man sporting a yellow and green wig as he ate his muffin.

At 11:00 a.m. my dad fired up our rental car, a Chrysler 300 – the White Shark – and we hopped on 41-North to Green Bay, a 30-mile drive.

It almost felt like we were driving in a different world. The landscape was green, flat and covered with silos. Are there silos in California? Every quarter mile we passed something that looked like a giant golf ball on a giant tee. I have no clue what those are.

We got off the freeway in Green Bay and we were in the middle of Small Town America. The houses reminded me of my Nonni’s old house – small and cute.

It was 64 degrees with a breeze and you could feel the fall in the air. I’ve never felt fall.

All of a sudden we saw Lambeau Field emerge – a sublime, enormous structure with red brick and green trim. It reminded me of AT&T Park if AT&T were in the middle of San Leandro or San Lorenzo.

Inside Lambeau, the seats – actually benches – are green and yellow like a college stadium. Above them is a horse shoe of new luxury boxes, and over the south end zone about 5,000 new seats are being built around the Jumbo Tron.

The fans haven’t been admitted inside yet. I feel like I’m sitting in an American monument – our version of the Roman Coliseum.

2:12 (Central time): The following 49ers are inactive: Brandon Jacobs, Ted Ginn Jr., Scott Tolzien, LaMichael James, Garrett Celek, Ian Williams and Joe Looney.

That mean A.J. Jenkins is active, which doesn’t surprise me. James being inactive doesn’t surprise me, either. Any time the 49ers could put him in the game, they’d be better served putting in Kendall Hunter.

The following Pakcers are inactive: Jarrett Boykin, Sean Richardson, Davon House, Brandian Ross, James Starks, Jamari Lattimore and Mike Daniels.

2:15 The Packers list Jarrett Bush, not Sam Shields, as the starting right cornerback.

3:00 The Niners have completed their warmups and they’re back in the locker room. The Packers are still on the field running plays with 35 minutes to go until kickoff.

3:24 The Niners won the toss and elected to receive. That’s a first in the Harbaugh Era, I believe. They always defer.

3:28 The Niners ran on first and second down, and on third and 1, Clay Matthews tossed Joe Staley to the ground and sacked Alex Smith. Staley has to do better than that.

3:36 Aldon Smith sacked Aaron Rodgers and then immediately popped his own helmet off, earning a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first-down for the Packers. Not smart.

Jim Harbaugh is on the field after almost every play, badgering the refs. He’s yelling and stomping his foot.

3:41 The Niners end the Packers first drive with a big blitz, and Carlos Rogers sacks Aaron Rodgers. The Niners seem confident calling blitzes so far.

3:48 The Niners first drive ends when Alex Smith throws high to Delanie Walker on third and 4. Michael Crabtree was covered one-on-one by Nick Perry in the slot on the other side of the field, but Smith never looked that way. David Akers makes a field goal: 3-0 Niners.

1:58 Suprise: The Packers chose to punt on fourth and three from the Niners’ 45. Niners ball at their 8.

Tarell Brown had a monster series, breaking up a deep pass and making the tackle on third and long.

4:02 It’s the end of the first quarter and the Niners face third and three from their own 15 yard line. They’re 0-2 on third down so far.

4:11 Alex Smith threw a 14-yard TD pass to a wide open Randy Moss in the end zone. 10-0 Niners. The Packers forgot to cover him. The Niners drove 92 yards easily.  Smith got in a rhythm on first down in the Packers territory. The Packers are having a really tough time stopping the run.

4:29 Aaron Rodgers just threw a 1-yard TD to Jermichael Finley (10-7 Niners) after a Dashon Goldson pass interference penalty away from the play in the end zone. Rodgers completed four passes to Randall Cobb, who is dominating Perrish Cox so far. Rodgers also converted a third-and-12.

4:34 The Packers have Nick Perry covering the slot receiver and Alex Smith is starting to take advantage – 11 yard completion to Manningham on first down.

4:45 Smith is 10-10 throwing to wide receivers. The Niners face third and one at the Packers’ 25 with 1:05 left in the first half.

4:47 Greg Roman calls a Frank Gore run up the middle and he gets nowhere. Bad, obvious, conservative play call. No wide receivers were on the field.

4:49 43-yarder, Akers. 13-7 Niners. 0:55 seconds left. Packers have 2 timeouts.

4:56 The Packers go 3-and-out, punt, and Kaepernick’s in with 18 second left.

4:56 He runs a draw and gains 17 yards. Great play call. Roman is a good first-down play caller. 11 seconds left, ball at the Green Bay 45, and Alex Smith is back in the game.

5:00 David Akers just made a 63-yard field goal, tying the record for longest field goal ever. 16-7 Niners at halftime.

5:17 The Packers face third and one from their own 30 and Aaron Rodgers calls timeout. That’s going to hurt them later in the game.

5:20 Aaron Rodgers fakes a handoff and throws deep to Jordy Nelson, but overthrows him. That was the worst play call of the game. Packers punt. Niners ball at their 16.

5:27 Now Alex Smith has to burn a timeout on first and goal at the nine. The Niners are making the Packer’s defense look pathetic. It seems like every receiver is wide open. Alex Smith isn’t missing them. In fact, he’s playing one of the best games of his life, averaging 9.3 yards per attempt.

5:30 Kendall Hunter appeared to step out at the 2 on first down.

5:36 Alex Smith missed Crabtree wide open in the back of the end zone on second and goal,  but Smith hit Vernon Davis in the front of the end zone on third and goal. 23-7 Niners with 8:16 left in the third quarter.

5:44 Jermichael Finley dropped a third-down pass on third and 2, and the Packers punt. Out of bounds at the Niners 4 yard line. Bad call by the Pack. They should have gone for it on fourth down at midfield.

5:51 The Packers absolutely cannot stop the run, but Roman calls two straight passes and the drive stalls, Andy Lee punts and the Packers take over at their 19.

6:00 The Packers are punting at midfield again. Unbelievable.

6:05 The Niners go three-and-out for the first time all game with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter. A holding penalty on Joe Staley killed that series.

6:06 Cobb returns a punt for a touchdown but he appeared to benefit from an illegal block in the back. The refs throw the flag but pick it up. Wow, what? 23-13 Niners, and the Packers are going for 2.

6:12 Aaron Rodgers completes a short pass to Jordy Nelson for the 2-point conversion. 23-15 Niners with 11:16 left. The Niners should be able to run for the win.

6:15 Alex Smith swings a pass to Gore in the flat on third and 2 and the refs spot the ball a yard shy of the marker. It looked like Gore’s knee was down. Harbaugh’s challenging the spot.

6:19 The refs confirm their ruling. No more challenges for Harbaugh, and just one more timeout. Andy Lee is on the field to punt. Cobb makes the fair catch at the Green Bay 25 with 8:59 left.

6:21 Aaron Rodgers throws a pick right to NaVorro Bowman. Niners ball at the Green Bay 23. Not a good game for Aaron Rodgers. Alex Smith has outplayed him.

6:22 Next play, Gore runs for the touchdown. It looks like the Packers have folded. 30-15 Niners.

6:31 Bryan Bulaga gets called for a holding penalty that should have ended the drive, but Aaron Rodgers completes four huge passes in a row to drive the offense all the way down the field for a touchdown. He hit James Jones three times in a row, beating Tarell Brown all three times. 30-22 Niners with 6:05 left.

6:46 The Niners call their final timeout on second and 10 at their 46 yard line.

6:48 Clay Matthews beats Joe Staley for about the fourth time and sacks Alex Smith. Third and 17. Green Bay calls timeout.

6:40 Alex Smith scrambles for five yards and the Packers call their final timeout. Andy Lee time.

6:41 Aaron Rodgers gets the ball back with 3:37 left at his own 16.

6:42 Donte Whitner drops an interception on first down. He read the pass but just dropped it.

6:49 Chris Culliver knocks away Aaron Rodgers’ final prayer. The Niners will win. I’m happy to admit I had this game all wrong. The Niners were sharp and improved, and the Packers were not. I’m going down to the locker room. More to come later.

  1. Chris says:

Watching RG 3 yards behind his receiver, he sure is looking like a rookie against New Orleans. All Washington is running is different versions of the screen. RG3 definitely has been bailed out by some outstanding catches by his receivers.
Saints on the other the other hand look like they are picking up where they left off last season.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

He’s 7/7 with a 123 yards and a TD. That sure does look like a rookie.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

It’s early. The QB friendly offenses have sure helped the rookies the last few years.

      • Chris says:

maybe if you watched the game before you commented you would haven’t have sounded so out of line. He has completed 6 passes BEHIND the line of scrimmage. The TD pass was HIGH and his receivers have BAILED his poor accuracy out.
It is all YAC making him look good.

      • Jason says:

I agree with you Chris. His accuracy isn’t there today. Robinson made an amazing catch that was behind him. Take away the 88 yard td completion, he has 35 yards on 6 completions. They are all screen passes.
The Saints D looks suspect. Offense is hitting on all cylinders but Washington is doing what SF did to beat the saints. They are eating up clock running the balland completing the short passes to wear down the D line.
It’s a copy cat league so expect to see more teams beating the Saints this year.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Were they *checkdowns*?

      • Jason says:

Not from what I saw. It looked like the play calling has been screen left, screen right, screen right, screen left. Bring the D line up with screens and runs, then hit the quick post over the middle. They just scored a second TD doing just that.
Shanahan is definitely a great QB coach.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

10/11 155 yards and 2 TD. Still looking like a rookie?? Feel free to eat that crow however you prefer.

      • DS94everXev says:

        So…
The way to beat the Saints is to throw lots of checkdowns, have WR’s help the QB out with a few great catches, and keep on running.

And we have a QB who does that and we want to to replace him with a guy we hope takes more chances, throws deep and not run the ball with our RB’s as much because it “protects” our QB?

Sounds like some purposefully have a plan that will lose. Not win games.

      • Chris says:

Actually DS, like Washington is learning, you can’t keep up with high powered offenses that score in 12 seconds by running the ball, checking down, kicking field goals, and hoping you get receiver help.
NO has only been on the field 7 minutes and are only down 6 points. They really should be up 1 point, but a costly fumble through the back of the endzone (at the 1/2 yard line) is only putting off the inevitable.
A check down QB will not win a SB.
Now all that being said, I’ve never wanted Kaepernick to start over Smith. I think you have to play the hand your dealt to the best of your ability. We have Smith and he is our best option right now at QB. We’re going to have to bluff the heck out of the opponents to win against GB.

      • ribico says:

27-14 now. Saints better get going on that inevitability.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Chris

Now it is 30-17 Redskins. Start the 4th, 1st down at the 40.

And the 1 time RG3 tried to force it, it should have been Int. If this strategy fails, it hasn’t yet.

      • Chris says:

Ds I’d be glad to show you where this style fails. SF didn’t make it to a superbowl last year. This style failed. (It did win 13 games for SF, but it doesn’t win a championship)
NY didn’t play this style against NE. They attacked. They won a superbowl. This style failed.
In fact in the last 30 years, the only team to win a SB without an offensive juggernaut is Baltimore.
Washington won’t be in a superbowl in 2013, but I appreciate them beating a playoff team. Now I just need Detroit to beat STL and ARZ to beat SEA. that should help SF.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Chris

Ok. The styles of GB/NO didn’t get them as far as the Niners or Baltimore. And if not for a freaky TO for us, and a horrible call in the AFC title game (that was a TD!), both Baltimore and Niners make the Super Bowl. And the Pats returned the gift by playing no better than the Rams are today.

    • Chris says:

Commentators were just commenting on that. It has been run run screen screen run run run screen run run screen slant TD. Then run run run run on fourth. Run screen run, post TD.

    • 23jordan says:

      Chris, Hofer,

RGIII is balling. He has 2 touchdown passes and he’s outplaying Lyck against the blitz happy Saints. He’s standing in there and taking some shots. The TD to Garçon’ was pure and he’s not finished. That was the 1st half. No, the Saints aren’t the bears but the QB still has to execute the offense and make the plays. I wish we had a playmaker at QB. Oh yeah we do, Kap is the 2nd stringer though!

      • Chris says:

I hope he wins the game. I want SF to have the easiest road in the playoffs they can manage. Saints D looks like a JV team. Past interference in the endzone on 4th down on an underthrown ball is pitiful decision by NO defense.

      • 23jordan says:

        Chris,

The Saints are not the problem. They won’t win their division this year. Atlanta will. Saints are in turmoil. They will be lucky to make the playoffs. I say they don’t.

    • Adam707 says:

Still watching the game Chris? Yea time to stop talking. RG3 wise beyond his years.

      • Chris says:

Scroll up big guy. I think RG3 was coached great this game and NO played horrible. I think Shanahan copied what SF did to NO. I give ALL the credit here to SF. RG3 played an Alex Smith game but RG3 had receivers make amazing catch after amazing catch on the short game. I believe he had 1 pass that went in the air for more than 20 yards. The rest were in the 7 yard range that Alex catches so much flack for. The difference here, Washington receivers were actual weapons who broke tackles and made some amazing YAC plays.

      • Chris says:

And that 20+ yard in the air catch was 0 yac. It was a great show of RG3′s arm strength.

      • Adam707 says:

Coaching is what got him started, but he took control of the game, did you see the 80 yard TD? Threw a dime off his back foot while being hit. This guy will be special

      • Jason says:

I think it’s funny how you guys praise a rookie on another team in the NFC who is just 3/14 on 3rd down.
If Alex Smith had those numbers, there would be calls for Kaepernick to come in 300 times on this blog.

      • Chris says:

I’m not taking anything away from RG3, but that 88 yard TD pass was a 7 yard completion with an 81 yard YAC.

  2. Hoferfan67 says:

Add MVick to the list of QBs that have thrown an early pick.

  3. Hoferfan67 says:

“I feel like I’m sitting in an American monument – our version of the Roman Coliseum.”

I thought that was Candlestick! lol

  4. Coffee's for closers says:

The golf balls on tee’s are water towers.

  5. Hoferfan67 says:

GC, you can’t really get the ambiance of Lambeau if it’s not wind chill -20 below zero. lol

  6. msclemons67 says:

The Circus in New Jersey (Jets) is actually looking decent. Sanchez did that thing where the QB actually throws it to a receiver – has he done that before?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

TTebow has added very little the few times he’s alternated at QB. They should just stick with MSanchez. It’s working.

      • msclemons67 says:

I think Tebow is there to remind Sanchez to work hard. Like most USC QBs Sanchez seems to enjoy partying more than film study.

      • ribico says:

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the Tebow substitutions. All it does is interrupt the offensive flow and momentum.

    • ribico says:

2 Fitz INTs and a punt return are gift wraps for the Jets. Fitzpatrick looks terrible, telegraphing his late delivery.

  7. msclemons67 says:

Luck just found out NFL cornerbacks are a wee bit faster than PAC-12 cornerbacks. Floated the ball a bit and got picked.

    • big niner says:

I think he took a chance, that Ogele what ever d lineman was offsides. I hope we don’t get jobbed by the replacement refs.

  8. Chris says:

Replacement refs too mistakes right there back to back plays. First was Chicago was offsides on the INT and then marshall not down when he throws the ball up in the air.

  9. ribico says:

Grant, you may need a new live blog thread for *our* game closer to gametime ;)

  10. Chris says:

Redskins up 20 to 7 against Saints. Boy this game looks like the SF game. Griffin looks very Smith-esk. Short passes, running, eating clock. Bree’s can’t get a rhythm going.

  11. Chris says:

It looks like the NFL is full throttle offense this year. 5 of the 9 games have one of the two teams over 17 points in the first half. This isn’t a good sign for SF whose offense can’t put up those numbers by last year’s marks.

    • Chris says:

Texans just scored again, make that 6 of the 9 teams.

      • ribico says:

Miami also turned the ball over 3 times in the first half. It’s not just offenses running wild out there, there’s a lot of sloppiness on the other side of the ball.

    • ribico says:

Jets were helped along with 3 first half Bills turnovers. Sounds like a way the 9ers can also win games. Oh, it was a way we won games.

      • msclemons67 says:

Fitzpatrick looks horrible today. Absolutely horrible.

      • MidWestNiner says:

        Ryan Fitzpatrick= Derek Anderson 2.0

      • msclemons67 says:

Damn MWN – I think you nailed it.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Shocked?

Fitzpatrick has been horrible the second after he signed his contract extension mid-season last year.

The Bills suck. Fitzpatrick sucks. He’s just a lot smarter than the Bills organization and the experts who thought he was any good.

      • Chris says:

I’m shocked the Bills look so bad. They spent a lot of money on their defense and on their pass rush. I agree with you that Fitzpatrick is horrible and always has been. I just thought their D would bail them out.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Chris

The Bills spent a TON of money for a guy who hasn’t played a lot the past 2 seasons due to injury.

Forget who it is. Would you think that to be a good decision? Give lots of money to a guy who is injured a lot the past 2 years?

That is why any stories that we were going to pay PM a ton to come here is wrong. As a business, you don’t do that. And generally businesses that make emotional choices will fail.

  12. MidWestNiner says:

hereI’m getting this out of the way now. If I recall, I made a bet with Jack and Razor both that Ginn wouldn’t be on the team roster come the game against the Packers. Well, obviously I lost, so I’m holding up my end of the bargain. Let me just prepare myself here. Ok, here I go.

    GREEN BAY PACKERS RULE!!!

Now excuse me while I cleanse myself like the last 40 seconds of this clip.

By the way Grant, this clip is just meant for humor. But if it violates the rules of this blog, then feel free to delete the video link.

  13. ribico says:

Oh look, Lions having a little trouble with the Rams. Maybe NFCW isn’t as terrible as the punditocracy lets on.

  14. Jack Hammer says:

Thank you for that very detailed description of Appleton and Green Bay. You are fortunate to have such an amazing job. Enjoy the game, and keep the updates coming.

  15. msclemons67 says:

Folks, I hate to shill for the NFL but go get NFL Redzone. It is football crack.

  16. Grant Cohn says:

What do you guys think of Stephen Hill now?

  17. mark says:

what kind of muffin did that packers fan have grant? banana nut…cheese?

  18. msclemons67 says:

    #NFLRT – @TimCowlishaw: RGIII – 2 TDs, 0 ints. Luck, Weeden, Tannehill – 0 TDs, 8 ints.

Weeden and Tannehill look horrible. Weeden just missed a wide open receiver in the end zone from the 8 yard line. Luck looks better but still rough.

  19. LSX says:

I predicted Matt Ryan would be a top 5 QB this year, and my friends laughed at me. He’s off to a great start. Although to be fair, I also thought Josh Freeman would be a top 10 QB last year

  20. Coffee's for closers says:

Gabbert is having a pretty good day.

  21. msclemons67 says:

Holy crap – Blaine Gabbert just executed a 2 minute drill for a TD.

Blaine Gabbert and Sanchez looking good. Did I wake up in a parallel universe today?

  22. Coffee's for closers says:

OY, vick is slaying my nfl.com FF team. Looking just like he used to in Atlanta.

    • big niner says:

I have both RGIII and cutler, Cutler is 20 points behind RGIII, go figure….I thought for sure he’d struggle on the road in NO for their season opener.

  23. RandR-Guy840 says:

    Definitely a cheese muffin…

  24. Razoreater says:

One thing that has not been discussed is the fact defense is usually farther along than the offense this early. That may work in our favor.

  25. Nick says:

Wow, there some big time surprises so far in week one:

    St Louis is looking tough

Cleveland is beating the Eagles – whom some had predicted to win the NFC East

    Washington beating the Saints

    Vikings are playing well

  26. Nick says:

    NFL Redzone rocks

  27. Woody says:

Question – why is everyone saying the Niners and Smith played better than their average, and so won’t play as well this year. And Aaron Rogers had his best year ever (even the best season of a QB ever), yet no one is saying they won’t be as good because Rogers won’t play as well. Seems like a double standard.

    • Nick says:

Good point. I think Rodgers will regress somewhat this year. That regression will start this afternoon.

    • Chris says:

I think Matt Flynn is why no one is saying that about Rodgers. The system produces those numbers. It was shown it really doens’t matter who is behind center, that system in GB will make a QB shine. That and Rodgers has been good for 5+ years.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        The system and the receivers.

      • ribico says:

You are saying that from one Flynn showing? A game that was treated basically as an exhibition? Thats a big reach, IMO.

      • Chris says:

Not that the game mattered that Flynn was in. Instead, that a no name can come in, even in an exhibition game setting, and put up those numbers says a lot for the system, not Flynn.

  28. MidWestNiner says:

I think the Saints are trying to best the Raiders on terms of being flagged the most during the season. They have a good jump on them anyways.

  29. MidWestNiner says:

Looks like the Lions are going to win. Dang it!

  30. big niner says:

Madieau williams just got burned big time!! glad he’s gone.

  31. Stan says:

Nope, we have Grant,A cool Winter, a long spring…then cool winter again. We don’t have 65f in Fall followed by a 32F night..or colder. No maple Syrup here.
Why I never gamble and know Adam Meyers is a liar-Wash33,NO 17.

SO Grant, You still pick the PACK?…I watched Braveheart again. Good thing some fans here cant go medieval on yar…or me!
Disemboweling is over doing it I think.

  32. MidWestNiner says:

The Redskins-Saints game has tightened up. It’s not over yet.

  33. msclemons67 says:

Harrison Smith just made a great play. Was it Hofer or Jack who was high on Harrison at draft time?

  34. Willie niner says:

Does anybody knows what is going on?the game is not on … is it channel 2 or what ???WTF…..

  35. Stan says:

RG for the Skins looking great…

  36. Nick says:

    RGIII is looking good

  37. BigP says:

It’s great to have football back. The long march to a championship starts today. Niners over the Pack: 27-23

  38. undercenter says:

Good luck to the Niners and all their fans.

  39. Bayareafanatic says:

Poor Luck is going to get ruined….

  40. Nick says:

NO is done. Brees just threw an interception.

  41. Crab15 says:

    RED ZONE EXECUTION!!

  42. Brotha Tuna says:

Whoops! I thought Skins were choking; NOT!

  43. MidWestNiner says:

BAD throw by Brees. Now I believe it’s over.

  44. MidWestNiner says:

    It’s game time!!!

  45. big niner says:

shirt off ( scary) game face on really scary!!!

  46. iTeo says:

    Let’s go 49ers ….

  47. msclemons67 says:

Did the 49ers elect to receive?

  48. Hoferfan67 says:

if they’re productive on 1st and 2nd down, they win.

  49. Hoferfan67 says:

Two runs – looks like ball control.

  50. Chris says:

There’s that overrated LB clay matthews…

  51. Sleeper says:

The first drive of the season ends with Alex getting sacked. -1

  52. Nick Row says:

    The o-line must play better

  53. Nick Row says:

    BS call by thr refs

  54. big niner says:

    wtf???

  55. Hoferfan67 says:

Refs with bad calls here we go!!!!!!!!!!

  56. iTeo says:

bad call right off the bat ..damn rep. ref.

  57. MidWestNiner says:

Why was there was a passing play on third and short? Staley also nees to do better than that or it’s going to be a long game. And can someone tell me how Spillman was called for an illegal block?

  58. Sleeper says:

And the Pack open up with 4-wide, playing right into the defenses weekness.

  59. BigP says:

4 WR set. Rodgers in the gun, throwing short passes. What a surprise.

  60. msclemons67 says:

    ALDON SMITH!

  61. Hoferfan67 says:

    Yes!!!

  62. BigP says:

Smith made a fantastic play and then rips his helmet off. Not the sign of maturity I was looking for after a rough offseason.

  63. Hoferfan67 says:

    These refs are killing me!!!!

  64. ribico says:

    idiot refs!!!

  65. MidWestNiner says:

Two very bad calls so far.

  66. Stan says:

Yep..those refs hate those SF freaks..the mid west values Jim brags about..

  67. Nick Row says:

    Fcuk the refs

  68. Crab15 says:

    Two horsebleep calls already!!!

  69. Hoferfan67 says:

RGoodell get these clowns out of the NFL.

  70. big niner says:

    f the refs!!!

  71. I.P. Daily says:

    The fix is in…

  72. BigP says:

Harbaugh is literally spitting mad on the slo-mo replay. That was Cowher-esque.

  73. Hoferfan67 says:

Oh here’s another ref blown call! Can you say THREE!!!!

  74. Crab15 says:

    I hate Joe Buck!

  75. Stan says:

Is that worth a challenge? even if they win?

  76. iTeo says:

    it’s a catch ..bad challenge

  77. Chris says:

Boy it sure looks like Rodgers is picking apart this defense. Who could have predicted that one…When he’s flushed out, he runs for 9 yards.

    • Chris says:

Wait, I know where I saw this, it was in Denver. then half the fans here said SF didn’t game plan for Denver. Gosh, I hope they didn’t gameplan for GB either if that’s the reason for this…

    • ribico says:

Sack! Better modulate your Rodgers fanboi-ism.

  78. fesnyc says:

i’m guessing the real refs get the contract they want after this. pathetic.

Aldon Smith, beast that he is, has to know that the correct movement is to “keep helmet on”, not “go ahead and take helmet off excitedly” after a sack. tough call, but that wasnt the right move there. gotta play heads up ball.

  79. Stan says:

Jim lost his cool..not good. Cost the team.

  80. msclemons67 says:

Justin Smith just scared Newhouse into a false start.

  81. Nick Row says:

    Big play here

  82. Stan says:

Fake refs have the same twang as real ones..

  83. msclemons67 says:

    Wow – jailbreak

  84. Nick Row says:

    Nice

  85. Crab15 says:

That’s how you do it Hofe!!

  86. fesnyc says:

big stand, given the idiotic calls.

  87. Stan says:

    WHEW!…Williams scares me.

  88. Chris says:

Still scary to see Kyle Williams return punts. I held my breath until he ran away from the ball

  89. Hoferfan67 says:

MC will have a big game underneath. Yes.

  90. DS94everXev says:

    Wow

Refs helping Pack out. Never woulda thought that.

  91. fesnyc says:

“Smith to Crabtree” – damn, i like the sound of that

  92. jason says:

If smith is just going to run for his life, can we have kaepernick in please.

  93. msclemons67 says:

    Hunter looks really, really fast

  94. MidWestNiner says:

    Dear Roger Goodell,
Give the real refs what they want so we fans can have some halfway decent @#$&!& refereeing.

    Signed,
    MidWestNiner

  95. Hoferfan67 says:

AS needs to keep the ball low.

  96. jason says:

That’s two catches for MC. Grant predicted 8. 6 more to go. Good call Grant.

  97. jason says:

    RANDY MOSS BABY!!!!!!

  98. MidWestNiner says:

Passing game looks good so far.

  99. angusinCanada says:

i like hunter getting his looks

  100. msclemons67 says:

    And David Akers time… /sigh

  101. iTeo says:

    throw a little lower AS

  102. Crab15 says:

    Too high, darnit. Why Delanie?

  103. MidWestNiner says:

    Walker should have had that.

  104. Stan says:

How do you kick a football that far so straight?..nice.

  105. fesnyc says:

for the sake of Harbaugh’s ticker, i hope we go 16-0

  106. big niner says:

Tell me this game doesn’t mean something to JH…like I said…..

  107. Chris says:

Holy moly, we kicked a fg because we couldn’t convert on 3rd down…. UGH!!!!!
Randy Moss one on one coverage and not even a look? Come on Roman tell him he HAS to throw to Moss in those situations. You know you can kick the field goal if it doesn’t work out, but you have to give the HOF receiver a chance to win the match up!

  108. msclemons67 says:

Is that Bruce Miller with the Rathman style bloody nose?

  109. Hoferfan67 says:

Damn, tell CMatthews to cut his nails. Nice slice there on JS’s nose.

  110. Bayareafanatic says:

    Good Drive….

  111. big niner says:

    Let’s go D!!

  112. 49er42 says:

A turnover would be nice now.

  113. msclemons67 says:

Seriously Packers – Benson up the middle isn’t going to work against the 49ers.

  114. Hoferfan67 says:

How many missed tackles do we expect from DG today! Feast or?

  115. Hoferfan67 says:

    AldSmith looks quick today.

  116. Stan says:

Yep,Buck get aroused at Roger’s passes…somebody tell Joe,Rogers is a Berzekeley alum. Bring him back to reality.

  117. fesnyc says:

Aldon Smith does not give up on the play. love his motor

  118. msclemons67 says:

    Great coverage by Tarell there

  119. Hoferfan67 says:

Damn, close – they’ll come back to that today.

    • Chris says:

It was close. If that pass is a closer to the outside shoulder its a TD. I expect to see that play again also.

  120. Nick Row says:

    Excellent coverage by Brown

  121. MidWestNiner says:

The secondary is getting picked apart right now.

  122. big niner says:

T brown with the sick mitts.

  123. 49er42 says:

    Good stop by the D.
lets get a couple of first downs then try to make some big plays down field.

  124. ribico says:

A 9 minute 92 yard drive would be exceelent about now.

  125. MidWestNiner says:

So far so good after one.

  126. Chris says:

I’d like to see them run run run since this packer D can’t stop it. 5, 3, now just need 2. Please don’t pass here on third down.

  127. big niner says:

    Where’s VD?

  128. fesnyc says:

    smart play by Alex

  129. Stan says:

Jack in the Box’s wife..says “no nookie” for you in a commercial. WHAT the?..Wheres Tipper when you need her?..jesus..

  130. DS94everXev says:

    TB looking great!

  131. Nick Row says:

VD was wide open on that previous play

  132. MidWestNiner says:

I’m shocked. A good call by the refs.

  133. iTeo says:

VD was open on the 3rd down …AS didn’t even look ..

  134. angusinCanada says:

shoulda been Pass Int. – but that was a late hit too

  135. msclemons67 says:

The Concussed One (Aikman) is being an idiot again. Blatant roughing the passer there.

  136. big niner says:

    two penalties on that play

  137. msclemons67 says:

C’mon Alex – get those passes down.

  138. Chris says:

Gosh there’s that overrated LB clay matthews again. One sack one QB hit. Who was it that was going to shut him down?

  139. angusinCanada says:

    Smith to Crabtree? Superbowl bound!!!

  140. big niner says:

what did I say about crabs on the slants??/

  141. Hoferfan67 says:

    Nice pass!

  142. ribico says:

    Crabtree killing it!

  143. Crab15 says:

    Alex to MC all day

  144. Nick Row says:

MC is having a nice game so far

  145. 23jordan says:

    CRABTREE!!!!

  146. MidWestNiner says:

Crabtree is looking mighty good right now.

  147. Bayareafanatic says:

Smith looks good so far… Nice slant to Crabs.

  148. fesnyc says:

    oh baby!!!!

  149. msclemons67 says:

    HALLELUJAH!!!!!

  150. Chris says:

4 catches for MC. Might have to revise your prediction Grant. He might have 16 catches this game.

  151. iTeo says:

    yeahhhhhhhhh Randy

  152. MidWestNiner says:

    RANDY MOSS!!!

  153. Hoferfan67 says:

I said they’d use RM in the RZ. wwwhhheeewwww!

  154. Stan says:

    uh-oh! Randys back!

  155. ribico says:

Not 9 minutes but I’ll take it!

  156. big niner says:

    mass MOSS

  157. Crab15 says:

    Alex!!! Moss!!! Red Zone!!!

  158. 23jordan says:

    Nice Alex!!!!

  159. iTeo says:

Randy decided to play today :)

  160. Stan says:

More effort from Randy already then in a year in Oakland..

  161. msclemons67 says:

What a perfect play call – Moss was wide open. Kudos to Roman.

  162. Bayareafanatic says:

    Nice pass. Welcome Randy Moss.

  163. Chris says:

No one on here gave you credit Grant. You so far have nailed it. Crabtree a big part of the o, and RANDY MOSS has his first TD as A NINER BABY!!!!

  164. oneniner is Alive says:

    wide open – moss

  165. Stan says:

No red zone blues this year.

  166. fesnyc says:

its early, but i sure like our tough D and Alex distributing the ball downfield. humm baby.

  167. Sleeper says:

Randy MFin’ Moss! I’m insanely stoked I just watched Randy Moss catch a touchdown pass for the San Francisco 49ers. YESSS

  168. 49er42 says:

    Good start.
    Now lets get a turnover!

  169. Nick Row says:

That throw was a little behind Moss, but RM was so open that it didn’t matter.

    Nice play

  170. Hoferfan67 says:

Now they will start using MM underneath along with the run. Then when they least expect it….VD deep!

  171. Coffee's for closers says:

GC said: “The Packers are having a really tough time stopping the run.”

It would absolutely kill you to give credit to Alex Smith wouldn’t it? I mean do you fear your heart will stop or that you might suddenly experience an embolism because I just can’t fathom why you are so reluctant to give credit where it’s do.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Read the sentence before that, Schmendrick.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Oh, don’t even try to defend it. You made it very clear that he threw to a “wide open” Moss. You can’t act innocent but that was just as much of an attempt to take credit away from Smith as the comment about GB not stopping the run.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Case in point. We have 42 yards rushing but 90 yards passing but yet GB cant stop our RUN game? No that isn’t an attempt to deflect credit from Smith.

    • msclemons67 says:

@Coffee Smith threw the ball behind a wide open receiver. Slow your roll.

  172. big niner says:

    lets frustrate AR now!!!

  173. Crab15 says:

Gotta love Alex getting in Clay Mathews face after the roughing call! Ballzy!!

  174. Jt_oSnowlovan says:

The Haters Cohn just keep needlin!

  175. Hoferfan67 says:

Need to attack the ball…time for a turnover.

  176. Stan says:

    GOOD REFS!

  177. msclemons67 says:

Blatant foul there – nice camera work by the FOX crew today.

  178. Hoferfan67 says:

    Good call.

  179. Stan says:

    GOOD REFS2!

  180. Nick Row says:

    Good call

  181. msclemons67 says:

Crimeny – how did Rodgers do that? Argh!

  182. MidWestNiner says:

    Gotta stop those Niners secondary.

  183. Hoferfan67 says:

    Turnover. Come on1

  184. angusinCanada says:

Okay, bending is complete….time to not break

  185. Hoferfan67 says:

9er need to use KW the same way.

  186. 49er42 says:

    Need a stop!

  187. Hoferfan67 says:

    These refs are losing control.

  188. ribico says:

Why isn’t that unsportsmanlike on Findley?

  189. MidWestNiner says:

    How is that pass interference?!

  190. big niner says:

BS call!! I guess his ankle doesn’t hurt that bad, flopper!!

  191. Stan says:

ref aided…bad refs…This is going to be the story of the game..ref calls. I can see it already.

  192. Crab15 says:

Never heard such a whining crowd. Wine with that cheesehead?

  193. big niner says:

Goodell, get it done!!! garbage calls.

  194. Hoferfan67 says:

If 9ers win, the focus is ref calls, if the Pack win, then they played great in Lambeau. lol

  195. Chris says:

I wish I wasn’t right about our suspect Secondary. Second half adjustments are going to kick this secondary in the teeth. And where is that pressure so many on here were adament that JS and Aldon smith would eat up the GB line.

  196. 49er42 says:

    Bad call.
I am concerned the refs are going to determine the game.
we need to get more pressure on Rogers.
    Also need a TD drive.

    • Chris says:

The refs are making some bad calls, but the secondary is also playing incredibly bad. Culliver isn’t even locating the ball in the air on any play.
Brown had one good knock down on bad placement by Rodgers but has been exploited since.

      • ribico says:

Chris. This is Aaron – fing – Rodgers and the Packers. The team that scored 1,000s of points last season. They’ve held them to a single score this half. They are doing just fine so far.

And BTW, Packers aren’t the only team that will be making half-time adjustements

  197. MidWestNiner says:

I’m noticing the football commercials are all geared towards the Packer fans.

  198. Bangkok Niner says:

Finley looks like he’s been taking a lesson from the European Wendyballers….. Shot one minutes, prancing like a spring chicken the next…… ?!$&@/.!!!!!!

  199. ribico says:

Packers *better not settle for FGs if they want to keep up with us.

  200. angusinCanada says:

    9ers passing at will….

  201. big niner says:

Ball controlling drive, then score a TD!!!

  202. Chris says:

I can imagine a half time call to the refs telling them to cool it on the flags.

    • Chris says:

I think these refs are so scared to miss a call they are attempting to call anything and everything. Goodell will make a halftime call to the extra supervisor upstairs.

      • Medic One says:

I agree there have been too many flags, but I think the Packers will challenge SF deep because of the overcalling of the refs. PI seems to be there bread and butter call. Any contact, not sure, just call PI and we’ll sort it out later.

    • ribico says:

lol… maybe they called at the two minute

      • Medic One says:

LOL, I just had the same thought! It appears they got a quick memo, that’s for sure.

      • Roger Goodell says:

It took me from the 1st quarter to get through. They kept throwing the flag instead of answering the phone. We had to actually run someone down from the officiating box. My apologises.

  203. MidWestNiner says:

Loved Smith’s reaction to that blatant passing interference by the Packers.

  204. Medic One says:

That audible confuses me. You have an obvious one on one match up with Moss. You see it. You audible to a run to Gore. Confusing…

  205. big niner says:

Lets get a TD now before halftime cuz they’re getting th ball in the second half. We need to keep the presssure on them.

  206. Crab15 says:

    Catch the ball Walker

  207. big niner says:

still not as bas as that pass interfernce call

  208. Hoferfan67 says:

    Come on DW.

  209. MidWestNiner says:

Walker is not having a good game this far.

  210. iTeo says:

    Catch the damn ball DW

  211. angusinCanada says:

Anthony Davis – dancing in the air haha

  212. iTeo says:

Where is KW ? haven’t heard his name on offense.

  213. Hoferfan67 says:

OK it’s VD…time. 11-85 connection over the LB.

  214. Bangkok Niner says:

Fair to say these officials are second rate for both teams…..

  215. MidWestNiner says:

Don’t look now, but Crabtree is halfway to 100 yards receiving.

  216. Hoferfan67 says:

    COME ON GR! Crap.

  217. Nick Row says:

Damn, that was a big stop on 3rd and 1.

  218. big niner says:

Horrible play calling!!! what is that? They need to go for it!!

  219. Crab15 says:

It was too obvious that we were going to run up the gut. Put in Moss as a decoy on 3rd in 1.

  220. big niner says:

    ck 7 time option

  221. MidWestNiner says:

I say go for it on fourth down. Th Packers won’t be expecting it.

  222. Medic One says:

Are 3 points really going to make a difference in this game? I wish they’d go for it.

  223. big niner says:

    horrible play calling!!

  224. Big Suede says:

The playcalling is killing me- Moss, VD, Crabs- THROW IT TO THEM. Forget williams and walker- forget the short 5 yard gains.

This GB secondary SUCKS! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT

  225. big niner says:

    pick 7?? hopeful

  226. Medic One says:

hey they figured out how to call false starts on the offense.

  227. MidWestNiner says:

    Aldon Smith looking damn good.

  228. Medic One says:

+1 49ers secondary. that is a long time to cover a wr

  229. big niner says:

that timeout will burn them watch!! pick 7 p willis underneath!!!

  230. ribico says:

What do you call the secondary that drive???

  231. big niner says:

    KW time!!!

  232. Hoferfan67 says:

Textbook DB play on that one.

  233. Big Suede says:

now throw Kaepernick out there for the last 30 seconds!

  234. MidWestNiner says:

    Nice return by Williams.

  235. msclemons67 says:

    CK7!!!

  236. Crab15 says:

    CK7 wow.

  237. Big Suede says:

There you go Roman! Just listen to Big Suede!

  238. big niner says:

    CK7 smirk, lol

  239. fesnyc says:

go for the 7, Harbaugh! Post to Moss

  240. Hoferfan67 says:

FG not having a good game.

  241. msclemons67 says:

    WTF was that?

  242. Nick says:

    AS didn’t even look deep

  243. big niner says:

    lets go Akers!!

  244. msclemons67 says:

    Akers attempting another record… /sigh

  245. fesnyc says:

    wow. standing ovation.

  246. Nick says:

    Wow, 63 yard FG

  247. BigP says:

A 63 yard field goal, off of the goal post, is a good sign.

  248. big niner says:

doink, awesome as my 4 year old would say

  249. 23jordan says:

    Akers!!!! MVP!!!

  250. Hoferfan67 says:

The underneath was working and they go with an out??! Those are GR calls.

  251. Bayareafanatic says:

    Akers still offensive MVP

  252. MidWestNiner says:

    63 yard FG!!!!!

  253. Medic One says:

WOW! The raiders kicking game has nothing on our kicking game.

  254. Crab15 says:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

  255. Nick says:

Akers is the MVP of the half. Let’s hope we get more TDs than FGs in the 2nd half

    • ribico says:

Holding most explosive offense ever to one score? Defense is the collective MVP for sure.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

So far I’m getting my wish for a defensive game, on our side at least.

Alex has done a HELL of a job keeping drives alive and giving the D time to rest between Rodgers drives. We’ve seen more passes to WRs than we saw in the entire last month of 2011.

  256. big niner says:

momentum at half time…..our D needs to come out and make a statement.

  257. Crab15 says:

Very very good half for Alex! Last 2 plays GB corners new what was coming, Alex had to play it safe there.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Exactly. GR needs to go underneath to MM or MC or KW. An out? They were playing for the FG a little obviously.

  258. 49er42 says:

    Conservative play calling.
I understand it; but I would like a bit more risk taking.

    • big niner says:

They need to open it up more, plus that run on 3rd down was too predictable, How about that naked bootleg with a TE option across the field. Or sprint right option which is a staple of the WCO.

  259. big niner says:

    David Elamakowski…..lol

  260. ribico says:

Keep it up! Niners need to NOT take the 3rd quarter off like they did so many times last year.

  261. Bangkok Niner says:

    What a kick!!!

  262. Nick Row says:

    Arizona is beating Seattle 10-3

  263. big niner says:

where are the funny lineups staley at TE or a reverse or something? mix it up a little.

  264. Nick Row says:

On a side note, Stephen Hill looked really good. Hill might make Baalke regret passing on him in the 1st round.

  265. Brotha Tuna says:

Jimmy Johnson, Howie Long, and Michael Strahan all commented on good SF secondary play despite some here bashing ‘em. It’s AR & The Pack for crimeney’s sake! 7 points at Halftime.

  266. Crab15 says:

Glad that Harbaugh replay challenge didn’t come back to bite us.
Bowman is the one who over sold it to coaches that it was a drop.

  267. Chris says:

This is where I see the real challenge coming for SF. We’ll see if there is an adjustment to the number of flags being thrown pretty early in the third quarter.

  268. ribico says:

not fooled on that 3rd and 1!

  269. msclemons67 says:

Bad decision by Rodgers there – Cobb was wide open for the 1st down.

  270. big niner says:

lets go offense, mix it up use tthe clock and confuse them

  271. Woody says:

They don’t need to get too crazy, if you have a better team you just play your game.

  272. 23jordan says:

    Throw the ball away Smith!!

  273. MidWestNiner says:

Breakdown with the OL and Smith there.

  274. fesnyc says:

Crabs with some RAC – nice!

  275. Woody says:

Manningham is a bit soft eh?

  276. Crab15 says:

Who can make a play? Crabtree can

  277. msclemons67 says:

Nice play design there – using Crabtree correctly

  278. angusinCanada says:

hopefully this will silence the crabtree bashing

  279. Woody says:

But Crabs is tough I’ll tell ya.

  280. MidWestNiner says:

Crabtree is putting opposing Ds on notice today.

  281. big niner says:

    keep it rolling!!

  282. Crab15 says:

    Alex!! Way to go VD

  283. Bayareafanatic says:

    Wow offense looks impressive!!!!

  284. big niner says:

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how quite is it there?, VD should have scored

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Yeah. It was quiet enough to hear Akers’ kick Bonk off the crossbar!
We’ll lose this review; time to punch it in.

  285. msclemons67 says:

Uhhh… Packers… you might want to cover #85, lol

  286. MidWestNiner says:

    PASSING CLINIC BABY!!!

  287. big niner says:

VD should have ran towards the sideline, he would ahve scored..

  288. Nick Row says:

VD … Run the dude over

  289. 49er42 says:

Need a TD not a fg

  290. big niner says:

Score a TD here and unleash the Dogs

  291. Chris says:

Did I say AR would pick apart SF’s secondary. I bumped my head pretty good. Alex Smith is picking apart GB’s secondary. Who would have guessed that headline! I would have expected to win the lottery before I saw that happen.

  292. BigP says:

This is a dominant performance by the Niners. There is noticable improvement across the board. TD Hunter!

  293. I.P. Daily says:

Woulda shoulda coulda… who has the lead?

  294. Woody says:

    replay will turn that back

  295. ribico says:

Hopefully this is the best of all worlds. Niners win. Packers exposed. NFL totally embarrassed by scab refs, we get the real ones back.

  296. big niner says:

Sprint right option to Crabtree, a staple of the WCO.

  297. Woody says:

hope we show some playing calling now……..

  298. big niner says:

    fade to RM

  299. BigP says:

    “on the running back” Lol.

  300. Willie niner says:

We need to score here!!!! GO 9ERS….

  301. Adam707 says:

Tukuafu has done that twice today, got away with it the 1st time, that time not so lucky. Stupid penalty

  302. big niner says:

    awwwwww crabs

  303. Adam707 says:

    Look at 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  304. 23jordan says:

    Crabtree, wide open!

  305. msclemons67 says:

    Really nice throw there

  306. Adam707 says:

VD TD, Gosh i love saying that. You are forgiven Smith

  307. Bayareafanatic says:

Smith missed one but made made up for it right away.

  308. Willie niner says:

    In Vernon Davis we trust!!!!!!!!

  309. big niner says:

lol VD, the not top 10 plays

  310. BigP says:

Vernon is getting clowned on Sports Center tonight for getting stuffed at the goal post.

  311. fesnyc says:

    great drive!

but sorry, Alex has got to see that toss to Crabs at the back of the end zone.

hey, 23-7 and still asking for perfection: feels like 1984!!

  312. MidWestNiner says:

Crabtree was wide open Smith!!! But good way to make up for it with the touchdown to VD.

  313. undercenter says:

    Niners looking good for sure.

  314. LSX says:

Smith totally blew the wide open Crabs, but that throw to Davis was perfect. Nice job offense

  315. Crab15 says:

    Alex…… thread the needle baby!!

  316. Woody says:

    Awesome, let’s stay aggressive!

  317. angusinCanada says:

At this moment, Vegas has 49ers as superbowl favourites, fo sho!

  318. fesnyc says:

i guess we dont miss Josh Morgan that much ;-)

  319. Brotha Tuna says:

Vernon loses dunk contest! LOL. I’ll take it with the score. : -)

  320. angusinCanada says:

Cannot let GB score on this drive!

  321. msclemons67 says:

The Packers have 27 yards rushing. This makes me smile.

  322. fesnyc says:

seems like a chippy game all day, right? GB getting physically beat up

  323. big niner says:

    more confusion on D!!

  324. big niner says:

    where’s the holding call????

  325. msclemons67 says:

    Finley felt Willis coming.

  326. big niner says:

perfect place for a play action deep pass!!

  327. 23jordan says:

    Defense is freakin unreal!!

    • rebelscum74 says:

How about that 11, Guy is like rocky crap beat out of him, you, me and every one calling him a bum!!!! Nobody likes him! Looks like he is on his way out a couple years ago! Aarron Rodgers, Like Appollo Creed, on all the comercials, Danicng around, saying he is the best, making bets with muscians, game far from over, but would be fun to see Aarron in the smith jersey, He can wear mine when he comes back to chico, Hope the Ninners win and Alex can yell YO ADRIAN!!!! I have doubted Alex but the man gets whack by Hawk jumps up pitches to Gore for a first down, Keeping Pluging Alex, You scare me, but Keep plugging baby!!!

  328. rebelscum74 says:

How about our Coaching staff? Not bad! Packers are tough, Lets keep coming! Way to use the weapons! Lets Go VD! Awesome!

  329. msclemons67 says:

Run it down their throats – take 7 minutes off the clock.

  330. Brotha Tuna says:

    Dear Coach Roman-
Please, please, PLEASE don’t go turtle mode!

  331. big niner says:

    body blows

  332. undercenter says:

    Gore!

  333. fesnyc says:

Frank Gore, still doing it after all these years. stud.

  334. Crab15 says:

    Gore! Too much weaponry.

  335. 23jordan says:

Why won’t Smith just step up in the freakin pocket and throw the ball out of bounds!

    • Adam707 says:

Give a rest dude, are you watching the game? Why do you post nothing but negativity when there is so many positives??

      • 23jordan says:

        Adam707,

Mind your business, I don’t tell you what to post. You give it a rest. Are you the new blog editor now?

Here’s another one for you. Kendal Hunter wide open in the middle of the field on that 3rd and 5!!

      • ribico says:

How about this positive? AS 4th highest rating of all QBs so far this weekend

      • Adam707 says:

Just asking you questions. You are so negative its sad. Why not give credit when credit is due? Alex is out playing Rodgers, yet you decide to nit pick every wrong doing. What is your thought process?

      • 23jordan says:

        Adam,

If you find a post where I paid Smith a compliment today, you stay off of the blog for 2 weeks? Bet??? I said I would call it both ways and I have. So just as I said, mind your business if you don’t know what you speak.

      • Adam707 says:

Then thats my bad. I havent read all 600 comments. I’ve only seen the select negative comments about AS, i did notice there was nothing said about the beauty pass to VD, but you were quick to point out the missed MC.

    • MidWestNiner says:

He really didn’t have any chance to on that last sack he received.

    • BigP says:

Smith has looked very good today. If he stepped up in the pocket to throw it out of bounds it would be intentional grounding. You have to be outside of the pocket to throw it away.

  336. MidWestNiner says:

    Gore’s still got it.

  337. big niner says:

    bang bang bang!!

  338. Willie niner says:

As long VD keep catching TDS I dont care he is not a basketball player…..

  339. msclemons67 says:

The run was working… wtf Roman?

  340. big niner says:

Why do we not run any screen? or where ir our trickery?

  341. big niner says:

lets buckle down Defense!! not a time to miss tackles. Fangio needs to mix it up a little, how about a CB blitz?

  342. I.P. Daily says:

    Peanut gallery…

  343. MidWestNiner says:

Willis is on the sideline. Wonder what’s up.

  344. big niner says:

    )———–> man

  345. msclemons67 says:

Wow – Goldson just smacked Jennings

  346. Stan says:

The rout is on!.good thing I picked the 49ers…Kyle is not enough to stop the Harbaugh hammering..

  347. big niner says:

Cry me a river……there was nothing wrong with that play. You can’t call a pass interference when the Qb throws it like that.

  348. Woody says:

    solid catch by Williams :)

  349. MidWestNiner says:

Put this game out of reach Niners.

  350. Willie niner says:

We need to score here!!!!, and whats up whit PWillis on the side line?

  351. big niner says:

slow methodical drive. I wish jacobs was here too for this party.

  352. Woody says:

    WE NEED ANOTHER TD

  353. Bayareafanatic says:

    Eyes downfield Smith

  354. big niner says:

CK 7 would have been gone

  355. msclemons67 says:

Ok Andy Lee – time to be your usual MVP self

  356. big niner says:

safe play, I guess. lets get a booming kick!!

  357. Bayareafanatic says:

Milking the clock with 12 min to go. Hmmm

  358. Woody says:

Luckily the defense isn’t worn out because their work is about to begin.

  359. big niner says:

    penalty!!

  360. Chris says:

There’s that overrated LB again. Clay Matthews. It’s been a broken record. The kid has 2 sacks, 3 hits, and tackles for a loss. Way overrated.

    • ribico says:

What. Are you a Niners fan or Packers fan? Who gives a sh*t if we smack talk about an opponent?

      • Chris says:

I said Clay Matthews would be a handful. Then I listened to everyone with a keyboard say how stupid that was and how overrated Clay Matthews was. So overrated Staley has completely forgotten to block him.

      • ribico says:

Yeah, Clay really effected the outcome didn’t he?

  361. Woody says:

Looks like Harbaugh wants the D to win the 4th quarter

  362. big niner says:

    what??/

  363. MidWestNiner says:

What hold ref? Also don’t understand the last two playcalls.

  364. Stan says:

Thats what Jim gets for not playing for a first…

  365. fesnyc says:

    time for some offense.

  366. big niner says:

    on boobie!!! wtf?

  367. Stan says:

And going by the midwest refs..

  368. big niner says:

Did you see the block in the back of Boobie dixon???? when are the refs coming back?

  369. Sleeper says:

Throwing reviews away. HUGE JH supporter here, but wtf. Arn’t all scoring plays under review anyway?

  370. MidWestNiner says:

Complete B.S. The Packers were given a gift there by these pathetic refs.

  371. big niner says:

2 bad calls that lead straight to points.. we need to stop them on this conversion!!

  372. Chris says:

Normally I would be all over Harbaugh’s play calling to run run run in the 4th with 12 minutes left, but SF has been successful running. I don’t blame him for trying to take some time off the clock.

  373. 23jordan says:

Andy lee has to take the sideline and make the guy cut back to the middle. He did that on the preseason touchdown return as well.

  374. ribico says:

Penalty? Then no penalty? The replay shows there absolutely was. These guys are pathetic.

  375. Woody says:

This is good, puts pressure on JH to keep playing offense.

  376. Bangkok Niner says:

This game is far from over…….

  377. Neal says:

    Refs ((( suck))

  378. big niner says:

our offense needs to play now

  379. 23jordan says:

Refs missed the penalty on Gibson! Damn!

  380. msclemons67 says:

Don’t get cute now Roman. The run is working. Ram it down their throats and bleed the clock.

  381. Woody says:

If Niners are better they’ll still win this game. Just keep playing like you’re playing….

  382. Chris says:

2 bad challenges. UGH. Get the emotion out of the decision making.

  383. 23jordan says:

Throw the ball up the field. Crabtree is killing the pack. Gotta be looking for him.

  384. Nick Row says:

    GR is getting conservative

  385. big niner says:

We have a huge OLINE. It’s time to put leanard davis in an QB sneak it

  386. Chris says:

You knew there would be replacement refs covering this game. You can’t put the game in the ref’s hands. You have to do your job and tackle. SF really doesn’t have any room to cry about calls when you don’t play to win.

  387. MidWestNiner says:

If the Packers come back and win, they should give the game ball to the refs. Absolute hose job.

  388. Nick Row says:

    Tackle the guy

  389. fesnyc says:

Harbaugh is a bit too free with those challenges. hope we dont need that one later on.

  390. Neal says:

Harbaugh got to use his flags better, the refs sucked and with 9 minutes left we can get totally screwed.

  391. msclemons67 says:

    BOWMAN!!!!

  392. undercenter says:

    WTG Bowman

  393. 23jordan says:

    Defense!!!!!!!!!!

  394. MidWestNiner says:

    Nice pick Bowman!

  395. big niner says:

    )———————> man!!!!

  396. undercenter says:

    Gore!!

  397. msclemons67 says:

Old man Gore still has it! Oh man, nice run

  398. one says:

    …yes yes yes….

  399. fesnyc says:

Alex Smith outplaying Aaron Rodgers at his place – wow!

    • Neal says:

Niner’s defense has nothing to do with it?

      • fesnyc says:

it does, obviously. but Alex has played well, and Rodgers just made a rookie mistake with that INT to Bowman.

Alex has to give us another drive to close this out, tho

  400. 23jordan says:

    Gore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  401. Chris says:

Let’s be honest here. SF has lost the field position game all game long. The secondary has played lights out for as long as they could. If they lose this game, they played their hearts out. You can’t blame the refs, you can’t blame the players, the play calling has been suspect.

  402. MidWestNiner says:

    Frank Gore from 23 out!

  403. Nick Row says:

Was that helmet to helmet hit on Gore?

  404. big niner says:

Gore!! the refs can’t take this from us!!!

  405. Bayareafanatic says:

I didn’t like trying to Milk the clock in the 4th instead of going for the win. Makes me question our identity…

  406. big niner says:

Both or Green bays Td’s are suspect. Both by bad penalties or lack there of…

  407. big niner says:

    pshhhhhhhhhhhhh what ever

  408. Chris says:

I’m wondering if SF is back to shutting down the playbook because they feel they’ve won the game and arent’ interested in putting any more plays on tape for the next opponent.

  409. Nick Row says:

    BS call by the refs

  410. Adam707 says:

Where the Gore doubters at now?? Playing great, and with speed

  411. 23jordan says:

Replacement refs will give the home team at least 2 calls a game all year.

  412. msclemons67 says:

I hate, hate hate hate 3 man rush

  413. Woody says:

    #25 was being lazy!

  414. big niner says:

    play the bump!!

  415. MidWestNiner says:

    C’mon secondary.

  416. Nick Row says:

Why are they rushing only 3?

  417. big niner says:

    prevent garabage!!!

    • Neal says:

Dumb dumb having a 3 man rush, why change the game plan, we have been lights out, AR is havinga picnic with NO RUSH

  418. Woody says:

Nice idea to rush 3, really good coaching decision.

  419. Bayareafanatic says:

    Why prevent defense? Why

  420. Nick Row says:

They’re playing prevent D already. Stick to what’s worked all game and close the game out

  421. Woody says:

And now we’ll pull out a 3 yard and cloud of dust offense?

  422. Stan says:

Stupid defense…It hasnt worked since invented…but these idiot clone coachs lover “prevent”..

  423. big niner says:

I hate not having a killer instinct

  424. Chris says:

The secondary has kept this team in the game. I am one of their harshest critics, but you can’t leave them out to dry by only rushing 3.

    • Chris says:

The worst part about this closed up playbook is that all you can really do now is run the ball. You can’t agressively go over the middle, challenge with Moss or Crabtree. You have to instead worry more about running the clock out.

  425. MidWestNiner says:

We need a play clock killing drive. Doesn’t matter if it ends in a FG or TD.

  426. Woody says:

Wow, talk about a disappointing defensive series.

  427. Stan says:

Since the 60′s the prevent has been discredited…but coaches with crew cuts mentality love it.
The Raiders have blown a ton of games that way..

  428. fesnyc says:

beauty. heads up play by Alex, great call by the coaches

  429. msclemons67 says:

That was a West Coast Offense play right there! NICE!

  430. Bayareafanatic says:

    Excellent touch pass

  431. big niner says:

    good job AS

  432. Woody says:

That was a very heady play by Smith right there.

  433. rebelscum74 says:

    49 Milllerrrr!!!!

  434. big niner says:

    Better play calling please

  435. Chris says:

    naked bootleg….

    • Chris says:

That overrated lb again….Gosh someone tell Staley that Clay Matthews is overrated so he can get the confidence to actually block him.

  436. Woody says:

We have to force them to need two scores.

  437. big niner says:

    no screen calls at all?

  438. Bayareafanatic says:

    Alex pull the trigger

  439. 23jordan says:

This is where we find out whether or not Snith gas turned the corner. He need to make a throw and a receiver needs to make a play.

    Staley is garbage!

  440. big niner says:

    Horrible play calling horrible!!!

  441. msclemons67 says:

Why are the 49ers in the shotgun here? This is crunch time – put the ball in Gore’s hands. Argh.

  442. Stan says:

    Clay Mathews -steroid cheat.

  443. Bayareafanatic says:

Three step and out. Crabs was open for 5 yard gain.

  444. Sleeper says:

Joe just got SMOKED by Clay. No good! Better blocking will be needed to get in scoring position.

  445. Bayareafanatic says:

    Still game manager

  446. 23jordan says:

Smith steps up and takes off before the receivers even turn around. Step up and roll right maybe? Just maybe?

  447. msclemons67 says:

    oh damn that was close

  448. rebelscum74 says:

    3:37 lots rush the def!!!
    Whitner!!!!!!!

  449. Bayareafanatic says:

    Whitner got to catch that

  450. big niner says:

    31

  451. rebelscum74 says:

    Brooksssss!!!!! Psh Rush!!!!!!

  452. Bayareafanatic says:

Rogers trying to win, Niners trying not to lose.

  453. msclemons67 says:

stop it with the 3 man rush Fangio – you’re killing me

  454. big niner says:

    zone blitz time!!

  455. MidWestNiner says:

Need a stop, like right now.

  456. Chris says:

The blitz back to back and almost pick/ sac rodgers. Then they go back to 3 man rush and rodgers picks them apart. I wonder what Vic’s thinking here.

  457. Willie niner says:

    Fangio 3 man!!!!!!,

  458. Woody says:

Hey they figured out you can’t give Rogers time. So smart!

  459. msclemons67 says:

Brooks is doing some work now, ohhhh yeah

  460. MidWestNiner says:

    SACK!!! by Brooks!

  461. msclemons67 says:

    CULLY IN THE HOUSE!!!!

  462. undercenter says:

    YES!!!!!

  463. fesnyc says:

    huge play by Culliver

  464. big niner says:

    wooooooooooooooooooooo

  465. Woody says:

    holy cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  466. ribico says:

It’s fitting that Culliver makes the last play. What do you think, Grant?

  467. Stan says:

    Whoo-hooo. We win!

  468. Nick Row says:

    Game over

  469. Woody says:

Time to drink a Pliney babty!

  470. MidWestNiner says:

Ball game!!! Niners win at Green Bay for the first time since 1990.

  471. Chris says:

Brooks singlehandedly won this game in the 4th quarter for his team.

  472. fesnyc says:

    damn that was good.

look out NFC, there’s a new sheriff in town

  473. Ceadderman says:

    BOW B4 THE MASTER BISHES!!!

I said 27-20. My Spread was intact by the end of the Game.

    KNEEL SUCKAS!!! ^_^

    • ribico says:

Heh. I said 31 – 21. I am the prediction master! Oh, and Tim (not TIM)

      • Ceadderman says:

All 3 of us are. I had no doubt that our team could get it done.

It’s Rodgers and the Packers. They were gonna get theirs I had no doubt. But I knew we’d get ours.

I’m proud of Alex cause he didn’t just rely on Davis to get the Win.

Did he break 300 today? Not that I could see. But yet he sailed this ship to the Win. If Smith continues to play like this NFL MVP on the horizon. ^_^

      • ribico says:

Not if he continues to throw for 200 per , Ceadderman. Gaudy stats overrule results every time. ;)

      • Ceadderman says:

Haha true true. But if he has a 10+ Win Season and makes use of the targets like he did today? It’s a lock.

#15 played a HELL of a game today. On his way to redemption. One down 18 to go. :)

      • DS94everXev says:

No where close to 300. 220 I think.

    • msclemons67 says:

      /bow

You picked better than me Ceadder. I didn’t think the D could hold the Pack like that. What a game!

    • Ceadderman says:

Man that kick by Akers a thing of Beauty. He should be listed at the Top of the record and not because his name starts with an A. He didn’t do that in Denver where the air allows more hang time. :)

As far as the Officiating goes, I can’t say I had too much to complain about. There were the two calls(both blocks in the back incidentally) that I felt the Refs blew it on. Traditionally Defense doesn’t have block in the back on a Punt. But it was reasonable given that the offender was #37 and the player called was 27. Rookies will make that mistake. The second one was the one that allowed me to keep my spread intact but that was blatantly bad. I won’t complain cause we won.

Unlike Packer fans who will whine about 2 P.I. calls even though there was blatant Holding going on from their Line on those plays allowing Rodgers to get the ball out.

Great game in all facets imho. Started off ugly but the team got past that and played within themselves. I’m very happy with the result.

This game is proof that the 9ers snuck up on NOBODY last season.

  474. Grumpy Guy says:

Kicked their butts, old school style, with defense.

    1 down, 18 to go.

  475. Brotha Tuna says:

HEY GRANT! Wrong pick. You’re bad, you owe Wisconsen Cheddar to everyone! Bwahahahaha!

  476. msclemons67 says:

So now I’m a gibbering wreck. Could the 49ers please just win big or lose big this year? Just once? I’m an old man – my heart can’t take this crap.

    • rebelscum74 says:

Hang in their for the Ride!!!!! Dont know where we are going but this will be fun!!!!!!! And Stressful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! must eat health , lots of walks and keep a brown bag close!!!!!!!!

  477. MidWestNiner says:

Who has it better than us? NOOOBODY!!!!

  478. 23jordan says:

    Defense wins championships!!!!

  479. Larry David says:

Great team victory for the 49ers!

  480. rebelscum74 says:

    Way to Go Ninners!!!!! One
Game at a Time!!!!! Harbaugh for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  481. I.P. Daily says:

I can say it now AND DON’T DING ME!!! I remember Grant’s picks last year. He called ‘em wrong way more than sheer luck would have it. Best bet is if Grant calls a win bet on his loser, you cannot go wrong… -L- :- ) I’m smiling Grant, don’t be upset!

  482. big niner says:

The refs couldn’t take this game from us. BIG game guys BIG game!! subtract 14 points from GB and that’s the real score.

    Take that EAST coast media!!!!

  483. MidWestNiner says:

In this instance, I’m so glad my pick was wrong.

  484. msclemons67 says:

The only real threat to the 49ers for the NFC West title lost to Kevin Kolb. This has been the best opening weekend in a long, long time.

    • Chris says:

My thoughts exactly. Az winning is great for the 49ers because Kolb and company will lose to several other opponents while doing us the favor of beating the second best team in the division.

    • Ceadderman says:

Actually they lost to Skelton. Kolb couldn’t mess that read up for the go ahead unless Carroll paid him. Russell Wilson could have made that throw.

Gotta love when a QB competition is decided before the 3rd game of Preseason. You can pretty much bank that the guy picked is not up to the task. lol

  485. I.P. Daily says:

Smith, two TDs, QB= 126. See what Vee/Badfinger/Alexlover/Dingleberry says over at the Cron. Any of you haters want to step up to the plate?

    • msclemons67 says:

      Smith outplayed Rodgers.

      Massive embarrassment for Rodgers.

      • Ceadderman says:

Naw I can’t say Rodgers should be embarrassed. He stuck up for Smith when interviewers used the term “Game Manager”.

Rodgers just faced the #1 Defense in the NFL and still had a reasonably solid day. We’ll see them again in the Playoffs unless their record dictates otherwise. That’s a 3 pony race in the NFC North right now.

      • exgolfer says:

        MSC,

Massive embarrassment for Rodgers? Maybe. How about for you?

    • Chris says:

The 49ers won and all you want to do is call out 49er fans? Give me a break. Is your life that miserable that you can’t even enjoy an AWESOME freaking WIN?
Gosh, who cares what anyone thinks about Alex Smith. Obviously he doesn’t and neither do his coaches.

      • medic one says:

I totally agree with you here Chris. It’s like winning the lottery and complaining the check is too big.
Great win by Brooks on defense. Smith lead the offense and Brooks won the game for this team.

      • Ceadderman says:

Actually I’ll call em out too. If they show up at all this week. :p lmao!

NO HEART! Not a single stinkin one of those punks.

I see bad mouthing your QB when it’s late in the season and you’re out of the Playoffs. But before the 1st game is even played cause you have no faith in your team cause you got no heart?

Yeah I’ll call em out and call a Spade a Spade. It’s the least I can do after taking years of abuse from people whose collective knowledge of the game couldn’t fill a thimble.

An my life is good whether or not I do. :D

      • exgolfer says:

        Chris,

You are an incredible tool. You were talking so much crap about the 49ers, it was hard to tell which team you support. Then when the 49ers win, you try to hide behind being a 49er fan and tell everyone to lay off of you. Sorry, pal, no dice.

        Medic,

Your comment would be spot on in many cases, but, if you were to read all of Chris’ ruminations on this thread, you would see that he is a complete jackass.

    • Shoupbj says:

I will admit I was completely wrong on this game. I didnt trust Alex in a scoring duel with Rogers but he really played great ball. In fact I think the biggest disappointment other than the Ref’s was the play calling at the end of the game.

With that said I have never been so happy to be wrong.

  486. Silva says:

I literally have a headache, stomach ache, and I am sweating through my shirt. And it was all worth it.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Add a sore throat and that’s me. lol

    • Ceadderman says:

I don’t know about you all but I’m on cloud 99 with this Win.

      One down 18 to go.

Smith continues to play like today I’ll call it now…

      NFL MVP!!!

Don’t even know why Kappy was in the game. He didn’t do anything that Smith couldn’t do on that play. But hey he did get Akers just a little bit closer. ;)

      • ribico says:

Considering that crossbar bounce, that “little bit” closer made all the difference.

      • Ceadderman says:

Yes it did. But that ball hit dead on top of the Crossbar. That was sheer AWESOMENESS! An inch or two toward the field of play and it’s a miss. No way that makes it at the Stick though. Those winds are FIERCE. :p

      • ribico says:

That 8 point lead, rather than a 5 point one, had me *just* barely calmer towards the end of the game.

      • msclemons67 says:

haha Ribico – I was a nervous wreck on the final drive. If it had been a 5 point lead my liver would have exploded.

  487. MidWestNiner says:

Great game all around. Only complaint is the play-calling. We went conservative way too soon.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

I agree, MidWest, especially on D. SOOOOO glad they finally got off that three man rush towards the end, and hurried Rodgers a little. Sure seemed to work better than letting him stand back and dissect our secondary.

      What a great win!

    • BigP says:

I agree, they were playing very well. They should have kept it going, but that’s on the coaches.

    • msclemons67 says:

I slightly disagree. The run game was gashing the Packers. I thought Roman got a little too cute in the 4th quarter. Should have just rammed the ball down the Packers’ throats instead of doing the cutesy fly sweeps and crappy pass plays.

  488. msclemons67 says:

I’m not an Alex Smith fan but I have to give credit when it is due. He played a great game today. Salute to the Precious, he earned it.

    • DS94everXev says:

      msc

That is 2 out of the last 3 games where AS has outdone the opposing QB. Two guys who you’d call elite. How many other QB’s have matched up against elite QB’s and done as well or better than AS?

    • msclemons67 says:

      And you’re a cultist.

  489. ninermd says:

I would like to say to Sputnik. You were absolutely right the 49ers played 16 men on the field today. And STILL won like I SAID!!!!!! Wheeeeew! Wrong score bit hey I’m fn HAPPY!!!!

Grant I respect you, bit you were dead wrong and underestimated THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!!!! WHEEEEEW!!!!!!!

  490. KevinFFF says:

Hopefully the coaches will pay attention to the game tape and bench Alex Smith. They should have done it after the first quarter, and immediately put Nate Davis in.

    • Ceadderman says:

      >_> Not sure what to think here other than I think someone is trying to be a comedian. <_<

    • ribico says:

And Niners were a woeful 2-9 on 3rd down. Obviously they have not solved the issue that held them back so much last season.

      • MidWestNiner says:

That was a combination of bad play-calling, refereeing, and dumb penalties.

      • ribico says:

And obviously held us back as much today as it did all last season.

      • DS94everXev says:

        ribico

But AS didn’t throw an Int or fumle the ball on his sacks or any other player.

I think that makes AS the QB who has gone the longest (via attempts) now as a Niner QB without throwing an Int. Counting the playoffs to the 2011 regular season to now.

      • msclemons67 says:

That 2-9 on 3rd down would have killed the 49ers if the defense hadn’t been incredible.

Extending drives is a good thing.

      • exgolfer says:

        MSC,

The offense scored 30 points today. Are you saying they didn’t have a part in the win?

  491. Adam707 says:

MVP of the defense, Bowman. The guy played like a beast today. Looks like They feel more comfortable with him in coverage than PW, interesting.

    • msclemons67 says:

It was odd to see Willis on the sideline. I wonder if that was a scheme or if Willis is “working through something”.

  492. DS94everXev says:

2 out of the past 3 games, AS has out done DB and AR. The two hottest QB’s from 2011.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Problem with having that “elite qb” is that the rest of your team suffers so you can pay him. I’ve said it a million times…I would much rather have our team then have that great qb. Alex is perfect!

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Montana

If JR never played a pefect game (I think he has a mental disorder if he thinks he didn’t have like 20 of them), nobody has.

That said. I’m glad we drafted AS. Just wait till later in the season. Our rookie AJ/James will have more practice time and contribute to what we already saw. Keep in mind this year, we play a lot of horrible defenses. Last year we played a lot of good ones (Pitt/Baltimore on 3 days prep time). This was the first time AR and AS faced one another and AS had a real chance to win. And he did.

    • Chris says:

I agree. Not to take anything away from Smith or the amazing job our secondary did, but a rookie outplayed Brees today also. Granted that rookie got some amazing help early to build confidence and Brees had some unreal drops, but still, a rookie outplayed the same “elite” qb

      • DS94everXev says:

        Chris

Point is that AS beat 2 elite QB’s in the past 3 games. And AR is now 0-2 the past 2 in GB against decent defenses. How many of the elite QB’s have done that in their past 3 meetings with other elite QB’s (especially 3 games straight)?

Also, the Saints are really a mess. The Saints from last year are not the Saints this year. At least not yet.

  493. Jack Hammer says:

Very nice all around team win today. Alex played well, the o line was pretty solid, the upgrades at WR were evident, and the D looked like ’11 again. Fun day to be a 49er fan.

  494. DS94everXev says:

Bubba Paris just said MC saw his job was at stake after the Niners offseaon moves.

    Just saying, I’m not alone.

Great game by him. Really showed up. I was screaming “Go Crab!” on his 16 yard sideline reception before the ball even reached him. No drops by him, or any WR. Only DW screwed up and had a poor day catching the ball.

    • Adam707 says:

And was a 2nd read from a TD, but hey we scored the next play so w/e

    • 23jordan says:

Bubba Paris said 2 years ago that Alex Smith was not the answer at QB for the 49ers. Go figure. Bubba Paris???

      • Ceadderman says:

And so did you. What’s up Jordo, ready to finally eat this stone cold crow? Or you need it warmed up in the Nuker first? ^_^

      • Ceadderman says:

Actually you said much worse but that can be forgiven so long as you respectful now. ;)

      • 23jordan says:

Alex Smith played a pretty good game 20-26 and he got the receivers involved. 215 yards and a win. I respect that. My concern is the sacks. At what point does a defensive lineman fall on him and crack his shoulder. He had a few chances to get rid of the ball and held it too long. Other than that, Alex played well. I give the props when they are due. He did well.

    • Ceadderman says:

It was on the Line. They took 3 Receivers into Camp that hadn’t even played a single down for the team? Yeah 15 needs to play like a man possessed this season. I have no doubt that he will and soon I’ll feel confident enough in him to call him by name. But this is just one of many games this season. Redemption don’t come easy.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @ceadderman

Crab seem to have some mis-matches. Didn’t his 16 yard slant come against a LB or DL?

Not complaining about that at all. BW did a perfect job of getting his players in mis-matches. JR wasn’t always covered by the teams #1 CB on every play.

Seems like I was right about something with MC all this time. RM would go deep. The coverage is freaked about him. They run after him, and the underneath routes are open.

To MC’s credit, he looked faster and had seperation and didn’t drop any easy passes. He did what he was supposed to do. And we won.

      • Ceadderman says:

I believe that was their 3rd Corner that slant came against. He played off and out of position, when Alex threw 15 the ball it was too late. I could be wrong because I wasn’t keeping track of which Defender was where. I’m reasonably sure however that since that happened in the 1st Quarter that the Linebackers were nowhere near it because they were up front testing our Line. 2nd Quarter they backed off some to get some bodies in the middle where Smith was attacking them all day.

2nd Half they started off back at the Line and never really left. I don’t know what was goin on with Joe but no way any Linebacker should get the better of a Pro Bowl Left Tackle. Smith would drop back to Pass to find Mathews biting at his ankles for most of the day today. Say what you want about Smith “holding the ball too long” but Mathews ain’t slow. That guy is relentless to be sure but he shouldn’t have got a hand on Smith in those situations when he’s fallen on his face. I think Alex did a helluva job not turning the Ball over when Mathews got him the one time standing up. ^_^

      • DS94everXev says:

        Very true.

AS does not get the credit for how well he does all the non-stat things that help win games. QB rating doesn’t keep track of how many fumbles a QB has. Or how well he prevents a defender from causing a fumble on a fumble worthy hit which that last Matthews sack was.

I personally think that all the non-stat items when it comes to a player (QB especially) is more than 50% of his evaluation criteria.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Bubba Paris is an idiot. Crabtree’s health was the biggest reason for his improvement. Never did he think he was dropping down the depth chart. The additions the 9ers made at wr, only an idiot would think that Crab wasn’t going to be the first to benefit.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Montana

Remember the post game show at the end of game 1 last year?

Bubba ripped into AS like he had thrown 20 Int’s. Then a few weeks later, after the Philly game, he sat there biting his tongue. He had nothing to say. This year he sounds much more positive about AS after game 1.

      • AES* says:

        Absolutely agree Montana Man!

His starting position was never in doubt. Well maybe to the doubters only (lol).

      • Ceadderman says:

Then 15 was kidding himself if he went into Camp feeling good about his job. Baalke and Harbs didn’t sing Moss, Manningham and draft Jenkins because they were satisfied with the production at the Receiver position.

I’m not rooting against him, nor do I want him to Fail, but I guarantee that if 15 doesn’t have a solid season this year, this will be his last year with the 49ers. Look at his previous 3 Seasons and all the easy Passes that ended up on the turf instead of his hands.

You can deny it all you want but Parys was right to say what he said. He played the game, he’s seen it all at every position on the 9ers. Guys that have issues cannot hope to be complacent and not worry about they jobs. That’s how guys end up on the outside lookin in. That’s a fact. I don’t care how many yards he finished the season with. He was a GHOST in the Championsip game.

      • DS94everXev says:

“I’m not rooting against him, nor do I want him to Fail, but I guarantee that if 15 doesn’t have a solid season this year, this will be his last year with the 49ers. Look at his previous 3 Seasons and all the easy Passes that ended up on the turf instead of his hands. ”

Perfect! But some won’t care what you write. Also doesn’t mean that MC can’t do it now either. His career (at least on this team) is in his hands. Sink, swim, or ride a jet boat. It’s all up to him now.

      • 23jordan says:

        Ceadderman,

You’re wrong. Crabtree could post the same numbers as last year and he would be the starting WR on next years roster. He can’t be any better than the QB who throws it to him. Alex has been here 7 years and he’s still here through it all. Crabtree can’t throw it and catch it.
Crabtree didn’t have a touchdown today but he should have had 1. I think we both saw that one. let’s just count how many times we see that this year.

  495. domingo says:

One of the biggest if not the biggest regular season win in a while. To get the Packer monkey and the tradional Lambeau home-field ref job monkey off our back is unbelievable. Green Bay and the refs have tormented us over the years like no other. To beat them at Lambeau you have to be clearly better and we are. We are flat out a better team than Green Bay. I feel a drunk coming on!

    • Ceadderman says:

Be happy they were Replacement Officials. We woulda got jobbed out of the Win had the Negotiations ended during Preseason. I will take every bad call willingly this season cause these guys are Rookie Officials learning on the job. I can hang with a few bad calls.

Harbs may not make it past game 4 though. Dude was just a mad man out there giving it his all for the team. I’ve been a fan of Harbs since the San Diego Torros days. He hasn’t disappointed me yet. :)

      • domingo says:

I agree. It would have been worse we the real refs. I respect the NY Giants for beating the Packers at Lambeau last Jan. The refs homed the Giants on bad call after bad call but they still won. No matter what the Giants did to us I respect them for beating Green Bay at Lambeau in Jan. A mighty feat.

      • Ceadderman says:

With every decently solid game called by the Replacement Officials the tenuous hold the Incumbents had on the job becomes harder to keep.

I’m all for it. Perreira needs to go too imho. He let them get away with blatantly awful Officiating for years and you can see that he is stumping for their return every time he’s called upon for an impromptu review of the calls.

NOBODY could be this myopic where their crews are concerned.

  496. MidWestNiner says:

One more complaint. The final score should have been 30-14. That special teams TD by the the Packers was a blatant gift from the refs.

  497. Razoreater says:

Double check that bitch! Yea…Great victory. Now for The Handshake Part Deux. Time to kill the Lions and wipe that focking grin off of Scharwtzs’ face. Thanks for the happy ending Coach Harbaugh and Staff and Players!!

  498. DS94everXev says:

How many of you now are upset or scared we had to play AR and the Pack to open the seasoon?

The fact we beat them in GB. AS out did AR. Our D beat AR. Who on our schedule is going to be better?

    AS JH says….
    “NOBODY!”

  499. Fansince 77 says:

Niners went in and were the better team. And GB is pretty damn good. The Niner D is going to be there, and the offense is going to gain confidence and once everyone gets going, from Brandon Jacobs, to CK7 and the read option with Lamichael James, the Niners could very well have the most interesting and innovate offense, based on what they do with the run and the pass.

Oh yeah — Hunter looks explosive. Did you guys notice? Gore is a stud but Hunter can play and will be a factor.

You have to like Harbaugh’s team concept, where everyone plays an important part.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Zero surprises for me! Green Bay is good against bad defenses. The last 3 good defenses they played, they lost all 3.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @montana man

Great offenses usually get that way against bad defenses. When they play good defenses, they lose a lot of their flair.

  500. ribico says:

So looking forward to AR in that Niners jersey. That sh*t better be all over NFL net and ESPN!

    • MidWestNiner says:

      +100
      Can’t wait to see that!

    • msclemons67 says:

Wearing an Alex Smith jersey is the ultimate embarrassment and Rodgers earned it. He played like crap. The 49ers D had his number all day.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Not really Msclemon. There are worse jerseys he could wear.

      • msclemons67 says:

True MWN. He could be forced to wear a Rex Grossman jersey hahaha.

      • MidWestNiner says:

        Or a Ryan Fitzpatrick jersey.

      • I.P. Daily says:

        Or a Fatslob67 Wallmart jersey…

      • exgolfer says:

Goddammit, MSC, can you give the Smith bashing a f____ng rest? The whole team played well today, including Smith. What are you going to do if Smith somehow carries this level of play through the whole year? By continuing the bashing, especially after a game like today, you’re just digging yourself a deeper hole.

    • ribico says:

I don’t feel so bad for Aaron. He can go run up his stats against the rest of the league now.

      • DS94everXev says:

        ribico

The Packers supposedly have one of the weakest schedules.

Has AR ever beaten a top defense/team? One which had all their stars playing now. Because as we saw a few years ago, the Raiders were better than the Steelers minus TP (and if you saw the game last night, it was written into each players contract that only TP can tackle). And the 2010 NFC Title game, the Bears starting QB was hurt at the end of the first half.

  501. MontanaMan16 says:

Well Grant, glad to see you admittedly had this game all wrong. Really, I dont get what you were thinking. “Advantage Packers” was beginning to piss me off knowing our team is better than theres.

    • ribico says:

Well, he did nail MC’s stat line. Give him credit for that ;)

    • msclemons67 says:

Can’t really blame Grant here. The entire planet picked the Packers to win.

If you want to b*tch you should yell at ESPN, CBS, FOX and NBC too.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

I think Ditka picked SF, not that I’m recommending him as your wagering advisor.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Brotha

Terry Bradshaw an adament AS supporter picked the Niners. Don’t know if that makes you smarter or more right. But it does mean 5 Super Bowls between them picked the Niners.

      • msclemons67 says:

Good call Brotha – Ditka and 2 other ESPN dudes picked the 49ers. The respectable writers all picked the Packers though.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Clemons
‘Respectable writers’? I thought that Jordo, 19r, you and I are the respectable writers. Stan too.

      • 23jordan says:

        Tuna,

You got that right. I never thought for 1 moment they could beat us. I was more worried about the damn refs than I was the Packers. That defense can’t stop anyone, but their offense will outscore some teams.

  502. AES* says:

Just said good-bye to my last guests, and time to get to my favorite 49er blog.

    1. Alex was Alex – the consummate game manager! Looked and played in total control. Threw the ball with good touch and accuracy. May have missed Crabtree for a sure TD by forcing one the R.Moss, but he and MC will have plenty of opps to connect this season. Great overall game from AS. And he did something in beating the Pack that hasn’t been done since the days of the great Joe Montana. Yes, I love that Alex is building his own niche on his own merit.

Awesome field-goal by D. Akers at the end of the first half!
It gave the entire team a big lift and energy going into halftime.

Crabtree was solid. Caught everything thrown his way by my count. Showed some nice YAC today as well.

O-line played better than average. Staley brought his hard-hat and made things tough for C. Matthews for most of the game.

Frank Gore is a “Warrior!” leaving it on the field as usual!

Nice job fielding punts by K. Williams. The kid has ‘heart,’ nuff said!

Defense was outstanding. Nothing spectecular, just seemed to make the right plays at the right time.

Harbaugh looked like a fire breathing/spitting dragon early on, but was on top of his game and intently focused throught.

Great ‘team’ victory, especially considering our futlility against the Pack over the last two decades.

“ALL IN!” (with ALL 49ers players)

  503. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

By the way, the Niners were about 30% or so on 3rd down. We dominted much of the game. And then won the TO battle. The change of momentum swung back to our side after the NB Int.

Turnovers matter infinitely more important than 3rd down conversions. Only stat to follow is TO differential. You win that, you win games.

    • undercenter says:

Most of those were long 3rd downs which signifies poor something on first and second downs.

      • DS94everXev says:

There was at least 1 3rd and short, and we ran FG. I love FG, but he is not our short yardage runner. I know Jacobs is out. But Dixon should have come in.

I didn’t have a problem so much with the playcall as I did with the personnel on the field on that play. That is the coaches fault (JR/GR) more so than FG’s or player x.

Agreed DS. That was in the 1st Half I think it was. I was pretty peeved we didn’t go for it on 4th and short too after Frank came up just short of the 1st Down. Hell Alex Could have taken the snap and just leaned for it, it was that close to being converted.

Other than the few missed opportunities with personnel packages, that’s got to be my only gripe about the game. It’s early yet, I figure we’ll see things go smoother as the season goes along but instead of 3 this team should have had 7 to end the Half. Up 13 would have demoralized the Packers greatly going into the locker room. Up 9 was great though. :)

Well, I can’t wait to see the lack of response from the AS haters. For the first time he has the same coordinator for a second season. Today, he looked WAY more comfortable and in control of everything. Barring injury, and with a receiving core on par with other top QB’s in the league, AS should make top 10 in QB’s this year. We’re still a big run team btw, which is awesome.

“Haha true true. But if he has a 10+ Win Season and makes use of the targets like he did today? It’s a lock.
#15 played a HELL of a game today. On his way to redemption. One down 18 to go. :)”

    @Ceadd
    That would be Michael Crabtree!
No worries Ceadd, you will have plenty of opportunities to mention his name this season bud (lol).
But you are right, #15 had a good game, as did many other 49ers players.

    • Ceadderman says:

I’m sure you realized that I have sworn not to use his name until he earns the name. That’s how my Coaches did it when I played and I believe in tradition. I refuse to bash the man since he wears the Gold and Cherries, but until he proves himself consistently the name will continue not to be used.

I don’t hate him though. I just hate to see a waste of talent. :)

“I just hate to see a waste of talent. :)”

He entered the NFL as the best WR in college history. A good part of the disapointment is that it hasn’t shown itself. Today was the first time I feel he really made some plays. His stats weren’t great. But I don’t care. He looked sure of himself, made the catches and got positive yards every time I thought he could.

      • AES* says:

In case you and DS haven’t noticed, Crabtree plays better when AS plays better (lol).

Looks to me like the guy has done pretty good for “wasted talent” (hahaha!).

But if MC can average 7 catches and 70 plus yards per game, perhaps it’s best you don’t call his name. You’re not worthy!

“ALL IN!” (for ALL 49er players)

      • Prime Time says:

Exactly DS. Crabtree didn’t have great stats but he played hard, made some tough catches and looks slimmer. He was the best WR today.
        Great win!

        Prime

Notice how certain posters keep have never bothered to reply to positive post that either of us have made about MC and even try to spin what we said into a negative? We’ve written them.

Do you think that is proof that they are All In or that they are just here to fight? Because if they were all in, then they should be cheering on positive posts any other blogger writes about any player. Right?

Not to rain on the big victory that I predicted. Lol but one thumbs down I have is for joe staley. Garbage getting out muscled by a line backer. Again it was 11 on 15 the whole game and STILL punked the pack. SMACKED THE PACK!!!!!!! WHHEEEEEW!!!!!

    • msclemons67 says:

I dunno – Staley got beat twice by one of the best pass rushers in the league. Notice the coaches never felt the need t0 put extra help on Staley’s side – the RB and TE were helping Anthony Davis. I think Staley did ok; not great but not horrible.

      • Ceadderman says:

Got beat more than twice. It was sheer luck that 2 times he was on the ground behind Alex swiping at his heels.

Then of course he had the Hold that the Offense got penalized for. Joe should be pushing that guy all over the field as big a gap there is in their sizes. Joe is a Warrior but no way that should be happening. It’s not like Mathews was Aldon Smith in College. ;)

      • ninermd says:

Getting bull rushed by a lb an you’re supposed to be a top 100 player? Hell NO. He didn’t get beat by speed. He got beat by power from a man who is at least 50 pounds lighter. NO EXCUSE Staley got punked.

    • Ceadderman says:

Agreed. Even if it is Mathews. No excuse getting pushed around like that. */*

  507. ...scotch says:

Where Alex & the offense deserve credit is they did their part producing more 1st downs than GB & won the time of possession 33-27. They took the burden off the defense…

Now back to the BashAlexZone…headed up by the Cohn boys…

    Oh Grant…

Yes indeed there are Silos in California. If you cruise the 4 from Stockton you’ll see quite a few of them. I used to drive that route from Tuolumne County to Sacramento on my way to various concerts during my misspent youth. Oakdale, Merced and Fresno have em too. I could name more towns but I’m sure you get the drift. Open yo eyes man. :D
