Stafford on last year’s game against the 49ers: “There were some instances where we kind of beat ourselves.”

SANTA CLARA – Matthew Stafford spoke on a conference call Wednesday afternoon. He talked about the 49ers defense, what the 49ers offense does well, and what he remembers from their game last season. Here’s a transcript.

Q: What jumps out to you about the 49ers’ defense?

STAFFORD: It’s obviously similar group to the one we played last year. Physical up front, good in the back end, two really good linebackers. Doing a good job playing their scheme, playing well.

Q: Do you imagine you’ll see more of the 49ers’ dime defense? 6 DBs and Patrick Willis on the sideline.

STAFFORD:  I imagine we could get some  that. You know, they were just matching personnel with Green Bay so depending on what personnel is in the game for us, but if we do some of our stuff where we go four and five wide kind of stuff, I can see Perrish Cox getting some playing time for sure.

Q: Describe the closing minutes against the Rams last week.

STAFFORD:  We just had to execute. Came out in the first three quarters and really played well, just turned the ball over and – 3 times – obviously, I can’t do that again and expect to win.

Q: How did you bounce back from those INTs?

STAFFORD:  We had about half the game left to play. Two choices: either keep playing or hang them up, obviously decided to keep playing and you got to keep throwing. You got to get yourself out of it. Threw the ball, besides the three picks, pretty well.

Q: The 49ers haven’t turned the ball over in 6 regular season games. How have they done that?

STAFFORD:  That’s what their system is built around: protecting the football, playing good defense, taking what the defense gives you and playing great special teams. That’s what they do. They have a very good running game. Alex is playing really well. Obviously upgraded their receiver position in the offseason.

Q: What happened at the end of your game with the 49ers last year?

STAFFORD:  Didn’t move the ball and didn’t get a chance to score. They did a good job after they scored their touchdown.

It’s kind of tough because there were some instances where we kind of beat ourselves. Had some penalties, had some plays that got down inside the five-yard line then got called for holding here or a chop there. Kind of had two big plays called back and then got inside the redzone and didn’t finish off drives a couple times and that’s what put us in that spot.

I get the feeling that the Niners are going lay a whooping on the Lions. Home game. Prime time. It’s on.

    • Chicago49er says:

BigP, I really would love to see a major whoop A$$$$$ this Sunday to wipe off the funky smile off the lions coach’s face! He was disrespectful last game by making unprofessional commonts before and during the game!!! Go niners

  2. Grumpy Guy says:

It’s nice that all these teams are good enough to “beat themselves” when they play us.

I hope we seriously kick their asses Sunday.

    • Matt says:

Well said HAHAHA +1 maybe some reporter can borrow that line after the game. I think it’s a classic if Cohn or Maiocco are reading.

    • impeachgoodell says:

      Best comment I’ve read.
We never beat anyone, they beat themselves – yeah right.

    • 49erGirl says:

All the teams the 49ers play seem to have this “we beat ourselves” affliction. If only they had a common denominator – things that make you go “hmmmm”.

    • jsand3030 says:

Well, i hope they “beat themselves” pretty good Sun. night..

This is the translation to his answer:

Stafford: obviously you’ve seen that we a playing the Rams and they aren’t really the Greatest Show on Turf anymore. Their lack of offense allowed us to get back in the game.

  4. rocket says:

The next guy who says “we beat ourselves” deserves a beatdown from every media member at the press conference.

    • kemp_j says:

I’m tired of hearing “we beat ourselves ” also, but if you think about the 9ers beat themselves in the NFC Championship last year……

    • exgolfer says:

      Rocket,

I know what you mean, but in this case, I love it. The 49ers probably don’t need any additional motivation, but just in case they do, it’s been served up on a platter. Stafford must be a real dope to say something like that. If that’s how you feel, keep it to yourself.

  5. RamItOn says:

    Does any team -lose- anymore?

  6. Jason Deaver says:

After we destroy the lions this week there will be no room for` we beat ourselves’ anymore.

  7. Truelionsfan30 says:

Lions are gonna beat down the 49ers!!

    • AES* says:

      @True30

What makes you think that you could beat us?
Let’s look at the logistics: Top five.
      1. Your team has not improved much from last season.
      2. Your best RB (J.Best…loved him at Cal) is not ready to play.
      3. Your defense is still one that shows signs of immaturity by committing penalties at the most inopportune times.
      4. Stafford seems to get too rattled after being hit. And he will be hit on Sunday!
      5. Your coaching personnel is simply not on the level of our coaching staff from top to bottom.

You guys should just hope that you get out of here with a modecum of respectability (lol)!

    • ninermd says:

Whoooo whoooo whoooo…. There is NO such thing as a lions fan. Were you wearing paper or plastic two years ago? Ha ha ha haaaaaa.. Heeeere kitty kitty

    • Grumpy Guy says:

Their DBs are naged up too. No doubt that will be the Excuse du Jour when they lay a big kitty turd on our field.

    • Chicago49er says:

Kitty kitty go drink your milk and we will see you in the bay baby!!! Go Niners

  8. I.P. Daily says:

Keep the enthusiasm down. Freddy P. Soft lives there…

  9. 49erGirl says:

Q: “What jumps out at you about the 49ers Defense”
A: “It’s obviously similar group to the one we played last year”

Peanut Gallery- Hey, genius – all 11 starters retured – it’s the SAME group you faced last year that knocked you on your rear for four quarters…only difference is they’re better now than they were 12 months ago.

  10. Luna_49er says:

9ers r bowl bound all the haters can shut up we bringing the 80s back

  11. marine49r says:

gona keep them (offense) on side line plus Lions d-line WILL get tired and frustrated i see us having good returns on kicks. .remmember they have Hot heads, they will do something stupid and show that the head coach can’t himself or his team.

  12. ninermd says:

Q….How did oneniner get banned again?

    A… He beat himself.

  13. marine49r says:

last line left out can’t handle himself or team. oops cough x2

  14. ninermd says:

If anyone gets a chance to watch 49ers total access. Do it. They are reliving the long history between the 9ers and packers. Good stuff!

  15. 23jordan says:

Stafford says they beat themselves. He needs to know our defense just wouldn’t let them have ANYTHING! Our offense wasn’t moving the ball and of our offense can’t move the ball, the opponents offense DAMN sure isn’t gonna move it either! That’s how are defense does it. If we need to keep you to 3, we do that. If we need to shut you down, our defense does that too!

  16. Grumpy Guy says:

It would be nice to get five or six sacks and another dozen hits on Stafford. Might help him to remember next time, just who beat his punk ass.

  17. Crab15 says:

Protecting the football is not a system Stafford! Why wouldn’t any player try to protect the football? Lame comment.

Willis and Cowboy played a solid game vs GB but it seemed noiseless. Anyone else feel that way?
I expect them both to awaken the dead with some thunder Sunday night.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Crab

I felt PW was quiet. I don’t expect his sore throat to last long though.

JS was being double teamed a ton. Freeing up other Niners (see AS/AB). Not too different in my opinion from when a WR gets 2-teamed, freeing up others to do their thing.

      • Crab15 says:

        DS – It’s C15 now. :-)
Good point about the double team on Cowboy.
With 11 studs on D, who can you afford to double?

      • undercenter says:

Is why I am thinking McDonald has a huge year.

  18. domingo says:

Alex is gonna light this fool’s Butt afire!

  19. Ed says:

Yea, after this game the 49ers are gonna be like the bully that pushes your head into the wall and says, “Stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself,” like Nelson Muntz.
