49ers-Giants live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 6 game against the New York Giants. I’ll update this frequently with observations and analysis from the press box.

1:22 The 49ers won the toss and chose to receive the ball.

1:26 Kyle Williams returns the opening kickoff from the back of the end zone to the 49ers’ 15 yard line. Bad decision to run that one out.

1:28 On third and one Alex Smith pitches to Kendall Hunter who runs around the left side for a gain of 15 yards. Remember, the Giants are vulnerable to runs on third down, especially around the outside.

1:33 The 49ers drove it down to the Giants’ 30 yard line and then stalled. On first down Alex Smith chose to not throw to Moss, who was running to the end zone and had a step on the cornerback. On second down Alex Smith did not see a wide open Frank Gore. On third and six, Kaepernick replaced Smith, handed off to Gore, who gained nothing.

1:35 David Akers misses the 43-yard field goal attempt wide right. He been hooking kicks recently.

1:37 On third and two Eli Manning overthrows Hakeem Nicks deep. Culliver was covering Nicks all by himself and Dashon Goldson blitzed. Niners ball at their 15.

1:45 The 49ers drive the ball down to the Giants’ 25 yard line and on third and five Alex Smith gets his pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. David Akers makes a 42-yard field goal. 3-0 49ers.

1:46 That was a 12-play, 61-yard, 5:27 drive. Kyle Williams caught two third-down conversions, and Alex Smith hit Randy Moss for a 20-yard gain.

1:49 The Giants start at their 15 yard line after a holding penalty on the kick return.

1:52 The Giants call their first timeout of the half with 1:02 left in the first quarter. They face third and six from their own 19. They have zero first downs so far.

1:56 The Giants convert. Eli Manning completes an 11-yard pass to Victor Cruz, who was being covered by Carlos Rogers one-on-one.

Alex Smith’s first quarter stats: 8 for 13, 69 yards, 75.2 QB rating.

Frank Gore: 7 carries, 33 yards.
