SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 6 game against the New York Giants. I’ll update this frequently with observations and analysis from the press box.
1:22 The 49ers won the toss and chose to receive the ball.
1:26 Kyle Williams returns the opening kickoff from the back of the end zone to the 49ers’ 15 yard line. Bad decision to run that one out.
1:28 On third and one Alex Smith pitches to Kendall Hunter who runs around the left side for a gain of 15 yards. Remember, the Giants are vulnerable to runs on third down, especially around the outside.
1:33 The 49ers drove it down to the Giants’ 30 yard line and then stalled. On first down Alex Smith chose to not throw to Moss, who was running to the end zone and had a step on the cornerback. On second down Alex Smith did not see a wide open Frank Gore. On third and six, Kaepernick replaced Smith, handed off to Gore, who gained nothing.
1:35 David Akers misses the 43-yard field goal attempt wide right. He been hooking kicks recently.
1:37 On third and two Eli Manning overthrows Hakeem Nicks deep. Culliver was covering Nicks all by himself and Dashon Goldson blitzed. Niners ball at their 15.
1:45 The 49ers drive the ball down to the Giants’ 25 yard line and on third and five Alex Smith gets his pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. David Akers makes a 42-yard field goal. 3-0 49ers.
1:46 That was a 12-play, 61-yard, 5:27 drive. Kyle Williams caught two third-down conversions, and Alex Smith hit Randy Moss for a 20-yard gain.
1:49 The Giants start at their 15 yard line after a holding penalty on the kick return.
1:52 The Giants call their first timeout of the half with 1:02 left in the first quarter. They face third and six from their own 19. They have zero first downs so far.
1:56 The Giants convert. Eli Manning completes an 11-yard pass to Victor Cruz, who was being covered by Carlos Rogers one-on-one.
Alex Smith’s first quarter stats: 8 for 13, 69 yards, 75.2 QB rating.
Frank Gore: 7 carries, 33 yards.

Game time! Niners 27, Giants 13.
Manningham!!
How was that not a late hit?
He was still barely inbounds.
Everything underneath was open there.
way to feel the pressure AS
nice run gore.
Yeah Frank
CK7
backfired.
Now I am all for Colin Kaepernick, but I thought Alex Smith had a nice thing going. I don’t understand mixing things up to just hand to gore.
I wouldn’t trust Smith on 3rd and long either. He missed Moss on 1st. Blew the 2nd down throw to CK.
It was third and 5.
My mistake, I over reacted
At least you are consistent!
Kyle Williams, Greg Roman, and Akers kicker are all working together to give NY great field position. Are you serious? Pulling Simth out for that play call?
What is up with Akers..
Kickers aren’t always perfect. Akers is no Joe Nedney.
Good decision by Smith to hit Williams.
Not a smith lover by any means, but these throws make me question even more the decision to put kaepernick in on 3rd and 5
There’s been a Moss Sighting…
Moss landing!!!
Doing good on 3rd downs!
I had to say that!
jinx, lol
two tipped balls so far, like that last one.
You better believe they’ll let CK carry it one of these times.
too many field goal attempts!!
Nicks is open streaking down the sideline. I expect to see Manning pull the trigger again on that pass.
Nicks is limping…
Yeah, i’d be real suprised if nicks has any impact on this game
Notice I didn’t say “to Nicks.” I said’” I expect to see Manning pull the trigger again on that pass.” For a cut and paste artist, I can’t believe you missed that.
That pass is there. The receiver is who ever you want it to be. The go route is open is what I was saying.
And Culliver was the CB. And why he is the #3 still.
sideline go route is a staple of most offenses. shouldn’t be a surprise if we see it.
The surprise is that it is open. Cut and paste that.
cut and paste? wtf are you going on about?
I want to see if we can get a real pass rush on. So far, I like AS’s calmness. He looks more confident as the O-line is giving him time.
Return coverage is still an issue. This time, they were saved by the refs
Special Teams still a liability in SF. You can’t keep hoping for a flag. I hope they address the issue soon.
Defense looking good early should be well resred
rested
ooh. manning faceplanted.
Mr. Brooks will get a Fed-Ex letter delivered to his locker for that.
I luv this team. We are unstoppable!
for field goals :)
We still have red zone issues
We have OC play calling issues and special teams issues.
Bad playcall or not we stil have to make a play
J Smith is being held on almost every play
Tennesse Detroit and Cleveland killed my picks this week. UGH!
Bowman just beasted Bradshaw.
BigP – Thanks for the link last night. :-) Good beer choice bro.
Crabs,
No worries, we’ll have to meet for a pint one of these days.
BowMAN!!
giants. just forget your run game. it’s not going to happen.
They’re trying ‘establish’ the run :)
Well, THAT looked like the old Alex.
manningham was wide open!!!
INT…..Damnit, why are we throwing to Walker?
I love it when the Precious reveals its real self…
PICK!!!
Smith just ‘punted’ the ball :)
Haha I thought the same thing.
That was a bad decision and a bad throw, Manningham was wide open in the middle.
bad pass there, alex. way to give a gulp of oxygen to the drowning haters :)
He gave a gulp of oxygen to the Giants, which is what I am worried about.
Smith is telegraphing his throws
That’s how you throw a deep pass
Let’s get a turnover here
Wow Eli is throwing darts again.
Manning just put on a QB clinic on that series
Time for somebody on the Niners to take V.C.’s block off.
BigP – Are you calling for a bounty on Cruz? Lol
Ummmm, I like to think of it as a “Non-contractual, semi-performance based, player funded, award structure for ridiculiciousness on the gridiron.”
Worst part about the int. I dont believe Smith will throw the ball downfield anymore
Unfortunately, i think you may be right. I hope we don’t see check downs from now on
Yeah I agree. I hope this doesn’t deter him from trying to expand his skills.
Come on Roman, its time for a momentum changing drive
We need to get some hits on Manning. Once he gets in that zone he’s really tough to stop. He can get a bit erratic if we bring it play in and play out, and we’re going to need a turnover or two in this game.
That was a Smith generated sack
He had a receiver open, but didn’t see him
What’s new nick, this ain’t buffalo!
We’ll get the ball back this half. If the offense lays an egg, then this game will get ugly.
Hmm.. looks like after missing a FG and not scoring a TD on either drive the energy has been sucked right out of us.
Theres the scaredness of the int. throw the ball
yep
The secondary is looking pretty sorry right now.
Defense needs a stop!!
Manning is on fire.
he is starting to get into a groove and its bettin’ scary.
need a stop…NOW!
*getting
Bad challenge!
Nice play on D
