49ers-Giants live blog: Fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — Here is the live blog for the fourth quarter of the 49ers Week G game against the Giants.

3:46 On third and 11, Smith scrambles around the right for a 1-yard gain, and the 49ers punt. The 49ers don’t seem to have the offensive firepower to get back in this game. Giants ball at their 17 yard line, up 23-3.

3:53 Bradshaw gains 23 yards on a second-down run to move the ball to midfield, but the Giants’ drive stalls and they punt. 49ers’ ball at their 11 yard line with 11:16 left in the game. Alex Smith is still in the game.

3:59 Alex Smith gets sacked for a 11-yard loss on third and six. 49ers fans are streaming out of the stadium. Andy Lee punts. 9 minutes left.

4:07 The Giants have gained 66 yards on 7 rushes and zero passes this drive. Second and 7 on the SF 20 yard line.

4:19 Tynes makes a 32-yard field goal. 26-3 Giants. I’m going down to the field. Back at you shortly with grades and more.

Seems to be a bad day to be a 49er fan…

    • ribico says:

But a great day to be a hater. They are having the time of their lives.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

like the Smithers were having the time of their lives last week against a horrible Bills defense?

      • Houston 9er says:

It’s a bad day for all 9er fans. No one wants to say I told you so in a loss. No one wants to have to admit all the excuses were dead wrong.

      • ribico says:

        >>like the Smithers were having the time of their lives last week against a horrible Bills defense?

ummm…. that’s what fans “do” when their team wins big. Would you understand that?

      • ninermd says:

Great day to be a superhero right rib? Consistency it’s a smith thaaaang!

Not that I’m wishing bad on smith folks, but this idiot decided to start some $hit yesterday about smith being consistent. Which he obviously isnt. So for the name of talking sh*t!!! Ha ha haaaa. Ribico take the cape off and keep it real stupid!

      • ninermd says:

Real fans know the strengths and weaknesses o their team. Smith fans blame everything else.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, AS will be back and will play well. Joining the turncoats?!!!

      • Houston 9er says:

Hof, I actually agree with you. Alex will play better. Having said that, the 9ers will not reach a Superbowl with Alex Smith as the starter. It just won’t happen.

      • ribico says:

md, tell the board what strength you saw on the team today?

      • ninermd says:

Hoff…. I’m keeping it real. This was a big game for smith to step up and deliver. Especially with the defense having an off day. He is still inconsistent. That’s not good.

Ribico if I saw ANY part of the team that played pretty well today I’d have to say the O-line did a decent job today.

      • ribico says:

md, they gave up 6 sacks – 4 for AS, 2 for CK to Giants DL that hadn’t been pressuring the QB this year. 4.7 rushing avg pretty good, for only 80 yards on the ground? WTH.

Grading on a curve, I do give them the high score – a D.

  2. MontanaMan16 says:

The wildkrap is killing every drive we get momentum on!

    • BigP says:

You are so right, it’s almost like the three interceptions didn’t even happen.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Big P,

Alex didn’t throw 3 picks, his broken middle finger did. Did you see that 1st pick???

    • DS94everXev says:

This idiocy of putting CK in then expecting AS to cone in on 3rd and long is stupid.

The coaching/playcalling/personnel today has been poor. Coaches aren’t helping putting our players in position to do well.

      • BigP says:

        DS,
It’s like you always say, if you don’t have turnovers you will most likely win the game.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

        DS,

How well do you think Alex has played today?

      • undercenter says:

It was a total team lack of performance, we were outcoached, outplayed, in every aspect of the game.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, yes it was. If we get to pick, I’d rather lose this one and win against Seattle this Thursday. It seems to me, similar to the Vikes game, the team has let downs. We knew they wouldn’t win them all!!

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
This wasn’t a let down, it was a melt down.

      • ribico says:

A complete embarassment. From Harbaugh to AS down to the waterboy. The worst loss of the Harbaugh era.

Or maybe the Giants are just that much better than us. Today they sure were.

      • DS94everXev says:

        under

        Correct.

Point to a single player on the team who played well. Not a one. If some only blame AS for today, they suck.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, like I said on another comment, it wasn’t one and done!

If they stick to their core plays that were working in the 1st qtr they win this game. 9ers got the season win last year now they get it. Now wee beat them in the playoffs. Enough with the gimmick plays, they don’t need them. This team is still the best in the NFC and they will get their mojo back against Seattle which is a more important game anyway.

      • AES* says:

        @DS

For once I agree with you. 3rd and longs definitely don’t play to AS’ strenghts.

But if you need to blame CK, I guess he’s as good as excuse as any today (lol).

I must say that I find it ironically hypocritical that you made a huge stink over CK throwing a long incomplete pass to R.Moss against the Jets (in a win), but are somewhat laid-back on AS’ 3 INT’s.
It is what it is, huh DS?

Please no excuses this week. The Giants took us to the wood-shed plain and simple.

It’s time to take on Mike Tomlin’ mantra: “We are not in the business of making excuses.”

  3. Big Niner says:

    lets go D

  4. Chris says:

I don’t think it’s time to bully any fan or Smith Lover. I blame coaching and the bait adn switch idea that pulling Smith for Kaepernick is going to work long term in the NFL.
I am sure Steve Young and Trent Dilfer will cover this in their analysis. I don’t like Smith and I don’t like how he was pushed in all our faces when he had his 3rd good game in 8 years, but I also am not a fan of piling it on.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

That’s your deal. The rest of us have had to deal with this promise of a quarterback for about 8 years now.

  5. Houston 9er says:

Where is the Triumvirate of Alexcuses? Is this another game they missed because they were out of town? Interest how they show up during the week to defend Smith but seem to miss all the games.

  6. Sputnik says:

    @ Ribico
Wow Alex is play like garbage and you talk about haters , you must be his mom ? Or wife ? Dad ? There is no argument for Alex’s play it gets a F- we lost this gam because of him ………………………………….

    • ribico says:

You are not getting any defense of Smith from me for this game. I’ll let the apes beat their chests until thursday.

I will give big props to the Giants. They kicked our @sses.

  7. Lee says:

It seems like he’s being pressured, he isn’t trusting his throws, and potentially his finger is giving a heck of a time. I believe it’s his middle finger on the throwing hand. A lot of the gripping strength comes from that finger. I know he’s played bad games in the past, but I wanna wait to see how he holds up after this game and how/if he bounces back. I have faith! GO NINERS!!!

  8. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Alex Smith takes a sack better than any QB I know. Just roll right into the guys arms. Alex is Elite!!! NOT!

  9. niner4life11 says:

    sucks!!!

  10. ninermd says:

No pass rush! No special teams! No qb! Time to start some soul searching. This measuring stick game is speaking volumes. Our weaknesses were exposed today.

    • ribico says:

Giants flat out steamrolled us. That better be obvious no matter where you stand on AS. They came in and took care of business.

      • ninermd says:

They did, and it sucked. Again. Our weak links this season so far is NO pass rush! No special teams! No consistent Qb play. These 3 things have go to get better.

  11. Txtree49er says:

Expect a lot of 23jordan this week

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Expect a lot of 23 Jordan and the truth right NOW!!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

You sir are a turncoat – always have been! You’ve enjoyed this loss. Respect? I guess you earned it from your followers today…

    • Crab15 says:

Everyone should be ripping Alex not just 23J. I call it like I see it. Alex has been pretty good but he sucks today.

      • undercenter says:

I agree he sucked today, but from my eyes I saw the whole team suck everywhere. We were outcoached and outplayed no doubt about it.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Crabs,

No team in this league fears Alex Smith. He is a below average game manager. He is a system fit for a good offense. JH did all he could do with Smith. He can’t teach Smith the deep ball because Smith foes not have the arm strength. That’s why when the Biners need to go downfield, they put Kap in the game. It’s week 6. Smith is hurt and his poor finger hurts too. Sit his azz down and play Kap on Thursday.

      • Crab15 says:

under – I agree others sucked as well.

      • txtree49er says:

Not defending Alex Smith. I am ripping a so called fan. Just wait and see what he post during the week. Anyone can see we were outplayed in all 3 phases of the game.

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

        Textree,

You dont ave to wait. I’m posting it now. I told you clowns that alex smith would crap all over this field and he did. 3 interceptions and 2 tipped balls for drive killers early in the game. We don’t ave a startingbQB whether you like it or not.

      • Txtree49er says:

What part of we lost on all three levels do you not understand! The Offense sucked today, yes, dut so did special teams, and the defense. Try and get that through you head.

  12. Sputnik says:

    @lee
Then Alex should not be in the game if he is not healthy…….. Don’t blame the finger it makes you look bad .

  13. Crab15 says:

The Giants have no fear of us. This sucks

  14. Lee says:

I thought he injured it in the middle of the game. In my experience it was always easier to continue to play injured than it was a week later when swelling and fluid builds up and reduces flexibility and motion. I hope he holds up. However, an injured finger shouldn’t be an excuse for poor decision making. I just want us to win!

  15. Stan says:

    A 12-4 pace..about right.

  16. DS94everXev says:

Those hating AS, save some for our run D today.

2 straight runs when we know it’s coming. But Nahhh. AS is the only reason.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Add about 10 more.

    • Crab15 says:

DS – How can you not hate the way AS played today? Lol

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, AS has played well this year, his record in 2 years is 17 – 7. It was well documented he had a bad digit but didn’t use it as an excuse. Maybe they should have started CK?!! Time to move on to Thursday…

Remember, the 9ers won against NYG during the season last year and lost in the playoffs. Maybe the opposite this year!?? Keep the faith…

      • Crab15 says:

Hofe – I can live with the picks, but not the 4th and 15 play when Alex threw a 5 yard pass and the 3rd and 10 play in 4th qtr when he gave up by running out of bounds.
You know those two plays were pathetic.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

He had MC and should have thrown it I agree. TAikman said on the short throw that nothing was open so he took the short pass. Not what we want to hear but the truth.

This team will rebound against Seattle. Not to worry.

    • ninermd says:

3 points!!! Shut up and go away now!

  17. Stan says:

On the other hand-those names Harbaugh would be taking? Not worried.

  18. 9er1 says:

Alex Smith — Mr. Safe, but can’t make a play to save his a$$. He’s fine when he’s sitting in his little safe zone, but make him uncomfortable with a solid defense like the Giants and he goes right back to the BAD ALEX we all know so well. Time for a QB change!! Enough of this love affair with the guy!!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

He was doing great in the first two series. WHY did they feel the need to go to CK which was the series killer? Take a look…

  19. Chicago49er says:

This was a sorry game! 3 INTs, two miss field goals and we can not stop the run game!!! What a horrible feeling

  20. Scooter_McG says:

Looks like the 49ers have now quit on this game.

  21. Sputnik says:

Like I said last year giants are the better team , I said to my best friend the giants are in the niners heads , no doubt who the better team is the G- men well done , no excuses here great game plan , I tip my hat to you .

  22. Redngold says:

Darn. Please throw the white flag and regroup next week. It’s just humiliating!

  23. MontanaMan16 says:

I cant wait for this weeks grades! It was a bad game for all…but its Smiths fault dontcha know!

  24. Sputnik says:

    @Ds
With all do respect just stop , just stop

    • DS94everXev says:

      Sputnik

Shut up. Tell me who was good? Till then, put a sock in it.

      Thank you.

    • ninermd says:

Lol Sputnik…. Well said. But this idiot will try and spin the fact that Alex smith lost today and got the team a whopping 3 points. Good luck trying to make sense to this idiot!

  25. domingo says:

We are going to learn a lot about Harbaugh during this short week coming of such a discouraging loss.

  26. MontanaMan16 says:

At least I got the Seachicken game right!

  27. Redngold says:

Niners got beaten all 3 phases. It seemed they lost the game much earlier. Rogers dropped an easy interception that could change the game momentum…but he still smiling?

    • angusinCanada says:

That was the turning point in the game. They just deflated after that, on both sides of the ball, big time.

  28. Houston 9er says:

What are you talking about? It’s not Smith’s fault. The WRs didn’t try hard enough. His passes were perfect. The line didn’t block so he didn’t have much time. The play calls were terrible. He executed everything perfectly. Roman intended for Smith to throw a 5 yard pass on 4th & 15. 3 Int’s were the fault of the fans for not cheering loud enough. Alex Smith played a Hall of Fame worthy game. He’s the man.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Houston,

This isn’t a one and done! We have the SAME record as the NYG! Last year the 9ers won during the season and AS/Team had a good game. This year they lose…now on to Thursday and Seattle!

      The 9ers will handle Seattle!!

    • Adhesive_Bandage says:

      I love sarcasm.

    • DaNiners says:

Is this guy serious? Is he watching the same game everyone else just watched? Smith was terrible today. Those passes were atrocious. He didn’t have much pressure early on. That bomb? Are you kidding?

He is not a franchise QB. The problem is that most teams are not our equal, but one is and they have a franchise QB named Eli Manning. If Smith does not lead us to SB this year, Kaepernick will be our starter next season.

  29. Classic Niner says:

    This is an embarrassment.

  30. tkamB says:

Bad game all around. Had a chance to go into half time at 10-6, but we miss the field goal. Come out of half time and allow a huge kick off return that turned into a td. Alex Smith had his worst game in a couple of years obviously but hard to find any positive to take out of this game. I like the Kaep plays but Roman needs to learn to pick his spots, right after a 55 yard pass to Moss is not the right time when we could have gotten into a rhythm and gotten some momentum. I think the worse part of this is losing Staley to a concussion since we have the quick turnaround and play Seattle on Thursday.

  31. ribico says:

Where’s that Giants fan who was posting here earlier? I’d like to see some gloating other than that of the haters.

    • Houston 9er says:

How did Alex Smith play today Ribs?

      • ribico says:

Like $hit. Pretty obvious. As many picks as the previous how many games?

So you’d bench your 17-6 starter? Brilliant.

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

he is who I said he was. Write this word down. CONSISTENCY. You will never get that from Alex Smith.

Guess he won’t be the # 1 ranked QB after this showing. I’ve got news. I told all the Smithers that he never was. If you think that was bad, watch what Seattle does to that QB rating!

      • ribico says:

Pulling for Seattle now, Jordo. Nice.

      • Houston 9er says:

Ribs, I’ve been very consistent on the QB spot. Smith should be the starter for the rest of the year. CK is too green. If this were a rebuilding year, I’d say give CK a chance. Notwithstanding, the performance today in every phase, the 9ers are good enough to win the Superbowl in every position except QB. Alex is good enough to win games but CK is an unknown quantity. I don’t think the 9ers are good enough to overcome Alex’s limitations to actually win a Superbowl but he gives the team a better chance than CK. I’ve never said anything different.

      • ribico says:

        >>the 9ers are good enough to win the Superbowl in every position except QB.

They looked a few positions lacking in addition to QB today. Maybe we are just not a good enough team to beat the Giants?

      • Jack Hammer says:

“Maybe we are just not a good enough team to beat the Giants?”

Certainly not at this point in the season. The blueprint to beating this team is out there, and they finally met a good team for a change.

      • Houston 9er says:

Well Ribs, I know big words are a problem for you but when I wrote “notwithstanding the performance today” I meant that you have to look past todays performance to realize the 9ers have a Superbowl worthy roster everywhere except QB. I’ve never said Smith should be benched. I never suggested he should be benched. For you to sarcastically call me brilliant because I supposedly called for Smith to be benched is totally dishonest on your part. But then again Ive come to expect that type of crap from you.

      • ribico says:

Hous, why do we have to overlook todays performance? Everyone on the team gets a mulligan except for AS? I’m starting to think there are many aspects on this team that are overrated, pass defense being right up there. Don’t even talk about special teams. They are absolutely NOT championship-caliber as they exist right now.

        >>I supposedly called for Smith to be benched

Then this little supposition was in sarcasm?

        >>Will Alex start or will CK start on Thursday?

      • Houston 9er says:

You sound just like the Obama camp. The embassy attack was a result of a youtube video. Since you apparently can’t read, then listen to me. I have NEVER called for Alex Smith to be benched. Perhaps you can get Susan Rice to go on the Sunday shows to tell another lie.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

They beat the NYG’s last year during the season without the interruption of platooning QB’s. How soon we forget!! Again, way too gimmicky when they didn’t need it especially in the 1st two series when they were moving the ball. Go back to the earlier plan and they win.

      • ribico says:

Houston, go take that commentary to the Freepers board. We are talking Niners here.

Well, who is going to answer your question/thinly disguised plea?

        >>Will Alex start or will CK start on Thursday?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Smith’s 3 picks led to 13 points. The D did a good job of holding them to FG’s on 2 when they started inside FG range. The special teams set up the other with the long kick return.

Both losses so far have one thing in common, throwing too much early on and not establishing the run. Putting the game on Smith early is a mistake and does not play to the strength of this team, running and play action.

      • Houston 9er says:

Ribs, I’ve never mistaken you for a Mensa candidate but I also didn’t think you rode the short bus. There is no alternate universe where asking the QB question amounts to calling for the starter to be benched. Looks like your closer to the short bus end of the spectrum than I thought.

      • ribico says:

Hous, in what universe does that question have ANY validity? Outside of the one where the one asking has an agenda to bench the starter? Or create some bogus QB controversy. You are just too transparent dude, you aren’t that complicated.

In case you didn’t notice, CK did nothing to burnish his starting credentials today.

      • Houston 9er says:

Well Short Bus, I asked the question because it came up in several posts earlier in this blog. If you don’t want a qb controversy to rattle your idol then perhaps you need to tell JH to stop pulling Smith out of the game down in the red zone or several other times in the game. I actually disagree with the CK strategy and think Smith needs to play the entire game. I have never said otherwise no matter how much you try to Obama the situation.

    • La-La Land says:

Ribico…is this 1936? If we recognize that our team does NOT have an Eli Manning-elite-type QB, why are we haters? Then shouldn’t every “fan” who loaded up on Kyle Williams and his fumbles also be called “haters”? Methinks we have some very self-entitled and very spoiled fans who attach themselves to one player and anyone who disagrees is a “hater”. Alex is not a HOF QB and that, like it or not, is our birthright in the Bay Area. Perhaps, you should consider Barstow.

      • ribico says:

        >>like it or not, is our birthright in the Bay Area

Perhaps you should consider living in 1984.

      • DaNiners says:

Couldn’t agree more. This team remains a QB away from making SB. That said, this D is not the same as last year. Very inconsistent pass rush.

    • BigBlue4eva says:

Well guys time to eat up a BIG SLICE of humble pie…we did win da Super Bowl last year thats what alot of people are quick to forget….I’m not gonna gloat but its pretty cut and dry that AS is
the problem…Elite QB list ELI BRADY ROTHLISBERG thats 7
rings over the last 11 years good luck finding a new QB

alex smith is not an ELI-te QB

      GO BIG BLUE!

      • ribico says:

Big Blue, you are piker when it comes to gloating compared to AS-hating niner “fans”. At least we only have to put up with you for one game. It’s an entire season with those other guys.

Congrats on the win, Big Blue made Red look little today.

      • AES* says:

Kudos Big Blue. A dominating win for your boys in blue. No excuses from me.

But this is a marathon not a sprint to the SB. I have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll see each other again.
I would like nothing better then to play you guys again in the championship game.
If you guys can beat us three straight games, you have our number.

But until then, nice win bud.

  32. niner4life11 says:

here is to hoping the cards and seahawks also lose……

  33. Sputnik says:

Joe buck and Troy said the team that turns the ball over will lose , guess who turns it over first yep Alex and who turned it over the second time yep Alex and the third time Alex so yeah this game is on him ………..

  34. undercenter says:

This was a bad game. Of course Smith will get the blame, as well as he should he had a bad game. The whole team sucked period, every aspect of it. For those who like to hate on AS and thinks this was As fault, will never know how to fix the problem. We have many problems and lots are on defense, where was the pass rush, Culliver had a terriable game, the secondary didnt play well. Offensive line wasnt strong, AS most certainly had a bad day.

I havnt been on board with what I now call the kap krap and after today I wish they would start a QB and let that QB play the whole game. This alternating QBs sucks even when it goes good. I dont care if its AS or Kap just play one of them.

    • philly9er says:

      +1

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, good read. The NYG OL and DL did a better job. On the long pass to MM, ADavis man was in AS face with his arm up and impeded the pass. The blamers wish to ignore this fact – you win at the line of scrimmage. I’m not worried because I know they will be back. It’s one game. SB teams lose games during the season just ask GB who was the toast of the NFL last year and was one and done.

The 9ers will win on Thursday…

  35. Jack Hammer says:

Well the Giants are a little better than the Jets and Bills aren’t they?

  36. BigP says:

Grant’s post game grades blog will be entertaining for sure. “Grant, I disagree with your grade for Smith. Giving him a F is unfair as his finger was obviously……” Jordan will join the fray with a can of gas and a match and hijinks will ensue. Rinse and repeat for the entire week. Meanwhile the Seahawks beat the Patriots and the Cardinals came back to send their game into overtime.

  37. Scooter_McG says:

After the way this game has gone, Thursday’s game against the Seahawks is looking dicey. Best D we’ll have come up against all season. Will the 49ers offence rebound?

  38. ninermd says:

Punked!!! In every way today. Wow! They looked aweful on the field today.

  39. Neal says:

Looks like Greg Roman mentor is Jimmy Raye. (( YAHOO ))

    • Hoferfan67 says:

GR is either run happy or gimmich happy – would be great to stick to core plays!

      • Msclemons67 says:

Umm – when Roman is run happy the 49ers win. Both games this year when he went pass happy early the 49ers lost.

This is a running team. Doesn’t have the tools to be a pass first team. This team needs play action to be effective passing the ball.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, they can be a passing team but they need to get the run game going first before play action works. This is the worse loss the NYG have given the 9ers in two years. I believe they are looking ahead to Thursday which is a more important game.

  40. Crab15 says:

Why is Tuck in game with 2 min left. Coughlin’s trying to really stick it to us.

  41. MontanaMan16 says:

I think our game plan was meant to be played with the lead! They should scrapped all that WildKrap stuff when we were down!

  42. 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

When a QB tests free agency and does not get a sniff from any team in the entire NFL, that means something. 31 other general managers said we don’t need Alex Smith! That should tell you something. When all you had to do was offer Smith a 3 year 24 million dollar deal and he is yours, and you don’t, that should tell you something. When your head coach and offensive coordinators are wearing hoodies and chasing Peyton Manning in the middle of the night to replace Alex Smith, that should tell you something. keep ignoring the signs Niner fans. I won’t!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Enjoy your day, 9ers will win and spoil your Thursday!!! Stay tuned…

    • Crab15 says:

23J – Miami was sniffing around.

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

Miami was yanking Smiths chain. He’s no better than Matt Moore. As it turns out, he’s no better than Tannehill.

      • Crab15 says:

23J – The Tannehill comment made my ribs hurt.
CK looked poor the last 2 minutes. Lucky no pick six. I was calling for Tolzien earlier. Lol

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

Crabs remember, we were minus 2 offensive linemen. They will be back when JH decides to start Kap. Just wait and see.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah, let’s take out the top QB who had a bad day like the rest of the team and replace him with an unknown that had one good game during the preseason. Nothing against CK, but let’s keep it real.

    • Neal says:

      Jordan,

Smith really sucked, we saw what a elite QB is and his name is not Smith ,but we sucked all together like rotten eggs, it rots from the top and we showed it today. The Niners knew exactly what they were doing when they offered Smith that lame one year contract of 3 years

  43. DS94everXev says:

Seattle beat NE in Seattle. Another east coast team not thinking they are tough. Like I said.

  44. Chicago49er says:

Buffalo just got the INT in the OT!!! YES go bills beat the red birds

  45. Shoupbj says:

I see this game as an affirmation of where the NFL is moving.

The niners overall have the better team but but dont have the playmakers the giants do. In this scenario the better team will win if the the breaks go thier way but if they get behind they are not explosive enough to come back and win. They have to turn every game into a slugfest which means they will lose games they shouldnt.
This is proof positive that the niners offense is greatly overrated and they still struggle against good defenses. They have faced 2 good defenses Minn and NY and have failed to put up points on the board.

    • La-La Land says:

Keyword = playmakers. You nailed it. Maybe our coach can send another angry letter instead of preparing for the actual opponent.

  46. Neal says:

We can easily lose against the Hawks, we better lick our wounds and play with a better effort, game plan then today.

  47. Hoferfan67 says:

Now on to the SF Giants!! Woo Hoo!!! I don’t think I’ll be hoping for the starting pitcher to do poorly…

  48. tkamB says:

At least the Bills beat the Cardinals!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

That doesn’t count because AZ has a terrible defense…oh wait!

      • tkamB says:

Remember how many of these supposed fans wanted Kolb? 14-26 128 yds 1 td 1 int against that defense.

    • Msclemons67 says:

The Rams and Cardinals being dumpster fires helps make this day a little less painful.

Seeing Russel Wilson light up the Pats didn’t make me happy though.

      • tkamB says:

Pats secondary is pretty bad though, I’m way more worried about that Seahawks defense even if they allowed Brady to put up some numbers.

  49. Adhesive_Bandage says:

Hey BS, what’s your excuse for your loverboy today?.

    • tkamB says:

Hey I’d just like to say congratulations on Alex Smith having a bad game today, I’m sure you’re on cloud nine having watched your team lose.

  50. Sputnik says:

    @Big P
Agin if Alex’s finger was a issue then he should not have played to day , don’t make excuses .

    • BigP says:

      Sputnik,
I didn’t make an excuse, Smith’s play was horrible today. I made a joke about the back and forth that will dominate the blog this week.

  51. Crab15 says:

    What’s up with Akers?

  52. 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

Alex didn’t play well today. However, he played with a broken finger. Hes a tough son of a gun. He’s just not a very good quarterback. The question is, with this broken finger, do you start him on Thursday. Those 3 picks didn’t look good.
Jimmy Johnson said today what I’m trying to feed the Smithers. Jim Harbaugh is slowly going to phase Smith out of this offense and give Kap the reigns THIS YEAR. Alex Smith can’t take this team to the super bowl. His skills are supremely limited. His arm is not strong enough. This is a QB driven league. In Alex Smith, we don’t have a starting QB.

  53. ribico says:

Where’s Sean in Canada? We have heartbreaking 34-0 blowout wins (you called that one) and now jubilant 26-3 losses. Is this a f-ed-up schizo fanbase or what?

  54. Jacktoo says:

Hate that we lost. Thursdays game is more important.

  55. Hoferfan67 says:

Totally agree with TBradshaw, you can’t keep breaking the continuity bringing in CK when the 9ers are moving the ball. There is no way you can get consistency that way. AS can get it done – 17 -7 in two years. GR and the 9ers were moving the ball then they bring in CK the first two series and killed the momentum. How can receivers, etc, get in sync with this play calling??
    TBradshaw is point on!

Grant you need to ask these questions please.

    • BigP says:

      Hofer,
I was watching the same show, what did the other analysts say about Smith?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

JJohnson said you don’t switch QB’s unless their plan is to replace AS. They all said AS didn’t get it done and he didn’t. TBradshaw said AS is leading the league in passing and it’s breaking the continuity by replacing him with CK. TB thinks they should throw deep more…

      • BigP says:

They said he wasn’t a championship caliber QB and that Eli Manning was.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, how many are? AS doesn’t have his experience and I’d say EManning is playing his best right now of all QB’s in the NFL. That’s not an embarrassment not to be as good as the best.

      • BigP says:

I’m just repeating what they said because you left that tidbit out.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, TBradshaw knows quarterbacking and he said platooning them is not good. That was the main point. Not a slam on CK more so on the coaches. They sometimes over think a good thing…

    • undercenter says:

Agree 100 percent. Dont like it.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Interesting they were moving the ball until CK came in the 1st two series. That would affect any QB’s confidence!

    • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

      Hofer,

You’re a liar. Alex Smith killed momentum in those 1st 2 series by allowing a defensive lineman to tip a short pass to an open receiver on 3rd down. Blame the backup if you want. Which team are you rooting for when Smith leaves? Alex Smith is no big game quarterback. Sorry sir. Look in the mirror. Do you see that hypocrite? You’re killing me.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Name calling?? SMH

      • ribico says:

Whenever Alex leaves, no doubt Hofer will be rooting for the same team you are rooting against while AS is here.

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

No different than you sir. You are a liar and a hypocrite. You label me all you want. That is exactly what I’m doing to you. You even lied about what JJ said on the post game show. I know you’re sick, my team lost too. However, they lost with a QB that shouldn’t be here. ALEX SMITH! can you see the writing on the. Wall yet?

    • Chicago49er says:

Guys, come on! I am a niner fan therefore a Alex fan as long as he is our QB however Eli is a completely different QB with two super bowl rings. I do not like Eli however he is on a different level! We can beat the dead horse in so many different ways but Eli is the best QB in the league right now (dont forget he won the super bowl!). Lets hope for a different game from the NIners on Thursday. GO ALex and the Niners

  56. 9er,dodger,laker4life says:

Qb play, run game, playcalling, run defense, pass defense and special teams in that order are to blame for this loss!! So no excuses for anybody including Alex! Roman killed some momentum with the wildkap at the wrong times!!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      +1000

    • BigP says:

I would argue that the interceptions killed momentum more then anything CK did.

      • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

        +100,000

      • Hoferfan67 says:

BigP, it’s not CK it’s the whole continutity. Either play one or the other. If they don’t trust AS, then go with CK.

I answered your question above answer this, what QB platooning has *ever* worked this way in the NFL??

      • undercenter says:

For me it has nothing to do with performance of CK tho he played as poor as everyone else, alternating QBs is not a workable solution. This game was in our hand in the first quarter putting in CK at that time seem to change the entire demeanor of the offense. Start and play one or the other and stop alternating.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Exactly my thoughts Under!

      • DS94everXev says:

When the game started, AS and the offense were clicking. Then when CK was put in 2 things happened:

        1. He did nothing that AS couldn’t have done. Good or bad. So why the switch other than to say we did it?

        2. Our momentum ended. The first 2 drives, CK went in and did nothing. Again, AS could have done that. Or maybe he manages to score a TD or two then.

And why the hell was CK in there right after the RM 55 yard pass play? That play pissed me off more than any other. He took an 11 yard sack on a down he had plenty of time to get rid of the ball.

Sorry all you CK will replace AS folks. He had more snaps this game than any other, and he didn’t look any better. In fact we managed to look worse. What was he doing faking the hand-off to FG who had stepped up to help block/go out for a pass? It’s like he did it off of habit because EVERY play he does that fake option thing. He got sacked just like AS, so much for the athletic part avoiding sacks theory that many hang their hats on. He should have been Int, had the Giants defender learn to catch the ball. AS should have thrown it towards that guy more often.

If it sounds like I’m being hard on CK, sorry. But the coaches deserve more than 50% of the blame for CK looking so bad. They put him in those situations. It seemed to confuse our own players more than the Giants defense. And that is why teams don’t do the QB switch thing. I am fine with the idea of having CK on the field, but not at the expense of taking AS out if more than a couple times a game.

    • AES* says:

      9er, dodger,

I repsectfully disagree. Our offense never seemed to have any momentum in this game. Aside fro a couple of nice passes from AS on the first series, no rhythm was established by the offense.

Yes, the playcalling was questionable, but so was AS’ decisions on a his INT’s.
While AS showed that he could make the long pass, it seems obvious to these eyes that he would rather stay away from throwing deep.

CK did not make a difference in today’s game and niether did our running game.

Our defense was on the field much too long. Mistakes on offense and ST’ made for a long day for our D.
I for one give our D high marks for not letting the G-men hang a 40 spot on us.

We may have forgot that the Giants are the reigning world champs are were here to prove that last years championship game was no fluke. They just made a statement that the SB will have to go through them. We will see them again in the playoffs no doubt.

The entire team/coaching staff and 49er Faithful needs to shake this one off.
Now, it’s all about knocking that annoying smirk off of P.Carroll’ grill on Thursday night.

      • BigBlue4eva says:

I will respect you 4 eva for that comment my props to ya…you tell it like it is

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        BigBlue,

The 9ers won in the regular season last year again the NYG and lost in the playoffs. Not the end of the world. We’ll see you again and the 9ers will win…

  57. ribico says:

Giants win. Jets win. Even Buffalo (wtf?) wins. It’s nice to be a Niner fan in NY… not!

    • philly9er says:

Lol rib atleast the Eagles found a way to lose today so I don’t have to hear my friends.

      • ribico says:

Holy crap, I didn’t see that. I thought that game ws over at halftime. WTG Eagles losing! Lots of Eagles fans at my office so I don’t have to hang my head too far.

    • ribico says:

At least Yankees are down 2-0. Ha!

  58. Crab15 says:

I gave the 6.5 points and was going to surprise my wife with a special gift. Looks like an index-card love note will have to do.

  59. Mike says:

If the team plays well, Smith will play well. If the team plays badly, Smith plays badly. He isn’t an elite QB and never will be. Montana and Young were elite QB’s and we are spoiled fans wanting what Smith never will be. He does his best and we will have to be satisfied with that.

  60. dc9er says:

i’m not an alex smith fan, but this was a team beat down. we played like crap today, i hope we can get it fixed cause we were not in this game at all after the first quarter.

    • Shoupbj says:

I dont know if I agree with that entirely. Our Defense held the NY offense to 26 points in spite of the offense not being able to get them off the field and constantly giving up the football so new york only had to go 30 yrds to score.

The offense has to prove they can do something against a defense that is not a complete turnstile at some point. Honestly they have only faced 2 good defenses so far this year in NY and Minn they scored 16 points in those games.

  61. Crab15 says:

Hofer – Why don’t you pull a Jack Hammer and start a new S.F. Giants blog? Make a few extra bucks bro. :-)

    • undercenter says:

That would be good. First pitch is very shortly.

    • 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

      Crabs,

Homers can’t create a blog. Hofer is my boy but he’s a homer. He loves Alex Smith unconditionally. You have to be objective to start a blog. Gotta tell it like it is. Can’t play favorites. Hofer thinks I hate Smith. I haven’t missed a start of his since he came into the league. He does not have what it takes. We are not going to the super bowl with this guy. We may not win this division. The hawks have caught up with us. Our special teams are not so special anymore and our defense gets worn down when our offense can’t keep us in games. No QB, no super bowl.

      • Crab15 says:

23J – “Playing musical chairs” with our QB’s didn’t work today vs a team that matches up so well against us. Do you think Harbaugh will stick with it? I know what you would do but what will Harbaugh do? Be Harbaugh for me.

  62. Hoferfan67 says:

Crab, no I’ll leave the blog to the GC’s of the world…

  63. Big Niner says:

This team lost it’s identity today. They passed instead of running. There D got gashed. Their special teams stunk. WE were dominated at every phase of the game, at HOME!!! G Roman is not the mad scientist everyone made him out to be. I see alot of flaws in his play calling.
Maybe it’s AS that’s the problem. Time for CK7 imho. Let him get his touches now to be ready for the post season.

  64. 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

Smiths passer rating tonite was a brilliant sparkling 43.1. Alex only threw 3 picks. That’s not too bad. He’ll be elite again in a few weeks when we play a bad team. Is Jacksonville on our schedule?

  65. Houston 9er says:

    Grant,

I have a question I really want you to ask Harbaugh. You’ll probably need to wear a helmet and buckle up because Harbaugh will get pissed but the question needs to be asked.

Why in the hell are the 9ers dropping Aldon Smith into pass coverage so often? Even on obvious passing downs Smith is dropping into coverage. I think it was the 3rd quarter today, Aldon Smith was actually lined up over Victor Cruz when he was slot left. I was going crazy when I saw that. The 9ers weren’t getting much of a pass rush and here their best pass rusher was literally lined up to cover the slot receiver. Even against Minnesota, Smith dropped alot. Smith was responsible for covering the TE when Ponder threw that lob pass to left of the end zone for a TD. Why is the best pass rusher on the team trying to cover guys with 4.4 speed? Makes no sense to me.

  66. Msclemons67 says:

I just can’t get into this baseball game. After a 49ers loss all sports seem sucky.

  67. 9er1 says:

Jordan – exactly. Empty numbers against garbage teams like the Bills and Jets. But against a good defense like the Giants, complete ineptitude. Just like last year in the playoffs. A world beater against a bad Saints D, a flopper the week after. No consistency ever. He has reached his ceiling, time to hand it over to someone else. We deserve better.

    • BigBlue4eva says:

10 reasons why Alex Smith is not an ELI-te
1 WHOS GOT IT BETTER THAN US ….ELI

      gave him the damn rock!
4 WHOS GOT IT BETTER THAN US ….Antrell Rolle

7 Vernon Davis is not an ELI-te Tight End
8 Jim Harbaugh is an ELI-te QB (with his mouth)
9 Joe Montana is an ELI-te QB
10 WHOS GOT IT BETTER THAN US …Da GMEN

The English language is a beautiful thing. You should invest in some night courses and learn the language.

      • La-La Land says:

Okay, Big Blue. You won today. Yes, there are only two real cities in America, and NYC is one of them. But Houston9er is right. We still speak the President’s English in this country. I realize the Right Coast doesn’t get as much sun as we do, but that shouldn’t hinder better eloquence. Even if your bagels are better.

  68. Sputnik says:

    @Bigp
My apologies I miss understood you my friend .

  69. Prime Time says:

I will tell it like it was. Out coached, out muscled, out hustled, and pretty much dominated in all three phases. Put it all on Alex haters. He played poorly, no doubt. I would have benched him after the third INT.
But this is exactly what we needed. The Vikes game was a wakeup call, this was an ass handing! Just what the doctar ordered. With a huge game on Thursday, we will get to see how this team will respond. More importantly how does Alex respond? I say lights out.

This switching back and forth with CK is a joke now. It’s doesn’t work anymore. Time to move on. If indeed Kap is taking over, put him in now and stop with the flip flopping. I will say this though. If its Kap time now, we are not making the playoffs. He wasn’t anything great either.

    • ninermd says:

I agree on the switching them in and out. It’s embarrassing and it makes it seem like the coaching staff have no clue on what they’re doing.

    • Neal says:

The switching seem to work in some other games, Roman has good game calling for 2 or 3 games and than he is clueless. Niners sucked eggs from the top down.

  70. MidWestNiner says:

I see the Smith haters are out in full force once again. Sorry to disappoint you guys, but this was an epic fail by the whole team. The offense and defense both stunk up the place, but the playcalling was ten times worse. I’m waiting for the real Niners to stand up. No just one guy, but every stinkin’ one of them from the coaches on down.

  71. 23jordan/Alex is Elite! says:

Kap was the reason Alex kept throwing the ball to Rolle. Smiths ceiling is in his helmet. Tooting his horn after beating the buffalo Bison. Alex Smith will NEVER be consistent. Kap makes Alex throw the ball to the defense. Nobody had a problem with Kao the last 2 weeks. Now we have a blog full of coaches and JH doesn’t know what he’s doing. It’s all Kaps fault. Excuse # 107– Kapernick is affecting Alex Smiths fragile ego, his confidence is gone.

  72. BigBlue4eva says:

heres something we can all be happy about….HOW ABOUT DEM COWBOYS…..tony homo is not an ELI-te QB

  73. BigBlue4eva says:

I have a question for all you niners fans….. why do they not throw the ball to Moss more often ….I was happy they werent targeting Moss …are they really gonna thow it to manningham more than Moss????

  74. Sputnik says:

    @midwestniner
You can camouflage it all you want the game was over the minute Alex started throwing ints , none of those (ints) niners are still in it , agin stop making excuses niners lost to Vikings cause the D did not show up , just like Alex did not this game .

    • ribico says:

Which is exactly why “smithers” have been harping on the good job AS has been doing in the turnover dept these last two seasons. Even after today’s crap game AS has fewer ints this season than someone like Vick has in one game.

    • 23jordan/Alex is who I said he was! says:

      Ribico,

Smith has always been a turnover waiting to happen. Im not the least bit surprised about this game. Alex Smith had to play against a defense today, and it showed. he threw 3 picks in 15 minutes. He is who I said he was!!!

      • ribico says:

Tell me what Niner QB has the record for consecutive attempts without interceptions? The greats? JM? SY?

Alex’s game was bad today, no one is arguing that, you don’t have to embarrass yourself with pure bull$hit.

      • Txtree49er says:

He is not a 49er fan, he is here to get attention.

    • MidWestNiner says:

So you’re telling me Culliver didn’t play good today? Our secondary didn’t do good? Gore didn’t get less than ten carries? Roman didn’t call a good game? Akers didn’t misses some field goal attempts? The special teams unit didn’t continue its season of being downright pitiful?
I don’t deny that Smith was horrible today, but to put this loss on just his shoulders is stupid. The team failed in every aspect. But the bullseye belongs to to Roman. He called a good first quarter, then shot himself in the foot after that.

  75. 23jordan/Alex is who I said he was! says:

Unlike Alex Smith, the San Francisco Giants have the heart to mount a comeback!!
