49ers-Giants live blog: Second quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers Week 6 game against the New York Giants.

1:57 The Giants will start the quarter with a second-and-8 at their 31-yard line.

2:00 NaVorro Bowman plants Bradshaw on his back for a 2-yard loss on second down, and Manning bounces a pass to Cruz on third and 10. Ginn Jr. returns the punt 14 yards to the 49ers’ 34 yard line.

2:03 Alex Smith just threw an interception to Prince Amukamara. Smith was trying to throw a deep sideline pass to Delanie Walker, but Amukumara had great coverage. Smith took the shot because the Giants had eight defenders in the box. It looked like Mario Manningham was open down the middle of the field. Giants ball at their 33 yard line.

2:07 Domenik Hixon just beat Chris Culliver down the right sideline for a 39-yard catch. Culliver was all alone in coverage. He missed the jam at the line of scrimmage and paid for it. First and 10 for the Giants at the 49ers’ 24 yard line.

2:10 Culliver just gave up a 16-yard catch to Hixon on third and 8. Manning rolled to the right and Hixon made a tough catch on the sideline. Very next play, Manning hits Cruz in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. 7-3 Giants. Chris Culliver and Carlos Rogers are not having a good game so far.

2:13 Kyle Williams returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 24 yard line.

2:16 Frank Gore gains three yards on first down, Kaepernick comes in at QB on second down but Jonathan Goodwin false starts. Kaepernick back to the sideline. The Kaepernick plays haven’t been working so well in this game.

2:18 On third and four Jason Pierre-Paul beats Anthony Davis to the inside to sack Alex Smith. Andy Lee punts. Giants’ ball at their 34 yard line.

2:25 Eli Manning is tearing apart the 49ers’ secondary. He picked on Tarell Brown two plays in a row to start the drive – a 16-yard completion to Victor Cruz followed by a 16-yard completion to Hakeem Nicks. The Giants face third and three at the 49ers’ 15 yard line. The 49ers are challenging the previous play. They think Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled. I saw on replay and it looked like he was down.

2:27 The officials confirm their ruling that Bradshaw did not fumble. The 49ers have just one challenge left.

2:28 Kevin Gilbride calls a Bradshaw draw on third and three and Bradshaw loses a yard. Bad play call. The 49ers are not vulnerable to third-down runs.

2:28 Lawrence Tynes makes a 34-yard field goal. The Giants are winning 10-3 with 2:56 left in the second quarter.

2:31 Eli Manning’s passer rating so far: 133.7. Alex Smith’s rating: 45.4.

2:31 Kyle Williams returns the kickoff 26 yards to the SF 23.

2:35 It’s second-and-17 at the two-minute warning. Mike Iupati was flagged for holding on first down.

2:37 Smith completes a 12-yard pass to Manningham on second down and throws deep to him on third down, but Manningham cannot make the diving grab. Smith missed a wide open Michael Crabtree in the middle of the field on that play.

2:40 Manning has completed his first three passes on this drive. First, he threw to Hixon for 9 yards (Culliver in coverage). Next, Manning threw to Nicks deep down the left sideline for 36 yards (Brown in coverage). Third, Manning went back to Hixon, who made a diving catch in front of Culliver for a 14-yard gain. First and ten for the Giants at the SF 30 with 44 seconds left in the first half.

2:45 Manning hits Cruz for 8 yards on third and 10. Tynes is on the field to attempt a 40 yarder with 15 second left in the half.

2:46 Tarell Brown blocks it. Niners ball at their 30 yard line and Kaepernick is in the game.

2:47 First play he completes a 36-yard line-drive to Mario Manningham down the middle. Brilliant throw. Akers is on the field to attempt a 52-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.

2:49 Akers misses the field goal wide left. He hooked the last one. He needed to hook this one. The Giants will get the ball first in the third quarter up 7 points.

Alex Smith’s first half stats: 11 for 18, 91 yards, 1 interception and a 50.9 QB rating.

Manning: 13 for 18, 176 yards, 1 TD, 121.5 QB rating.

Kaepernick: 1 for 1, 36 yards, 118.8 QB rating.

Gore: 8 rushes for 36 yards. He got one carry in the second quarter.

Mario Manningham: 4 catches, 64 yards.
