49ers-Giants live blog: Second quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers Week 6 game against the New York Giants.

1:57 The Giants will start the quarter with a second-and-8 at their 31-yard line.

2:00 NaVorro Bowman plants Bradshaw on his back for a 2-yard loss on second down, and Manning bounces a pass to Cruz on third and 10. Ginn Jr. returns the punt 14 yards to the 49ers’ 34 yard line.

2:03 Alex Smith just threw an interception to Prince Amukamara. Smith was trying to throw a deep sideline pass to Delanie Walker, but Amukumara had great coverage. Smith took the shot because the Giants had eight defenders in the box. It looked like Mario Manningham was open down the middle of the field. Giants ball at their 33 yard line.

2:07 Domenik Hixon just beat Chris Culliver down the right sideline for a 39-yard catch. Culliver was all alone in coverage. He missed the jam at the line of scrimmage and paid for it. First and 10 for the Giants at the 49ers’ 24 yard line.

2:10 Culliver just gave up a 16-yard catch to Hixon on third and 8. Manning rolled to the right and Hixon made a tough catch on the sideline. Very next play, Manning hits Cruz in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. 7-3 Giants. Chris Culliver and Carlos Rogers are not having a good game so far.

2:13 Kyle Williams returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 24 yard line.

2:16 Frank Gore gains three yards on first down, Kaepernick comes in at QB on second down but Jonathan Goodwin false starts. Kaepernick back to the sideline. The Kaepernick plays haven’t been working so well in this game.

2:18 On third and four Jason Pierre-Paul beats Anthony Davis to the inside to sack Alex Smith. Andy Lee punts. Giants’ ball at their 34 yard line.

2:25 Eli Manning is tearing apart the 49ers’ secondary. He picked on Tarell Brown two plays in a row to start the drive – a 16-yard completion to Victor Cruz followed by a 16-yard completion to Hakeem Nicks. The Giants face third and three at the 49ers’ 15 yard line. The 49ers are challenging the previous play. They think Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled. I saw on replay and it looked like he was down.

2:27 The officials confirm their ruling that Bradshaw did not fumble. The 49ers have just one challenge left.

2:28 Kevin Gilbride calls a Bradshaw draw on third and three and Bradshaw loses a yard. Bad play call. The 49ers are not vulnerable to third-down runs.

2:28 Lawrence Tynes makes a 34-yard field goal. The Giants are winning 10-3 with 2:56 left in the second quarter.

2:31 Eli Manning’s passer rating so far: 133.7. Alex Smith’s rating: 45.4.

2:31 Kyle Williams returns the kickoff 26 yards to the SF 23.

2:35 It’s second-and-17 at the two-minute warning. Mike Iupati was flagged for holding on first down.

2:37 Smith completes a 12-yard pass to Manningham on second down and throws deep to him on third down, but Manningham cannot make the diving grab. Smith missed a wide open Michael Crabtree in the middle of the field on that play.

2:40 Manning has completed his first three passes on this drive. First, he threw to Hixon for 9 yards (Culliver in coverage). Next, Manning threw to Nicks deep down the left sideline for 36 yards (Brown in coverage). Third, Manning went back to Hixon, who made a diving catch in front of Culliver for a 14-yard gain. First and ten for the Giants at the SF 30 with 44 seconds left in the first half.

2:45 Manning hits Cruz for 8 yards on third and 10. Tynes is on the field to attempt a 40 yarder with 15 second left in the half.

2:46 Tarell Brown blocks it. Niners ball at their 30 yard line and Kaepernick is in the game.

2:47 First play he completes a 36-yard line-drive to Mario Manningham down the middle. Brilliant throw. Akers is on the field to attempt a 52-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half.

2:49 Akers misses the field goal wide left. He hooked the last one. He needed to hook this one. The Giants will get the ball first in the third quarter up 7 points.

Alex Smith’s first half stats: 11 for 18, 91 yards, 1 interception and a 50.9 QB rating.

Manning: 13 for 18, 176 yards, 1 TD, 121.5 QB rating.

Kaepernick: 1 for 1, 36 yards, 118.8 QB rating.

Gore: 8 rushes for 36 yards. He got one carry in the second quarter.

Ahmad Bradshaw: 11 carries for 23 yards.

Mario Manningham: 4 catches, 64 yards.

Michael Crabtree: 1 catch, 7 yards.

Vernon Davis: 1 catch, 6 yards.

Greg Roman called 10 runs and 19 passes despite the fact that Gore is averaging 4.5 yards per run.

  1. undercenter says:

    Defense looking good.

  2. undercenter says:

First drive with decent field position.

  3. Adam says:

Defense will keep the Giants in check but we have to score. Terrible play. Int.

  4. chris says:

I don’t mind that INT. It was an agressive read, but the ball hung up in the swirling winds of Candlestick.

  5. DS94everXev says:

That is why we don’t throw open DW.

  6. undercenter says:

Well there is that play again against Culliver

  7. FunkTaFyde says:

Seemed like Walker could’ve made a better play on the ball

  8. Johnny Christo says:

Agree with DS for once. DW should go up for that thing.

  9. Stan says:

Man,too much a nice day to boob tube all day..I got plants to plant,I washed the car,and the weather is great.
    But,I am checking in !
From what I’ve seen..Alex is off his last year accuracy..

  10. Classic Niner says:

    Manningham was open.

  11. ribico says:

giants. you aren’t going to establish crap. give it up.

  12. Classic Niner says:

Culliver is getting ABUSED right now !!

  13. DS94everXev says:

Culliver again beat deep. Needs to give more cushion, or hit more in bump n run.

  14. tkamB says:

Ugh Culliver, you took a bad week to not play well.

  15. Adam says:

Momentum changer. Need to quit fooling around with the trick plays and get moving.

  16. FunkTaFyde says:

Defense is balling. Offense needs to stop being cute with the play calls and put some points on the board. Then you can get fancy. Otherwise stuff like this happens. Giants are just too good a team to let hang around.

  17. Coffee's for closers says:

Alex is going to play with less confidence now and we’re gonna see the old Alex Smith for the rest of the game.

    • tkamB says:

      How optimistic!

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

      Coffee,

No Smith won’t because he should have his azz on the bench. He and his dire finger!

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Here’s the ‘ol smitty we came to know and love. Way to show up for the big game. Cant wait to hear how many finger excuses come out of this one.

  18. steve says:

that pass right there should end any debate for alex smith as an mvp candidate. i literally laugh out loud anytime someone tries to justify him being a great qb (ie. mike sando)

    • tkamB says:

Oh yes because its not like the great qbs don’t make bad decisions every once in awhile.

      • tkamB says:

Man that first quarter against the Falcons should end any discussion of Peyton Manning going in the HOF. I mean three picks? Sheesh.

      • steve says:

that was both a horrible decision (manningham wide open), a telegraphed pass, and a horrible pass. can you lob a ball in the nfl? no. no. no.

      • tkamB says:

I’ve seen HOF qbs make worse plays before. Judging a qb’s ability on one single play is the most hilariously inane thing ever.

      • steve says:

it just sums up the type of qb he is. can’t make a read to save his life. its first option and then dump off if its not there or force it, never looking downfield at other options. damn i hate eli, but he’s throwing darts right now that alex only dreams of

      • tkamB says:

Sure if your eyes only work when you can get some confirmation bias.

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Hi Steve. Your mother’s calling…

  19. Adam says:

Sheer stupidity. Trick junk is going nowhere.

  20. Classic Niner says:

    OMG!!

  21. Crab15 says:

    Crappy punt.

  22. angusinCanada says:

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Our defence is terrible, Smith is terrible! We’re not going to win another game all year!

    • tkamB says:

      Haha exactly.

      • Comcast says:

Can’t afford to lose to NYG. HAVE to beat them. Keep in mind, the 49ers have not beaten a team with a winning record all season.

      • tkamB says:

And if we beat the Giants that won’t change because guess what they’ll fall to 3-3! And then you can say we haven’t beaten anyone all year for another couple weeks.

  23. undercenter says:

Cant run they gonna pass, thats the way its gonna go

  24. Crab15 says:

    Where’s the pass rush?

  25. Comcast says:

Alex gives the Giants seven. Then goes three and out. The Alex of last week looks to have been an outlier, as I expected.

  26. Crab15 says:

    I can’t stand Joe Buck!

  27. tkamB says:

    Don’t just waste challenges Harbaugh.

  28. Adam says:

Harbaugh needs a brain transplant. Clearly not a fumble.

  29. Me says:

Who ever is in charge of telling JH when to throw the red flag should go the way of Singletary.

  30. Crab15 says:

I thought Cowboy was going to take his helmet off and get the 15 yarder.

  31. Hank says:

We are not in sync on offense. No wonder as we are trying to be to cute. As a result Giants have woke up.

  32. BigP says:

Time for the offense to get something going here.

  33. DS94everXev says:

We need to get back to the 1st quarter playcalling -CK plays.

  34. Nick says:

Not only has ALex Smith crawled into his shell, but GR and JH are getting conservative after that INT

  35. 23jordan/ Consistency From Smith??? says:

Smith can’t throw deep unless its against BUFFALO!

  36. steelematic says:

If we are gonna throw deep y is moss not on the field. just sayin

  37. undercenter says:

    geez

  38. steve says:

first half qb rating for alex smith: 50.9
eli currently at 134 before this drive…

  39. Crab15 says:

    Same refs from NFC Championship?

  40. Hoferfan67 says:

ADavis is having a terrible game. If he blocks his guy AS hits MM. AD’s man impedes AS’s throw by putting his arm up thus he threw it inside. Terrible day by OL and DB’s.

  41. 23jordan/ Consistency From Smith??? says:

We’ll be okay. Out starting qB is 1st in the league in passer rating. He is elite. Captain discountdoublecheckdown!

  42. MontanaMan16 says:

They’re just catching every sloppy thing thrown out there!

  43. Big Niner says:

We are being punked at home!!

  44. bayareafanatic says:

    Measuring stick game game.

  45. Adam says:

Secondary needs to step up and Fangio needs to step up the blitzes.

  46. ninermd says:

The scary thing about that int from smith is he might be afraid to throw downfield again. I liked the way he came out though

  47. Hoferfan67 says:

The 9ers were doing well until they brought in CK on the gimmicky plays. Will they ever learn those plays don’t work against good team and stick to their core plays??!

  48. ninermd says:

No pash rush. Cb’s and safety’s are on an island

  49. ribico says:

brown better at knocking down kicks than he is at passes ;)

  50. Big Niner says:

    Ck7

  51. 23jordan/ Consistency From Smith??? says:

    That’s a pass!!!!!!!

  52. BigP says:

Not bad for a running QB.

  53. Crab15 says:

    CK7 – Wow, rocket arm.

  54. MontanaMan16 says:

Bad throw, great catch by Manningham!

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Hater!!! The bad throw was the floating duck that got picked off by Smith.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

DW didn’t fight for that throw. I watched it 3 times and DW let the DB pick the ball. He’s terrible this year!

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

The throw wag great though! Alexcuse 106- his finger is hurting so he can’t throw over 10 yards!

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
It was a bad throw, period. Whether Walker fought hard enough or not doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t throw the ball. He was open. I expect Smith to look better in the second half and one pick isn’t the end of the world, but give it a rest already.

      • Scooter_McG says:

That ball really did float though – it gave all the time Amukamara needed to get under it and take it away. A little more velocity and DW is the only one making a play on the ball.

  55. Fourth & Alex says:

Beautiful zip pass. MM *almost* broke out of that for a TD.

  56. ribico says:

    Alright, Kap!

  57. bayareafanatic says:

Hmmmm. Measuring stick game like I said.

    • Big Niner says:

The teams have film on us now. The gimmick plays are unsustainable unless you’re playing pop warner. Our meat and potatoe plays need to work and they haven’t…..

  58. Nick says:

Nice play CK – that’s how you go downfield

  59. Fourth & Alex says:

Wow Akers is losing it. He’s been so money.

  60. Adam says:

    Nice throw.

  61. ribico says:

Not the same Akers as last year :/

  62. Big Niner says:

    What’s going on with Akers?

  63. bayareafanatic says:

At least line QB can complete deep passes.

  64. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Why did they bring in Kap to make that throw?? Because Smith doesn’t have that shot in his bag!!!

  65. Crab15 says:

OK, no more FG attempts. unless it’s 60+

  66. tkamB says:

What is wrong with Akers? Last three weeks hes just been awful. Ruined that good play by Kaep and Manningham.

  67. Me says:

Need a consistant kicker. Should be a one point game, even with the O and D stinking it up.

  68. Neal says:

These missed field goals are going to haunt us this game. We need to see Kaep play more often, the QB of the future might be sooner than the Smithers can drink a glass of Kool- Aid.

  69. DS94everXev says:

Akers since his record tying kick hasn’t been Mr. Reliable. Those 3 points really would help.

  70. DS94everXev says:

Akers since his record tying kick hasn’t been Mr. Reliable. Those 6 points really would help.

  71. Crab15 says:

I want Coughlin in a cage with me for 30 seconds.

  72. BigP says:

Time to refocus and implement some half time adjustments.

  73. Adhesive_Bandage says:

Alex playing like his usual self today. Can’t count on him against anything but a suck team.

    Typical Alex.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

It’s a known fact he’s got a bad finger on his throwing hand. How about the OL, DB, etc? AS doesn’t play D!!

      • Nick says:

You want the D and special teams to win every game? Alex needs to step up. Dude is playing scared and nervous. The plays are there – like the bomb to MM that he missed on.

      • Adhesive_Bandage says:

NO EXCUSES. If he can’t play, he shouldn’t play. If his finger is hindering him, he should be put on IR.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Now you are JH??!

  74. tkamB says:

Good to see the haters are back, I was worried when none of you showed up last week.

  75. Adhesive_Bandage says:

WOO HOO, Alex with a WHOPPING QBR of ***50*** in the first half.

  76. steelematic says:

This is last year coming to bite us.. For everyone that was so happy with kicking field goals last year n kept saying well at least we are winning. well this is the alternative to not putting the ball in the end zone

    • Hoferfan67 says:

9ers won during the season last year and lost in the playoffs. One game doesn’t make a season. In my opinion they’re more interested in winning on Thursday which is a division game.

  77. La-La Land says:

Maybe CK7 can do the kicking, too.

  78. Msclemons67 says:

19 passes, 10 rushes. Roman is doing the same thing he did against the Vikings. Getting pass happy and ignoring the strength of the offense.

  79. Big Niner says:

They get the ball first. I would have deferred instead of taking the ball first. The D is always amped up to start the game. Now we need to get a 3 and out and show what we’re capable of.

  80. steve says:

NFC west is gonna get swept today! so much for that awesome start

  81. Scooter_McG says:

A little dose of reality in that last quarter. Beating up on the Jets and Bills is a little different to taking on the SB champs. Offence was out of rhythm ever since the INT and the defence isn’t matching up well against the Giants passing offence. And looks like Akers has the yips.

  82. I.P. Daily says:

Bunch of whinners. You guys are a bunch of kittens…

  83. bayareafanatic says:

    Smithers this ain’t Buffalo.

  84. tkamB says:

    Ugh special teams.

  85. Crab15 says:

    Akers can’t tackle either today.

  86. bayareafanatic says:

Let’s see what Smith does to help his team. We don’t need a manager now we need a player

  87. Fourth & Alex says:

Let’s see if Alex can bring this team back.

    • ribico says:

And lets see if the defense can slow the Giants too. And the ST not give up any more 70 yard returns, etc….

      • ninermd says:

Ribico… Shut up! Defense can’t win every game. Time for your “consistent” qb to play. Dummy

    • Adhesive_Bandage says:

He cannot. This is not 2011. This game is over. the 49ers have lost. The rest of the game is simply practice for both teams. I hate it, it sucks, but when they kept Alex it was totally predictable. It’s not rational to expect Akers to be perfect every year. It’s not practical to expect the defense to have a +28 turnover ratio. All those things contributed to the 49ers record last season much more than Alex did.

Alex will not bring the team back today. Harbaugh is going to have to think about replacing Alex after the bye.

  88. bill says:

    offensive penalties

  89. Adam says:

Hmm. Could be game over. Sure hope the Giants beat the Cards tonight or work will be miserable tomorrow.

  90. undercenter says:

Its quite obvious that AS should of made that tackle on special teams and should of made the stop at the goal line. Shame on you AS this is all your fault.

  91. tkamB says:

Oh Brady just threw a pick, no space in Canton for that loser.

  92. undercenter says:

starting to hate this krap even tho its somewhat succesful

  93. Mike in Sac says:

I am disgusted by all the niner fans who sold their seats to NYG fans. Just wrong.

  94. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Need I say more?????? He is who I told you Smithers he was!!!!!

  95. bayareafanatic says:

    Alex Smith everyone

  96. Fourth & Alex says:

    Same old Alex..

  97. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Alex Smith???? You Smithers kill me!

  98. steve says:

which alex smith INT was worse? that wasn’t even close. READ THE DEFENSE, ALEX

    • Adhesive_Bandage says:

He’s NEVER been able to do that. What makes you think there’s going to be some sort of magical transformation?

  99. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

    Carlos!!!

  100. Fourth & Alex says:

c’mon Carlos.. that might be a pick 6.

  101. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

    Warm up Kap!!!!!

  102. Adam says:

    Time for CK.

  103. Adhesive_Bandage says:

Welly welly welly, Alice has returned, and the turnovers start to mount.

This one is VERY over. Alice’s QBR is now a scintillating 30.

SCULPT ALICE’S BUST FOR CANTON, the FIRST FEMALE PLAYER IN THE NFL!!!

  104. bayareafanatic says:

    Smithers silent

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, from your famous words, you sir are an a$$!

    • Adhesive_Bandage says:

You were expecting? Get Smith against a decent team, and he folds like my camping tent.

Just utterly pathetic…the worst bust in NFL history. He should be forced to get a cab home after the game, when they waive him before he gets to the locker room after the game.

    • ribico says:

hey, if the haters want to cheer, i yield the floor.

  105. Mike in Sac says:

This game was put in doubt when they had two graeat time consuming drives and crapped out at the 20 twice. We shoul dhave been up 14-0 early and now they are sucking pond scum. We did it to ourselves.

  106. Fourth & Alex says:

Why isn’t Ginn returning kicks anymore?

  107. ninermd says:

Lmao ribico rolling around with his cape on every post. Lmao!

  108. Mike in Sac says:

why is 81 in the game?

  109. I.P. Daily says:

Smith’s middle finger is bothering him more than he is letting on. He needs to come out for this game.

    • steve says:

yes that middle finger convinced him to throw a lob ball into a coverage for one int and straight into double coverage for the second

  110. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

    Warm up Kap!!!!!!!!!!!

  111. Hoferfan67 says:

    Where’s the NO HUDDLE!!

  112. bayareafanatic says:

    Maybe now

  113. ribico says:

    haters having a career day.

rest of us fans, not so much.

    • ninermd says:

Lol yeah. Bury the truth. Consistency???? That’s what happens when you know nothing and run your fat mouth.

  114. Fourth & Alex says:

Amazing to hear all the Smithers asking us to eat crow after he torched the Buffalo Bills last week. I said back then to be patient and let’s see him do it with consistency. They all laughed. Seems like they are eating that crow this week.

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

He is who I’ve always said he was. I’m not surprised at all. He is who I keep saying he is. Any questions?? A tiger does not change his SPOTS!!

    • ribico says:

If you couldn’t enjoy that performance like the “smithers” did, you need to find another team. if you are enjoying this loss, you REALLY need to find another team.

  115. Msclemons67 says:

Good lord Roman – stop calling pass plays. This isn’t Buffalo.

Run the effing ball. Although I suppose it’s too late for that now.

  116. Adhesive_Bandage says:

Welly welly welly well, Alice’s rating NOW is…35! YEEEE HAWWWWWW!

  117. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

    Alex Smith!!!!!!!!!!!!! My man!!!!?

  118. Fourth & Alex says:

I think we should let CK have a go. Alex’s game management style isn’t going to bring us back from a 20 point deficit. We won’t have any chance with Mr. Play It Safe here on out.

  119. bayareafanatic says:

HarBaugh have time balls and bench him

  120. Adhesive_Bandage says:

I am a fan of the team but I am NOT a fan of Alex Smith, because he’s a loser.

I want good football. You settle for sh!t. So who’s the dick?

  121. Mike in Sac says:

Why post to a fan site and rip your own team? Haters go home.

  122. Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, I’ve never seen someone so excited when the*team* they support is losing! Never saw that from anyone on here including the so-called Smithers! And you get support from MD and Bay among others…smh!

  123. Mike in Sac says:

I don’t settle for anything. False starts, bad exection, missed FG’s, dropped passed. This is a total offensive meltdown. You are a loser.

  124. Hoferfan67 says:

    Come on sense of URGENCY!

  125. undercenter says:

    Nice pass nice catch

  126. bayareafanatic says:

    About fuken time

  127. undercenter says:

ok the kap stuff is getting to be krap

  128. Mike in Sac says:

    Hey tool….CK sucks as well.

  129. Hoferfan67 says:

Get rid of the ball ck

  130. Hoferfan67 says:

The gimmicks have been rally killers since the 1st qtr!!

  131. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

    Checkdown on 3rd and 21??????

  132. Mike in Sac says:

stupid….have to throw into coverage on 4th…..

  133. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Great throw smith!! 7 yards short!!!! Yeah, he’s elite!!

  134. ninermd says:

Throw it 7 yards when you need 15.. Wtf

He is who I said he was MD. Smith is not very good at all. I know you know that. All your confidence in this guy can help him. Alex Smith will never be a quality starter in his life.

All caused by letting CK take the ball after a big play. Have run up and no huiddled right after the Moss bomb.

  136. Adhesive_Bandage says:

Yet another give-up play from Roman and Smith.

More throws to Moss and Manningham. Oh wait, Alex is throwing. Never mind.

I am not happy the Niners are losing. I AM happy to see the Giants expose Alex for the hapless, Keystone-Cop of a QB he is.

With luck, Harbaugh will finally see what he should have seen last January against the Giants. A good defense stifles and neutralizes Alex as any kind of threat. He is an utter failure at his position and this game is the best proof that he is a bust.

  137. bayareafanatic says:

But Alex is number one rated QB. He can’t suck

Where is Ribico, FDM, prime, BS? Did the Smithers leave town? 3 picks from this game manager????? You clowns kill me! Alex deserves a pay raise. 12 million a year!! Sign him now!!

    • Adhesive_Bandage says:

Ribico is here, making a fool of himself. The rest of them seem to be taking a long lunch or something.

Alex is the loser of the century. The BUST of the century. He makes Akili Smith look like a good pick.

    • Txtree49er says:

What team are you for??? Cause it doesn’t seem to be the 49ers

    • ribico says:

Yes, he’s sucking and I’m not enjoying any aspect of this game.

Whereas, you are liking what you see. What a lousy excuse for a Niners “fan”.

    • ribico says:

A fool of myself? The only fools are in the hater circle jerk, exulting over a terrible Niners loss.

    • Msclemons67 says:

I have to agree with Rib here. I’m no Alex fan but I’m sure as hell not cheering at him having a crappy game.

This sucks, period. There is nothing to be happy or gloat about today.

  139. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Way to take another sack smith!

  140. undercenter says:

Either play AS or Kap but this other stuff is nothing more then kap krap. Got to remember this isnt the Bills.

  141. ribico says:

    2 x an idiot.
