49ers-Seahawks live blog: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers’ Week 7 Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks. I’ll update this frequently with observations and analysis from the press box.

7:06 Seahawks’ slot receiver Doug Baldwin has an ankle injury and will not return.

7:09 Wilson hands off to Lynch the first three plays of the drive. Lynch picks up 20 yards and comes off the field winded. Wilson hands off to Turbin next, who gains two yards, and then to Leon Washington who gains two yards as well. The Seahawks punt.

7:10 But DeMarcus Dobbs lined up over the center on the punt. That’s a five-yard penalty and an automatic first down for the Seahawks. Oy vey. Harbaugh wants to challenge the play but he can’t. First and 10 Seattle at their 49.

7:13 Lynch gains 8 yards up the middle on 2nd and 10 (he’s got to be the best running back in  football), and Golden Tate drops a first down pass while running a quick slant in front of Culliver. Seattle punts. 49ers ball at their 14 with 10:49 left in the third quarter. That’s three drops for Seattle’s receivers – two would have been long-gainers.

7:15 49ers’ cut back run defense is terrible. Gap integrity is bad. You would think that they addressed that at halftime.

7:23 Alex Smith just threw a 12-yard TD pass to Delanie Walker. 10-6 Niners. That was a 10-play, 86-yard drive. Gore or Hunter got the ball on 8 of those plays. Alex Smith converted a third and 8 by throwing a short pass to a wide open Michael Crabtree, who ran four yards for the first down. Very good play calling by Greg Roman on that series. 4:29 left in the third quarter.

7:31 As he’s getting hit by a blitzing NaVorro Bowman, Wilson throws a bomb to a triple-covered Braylon Edwards, and Dashon Goldson picks it off at the Niners’ 27 yard line.

7:33 Vernon Davis still has not been targeted for a pass and there is 2:22 left in the third quarter.

7:35 The Seahawks offensive coordinator did not show good patience this last series with his pass play play calling because he is continuing to look for the deep ball and not giving his young QB any underneath outlets where he has a chance to lay off the ball if nobody is open down the field.  That INT should have been thrown out of bounds instead of up for grabs into 2 DBs.

Those decisions are how you lose a close game.

  7. Big Niner says:

what’s wrong with our run defense?

  8. angusinCanada says:

what’s wrong with culliver? He got absolutely punked on that Tate 3rd down drop!!

  9. shoupbj says:

how many plays do we run this time before we punt it?

    • angusinCanada says:

      43. We don’t punt the rest of the game. 2 fumbles, 2 picks, 3 td’s, and 1 field goal. It’s going to be exciting!

  10. undercenter says:

Ok offense long sustained drive for 6 not asking for much.

  11. Msclemons67 says:

Frank Gore, 6 carries at 6 yards per carry

Alexcuses, 15 passes at 3.8 yards per attempt.

Put the training wheels back on.

  12. NinerNation says:

    after Halftime….

15 pass attemps for Alex Smith

only 8 carries for Frank Gore

  13. cUSwin! says:

We are not playing niner football. Let’s go!!! Somebody step up please!

  14. Big Niner says:

let’s go no huddle, 2 minute offense

  15. angusinCanada says:

Mayock loves how Alex checks it down!

  16. angusinCanada says:

Hard count! At least Smith is pretty good at that still…

  17. Black59Razor says:

At least they’re not letting Alice throw the ball.

  18. Hannah says:

What is wrong with this team? Is it the short week? They look so unprepared. So many stupid penalties and overall lack of energy. The Defense is keeping the team in the game, but they are struggling to stop the run and getting worn down. The offense has been really awful these past 2 weeks. What happened to running the ball? They need to give our D a breather since they been on the field a lot in this game.

    • Black59Razor says:

They didn’t look any better against the Giants or the Vikings either. They’re great against weak teams, but against anyhting better than a suck team, the 49ers are either in for a tough game, or they’ll get blown out. They will NOT win against a good team. It’s important to remember they have not beaten a team with a winning record all year.

  19. Big Niner says:

    wham block!!

  20. 49er42 says:

    10 yard chunks!
    I’ll take it

  21. Msclemons67 says:

This is looking more like Harbaugh football. Is Roman still on the team?

  22. Crab15 says:

Crabtree first down, good job Alex!

  23. Adam says:

Couple of weird looking raiders fans in the stand there.

  24. michael says:

    nice

  25. Big Niner says:

These official are betting on the game

  26. MontanaMan16 says:

    Alex is our man!!!

  27. Adam says:

    Sucky refs. Clearly a TD.

  28. Crab15 says:

TD!! Yes!! Good drive and smart throws from Alex.

  29. angusinCanada says:

Atta boy! Nice, nice drive. Good play balance, good push, good protection, and good decisions by Smith!!! Open the floodgates!

  30. Big Niner says:

Crabs is frustrated and Gore is talking to him

  31. tkamB says:

Wow Roman made second half adjustments! First time ive seen him really change up a bad game plan.

  32. Hannah says:

Nice, finally a TD! It seems like it’s been ages since we scored one.

  33. Crab15 says:

That was a huge 3rd down play. Wasn’t sure if MC would get the first.
DW finally made a play and Alex delivered a good throw!

  34. Adam says:

Take what the defense gives us. Works every time. Hawks are holding the receivers, go middle.

  35. 49er42 says:

    Smart drive
Run the ball passes to open receivers
Let’s get VD involved and get a turn over on D

  36. undercenter says:

Finally a drive that I have waited for all season. Keep running the ball Niners keep running the ball.

  37. oneniner says:

That wz niner ball. We don’t need long passes. We need ball control.

  38. Hannah says:

The big thing in that drive was Gore touching the ball. Good things happen when Gore touches the ball, whether running or catching.

  39. tkamB says:

Our pass rush is still nonexistent.

  40. Msclemons67 says:

    There it is!!!

  41. Big Niner says:

pressure and a pick!!! I lov e it!!

  42. Hoferfan67 says:

INT!! SEA is starting to crumble!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. Hannah says:

    Yes, a turnover!!!!

  44. NinerNation says:

Told ya that if wilson kept chucking it deep he was gonna get picked!

  45. undercenter says:

Ok offense nothing fancy run the ball and take what they give you passing. Another screen would be nice.

  46. oneniner says:

    Yes. Defense

  47. 49er42 says:

    Yes!
    Now we need 7!

  48. Hoferfan67 says:

Nice pull down and run AS!

  49. Big Niner says:

steve young esque, see the pump fake on the run?

  50. Hoferfan67 says:

Come on OL give FG some lanes…

  51. Hoferfan67 says:

    Nice KW!!

  52. tkamB says:

Need to get Kyle Williams involved more, he has a habit of making plays.

  53. Big Niner says:

    game flow!!

  54. angusinCanada says:

Great, great play from Smith, big pressure in his face.

  55. undercenter says:

Keep running Gore up the gut its working just fine.

  56. steelematic says:

Williams runs with quick feet like nelly from the longest yard movie

  57. Adam says:

Thank Jebus we have all-22 cams now. Hawks have a physical and fast secondary.

  58. steelematic says:

    Smith shuda kept that

  59. Hoferfan67 says:

    Damn need 1st down production

  60. Big Niner says:

    Hurry up offense..

  61. Hoferfan67 says:

    Good blocking…wwwhhhhheeeeewwww!

  62. tkamB says:

Great run by Gore. Lets punch it in, td to KW!

  63. undercenter says:

    ah man wtf

  64. tkamB says:

Roman… not when the offense has a rhythm

  65. Adam says:

    DeKaepertated.

  66. Hoferfan67 says:

DUMN @$$ play! Have CK throw it

  67. Big Niner says:

    helmet to helmet

  68. undercenter says:

    crap

  69. domingo says:

    Alex.

  70. Adam says:

    Stupid. Moss wide open.

  71. NinerNation says:

INT Alex Smith Dammit!!!!! We need More Gore……like Christopher Walken says we need more cowbell man!!!

  72. domingo says:

He is who we know he is.

  73. Giant Fan says:

    INT was obviously Kaep’s fault.

  74. tkamB says:

There was no need to force that.

  75. Big Niner says:

had VD tackled him in the end zone, it would have been a safety…

  76. Crab15 says:

Nooooooooooo! Anything but a pick. :-(

  77. undercenter says:

    No more shuffle!!

  78. Msclemons67 says:

Should have left CK7 in there. What a waste of a great drive by Gore.

  79. Hoferfan67 says:

Again a flow killer…CK does nothing and then the INT. GR and JH need to get their heads out of their @$$es.

    ON THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  80. Houston 9er says:

Alex Smith is God awful. That has to be demoralizing to the entire team. Look for the deep pass from the Seahawks. The 9ers are a 2-3 TD better team than the Seahawks at every position except QB. Alex Smith is going to single handedly lose this game for the 49ers.

  81. Adam says:

Defense woke up. Lynch is a punk. Punch him in the mouth enough, he’ll give up.

  82. Adam says:

    Refs suck!

  83. undercenter says:

More Gore up the gut its been working all nite

  84. domingo says:

    Alex Smith Stinks!

  85. Crab15 says:

    Ginn almost broke two tonight.

  86. domingo says:

Alex Smith is in the middle of his eighth season and this is what we have?

  87. oneniner says:

    Cmon alex. Let it roll

  88. undercenter says:

thats what I have been saying give it too him again and again

    • OREGONINER says:

      Undercenter

Sorry to interrupt, but there’s some serious DUCKSTUFF going on…Ducks 43-6 ….at half. I knew you’d be interested. No excuse, ASU couldn’t call it wrong, it’s THEIR home field…..Go Ducks, go ‘niners, put LaMichael in!

  89. Crab15 says:

Gore is the real “beast mode!”

  90. Msclemons67 says:

Do it again Frank. Maybe this time they’ll let the run game finish it.

  91. Hannah says:

Keep the ball in Gore’s hands. He has been good all night running the ball.

  92. Crab15 says:

    QB draw????? No way Roman!

  93. Msclemons67 says:

I suppose a FG is better than another INT.

  94. undercenter says:

The middle of the Hawks defense is soft, continue to attack it with gore and checkdowns.

  95. rebelscum says:

Like I said earlier, we may win this game and others but I am more and more convinced we will win “battles” with Alex, but will always Lose the “War” Champisonships,l Have tried to be positive but I am just sick of Alex, I am off the bandwagon, Even if we win a super bowl, with him, I will still say time to change, Kapernick or Bust!

    • Hannah says:

Alex has been really terrible these past 2 games. I’m not as down on him as most are because he is performing the way I expect him to. He is a serviceable QB, but not a great one. You can’t ask him to put the team on his back, he is too limited for that. If things continue to spiral down with him, we will probably see Kaep sooner rather than later.

One thing I will say however is that Alex performs better with a good running game, which is why it’s an absolute must that Gore gets his touches and carries. Two noticeable trends so far in all our losses is the lack of Gore touches in both games.

    • domingo says:

      Alex is not the answer.

  96. undercenter says:

    ok defense lets play tough
