Garafolo: “Brandon Jacobs unhappy with 49ers.”

SANTA CLARA — According to Mike Garafolo, USA Today national football writer and former New York Giants’ beat writer, Brandon Jacobs is very frustrated with his role on the 49ers.

Why is Jacobs frustrated? “Because I don’t know anything,” he told Garafolo. “I don’t know what’s what.”

Jacobs reportedly said he’s healthy, he doesn’t know why he didn’t play against the Bills and he would be disappointed if he didn’t get to play against the Giants.

  1. Jack Hammer says:

Did any of the local media have a chance to bring this up with Harbaugh today for his thoughts?

  2. jsand3030 says:

Thought it was weird that they didn’t use Jacobs on that goal line run. Thats why they brought him to the team. That being said, Jacobs needs to be patient. They Manningham quote at the end of the article was great to see.

    • Prime Time says:

Kinda hard to use him if he has not dressed all season.

    • fesnyc says:

early in Jacob’s career (when he had the more upright running style, since discarded), and then late in his career in NY, he was criticized for being poor at short yardage running. some of this of course would have been the line’s problem, but its possible that Harbaugh isn’t playing him because he just isn’t bringing the goods in practice.

    • Ed Luva says:

My guess is that he’s not as familiar with the blocking schemes as Dixon. Not so much an indictment on Jacobs but praise for Dixon: He really stepped up his game in the offseason.

  3. Coffee's for closers says:

Is there any perception in the building that Jacobs didn’t work or try hard enough to come back sooner?

    • f49er says:

      Love that Movie!

Although Alec wasn’t in the movie that long boy did he bring it in that 1 scene.

    • f49er says:

      I’m thinking it’s beyond the Health Issue…

Maybe he doesn’t know all the Formations yet? Thus Jimbo is not completely comfortable with him coming in. Just a thought

  4. cools says:

He’s only been healthy for a week and he’s crying about not playing?

There are a few teams out there in dire need of a RB, trade him.

I think Dix could handle his job anyway, and Dix plays special teams

  5. ribico says:

Jacobs is just frustrated. This is his first experience with extended injury downtime, right?

    • EB Niner says:

Frustrated about his injury is one thing, but if he isn’t singing the same song, it’s time to cut bait! He’s too damned emotional and will stir the pot.
It’s the dumbest thing ever to say, “I won’t say anything”, when in fact, you’re saying something by saying that.

I would love to have him come around and I think we need him for those goal line situations as well, but clearly the coaches feel they have greater needs each week than to activate him.

I am not sure why we don’t drop Ginn and activate Jacobs, but JH and crew know best and unless Jacobs wants to be shipped to Tennesee, he better get w/the program.

  6. Razoreater says:

He’ll be active for this game and score.

    • AngusinCanada says:

Nope. 49ers won’t want to appear to award his whining by starting him. If they would have any impact at all, it would be to keep him inactive this week, I’d think.

  7. Neal says:

He was injured alot as a Giant

  8. Mike says:

Uh oh. Last time a Harbaugh player spoke out like this, Braylon Edwards, he was cut the next week. These words are not the 49ers way…. its selfish at a time when the team is playing extremely well.

    • Houston 9er says:

Yup. This makes me question Jacob’s intelligence. Why in the world would he say that to a reporter? Does he think it will actually get him in a game. Well, I guess it could get him in a game – just not in a 49er uniform.

      • dangle says:

He’s kind of a dumb dumb. Remember some of his tantrums while playing for the giants? I think one time he threw his helmet into the stands or something dumb like that.
It will be interesting if anything more comes from this. All we know for sure is harbaugh does not tolerate players not buying into the team-first approach.

  9. Chicago49er says:

I am a tri athlete and appreciate Jacobs competitive spirit however expressing his frustration with lack of playing time should be a private conversation with the coaching staff! Jacobs should lead by example and just prove to the coaches he is ready and willing to contribute to the team. GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    • Prime Time says:

When you have depth and competitive guys , something like this is bound to come out. I dont think anything he said hurts the team, if anything it hurts himself . But Jacobs has always been a vocal guy. Nothing new and just a media guy getting him to talk when maybe he should not have. It’s not a big deal.

    • Houston 9er says:

Not trying to be a jerk but what does you being a triathlete have to do with Jacobs? What does being a tri-athlete have to do with competitive spirit in a team game? I have also participated in triathlons. I do not know a single person that is competing against someone else in a triathlon – except for the top end of the Iron Mans. Every tri-athlete I know is challenging themselves for their personal best. I think your example is so different it renders it meaningless. I don’t think Jacob’s competitive spirit made him speak out. I think his selfishness caused him to make that bone headed quote to a reporter.

      • EB Niner says:

        Well said and agreed.

I suspect if he’s not apologizing for his remarks, whether behind closed doors or in the public, he’ll be gone by the end of next week. Traded or cut. No time for babies here.

  10. Sean in Canada says:

Jacobs has never been one to keep his frustrations in house. Tough to make roster changes when things are rolling.

    • Prime Time says:

I’m sure someone needs a RB out there. A 4th or 5th round pick might suffice.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Just to clarify, I don’t mean unloading Jacobs. I think of it as not making any game day line up changes due to the fact things are working well. I actually thought he’d play last week to get his legs under him and then really let him loose against the Giants.

I don’t care who does what on game day as long as the end result is a W. I’m sure Jacobs just wants to contribute.

      • BigP says:

Nobody would give up a 4th or 5th round pick for Jacobs.

    • Houston 9er says:

Jacobs and Larry Grant to the Texans for a 2nd round pick.

      • BigP says:

A washed up RB and a backup MLB for a high draft pick? Texans wouldn’t do that and the Niners wouldn’t want to help the depth of a team they might meet in the Super Bowl. My guess is that he gets a few goal line carries this week, picks his knuckles off of the ground and stops crying.

      • DS94everXev says:

        houston

Grant was available for a 6th round pick this past offseason. Nobody even hinted interest. Why would anybody give a 2nd for him (he’s played no significant time this season) and Jacobs who hasn’t even suited?

And you question my football knowledge? Okaayy.

      • dangle says:

I still can’t believe that nobody picked up Grant. He is good… oh well, more depth for us.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Dangle

Neither can I. GM’s are strange. They will trade picks to move up in a draft for a guy they don’t know if he will be any good in the NFL, but they rarely give up a pick for a known good NFL player.

And at the cost of a 6, the guy you’d draft in that position has a greater than not chance of even making the team.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Larry Grant played very well when called upon last year, but there is a reason that he was free for the 49ers to pick him up last off season.

He benefitted greatly from having the best defense in the league around him.

      • claude balls says:

        @ dangle:

The NFLPA would have you believe that the NFL owners/teams agreed not to sign any RFAs this year.
I have no idea whether it was because of collusion on the owners’ part, but it was curious that not a single RFA received an offer in 2012.

      • Chris says:

        Wrong DS.
“And at the cost of a 6, the guy you’d draft in that position has a greater than not chance of even making the team.”

No sixth round pick is going to make 1.26 million a year. Tom Brady’s base salary in the 7th round was 193,000 with 110,000 signing bonus. In his third year, his base salary was 375,000.

Those GMs know one heck of a bit more than an unemployed blogger who spends 20 hours a day spewing nonsense.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“No sixth round pick is going to make 1.26 million a year.” That’s a good reason not to sign him as well.

      • AngusinCanada says:

Not even one single restricted free agent was signed. The high end guys, I can see as the draft pick cost is too high, but it still stunk to high heaven of collusion.

      • rocket says:

I don’t know that it’s collusion. RFA has too many risks with the contract you have to give up and the draft pick compensation on top of that. In a league with a salary cap you have to be smart with the contracts you hand out and I think most teams will take a draft pick making little money over a vet who will play the same type of role and cost a lot more.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Chris

All you do is tail others. And Grant can start for a few teams. For $1.26 million, that is a good bargain. That is about 2x the minimum for a vet. And most minimum guys aren’t near Grants skills.

Care to try again? What business is it of yours anyway how much I post? Get over yourself. Your supposed co-worker hasn’t shown back up. And you 2 always blogged together. Where is Jason anyway?

      • Jack Hammer says:

“And Grant can start for a few teams.”

No he can’t. If teams thought he was starting material they would have made the investment. He looks good here because he has All Pro calibre guys around him.

      • Chris says:

Nice of you to ask about Jason. He is on Matt Maiocco’s blog. Less name calling and more serious talk there. You must be banned from it.
Actually the league salary for a veteran with 4-5 years as Grant has is 700,000. So, 1.26 million is not a deal for a special teamer. That’s why he didn’t sign anywhere. He isn’t a starter and won’t be a starter. Your own numbers say as much. He’s a 7th rounder remember?

  11. Brotha Tuna says:

    Brandon’s crime? Candor.
(Here I go again with my kumbaya-crap, but) Let’s not get all wolf pack on Brandon. He’s our boy. He’s hungry. Its the G-men coming to town. What do we expect he feels? He was probably (too) comfortable with that writer he’s known so long.
I saw Kendal Hunter on camera on ESPN today. It seemed like the other side of the coin. He was asked something like “Just how good can your offense get?” He stammered and mumbled some stock Jock cliche about working hard, but it looked to me like self-censorship; he didn’t want to be too boastful. I think that was coaching too! : >)

    • Nea says:

Funny how the Smithers now want to trade Kaep, Crabs ( earlier this year) and now Jacobs. We don’t need any more draft picks and you can’t have a love fest with every player on the team. Drink the Kool Aid Smithers.

      • Prime Time says:

Neal this is why your a low life poor clown. In business when you have an assest, and that assest is not needed or causes you problems within, you get rid of that assest. In return you get something of value that you either need immediately or in the future. Business 101 clown.
This is why your working as a lawnmower, cause you don’t understand how the real world works.
You can never have enough draft picks and you always get rid of players if they do not understand your team philosophy. Pay attention!

      • DS94everXev says:

C15 was open to trading MC in the off-season for a 1 or 2. Don’t remember if he was ok with a 3rd for him.

      • Neal says:

        Prim Tin Tin,

You just get dumber and dumber every post you do. Living in Mommys basement or the animal shelter must be tough for you. I believe in Harbaugh unlike you dip poop, and I guarantee you he won’t be trading him, he will be playing him, you really lack the basic knowledge in running a football team.

    • rocket says:

I agree with Brotha Tuna. Relax, it was an article done by a NY based reporter and it really didn’t have anything detrimental to the organization in it. Jacobs wants to play. He feels he’s healthy and wants to get out there. He hasn’t been active and he’s frustrated. Show me a player that isn’t frustrated at not playing and I’ll show you a player you probably don’t want on your team. Should he have kept his mouth shut? Probably but at the same time voicing your frustration because you want to contribute is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

He really should be active as soon as they feel he’s able. He looked great in preseason and would probably be the difference in rectifying the short yardage struggles we seem to have.

  12. Rc says:

I could care less, second string 31 year old fullback/halfback is unhappy…. Who cares!

  13. AES says:

Who wouldn’t want to run behind this o-line? Look at what they have done the last two weeks.

B.Jac will get his carries in due time. There weren’t to many opportunities for short yard packages last week. And frankly, Harbaugh may be changing his redzone strategy with the emergence of CK7.

    Let’s see where this goes.

  14. Brotha Tuna says:

I wonder if GRo can find a way to attack the front 4 like they’ve done with the Lions. Running is key.

  15. Big niner says:

B jacobs will get his touches soon. We’re so deep now that we can afford to rest him. I bet you that NY reporter was just stirring the pot. They tend to do that.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Yeah, the specific quotes didn’t quite match the headline. BJ thought he was holding back, but not enough for this day and age.

  16. Woody says:

Its always hard to fully interpret these comments without seeing it said. Jacobs just has to play harder in practice and earn his way onto the 53 man roster. That’s how Harbaugh does it, and you can take it or leave it. I doubt JH is overly worried about what he say’s just because he’s not playing.

    • Txtree49er says:

“Oh, very,” Jacobs said. “Because I don’t know anything. I don’t know what’s what. But I’m hanging in there, I’m working every day, doing what I have to do. Let’s say I’m just working and doing what I have to do and that’s that. I’ve learned over the years when you open your mouth and say certain things, it hurts you, so I’m just going to shut up and keep working.”

      Sounds like he understands…..just frustrated…

  17. drsgrosse says:

Of course he’s unhappy…he wants to play…this is not news, just one of the far-too-many people making a living talking about sports.

What is news — ongoing news — is that the Niners are about the team, the team, the team. Jacobs will be used when it is best for the team.

  18. Jack Hammer says:

    LONDON CALLING!!

  19. 9ersurf says:

Release him and move on ………………. next man up. Go Niners!!

  20. Paul Garrett says:

I didn’t understand why we we brought this guy in, unless Dixon was out the door. The last five years in New York he averaged 12 touches per game … he’s not getting that here. I wonder what his expectations were? Gore and Hunter need to 25-30 carries (between them) … not many opportunities left in the game. Gore did get stuffed at the goaline a few times last Sunday … I hope Jacobs can swallow his pride and be happy with one or two runs at the goaline or 4th and short.

  21. Eddie D says:

Didn’t we pick up Jacobs for the sole purpose of taking hits off of Gore? I suppose Hunter is doing such a good job at #2 (particularly in the 4th quarter), that we don’t really need him right now. 6.1 yds/att … if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

  22. Mood_Indigo says:

It’d be interesting to have a short-yardage package with both Jacobs and Kaep.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Good suggestion. That would give defenses a fit. To seal the edge or clog the middle…

      • Jack Hammer says:

No it wouldn’t. You need a quick back like Hunter or James to properly run the read option.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Not a read option. You put in a jumbo package with BJ in the backfield with Kaep at QB it would give a defense fits in short yardage.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Ok. That would also be a first with CK in the game. I actually liked how hard Dixon ran last week. Hard and downhill.

      • bayareafanatic says:

If Dixon was a short yardage option, we would hot have brought in Jacobs. Without Jacobs we don’t have a true short yardage back…

      • Jack Hammer says:

It will be interesting to see what role Jacobs will play if he eventually plays.

  23. Spaceborn says:

I think this is one of those situations that can arise when a player is injured in preseason or early in the regular season and the team is enjoying success without them. In Jacobs case as an RB, the team, as we all know, has been great running the ball which makes it even harder for coaches to change the current mix of RB’s. Plus, to make it even tougher, the team would have to deactivate another player to make room for him. Celek would seem the likely player, but he is also on ST and Jacobs doesn’t play ST. Same for Dixon. Same for a lot of players that contribute on ST. Just who are you going to shelve or put on the PS to make room?

However, the thing about Jacobs is that he is a proven scorer. Off the top of my head, something like 17 TD’s in the last two seasons? Sure seems like somebody you want on the field. A player that could be putting up TD’s on the goal line instead of settling for FG’s would have a huge impact during close games. My opinion is that the 49ers would benefit more from having him on the field than in street clothes even at the expense of a ST player where that is their main contribution.

  24. ribico says:

Whats Rock Cartwright up to these days? Was he picked up by another team?

    • Spaceborn says:

Cartwright is still listed as a 49er on the web. Doesn’t look like he was picked-up by another team.

    • ribico says:

A team with an underperforming special teams and special teams specialist that was one of our last cuts?

And the same team with a deep roster of RBs and multitude other players that carry the ball and a malcontented 4th string RB?

      Think about it, TB ;)

      • Spaceborn says:

ST play has been a concern, no doubt about it. But as in the case of Jacobs, you still have to consider roster moves that have an effect on the team as a whole. Adding a player means even more manipulation of the roster, usually sending player(s) to the PS where they can be picked-up by another team. A lot would depend on how the 49ers value those players. They sure aren’t going to put any early round picks on the PS, but there are players like Celek and maybe Robinson they may take the gamble with. Not sure of who else has eligibility that’s not already on ST besides Tolzein. It’s either that or releasing a player.

      • Spaceborn says:

I forgot about Ian Williams who would be eligible for PS, but I think the 49ers have plans for him in case Sop doesn’t re-sign. Really don’t think you take a chance on putting him on the PS.

    • Neal says:

Harbaugh does not like Cartwright, heard something about it, he got a couple of bad penalties last year on special teams perhaps, that is one area where we are not that special.

      • Latino Heat says:

you dont bo…diddly that it is…why dont you just shut up and stay off the blogg….you aint nothin but a cheap vato……

      • Neal says:

Why don’t you run your taco truck off a cliff, you add nothing on here.
