Cosell: “The 49ers want to make this a physical game, not a run-around game.”

Greg Cosell spoke with Doug Farrar Friday morning on Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner Week 8 preview podcast. Here’s how Cosell said the 49ers will run against the Cardinals’ defensive front Monday night.

FARRAR: San Francisco’s offensive line is much, much, much better. They were rocking (Seahawks DT) Brandon Mebane and putting him on his (rear) over and over.

COSELL: Yes. That was a great offensive line performance.

FARRAR: What the 49ers are doing is not unsophisticated. It’s very much power – take the main guy (on the defensive line), take your center (Jonathan Goodwin) and (Mike) Iupati, and just beat the crap out of him. How does that matchup with the Cardinals defensive front?

COSELL: In a base 3-4, it’s a little different block concepts. What you’d like to do against a base 3-4 is structure runs where you can get offensive linemen to the inside linebackers quickly. What you don’t want to have is the inside linebackers to attack downhill and eat up the gaps. So you can trap, you can do wham concepts where you post the nose guard and then have a wham on him so the center can quickly go up to the second level. There are different run concepts you can use to get offensive linemen up to the second-level inside linebackers quickly, and I think you’ll see those kinds of concepts because (Cardinals inside linebacker) Daryl Washington can freaking run now. You don’t want him running free. You want him engaging bigger people as quickly as possible.

FARRAR: I’ve seen him everywhere. I’ve seen him at the line. I’ve seen him deeper than their safeties. Wow.

COSELL: Yes. The 49ers want to make this a physical game, not a run-around game.

I agree that the 49ers should focus on the phsyical running game. Its being hyped that the cardinals allow a ton of sacks, but the 49ers are something like 4th or 5th in terms of most sacks allowed. So there is not as huge of an advantage as you might think at first.

This breaks down why anyone thinking Smith will or should throw for a lot of yards this week should think again. This will be another gut it out with the run and play defense type of game, and it should be with how good the Card defense has been, especially at home.

  3. f49er says:

I don’t think anybody doubts how the 49ers are going to attack the Cards D,

Run the Rock early & often and by mid 3rd qtr they’re going to be done. 49ers D needs to get their Sack On too.

  4. 9ersurf says:

Never fear …………..”check-down” Alex is here …………………
    Go niners!

  5. Mr. Automatic says:

Let’s just hope Jim and G-Ro don’t decide to get cute this week and come out throwing again thinking to catch AZ off guard. Ugh. Pound it. Pound it! POUND IT!

    • 23Jordan/ We Need a QB! says:

      Automatic,

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. JH does often try to surprise the opposition. I think he realizes that Alex throwing in Arizona would be a pleasant surprise for Arizona. The cards would love to see smith throw it 25 times. That’s 2 picks and 5 sacks waiting to happen.

  6. Chewie says:

On defense the Cards rank 20th in the league in giving up rushing yards and 7th in passing yards. It makes sense for the Niners to rush the ball early and often, and then allow Smith to try to pass if they get the lead. On offense the Cards are near the bottom of the league in every category, so there’s little chance of them catching up if they fall behind. I just hope the Cards don’t score first and force Smith into thinking that he has got to pass the ball to win. That’s a recipe for disaster.

    • Axel Foley says:

Chewie, why pass when you have the lead? Dont you try and limit possession by running the ball with the lead, use clock and keep the ball away from the opposition?

      • Chewie says:

Once the run game gets going then Smith can start doing play action. Pass to keep the lead. If you keep pounding Gore late in the game he’s gonna break down.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Chewie,

We have to make sire we get the lead. We have to make sure that we are never force to have to have Smith throw the football. I think hes demonstrated this year that he can’t throw the football very successfully when this team gets behind. That’s far too much pressure for Smith. Pressure that creates far too much discomfort for this Niner diehard!

  7. 49ers took my slurpy and drank it all gone says:

Look for another grinding performance like last week this week, as a matter of fact I think each of our division oponnents are going to be hard fought gut wrenching games.

  8. 49ers took my slurpy and drank it all gone says:

I think Alex Lightning snake smith has shown some ability to play into a balanced game plan but if you take away his play action he turns into a lame duck Louie

  9. 23Jordan/ We Need a QB! says:

    Funny,

We run the football to keep the ball away the other team and our own QB. Not good.

  10. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

I say we go wishbone like the old Nebraska teams so Alex Smith won’t be exposed as the fraud I know he is.

  11. Uh Jason, a FortyNiner Fan says:

Jeebus Jordan, you really are an arse. Im no Smith lover, but really, dont you have anything else to say?

    • Axel Foley says:

No he really does not. I have been on here for 2 weeks and all this guy does is talk about Alex Smith. I heard he welches on bets, and he calls people different names and insulting names altogether. Must be having a bad year, I dont get it. I thought this was a Forty Niners forum, not Alex Smith Annonymous led by 23 so many names/name caller.
