Coughlin on 49ers: “They run it and they run it and they run it.”

SANTA CLARA – New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke to Bay Area reporters Wednesday morning on a conference call. Here’s what he said about the 49ers.

Q: Earlier today you told the New York writers nobody’s giving you a chance to beat the 49ers. Do you really believe that?

COUGHLIN: That was my first impression earlier in the week. I probably should not have said it but I did.

Q: What do you think of this matchup and how the 49ers are playing right now?

COUGHLIN: I think they’re obviously playing very well. Look at the last two weeks – my goodness. It’s a lot of points on the board and they’ve given up nothing. They’re very strong and they’re playing very well. They’ve been able to capitalize on all phases.

Q: It used to be that defenses could key in on Frank Gore to stop the 49ers’ offense. Is that true anymore?

COUGHLIN: He’s a big part of it, there’s no doubt. Whatever you mean by “key in on it.” Obviously there are other things we look at to get us to the ball. He’s an outstanding player and he’s having a very, very good year. He has an excellent offensive line and they’re doing the things that they want to do. They run it and they run it and they run it.

Q: How about their passing game. Does it similar to the one you faced in the NFC Championship game?

COUGHLIN: There are always nuances created by study and we all do our research in the offseason. You see what has occurred out there because for example Mario Manningham joining the 49ers. He’s an outstanding receiver, very fast, very good along the sideline. So you see what has transpired with his addition for example. So it’s not exactly the same, no.

Tom is selling his team the mentality that because the 49ers are 6 point favorites, the world believes they have no chance of winning. Whether or not his team is buying it, I’m sold on the idea that the Giants are about to walk into a buzzsaw and the 49ers are going to shred them to pieces.

They love the underdog role. This is not the same 49ers, the O-Line is mean and nasty(I like to call them the Bay City Maulers), we have a stable of very good wide receivers and running backs. Our defense is going to smother their running game and we will put it in Eli’s hands. Our secondary is much improved from last year and I REALLY like the way Culliver is playing. We are going to have to stop the run and run, run, run, and run some more to set up play action but if we have to we can drop back and pass. I dont fear that anymore Alex has proven me wrong and has earned the trust that his coach gave to him even without a signed contract. The only thing that seems off is the special teams. We are giving up way to many return yards and that needs to be shored up. I would hate to have the game come down to a blocked punt, FG or a return of some kind. Go Niners rip the heart out of the Giants!!!!

      Sorry Tom,

But you can only use that Card so many times then you become “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”

The 49ers are not buying this crap & they’re the ones who’ll have the ONLY Direct Impact on the game.

      Memo to Tom…..

Go play your little violin elsewhere!

Giants O-Line expect to protect Manning this time.

“Manning was hit at least 18 times during the game (NFCCG), an incredibly high number that included six San Francisco sacks. The 49ers officially recorded 12 quarterback hits — a notoriously subjective statistic that does not include sacks — with several of them coming from Manning’s blindside and leaving him folded like a soft pretzel beneath a slew of red jerseys. In truth, Manning was probably hit more than 20 times.

Snee said it was “awful” to relive, and recalled how even on the flight home from California in January, there was a feeling of disgust among the linemen despite the celebrations over having reached the Super Bowl. ”

I predict a similar feeling of disgust on the ride home. Add to that the pain of losing.

Good post Rib, I remember saying “How’s he gonna get up this time” more than once. Eli actually earned a level of respect from me that day, he a tough SOB, alot of QB’s would have wilted under the pounding he took.

I look forward to watching the DL pound him again, I say McDonald gets a sack or 2 this game. He is so solid, I keep waiting for a ‘breakout’ stat wise.

I sure hope we play more bump and run with Cruz, pop him good and those 5-7 yard patterns are a lot tougher to complete when NB and PW are waiting to blow you up.
